This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

It's the Herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening.
Thanks for making us part of your day.
As gracious, as interesting, as friendly a person as sports has, and I'm talking to the entire
spectrum, Charlotte Flares, a 14-time women's world champion, a 7th century.
Seven-time Smackdown Champ.
I try to bring her on every year.
She's got an increasingly busy schedule.
The Queen is here.
You look fantastic.
Thank you.
You make time for us, and I know.
So it's a Hollywood two-night affair.
This is rare.
It's Saturday.
It is Sunday.
Pop-Colder extravaganza.
It is going to be crazy.
The Ms.
Who is really obnoxious, but he's all over the map.
He is hosting it.
So let's start with this.
Yes.
Do you train differently?
Does it feel differently for a WrestleMania?
It does, but I can't overthink it.
Yes, do I tighten up my diet?
Is my gear larger than life?
Maybe extra diamonds, yes.
More thought goes into the match because it's a longer build.
But no, I really, at this stage, just, you know, do what I do.
I consider WWE now, and I consider Jen,
with you irrelevant, I consider it to be Roman Reigns, you, John Sina.
That's how I view it. That's how I view it. It's not gender exclusive. I just consider you a star
of it. And I think there's two or three others. You are, however, in a sport that has historically
been dominated by big men. Is that a chip on your shoulder? How do you view that being in a culture
that has been dominated historically by guys.
Yes and no.
Do I think that we've, you know, had many first and have come so far
and we're all superstars and our title looks the same,
but I still think it's a forever a fight.
I mean, it is a boys club.
Like, who's going to main event WrestleMania?
Are the girls going to main event night one?
Or is another men's match?
Do we have to fight for that spot?
Is the Royal Rumble guaranteed the winner?
Is the winner guaranteed a main event spot?
Right.
I don't know.
What does that look?
like. But I think it's just a matter of always being hungry. And I think the women, you know,
feel like we always have more to prove. Do I know I'm just as good as Roman Reigns? Absolutely.
Same platform, absolutely. But no, maybe I still have that chip on my shoulder. So I'll be in the
first row. Hopefully you'll acknowledge me. Anyway, I'll give you a wink. I'll like, hey, Colin.
So John Sina a couple years ago, I think it was at the Staples. So when John Sina came out,
And, you know, we're public figures.
And he made his way over.
And I've gone to NBA games a few years ago, Chris Paul.
And during the game, you can see like Chris came over.
And I always think to myself, so with the lighting, you're on the stage.
Yes.
You're performing.
There's going to be stars in the crowd.
Do you ever think to yourself, oh, my God, I loved her in that movie.
I'm like, oh, my God, there's bad funny.
Oh my God.
Do you think about that?
I really want to be in a music video.
Oh, my God.
It's going to be a different crowd.
No, I mean, like, actually, this is the first time I've ever been asked that question.
No, because I feel like a star in my own right, and I feel like professional wrestling as a whole doesn't get the respect that it deserves.
So when I'm out there, I'm like, I'm the biggest star in this room and I don't care who you are.
I love that.
Like, that's the message I want to send.
That's the message that I want to send.
especially here in Hollywood.
Like, look what Duane's done.
Look what Sina's done.
Look what Batista's done.
And I haven't seen a female crossover like that.
So it's kind of like, here we are in Hollywood going, like, I'm one of them and I'm
going to go down as one of them.
So it's like actually I have like a little more added pressure on me.
Yeah.
What is the singular gift your father was Rick Flair?
If I said, what is the one thing?
Beyond genetics, you're obviously an athlete.
if I said one thing from your dad that maybe I wouldn't know or people wouldn't know
that's something he gave you.
Oh.
You want to think about it?
Yeah.
My dad really does care.
Like about the business, about his fans, and pro wrestling, I think, is his first love.
And my husband is the love of my life, but this business means so much to me.
Like, it saved my life.
it's changed who I am.
And I think, like, the fans and sports entertainment,
like I feel like I have that same respect and love that he does.
You can see it.
For this.
And, yeah, I just, I hope my name goes down, you know, synonymously with sports entertainment.
Like, when you think of pro wrestling, you think of Charlotte Flair.
Gender doesn't matter.
That's a, I tell people this all the time, is that Michael Jordan, when he started
elevating and dominating basketball would literally create rivals.
He would say, I don't get respect.
It was like, dude, you're the best player and everybody gets it.
