in the last 30 years in the league. So I saw a picture this weekend of a golf event that Aaron Rogers Brady Mahomes were at. And so Josh Allen was at it. So Josh Allen and Brady are very tall men.

So Brady is standing next to Aaron Rogers and Brady towers over it. Aaron's about six, one and a half and Brady towers over it. Aaron is three inches taller than Bryce Young is. It is reported now, he is five, ten and a half. So Brady is noticeably like half a head taller than Aaron. The picture it really jumps out. 6, 4 and a half, 6.5. Aaron's about 6.1.5.

So a player that is noticeably shorter than Aaron, who doesn't have Aaron's arm, how can I not be concerned with a small warm weather quarterback in the NFL? You tell me, Joe. I think you're right to be concerned because when you're a short quarterback, you have a hard time seeing the middle of the field because your offensive alignment are that much taller than you. And so you either have to be really good like Drew Breeze was at. being able to drop a ball into a small trash can in the middle of the field,

predicting where your receivers are going to be because you can't see them and you're just going off of instinct and you're going off of what you practiced. Or you've got to be able to get outside of the pocket. And the problem is when you're a slight quarterback, just like Bryce Young is, when you get outside the pocket, eventually you're going to get hit and you're going to get hit again and again and again. And those hits, they add up. And so when you're talking about the most important position in football

and when you're building an offense around a quarterback that is a little bit smaller. Yes, he's a good athlete. He's probably going to showcase some of that athleticism within that offense. But if he's not there, then what do you do? Like, you're going to just plan on playing with a quarterback that's not going to be available for 60% of the games a year, half the games. I don't know. I think that's definitely a concern.

And if you're taking a flyer on a third or fourth round guy, that's one thing. But when you're going to make him a top five pick, you need to have a great degree of certainty that he's going to be available and that he's going to have a high ceiling for what you want to build an offense around. Yeah. So you're going to be at the combine this weekend doing some stuff, NFL network on the offensive line. And it's a very good year for tackles. There's three or four in the first round. You know, the draft is interesting. 30% of the first round, you know, doesn't work. Do you think players are more equipped today or less equipped to come into the NFL and start and play?

I think they're less equipped because the difference between what college teams are running and what NFL teams are running, in my opinion, has never been greater. There's such a chasm of the techniques in the schemes that college teams are running and what players are asked to do at the NFL game that they have a ton of learning that they have to do that I didn't have to do when I was coming out of Wisconsin in 2007. and that's one of the great benefits that I had and that a lot of guys of my generation was, hey, it's easy to plug and play on the offensive line or a lot of these other positions because what we ran at Wisconsin was a version of what I was running my rookie year when I was with the Browns.

Yeah. So when, I got to ask you, we have, as you get ready for the combine, J-Mack and I have talked about this. There are three or four things that I look for? Do you have, are you going to be cognitively good enough? Will Levis, his mom went to Yale, granddad to Cornell. He's got a big brain. Go to video, he's got a huge arm. So I don't worry.

Brain and arm, he's really good. He's also been doubted, like Joe Burrow, Brady, Russell Wilson. He had to transfer out of Penn State to Kentucky. But the thing I really look at, Joe, is that he played in a football conference at a non-football school. And so Will Levis had to overcome constantly. He didn't have Georgia athletes. BAM athletes, Auburn athletes, LSU athletes, Texas A&M athletes. You go back to your NFL career.

On the quarterbacks you played with, I contend toughness and resilience is wildly underrated. Otherwise, all these Ohio State guys would go from high school college to pro and be great. They've never had a great NFL quarterback. I like my college quarterback to be kicked around a little bit to get sacked, to get pushed around. you played with a lot of quarterbacks. You tell me the value of a guy that didn't play at a traditional power that came in having to overcome. I think toughness and resiliency is something that gets revealed, and it's not something that necessarily can be trained.

