This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1.
Jason McIntyre is joining me.
I wanted to talk about this for a second because sometimes people, men especially,
because of the testosterone and our egos, you'll do something within a group of men you would never do on your own.
You know, you're with a bunch of guys.
does something stupid. Everybody starts laughing.
And you look, it's like the movie, Hangover.
You're not going to go do that by yourself.
You start drinking with guys. You're in Vegas.
And all of a sudden, you do really, you do something and you regret it.
Not me. I've never done anything I regret it.
But they always say, choose your friends wisely.
Because sometimes we can all be influenced by the crowd.
We're around.
Right?
Everybody gets a lot of courage with a couple of cocktails and a tough buddy behind them.
Liquid courage.
Yeah.
So be careful about it.
And it was interesting.
So OBJ, nobody wanted him.
Bills went and got Cole Beasley, Cowboys got T.Y Hilton.
And there was a moment.
So LeBron James has this show.
He and Maverick Carter.
I know Maverick pretty well.
Great guy.
It's called The Shop.
And it's sort of, I think they do it like once a month maybe.
I've seen clips of it.
And when everybody's in the shop, it's kind of loose and everybody's cool and
indifferent.
And that's just kind of the vibe of the show.
It's kind of cool guys sitting around.
barber shoppy kind of just shooting the bull all kind of cool telling you their thoughts and they
get OBJ on it and OBJ can get my belief gets kind of caught up in the moment do we have the tape
and he says we do we have it yet we have it here's what he says I haven't made the decision and
for me it's like I would like I would like to be in a stable environment get up 6 a.m. leave at 6 p.m.
for four weeks and then let's talk about it.
I've played football for a long time.
Like, I'm not saying that I couldn't step in and play regular season, but I don't see the point.
I really don't.
Like, I would rather play when that pressure is on.
I'd rather play when the lights is on.
That didn't play well in the league.
This is not the NBA.
You've got to play in the regular season.
Like, you're not young OBJ without injuries.
You're old, and these have been significant injuries, not like one or two.
He's like he's now on multiple significant injuries.
And it was like in the moment he gets caught up with it saying, you know, I don't want to play in the regular season.
That's not the NFL.
That's not the NFL.
You got to play in the regular season.
Tom Brady and Aaron Donald, when they're healthy, playing the regular season.
So that sounded like, one of the reasons we liked OBJ with the Rams because he fit into the culture.
He was, you know, he was humble and grateful.
And he's like, hey, man, I just want to be part of a team.
I want to be part of a collective.
That's very likable.
this sounds like old OBJ like I want special treatment it's like dude you're not that Justin Jefferson
Stefan Diggs Devante Adams you know those guys came to you in week 17 and said I don't want to play
I want to save it for the playoffs and you had it wrapped up and be like okay I mean Justin Jefferson came up to you
and said we already got a playoff game we're already hosting it and my hammies a little tight dude
take the week off Justin Jefferson's impossible to guard OBJ now is old brittle and I just thought in that
moment he got he got caught up on the shop and kind of being indifferent and I'm like people heard
that and I think it was a turnoff I mean it's listen I love the NBA we both love the NBA but it is
ridiculous the Kauai Leonard situation is ridiculous you could not do that in pro football and I do
think it turns fans off is that one of the reasons we love football is they play in the wind the rain
the cold they play hurt they're there you start you start going hey man I just don't feel kind of
like regular season games.
Dude, that's special treatment.
Like, everybody in this league is playing hurt from week three on.
Everybody.
Nobody is playing 100%.
Nobody.
And so I just thought that was a bad moment.
It's one of those, maybe he wouldn't take it back.
But I think when you say something and it's out there,
and I think people in the NFL looked at that and thought, dude, that's not where you're at.
How do you sell that to the other 53 guys on the roster?
Hey, I'm good for the regular season.
You guys get in the trenches.
handle it, I'll just show up in the playoffs. This isn't the NBA. You're right. NBA locker
room, hey, you could skip some games, 82 games. You can't do that in the NFL. You can't.
Unless you're like Philly and you're running away from the, you know, your division and your six
games up or whatever they are. Then maybe in week 17, A.J. Brown comes up and says,
hey man, my knee is sore. I'm going to take week 17 off. Dude, do it. That, that's totally
different. That guy's a star. He's in his prime. He's available. He's carried you to a different level.
I just didn't love. I mean, it's not the. I mean, it's not the same. I'm not.
the end of the world. Objay's fine, not a bad guy. I just, I didn't think this was a great,
that was a great moment for him. He could still latch on somewhere if there's an injury and you
need a number three receiver. Maybe he latches on, but it does seem unlikely now that anybody's
going to watch. The other thing I was thinking about when I watched Kyler Murray get hurt last night.
