Starting point is 00:03:18 Welcome back. Urban Myers getting into the college football hall of fame tonight in Las Vegas. Reportedly legal to gamble there. It's not a gamble when we bring Joel Clat on. He is fired up. I got to tell you, I wouldn't put Tulane or James Madison in, but I'm, you know, I'm an elitist. Other than that, other than that, I kind of liked it. You know, Alabama, people can argue. I normally try to defend the little guy, you know, with you, and I try to not be the elitist, but I got to tell you,
Starting point is 00:03:55 I think I'm an elitist as well. Because I don't, there's no reason for Tulane and James, you to be in this thing. Here's the truth. All right, Colin. The truth is that the group of five or six, whatever you want to call it now, you know, as conferences have changed around.
Starting point is 00:04:12 The only reason that they're included or have access to this playoff is to avoid litigation. It's to avoid an antitrust lawsuit. That's the only reason that they've got access to this is because of the over litigious nature of what's going on in college football through the last two decades.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And it's not good for anybody. Listen, I think that they should. I think it would be better for that level of school, the mid-majors, to go play their own national championship. I think that would be amazing, like the FCS does, and allow these teams to go out there and crown a national champion. So I'm with you on that. I just don't think it doesn't serve anybody's purpose.
Starting point is 00:04:48 I don't think it makes college football better. I don't think it makes the playoff better. And candidly, it doesn't help those programs to go out there and potentially get beat badly. What do you make of a Notre Dame, a little petty, little one? I argued earlier, they don't want to commit fully to a conference. They won't put a ring on it, but they want the benefits of marriage. And it's like, no, Miami is a 21-year member of the ACC. Miami beat you head to head.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Miami had the full support of the ACC. The ACC has proposed in Notre Dame several times, and they won't say yes. So don't be shocked if you don't get their full support. You're not a full member. You have any different take? No, I don't. I'd like that analogy. Here's what I would say is that I think that,
Starting point is 00:05:31 Notre Dame is very emotional right now, and they are responding out of emotion. And they're allowing the kids in the room to kind of govern the boat. And I don't love that. I think that leadership should take over. I think Marcus Freeman is better than this. I think Notre Dame is better than this. I think that they look petty, not playing in a bowl game. And listen, I understand that they're upset.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I totally understand that. Because here's the thing. Both of these things can be true. I can tell you, Colin, and believe that the committee got. it right by putting Miami over Notre Dame because they played in Miami won. I can also say that I think that this structure of playoff isn't the most perfect thing I've ever seen and that Notre Dame is probably better than half the teams in the field. That's also true. And what Notre Dame is upset at is actually the weekly rankings. They're upset that they feel like the rug was pulled out
Starting point is 00:06:23 from under them because if we actually just would have seen this ranking at the end of the year without seeing any other ranking week to week, we would have thought to ourselves like, yeah, that kind of makes sense. We understand that head-to-head has to be a thing. So they're upset at the ESPN show. They're upset at the weekly rankings. They're upset at the committee.
Starting point is 00:06:43 And yet, the fault in all of this, it's not the committee's fault. Call them the fault is the ACC. The ACC and their horrid tie-breaking system is what allowed a five-loss Duke team to go play for the ACC. championship and not a two-lossed Miami team, which was ranked, what, 11th in the country at the time. So it's a tie-breaking situation with the conference that you're supposedly in bed with, even though
Starting point is 00:07:09 not married, you know, listen, like you said, but that's the problem with this whole thing, because if Miami would have correctly been in the ACC championship game and won that game, then Notre Dame would have been in the playoff. Yeah. So the whole issue here is actually the way that the ACC breaks their ties within their standings and the fact that I believe that there should be a single set of tie-breaking criteria that every conference uses that is standardized across college football. I was a little surprised that Indiana's defensive front bullied the Buckeyes.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I thought it would be a good battle, but they kind of bullied them. Ohio State couldn't run the ball. I mean, Kurt Signetti has just done an unbelievable job. Mendoza, obviously, he's going to go number one in the draft. that he just separated himself between the Penn State game and the Buckeye game. As you were doing the broadcast, did you feel, this is not a knock on Indiana, did you feel because they just beat Michigan, their national champs, they're looking to the playoff, did you feel you got the full playbook from Ohio State, or did you think they were a tad cautious going into the game?
