Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer,
Starting point is 00:00:18 Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:11 You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes,
Starting point is 00:01:36 follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:04 What up? Welcome in. This is the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening to the show. Thanks so much for joining us. I'm Doug Gottlieb in for Colin Cowherd. Don't worry. Uncle Colin is back next week. Colin's back next week.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Andrew Brand is going to join us in 15 minutes. We'll ask him about Lamar Jackson's contract demands and about Aaron Rod. and what the world would look like for the Packers if they did attempt to trade. If they were going to trade Aaron Rogers, what would their cap look like? How could they function in terms of putting a roster together? We got a lot to get to. I want to start with the story of the day, which is one that is authored by the athletics, the athletics, Mike Sandow, Jason Jenkins, and Kaelin Kaler, who joined us earlier on in the show.
Starting point is 00:03:06 And there's a lot to it. It's really interesting. It's, hey, what went wrong for Russell Wilson? Because all of us, if we're honest, of all the things that's surprised in the NFL. Now, if you go back to the preseason predictions, there are some teams that people predicted to be good that weren't good. There are some predictions that people thought would fall off that didn't fall off. I will point out that I didn't have any sort of legitimate reason why I picked the Chiefs to come out of the AFC West, other than they got Pat Mahomes, they got Andy Reed, and until further notice,
Starting point is 00:03:41 I'm taking the Chiefs. That ended up being correct. I still don't think the Chiefs are better than the Bengals. I'm not sure they're better than the Chargers. They're not better than a lot of the teams, the bills. But when push comes to shove, those two combine, they just find a way. Just find a way. And it's really remarkable.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Whereas, and Chiefs fans will admit to this, and most of us, if we search our memory Banks before Pat Mahomes, it was the opposite. They weren't the chargers in terms of their ineptitude, but they weren't that far off. That was a team that would get to the playoffs and find a way to lose. What were they up? 313 or something against the 28th? What was it? Against the Indianapolis Colts and Andrew Luck come back?
Starting point is 00:04:28 It's like a decade ago. So Andy Reid couldn't get out of the first round until he got Pat Mahomes. Now he's once again a Super Bowl champion head coach. but of all the predictions that have gone wrong, the Seahawks being bottom feeders, and the Denver Broncos challenging for a Super Bowl, were both wrong. And the reason is Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:04:52 The thought was that Russell Wilson would be a dude, and if you looked at the Denver team, you put a legit quarterback with that defense, an offensive-minded head coach, and you'd be great. And it was anything but. Meanwhile, the Seahawks, surprised everybody and they end up going to the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:05:13 It's crazy. The story that's out in the athletic details this first year with the Broncos. But it also looks back at his exit from Seattle, which apparently culminated in him asking ownership to fire John Schneider and Pete Carroll, the GM and the head coach. and instead he was traded. Oops. Oops.
Starting point is 00:05:42 The irony to it, the interesting part to it is that the coach he won at the time with Sean Peyton and lo and behold, now he has Sean Payton as his head coach. There's more to the details of the story which are interesting. You know, like things that you say aren't always received the way in which you expect to receive them to be received. Does that make sense, right? the famous Bill Clinton, it all depends on your definition of is,
Starting point is 00:06:11 is, in regards to his office. So he had an office. And look, there's lots of quarterbacks in the league that have some sort of special privileges. Ben Rathesberger's last year in Pittsburgh, he had like a secret door that he'd go into and get away from
Starting point is 00:06:30 the crush to the locker room and of the media. Inside that secret door, at a big screen, had a big lazy boy. And I was told by one of his teammates, a bunch of hunting and fishing magazines, nothing to do with football. And Ben didn't like the offense, didn't want to buy into it,
Starting point is 00:06:51 didn't want to turn his back to the defense and run play action. So he'd just disappear into that room. I love the idea of a secret door. Wasn't it Webster? Was that the show that they lived at the big house and Emmanuel Lewis, but they had like all the secret door? Are I remembering that correctly, Jason?
Starting point is 00:07:09 I think you might be conflating it with Silver Spoons. No, Silver Spoons was the big house, but I remember Webster having secret doors. Okay. All right. I'll confirm. I'll get back to you. I mean, if I ever built a big house, I think I would include secret doors and secret rooms. I think that would be amazing.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Do people still build houses with secret doors and secret rooms? Well, those panic rooms for the zombie apocalypse. Right. There is the zombie apocalypse, which it has to be upon us. I mean, so many other things in movies have come to fruition. My guess is flying cars and zombie apocalypse have to be next. Just a guess. But the office thing is interesting, right?