But I think that's a very healthy thing.
Kobe had it.
I think the great actors have it.
They create rivals.
So obviously you're a rock star, but there is something in the genetics, the DNA,
there is something in you that I don't think you can teach,
that it is a jet fuel.
you said it saved your life.
Is that the jet full?
You could retire, you've got money.
Well, I don't know.
I don't want to take it for granted.
Like, I was 28 when I started, and it's not because I wanted to be like my dad.
Yeah, it's just I wanted to help my little brother and help him get on the right path.
And here I am.
And it's like, I never want to take a day for granted.
Like when I go out there, whether it's a live event in front of 3,000 or this weekend in front of 80,000,
like I never phone it in.
Like, I ever, like walking through.
guerrilla with my music and my robe is a gift. And it's not, you know, so many people see,
like, I'm forever the bad guy, which, like, right now I'm kind of a good guy, which I'm
really digging, like, ooh, I like these cheers. But it's, like, it was earned. So I take that,
like, very serious. And I've played sports my whole life, and you can't teach competitiveness.
Like, within me, I want to be the best. Whether it's playing a stupid game of,
you know, checkers with your friends or, you know, being in the women's division of
WB, I want to be the best no matter what it is. And that's maybe not necessarily a good
thing because it'll drive you crazy, but that's just something within me that I don't
know why it's always there. So you defeated Ray Ripley like three years ago,
WrestleMania. She's obviously jealous of you who wouldn't be. Do you sense there's an animosity
because you have elevated above her and now you are the target for your
side? Do you sense that? I don't think there's animosity. I think for Ria Ripley,
she wants to make a name for herself and prove that, you know, she can run the women's
division, that she can be the face of the women's division. And I think the only way to prove that and
do that is to go through me. So it's not that there's animosity, but she knows she has to take
me down, you know, to get to that spot. And I'm just not giving it away. You have to take it.
When you are, give me what exercise do you do, mental exercise or physical exercise, you're going to perform in front of 80?
Wussah.
Thousand people.
No big deal.
I used to cover boxing more regularly, and I've said this before, all the sports I've covered, the two-minute walk for Tyson into the ring, I was nervous.
I could watch a Super Bowl NBA final.
I would see Mike come in.
I would get goosebumps.
So obviously you're the performer.
That's double the average boxing crowd.
Where are you mentally?
Jerry Seinfeld says,
No talking 10 minutes.
I'm getting to a space before I act.
Where are you mentally,
physically, five minutes before you walk out?
Doing push-ups, probably.
Like, I have to be loose.
I have to be warm.
Like, if I'm not warm,
then I don't feel like I'm in the zone.
But I'm going to be honest with you.
like I get more nervous doing interviews like this with you than I do in front of 80,000 people
just because like when my wrestling boots are on and I'm not and when I'm in the ring,
I'm like, this is my world.
This is my show.
This is my ring.
This is my place.
This is where I feel like the most confident.
But in terms of like where I am mentally, like when I came back in December, I had a couple of months off.
And I was like, man, I don't know if I can be Charlotte Flair tonight.
Like how do I get that intense?
How do I get that angry?
How do I get, you know, how do I show that confidence,
even though I don't feel like that every day in my real life?
But it's like, boom, my music hit.
And I'm like, okay, I remember how this goes.
I remember this song and dance.
So it's just like, I don't know.
It's just, and also depending on the story, like my story with Ria,
we're both three years better.
She has to go through me to be the star.
She has to go through me, you know, to become the champion.
So for me, it's like, bring it.
Show me what you got, kid.
So my demeanor and how I feel going into this match is much different, you know, than how she feels.
So my preparation mentally is like, make this girl earn every second of that moment with you in that ring.
Like make her earn it.
Don't give it.
Earn it.
You pause when I ask you about your dad.
It is interesting because, and I've said this, it's hard to be the best mom or dad.
and number one in the world at what you do.
It's just hard because there's only so many hours in a day.
And you pause with your father because obviously he was a reigning star,
not just out of personality.
There's nights he's not home.
I mean, I know the sport.
Is there a conflict with you about that?
Like, do you ever think to yourself,
okay, I got to scale back 10% and that goes to my fiance?
Like, where are you on being the best in the,
country for WWE.
Where are you with that emotionally?
Do you struggle with that or do you just come to terms with it?
No.