And that's why I think it's great to see a guy that has gone through some tough times, that's gone through maybe a difficult path, that has had to show some of those character traits that, that you're going to value as a quarterback because if you're a guy that, let's say, maybe just went to Alabama and had just all sorts of success, you may be a tough guy. You may have that resiliency inside of you, but we just don't know yet because it hasn't been revealed yet. And so I think having those quarterbacks like a Will Levis, who you know he's got it inside

of you, you're never going to have to wonder when he has those challenging moments throughout his rookie season or a second season in the NFL because you know they're coming. It doesn't matter what the name says on the back of your jersey, whether it's Manning or Brady or any of the other great quarterbacks of all time in NFL history, they struggle when you're a rookie, especially at that quarterback position. And so how is that guy going to handle those struggles? Is he going to go into a turtle shell and then have no confidence and not be able to get over that and be able to overcome?

Or is he going to be like, hey, I've been here before. I know the roadmap out of this and I'm going to be the guy that says, put the team on my back, let's go forward, let's make it happen. And so I think finding out about that guy before you draft him is a huge benefit and definitely will leave us. He is a guy that benefits from that. Finally, quarterbacks get paid more. You can't hit him in practice. I'm not saying teammates resent them, but they are, it's the most privileged position in the league.

I do wonder about teammates of Aaron Rogers sitting there thinking, bro, just make a decision. We already can't hit you at practice. You're the highest paid. You get all the endorsements. I get it, right? Like I get quarterbacks being, I mean, Russell Wilson gets his own office. Do you think it can turn into a situation where even if you kind of like him,

that there could be resentment for him holding this organization, hostage is too strong, but holding everybody at bay after a while? I think they could resent it a little bit, but they also know that their best chance to go win a Super Bowl is with Aaron Rogers that quarterback. And so as long as the performance is there at the quarterback position, I think as players in that locker room, you're going to let him get away with whatever he wants to because you know you've got to have him out there. And he's so much different than the next guy that potentially is available. But to your point about the Russell Wilson situation,

the resentment starts becoming pretty vocal. When you do have those extra abilities to have your own locker and you got your own parking spot and are you a coach? Are you an owner? Are you you a player. Nobody really knows what you are because you're treated differently. And then you'd go out and you lay an egg and you don't perform. That's when the teammates really start having a problem with it and you start hearing about it like you didn't see it in Denver this past year. All right. Finally, you were drafted out of Wisconsin, a third pick, a lock to be a great left tackle. You're going to go into the Hall of Fame with this class. And I asked you during the break, I want you to share the story, is that you were seen as sort of a, you know, tackles don't go

first, second, or third much. You did. And you're a 10-time pro bowler. You, Jonathan Ogden, there's a handful of guys, and there's not a lot. Trent Williams, you can see it when they play. This is totally different. And now you're going to be at the Combine. And there's going to be four or five left tackles taken in this first round. When did you go back to your first NFL game? You probably didn't have that gray beard. You're a kid out of Wisconsin. You dominated Purdue in Illinois, and all of a sudden, your first NFL game, your left tackle for the Browns, who were you playing and who was the rush end?

Week one, welcome to the NFL moment 2007. The Cleveland Browns are hosting James Harrison and the Pittsburgh Steelers going on to his way to be the defensive player of the year, and that's the guy I got a block. And in hindsight, I feel like I probably did okay, knowing that it was my first game in the NFL, but the way the offensive line coach crawled in my butt after that game about how I played,

I didn't feel very confident going into week two against Justin Smith of the Cincinnati Bengals, all pro at two positions on the defensive line during his career. So there are no easy wins in the NFL, unlike college replay. Just a couple good teams, maybe one or two All-Americans every season at the most. In the NFL, they're all-Americans. about that Harrison first game Steelers. You're left to tackle out of Wisconsin. Congratulations on the

J-Mac with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. By the way, you are a diehard fan, right? Oh, the first one. I'll never forget. My parents took us to see it on vacation.