Starting point is 00:08:19 I don't think cautious is the right word. And in fact, I'll just give you, not even my words, but Kurt Signetti. these words. During the week when we were prepping for the game and talking with the coaching staffs of each team, Kurt Signetti told us, you know, he said, listen, I really believe these three things are going to play out
Starting point is 00:08:38 on Saturday. And he said, number one, we are the more fresh team because we had a late by, meanwhile, Ohio State's been on the run of playing six straight games. So he says, we're a more fresh team than Ohio State. Number two is that we are not as distracted as Ohio
Starting point is 00:08:54 state. They've got an assistant that's going to a head coach and Brian Hartline was going to South Florida. They had these recruiting battles on Wednesday with the National Signing Day and he felt like his group would be more focused than Ohio State. And then lastly, he said, and we're hungrier than Ohio State. And I said, oh, interesting, in what way? And he said, because everyone's going to tell them this week how great they are for finally beating Michigan. Yeah. And our team, all they're thinking about is last year when we lost to Ohio State in the shoe. And that sticks with us a little bit. And he said those things and Colin, those things played out on Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:09:29 He was right. To his credit, he was right. And, you know, I'm certain that both of those teams are going to have a lot of success in the playoff. I really, because I think we saw the two best teams in the sport. Yeah, I do too. I don't know if Georgia, I'll be honest, I don't know if Georgia can move the ball much on Ohio State or Indiana. I'm not sure they can. I don't know if they can.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I think the biggest revelation for the country on Saturday night was actually, like, oh, wait, Indiana's defense is also elite. And like you said, they did not get blocked up front. Think about this. Dante Moore and Julian Sane have been virtually untouched this college football season, the two quarterbacks at Oregon and Ohio State. And yet, between those two, they were sacked 11 times by Indiana this year. And if you go, like, they've been sacked like 20 times total on the year.
Starting point is 00:10:23 11 of them were Indiana. That speaks to what you were talking about, about being bullied up front by that defensive front seven. That defensive line is slippery. They're active. They're very good. And the secondary plays zone defense, and they disguise their coverage really well. So what Brian Haynes will talk about, the defensive coordinator, is he just needs that quarterback to pump the ball one time. You pass the ball one time, and we're going to get home.
Starting point is 00:10:48 And that's generally what happens. I like the NIL. I stated earlier there's a lot of reasons. One, I think it gives athletes they get paid, as they should. Football sport drives the revenue, right? Secondly, it gives them a little taste of money. It used to be, you're broke, trying to find a $20 bill to buy pizza too rich. Now it's like, you got a little scratch, you got a bank account, to rich.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I think it's easier for the athlete. I like that. It's almost like a financial class for a year or two before you go to the pros and get a big fat contract. So it educates all the athletes. I also like the fact that you told me it was not you, but people says going to ruin college football. The rich will get richer. I don't know. Indiana.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Exactly opposite. Exactly opposite. A lot of the brain schools. Indiana's got a great business school. Yeah. Vandy. Brain schools. It's almost like really smart alumni bases have done really well in there.
Starting point is 00:11:46 Now they can donate for anything. my help. That's right. I mean, again, Tulane's a brain school. Well, Tulane, what do you know? You can buy some good players. Here's the other thing. I don't think Archmanning, Ty Simpson, or Dante Moore are ready for the pros. I don't think so either. I would agree with you on that. I think they all need another year. And in particular, when you look at guys that have success in the National Football League, they all play for a long time in college. Yeah. What did you make of Fernando Mendoza, do you have a comp? Because I think he is, number one pick, start day one,
Starting point is 00:12:22 big, smart, grateful, humble, strong. I mean, he checks every box. When you watched him in that, you're up close. You're on the sideline. You're in the booth. What's his comp? Because, boy, he looks like I can't miss. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Comps are always so difficult for me because inevitably, I think that they can feel like a knock or they can feel way too high and you're putting too much expectation on a player. I'm going to give you several though. There's different parts of his game and personality that remind me of different players. So his personality, right? He's a football nerd. He's very smart.