Starting point is 00:07:56 I don't currently have an office. At CBS, I did have an office. At ESPN, I did not. although in their negotiations to keep me at the end of the five things I asked for, the only one that ultimately would have come through would be an office. That's a true story. Cowherd was the first one to have an office. And in all candor, like, it kind of made some sense because of how Colin does what he does,
Starting point is 00:08:25 right? He likes to have a little staff meeting. He likes, and he was doing two shows at the time. He was doing old sports nation. Remember that bad boy? So he'd do Sports Nation and then he would let me go home. But in between the two shows, it's just a way to close the door and close your eyes and kind of find yourself a little bit. When he got the office, Greenberg already had an office, but he had an office because the top level sports center guys all have offices.
Starting point is 00:08:55 All the ESPN News guys and part-time sports center guys, they had they had, they had, they had, the cubicles. So among my last requests, Jay Stu, were, hey, you know, I'd really like an office. I'm there. They're like, why do you need an office? It's like, well, I'm doing the live sports center at 9 a.m. My show is not until 4 p.m. I don't go home.
Starting point is 00:09:17 I do whatever you guys want. Just can I have a place where I can close the door. And finally, right before I turned down their offer, I was just like, I just want an office. And I'm like, okay, we'll finally, we'll get your office. You ever had an office, Jay? Yeah, I've had an office. When you were with the Rome show, did you have an office? Had an office with the Rome show, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:36 It feels great in office. It does feel good, but then you're like, do I got to decorate this thing? I think that's my flaw with my office is I wish somebody else would have decorated. But it sounds like you wanted a bed. You wanted like a bedroom as opposed to an office. Well, I did the Constanza thing. I slept underneath the desk all the time. I just wanted a place where it's quiet.
Starting point is 00:09:56 You know, especially in what we do, there's always, you're always talking, which means you have your own voice in your ear. or you're talking to somebody or you're interviewing somebody or there's just people around. So that at those environments, you want an office just to shut the world out just so it's quiet. You know, just so it's quiet. Yeah, but I would want to bed because, you know, I have that power to catnap. I have that like partial sometimes narcolepsy really comes in handy when you're doing a couple of shows. Just like, hey, you see me do it.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Just lean back my chair, 10 minutes. sometimes even five minutes during the break and I'm good refreshed like a new dude. In a 1987 episode during a massive snowstorm, Webster got trapped in a secret passage in the house. See, I was correct. Boom. There were secret passages.
Starting point is 00:10:49 But this has been a year where, I mean, Russell Wilson's just gotten exposed as being, you know, a phony. That's it. It reminds me I had my freshman year at Notre Dame. You know, guys get dorm nicknames. There was a guy who is known as surfer dude. And to this day, I don't believe I know his name. He was surfer dude. And coming from Southern California, when I got a chance
Starting point is 00:11:18 to meet surfer dude, I was like drawn to him. I was like, oh, you surf? Yeah. Do you surf? Like, well, I've surfed, but I'm not a surfer. Like, the one thing you know to not be, especially in Orange County, is a poser. Like, can he get on a board? Does not make you a surfer. A surfer is like, bro let's go let's go it's not me but surfer dude had this rep of being the surfer in the dorm Dylan Hall was the dorm
Starting point is 00:11:48 and when you walked into his room that was back when people had the shell necklaces and he had shells from all these places that he said he had surfed and surfing posters up there whatever all over his wall he had long hair like long like sandy brown blonde hair, like just kind of look the part. From the Jersey Shore, and he's like, yeah, dude,
Starting point is 00:12:11 where I'm from in Jersey, we surf every day. I'm really missing it. I was like, wow, I'm kind of in. This is surfer dude. Surfer dude. So one night there was a dorm party, and it spilled over into his room, and somebody bumped into the desk that had the shells on it. The shells rattled and turned over,
Starting point is 00:12:31 and they had price tags on them. Surfer dude was exposed. Yeah, it comes back from Chris's break, hair cut, surfer stuff completely out of the room. And he was back to being a regular dude like, his name was like Dave. And Dave completely changed him. It's like, all right. Like we all want to like reinvent ourselves, I guess, in college. He tried.