It's interesting. So I was, I was late to work by about 10 minutes this morning. Usually I get here
at about 6. And I got here at about 610, so I heard the first 7 or 8 minutes of Dan Patrick's
show. And he was talking about this. And it is interesting.
is that Cam Newton was run around, took some shots.
His style was very dynamic.
He's out of the league.
Like he was done at like 32.
Russell Wilson, runaround guy, literally fell off a cliff.
Lamar runaround guy is regressed.
And Kyler, now, nobody hit him.
But Kyler, about a year ago, decided I don't want to take any hits.
And it was interesting.
Dan talked about this.
And this style is dynamic.
And like Jalen Hertz could win the MVP.
but Jalen Hurtch is also a great thrower.
But size does matter.
Like Tua, who's a smaller quarterback, is getting banged up.
And Kyler's a little smaller quarterback.
He's getting banged up.
And Russell Wilson has age really, really fast.
So it's not that I don't want my quarterback to have some dynamic.
I think it's great.
And I've always said, you know, in this day and age,
it does feel like if you have a goff or a Kirk Cousins,
I feel like there's like 20 plays I can't run that other guys that move.
Like Josh Allen literally has a different playbook than all but about three guys in the league.
I can do anything with Josh Allen, anything.
And the same thing with Lamar Jackson.
I can run stuff that Jared Goff can't run.
So I like my quarterback to be able to move.
I'm a big fan of that.
But it was interesting listening to another host and thinking it is kind of a, the Russell,
thing is crazy because we've,
Russell was known as run around Russell, make a play Russell.
He has literally off a cliff.
And again, it can be, it may be coaching.
Some of it's coaching.
It may be a bad online, some of it.
But is he just, he ran around so many times, took so many shots,
you age really fast.
Is it possibly, I don't know, I'm throwing it out there.
I've said this.
This is what.
worries me, Big Ben ran around a lot. He aged pretty quickly. Cam ran around, took shots,
aged quickly. That's the thing that worries me about Josh Allen. Josh Allen this weekend twice.
Once I watched it and then I saw highlights. Running, leaping over people, he's six,
slamming to the turf. And I'm like, you can't do that 60 times a year. That's just,
you're not going to laugh. Like if they don't get a run game for Josh Allen, he is going to
age overnight.
Because I saw Ben.
I mean, Ben was 37 and you're like, whoa, Brady is 45.
And, I mean, it looks like if you put him with the Niners the next two years, he'd be
fine.
So I don't know.
When you watch that injury, though, you want your quarterback to move, right?
You need a mobile quarterback.
But most of our life, the thing about, I would say this, most of our lives, we all
know, you have to win from the pocket.
Greg Gosell always says that.
You eventually have to win from the pocket.
Big Ben could make throws eventually from the pocket, and that's why I want a Super Bowl, right?
You have to do it.
And you do want some ability to move around.
But the one thing we talked ourselves into is that there is this sense now, like size,
you know, it doesn't really matter.
And it's like, we've got to be careful.
Because if you go look at the great Super Bowl, the last 30 years, 5, 10 and a half,
Tua admitted
he went to a press conference
Tua admitted there are certain
I can't see receivers on certain throws
right? Yeah.
So I think what happened is
Russell Wilson came into the league
and then he got Johnny Mansell drafted,
got Baker drafted, got Kyler drafted.
I do think ideally
Caleb Williams at USC is
6 1 and a half
and I think that's kind of
that's kind of 6 1.5, 62.
Bryce Young probably not quite 6.
Well, that's what worries me.
And Bryce is also very thin.
I mean, I think he's like 194 and 6-1, and he's really talented.
But I do think sometimes because Russell Wilson came in and was so great, we talk ourselves into size doesn't matter.
You see how hard Josh Allen's getting hit?
I mean, you stand next to these NFL guys.
I've been my whole career, I've been around football players.
these guys are
when they when football players retire
they often lose 60 pounds
they're still significantly bigger than anybody
in my social circle like mark slareth lost
he was 3 30 he lost 55 pounds
mark slareth you stand next to him is still
compared to the average person huge
gigantic and so you know
the kinder thing before this injury
and this was obviously last night was a no contact injury
we all watched the game right
but that playoff game, he didn't want to get hit.
And this year, he's regressed.
It doesn't look like he wants to run as much.
Russell Wilson doesn't appear he wants to run as much.
Russell Wilson, for many years in Seattle, avoided the hit.
Remember he had that thing where he would play 16 games every year.
Then last year he had the finger, now the concussion.
He almost looks confused in the pocket.
Like he's sitting there, do I want to run?
Do I want to break this off?
And maybe his body is starting to tell him,
don't run as much.