And there was like 25 F-bombs in the first 10 minutes. And my parents were trying to drag us out. Me and my brother were like, no way, we've got to stay. It was epic stuff. All right, let's start with. This is surprising. A big hire in the NBA mid-season. Former jazz coach Quinn Snyder got a five-year deal with Atlanta.

He's replacing Nate McMillan, who was, I'll say it politely, runoff by Trey Young. Listen, the Hawks two years ago got to the Eastern Conference Finals. Kind of middling right now. They're eighth in the east. It looks like they're going to be in the playing, which is not great. But this is an interesting hire. Listen, Trey Young, remember, they took him when they could have taken Luca. Brock underwhelmed the bit.

They did do the big trade for DeJante Murray. I think Quinn Snyder's one of the smartest guys in the league. He's an excellent coach. Yeah, and I think he's really, he's pro player. I think when he left Utah, it was, you don't see coaches do that much. He just knew there was no point. Like they were going to move. Gobert didn't get along with Donovan Mitchell.

He did the best job possible to make that thing work. I've met Quinn a couple of times. He was the best high school basketball player in my state, my senior year of high school. Mercer Island. Islanders, he was a great player. He weighed about a buck 40. Run fast dunk. Mid-range game. Went to Duke, got his law degree, super bright guy. But when he left Utah, and Utah is a very well-run organization. They've had a terrific year. It kind of signaled like, I think I've done as much as I can do. I'm surprised he's been off the, you know, he's been out of work this long.

He's a really sharp dude. You don't take an NBA job unless you've got a star. And I believe Trey Young is a star. I don't know. Are we aligned on this or not? I think he's a star. I think I like Tray Young. He's small. He's small. He doesn't play a lot of defense. I think analytically, he's like one of the five worst players in the NBA defensively. Yeah, he's bad. But so is Kyrie, and so is

Luca, and so was James Hardin. And so you've got to score the ball in the league, and Trey can do that. I'll put this out there. Hawks, possibly. If they can get the six seed, Brooklyn's falling. The Hawks could match up with the Sixers in the first round. Trey Young and the Hawks

beat the Sixers. Remember the famous Ben Simmons game where he passed the ball. Joel Embedde had eight turnovers in that game. It's not a great matchup for the Sixers. Colin, I'll just put it on your radar. The Sixers are the team to watch this offseason. Remember James Hardin, a lot of chatter that he wants to go back to Houston. He enjoys the after-hours scene there, shall we say?

I don't... I know Hardin's having a better year. Never trust him in the postseason. Too flaky for me. By the way, M.Beed's never been to a conference finals in his career. Tray Young has already. Remember that was his rookie year. They beat the Knicks.

Wasn't he all? Was that the... Well, he beat the Knicks where he was taking the bow, and then they beat M.B. And they went to the conference finals and lost. But I like this Hawks team. That wasn't his rookie year. Not his rookie year.

Probably second or third year. But just keep an eye on Atlanta. All right, let's go back to the NFL. The Rams, 5 and 12 last year, just awful after winning the Super Bowl. And Cowherd, you need to do a victory lap here. According to the NFL Network, it's very likely Jalen Ramsey's going to be dealt in the coming weeks to save cap space. They also reported that, uh, Bobby Wagner is going to be released.

Now, this is weird, Colin. Why would you announce it's very likely that Jalen Ramsey is going to be traded? Well, usually, well, hold on. Usually trades just happen. I wonder if there's not a robust market for Jalen Ramsey, and the Rams are just putting up a flag. Hey, everybody, Jailen Ramsey's for sale. Any takers?