What I, look, my husband knows if he was to ever say, like he calls me Mommy, he's like,
Mommy, if I ever, you know, wanted you to take time or anything, I know that you would
resent me because I know how much this means to you.
But for me, I think where I'm at emotionally and like mentally is like, I'm walking into
my seventh WrestleMania.
Seven WrestleMania is either the champion or the challenger.
No one's done that.
But like I still feel like I have more to prove.
I still feel like there's more to do.
I don't know what that looks like.
What is the unknown?
Like just because I'm a woman and I've done seven WrestleMania's,
is that's like, oh, well, she's at seven.
We're wrapping up soon.
Like I'm more there like, yes, I want to have a family.
I want to have children.
And, you know, I still believe that I could be, you know,
a WWE superstar and be a mom.
It's just where, like, I have done it all, but I still feel like I'm, you know, just, you know, growing into my boots.
Right.
Because I, you know, didn't want to do this my whole life.
Like, I started late.
How was Vince McMahon such an iconic, powerful figure?
He has, Nick Kahn's a friend of mine.
Nick used to be my agent.
So I remember years ago when Nick Kahn took over WWE.
I just, you know, I was like, hey, what's Vince like?
He says incredibly gracious in terms of.
of like you're very much like this, manners.
Now, you also see at times volcanic because Vince is a huge personality.
Is your kind of, how do you view Vince?
Because I've known four or five people who are around Vince and there are different venses.
How did you view it?
Oh.
I didn't ask you easy ones.
So I was always nervous to go to Vince because Ashley and Charlotte are much different.
So Vince saw Charlotte every Monday, every Friday, live event promo.
Like, he saw Charlotte.
And I built Charlotte to be the woman that I wanted to be like in my personal life where
Ashley's like, well, I don't know and this and that.
And like, like, not as like confidence.
So anytime I had to go talk to Vince, I'm like, all right, put on your Charlotte pants.
Because I don't want Vince to see like be different than the character.
Yes.
I never wanted him to see weakness or self-doubt.
Um, but the one thing I will say when it came to Vince, or still does, because when he left,
I was like, every time I walk out of Gorilla, like, I want to make him proud.
Like, that's, you, you want to make Vince McMahon proud. Um, and the few conversations that we
did have, because I only, like, you know, you pick and choose when you need to go to the big guy.
And that was always my philosophy. So the few times I did go with.
him like he was all he he always said something so nice and it just was like man he he gets me
or he pays attention or i know he like i makes you want to work that much harder does that make
sense sure of course yeah i think i think one of the signs of leadership is your line uh you think
about him when you go into the ring yeah vince makes you think about him and and by the way i've
had a million bosses in my life they all manage different um there is
what you're saying is I've had with a couple of bosses
that I'm always, they're always in my mind.
Yeah, just wherever you go in your career.
They're just kind of there.
Yeah, like the life lessons.
My late mother had some of that.
Like I always thought she didn't like sports.
She was British.
And so I always thought she didn't like sports,
but she liked it when I talked about stuff.
And so I started building my show and I thought,
could I do a show that my mom would find interesting?
And I, to this day, about once, twice a year,
I'll hear a voice on something.
You know, I'll be at home and I'll be in the kitchen.
I'll hear my mom's voice saying something witty.
But I think similarly, people have an impact in your life when you think of them when they're not there.
And you think of Vince when he's not there.
Like now that I've come back as a good guy, and I know Vince loves this good guy.
So I'm like, oh, I wonder if he's so happy that people are cheering like a softer sigh.
When you are a heel in the sport and there have been people, Roman Reigns, that can turn, right?
What is it like being a heel?
easy
really
just
just easy
be obnoxious
well no
I just think on paper
like I'm Charlotte Flair 510
really athletic
held every
title there is to hold
like
it's just
I don't know
I'm Tom Brady
I mean
sustained success
yeah like
consistency
and it's hard to like
it's very hard to want
like
how do you
You can't be the underdog when everything comes so easy to you.
Like wrestling came easy.
No, the character did not.
The speaking did not.
But like naturally wrestling came easy to me.
Do you remember the first time you wrestled preparing?
Yes.
I was terrified.
Where?
How old where?
FCW, Tampa 28 against Emma.
In front of like 12 people.
Maybe 11.
And you were terrified.
Terrified.
Terrified.
I was like, I don't know how I'm going to do this.
Terrified.
Yeah.
mortified.
Do you have a tape of it?
Yeah, I think they do.