Starting point is 00:12:57 It wasn't working. We move on. Real Surfer dude story. That's, that's Russell Wilson. Like, I don't think he needs to repair the image of being a phony. Like he tweeted out that, you know, that it's categorically false. It's not true. He loved Pete Carroll.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Oh, I love Pete Carroll. It's like a second father to me. Okay, can we stop with the second father thing? You don't want to be traded away from a second father. That's not how it works, right? Not how it works at all. I don't know. Maybe sometimes you want to, but in totality you don't.
Starting point is 00:13:33 Russell Wilson doesn't have to worry about, you know, changing his image. and getting back to being this kind of beloved folk hero and all the cheesy expressions and sayings and believe in being unlimited, unlimited. Forget about all that. What I want to take from it is he had a throwing coach in the offices the entire time up until the last two weeks and he forgot how to throw a football.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Fire that dude. Figure out how you get back to throwing it right. Change your body back to being. in shape. All right. Let's up. Coming up next, we're going to welcome
Starting point is 00:14:13 in Andrew Brandt. We'll get his take on can the Packers really trade, can they afford to trade Aaron Rogers? And the Ravens don't want to give
Starting point is 00:14:25 Lamar Jackson a five-year guaranteed contract. He only wants a fully guaranteed five-year contract. Is there wiggle room in it? Can you build a team
Starting point is 00:14:34 with it? What would he do if he was in this situation? We'll ask him. I'll come in next in the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.

Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tontons and wampas on the ice planet
Starting point is 00:16:39 hot or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Doug Gottlieb in for Colinist the Hurd, Fox Sports Radio, IHart Radio app. All right, lots of stuff going on in the NFL. Teams getting their books in order for the end of this fiscal year in the NFL. And, of course, getting ready for free agency, getting ready for the draft. who better to help us out than Andrew Brand.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Of course, he's the host of the Business of Sports podcast. He's also a former vice president of the Green Bay Packers. He spent a decade as a player agent and, of course, as an NFL team executive, he joins us in the herd. Andrew, I want to start with the Lamar Jackson story, where, and basically it feels like a leak from Baltimore, where every offer that they have made to him has been rebuffed under the premise that he wants a fully guaranteed contract, just like Deshaun Watson.
Starting point is 00:17:44 What are your thoughts on the likelihood that he ultimately gets it? Yeah, I was going to be with you, Doug. This is going on for a long time, and, yeah, these leaks are going to come, because he has set his stance in the cement saying, I'd like to be treated like Deshaun Watson was treated, and I'm sure the Ravens are trying to explain away that contract, unique circumstances, basically like a free agent, whatever it is. But listen, I admire Lamar Jackson because I'm a lawyer.
Starting point is 00:18:15 That Watson deal is out there. It's precedent. And why not push for it? And everyone asks me, they probably ask you too, why don't these NFL players have contracts like baseball and basketball players? It's more injury-prone sport. And the only way that's going to happen is if players push the envelope after Watson, because now they've set the table with Watson.
Starting point is 00:18:38 Can other players push through? And then you get a host of quarterbacks with these deals. And then you push through another position. And then sooner or later you're like basketball and baseball. But it doesn't seem to be happening. And this whole conversation is kind of moot, Doug, because of this weapon that NFL teams have called the franchise tag. And if they use the tag on them, you know, we watch and wait,
Starting point is 00:19:02 but we don't get to that decision point of a contract. But isn't the injury-prone aspect of the sport a gigantic reason why, like why would you give Lamar, like forget the Sean Watson for a contract for a second? Why would you give a guy who's missed 14 games past two years? They completely guaranteed deal, considering how he plays position over the next five years. I mean, the argument could be made from the other side, too. He has proved himself valuable by missing. I mean, I think that's the argument from the Ravens. Well, the likelihood it is the way he plays, he's going to get more hurt and more dinged up.
Starting point is 00:19:48 These haven't been major injuries. He hasn't sustained one yet. And the older you get, you lose a little bit of that speed. You get hit. And, I mean, like, look at Cam Newton. And after his MVP year, he was never really the same because the hits that he took. Now, Lamar hasn't taken a ton of hits, but he's going to, right? I mean, that's just the nature of the position, the way in which he plays.