Okay, so I think they don't have a number one pick. They don't have a first round pick. They have a second and a third, a bunch of six. So I think they want to get a first and a fourth Or like two-twos And the market may be a one You get a first-round pick I'll put this out there

I don't think they're getting one What do you think they're getting? I think that's the problem They're not getting a one So that's why they're going to NFL network Okay Hey let everybody know we're trading Jalen Randolph Would you give up a second and a fifth

What team am I? Detroit And they got two ones and two-tues Detroit's got a lot of picks Detroit has drafted pretty well The last couple years No but I'm saying I like this Detroit team

But Detroit can give you their 18th, so they have, I think Detroit's got like the sixth and the 18th. A lot of it is who I'm bidding against. If I'm Detroit, I would say no. But Detroit needs a corner. They do badly. And they're not paying a lot of their stars. They're not paying their offensive linemen yet. Hawkinson's not getting paid.

I don't think yet. Amaron St. Brown's not. Is Hawkinson getting paid? They got a young court. Or they traded Hawkinson, in Minnesota. My bad. Yeah, my bad. Amaron, St. Brown's not getting paid.

Penaisoul's not getting paid. Their running backs aren't getting paid. Hutchison's not. getting paid. A lot of their now their defenses needs work. They need interior defensive linemen, but if you look at a lot of their top players, Jared Goffs obviously getting

paid. But if you look at a lot of their top players, they're not getting paid so you can afford a big contract on the outside. And by the way, you could give up the 18th pick in the first round. I still think they have the, I think it's sixth. Yeah. So I mean, Detroit says we got two first round picks. We're not going to give you

our six. Because that's a starter and that's a defensive lineman we need. But we'll give you the 18th for Jalen Ramsey. I would do that. And I would still have a one. I think they have two twos, two ones, two twos. That's a little rich for my... I just don't know if Ramsey...

18th is... Is he going to be locked in in Detroit? You tell me a college player who's better than the 18th picking this draft. There is no college player... It's a fair counter. Now, no, no. He's more expensive, but you got cap space. He's also...

I don't know. I probably should say it, but... You don't like him? I just don't know if he's a cultural fit in what Detroit... Detroit is building. Dillianz is a very big personality. No, the knock on him is he's not a guy you're going to build around Jacksonville, L.A. You know, Bobby Wagner had that personality.

There are players. He's going to make plays. But I joked on this show once he was, I called him a pile inspector because he doesn't like to tackle. And let's just say I heard from some people. Jail Ler Mums, he, listen. He watches the shows. He listens.

I like him a lot. If I was Detroit, would I give up the 18th pick and a five? Absolutely. Detroit really has a lot of elements I mean if you go look at what Detroit has they have the they could probably use one more receiver they got the quarterback two backs. O'Line's fantastic and edge rusher.

What they don't have because is it Jeff Okuda from Ohio? Okuda, he's been injured and he's just not been the guy. But they have not whiffed on a lot of picks in recent years last couple of this group of executives. Yeah. So it's like to me the only positions I'm going to pay

for. One of them in a division with Justin Jefferson with Christian Watson looks like a star. Yeah. So I mean, and by the way, don't be surprised if the bears don't get DeAndre Hopkins because the bears have a lot of money. So my takeaway is

Jalen Ramsey is, is he worth the 18th pick in the draft? Absolutely I would do it. Absolutely I would do it. We'll make a gentleman's wager. I don't think they get a first round pick for him. Okay, so you don't think, okay, so Let's make a wager. No, just a gentleman's wager.

Listen, once I had the haircut, no haircut, I'm not messing around with that. How about dinner at our steakhouse in Manhattan Beach? Deal. Final story. Bryce Young will not throw at the NFL Combine and Indy this week. Young will instead wait for Alabama's Pro Day. You know, the setting's going to be perfect there.

Goodness gracious. Pro days are garbage. The decision comes despite the fact that C.J. Stroud is throwing Anthony Richardson. Can't call him AR-15 anymore, by the way. And Will Levis will all throw. in Indy, Todd McShay of ESPN reported that one scout has young measured at five feet, 10 and a half inches. It's absolutely an issue.

Abtua acknowledges. I can't see over the O line sometimes. And he gets ragdolled. So, like, all it takes is one toss to the turf of Bryce Allen on that cold soldier field. I'm not doing it. Now, I do think, Colin, like a Bryce Young in a dome scenario, like a Detroit. Oh, no. Absolutely.