I think they played it in my A&E documentary, actually.
And my first promo.
Oh, and I had a pink dress on too in my first promo.
But I was just talking about, you know, what John Sina means to the industry and wanting to be just like him.
And it's crazy where I'm at now, even though, you know, John Sina is the ultimate good guy.
And I tried to do that as a bad guy.
But, yeah, Sina leans in to John.
did you know, and this is sort of a genderless question, when you watch a wrestler, and there's levels to it, you guys now have, I mean, you're like college football recruiting. You're finding these football players. Do you know instantly, even if you saw a tape or it's one of the lower levels and you're like, that's a star. Can you sense it or, or is it a work? Is it a work in progress? Was the rock instantly? John's seen it instantly to you.
A star. Because Roman Rains took a while.
No, I took a while. I just, I remember when Dusty, Cody's dad, Dusty Rhodes, because he was my
promo coach.
When I, when I showed up at FCW, I think he was just terrified for me and nervous because I was
such a shell of myself and, like, scared of my own shadow. But there was one day I did really
well in training and was beating the men and women and the practice rings. And he's like,
okay, you're going to be okay, kid. And then there was one promo I, like, probably
copied and pasted from my dad talking about being the mountain. And mind you, I had no charisma.
But it was just like the confidence that I showed in that promo. And he's like,
you've got it, baby. You've got it. And I'm like, okay. But no, like it definitely,
I was not a star overnight. Like that, I've worked at that very hard. Not that you can work at
maybe I always had it in me. I just never knew I had the confidence in me. Like it was always there.
but definitely took a lot of peeling those layers to bring out the confidence.
Of course.
Yeah.
Tom Hanks did bosom buddies, didn't he?
Am I wrong on that?
Dave, you know that.
You know Tom Hanks' career.
I mean, seriously, if you go back to the great actors, it's amazing some of the stuff they were in.
Although Tom Cruise was great at the very beginning, outside of Tom Cruise.
Charlotte Flair, the Queen, 14-time Women's World champ.
WrestleMania 39.
WrestleMania goes Hollywood.
Two-night events.
SoFi Stadium this Saturday and Sunday, hosted by the Mizz.
It's great seeing you.
Good seeing you. Thanks for having me again.
Congratulations, Charlotte Flair.
Back in a second, The Hurt.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little camp?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah.
Yeah, yeah, literally.
But just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point,
this is the second episode
where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see
there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Welcome back.

J. Mack with the news.
No.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
You know, we thought about just scrapping the news and doing
like fast food takes.
Because everybody's so into your
fast food choice.
I love Chick-fil-A.
Huge fan. I like Jersey mics.
Is that technically fast food?
Yeah, they're doing a great job.
McDonald's fries, obviously, are
I mean, I'll stop sometimes to just get the fries.
Oh, I do that in the summer.
Yeah.
Yeah, I need the salt.
Absolutely.
But I'm with you, in and out.
Don't get the fries.
I don't want to say overrated, but the fries are just like, come on.
They're bad.
It's not, yeah.
All right, let's get started.
Brian Daibel obviously had a phenomenal first season with the Giants.
They got to the playoffs.
They won a playoff game on the road.
He was a coach of the year.
But co-owner John Mara jokingly spoke about how things can turn quickly if the success doesn't continue.
Oh, we kid him.
I mean, right now he's Bono walking around New York City, but I've told him, I said, in this business, it doesn't take long to go from Bono to Bozo.
So don't get your head too big right now, but no, he has been great.
I have a feeling that clip may surface again in, say, November.
The Giants are five and nine.
Now you talked me in.
I had the Giants in last place.
You talked me into moving them up, so I ended up getting that division right, Philly, Dallas, Giants, Washington.
You know, half the playoff teams don't make it the following year.
Our audience knows that.
Where are you on the Giants?
Well, listen, free agency's not done.
The draft.
The schedule matters.
On a schedule is huge.
Whether it's back-to-back road games, traveling, cross-country, whatever.
I got to see that.
I'm not going to make any bold proclamation.
So you and I, I am a big believer schedule.
matters too. I know who you're playing. I don't know what.
Like, if you're playing Andy Reed in September,
it's a loss. If you're playing
Denver in Denver in September,
it's really tough. New England's
always more vulnerable in September than October,
November. It does matter.
Absolutely. But my guess
would be there will be a little pullback.
They exceeded expectations last year.