Starting point is 00:20:07 the position. But again, even in his young prime, he's played, he's missed 10 of their last 22 games. And what we're told is in the NFL, availability is as important as ability. Why would you give him, it's not like he's,
Starting point is 00:20:23 I mean, Christian McCaffrey first for years, didn't miss a game, a snap. They give him a long-term contract, can't stay on the field. Lamar Jackson, why would you give him that deal? Here's the reality, Doug. First of all, there's no one, there's no conversation going on in the Walter Ravens offices that goes like this.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Hey, let's just let him go in the free agent market. Right? There's no one. And if that ever would happen, he would get that. He would get a five-year fully guaranteed contract because then he'd have what Watson had. He'd have bidding. And he'd be negotiating not just with the Ravens, but with all these teams. When you're asking, why would the Ravens do XYZ?
Starting point is 00:21:05 Well, then you're sort of the same question is, why would they franchise tag them again and again because they're setting the market, they might put a $45 million franchise tag on them, which would seem to me you pay them $45 a year. But it's this guarantee that you can't prove collusion. But I'm sure all these owners are like freaking Haslin, we're not doing that. He's trying to screw us.
Starting point is 00:21:32 We're not going to get there. Aaron Rogers contract. Obviously, you signed Aaron Rogers to his, first contract with Green Bay Packers. I'm looking at the deal and I'm doing it through a, through a SPO track. Okay. So I'm looking at the deal and I see these numbers and I want to know what they mean in regards to if he's traded. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:57 So this year, for example, it says the base is $1.165 million. The signing is $12.9 million. Okay. Now, forget about the fact that I believe all of that was paid up front, right? Like the way it works. So he has all that cash. Okay, there's a $14.575 million option. There's a $50,000 workout bonus.
Starting point is 00:22:22 $2.852 million in restructure. The cap hit is $31.6 million in change. And the dead cap number is $99.778 million. Okay. Explain it. What does that mean if they trade him, how much of it stays on the books? After you went through all that, let's just make it pretty simple. He's got $59 million in cash due this year.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Most of it's an option bonus, and that option bonus you read out as sort of the pro-rated, assuming it's exercised. A team, not necessarily the Packers, has it up until the start of the season to exercise the option, which makes me believe this is a contract meant to be traded. the dead money would be 40 million. So it would be basically 40 million. Wait, wait, what part, go back real quick. What part leads you to believe that it's a contract meant to be traded?
Starting point is 00:23:17 Because the way this money is structured for 2023 is it's an option bonus, which is something like $57 to $58 million. And that option bonus doesn't have to be exercised until the start of the season. Right now it's on the books as salary. but it can be in the books as an option bonus, which is pro-rated starting this year, which is those numbers that Spotrack has as if they've already exercised it, which they haven't.
Starting point is 00:23:47 So in other words, you traded out the new team exercises the option, the new team gets better cap treatment on the contract. But here are the numbers, $40 million. That's a lot of dead money, but the bigger number is $60 million. That is, if he is on the roster of the Packers this year and traded next year, the dead money goes up. I've never seen a contract like this.
Starting point is 00:24:11 Where dead money is going up rather than down, the longer he plays, again telling me this is a pivot point for the contract. So they trade Rogers this year. They take on a $40 million hit. It's basically what the Falcons took on trading Ryan last year, and they're done with them, if that happens. They went all in last year, but they have a way to get out. That's pretty onerous, but not as owner says it would be next year.
Starting point is 00:24:41 But why does it say, I'm sorry to interrupt, why does it say potential out after the second year is $24.48 million? I don't know what that means. I'm telling you how I read the contract. Okay. I mean, you are the expert. You've written it. That's why I asked you.
Starting point is 00:24:58 So they're better off trading him than keeping him in terms of their cap flexibility. Right? They're better off moving on this year than next year, yes. And I sort of amused when everyone's talking about a three-year, 150, whatever he signed last year. To me, it was a one-year deal, and now they look at this option, and they figure out what to do. So they've prepared for this, and I think beyond all this, I don't have inside knowledge. I know people think I talk to the Packers. I talk to Aaron.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Here's my thought. I just think there's going to be a separation. It just seems like it's time. It's eerily similar to us 15 years ago. We had Aaron Rogers in the bullpen for three years, first round pick behind the Hall of Famer. Now they've had Jordan Rogers in the bullpen three years, first round pick behind the Hall of Famer.
