No. No. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. Starting saying, Fran. The Brock Purdy-Tee-Lance saga is going to play out for a while here. Now, Purdy's on the shelf for six months. That has opened the door for four. 49ers tight end, Vernon Davis.

Remember him? Really, really good time in a long time. Great player. He believes the team should go with Trey Lance as the starter. Here's what Vernon Davis said. They can really do some wonderful things if they continue to

to figure out the pieces that need to go around everything and the pieces that need to come in. And they have that, but the one thing that everyone's asking is what are they going to do about the quarterback situation? To me, Trey Lans is the answer. You have Brock Purdy who came in and did some wonderful, made some wonderful plays for them, but is he the answer? I don't quite think so.

I think you have two quarterbacks there. Now when times get rough, someone goes down and at the next man. The Niners, and this is now a published report, they're concerned with Trey Lance. This has been reported now by sources in the Bay Area. Trey is not as explosive as an athlete as they thought, although, he is athletic. And he's really struggling arm fatigue and accuracy. If, my takeaway is, if he can get the accuracy to 62%.

Then you got a franchise quarterback because he's a smart. I know I'm smart kid, big body, and he's mobile. They thought they were getting a little more mobility. By the way, not a terrible thing. I don't want my quarterback running around that much. If he can get, because he is bigger, stronger, more athletic than purdy. If he can get up to, you don't have to be 68. You can get me to 62.5%.

63 in Kyle Shanahan's system. Then you've got a franchise quarterback. Because he does check a lot of boxes. He's not, according to reports, he's not as athletic as they thought, but he's athletic. He's not a statute. Checks a lot of boxes, but the one box he doesn't check is, like, how much has he played? The last four years. I know.

Remember, because they missed the year due to COVID when he was in, what, North Dakota State? And then he got hurt. I mean, he's barely played football. Like, I don't know what he is. Only the 49ers know for practice. And the fact that he hasn't gotten like a resounding vote of confidence is kind of not good. Remember when Mahomes was sitting out the year when Alex Smith was starting? You were hearing everybody was like, oh, my gosh, Mahomes is murdering practice.

There was videotape of him making throws. And everybody was like, Schroger, Peter Schroger was like, he's incredible at practice. Can I see one Tray Lance throws that he's made that was good? Like one practice? We'll see. Is that a lot? That's too much ass for? Let's be patient.

Next up, Lions offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson. We're big fans of him on this show. He's one of the popular names floating around for head coaching vacancies, but he decided to stay in Detroit. I'm happy. After leading them to a top five offense, I guess he couldn't just part ways with Jared Gough. Anyways.

God, can stop? Can we stop? Jared Gough had a good year. He was good. Here's what Ben Johnson said about resurrecting Jared Gough and playing with the Lions. This is as increasingly. I've been in my four years with the direction of the lines and where we're headed. And I kept going back to that as part of the process.

And you know what? There's so many good things going on here that so many good people, coaches, players. I love the offensive staff, everyone that we have on board there. I love the players. I love coming into work every day. Coach Campbell is incredible. And so end of the day, talking with my family, just it made sense. It made sense.

Don't ruin a good thing. They need to get a pass rush on the interior of the D-line. They get a little bit of an edge rush. They're not good on the interior of the D-line. I don't think their linebackers are that great, and they need a corner. But they're not a mile off. They're really not. They're, they're, they got to get, you know, maybe they go spend money for a corner

because they have had so many young players hit. Oh, Kuda. He got hurt. Yeah, the cornerback. I mean, they've hit on a lot of guys, though. A lot of draft picks. Yeah. Aidan Hutchinson was a monster.

Well, and, uh, I'm on St. Brown, better than I thought he would be. Good running backs. They're not paying a lot of good players. They have to go spend money in that division. You've got some nice receivers now. Christian Watson's becoming something. Justin Jefferson.

I think Claypool and Mooney are actually pretty talented guys. I think you've got to go get a corner and you've got to fix the interior of the defense. Colin, they could look at free agency in the draft and the Lions could say, we just need to put 98% of our energy on defense. and we'll be ready. Because that offense was a juggernaut this year.

They hung 35 on the Eagles early in the season. They went to Lambo at the end of that game, knowing that Seattle had won, and they had nothing to play for. And they outplayed the Packers in the second half. It's those high leverage moments where Ben Johnson delivered, the fourth downs. Clever.

They were just getting the first downs on fourth. And it wasn't with the cheap play, the push, you know? And by the way, I like the idea of, you know what? I like who I'm around. This is good. I don't need to take a bad job in Arizona or a bad. It's okay, Eric Bienemy. I know that Ben calls plays, but it's okay to stay with Great another year.