Well, they got the Vikings twice. That helped.
The worst defense in the league twice.
And those were Daniel Jones two biggest games.
All right. Next up, college football. So, you
were so hot for Will Levis earlier in the show and his bathroom selfie. So Anthony Richardson,
see him here, the Florida quarterback. I had him number one in my mock. You don't think it's
going to happen. Okay. So today, Anthony Richardson had his pro day. On one of the throws,
he hit the ceiling because he's got so much arm strength, and he ended the session with a deep
bomb followed by an acrobatic cartwheel and backflip. And we have footage of it,
Anthony Richardson potential top five quarterback doing, here's the throw.
Now he runs up the field to celebrate.
And look at this gymnastics, Colin.
This kid is a freak.
Well, where's the gymnastics?
Do we have the gymnastics?
Well, anyways, he did a cartwheel and a backflip.
The guy, a quarterback who's 6'4 chiseled can do backflips.
We've never seen anything like that at the position.
Went to last time Mahomes did a backflip during a game.
Oh, here we go.
Okay.
Look at that.
What quarterbacks can do that?
Money Mansell ain't doing that.
Tim Tebow's not doing that.
You're not impressed.
That's like saying I could spin plates.
How would it help the show be better?
I mean, it doesn't, that doesn't, I don't care.
Athletic ability at the quarterback position?
Von Miller chasing you down, you're back flipping out of it.
This guy.
Dude, it's not Batman.
He's not back flipping away from defensive ends.
But this guy is, I mean, listen, a lot of people are saying that this guy is the potential
unicorn at the position in this draft.
You don't seem impressed with Anthony Richardson, huh?
No, I think he's a very unique physical specimen that is incredibly raw,
who hasn't started many college games,
who makes easy throws look difficult.
I think he is an NFL athlete,
and if somebody is patient with him, like Seattle, say,
and says, listen, we're not playing you for a year.
We'll put you in a couple packages.
I think in Seattle, who has two first-round picks,
it's very tasty.
I think if he's your only pick, if you're the Colts,
and that's your first round pick when you have six boxes to check, it's a risk.
Then you probably go, the bodybuilder will levis.
But I think, I do think if you have two first round picks, you're Detroit,
you're Seattle, and you're like, we ain't playing you for a year.
But we're going to, you're worth one of those picks.
Quick reminder, when Lamar Jackson was drafted,
nobody said this guy's going to be an MVP of the league.
few years. When Patrick Mahomes was drafted, who remember? Time out.
Time out. Patrick Mahomes had thrown for a zillion yards in college. And by the way,
Lamar, I don't have Lamar Jackson's college stats in front of him, but he was a multiple
year college starter. Right. Yeah, this guy played 13 games. That's fair. That's the one not.
55% completion percentage. But just a reminder, nobody had Patrick Mahomes being a top 10
quarterback all time five years into his career when he was drafted.
Josh Allen, the meteoric rise that he had, like we've seen quarterbacks.
Now, again, those guys had more college starts.
You know what's happening, though?
And Josh Allen's the comp.
Sometimes somebody is just unique.
And so Mel Kuyper said about Josh Allen.
I remember this.
He had a list of the 10 greatest prospects at quarterback ever, Elway, Andrew Luck.
He had Allen nine or 10.
So, like, people in the league that I talked to were concerned about his wildness.
But Pete Carroll and John Snyder had Russell Wilson, flew to Wyoming to see the Josh Allen
workout.
That's right.
And privately, we're willing to move off Russell Wilson for Josh Allen.
So, I mean, Josh Allen, in NFL circles, was not seen, like Anthony Richards didn't say, I don't know.
Right, but at the same time, we didn't hear that we're ready to move off Russ
Wilson maybe until like two or three years into Josh Allen's career.
So there could be some stuff behind the scenes now.
That's fair.
People loving Richardson, but just keeping it low profile.
I don't know.
Anytime I see a lot of media, oh, it's Stroud or Bryce Young.
I'm like, well, what's going on here?
Why are we hearing this?
Yeah, you are appropriately cynical, which is what I like about you.
Appropriately cynical.
I'm going to put that in my bio.
A lot of people in the media, fans are fans, but there are a lot of people in media.
They just buy everything, hook, line, and sinker.