Starting point is 00:12:59 He's very team-oriented, loves the game. In that respect, he reminds me a lot when I talk with him, just personality-wise of Kurt Cousins. That's what kind of the vibe I get from him. On the field, he's got two different styles of play. he is he's like a he's like a jared goff that can move more in line with herbert but not quite as physically gifted as herbert as as a runner but he can run so it's somewhere along those lines you know and he's got a very quick release he's accurate he can throw it down the field uh i think he's absolutely
Starting point is 00:13:35 going to be the number one quarterback taken in next year's draft and candidly those other players that you talked about i think arch absolutely has to stand in college college. And I would I would recommend the Ty Simpson and Dante Moore to stay in college. And by the way, you just touched on NIL. Well, those guys might be first rounders mid to late. And I understand that that's a big number that you can potentially make as a first rounder in the national football league. But they can make multiple millions of dollars staying at Oregon and Alabama to play quarterback. They can, listen, the market for a player like that in college athletics, this, I know this is but it's around three and a half million dollars. So it's not like they have to go. Remember, it's not like it used to be where it's like, well, listen,
Starting point is 00:14:20 I'm a first round player. I have to go because this is generational money. They're already getting generational money right now. And so, you know, if I'm advocating for one way or another on these players, I think Dante Moore should absolutely stay in school. And I would suggest the same to Ty Simpson at Alabama.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Ohio State still might pick to win it all. Where are you on it? Yeah, I think I would agree, and the reason would be like it's going to be very difficult to beat them a second time. And I think that you're going to have to go through Ohio State. That defense is good. And what we learned last year about Ryan Day and this Buckeyes team is that they will properly evaluate the weaknesses that show up or pop up during the course of the year like it did last year in the Oregon game or in the Michigan game late in the season. And they will fix those things for a
Starting point is 00:15:07 playoff run, which they were able to do into the tune of a national championship. Well, very, very specifically a problem occurred with Ohio State. Short-yardage run game and Red Zone. And I believe that they'll address that and now they're going to be better because of it moving into the playoffs. So I think my favorite is going to be Ohio State, but I won't
Starting point is 00:15:26 be surprised at all if we see those two teams again in a national championship. Miami is good enough on the defensive line and at quarterback to beat Texas A&M. Do you think that I think Miami, you got to be good at quarterback in the playoff because you're facing NFL guys and you got to be able to match up physically up front and the the hurricane's D line is legit bane's a great edge rusher i like miami to upset a and m
Starting point is 00:15:53 where are you i get a bit nervous about the a and m pass rush getting to beck and and back you know giving a couple of turnovers away in that game which he's prone to do and and here's the other part is, yeah, they beat Pitt on the road, but typically Mario has really struggled now in the month of November, you know, but in big games late in the season on the road. And this environment is going to be as tough of an environment as there is in college football and Kyle Field. They will be going. And so because of those factors, I would lean A&M, but not wrong. Like Miami has a team capable of going in there and winning. I just think it's going to be really difficult to do so. Well, enjoy
Starting point is 00:16:39 the night. Urban Myers getting elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. It's good to see you, buddy. You as well. Have a great day, dude. All right. Yeah, I think I'd take it the Buckeyes to win it. It's going to be interesting. What if Indiana wins the Natty? Just what? Nobody's talking about Texas Tech. They are the total dark cars. What if they sneak in? But if Indiana
Starting point is 00:16:59 won the Natty, think about this. And there's no question. Coach, A++, quarterback, A++, defensive front elite NFL guys three straight years Michigan Ohio State Indy I predicted this I said now it's about how rich the NIL is about how rich are your graduates vandis graduates on average make more money than any other SEC school Michigan Notre Dame top 10 endowments you USC private school in LA, a lot of money. Phil Knight, Oregon, biggest booster in college sports. So I said this, you know, Alabama's not a rich school. LSU will spend a large percentage of its money, so will Ole Miss. But, you know, Auburn's not a rich school.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Bama's not a rich school. Georgia's got some money. Florida does too. But college football now, it's 35, 40 percent NFL. and, you know, who's your, in the NFL, who's your owner? If you got Stan Cronky or if you got, you know, Robert Kraft, Jeffrey Lurie, you're in, you're in a good space. Well, it's like now with the NIL, who are your top five boosters? So, Michigan, a lot of money. Now, do they have the right coach?