Absolutely. But we also should point out, Joe Burrow had a joke on social media when his hand was measured. Remember that small hand measurement? Joe Burroughs like, I might have to retire. My hands are too small. Joe Burroughs worked out fine. So some of this stuff. Jared Goff got to a Super Bowl.

He had a small hand issue. I don't care about that. I mean, it's some, Kenny Pickett looked pretty good to me. Seven of his last nine starts, he won. It's not the, what you worry about with that is if you plan a wet, windy city, ball security. I don't know. I don't know. That's not the big.

Bryce Young's highlight real. Let's be real. incredible from Alabama. So is Tuas and AJ McCarrens and everybody says. See that's what people don't want to understand. It's just not a great quarterback draft. It's okay to say that. The two places in the country that literally have three NFL receivers are Ohio State and Bama. You're throwing every year they got three NFL receivers and I guarantee you they don't face a single team that has three NFL corners. So it's just hard to measure. And Ohio State and Bama always have NFL offensive linemen. So and great coaching. So it's comfortable.

Even in the SEC, Bama quarterbacks tend to be comfortable outside of the game against Georgia. So rank the four guys, Levis, Young, Stroud, and we'll toss Richardson in there just for stuff. Well, I think the most fascinating talent is the Kentucky kid. C.J. Stroud, I worry that you're throwing to this wide. C.J. Stroud has his size is good. How much did his final game impact? He was unbelievable. He was unbelievable. So he's absolutely a first round pick.

Bryce Young to the Colts indoors and a warm weather conference that's different than Chicago again it's Kyler Murray okay so the Colts should just trade up for him move up to one and get your guy

I still have huge issues 510 and a half 190 pound quarterback offensive line overwhelmed last year but the pieces are there right they just don't have a left tackle if memory serves Sean Payton you can't go off prototype top 10

I think that that was was a Bill Parcells thing, right? Didn't he say Parcells kind of taught him? I think Parcells was pretty smart. Yeah. This is... That was my knock on Baker. Baker's an NFL quarterback. He was a little small, okay arm, wasn't a great athlete. That's not a number one pick. And I think over a three year span, Baker had the most passes batted down in the line of scrimmage in the league. You're a quarterback. You're not a top... I mean, Mitch Trubisky. I'll never forget when Mitch Trubisky came into the league. And I was in Hawaii with my family, and Greg Kosell had told me keep your on Trebisky. So I was...

went and watched, it was a bowl game against like Florida State or it was Florida State Carolina and I'm like, that's not a, he didn't have an arm. The ball died at 20 yards. I'm like, that's a draftable quarterback. That's not a top 10. Was he a top five guy? He got some, I don't remember where he was drafted in the first round. He was overdrafted significant. Absolutely.

So, uh, Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. lively Monday. A lot of stuff going on. So I just bet a steak dinner. What was the, what was the bet on? Jalen Ramsey? Jalen Ramsey will not fetch the first round. Ryan, would you draft the 18th pick in the first round for Jalen Ramsey if you were in a division with Justin Jefferson, an emerging star in Christian Watson and the Bears may go get D-Hop? No doubt about it, especially because you have two. So it's not as if you're not going to be able to get a premier player either way. I'm not giving you the six, because that's a starter. But the 18th pick, as GMs,

always tell you, you run out of first round players at about 16, 17, and then from like 18, 19, the third round, everybody's a second round player. They're all second, they all grade as second round players. There's always about 15 to 16 first round guys. So my guess is Jalen Ramsey is going to be better significantly than the 18th player in the draft. So my counter would be, and you've done all, you know real estate, right? You don't go to a house and say, and they, they offer, let's just say, they want $1 million for the house. You don't say, oh yeah, I'll give you $1 million for that house. You want to know who you're bidding against. How many other offers do you have? If the house is sitting there, maybe you offer $750.