I'm worried about Bienemy. Stay with that. Let's dial it back. But the offense was really good for Detroit. Unbelievable. So he's staying with that side of the ball. He's not the blame for the secondary. I don't know.

I think Detroit's, we both agree they're a playoff team next year. The only problem is you can look online and every other guy out there and gal is taking the Lions to make the playoffs. We've been early on this team. You and I are not followers. We bought stock early. You know, now it's like one of these stocks that everybody's, yeah. You're right. Final story.

The Rams looking to create cap space and replenish their draft capital following a five and 12 debacle. Rams C-O-O-C-O-Kev was asked about the potential of trading away their Pro Bowl corner Jalen Ramsey. Here's a shocker. He didn't rule it out. Jalen's been a huge piece of what we've done. And I think for all of our players, it's going to be about figuring out what's best moving forward. But when you are a team like the Rams who's had success, we have a lot of great players. People are always inquiring about our talent. And it's not just Jalen.

We get calls on all of our good players all the time. And, you know, the next few months we'll see what direction this team goes, but could not be more grateful for Jalen for what he's done for the Rams leading this defense. Well, they're probably the cap, it's a weird situation. They could trade him now and get draft picks. And they need draft capital. But they would pay, have more dead cap money. If they wait until June 1st and move him, they don't get draft picks until the following year.

But then they get almost no dead cap money. So they're in a weird situation. Do they want draft capital, which is what I'd want? I'd deal with some dead cap stuff. But again, they've got a lot of big salaries. That's it. That Robinson move at receiver did not work. That feels like dead cap money.

They don't get nothing out of that. We just talked about Detroit. You said they need a corner. Call up Rams. Hey, what do you want for Jalen Rams? I don't know that he's a locked down elite cornerback, but he's certainly very good. Oh, yes, he is very good. Better than Sauce Gardner.

Stop. Get out of town. By the way, would the Rams do that deal in conference to get off Jalen Ramsey? For a corner, nobody cares. Yeah, they traded before. The bottom line in this, this all comes down to, do they value draft picks and have to deal with some dead cap, or do they want to do it later in the summer, and you don't get the draft picks until the following year? I think McVeigh wants to win now and put resources into offense.

So I think McVeigh's pounding the table saying move him now and get picks will deal with the dead cap stuff. That's my guess. I think McBae doesn't want to wait for draft picks next year. Yeah, he could have been in the booth. He went back to win. That's right. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news.

We don't get them on a Friday very much, especially after the football season. Very, very lucky today we get Peter. Okay, I said it yesterday. smart companies cut off a problem before it becomes a big problem. I don't like the rugby scrum. I think, Sean, I think next year, every team's going to use that thing four or five times a game. I think it's aesthetically unappealing. I don't like it.

I want the league to change it. And I know Eagle fans don't want to hear it. What do you make? There's discussion now by Dean Landino. That Philadelphia scrum, do you think it'll be addressed by the league? Absolutely. There's no question about it. and Colin, what has happened is that someone, namely the Philadelphia Eagles,

intelligently, has pushed this play beyond the limits of, to me, I don't want to say fair play, they're just playing by the rules. But it is a dumb rule. Always has been a dumb rule. You can line up two 300-pound guys in the backfield and push a quarter-fiel. and push a quarterback along with a really formidable offensive line. You know, it's just, it's not what football is. It's not what football was meant to be.

I believe the competition committee will address it and change the rule in the offseason. I don't know that. But any time the NFL sees something stupid happening, and this is stupid, they tend to fix it. Listen, Derek Carr is visiting the Jets. I think Carolina is a great fit. Frank Reich, weaker division. But the Jets do have an employee that used to be his quarterback coach in Oakland. So there's some, if you had to put on the swami hat and say Derek Carr, because I really have always liked Derek much more than the population football fans. I think he's somewhere in that 11, 12, 13th best quarterback in the league. I think he'd make the Jets very viable. I think he would win the division potentially with Frank Reich. What is your guess on this? Well, I've always thought since the end of this season that the Jets would really want to see what was out there with Aaron Rogers. But if they think that it's too risky and or Rogers is not worth it and the draft pick compensation is not worth it and you can get Derek Carr for free, I could see them going for Derek Carr. My only asterisk on Derek Carr is that Colin, he was in a perfect situation this year.

