So I'll start with this. Do you think in the retirement there was a Payton Link maybe or a Miami thought? Or do you think it's a clean? I'm done. It's been good. More time with family. What do you make of it? I think it's a clean break from football.

Colin, the only place that I think at the end made sense for Tom Brady was Tampa because he knew that if he went to San Francisco or he went to Las Vegas or he went to some other place, you know, it would be moving his family. Yeah. And we saw what happened last year when his family was disrupted. You know, it ended, however it ended, and I don't know how it ended, but it ended in a divorce. And, you know, I'm sure that Tom Brady was thinking an awful lot about his children in this particular case. And so I think he also, and he also thought, listen, you know, I've put myself number one for all these years. I need to put somebody else number one. Not that he would have played again.

I was reminded this morning, somebody sent me a text and said, remember, when Tom Brady was 29, you wrote a story quoting him. him saying he wanted to play till he was 45. Yeah. Well, he did. And that's absolutely right. I wrote in Sports Illustrated, quoted Brady, that he wanted to play to 45, and so he did. Yeah. There's always a ripple effect with this stuff when a legend retires.

I projected this morning, I said, if you're Green Bay in the last 72 hours, San Francisco is a mess at quarterback and Brady retires. and I'm thinking, Mark Gugendon's, the guy running the Packers, is he thinking, you know, maybe we should call Aaron Rogers back. Sean Payton's not coming to the NFC. He's going to the AFC.

The ripple effect of Brady. Maybe I should just ask you straight out. I think I would sleep on moving off Aaron Rogers this morning. And by the way, if Philadelphia wins Peter, as you know, everybody wants to get paid. They've got a bunch of free agents, a couple of linemen close to retirement. They've got to pay Jalen Hertz.

They may not be the same roster in 350 days. What do you think comes to the Green Bay situation? Do you think there's a little ripple looking and thinking, maybe we should keep Aaron for one more year? Well, I think the one thing that the coaching staff and the general manager, Brian Gutikin, feel right now, is that this is, over, but we do need to investigate our options.

Because at some point, and some point probably very soon, we're going to have to start life without Aaron Rogers. And we think, we think, we don't know. It's amazing, really, when you think of it, Colin, how similar this is to 208 when the Packers felt good about Aaron Rogers succeeding Brett Farve, but they didn't know. and I think it's the same way right now. They feel good about Jordan Love, but they don't know. And that's why, you know, if you are the Packers,

you have to be thinking, should we make it one more year at a humongous cost for our team? Should we make it one more year or should we try to cut the cord right now? Yeah. I want to go to Sean Payton. Listen, they won five games last year, with a coach that was completely overwhelmed, and they won five games. And so Sean Payton taking over this pretty talented roster, getting to 10 doesn't seem extraordinary. McVeigh went from four wins to like 11, Andy Reid, two to 11 in Kansas City in one year. Brian Daibel, the Giants were a joke a year ago. He got him to a playoff win.

The Jags were the worst team in football. Doug Peterson got him to win a playoff game. So if you get the right offensive coach, you can really do some magical things here in a pretty short period of time. So anybody that says, you know, Denver lost three overtime games, Peter, that's almost unprecedented. They lost nine, one score games. They played the Chiefs close with incompetency at head coach. I think it's going to work. I mean, at some level, kind of quickly, do you?

Well, I think it has a better than 50-50 chance of working because I would trust Sean Peyton with Russell Wilson. now there's a lot to address there. It's clear that Russell Wilson had a lot of privileges inside that organization. Yeah. And I think Sean Payton basically is going to eliminate those. And Sean Payton would not have taken this job if he felt like it was going to be 44 guys plus one poobah in Russell Wilson. Yeah.

So my feeling is that it is going to work in college. and this is the one thing I heard that I really trust. Heard this about a week ago, that Russell Wilson very much wanted Sean Payton. Yeah. Because he knows that the house is on fire and he's got to find some way to put the fire out. Who was out there who could have put the fire out?

