Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard Podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Now let's get this party started.
Starting point is 00:01:56 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, the All-Star game is on Fox. It's tomorrow night. I am proud. It's in the Pacific Northwest in Seattle, where I grew up as a kid watching bad mariner teams at the Kingdom. Derek Jeter is now part of Fox. And when I think of Derek, I don't just think of 20 years with the Yankees exclusively with the bombers.
Starting point is 00:02:17 I don't just think of the five times as a World Series champ. I think of him as clutch. He was also unbelievable in All-Star games, in postseason games. games, which he played over 150. Derek Giner, our pleasure, joining us now live from Seattle. Yeah. Thanks for having me, Colin. You know, I'm a little disappointed.
Starting point is 00:02:36 You're from here and you're not here. I know. Yeah. You should be on site. Yes, I should be. Thank you for mentioning that. You know, you could rub up to the bosses here before the game and give a little heads up on that.
Starting point is 00:02:46 You actually, you were obviously a great postseason player. We talked about that 15 minutes ago. You were like a beer league softball player in the All-Star game. You hit 480 in All-Star games. So what was it? Because you're facing the best pitchers, and you just rolled? You know, it's a good question. I have no idea how to answer that.
Starting point is 00:03:10 I think it's, you have to enjoy the stage. You enjoy the stage of an All-Star game. You enjoy the stage of post-season. And you've got to have fun. You know, I never treated those games like they were any different. I think sometimes players getting post-season games are getting an All-Star game. they try to put a little bit more pressure on themselves. But I just enjoyed it and I had a good time.
Starting point is 00:03:28 And look, there's a lot of luck that came my way as well. You know, Derek, I was thinking about this. I always had this theory on New York. If you became a star and grew with the city, Aaron Judge, Posada, you, Eli Manning, Michael Strayhand, Jalen Brunson with the Knicks, you don't enter as a star, you become one in New York. The city will have your back forever.
Starting point is 00:03:51 But if you come in as a star, A-Rod, Mello, John Carlos Stanton has a lot of pressure. And when the Mets go out and spend a lot of money, man, that's a lot of pressure. Do you sense sometimes it is harder to not grow in New York but be a star when you come? Without question. I think the thing is, is when you come up in New York, you know, the fan base, they watch you struggle, they watch you grow, they see you every single day. And then when you come in as a free agent, the only time they see you're in the highlights.
Starting point is 00:04:23 They see you hitting home runs. It's the driving runners in. They see the success. And then when they come and you struggle a little bit like every single player does, I think the fan base looks at it like I've never seen this before. This is what is not what we signed. So it is much more difficult, I think, to come to New York when you're a free agent as opposed to coming through the organization.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Thank God I came through the organization because they had a lot of patience with me. Yeah. No, I watched your, I read the book The Captain by Eno Connor. And I've also watched the documentary on you. think what's most remarkable is how tough it was early in your career. You were young, you were thin, you didn't have your strength and power quite yet, and you developed into it. You know, I look at the late great George Steinbrenner, and now we have a different iteration, his kids. And a lot of Yankee fans are always beaten up on the Yankees. They won't go spend here, here. And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:05:14 well, they spent Derek Cole, John Carlos Stanton. They're a very good baseball team. But the fans expect more. Have they underage? achieved, or do you just think it's the Braves, the Astros, the Dodgers? They got big money. They're really good, and the world's changed. Well, I think one, you have to realize it's difficult to win. That's why people celebrate. It's hard to do. So just because you spend money and you sign players doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win a championship. I know we made it look easy for years there in New York, and it's not easy. We've had a lot of breaks that went our way as well. So, you know, look, the Yankees continue to spend money. They continue to sign players.
Starting point is 00:05:54 but ultimately it comes down to you have to have a great regular season to get to the postseason, and you have to be hot during the postseason in order to be the last team standing. And, you know, the Yankees just haven't got hot. They've gotten close, but, you know, the great thing about when you have a high payroll is you give everyone optimism. You give the fan base optimism. You give the players on the team optimism. But ultimately, you've got to perform on the field, and that's on the players. But it's very difficult to do.