He had the best receiver he's ever played with, Devante Adams. He had another really good receiver, even though he was hurt a bunch in Hunter Renfro. And he had one of the quarterback-friendliest coaches in football in Josh McDaniels. Something went south with that offense. I don't know what it was. They're doing a very good job of keeping that in-house. house, but I would wonder why was his completion percentage down 8% when he's in such a good system for a quarterback?

You know, what happened to Derek Carr? I'd want to know all those answers before I got serious about Derek Carr. So this sounds crazy, but we saw the Jets almost, you know, a seven-win team that was a mess at quarterback, and we saw the Seahawks make the playoffs. What did they have in common? They crushed the draft. They got four and five starters, all really nice players. The Bears need about five draft picks to hit.

Last year, they took a corner of safety. Both were excellent. So I said, if Justin Fields is as marvelous, and I'm 60, 40, he's good. I don't think he's great. You could go to the Falcons. He's from Georgia. I'll throw this out to you, Peter. Bears need a lot of players.

Minnesota and Green Bay, Detroit, all have better rosters. You go to Atlanta and say, give us, your eighth pick will give you Justin Fields the backup as Marcus Mario to similar styles. You don't stay at number one because you don't think Bryce Young, a small quarterback in the Chicago weather works. You then call Indy and say, we'll give you the number one pick. We'll take your four because you want Bryce Young because I heard your owner say it three days ago. I think Chicago needs a certain, they need a Seahawk draft to be viable. They need a lot of players, Peter.

And if you draft Will Anderson, it doesn't move the needle, Detroit, Minnesota, Green Bay. So when I hear the Justin Field rumors that there is part of me, Peter, that kind of buys them. Do you buy it at all? No. And I don't know factually that they wouldn't listen on Justin Fields. But tell me this, Colin, you could talk about all the draft choices

you wanted. Remember when Miami would have given five ones to move up to get Joe Burrow and the Bengals smartly said no? I'm not saying that Justin Fields is Joe Burrow. What I am saying is with the worst receiver core in football last year, getting the crap beat out of him, he rushed in 15 games. He rushed for 1100 yards. And yeah, he completed only 60% of his passes. That's got to be a little bit better. It will be better if they add two receivers and they get better there. I think it's ridiculous to think about trading a guy who the coaches like, who I can tell you, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy really likes and who he wants to keep working with. So I would doubt they were going to trade him, nor do I think they should trade him.

Okay, let me throw another quarterback dilemma at you. the kiss of death to remove yourself from the Super Bowl is paying a B, B minus quarterback, a lot of money. Tanna Hill, Dack, Kirk Cousins. You'll win them with stars or talented young guys you're not paying yet. A golf, a Jalen Hertz. If you pay $35 million for Daniel Jones, it's kind of you've removed yours. You've put yourself in that, in that space that I just watch history. You're not a Super Bowl team.

What do you do with Daniel Jones? the Mara family doesn't like chaos. He's got some Eli qualities with the media. He's very humble, good kid. What do you do in New York? Well, you know, when I started hearing this stuff about 35 million a year, that bothered me. Yeah. And it bothers me because it bothers me very simply because, you know, what really is Daniel Jones accomplished.

So I think what you ought to try to do is do a short-term. deal. You know, two years, 70 million, three years, 100, I don't know, something like that. But I don't understand a real long-term deal at 35 million a year because even though I'm sure that Brian Daibold and Joe Shane really like this quarterback, how he's kind of won them over now, in my opinion, I really think that this is a time for the Giants to have at least one more year to see if Daniel Jones is their long-term guy. I'm not I'm not buying in for four years at 35 or 40 million. No, yeah, yeah. Finally, you have been covering this league since 1984. I thought for a long time Elway was the most talented quarterback I ever saw, brain power, arm, mobility. I said this last

week. I'm not talking about goat trophies. I think coachability, intelligence, arm angles, ability to play from deep behind, ad libability. I think Mahomes is the most talented quarterback I've seen. Do you put him in kind of rarefied air? Where do you put him? I mean, you know, all I know, Colin, is that Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady, by the time each was 27, had gotten his team to three Super Bowls. Mahomes won two, Brady won three.

And by the time they were 27 years old, in all games, in all starts, regular season and playoffs. Tom Brady, 80% victories. Patrick Mahomes, 80% victories. And so all, you know, and Mahomes does more things. Okay. Now, that doesn't mean that he's going to play for 17 more years. It just doesn't.

You have no idea what's going to happen. But I can tell you this. Patrick Mahomes loves Tom Brady. Tom Brady has meant a lot to Patrick Mahomes, going back to the overtime championship game at Arrowhead that the Patriots won, that Brady spent 12 to 15 minutes with him after the game saying, you are unbelievably good. I admire you.