Starting point is 00:18:29 I don't know. USC, Oregon, a lot of money. Ohio State, a lot of money. If it was not for Texas and Texas and the massive Texas economy, it is globally massive. SEC would be falling off a cliff. Take out the longhorns and the Aggies right now. You start looking at SEC money, they'd be in trouble. Big Ten would be fine without Oregon or USC.
Starting point is 00:18:53 But it's college football. Vandy's going out signing five-star quarterbacks. The average Vandy grad, New York Times at a study in 2017. The household income is over 200,000. That's like the average. That's not the high end. We have some big news. What's the news, dude? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas, we invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:19:57 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of the podcast. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:20:11 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey Jonas. and then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
Starting point is 00:20:37 But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and
Starting point is 00:21:12 friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis, and I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs' tennis podcast, I'm breaking down
Starting point is 00:21:28 everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Genshin won. I mean, she went down to three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect.
Starting point is 00:22:40 We were God's chosen, kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies
Starting point is 00:23:02 I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant, this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told LeVan,
Starting point is 00:23:24 you're ruining my. my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. J-Mac with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Colin, let's go to your bears.
Starting point is 00:23:45 And the Roma dunzee injury last week should have opened the door for DJ Moore to kind of go nuts against the Packers, but he had one cat for negative four yards. I haven't started him in fantasy for two weeks. Because, you know, it seems like something's a miss with DJ Moore and Caleb Williams. Well, Ben Johnson admitted that wasn't the type of performance he was expecting. He ran some pretty good routes over the course of the day, and we just couldn't give him the ball, which that was not the intent. You know, I thought going into the game, we might have had more for him than any other player in the offense.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And so I was a little surprised at the end when I saw the stats sheet for one catch like he had. I will say this. So Caleb Williams is in year two. Right. It seems to me watching the Bears, and I don't blame Caleb, that his favorite targets are Colston Loveland and Loma Dunzee when he's healthy. That is not a knock, but DJ Moore is a veteran. Caleb's not. DJ Moore can be a bit moody, body language.
Starting point is 00:24:46 He can eye roll it. I mean, DJ Moore comes in. His body language is Noah's great. he's the veteran. Caleb Williams wants to own that locker room. Before Caleb got there, the DJ Moore, DJ was the star. Okay, the star of the locker room is now
Starting point is 00:25:02 Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. What about Kyle Munungai? Well, he's been great. He's good, by the way. But I mean, look at who is producing. Commonung guy, young guy, Colston Loveland, Roma Dunzee, Caleb Williams. By the way, the right tackles young.
Starting point is 00:25:16 So DJ Moore, to me, feels like, if I had to guess, This is DJ Moore's last year in Chicago. They move him to a wide receiver. I watch his body language, and I don't blame Caleb. Caleb's like, hey, I got, you got to pick roommates. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Roma Dunzee, he's my guy, and Colston Loveland's my guy. Cole Comette, more of a veteran, doesn't feel like. And I don't, I mean, quarterbacks have their favorite targets. I mean, you knew with Brady, Gronk Edelman on third down, were the primary targets. So I just, my feeling that when I watch DJ Moore is body language, It's frustrated. Caleb can pick up on that. This is his last year, DJ in Chicago. Bears passing offense has struggled last four games now.
Starting point is 00:25:59 What do you make? You see that line? Seven and a half. It was eight and a half. Brown's going to Chicago. So before you render a verdict, it's only Tuesday. Keep in mind, this is a sandwich spot for the Bears. Playing a team from the different conference.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Packers last week, Packers next week, at home. Very easy to look and be like, oh, should do her? We got this. And overlook this game. There is some money coming in on the Browns. There's no question. If you look at the last four games, this one is the irrelevant one. Green Bay is the biggest.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Detroit's the second biggest. I know Tony Pollard went nuts last week against his run defense, but they're late. I expect that. They had a lot of injuries. I think this is closer than the experts think. Now, Chadura has a little bit of a recent history of ugly picks, and the Bears play takeaway a lot. They do. They do.