That's why when I see all these reports about Domeko Ryan's, not that Domeco Ryans wouldn't have been a good head coach, But how does that solve Russell Wilson? Yeah. And, you know, there is an emergency in Denver. Yeah. They need to fix the quarterback or else however much they're paying Sean Payton isn't going to be worth it.

Yeah, I had dinner with Sean a couple weeks ago, and he, I mean, he said to me, he goes, I love the ownership. He goes, I really like the roster. He said, you know, the problems aren't as extreme as you think, but he did acknowledge there's disconnect between perhaps Russell and some of the players. And he goes, we'll solve that. We can solve that. But, you know, the coaching situation, when you look around the National Football League right now, you know, I was talking about Brady's career early. Let's pivot back to Tom. He entered the NFL where defense wins championships. And now everybody says today, what's a fullback? What's amazing about Tom is

literally the league feels different. He came into the league. They were promoting violent hits. Now it's totally an offensive league. And the center of the field is offense. Forget all the goat talk. But is there something about Tom? When did you, Peter King, realize that he wasn't just really good?

When did you all these years start hearing things or seeing things? For a long time, people said, system quarterback. When was the epiphany or moment for you that it was like, nah, it's not system. He is the system. It is, you know, Colin, after his second year that they won the Super Bowl, I remember I was at Sports Illustrated. We had nominations for Sportsman of the year. And I pushed Tom Brady. The reason I did is because that year he told Scott Piole, the cap guy, the personnel guy,

listen, I'll take less money if you promise that as long as I, here you spend to the cap. And Pioli and Belichick agreed, so he took less money. And Colin, I don't mean to make this a non-football thing, but the way you achieve long-term consistent greatness is not only the greatness of some players, it is the buy-in of all players. And when everybody in that organization saw Tom Brady as the 18th highest paid quarterback, which two Super Bowl rings, they're saying, ah, okay, we see, and I don't know what number he was. But he said, ah, we see it now. We see it. The guy does not want to be the pig at the trough and take every last dime, which he could do. And I will never forget how the Patriots then

went out. And that's how you get a bunch of Cory Dillans and good players who can contribute to a hole. It wasn't just the football, Colin. It was everything else. It was, hey, listen, look and see the salary numbers at every position and look and see the quarterback's salary numbers. I will never be number one. And general managers, cap guys could use that over the years with players saying, if you want to come here, you might not get the most money. So if you want to make the most money, go to Carolina or go to wherever it is. And nothing against guys who want to make the most money. This is the United States of America. But Tom Brady always believed that, hey, I'll make it up some other way. I just want to make sure that my left guard is the best left guard that I can get

in the National Football League and not lose them because I'm taking too much of the pie. For the record, the Niners quarterback situation this morning. So now Brock Purdy apparently won't be part of the offseason workout. I've never seen anything like it. Garofalo, Trey Lance, Josh Johnson, Brock Purdy. It's insane. I think there's an argument to be made that you just go with Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, get them healthy, and the roster's good enough. You can keep all the guys you want to.

That's my guess on what they do. I did think the Brady thing was worth consideration. but my guess is they bring the kids back. Yeah. Do you think that too? Yeah, I think so, but I think they're going to try to do better than Josh Johnson for a number three. Yeah. It's very simple, Colin.

Kyle Shanahan has coached this team for six years, and it's like there's a voodoo doll somewhere at the quarterback position for this team. No team has had as much injury problem at the quarterback position in the last six years. as the San Francisco 49ers have. And so I think it's incumbent on them, even though most teams say, well, we got to invest in our backup quarterback. If I'm John Lynch, if I'm Adam Peters, personnel guy there, what I'm saying right now is we are going to get a good number two guy to be our number three,

even if we have to pay them more than we want to. We need to ensure that we don't go into, a situation, you know, in 2023 like we had in 2022, because obviously, as soon as Josh Johnson went in the game, the game was over. Yeah. I was going to ask, because the Pro Bowl's this weekend, I don't know if you were aware. I know you're going to carve out a lot of time. I think they should get rid of it. I think it's stupid.