Starting point is 00:06:20 You're not just going to win because you have great players on your team. So Aaron Judge is banged up. the Yankees have struggled to hit when he's out. They just got rid of the batting coach, which they don't do, the hitting coach. That's not what Brian Cashman's history is, but there was some sense of urgency. Is there a move at the trade deadline, Derek, that would make sense to you, or should we just be patient? Be patient. I mean, the patient isn't a word that you use in New York, especially when you start talking about the Yankees.
Starting point is 00:06:46 So I don't know if they're going to be patient. I can't answer that question of what their mindset is, but Yankees are struggling to score runs. Look, the pitching staff, you got Cole, you have Severino, you got Germain, you know, you got Rodon coming back, you got Cortez coming back. So the pitching is there. They just need to score some runs, especially while Aaron's out. You know, who knows when he's going to come back. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later. But they are scuffling to score a few runs here and there, and I would expect them to do something.
Starting point is 00:07:15 What that is, I think, you know, you'll know in a couple weeks, but I do expect them to do something. They don't really sit still for too long, especially when there is. In the race, look, they're only a few games back, so they still have that opportunity. So I would expect them to do something. So when I was a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s, I always felt like the National League had more good players. The Dodgers, the Reds, the Pirates, the Phillies, they just were stacked. The American League now has better players.
Starting point is 00:07:41 I couldn't tell you the last, I think it was 10 years ago, the National League won an All-Star game. Is there a reason behind it? I mean, some of it has been the Yankees payroll, that you guys had great players. but it does feel like the American League has more good players. Is that changing? Well, look, when you grew up, what did you say, the 50s and 60s? Seventy's.
Starting point is 00:08:05 So, yeah, when you grow up, yeah, I mean, look, I think sometimes we're just, the American League's on a run right now, and some things you just can't explain. Like, he asked me about success in the All-Star games, you just can't explain it. But, you know, I'm an American League, or so I hope this run continues. news. You know, Derek, they've made some changes in baseball. I never like the defensive shift because I think in basketball, you can't be in the key forever, and in hockey you can't be in the crease. So I didn't like baseball players playing in right field. I just think, I want to see, it's not fair. I just felt there was a sense it wasn't fair to hitters. And the pitchers now
Starting point is 00:08:39 are all six-five. They all throw 98. You got about four different pitchers. Let's make it easier to hit. The games now are much faster. Now, you, would, I like that as a consumer, but as a player, you know, these two-hour and 19-minute games, how does that sit with you? Well, I agree with you with the shift. I think, you know, when you talk about having the shift, can you still hear me there, Kyle? Yep, I can hear you. Yep. Hold on one sec. It may have unplugged. We get disconnected. All right. Let's plug it back in. By the way, they're watering the field, so all you guys treat them with respect. and don't, don't soak Derek Jeter as he's sitting in T-Mobile.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now, Derek? I got you now. Okay, go ahead. We're back. We're back. So what's, what I was saying was, I didn't like the shift either. I think ultimately, you know, as a baseball fan, you're used to when balls are hit hard to the right side, it's a hit, and then all of a sudden you look and you have someone wandering out there in the outfield. So I was, I was big on eliminating the shift as well. When you talk about shorter games, look, I would have loved it as a player. I mean, we, we came up when you had the Boston, New York rivalry. We're playing four and a half hour games every time.
Starting point is 00:09:55 So as a player, I would have loved to have two and a half hour games. So I think it's good for the consumer. It's good for the fans, the shorter time frame. But then also, I think the goal is to have more action in the game. So some of the rule changes, I think have been great. The reaction, the response from the fans have been great. I think it's easier to watch a game on television. So I'm actually all in favor of the changes.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Shohay Otani is, and we've said this before, is he's got Mookiee Betts' speed. He's got power, and he, if not for a blister, he could have been starting in the All-Star game. But in the Angels, Derek, he is a little bit hidden in Southern California. It's a Dodger area, right? So he could make another $100 million somewhere else, or he could be great. What is your takeaway on, I mean, you get to a point when you make $600 million or $580, I'm not sure what the difference is, but I get players want more money. if you were an agent or recommending stuff, what do you make of Otani's path going forward? Well, the difference is 20 million. It's easy for people to say there's no difference.