You're doing it. Just keep doing what you're doing. And all you have to do is look at what he did this year. Play with a high ankle sprain, get it aggravated in the Super Bowl, and win his second Super Bowl. Play incredible in the second half. Four possessions, three touchdowns, and a field goal. Just, you know, Patrick Mahomes is the it thing right now.

We call the segment Tomorrow's Headlines Today. What's it going to be the headline for the NBA All-Star game in Salt Lake City?

Well, Coward, I know you're going to be watching. You're coming off the slopes. You've got a, what do you eat, vodka rocks in your hand. That's right. Gin and Tonic. I've got to fire up the All-Star game. You know why? because you want to see who's going to win.

And I'll tell you right now, the headline will be Salt Lake Gritty. Team LeBron dances on Team Yannis. I'm going with LeBron. Now, they're going to draft the teams right before the game. Very cool. Yeah. Right? I like that.

It's a new tweak. And we know LeBron knows how to build a team, obviously, whether it's in L.A., Cleveland, Miami. He knows how to put together a team. Obviously, LeBron is the pick here. And I know you're kind of sour on the 186-184 game. I'm just going to say give the Ilam ending a chance. It's this new thing they tried last year. Super popular.

It seems to get the players more energized. People are trying defensively in the fourth quarter. I think the NBA All-Star Games fun. I like it. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today. Who's going to be the MVP? Difficult, not knowing who's on what roster,

but I'm going to ride a guy that I really love. You're not a huge fan of his work. The headline will be born Altitate. Jason bred to be MVP. Listen, I'm all in on Jason Tatum. I was looking at some of these numbers, Colin. First of all, he's 24 years old. Every single year he's been in the league. He's improved his scoring. Career highs in rebounds, assists, field goal percentage. Like, Jason Tatum is having an unbelievable year. As a isolation talent, you get it on the wing. Like, you can't guard him. He's unstoppable. I think this is the year he breaks through. He wins an all-star game MVP. By the way, he was the NBA MVP leader earlier this season before Yokich went crazy. But I think you need to put a little more respect on Jason Tatum's name. Top five player in the NBA right now, for sure. Tomorrow's headlines today. Who's going to be the slam dunk king?

Dunk contest has been on hard times for a few years, but they did something interesting this year. They pulled this guy up from the G League. He's a dunking machine. Stop laughing. The headline will be Mac Attack. McClung Dunks leave everyone gasping for air. I know you don't know who this guy is.

I've read about him. You know about Mack McClung. Okay. So I grew up in Northern Virginia, so I followed like Virginia high school basketball. This dude was an unbelievable talent. Dunking machine. He had hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers because he's like the 6-2 white guy doing these aerial dunks. So they brought him into the dunk contest.

I'm just calling it right now. I follow him on social media. He's done some things in some of these dunks that are going to be like, oh, that's new. Like Zach Levine, my guy, remember him? He made a name for himself in the dunk contest. I think Mac McLung shows out and wins the dunk contest Saturday night. All right. Let's go back to football pivot there.

Tomorrow's headlines today. Super Bowl next year. What's it going to be, baby? All right. So this is way early, okay, before free agency before the draft. Everybody's talking Dynasty Chiefs. We agree it's a Dynasty book. Can they repeat?

I don't think so. The headline will be Bengals Borough Mahomes dreams of back-to-back. Yes, Cincinnati Bengals winning the Super Bowl next year. Offensive line injuries. This team's very good.

They're not going to be losing anybody in free agency the way the chiefs have to restructure because of Mahomes contract. I like the Bengals to win the Super Bowl. They were close two years ago. They were in the Rams. That's my early, early pick to win the Super Bowl next year. Not bad at all. That'd be my second. but I think it's a very viable second.

They don't have good receivers. I don't know how Giants fans aren't pushing for Carr over Daniel Jones. I think Derek Carr's got a reputation, undeserved, that he's soft. And he is more fourth quarter comebacks than any quarterback in the league, including

Mahalm since he entered it. He's got this reputation. He's, you know, he's not this. I mean, because he's a really nice guy. I don't know. I think he's a very good late game quarterback. I don't like the giant. I mean, I disagree with Peter King.

I think the Bears' receivers are better than the Giants. I think Mooney's the best on both teams and Claypool would be the second best. I don't like the giant. Listen, Day Bowl's great. That's why coach of the year. They got to get some perimeter speed. It's going to be tough for them to get to the playoffs again next year. Oh, I totally agree.