I don't like it. It's stupid. I don't like the Pro Bowl. So it's set for this weekend in Vegas. Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen. They're not going to play. Okay, obviously. Who are the quarterbacks in this mess?

Well, who is it? Derek Carr. Well, that's fine. I don't even want to mention. Who's your one? It's not Lamar Jackson, but his backup is going to the Pro Bowl. What? Huntley.

Yeah. In the Pro Bowl? He had two touchdown passes this season. The players don't want to play in this game. Get rid of it. It's the only All-Star game I like is the baseball one. The rest of it's nonsense. NBA All-Star game is fun.

It's most of the... Come on. 119 to 198. It's exciting. You have best players scoring. At any rate, here's what Derek Carr said about going to the Pro Bowl. He's stoked. Well, maybe this invitation got lost in the mail from past seasons,

but I'm going back to Pro Bowl number four. See you soon, Vegas. I'm really, I am genuinely excited to see where he goes. Well, here's my thing. You know how NBA players recruit one another in the off season? You think he's going there to try to get players. Oh, good. say, hey, Derek, we could use you.

I'll tell you this. I'll tell you where I would go if I was Derek Carr, Carolina. That division is... I don't know if they have any pro-bo. No, no, I mean, they've got a star number one receiver. They've got an offensive coach. They have a good defense. That division is brutal.

He will be easily the best quarterback in that division. You also have, if you look around that division, it's... There are no franchise quarterbacks. If Derek Carr... What does Derek Carr want? When you go to another place, you usually want two things you never had. Well, you go to Carolina, get a defense, and a real shot of winning your division regularly. But don't you think quality of life matters?

What's wrong with Charlotte? Well, wait a minute. Carr has spent most of his career on the West Coast or Vegas. What if he just doesn't want to go east? He's got a lot of family here. He might be a family guy. You're from Hoboken or something. I am absolutely not from Hoboken.

But again, you know, I was, I grew up in Northern Virginia. I was born in New York City. I was recruited at a time by that company that you had left in the Northeast. And that's a tough sell to go there. When somebody says, hey, do you want to come to L.A.? You did. And work. That's an easy sell.

Like if you're Derek Carr and New York comes calling with Brian Dable, are you going to New York or Charlotte? Charlotte. I got to face Philadelphia, that roster twice. So you're going away from quality. of life. I think you can bucket into football. Time out. What's wrong with Charlotte? Nothing's wrong with Charlott. So it's a beautiful town to retire in. I don't know about a 29. Is he single? Is he married? I'm sure he's married a bunch of kids. Hey, Charlotte. Uncle Colin, respect. I like Charlotte as well.

I'm sure it's a lovely city. That division, he's going to walk in and be head and shoulders above the division and arguably have the best defense. I'd go there in two seconds. Two seconds I'd go there. If he goes to Carolina You'll bet them to win the division You won't? That's not a terrible bet You go to New York You got an aggressive

Like everything that Murdox owned, Fox Entertainment, Searchlight. They had this small, everything they did work. So my thing was, FS won't have work eventually. It's going to take three or four years. But it's what you make of it. Like, they're going to do their thing. What Derek Carr makes of it. If you go to that division, I mean, one of the reasons Sean Payton taking that job in Denver,

everybody goes, whoa, is because it's hard to win there. You're going to be an overwhelming favor to win the division tomorrow if Derek Carr goes. You've got to take jobs where you can succeed. Now, every new job is hard, and you should challenge yourself. If a job isn't hard, then you don't trust yourself. It's not easy because they've got a losing culture, and the roster needs help on the O line. But I think, if I'm Derek Carr, Frank Reich, that defense, that lousy division, I'm there tomorrow. and a beautiful city.

Beautiful people. What about Houston? Oh, God. Take Tomiko Ryans. Come on. Defensive coach, wacko owner? Awful. You throw on Nico Collins and Brandon Cooks?