Starting point is 00:10:59 There's a difference. Look, I think for Otani, and you can put Trout in there as well, I think as a baseball fan, you want to see the best players on the national stage. And, you know, unfortunately for Anaheim, they haven't been in the postseason in years. Otani's never played in the postseason. Trout's played in there once. But even if you look at the WBC, I mean, the whole world was watching. Otani, he really, he was a shining star.
Starting point is 00:11:25 So you want as a baseball fan to see them in those situations, but it's unfortunate. So you say hidden, I think he's been hidden out there just because they haven't been on that stage yet. And, you know, something's going to have to change because I know players, that's what they want to do. They want to have the opportunity to play for a championship. They want to be on that stage so they can showcase their talents. And I think baseball has been missing that, you know, both Trout and Otani up into this, point. Finally, you know, it's I, when you were in the middle of New York and you were this big star, you always had an ability to not disappear among the people, but you were just people,
Starting point is 00:12:03 you were just seen as, and it's a remarkable talent, you were a star, but seen as sort of an every man. Like, like a guy would go, oh, I'd love to have a beer with Jeter. You don't say that about every player. Now you're retired and everybody in New York knows you. Do you miss sometimes though, the juice of being a Yankee and center stage, and you never leaned into it. That wasn't your juice. But God, those teams were fun. You were in the center of the universe. Do you miss a little bit of that juice?
Starting point is 00:12:34 I wouldn't, you know, look, once you're a Yankee, you're always a Yankee. You know, you walk around, people still recognize. People still want to talk to you. They still tell you, they thank you for the championship that you want. But I think the stage changes, man. My center of my universe now is at home. I got four kids under six. So look, I got a lot going on, too.
Starting point is 00:12:52 So it went from cheers to screaming and crying and yelling. So I still hear the noise. It's just a different type of noise. All right. You got the wiffle ball years coming up. Great seeing you as always. Absolute pleasure. Have fun in my hometown and continued success.
Starting point is 00:13:08 It's great to have you at Fox, Derek. I appreciate it, Colin. Thanks for having, anybody. You bet. Derek Jeter, who is four kids under six. He's living your world right now. That's a lot of movement. My wife said no to having more kids than two.
Starting point is 00:13:24 I can't imagine four under six. That means at least three kids in diapers. Oof. The diaper times, you don't remember them. Oh, yeah, I do. I changed a lot of diapers. They're not fun. Well, it's, you know.
Starting point is 00:13:37 It's more fun when they can like talk to you, have a conversation, listen, play sports. I change their diapers when they were six. They'll be changing mine when I'm 86. It all goes full circle. They will not be changing your diaper. first one you're 80s. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio,

Starting point is 00:15:58 or wherever you get your podcasts. Uh, JMAQ with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, Colin, it's funny, I heard you bring up Chris Paul to Buker earlier. Yeah, okay, I found this. You're going to love this.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Well, you might hate it. So Chris Paul, everybody expects him to come off the bench in Golden State, right? He's never not started a game since he's been in the league over 1,300 games. But this weekend, a reporter asked him about coming off the bench and listen to this pushback from your guy, Chris Paul. All right. What do you think of their depth, their bench players that you might be playing alongside? You coach him?
Starting point is 00:16:38 Okay, well, I don't know what the situation is going to be yet. You know what I mean? So I think that'll be for us to figure out once we get going. You've never come off to mention your entire career. Is that something that you'd be willing to do? Like I said, it'll be a conversation for us when camp starts or whatnot. But me and Steve have talked or whatnot. But that ain't something you'd be like, what up, man?