Right.
You know, he took a really bad age.
Well, he also, he put some weight on.
Did that add a little bit?
Yeah.
He's got to get on the TB 12 regimen in the offseason.
Well, no, I think some of it is, and I think it's smart.
I think Jalen Hertz is smart.
Jalen Hertz put on about 15, 20 pounds of muscle.
Lamar Jackson figured it out.
Lamar put on weight.
All it takes about a year of getting hit by safeties, and they're about 228 and
they put their helmet in your ribs, it doesn't take long to figure out.
I've got to put 20 pounds on.
I have been in the weight room.
Lamar put weight on.
I credit him for it. Jalen Hertz did.
Russell now is heavier than he ever was.
It's no fun to get hit.
It is no fun to get hit in this league.
Even big guys. I mean,
Drew Bledso, a friend of mine,
I've known Drew for a long time.
He came to a little wine store thing
years ago in Connecticut.
Drew's hands are big, his head is big, his shoulders
big, and Drew's been out of football forever.
And Drew looks slender.
Drew got knocked out on the sideline.
hit against the Jets, yeah. Drew Bledsoe 6-6 and like 240, knocked out. I mean, it's, it's, I just, I guess I think I'm
looking right now and I'm looking around the league and I'm like, okay, I like mobility to a point.
It's okay if you're small, er, to a point. And I think it's, we all watch this stuff and I wonder
if GMs are thinking the same thing. Yeah, Patrick Mahomes seems to be the prototype. He doesn't take many
hits, although in that playoff game against Cleveland, he got, I think, wobbled.
But now, Patrick's what, six, two and a half, two-twenty?
He's smart and he's quick.
He knows when to get rid of the ball, get out of bounds.
He doesn't take too many big hits.
Like, Josh Allen is getting helicoptered.
A lot. Every third week, it feels like.
Oh, yeah. That's not sustainable. And I was telling you, Joe Burrow earlier this year
seemed to be running a lot, and I didn't like where that was going.
But it seems like he's another guy.
Smart, gets down in time.
Josh Allen takes way too many hits.
Way too many hits.
And again, when you're as big as him, he ran over every high schooler.
He ran over every college guy.
And he can jump over linebackers.
So I understand where Cam, I remember watching Cam Newton in college.
And he's, I mean, he was insane.
He was running over defensive ends.
So it's easy for me to say, dude, slide.
But Cam's like six, six, he's too fit.
He's like, slide.
I'm going to run the eye over.
But and Big Ben did this.
Big Ben, like initiated contact.
So it's hard to tell a huge athlete, hey, dude,
slide because you're so used to high school in college and even that first year of the NFL
you're like I'm bulletproof but man cam age fast Ben age fast I really think I as big as Josh
Allen is I watched that Jets game and he he ran for a first down it was like third and 15 yeah he got
the first I remember the first and I'm like you can't be doing that like you got to get out of
that stuff I know he doesn't want to slide you can't yeah yeah it's like as my my pickup basketball
game ages. I rarely drive to the hoop anymore because I don't need the contact with the big guys.
You shoot Jays. I got a, remember I got the black eye this summer? Well, you are a little bit of a
ball hog, though. I've been told you. Stop it. I'm a great shooter is what I am. I'm not going to
take many people off the dribble. But yeah, I don't want to go in and take the contact in the lane and get
clobbered. Come on. Who needs that? Kyler Murray, ACL out for the rest of the season. And as you
have talked about earlier, that is an injury. That is, he's not going to be ready to go by Labor Day
next year. I don't even think he's going to see the field. I would say November at the earliest.
Remember, what is his strength, Colin? Evading the rush, getting out of the pocket and making things
happen. You're not doing that off an ACL. O'Dell had the ACL in February at the Super Bowl, right?
He said he couldn't even play regular season games. That was December. So I think Kyler
Murray, probably out until Thanksgiving next year. Arizona's going to have to make a move of quarter.
You can't roll into the season with Colt McCoy as your starter. You need to draft somebody.
You're probably right.
Yeah, no, I mean, you're right.
I don't know where you go, but I think you're probably right.
We all have different ideas about success, different times.
We achieve it different ways, obviously.
Let's say you've changed jobs.
You got a little pay raise.
What do you do with that extra lettuce?
Spend it.
Well, or put it away.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jett.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because.
of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Tomorrow, the FIFA World Cup semi-finals continue on Fox as Killion Mbapé and reigning champs, France,
look to end Morocco's magical run and book their shot at back-to-back titles.
The World Cup semis coverage begins tomorrow at 1 p.m. Eastern Live on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
Do we have a single United States men's national team player that has a 40-inch vertical?