Starting point is 00:25:53 I don't see them going to Jordan Love and saying, hey, by the way, you're not going to play until your fifth year. And maybe not your sixth year. Come on. Not that anyone cares about Jordan Love, but I think they want to get them on the field. Do they really want to trade away, one of the great quarterbacks in the history of the league?
Starting point is 00:26:12 Well, and then out personally, I just feel like it's time. And I think Aaron feels it's time too. I would be surprised if he comes out of his darkness and says, I want to stay. I just feel like, because I don't know if they want him to stay. I think they'll take him, you know.
Starting point is 00:26:34 I think they'll take him back, but I think they've prepared for a move. It's all similar to years ago when we used to go down to Mississippi and beg Brett, and at the end we'd like, okay, Brett, whatever you want to do, we're ready to move on if you decide to move on. So I sense that similarity now. Andrew Brandt joining us, the Business of Sports is his business. You can follow him on social media. You can get his Sunday 7 newsletter.
Starting point is 00:27:02 You can listen to his Business of Sports podcast. He joins us in the herd. I'm Doug Gottlieb, filming for Colin, here on Fox Sports Radio. Daniel Jones' fifth year option wasn't picked up. And he just switched agents, right? Which signals to me, and again, you've done this from the agent side. You've done it from the team side. So tell me if I'm wrong.
Starting point is 00:27:24 When a guy's in a contract negotiation and he switches agents, that means whatever feedback he was getting from his current agent, the number was low. And now all of a sudden it's like, oh, 45, millions to target. Whoever, his new agent told him, hey, man, we can get you 45 minutes. I think David Dunn actually is this new agent, who's Aaron Rogers' agent, right? And his new agent's like, dude, the market is 45, not 35.
Starting point is 00:27:46 Is that reasonable for what took place? Yeah, I think we're looking at another tag here. I mean, I think the $32 million tag seems low for Lamar Jackson seems high for Daniel Jones. And by the way, Gino Smith, but we may get all three. and Daniel Jones could, as you just mentioned, he could have been optioned and being paid 19, 20, 21 million this year. But that was a former regime. We'll give it that. It was a former regime.
Starting point is 00:28:15 The new regime is much higher on Daniel Jones than the former regime. And now they're going to have to pay through the nose. There are a lot of people out there saying, well, why can't you pay Daniel Jones, you know, 20 to 25 million? Well, that's where we are in the sport right now. You know, why would he do that? Why would he take a middle deal when everyone's getting $35, $40 million, even quarterbacks they wouldn't think would? Okay, but here's the question.
Starting point is 00:28:42 And that's, it's a great question you brought up and let me kind of further it. Okay. What no one has done is said, all right, you can get $45 million? Go ahead, fine in the market. Right. Go ahead, find the market. Like, no one is willing to do that. Now, I wouldn't, there's guys you wouldn't do with Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:29:00 you wouldn't do it with Tom Brady or Russell Wilson in his prime or Pat Mahomes. But with Daniel Jones, who I think people like him, but the idea like $45 million, how come no one has done that? Because the truth is there is really no middle class in this market. Right. There's starting quarterback money and then there's backup quarterback money and then rookie contracts. That's really it. And those type of guys, you would think, like, heck, even Jimmy Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:29:29 That should be a 20, 25 million a year guy where it's reasonable for the club. It's a ton of money for the player. He's not a $45 million guy. How come nobody's done that? Let a guy play the market. Well, the answer is in the question. How come no one has done that? Because no one has done that.
Starting point is 00:29:47 It's like you've got to have a quarterback. What do you do if you don't? What do the Giants do if they don't have Daniel Jones? Are they really going to start over it? The guys on the market every year, you know the nether. names, it's unusual suspects. It's Tyrod Taylor. It's Chase Daniel. It's Josh McCown. When you get a real guy on the market, you see what happens? She sees what happens with Kirk Cousins. She saw what happened with Sean Watson, kind of on the market. And it would happen with Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Now, maybe we're in a unique year because Aaron might be out there, Garabo car. But I don't know. Beyond Aaron, maybe Jones is the most, would be the, the hottest prospect instead of car. So it would take, the lack of a better word, really balsy GM to say that. But what's the plan besides that? You're going to draft someone? You just went to the playoffs and with Daniel Jones and now you're going to start over. You know, that's how these quarterbacks have the leverage.