And I always say, when a story comes out, it's not about the story.
about why is the story out? Somebody wanted the story out. So the Bryce Young, C.J., now, sometimes
it's just good reporting. I have in my life. And so if you, somebody tells you something and you come
on the air and say it. But I do think there's a, I think that's justifiable and appropriate
cynicism that Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Carolina has already made their decision.
We got a month to go. It's a long process. Final story. How about this? After a 16-year hiatus,
The Sacramento Kings headed back to the playoffs.
They beat the Blazers by 40 last night.
Oh my gosh.
Damian Lillard bust out of place.
This will be the King's first playoff appearance since 2006,
snapping the longest major sports drought in the U.S.
As you said earlier, the Jets are now.
Oh, my God.
Aren't you?
As a Jet fan, how does that land for you?
I'm embarrassed, but whatever.
I thought those Buffalo Sabres were pretty good years ago.
I mean, I can't name one player.
Tigers have been, Tigers can't get the management right.
Ellen Trammell is still a shortstop for the Tigers?
No.
Anyways, how about the Kings?
Listen, I'm sure we got the tape somewhere.
Now, by the way, I thought the Kansas City Royals just won a World Series years ago.
We'll have a baseball moment.
Let's just talk about the King.
Give them their flowers here for an incredible season.
And somebody sitting on the set right now may have predicted that the Sacramento Kings.
You don't remember that?
Yes, you predicted the Jaguars to get to the playoffs.
I've had some good hits.
And you predicted the Sacramento team.
Here's what I don't understand.
Now, Dearon Fox has been really good for years, so we all knew that.
He's been good for years.
Really good late game player.
Is this a bonus his third team?
Why does he keep bouncing around the league?
He's been a good player.
He was definitely in Indiana.
I don't know about before that.
Am I wrong?
I thought this is a second team or is...
Oh, it's only his second team.
He was a Gonzaga guy, right?
Mark Few told me he was the best rebounder he'd ever had in the program.
Okay, so it's only a second team.
I don't know why I thought it was his third.
His pick and roll with Fox is incredible.
He's just a smart, heady player.
Like Davion Mitchell, the guy kid they got from Baylor, is a nice reserve.
And Red Velvet, Kevin Herder, you know who that is from the Atlanta Hawks.
Red-headed kid, red velvet.
That's a good nickname, come on.
Okay, I was right.
Okay.
Okay.
Sabonis is third team.
You don't mess with a wizard.
Where did he start?
Where did Savon start?
He went to the Thunder, then the Pacers, and the Kings.
So I don't understand why he's a bounce around the league guy.
Listen, sometimes it's just not a great fit.
And then you find it.
Find it, him and Fox, have something going on.
A little mind-meld action in Sacramento.
And like the beam, baby, the Kings are going to the show.
I'm excited.
They are a fun team to watch.
No, they're all offense, but they're fun.
Good for them.
Good for basketball.
Rudy Gobert says the NBA wants them to win.
That I don't agree with.
Going to push back on that.
A little bit.
All right.
Jay Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
I will say this story is interesting.
Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick's relationship appears to be icy after the NFL owner meetings.
Belichick will not give Mack Jones any public support.
Kraft is giving Mac Jones, quote, I'm a big fan of Mac, lots of public support.
Belichick, Kraft, Belichick apparently made some comment about in January the Patriots were 27th in cash spending.
craft retorted, cash will never be a problem as long as I own this team.
And I was saying this to the guys in the meeting this morning.
Belichick reminds me right now of a super successful corporate exec for like 20 years,
made a lot of money, did a lot of smart things.
And then the business he is in changed and he's no less smart,
but he's kind of tone deaf and he feels like he's a little outdated.
And when I watch Kansas City rebuild their receiving core in a year,
and New England can't figure out for about the fifth year, what does that tell you?
It's like I've said, Mike Tomlin can't, as a defensive coach, figure out how to rebuild the O-Line in five years in Pittsburgh.
Either can Sean McDermott, Buffalo five years.
Andy Reid does it in one year with Brett Veach.
I think there's a sensibility and an understanding of offense from offensive coaches.
Buffalo and Pittsburgh defensive coaches can't get the running game right, can't get the O'Line.
right. Andy Reed is finding running backs in the seventh round with Brett Veach, rebuilds his
O-line in one year, and is receiving corn a year. And it's easy to look at Kansas City and New
England and say it's all my homes. It's not Omaha homes. So I do think Bill's no less smart
than he used to be, but his handling of Mack Jones is outrageous to give him a defensive
coordinator as an offensive coordinator in year two is malpractice.