Because when you show that highlight, that is elite global.
athleticism. We've got a bunch of good players.
Haji Wright can get up, I'm told.
Okay. Okay. Because when you
watch that, that looks
like
our great athletes in our great sports
doing it. That is remarkable.
That's the best goal I think
at the tournament. That's incredible.
It's up there. I don't know about the best.
You guys don't think it is? That guy had, that's a
40 inch vertical in the box. That is
incredible. Yeah.
Pulisic
better start doing lunges.
Box jumps with Sanchez and McIntyre.
Yeah, okay, here.
Jay Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So the Dallas Cowboys were one of the teams
supposedly interested in signing Odell.
Becker member, Micah Parsons, was heavily recruiting him,
but instead they go for T.Y. Hilton,
signing a one-year deal.
Jerry Jones said that the Hilton News
does not mean that they've completely moved on from Odell.
According to Fox Bet,
Cowboys are still the favorite to sign O'Dell at minus 150.
I saw some numbers.
Like, there's not a lot of money here for T.Y. Hilton.
This is basically, hey, you're an insurance policy.
How old is T.Y. Hilton?
He's not that old.
He just deteriorated kind of quickly.
He had a lot of injuries.
I don't know, Colin.
You think Cowboys still have a shot at O'Dell Beckham?
Well, I always thought it was the best fit,
but I will say this.
If he can't play this year,
then I would just go draft another wide receiver.
And when I watch the Cowboys,
It's not like offense is their issue.
It's just I thought he would be a little juice.
But, I mean, the sport now gives us 25 wide receivers a year college to pro.
So if he could help me now in the playoffs, but if he says I'm not going to play, you know,
if he's not healthy now, I'll just go draft a receiver.
To me.
I don't know.
Odell, feels like that ship has sailed.
All right, moving on, the Giants and Commanders.
Ooh, huge Sunday night football matchup.
It's going to be like watching paint dry.
The last time they met it was a tie game at 20, Colin.
playoff spot basically hanging in the balance.
Giants left tackle, Andrew Thomas said they know what's on the line this weekend.
Ron Rivera said Washington's fired up for the rematch.
Who you got?
Taylor Heineke or Danny Loose Change?
Well, the number four and a half is one of those middle numbers telling you Washington's going to win,
but I tend to think in divisional games it's close.
Although this weekend I took Cleveland against Cincinnati and they didn't cover.
One of those two teams is good.
I don't.
This is a hard watch.
I mean, the commanders are playing better football, so they should win the game.
It's just a number.
It's hard for me in divisional games with a limited offense to give up.
I think the commanders probably win the game.
Chase Young is going to be back to Washington.
I don't know how Giants are going to run on this Washington defense.
It's going to have to be Daniel Jones winning through the air, and I never trust him.
Give me the commanders to win this one.
I like them in the playoffs.
Heineke, man, makes place.
You don't like him.
You're not a fan.
I think he's less talented than Burr.
Brock Purdy. I would agree with that sentiment, yes. Final story. Let's go back to soccer.
Gio Raina of the men's national team stayed in the headlines. This is, I think, two straight
days we've talked about the U.S. national soccer team in Gio Raina. Even though they were eliminated
from the cup, Raina's grabbing headlines. Reports of his lack of effort is the reason his role
was limited in Qatar. He responded on Instagram, saying in part, just before the World Cup,
Coach Burhalter told me my role at the tournament would be very limited. I fully acknowledge that I
let my emotions get the best of me and affect my trading and behavior. I apologize to my teammates
and coach for this, and I was told I was forgiven. I'm disappointed that there is continuing
coverage of this matter and extremely surprised that anyone on the men's national team staff
would contribute to it. I love my team and I'm focused now on improving and growing.
You know what? Won't be a story in four years. He's a talented kid, but he is like 20 years old.
this is hard.
I think coaching national teams,
I don't care if you're Netherlands, Portugal.
I mean, Rinaldo got benched.
Rinaldo got benched?
Players have been sent home through the years?
This is not easy.
When you have an event every four years,
the amount of pressure on the athletes and the coaches,
what if we only had the NFL playoffs
or March Madness was every four years?
So this thing is so combustible.
So I tend to, I look at the World Cup differently than other sports.
You are representing a country.
It's every four years.
I'm going to leave.
I'm going to allow some ego.
I'm going to allow some of this stuff.
I mean, when people win an Olympic event, they just immediately start bawling because
they put so much time.
You see a woman win the 220.
She's like bawling.
Well, the same of the World Cup.
If you win an NFL playoff first round game, you're not brought to team.
you're fired up because you got another game the next week.
Yeah.
So I just, I think we, we tend to treat World Cup in America like, this is outrageous.
This is expected in an every four year global event with massive pressure.