Starting point is 00:30:51 It is except for, you know, San Francisco had a loaded roster around the last pick of the NFL draft, right? We see enough of these guys. where we're like, I mean, that's what Washington's doing that. Washington's like, we got a young guy, he doesn't make much money, we're going to fill out the rest of our roster and build around him. That's what they appear to be doing. Yeah, and they may, I don't know if they're going to get rid of Wendt, who's making $30 million, but they did that last year.
Starting point is 00:31:14 They've gone through it. And yes, the 49ers struck lightning in a bottle, but we can't get them off the hook because they mortgaged the future for the quarterback that was hurt before Purdy. And he'll be the starter, not Purdy. So we'll see. Great stuff, as always. Andrew, thanks so much for joining us.
Starting point is 00:31:33 We love having you on, incredible perspective, and appreciate to join us on Fox Sports Radio. Always a pleasure, Doug. Take care. All right, that's one and only Andrew Brent. Check out a Sunday 7 newsletter. And, of course, you go listen to his Business of Sports podcast. Let's get to some herd line news with Jason Stewart.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Jay Stu? No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herdline news. What up, Jay. Doug, ESPN, specifically. Specifically, Brian Winhorse says that Paul George drove the decision for the clippers to pick up Russell Westbrook. Winhorse says that Paul pushed for it publicly and privately.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Kauai Leonard was on board. They looked at it a little bit more and they made it happen. The clippers, I guess, were initially reluctant to do it. What do you make of this report, Doug? again, rabbi in the room, somebody who's worked with you before, who believes in you and believes, hey, I got it, I can control it.
Starting point is 00:32:32 I know Russ. Russ is a good dude. He'll be good with me. This is where executives in the league are all like, yeah, I'm good. We got a playoff team. I don't need that. But it's going to be interesting in L.A.
Starting point is 00:32:48 You have Ty Lou that could have been the Lakers coach. They wouldn't give him a fourth year guaranteed. He's the Clippers coach. You got Paul George who forever I'm telling you when Paul George was said to be a free agent Hey the Lakers organization They were completely sure he wanted to be a Laker He's always grown up wanting to be a Laker
Starting point is 00:33:07 He's a clipper Kauai was the guy who was like yeah I never really wanted to be with the LeBron the circus or whatever And now you have Russell Westbrook Like these are all the anti-Laker clippers But I just I don't know Like I get that PG had a good experience with him
Starting point is 00:33:23 but I can't say that that experience was shared in Houston by the Rockets, in D.C. by the Wizards, or with the Lakers, most importantly. At some point, he is who he is. That and you brought in a Bones Highland who, like the guys in Denver are just crushing in terms of his selfishness and lack of awareness of who he is and what he should do in the league. I don't know. It's going to take some Tailu magic, but this is where Tailu's at his best.
Starting point is 00:33:49 Now, Paul George and Westbrook were teammates, on the Thunder. Yes. And was that a success? Was that Dean? Did that work? No. No.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Remember they lost in the first round to Utah? And that was when Russ grabbed the guy's cell phone when he was storming off the court. And then they went to, you know, I think part of the solid that they felt like was they went to management. It's like, this is just not going to happen. We're not going to win a championship. Can you trade us away? And that's when he was sent to the Clippers. and Russell eventually sent to the rockets.
Starting point is 00:34:26 Now, different team, same building. The Lakers got off to a great start of this final stretch last night, right? Yes. Their new look, they look good. New look Lakers, yes. 24 to 124 to 113 went over the Warriors last night. Now, DeAngelo or Russell did step on somebody's foot early in that game, missed the rest of the game,
Starting point is 00:34:47 had X-rays that were negative for a break. turns out he has a sprained ankle. What are your thoughts on kind of how DeAngelo fits into this mix and how this ankle injury might, I don't know, postpone his effectiveness with the Wakers? See, full disclosure, when they drafted DeAngelo Russell, I thought he was a mix of James Hardin and Steph Curry. Right? Lefty, crafty, could pass, can make plays.
Starting point is 00:35:15 You know, it doesn't play a ton of defense. Also, can be an elite shooter. and he just established his reputation as a guy time and again who can really score and statistically be good, but not a winning player. And like, I don't even know if last night's not an indictment. They win, he barely plays. You know, Minnesota's in the playoffs. They trade away their starting point card from Mike Conlin. What does it tell you?