A corporate exec, the business changed, and you're just tone deaf.

Double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day
But just so y'all know
I mean at this point
Mark this is the second episode
where we've discussed crack
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line
We also have AIDS on the table right now

All right.
So April Fool's Day is this weekend.
NFL is adopting some new rule changes.
So we're going to call it rule or fool.
J-MAC is going to put out a proposed new rule.
And I have to guess if it's a real one or not.
I am interested to see how clever our team is with this.
Well, you already know the answer.
They're really clever.
Let's get started with a maximum of two of the team's jersey colors.
may come from the same quadrant of the NFL's AP color chart.
I don't even know what that means.
So your jersey can have two colors,
same quadrant of the NFL's AP color chart.
So I'm just going to say that's a rule.
Seriously?
Well, I mean, it sounded too sophisticated to be made out.
I think it was too.
The quadrant, there's no NFL AP color chart, dude.
I don't think.
Maybe I'm wrong.
Well, I still can't figure out...
They say it's fake.
I can't figure out how the NFL doles out compensatory picks.
Have you ever figured it out?
I've never looked into that.
I mean, it's like all of a sudden, San Francisco gets four six-round picks.
I'm like, how's that work out?
Maybe I'll do that on the beach.
I mean, it's salary cap.
Still, I have to ask my guys in the morning, and they'll get six answers on a salary cap.
There's stuff in this league that is confusing.
Players must tuck in the team jersey into their uniform pants,
and their pants must be below their knee level.
Well, that's a, yes, that's a rule in the NFL.
Yeah, that's a rule.
I know that one.
A player must make eye contact with a ref or side judge when trying to reestablish themselves back into the field of play.
Okay, eye contact.
Well, some guys, don't some guys have shields?
So that feels fake.
That's fake.
I gotta do a better job of hiding the laughter.
Towels are allowed to be kept only in the front waist of a player's place.
Now, that's interesting.
I've thought about this before.
as I'm watching a game
and I've thought about before,
what if it was to the side or the back,
I could grab it.
So I'm going to say
that is a rule.
Yes, that's a rule.
One player from every NFL team
is eligible to wear a three-digit
jersey number.
That's the dumbest one yet.
Our staff apparently was drinking during this.
That's a fake.
That's a, that's a,
Fake, yeah.
Prior to every opening toss, each silver piece shall be inspected and approved by the appointed master of coin.
Master of coin?
I think that's a fool. That's a fake.
Only the player who scored the touchdown is allowed to jump into the stands and celebrate with fans.
Let's think about this for a second.
That maybe sound nonsensical.
But what you don't want is to have seven guys, some big linemen jump into the stands,
and a little kid gets trapped and only the player who scores a touchdown.
What if the lineman scores a touchdown?
Then he can't jump in the stands?
I don't know.
But what they're doing, this is a safety thing.
It's Green Bay.
You don't want to, there's a little kid.
You don't need a dog pile in the front row.
I'm going to say this is a rule.
I even tried to talk you out of it.
Nicely done.
Sandwich rule.
Two players from the same team cannot make contact with an opponent from opposite sides simultaneously.
It's impossible.
That's fake. That's fake.
There's no way.
It's impossible.
I mean, if you're running back and you're going through the guard slot, and I'm a safety coming up, and that's impossible.
I mean, that, yeah.
It's not illegal to dunk the football in the goalpost unless you physically touch the goalpost.
rule is about touching only.
So the problem with this is that, so you're asking officials to be able to see up to the 10 foot mark
to see if your hand touches it.
Well, it's obvious.
I mean, if you're hanging on it, you're touching.
I don't think.
Well, I mean, it says here it's not illegal to dunk the football unless you physically touch it.
So if my hand touches it, a referee has to throw a flag.
That's fake.
That doesn't sound right.
That's a terrible rule.
Yeah.
So if I dunk it, so I go over and take this yellow pen, and this is the goal post,
and I score a game winning for a touchdown with two minutes left, and I go up and dunk it and my hand touches.
The other fan base can go, time out is hand touch the goal post.
Yeah, I mean, you're asking referees to get into a diet.
You don't want to put referees or pilots of planes into having to make on-the-fly tough decisions.
Right?
Yeah.
Right, that's why you have computers on planes and you don't make goofy rules like this.
Yeah.
All right.
If two players share the same first initial...