God, it's a terrible quarterback's face. Next up, to a ton of my lower. Listen, he had a good run this season until it all fell apart. The concussions obviously didn't help. It missed five games due to concussion protocol. But according to Ian Rappaport, this is just in the last hour, Tua has cleared protocol

after meeting with several medical professors. Just in the last hour? I mean, maybe it was two hours ago. I don't know. Whatever. It was just this morning. He has officially cleared compression protocol. Concussion protocol. He'll be 100% when the time comes for football in September. Let me ask you, so it took five, six weeks to clear concussion protocol? I mean, I think he had three concussions. I know, that's serious. We got guys playing 10 days later. That's serious. Boy, that's a pause for me.

That's, I, yeah, I mean, I, we could run back the tape after the first one happened. I think it was the Buffalo game and then Cincinnati back to back. And I said, the neurologist that I talked to, not that I talked to a lot, but I happen to be friends with a couple through my kids in sports. They said they would sit him for the rest of the season. Wow. That was after back to back, the Buffalo Cincinnati. and Tua went and played again and, you know, we know what happened. Well, once the fencing incident when you saw his hands, it was just, when you see stuff like that,

it's terrifying. No, he did come back and have a great five-game stretch. No, he did. But, wow. Well, here's the good news. They're taking it seriously. Five, six weeks means we got, we got, this is not being just kind of moved past or. I do wonder, how seriously do you have to look at upgrading the backup quarterback situation in Miami,

given what happened to him. Because it was Teddy Bridgewater and Skyler Thompson. Yes. Could you make a run at an Andy Dalton? Well, I don't think that's the answer for anything. Ryan Tannehill, would you bring him back to the franchise he was there before? Yeah, but it's too expensive. Tannahill's wildly expensive.

Just give me somebody that, because I think Teddy's had some injuries. Major injuries. And Skylar Thompson ain't the dude. No, I don't think that's the answer. Final story, everybody's favorite quarterback in New York. Daniel Jones, career year under Brian Dable. And now he will look to secure a contract extension in the offseason. Eli Manning is proud of his former teammate, hopeful.

Jones will stay with New York for the long haul. Here's Eli Manning. Just the way he played the fourth quarter of a number of games, leading the team back to victory, which was awesome. That's what you want from your QB. To do it so quickly with a brand new offense, the way they were able to compete, make it to the playoffs, win them. playoff game. I hope he gets rewarded. I hope he's the quarterback for the Giants for a really

long time. Now, Colin, I'm tired to be a negative on that story. I don't think it's negative. No, I'm being negative. I'm tired of being negative. I need to note, one of the franchise tags, according to the notes here, is $32.4 million. I see you rolling your eyes. For Daniel Jones. That's a lot of money. What do you think? What do you think? 30 million? You lowball him? You're probably going to lose him. Maybe Frank Reich saw something. Why are you laughing? I'm not going to be negative anymore. Andy Reed one year in Kansas City. Four wins to 11 or whatever it was, Sean McVeigh. Brian Dable, mess to the playoffs. Doug Peterson, mess to the playoffs. So I guessed, the staff. As my witness, I guess the over under on the Broncos, and I said eight and a half, if you today, as a gambling expert, it feels like if I look at recent precedent, that nine feels like the spot for me on that. Yeah, nine will probably be the number. It's interesting because isn't this the same situation kind of that he ran away.

Trump-Patn ran away from in New Orleans, but he left New Orleans, really no cap room and aging quarterback who we don't know how much Russell, Wilson really has left. The Broncos essentially gave a what three number ones and three number twos to bring in Russell Wilson who we don't know how much he has left and Sean Payton. It's interesting because you're in a division now with the chiefs. You're in a division with the Chargers. The Raiders were a toss-up tight team like we sure this is absolutely going to be a quick turnaround. I feel it's going to work, Bear, but I don't know if it's going to work in the Mahomes class. But I do feel it works. I would bet the over.