Starting point is 00:17:02 Where are you starting? You're coming off? You know what I mean? So I think we'll figure all that stuff out in camp. Yeah. And away we go with the drama. that was dramatic? What are you talking?
Starting point is 00:17:14 He just admitted he's not willing to take a back seat. That's basically what he said. That's not basically what he said. He said, what are you a coach? Yeah, firing back. He's like basically, I'm not conceding that he's coming off the bench. He didn't fire back. He smiled and answered diplomatically.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Colin, you're going to a dynasty. You've never won Jack Squat. Your answer should be, hey man, I'm just trying to win a title. I'm going to play whatever role they want me to. It's a great organization. I've been on four or five teams in the last. six years. I'm willing or do whatever. He's a very prideful player. Yeah. You know who else is prideful? They got who's sucker punched Jordan Bull. Oh, God. Can you let that go? No, absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:17:53 He said he's going to talk to the coaches about it. He's very respectful. I'm going to talk to them about it. Really? They're not going to tell you how it goes. I'm just saying, like you said, there's a very prideful guy. I get it. He's a Hall of Famer. He's one of the point God. Ooh, Hall of Fame. Point God. Yeah. They don't call Aaron, Court. quarterback God, and you're all googly-eisic Aaron. So just explain to me. Where is Chris Paul potentially starting? He's going to play 24 minutes a night, which is perfect.
Starting point is 00:18:22 I said starting. I don't care about minutes. Where is he starting? Steph and Chris Paul start together. Oh. And then Chris, after six minutes, first TV timeout goes, Clay's up. So Clay's coming off the bench now. Oh, wow. Okay. So we're going to rest Chris Paul and save him.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Save him for the playoffs so he doesn't get hurt like every year. Interesting. Now you're talking about starting him. How many minutes a game is he logging? 20? I said 24 minutes for Chris Paul. 33 minutes for Steph Curry. 27 minutes for Clay Thompson. And then Moses Moody and Peyton can figure out there.
Starting point is 00:18:57 To be clear for the Warriors fans, I am a Steph Curry honk. Somebody just sent me the Apple documentary of Curry. I watched half of it over the weekend. This guy's incredible. He's probably my favorite athlete ever, Steph Curry. And I just don't like anything about this Chris Paul situation, Colin. I can't believe you're right. optimistic. But let's move on to better news. Zion Williamson. Oh, geez, the Pelicans aren't
Starting point is 00:19:19 actively trying to trade him, but that doesn't mean he couldn't be moved. He is reportedly not completely off the table when it comes to trade talks. According to Chris Haynes, who is tight with the athletes, Zion could be available for the right situation and the right package. Boy, this NBA drama just does not stop ever. I got two issues. Commitment and injuries. That's hard. I'll always take an issue. You give me a couple of them. That's, that's, I got, I always say I'll live in any city with a couple of issues. You get to four or five, I wouldn't want to live there, right? Like it's the same thing with my players. Everybody, no perfect player. But you start getting a two and three issues. Is he committed? Is he into it? I got weight issues. I got, I've got. Off the court. You have to mention the off court stuff. I know nobody wants to talk about it. But you know what I like the least is just the injuries. I mean, if he's healthy, he's pretty good. But he was saying he was healthy at the end of the season. Fans are begging him. Dude, come back.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Drag us into the playoffs, please. And he's given these weird interviews. Speaking of himself in the third person, Colin. I like him. It's just... I like him, too. But let's just... Theoretical trade.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Who's interested in Zion? Boy, there's a team in the Big Apple. No, God, no. Let's not go there. Are you crazy? No, that's what the Knicks used to do. They got Julius Randall, who's like a poor man's version of Zion, except Julius plays.
Starting point is 00:20:41 I don't need... I need Zion. I got Julius Randall. I got a bully, a tough guy. I don't need Zion. We just got punk. I can say we. I'm a Knicks guy. By the heat. You'd crushed Cleveland as an underdog. It was basically Jalen Brunson against the world in that series. Nobody else helped him. No, Knicks do not get Zion. I think you have Julius Randall who has some similarities to Zion. A forward, tough, thick, do the dirty work? I like Randall. I think he's had a good run there, but you say no to Zion? Do you think there's any market for Zion?