Oh, come on.
Come on.
And same last name on the 53-man roster.
The younger of the two teammates is required to add the next letter of their first name to the jersey.
So they're unique.
So it would be like a John and Jerry.
So here's what I wonder.
This isn't the classic.
It seems so arcane and absurd.
Do I believe my staff is smart enough to come up with this?
They had to create this out of thin air because nobody would have ever thought about this.
Well, the rules this week were happening.
It was a big topic at the other meetings.
By the way, do you know, every team every year gets to submit a rule?
Submit a rule.
This is really weird.
It's really cool.
But every team every year gets to submit.
I saw two of them.
I think the lions had a wacky one.
So I'm going to say this is a fool.
It's a fake.
A player can be fined up to $730 for every pound of body weight over the limit.
Limit of what?
Over the limit of what?
Whatever they deem the limit.
Yeah, I don't know.
That's a good question.
I don't understand what...
I would say that's a fool.
That's a fake.
Time out.
I don't know what the limit is.
A player can be fined $730 for every pound of body weight over the limit.
So what that's saying is, that's the maximum you can find a player if he is over a subscribed weight.
Maybe there's a threshold.
So Ryan said he has it.
Okay.
So for certain players, you can build into the contract that they need to be within a certain weight range.
So it is tolerated that that's allowed to be included in the contract, and you can be fined if you don't follow that language of the contract.
But $730 is the most you can find.
fine them per pound. Right, exactly. But like, obviously that weight's going to change if you're
a quarterback versus D-Lyman versus a wide receiver. So there's no weight limit. It's just allowed to be
put into the contract language. Ten pounds over the weight limit that's in your contract,
7300 bucks. I mean, that's probably pocket change to a lot of guys, but not a rookie. Not everybody.
The, okay, here we go. The fake drop is an alternate choice to a player permanently leaving
his team by deleting any and all mentions of the player's organization and or team.
on all social media platforms.
Again, this is so complicated.
It's called a fake drop.
Yeah.
Is when an...
You know what that means?
No, I don't.
Is an alternate choice to a player permanently leaving his team?
Now, I'm going to say it's fake.
It's too complicated.
One more.
One more.
All right, one more.
When a center snaps the ball and the ball flies between the quarterback's legs,
only the quarterback must be the next person to touch it.
First of all, when does a ball fly?
between the quarterback's legs.
Come on out of a shotgun.
Once a year.
Goes over their head between the legs to the side.
It says here between the quarterback's leg.
That can happen.
That's not a...
Once a year.
You're going to make a rule for...
That's happening more than once a year.
At least twice.
Only the quarterback...
So a running back can't touch it.
That's the rule.
That's stupid.
That's fake.
That's a terrible rule.
That's interesting.
That's a real rule.
That's a terrible rule.
Usually when you're in shotgun, there's not also a running back.
Well, yes, there is.
That's right.
You have a running back to your left or right?
Well, the running back's got to know you can't touch it.
It's got to be the QB.
You got to block.
So your basic, what if a running back?
So I'll give you an example.
There's a jet sweep and it happens.
You're saying that a receiver who's already in motion couldn't grab it and try to make a positive play out of it.
That's a terrible rule.
Take it up with Roger.
Drink a Dale on the phone tomorrow.
That's a bad rule.
Because what you don't want is negative plays.
You don't want a 20-yard loss because then you're basically,
limited to a punt.
So what you want is if there's a mistake made offensively,
you do want the offense to have an opportunity to make the most.
Like Mahomes may have this happen to him once a year.
You don't want Mahomes punting.
So if it goes between his legs and all of a sudden,
you know, one of their receivers flies by,
Sky Moore grabs it and turns it into a four-yard gain
and it's third and one, not second-22, I don't like that rule at all.
That's getable for Patrick Mahomes.
Daniel Jones probably not.
Yeah, that's interesting. Listen, the NFL has some arcane rules, coward.
Did you like that rule?
They're trying to eliminate punts.
Basically, the five times a year your center screws up, this guarantees the quarterback has to touch it.
Hey, center, do better. Don't make it five screwups a year. Make it maybe one.
You got to get a good center out there.
That's like saying, I'm not even going to go there.
That's just that will be rescinded in the next couple days.
Now that it's out there, the league has to rescind that.
I don't think so.
Okay, I'm done today.
Charlotte Flair, Chris Mannix, all good.
Great show.
See him on.