I think it's a nine feels like the number. Well, it's got to be better than it was this year. I mean, this year was about as dysfunctional and competent of a situation that you ever could have been in, and they still wound up on the losing end of so many close games. So, yes, I agree, it will be better on that front, but at the same time, that division is so good. I don't think it's going to be going from whatever they were this floor

and whatever to 11 or 12 right away, but there clearly will be a direction, and they'll be more organized than they were this past year. What did you make of the initial, Super Bowl line and the action on it. Is Jeremy Sneed going to be okay? Is Gay going to be okay? The receiver is like the injury questions of the Chiefs, I think that was the impetus for the move. And I think as the injury news comes out, it might give people an opportunity to get the Chiefs back at a better number than they initially were as well. I thought he had no touch on deep poles. It was interesting. Like, I don't like betting against Patrick McCollum. So I think as the injury news comes out, I think you might see that line come back to maybe more along the lines of maybe Philly minus one, maybe a pick. If we get good news about you just with Schuster and some of the other receivers. Over under 50 and a half. half, you're feeling. I think it's a higher scoring game than what we've seen. Yeah, I know the

Eagles defensive line has a chance to really dominate that game, but I think they're going to need to be points to win this game. And I think the Chiefs can get some big plays if those receivers are healthy. And we just mentioned Jaylen with a touch on the, on the deep throw. It's like you would assume that he's going to be healthier. They had big play opportunities against the 49ers. They hit one or two, what, 50 and I have? That's a 27, 24 type game. It doesn't seem very unrealistic to reach. Tom Brady's retirement, how did it land for you? I was a little bit surprised.

I thought he was going to be coming back for sure. If he decided last year I'm retiring and then coming back and then we know everything that happened in the offseason, I thought for sure he would be back next year. Because I thought he played pretty well in a situation where he didn't have a ton of weapons and he had a coaching staff that obviously he had issues with. I thought there was a chance whether it would be Vegas or whether it would be San Francisco. Maybe it would be in Tampa with a new coach and a new coordinator. He just seemed like one of those guys who he's kind of addicted to football and it's his life now.

Why would he retire now? But God bless him. I can remember being at a Michigan-Michigan State game in 98. Remember when Lloyd Carr in Michigan they had Chad Henney, not Chad Henney, Drew Henson. Dahlia Hood recruit, and it kind of played quarterback roulette there and put Henson in the game, maybe some unopportune times. And I think it's funny how Tom Brady had that, like, slight back then, even though he was clearly the guy that I think Michigan should have gone with that year.

But he had an unbelievable career, and he's clearly transcendent into the actual, he's bigger than sports. And I think he hope he has a wonderful future moving forward. Yeah, my prediction is, Tom, people who have almost an obsessive nature in any industry, that retire usually give themselves 15 to 18 months to exhale. That's my prediction. I'm probably wrong. He will.

College football, a sport we both dearly love, in my opinion, got very regional for about 10 years. I love the SEC, but there's limits. I feel like it's expanding. I feel like the PAC 12 feels more dynamic. Your thought. And that was the thing that we had heard at my former employer and the college football playoff every year.

do we want to see Alabama, Clemson every year? Do we want to see Clemson, Georgia? That's what it felt like we were going. Not saying we and John, that's what we wanted, but that's what fans were saying. That's what it's going to be. But now you saw USC, for example, this year. They were not the fourth best team in the country. That was probably the least talented team that Lincoln Riley is going to have at SC.

And if they beat Utah, they were in the playoff. Whether you thought they were the fourth best team or not, they were going to be in. Now with Caleb coming back and the transfer. portal guys that he's brought in the recruiting. It's only going to get better. You're right. They're good Dan Latting, the job he's going to do with Oregon. They're going to be a player moving forward.

Chip Kelly's got some players at UCLA. They were in the top 10 as well. They are back. And again, now you're talking about teams going to be moving from the PAC 12 to the Big 10. But I think we are seeing going from that southeast Alabama, Georgia Clemson, Ohio State clearly is there now. And I think I see in those teams in the PAC 12, even the ones that are going to be moving to the SEC or the SEC, not the SEC, but the Big Ten.

I'm thinking of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. But you're right. It's not just a regional dominant sport anymore. Chris the Bear Felica, as good a person as that place ESPN has, and now he is over at Fox, and we love him, sports, gambling, all platforms, podcasting TV, writing the Belmont World Cup football. Okay, I don't know if there's a line on it.