You're going to have little dust-ups.
You know what this is, I think it really boils down to is Burrhalter wanted this story out.
He told a version of it without mentioning the player.
He's embroiled in the contract negotiation.
Is he coming back?
Fans, they do not love Burrhalter.
Okay, you've already ripped a lot of his fans.
But I wonder what the team thinks, Colin, no player has jumped in and weighed in on this at all.
Nobody supported.
Nobody supported Raina.
Now, they haven't supported Berhalter, but it's weird.
All these guys live on social media.
You know this.
These young 25-year-olds are on social media all the time.
Not one is supported the player.
I have not seen a post saying Raina's my God, none of that, which is kind of interesting.
Yeah, I don't have any insight to it.
He acknowledged, he admitted, hey, I let my emotions get the best to me.
So he just doesn't like that the story's got legs.
But G. O'Reena is acknowledging it's on me.
He just doesn't love that it's extended.
He wants the story to end because it makes him look bad.
Getting support from your peers is important.
Sanchez, who's coming on a sec, was talking about the Jets linemen and tight ends, wearing.
Oh, and that's a big assing.
T-shirts that Mike White was wearing.
You didn't see that with Zach Wilson.
No.
You've seen the support.
Yes.
It says something.
You don't see it.
You're like, I don't know.
We'll see.
Yeah.
Jay Mac with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Live news.
Let's bring in Mark Sanchez, 10 years NFL, Fox NFL analysts, one of two rookie
quarterbacks that went each of their first two playoff games.
Flacco was the other.
No, I want to start with the Jets because of that.
And I think it's a big deal.
I am not a Zach Wilson guy.
I just never felt New York is hard and tough.
He's a little pretty, a little bit of a, plays a little bit of a cowboy, kind of got his way.
a little too Johnny Mansell, who I was not a huge fan of.
That was my comp.
He's Johnny Mansell with a better arm.
Just kind of, I'm going to make it up as we go.
It's not my style.
But that moment when Jets players were wearing like, what was...
It was a mighty ducks.
I don't know.
I'm a media guy.
Yeah.
It felt like something.
Yeah, I mean, it's one of those things.
I don't think it's time to write Zach's obituary.
He's going to get a shot somewhere, whether it's still in New York or somewhere else.
You know, he's a second overall pick.
somebody's going to either take a flyer on them or trade for them or something if it doesn't work out in New York.
But you can tell when guys gravitate towards somebody, when, you know, there's a guy head and shoulders above the room and just owns it and grabs it and runs with it.
Remember, Mike White played a ton of ball at Western Kentucky, came in with Kellan Moore, was drafted in 18 to the Cowboys, sat behind DAC, learned a ton of football, and his whole thing, just advance the ball.
Advance the ball, take care of it, advance the ball.
all his job is and he's playing it perfectly right now.
And then the other thing is, same thing with like Joe Burrow at LSU.
Remember when he got smacked against like UCF, his second to last year and gets up and finishes
the game?
I didn't watch the game, but when you get hit like that and you get, I mean, my man got
just shellacked last week, Mike White.
Milano put something nasty on him and folded him up like a lawn chair.
Well, he gets back up and comes back at the game.
They got an ambulance waiting for him after the game.
Like that's how hard he got hit.
They're worried about internal bleeding and everything.
And you heard him in the presser.
You just said, you're going to have to peel me off that field, dude.
And that's just a mentality thing.
And so the guys appreciate that.
And he's kind of taken on that identity of the coach, of the head coach.
Like, that's a dude you want with you in a bar fight kind of deal.
Like, he's our guy.
He's tough.
We'll ride with him.
You know, you had the Cowboys this week.
What a game.
Did you touch that?
17 and a half?
No.
But I defended the Cowboys because I said,
Dax's got a lot of qualities I like.
He's great at the podium.
Yeah.
I mean, he literally goes to the podium.
It's like, that's exactly what I want my franchise quarterback to look like and sound like.
No doubt.
He always says the right thing.
He totally gets the temperature to the room.
I don't think he's a brilliant arm talent, like a Mahomes, right?
Okay.
I think he can make the throws.
Yeah.
So when I watched this game, my takeaway was,
the defense didn't get a sack.
C.D. Lamb at times was invisible.
That's not the way they win.
They don't win asking Dak to throw it 40 times.
When Dak throws 28, this is a really good team.
Right.
And I felt they got out of their comfort.
Yep.
That's what it felt like to me.
No, I agree. I think part of it was the unforced errors, right?
Turpin with the muff punt, boom, turned into seven points, two picks.
But remember, steel went down, the right tackle.
So on the second interception,
Dak, I mean, he's got a D-Lyman and an offensive lineman
get walked right back into his lap and he doesn't finish the throw,
ball gets tipped, boom, interception.