Starting point is 00:26:45 I haven't bet it yet, but it would be Browns or pass for me. Next up. Colin, we got a little delist. Cowboys action. I don't know if you saw this social media tiff between mouthy George Pickens and Richard Sherman. They're calling it a Twitter beef, if you will. Sherman called Pickens uninterested and disengaged against the Lions. I don't think he was wrong.
Starting point is 00:27:05 And then Pickens called him out in something he ended up taking down that was a little out of pocket that we won't read here. Anyway, Brian Schottenheimer talked about having a conversation with Pickens. And his words, he goes, hey, Shottie, I didn't. playing my best game. And, you know, I think that, um, unfortunately, none of us, you know, played our best game. And so, uh, that's real. But again, I don't worry about George and his love for football and playing this game. And, uh, again, you know, for five or six weeks, he was the talk of, of the sporting world, you know, look at George Pickens. And, you know, again, we didn't coach or play well enough to win that game in Detroit. They beat us, is what it is.
Starting point is 00:27:48 bad time for Pickens to not play his best game. What do you got here? Vikings and J.J. McCarthy. Go to Dallas this week. Yeah, I think Dallas. Oh, you like Dallas here, huh? Off an ugly loss, extra time to prepare. Suddenly everybody's telling Dallas.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Oh, JJ's a real player. Watch the Cowboys roll. By the way, Brian Flores, Dax's a veteran. He's seen every coverage. I like that. Pickens is going to rebound. George Pickens is going to be focused. Getting a little heat.
Starting point is 00:28:22 By the way, he wants to get a contract. Is C.D. Lamb coming back from the concussion? I think late in the season, it's like concussion protocol. Just forget it. We need it back out there. That'll be interesting because lamb did not look good. Howboys, extra time were humiliated defensively. Dallas has had a pretty prickly week of practice.
Starting point is 00:28:39 They got a little, it gave up a lot of points. Giving out your picks on Tuesday. I would say Dallas. Hey, I want that smoke. Okay. Dallas covers. Final story. Let's go to that game again, but from the Vikings point of view. And let's focus on Justin Jefferson.
Starting point is 00:28:54 Listen, some people, I'm not going to name names, really want to make this an issue. Like Justin Jefferson's not happy. He's not getting targets. He doesn't have great numbers with McCarthy. Anyways, Jefferson, who doesn't seem thrilled, which is understandable, talked about just wanting to win football games, Colin. Here we go. Yeah, just win games. I'd rather win and not get the ball than lose and not get the ball. So as long as we win in and this team coming in here with a lot,
Starting point is 00:29:19 a happy smile on their face and, you know, we have that confidence to continue on and continue to next weekend to better ourselves. I like that team first. You think he's excited about facing that Cowboys secondary and he's got one of the best arms in the league at quarterback? I can. Are you insinuating Dallas is not the side? Just be careful with this one, big guy.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Dallas defense, really? I don't live in the careful lane. That's not my life. Or risk taker. I know. You're a knack. I'm like Sam Donald. I'll throw a few pears.
Starting point is 00:29:49 but I'm going downtown. So you're saying Dallas for sure. I would just be careful here. McCarthy looked very good, settling in against Washington. Come on. Jordan Mason pounding the rock? You're not even being serious.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Dead ass, as the kids say. I can say that, right? You just did. Sorry. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Yeah, the, boy, the games this week are really good. You know, it is funny with a college football playoff. I think we ended up. I mean, just Tulane, James Madison, there'd be lawsuits that they weren't allowed in. But all the moves that college football made, disbanding the PAC 10, Pac-12, the NIL, the portal, it's rough, it's different. It's, you know, for traditionalists, it's difficult. College football, go look at the ratings, college football matchups this year.
Starting point is 00:30:41 I mean, it started with Ohio State and Texas. It was just a great season. I mean, there was drama with Lane Kiffin. there was drama with the college football playoff committee. We had a great season. Indiana, Ohio State, that's as good as it gets.
Starting point is 00:30:56 So I think the playoffs interesting. I think all the teams that need to be in R and I think Vandy and Notre Dame had to win one more game. And they didn't. It's that simple. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd
Starting point is 00:31:08 weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? we created our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:31:21 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas,
Starting point is 00:31:59 and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Starting point is 00:32:18 Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:32:42 The French Open is one of the toughest tests. in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jenchian went. I mean, she went down to three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open.