Starting point is 00:35:41 You know, Brooklyn felt like they were better when he was gone. So the challenge for D'Ango Russell is to prove he's a winning player. and, you know, the highlight plays don't matter. It's will he defend? Can he make open shots? Can he play without the basketball? I don't know. But he's also now, obviously, the third weapon,
Starting point is 00:36:01 and he's got some dudes around him, but his reputation is not that of a winning player. He's got a chance to change that. If I'm the Lakers, I'm in no hurry to negotiate a long-term deal. None. Zero, especially on a four-year. Two-year, maybe, but I'm in no hurry. I want to see how this thing plays out.
Starting point is 00:36:19 Last one here. The Washington Post is reporting that Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, has hired an investment firm named Allen & Company to evaluate a potential bid for the Washington commanders. Daniel Snyder reportedly wants up to $7 billion to sell his team. I want your thoughts on how you think Bezos would fit in as an NFL owner if there's anything to this. But I guess the first question is when Bezos said, Alexa, please call that investment company. Did Alexa reply with, sure, now playing the song Investment Company by Wilco on Pandora Music. I don't even know. Is that really a Wilco song?
Starting point is 00:37:09 I don't know. But I wanted to make that up just to show how much of a joke Alexa could be and how unhelpful she is. Thanks, Alexa. Appreciate that, Alexa, for that update. I mean, it is interesting. It's like, you had people when this thing first came out like, oh, I wonder if this guy will get in. What of that guy? Like, once Jeff Bezos says he's interested, like, who on earth can really challenge him in terms of how much money he has?
Starting point is 00:37:33 But supposedly Bezos won't go a penny over 6.3, right? I ain't going to penny over $6.3 billion. How does it play out? Somewhere between 6.3 and $7 billion. And Bezos ends up getting a team. He's won a team forever. I'm sure that's why they gave him. they got the Amazon deal done.
Starting point is 00:37:52 You know, if you're Goodell, you want the richest dudes in the world owning your teams so that money's never a problem. It has to be the right guy because they've got to get a new stadium built. Anybody who comes in after Steiner's going to get beloved. And you can hate Dan Snyder all you want. He's obviously a good businessman, and he's going to pocket, you know, somewhere in the $6.5 billion range for his football team. If the Washington commanders,
Starting point is 00:38:19 who had to change nicknames twice, don't have a good stadium. And they got to build a stadium. There were $6.3 or $6.5 billion. Can you imagine the evaluation of some of these other teams? So because of that, all these other owners are going to want that sale to be done. I would guess he'll come off his $7 billion price tag
Starting point is 00:38:42 and meet him somewhere in the middle. And that is Jason Stewart with the news. Well, that's the news. Thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. What would that be like to buy something for $6.3 or $7 billion? It's pretty cool. How would you know?
Starting point is 00:39:01 Oh, you haven't done it? No. No. I'd love to get to the part where you run your, you get money out of an ATM and you don't check your balance. Wouldn't you love that? Bezos reportedly is worth $119 million. dollars. So, and again, if you're buying the Washington commanders, it's not like you're spending $7 billion and not getting any return on investment. You may lose some money on a yearly basis,
Starting point is 00:39:30 but the value is only going to go up. So it's an investment. It's not really a purchase. Investment, not really a purchase. No, I have not purchased anything at that. I tend to like let my money, let my $7 billion chill in the bank. That's what I like to do. Russell Wilson tried and failed to get his coach fired. And maybe think of some of the athletes over the years that have had a reputation as a coach killer. I'll share those with you as best for last is next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 00:40:04 Paulie Fusco here with Tony Fuscoe. Yo, of course you know us as the host of the number one rated Pauley and Tony Fusco show. World renown. Starting point is 00:42:44 or wherever you get your podcast. podcast. Doug Gottlieven for Colin. Aherd, Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio app. Oh, we got a good weekend ahead of us. A lot of hoop on the docket, pro and college. Let's get to the best for last, shall we? After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet.
Starting point is 00:43:08 Quit holding out on us, Cowherd. It's the best for last. Ah, yes, you got the coach killers. Okay, so the big story. sure of the day is Russell Wilson tried to get Pete Carroll and John Schneider, that's the GM of the Seahawks, tried to get him fired in order to stay in Seattle. You know, like the reverse Jimmy Chitwood. If you don't know what Jimmy Chitwood is, like, I don't know if I can help you. Sam, have you seen, you've seen Hoosiers, right? You're an Iowa guy. I mean, of course you've seen that.