Why am I giving up the 18th pick when I could get him for like the 35th pick? If nobody else is offering a first, why should I? I don't want to overpay for Jalen Ramsey? That's a reasonable argument. That's better than reasonable. But I got news for you. If you're looking for a beachfront house, the owner's not going to give you a 25% discount. There are multiple offers. You can't get beachfront property for a million dollars in L.A.? That's terrible news. Not in the beaches around here.

So, yeah, the, it is interesting regarding, you know, the NFL draft is that Sean Peyton talked about this. We got Sean Payton for like 35 minutes, 30 minutes every Monday for like three and a

half, four months. And this has been proven over time is that your top 15 to 18 picks in the draft, top 15, 16, those are your gold bars. Those are guys that will walk in and start for you. Even for a good team, they'll walk in and start. And then you have another 40 picks, like 17 to like top of the third. Those are guys that will start. May not start, but they'll be good, good players.

And then after that, you know, you third, fourth round guys are going to be contributors, but you can't take big swings on people. Baker Mayfield is not what a number one pick looks like. He was a little small. His arm was okay. If you take a big swing, Jamarcus Russell out of LSU was a quarterback, he was a disaster,

but I got, you get, 6-6, huge arm. Like, I didn't love Cam Newton, but I got as a number one pick. I think I was a monster physically. He didn't look like other players. Joe Thomas gets drafted third. Jonathan Oglin. Guys look the part, right?

you're like, that's a number one pick. Generally, I wouldn't take a running back, but like Adrian Peterson was such a dominant college back or Zeke Elliott, you're like, I get that. Baker didn't look like a number one pick. So a couple months ago, we're talking about Bryce Young. Bryce is small. You know, ideally you'd like a quarterback to be about six, two and a half minimum, and about 220.

Ideally, six, three and a half, a bigger, I mean, the greatest quarterbacks ever, you look at your mannings and your bradies they're big men i've stood next to patin manning he's a big guy he's 6 5 he's 2 35 big physical guy so brys young's like a buck 95 10 and a half and that was one of the concerns a lot of people had about tua tua is small well he's been injured a lot kiler murray i brought it up i was good kailer murray's been dinged a lot so sean peyton talked about size when you're talking about a number one picker a top 10 pick. Let's do this. Let's not draft small players in the first 15 picks of the draft anymore in the first round. Let's not get away from prototype. And I talk with Bill Parcells about this, Ron Wolfe, and those early picks have to be prototype players. You have to pay attention

to typing and when you're looking at the health of players and you're looking at the size of players. And for the record, as quarterback has become more valuable, there have been significant reaches at that position. You don't see a lot of people taking small tackles or slow corners or you don't. But Mitch Trubisky, huge reach. Daniel Jones to me, not a size reach, but a talent reach. Baker Mayfield, a reach.

Why? Because what's happened is the position, Baker was a reach, is so valuable and so necessary to win. And there's so much desperation by teams, people are taking huge, huge risks at that position on undersized players. You don't see a lot of other positions. You're not seeing small edge rushers taken in the top 10 picks, tiny corners, undersized tight ends. No, it's because this position has become

so crucial to winning. So I get it. But boy, and again, I think Bryce Young is a spectacular talent. But as a number one pick, wow, that's 5, 10, and a half, 190 pounds. And let's also remind people that we're not

in the room interviewing these quarterbacks. We don't know what's in here. They're not at the whiteboard in front of us answering random questions. So there's a lot of still stuff we don't know. We're going on the outside, perspective and what we talk to, you know, agents. We're seeing a lot of leaks now. People are saying we're concerned.

All we're saying is Sean Payton acknowledged it. You've got to be careful on this stuff. Well, you know, who's leaking this, Colin? Is it maybe somebody that wants to trade up? So now all of a sudden, Chicago, asking price just went down? That's a good point. This guy's pretty sharp. We'll see you tomorrow live in L.A.