The last drive, the 90-plus yard drive after the defense has a big goal line stand,
they put Jason Peters, 19-year veteran,
former right tackle was drafted to Buffalo to be a tight end.
He goes and plays right tackle.
He's normally a left tackle.
He was a staple in Philadelphia forever.
I played with him just like an iron man along the office.
offensive line. People love him. And he went to right tackle and they just drove it all the way down
the field, efficient, plenty of time for DAC and he just picked him apart. So I think part of that was the
time, you know, for him in the pocket. He just looked unsettled. And credit to Houston, I mean,
Petrie, that their strong safety, free safety, number five was all over it. I mean, he was in the
backfield, tipping footballs. He was everywhere. So they had, it was almost like a bowl game for Houston.
You know what I mean?
Like you're 1, 10, and 1.
We're throwing the whole kitchen sink at them.
They did the two-quarterback deal with Driscoll and Davis-Mills.
They had a great game plan.
Pep Hamilton called a really good game.
Yeah.
Just not enough juice at the end, not enough horses to run at the end, but an incredible drive
for that last one.
So Saturday night, you got a good one.
You got bills and the dolphins.
So it's interesting.
So, Mark, I'm 6-2-190.
You are significantly bigger than me.
But you were bigger than me.
You're a pro-athlete.
So I'm going to guess you're 6, 3-5.
225.
6-2 and a little change and
I'm bumping 240 now, big fella.
But I mean, you're, and I think, you're significant,
I think you're,
you feel way taller than a half inch taller than me.
So anyway,
the point being is that when you're Cam,
when you're Ben,
when you're Josh Allen,
you think you're bulletproof.
You ran over high school linebackers,
you ran over college linebackers.
And Josh had a move this week against the jets.
He's flying all over the place.
I'm like, do that feels hard.
early in the game.
Stop.
So when was the first time in the league that you got hit?
Because you didn't.
You rolled very well.
You threw well rolling.
How long in the league before you knew, oh, damn, I'm not getting hit?
Well, you hear it a lot.
And I saw other guys, big body guys, even like Carson Palmer tried to take on some guys before
separated his shoulder and stuff.
And so I'd see that.
And I'm not as big as Carson.
So I was like, ooh, you got to be smart here.
But I do remember we had a reverse.
we had a reverse against the Patriots.
I want to say it was my second game,
our second game in New York,
at home, and we tossed it,
and I go around to lead block,
and Vince Wilfork,
oh, boy.
He kind of comes through,
and I was like, oh, sweet,
I'll get a crack back, you know?
Like, I'm going to go cut them off.
Boom, and just ran into him like a brick wall.
And I hit him,
and I immediately get a stinger down my arm.
My arm just goes numb.
I was like, whoa.
And he just looked at me.
He's like, that's a bad career move.
fella.
That's funny.
And I was like, you're right, buddy.
And so, I mean, you know, you just, your best ability is availability.
Get down.
Here's the difference, though.
They run them a lot.
These design quarterback runs, even, you know, to try and ice the game last week against
the Jets, he's getting upended on, you know, third down, third and nine or whatever just
to keep the clock on.
It's not a small part of their offense.
I mean, you see the same thing.
Even when Dayball's gone to New York with the Giants, Daniel Jones is running the ball a lot.
So you expose him like that, they get hit.
He does have the big enough frame to handle those hits,
but at the same time, you know, it's a matter of time.
You only got so many throws in your arm,
you only can take so many hits, right?
Right.
And you'd prefer, you know, in my opinion,
just limit those as much as you can.
But, you know, he's one of those guys who's a lot like Mike White
with that toughness and that grit to him.
He's almost uncomfortable in a game
if he doesn't cause one of those plays
where he delivers the blow to a defender.
He initiates the contact.
Then you know he's locked in and ready to start slinging it.
But he's fun to watch.
That's going to be an incredible game.
They pressured the heck out of him last game, too.
So I'm curious to see what the plan is going to be in the snow.
So most quarterbacks, like Mahomes, as great as he is, got very good support.
Andy Reid, good players.
Lamar Jackson, they went and got Greg Roman.
They really built an offense for him.
I think Josh Allen, every year, Buffalo's giving him.
him another piece.
Oh, yeah.
And then there's times where Justin Herbert feels like he's doing a lot of it himself,
some of its injuries.
Tua, by the way, they've done a nice job to give him players that'll help him.
So I watched Mack Jones last night, and I've always said, you know, he's a franchise
quarterback, but I'm not in love with it.
But I saw him barking last night at his coaches, and I thought, you know, I was lucky.
I had really good support early in my career.