Starting point is 00:33:20 Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman.
Starting point is 00:33:43 Human documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in.
Starting point is 00:34:11 I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters, to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports slice brings you closer to the action, with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:34:48 And for more, follow Timbo Slicelife-Live 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. You use that chat GPT thing, right, once in a while? Yeah, I'm on there right now, actually. Yeah, AI's fun. I like messing around with it. So last night, they did an alternate broadcast. I did not see that. Using Monsters Inc., which was very funny.
Starting point is 00:35:11 So here's how bad the play was. So first of all, Jalen Hertz, only quarterback in league history, two turnovers on one play. The pick, fumble recovery, and then the fumble. Yeah. So five total turnovers. So on the alternate broadcast, you'd think AI could figure it out. Like, AI is just brilliant. It knows everything.
Starting point is 00:35:30 So on the alternate broadcast, it was so unique and rare that they didn't know what to do with the second fumble. They just laid it on the carpet. Sorry to the radio audience. They literally didn't know what to do because it was such a unique and random play, and they had the crowd shots, by the way, as well. Do you think Hertz could figure this out? How much of it is like losing Kellyn Moore?
Starting point is 00:35:55 Like, Kellynne Moore obviously knew what he was doing last year. Well, I think we said this earlier. Nick Sariani is clearly a head coach who was dependent on his coordinator. Jalen is a quarterback who was clearly dependent on many things. And I've said this. Brock Purdy's good
Starting point is 00:36:14 when he's got the O-line healthy, when he's got his full compliments of weapons. Justin Herbert's 9 and 4, and it's a mess. O-Line's the worst in the league. Well, Patrick Mahomes, offensive lines, beat up. He had the worst game of his career. He am in the Super Bowl with no tackles,
Starting point is 00:36:30 gets slaughtered. So there's about six guys on the planet. Joe Burrow, Mahomes. I think Herbert's one of them. Josh Allen. I think Jordan loves one of them. You can get to the playoffs, and the team can be a wreck. They're just that good.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Then there's another circumstantial quarterbacks. CJ Stroud could be either department, I'm not sure. What about Goff? Your guy, Goff. Golf circumstantial. Goff needs a good old line. Stafford? Also?
Starting point is 00:37:04 Stafford can win. Stafford can get you to the playoffs, I think, with McVeigh. without an ideal situation. So we talked about this earlier. Put quarterbacks in two groups. There's the hot air balloons. They're weather dependent. You can't go up in a lightning storm.
Starting point is 00:37:20 There are certain quarterbacks. They're dependent on circumstances being perfect or more right. I know you'll have Hertz and Purdy. They're in that. I could argue Sam Darnold's in that. Sam needs the right weapons. Wait, oh, whoa. Sam Darnold's in the same class as...