Starting point is 00:43:41 Jay Stu, you've seen Hoosiers? You recall when I say the Jimmy Chitwood reference? I definitely know the reference. I've seen the movie. I just don't know it as much as you do you talk about it a lot on our show you don't know the reference if you say yeah I know that no no I know the reference sure yeah I remember he made the power move he made what was the power move um to get jean hackman as the coach of the team or he what he do and he played come on man just say I don't know it you don't remember it you don't got to yeah he didn't get a lie this is like this is like a like a book report when I was a kid you know that thing with a guy with the thing. Okay, so
Starting point is 00:44:17 Jimmy Chitwood is the best player on the team, but he's not playing. He refuses to play. He doesn't come to practice. You know, and when Gene Hackman's character goes to visit his mom, he's out there shooting hoops or I don't know if his mom or his aunt, that part I forget. Anyway,
Starting point is 00:44:35 they're going to have a town meeting after like a handful of games. And in that town meeting, they take out like a little straw poll to see if the coach stays or just coach shows. They already took the pole. And then Chitwood comes in from shooting hoops outside, hands the ball. I got something to say.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Well, Jimmy, you better go say it. So he gets up there and he says, I think it's time for me to start playing ball. And there's some guy, great character actor. Sam, I don't remember the name. I don't know if you. And he's like, all we have to do is get rid of that guy. Right? He's talking about Gene Hackman.
Starting point is 00:45:06 And that's when Chitwood flexes his muscle. He's like, one more thing. Coach stays I play. Coach goes, I go. which by the way, any of this like LeBron James, I'm not a shadow GM, I don't hire and fire coaches, that all may be true. But if LeBron walks in and says,
Starting point is 00:45:24 he stays, I stay, he goes, I go. Then nobody gets traded. Right? None of these guys get fired. None of these guys get hired unless LeBron says, okay. But in terms of the all-time coach killers, that's the reverse Jimmy Chitwood. I got a list of,
Starting point is 00:45:44 I got a list of, five for you? Can I get a number, one of those big voice number five. Number five. Larry Bird. You're like, what? Larry Bird got Bill Fitchfired. That was his first coach in the NBA. They went from 19 wins to like 59 wins or something.
Starting point is 00:46:01 Larry Bird got his first coach fire. Larry Bird, old-fashioned coach killer. Number four. Baron Davis. Go look and track. Barron Davis, one of the most talented guys to ever play in the NBA. never won really anything outside of one series with the Warriors where they got an upset. But Baron Davis was a guy who his first order of business when he would get to town would be get the coach fired.
Starting point is 00:46:28 Number three. Kyrie Irving. Oh man. I mean, this is Kyrie's deal, right? He didn't try and get Brad Stevens fired, but he didn't exactly help Brad Stevens. He gets to Brooklyn. And, I mean, he just undercut all authority. Then when Jack Vaughn was named the acting head coach, he didn't go down into the bubble and train.
Starting point is 00:46:56 He said, we don't really need a head coach or whatever. Oh, Carrie Irman is a coach killer. I just, I don't think he can off Jason Kitt. Number two. I'm going to go with Dwight Howard, right? Remember when Dwight Howard got, like, totally lied about trying to get Stan Van Gundy fire? and Stan Van Gunny's like, yeah, he tried to give me fired, but no big deal. That was amazing.
Starting point is 00:47:21 That was an all-timer. All-timer. Number one. We should have just done all-NBA, right? I was going to say, are you going to mix in another sport? Well, I thought I could have gotten, you know, Billy Martin, but he got fired so many times. I could have done some more NFL players. But, I mean, in terms of coach killer, Latrelle's Freewell literally tried to kill his coach.
Starting point is 00:47:41 So I don't know how anything stacks up to that. Taking it to the literal. Coach Killer. And that is the best for last. A quick update on the dog and the 90 plus sausage treats that have been eaten. Let's just say it's not agreeing with his stomach all that much. And there's a pungent air that's not a Friday in the room. I'm just going to point that.
Starting point is 00:48:06 We're just going to share that one with you. Download my all-ball podcast. It's really good with Shaka Smart. I think you'll really, really like it. And I'll give you some college. picks on Twitter over the weekend. Have a great weekend. Collins back Monday.