But if I was 24 years old, knowing I got one.
one shot. I'm coming off a very good rookie year.
And they give me a defensive coordinator. I've got no go-to receiver. Hunter Henry was their
target. Some of this, like I defended him. So it's interesting that you're on today.
And I said this when you were playing. Rex, I don't think, ever elevated the quarterback.
He saw the world differently. So you had moments you were probably thinking by year three.
Can I
Well, take me to what he's thinking last night.
He was impressive regardless.
I thought he was.
I mean, with what he's working with
and the circumstances there,
that's something serious.
Same thing with Justin Herbert,
overcoming.
This has been a year where he's really had to play quarterback
and really understand when guys are down,
when you don't have maybe the matchups you're looking for
where it's an automatic, hey, if it's ever one-on-one,
we're throwing to our X and he's our singled up matchup, whatever.
They don't necessarily have that.
There's nobody on the roster that's like, you know,
keeping defensive coordinators up all night during the week.
Like, man, what are we going to?
We got to double him.
We got to do this.
You don't have that.
And I've been in those situations too where, you know,
it's going to be, you know, your margin for error is even smaller.
It's harder in general in the NFL, even when you have great players.
But now you take away those players and Mack Jones has really got to get creative back there.
I think, to his credit, though, he's really owned it.
Even before the game, did you see him, like, bumping into Patricia and warm-ups?
And, like, he's understanding what's at stake here, and he's trying to grab it.
He's trying to take it and run with it and go.
And it's unfortunate because you don't want to, you know, waste that kind of talent if you can't help him, right?
You've got to put players around him to make him successful and, you know, give him the best possible scenario to succeed,
like to a like Josh Allen like a lot of these other quarterbacks that that get that type of talent
and help like Jalen Hertz has been given help but he has literally and he's improved with it that's
what you want to see right like his maturation with okay we're going to get you these shiny new toys
prove to us that you can take care of them play with them appropriately and you know it's just like
raising a kid at times right like can you handle this new responsibility and this this this
unlocking this ability for you let's see if you can handle it
Have he done it in a Jalen Hertz game yet?
No, not yet.
Well, it's the offensive line to me.
I mean, Jalen's playing great.
He's made some incredible throws.
He's truly improved as a passer.
Maybe more than anybody I've ever seen.
It's insane.
The jump from last year to this year.
It's like Josh Allen's jump.
It's wild.
And part of it's the talent around him.
A lot of it's that offensive line,
that's got to be the best line in football.
And Coach Stoutland's got those guys playing at a very high level.
Lane Johnson, you know, anchor in the thing.
Jason Kelsey still grinding it out.
That's a tough group.
But they're moving people now.
There's some road graders in the run game,
and Jalen Hertz contributes to that run game.
Yeah.
In the last 20 years, I don't remember quarterbacks.
Josh Allen and Jalen Hertz,
from middle of second year to third year,
I've never seen a player improve that much.
I mean, it's just,
it's almost like seeing the jump from like Steve Young
when he was in Tampa to then he gets some time to sit and watch
and boom,
in San Fran or, you know, gosh, a guy like Rich Gannon,
guys who've resurrected their career and then they look like a whole new person,
it's impressive.
Yeah, Hertz can run that RPO stuff.
Oh, it's money too.
And he doesn't even, like, move his feet.
You know, he's like feet and cement just slinging it.
Back in a second, I want to talk some Caleb Williams with Mark Sanchez.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays and noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.

Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jette.
And I'm Alex English.
We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more.
important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most
important years for black people in American history.

All right, so when you were with the Jets,
you had a great left tackle, good defense.
Excellent run game.
Mark, don't make a mistake.
Brock Purdy takes over.
and there's some vibes here that you've been in this space.
You probably occasionally want to let it loose.
Sometimes you do.
But they're giving them opportunities on double moves.
You know, he got...
Ayuk throw in the past.
Yeah, the Iuke throw, you know, listen, he doesn't blow you away with his arm strength,
but he can get the ball there, right?
He can deliver the football.
He's a great processor.
He's had a ton of reps in college.
There's something to be said for that.
It was interesting.
Even that game last week, looking at Davis Mills and Dak Prescott entering the league,
Davis Mills entering that game had 1160 pass attempts in college and the NFL.
Dak, when he showed up, had nine more pass attempts just in college than Davis Mills has had at
Stanford and in his NFL career.
So you see where these guys are.
That's why a guy like Brock Purdy, he's more plug and play because of the reps, right?
So I think when you have somebody like that, obviously he's got this oblique issue.
So they picked up Josh Johnson just in case as a guy.
The other reason, too, is you can't coach this young kid and try and get a backup ready and teach them the system all at the same time.
It's just too much going on.