Starting point is 00:21:10 Yes, not the Knicks. The Knicks are one smart move going from good to very good. Let's be smart. Let's not go and be desperate. But they're like a first second round team. How do you make that leap to, hey, conference finals? Carl Anthony Towns. Okay, I like that.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Yeah, Carl Anthony Towns. Now you're a very good team. Zion feels desperate. A lot of Carl Anthony Towns Portland chatter, but I don't see that. Well, he's going to be in demand, Carl Anthony Town, by the way. He's good. He's just not a number one. The Knicks have pieces.
Starting point is 00:21:41 They can move Mitchell Robinson, who's a rim defender but doesn't score. They could move a Josh Hart, a good player. They got first-round picks. So the Knicks don't need to be desperate. They've got really nice. I give you R.J. Barrett, 20 a night, Mitchell Robinson and two first-round picks. Why would I be desperate? For Nick's aren't desperate.
Starting point is 00:21:57 For Kat? I'm just saying there's no reason to be desperate. They have everything everybody wants. A lot of first-round picks. Good, not great players. Good movable pieces. RJ Barrett fits them. That's a good call.
Starting point is 00:22:08 There's small forward situation. I'm spacing now. but like Anthony Davis is the guy, it all orbits around him. I don't hate that. That's a good Carl Anthony Towns to the Knicks. That's better than the Zion Williamson stuff. Anyways, final story. Jalen Hertz led the Eagles to the Super Bowl last season,
Starting point is 00:22:24 but couldn't close it out, despite an incredible performance, with a new season around the corner and a huge contract extension on the books. Hertz says he's not content with what he's accomplished so far. That's the thrill. There's a thrill and not being satisfied, and there's a thrill and being on this journey. And I've embraced that.
Starting point is 00:22:47 And, you know, I love this game. And I know my purpose within this game. So every day I just try to be the best as I can be. You know, it is not based off of external factors. Those things don't matter. You know, you're just trying to control what you can. Yeah. Listen, Colin, I like Hertz a lot.
Starting point is 00:23:11 I'm rooting for him. I like everything about it's professional. He carries a briefcase, apparently, to the Eagles facility. Professional. He's a professional. He had one really, really good year. The year before that was his first as a starter, I know. Do we need to dial back the expectations?
Starting point is 00:23:28 I don't know. Just the taste. Just a little. No? Yeah, I mean, he's really good. He's really good. I mean, he was good at Bama. He's been good at Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:23:38 He was a little rocky early. Guess what? Some people, you know, it takes a while. Not everybody just... People always forget, Mahomes didn't have to play his first year. Yeah. It's an advantage. I mean, Lamar Jackson didn't have to plan until week 11.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Like, it helps. Jalen hurts. Just a young guy. Josh Allen, those guys all learn. I think he's pretty good. And I also think this matters a lot to me, grown up. Focused, grown up, adult, briefcase. Nothing blows up a career.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Like, that's why it's not, just don't pay every start. Can guys handle the money? Yeah. Front office sleeps well in Philadelphia. every night knowing Jalen Hertz, that's our guy. Never going to get, as a GM once told me, never going to get a phone call at 2 in the morning from a guy like Jalen Hurts.
Starting point is 00:24:25 And that's what keeps you awake at night. A 2 in the morning phone call because one of your young kids got paid and he doesn't know. I mean, the Cowboys literally had babysitters for Des Bryant. That's the stuff that keeps a GM and an owner awake at night. None of that with Jalen Hurts. That was a big thing with Baker Mayfield,
Starting point is 00:24:42 who was out here in L.A. You weren't worried about 2 in the morning, but you were, sometimes Baker would, you'd go to a Wednesday press conference and throw the medical staff under the bus and you had to deal with three days of that nonsense. It matters. That stuff matters. J-Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:24:58 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd-Lie News. No more ice-cold showers. Tankless, made-simple.com. Check it out. Navian, 15-year limited warranty. Save money on energy bills, free up valuable space.