Starting point is 00:37:35 No, no, no. You're getting all defensive. Sam's in that hurts. pretty class. He needs a little protection. You speed it up for Darnold. He'll throw more picks. Baker Mayfield can get very reckless. Those guys are, there's about six on the planet that can get you to the playoffs regardless of coach, regardless of coordinator. And there's six in the world. Six in the world. They're the fighter pilots. Just give me the coordinates. Give me the assignment. Give me the
Starting point is 00:38:05 coordinators. So we know the big four, right? And then there's two others. Herbert and was the other one? Well, I think Jordan Love has proven to me. Okay. Yeah, I mean, he's had battle lines and no-run games and all the receivers are hurt, and you look up and you're like, yeah, Jordan Love's still amazing. Okay. Aaron Rogers in his prime was closer to that. Old Aaron Rogers is not. So there's only about, in my lifetime, there's only, you go back to my entire life
Starting point is 00:38:29 back to the 70s, there's always been about sixth quarterbacks that are just better. They just need less. Right. And I'm not saying they win Super Bowls, but they can get to the play. with less. And then there's another six or seven guys. Now you could argue Dax in that first group, say what you want. We're not talking Super Bowls. Dak, Jason Garrett,
Starting point is 00:38:49 Mike McCarthy, great O-Lines, bad O-Lines, great run game, no run game. I'd argue Dax's going to win double-digit games if he's standing up. So I think the revelation this year is that Dack is better than hurts. Dack has Brian Schottnheimer. The O-Line can't pass pro. Right. George
Starting point is 00:39:05 Pickens is there. At one point, C.D. Lamb was out. The defense before the trades was awful and dach's you know got him in the playoff race could you could you counter that hey listen dac is similar to what we were talking to nb a regular season's one thing playoff's a different animal well we've got a sample of jack in the playoffs doing nothing i would not worry about that playoff games are hard for everybody i mean jalen hurts had an amazing playoff run last year by every analytical number 70% completions one turnover like 10 touchdown he was exceptional okay but again go back to it sayquan had the greatest running back year ever the o line was
Starting point is 00:39:38 completely healthy. The defense was number one. They had a great coordinator. Now he's awful. So it's just, I mean, it's just like, well, I'll give you an example. In my industry, Joe Rogan would be popular on podcasting regardless of who his producer is, regardless of what company he was on, Spotify, IHeart, Joe Rogan would be popular. He can be better if he had the best producer and he was on the best audio platform. But he would always be. he's a curious, interesting storyteller, he would always be popular. That's a star in any space. Or you find a great writer.
Starting point is 00:40:17 You find a great writer at the New York Times or the Washington Post. They could find an audience on Substack. They could find an audience at the New York Times. They could find the Yahoo. It's very rare. Most even good performers in media, in law, in anything, they need a support group to elevate the. Stern got numbers regardless of who the PD was.
Starting point is 00:40:41 Right. So when it comes to quarterbacks, it's tough because quarterbacks don't really change teams a lot. Stafford is the one. When he was in Detroit, really good quarterback, number one pick, big arm, but he was never like upper echelon. Now he goes to McVeigh and he gets Devante and Puka becomes, and now he's in that upper crust. Would you agree with that? Yes, certainly. But Detroit wasn't just average.
Starting point is 00:41:03 They were a mess. You know, it's like, Calvin Johnson's a Hall of Famer, but otherwise, yes, coaching. circles and they never consider that. I mean, I think my take on quarterbacks is every year, the NFL draft gives us about one to two franchise quarterbacks. That's it. So over a 10-year period, you get, let's say, 18 new franchise quarterbacks. I mean, like, legitimate can win a playoff game.
Starting point is 00:41:31 Every four to five years, you get a superstar. I think Drake May is that, where it just doesn't matter. Drake, now, Brable's obviously good, but the roster is much better this year than last. They spent $300 million on it. They hit on like three draft picks. But they're just, in my lifetime, you get a star, you get a Dan Fouts, a Montana, a Brady, a Manning, a Locke, a Mahomes, and Alan. About every four to five years you get one of those. I think Mendoza is that.
Starting point is 00:41:59 I think Drake May is that. I think Bo Nix is circumstantial. He wouldn't be this good without Sean Payton. I think Caleb is circumstantial. He wouldn't be this good. We saw it last year without Ben Johnson. He's not that good. I mean, some of the numbers, I mean, they're winning, but some of the number, like,
Starting point is 00:42:15 Caleb is not putting up Brock Purdy numbers from San Francisco, right? And it's only a second year, so we don't expect that. But he's got much more, he's more durable. He's got a much bigger arm. He's a great athlete. Brock's none of those things. Yeah. You got to be available on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:42:28 Once you start having a second, third, fourth injury, that is a skill. That's a Joe Burrow. He's going through that, yeah. Joe is just so good. He's so great that you're like, we're going to tolerate the injuries. And also the Bengals are a... So like Josh Allen Herbert, they're similar to LeBron. Wherever LeBron goes, he's going to win.
Starting point is 00:42:45 He's going to go to the finals. He's going to be awesome. You take Justin Herbert, put him anywhere. They're going to be a solid playoff team battling for, unless you have Brandon Staley's coach. I mean, again, sometimes you can't overcome. Matt Stafford couldn't overcome the Lions. Hey, guys, it's us.
Starting point is 00:43:08 Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast. Well, we didn't invent it.