So he's your ultimate insurance policy.
But he's seeing it well.
He's learning on the fly and he's getting bailed out.
Remember they had a he threw a pick to D. Lyman, I want to say, a dropping D. Lyman that's
booked him and he totally missed it, but it was a defensive holding. So he's like learning things
on the fly while winning and while avoiding some of those mistakes. It's only going to help him
in the long run. The bigger issue to me isn't Brock Purdy is Debo Samuel. Like when does he come back
because they need him? That really makes this offense go. And having that one-two punch of him
and McCaffrey in the backfield, I think that's huge for them. So the right guy won the
Heisman, Caleb Williams. So because I'm in Southern California and kind of a USC home,
Homer, one of the things that really jumped out with Caleb Williams is, and I've seen this before
with other quarterbacks, Mahomes, is some of his ability is instinctive. He's a great athlete.
But when I watch him play, his decision making, he has to be so smart. He threw almost no
interceptions. I know. I mean, it's incredible. His ability above his shoulders to make
smart decisions in real time.
Like that stuff is
he is one of the smartest football players
I've ever seen in my life. It really is.
It's incredible. That's throw against Oregon State.
When I watch it, and by the way now, now he's making millions
a year. Now he's the face of L.A. You can get in trouble in L.A.
I don't think people understand. The reason L.A. is so good for Caleb Williams
because it will challenge you. Oh, no doubt. Beautiful people.
Money offers. This kid has not.
had a misstep. No.
I mean, he is so, I mean,
I know, we're doing he's talented. Mark,
above the shoulders, he
is really rare.
Well, you see it on the field, and it's got to be that way in his life
as well, because I think those things go hand in hand, right?
It's hard to have everything together on the field if your
life's not in order, and he just looks like a kid
that's dialed.
Priorities. Yeah, he just gets it.
Like, he's one of those guys, we always said in school,
you know, don't be a list.
guy. Don't have your name come up on the list for being late, for missing class, for having
this, you know, overdue whatever library fees. Like just don't be a list guy. He's the furthest
thing from that. I mean, you hear his speech, his relationship with his dad. It's just, it's very
genuine. Now this, you know, what have you done for me lately? L.A. Market is going to be like,
all right, let's see what you got. Show me your second act, you know? And so the bar is set so high.
If anybody can handle it, it's him with the kind of guidance he's getting from Lincoln Riley,
a guy who knows about Heisman trophies and playing in playoff, big bowl games, all that.
So he's going to have the right circumstances and the right surroundings.
Now it's, all right, show me what else you got.
And that's going to be fun to watch because I think he's primed and poised to handle that major, major jump in stage.
This is where I'm amazed.
Like when I watched Mahomes handle all his success, I could have never done that at 25.
I was not,
it's a lot.
I was not mature enough.
There's no way I could have handled it.
And I think sometimes we forget,
Mahomes has 40 endorsements.
40.
He's got,
he's married.
He's got a kid.
It's the pressure.
Two kids now, no?
I think he may have two kids.
We got their game on Christmas Eve.
I'm excited to talk to them.
Who do you have?
I think sometimes certain people have the ability
to compartmentalize things.
do. And when I watch Caleb and I watch Mahomes, I see so, not even stylistically. Can you imagine
having college classes? You know, great looking kid, girlfriend, money, culture, Heisman.
I would have been at Sharkies every Wednesday night getting in trouble. I was not even on, I could
never have handled it. Well, I think the priorities, you're right with that, the compartmentalization,
but I also think he has, he doesn't feel like he's arrived.
You know what I mean?
I think you'd act like that if he felt like you arrived and it was over and this was the final destination.
I feel like this guy has so many, you know, more exits along the highway.
Like this guy's got a lot of runway left and that's the way he operates.
But, I mean, the way these guys can extend plays with their legs and stay intelligent with their distribution of the football,
the way Mahomes just kind of threw the little hook shot.
I mean, he looked like a corporal in a foxhole chucking a grenade.
Like, what was that?
And you know?
Remember, with Caleb and Mahomes, they play so fast and they're so creative.
The fact that neither are big interception guys.
Right.
You have to be processing stuff so fast upstairs.
And they just keep the defense on their heels constantly because of the first three seconds of the play
aren't it.
Like there's so much more that's going to happen.
And you could just see the defenders like, oh, boy, what's he going to do now?
And so, and they're also rhythm guys, like a shooter.
You know, when a dude's just not going to miss, keep feeding them.
Yeah, Burroughs got a little bit of that.
Exactly right.
When they get hot, they get hot.
All right, Mark Sanchez.
First Things First is around the corner.
Jay Mack, Ryan.
Thanks, everybody.
We'll see you tomorrow.