Starting point is 00:25:52 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:26:14 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Starting point is 00:27:54 The fully electric EQS sedan from Mercedes-Benz, magnificent innovation. Feelings all Mercedes, the vehicle is all electric. Go to MbUSA.com slash EQS. Well, it's time for the magic ape ball where I shake this puppy. Jay Mack, you give me the questions, and I simply rely on the eight ball. These are not my opinions. This is just what the eight ball says. Okay.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Well, shake it up and tell us what the magic eight ball says about Patrick Mahomes, winning back-to-back MVPs. It says most likely Aaron Rogers, Peyton Manning, Brett Farve, and Joe Montana, all won back-to-backs. Mahomes, arguably better than all of them. only thing I worry about AFC's tough going to face better pass rushes better defenses but my guess is he does
Starting point is 00:28:49 the eight ball feels most likely always reliable eight ball will be Jean Robinson win offensive rookie of the year with the Falcons signs point to yes Falcons had the number three
Starting point is 00:29:03 rush offense second and rush percentage they have an underrated offensive line the franchise is clear with Arthur Smith, accumulating tight-end, wide receiver,
Starting point is 00:29:14 running back talent. They want to see if Desmond Ritter can play. I think with young quarterbacks, you make sure they, you know, young quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:29:22 need a better running game. So my takeaway is this kid's going to get a lot of carries. You worry that he's going to share the carries. With Algier, the kid who was unbelievable last year.
Starting point is 00:29:32 Next up, will Mike McCarthy call plays for the entire season? The eight ball says, ask later. He's 7, 12, and won in the last 20 games that he has been a play caller. And Rogers, not a fan of Mike McCarthy's play calling. Tended to be conservative.
Starting point is 00:29:54 So let's see. And by the way, he brought in Brian Chautenheimer, who's not exactly what you would consider a heavy risk taker. If he gives up calling plays, you might as well fire him. Next up, will Derek Carr and the Saints finish with more wins than the Raiders? The eight ball said it is certain much easier division. Josh Jacobs still under contract. I mean, let's be honest about this. Saints should go 2-0 against Tampa, could go 2-0 against Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:30:25 So some of this stuff is just look at your division. Raiders could go 0 for 6 in this division, and it would not be shocking. And we still have a Garoppolo foot injury. I don't know what's the latest on that. Next up, will Russell Wilson and the Broncos finished with more wins than the Seahawks. Don't count on it. Seahawks bring back their entire staff,
Starting point is 00:30:46 and the Seahawks face more rebuilding teams and more unproven quarterbacks in the NFC. So Denver may be better than Seattle and win fewer games, simply because of the lack of elite quarterbacks they face. Denver could be a very good team and end up with eight losses. It is all about the schedule. People need to understand that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Will at least two teams from the AFC West make the playoffs? The eight ball says, without a doubt, multiple AFC West teams have made it each of the last two seasons. Denver and the Chargers both feel like, one with a coordinator and one with the head coach, have made really big jumps in offensive coaching. The Chargers and the Broncos should be much more dynamic offensively, and that's where the game is headed. That's a tough one. All right. Will Matt Stafford finish the season as the Rams quarterback?
Starting point is 00:31:43 There are rumors they were going to move him last year or trade deadline. Signs point to yes. By the way, in the 2021 Super Bowl season, do you guys remember he threw for like 6,000 yards and 50 touchdown passes? I know there's this like recency bias thing, but McBey's a good coach. Cooper Cup is a star receiver. The O-line will be better.
Starting point is 00:32:07 they're going to beat Arizona twice. Listen, listen, if they start one in four, one in five, and they think to themselves, Stafford's getting old, we'd like to get inexpensive, remember, I know a lot of you think they're going to, let's do a soft tank, but they can't possibly be as bad as like Tampa and Arizona. They're not that, are they?
Starting point is 00:32:35 No comment. Next up, will the Patriots, signed DeAndre Hopkins this offseason. The eight ball says no. Our sources say no. Patriots don't tend to overpay for free agents. They've already signed two receivers to longer contracts. And DeAndre Hopkins reportedly has an offer from Tennessee and New England,
Starting point is 00:32:56 but he wants a better offer and he wants to play with a better quarterback. So my takeaway is DeAndre will not do the Patriot way. There's no way he's going to come in there and say, You overpaid for Devonte Parker. I'm going to take less. I'm going to take a team-friendly deal. You overpaid for that guy? You're going to overpay for me.
Starting point is 00:33:18 I get it. You got to have a little pride there. Next up, Magic 8-Ball. Will Caleb Williams be an Arizona Cardinal after this season? Aightball said, it appears to be certain. Listen, man, Kyler Murray's a $52 million cap hit in 2024. For attitude. What if he's coming off a big injury.
Starting point is 00:33:40 This one feels like, you know, like sometimes there's a team, like the Houston Texans where you're like, oh, they're not very good. And they win seven, eight games. They're like, oh, they're not terrible. And not a lot of, outside of Buda Baker, and not a lot of stars is not exactly the feisty as lineup. I wonder if he's hearing all this noise and tries to rush back from injuries saying, forget first eight weeks, no way.
Starting point is 00:34:00 I'm back by week four. Does that change the equation? Or does he say, I don't mind, trade me. Can't get worse than Arizona. I mean, seriously. That's possible, too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:10 I mean, it's not the world's worst thing if Kyler Murray gets traded out. Unless he loves the city and the franchise and his teammates. You could do that, but it's not a franchise you'd love. Fair enough. Next up. Will the Vikings miss the playoffs this season, Magic 8 Ball? Ask again later. Jordan Love, Justin Fields.
Starting point is 00:34:30 I just don't know. There's a lot about that division. I don't have any idea. I mean, I, if you told me, Jordan Love and Justin Fields end up just being okay? Well, then Minnesota could go three and one or four and all against those guys. And I mean, that division is nothing but question marks for me. Even Detroit, who we both like, is a little bit of a hype bubble here that you could see popping.
Starting point is 00:34:53 Like, I really don't know. Detroit's got the best roster. Minnesota's got the most reliably accurate chain-moving quarterback. Although I like golf better than Kurt Cousins. A lot of questions in the division. All right. And finally, because we haven't talked about them all the show, will the Jets be on hard knocks this season?
Starting point is 00:35:12 Eight Ball says, without a doubt, I mean, Washington, the Saints and the Bears are the only other teams that are eligible, and they're just not that interesting. Saints are interesting, aren't they? No. New quarterback? No. You know what?
Starting point is 00:35:23 I got to say this. So when I was in Vegas this weekend, you see a lot of professional athletes. The Raiders and Derek Carr, it was time for a change. for a lot of reasons, I'm not going to get into the personal stuff. It's... Time for a change for whom? The team was a player. Good for both.
Starting point is 00:35:48 Okay. Good for both. I think the Raiders needed something. They felt they weren't getting something, a little juice maybe. And I think Derek Carr felt disrespected. And he needed to go somewhere with a little. much more winnable division and a much better roster. Sometimes these sports divorces, it's just time.
Starting point is 00:36:15 I just, I would say, my senses with the Raiders, being in Las Vegas for the weekend, it was time for both parties. No reason to bad mouth the other. It was time. Hearing you talk about the Raiders, I just, you know, we did Caleb Williams a moment ago. For the league, do you think he'd be a better fit in Arizona or the, the Raiders for the NFL. Oh, the Raiders.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Yeah. Yeah. But I do think Tampa, Tampa's a really interesting team if they're bad early. Because they have some really good players. And I could see teams going, we'll take your players. They've got some, if you got any cap room at all, that's why a lot of these teams may be saving the powder here.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Yes, that's a great point. Evans and Godwin probably have higher value than DeAndre Hopkins.
