Very. It's just that let's let's. settled down on the U fans out there knowing what Greg Burhalter is dealing with. He's dealing with a highly emotional youngest player on the team and decided I'm going to go with guys who are adult, you know, can handle the stage. I'm not going to go with the youngest player on my roster in this crucial time. Totally defend Burrhalter. But again, everybody's an expert on Twitter.

He was dealing with a real crisis and they almost sent Geo Raina home. Yeah. It was like a raise your hands. out of here and it was like it was it was a little too close for comfort and I think that's what got fans mad like why would his teammates want to send him home well if he's a if it's a toxic atmosphere because of one guy maybe it's it's not like no world cup players ever been sent home there was a player sent home this world cup I think some stars have been sent home in the past like it happens that's how you treat I mean soccer is sudden death when you get to the

knockout stage like it's high emotions when you only have every four years like it just can you imagine the NFL playoff? were every four years. You think the NFL playoffs are intense? You're representing a country. And for some of these countries, they don't have the college system like we do, where your local team gets knocked out.

You love the Falcons. Well, Georgia's going to be playing in the national title game or something. This is everything. Like Italy didn't make the World Cup. I mean, it is depressing if you're a football, soccer fan in Italy. Yeah.

By the way, the Lions beat Minnesota. It was one of our blazing five picks. Here was Dan Campbell after the W. You talked about you guys being ready to go. You guys have been ready to go for six weeks, man. That's the way to come out and set the tone for the day. Exactly what you guys did. You didn't bad a night.

Guess what? It wasn't quite the clearest game either. But that's okay, man. We did what we had to do, and we took control that game. Man, stay hungry just like you are, man. We're on fire right now. We've got to keep it. way to go. Good for Jared Goff. Easy team to root for. Everybody bailed on Jared Goff and Amar on St. Brown was a fourth round draft pick and Dan Campbell can be, you know, a little over the top sometimes. But I'll say this. Their talent is mostly on the right side of the ball offense. Goff at home and comfortable is very good. They are capable of getting into the playoffs and winning a shootout. A lot of teams that back into the playoffs, you know, they're well coached.

but they don't have really elite weapons. This team's got backs, receivers, a quarterback who's been to a Super Bowl, they can win shootouts. It's a scary kind of team, and they're also the kind of team that you can outplay, and they come roaring back in the fourth quarter. So it's a handful. They're a fun story. Most of my life, I couldn't stand watching the Lions, but I think they're, to me, the

Jags and the Lions are incredibly fun to watch, flawed, can give up, can, can, can, outplay teams and lose, but I'm rooting for them. And I think they drafted one, too, right? Didn't Walker go first and Hutchison's had a great... If not for Sauce Gardner, I think Hutchison might be the defensive rookie of the year. They've been outstanding. They have their all-line set. They've got a couple of backs. They have to go get better in the second. They've got to get better on the back end of their defense because when you're as good as they are offensively, they give up points on the back end. They've lost a couple of games. They should have won. Just remember, they went outdoors to New England and I believe lost 29-0.

Now, they did have a couple injuries to skill guys. But outdoors has been a kryptonite to goff. Pressure up the middle has been a kryptonite to golf. We'll see if the Jets can deliver both this Sunday. It's a big game. Lions Jets. I'll have a couple side wagers with friends on this one. What's the line on that?

Jets minus one. I think we want to wait and see on Mike White. He just spoke about an hour ago. Sounds like he's going to be a go. Quinn and Williams, 50-50. Not good. half. And this Morocco defense, it's like the 85 bears. Impenetrable. I'm not even joking. They have not given up. Did you see his lift? That's a Michael Jordan airtime. No, I mean, seriously, that's a 40-inch vertical on grass. They have given up no goals in the run of play. Only one was an

own goal. And this is against elite teams. Spain could do nothing against them. Ronaldo and Portugal rendered useless. Listen, man, if they stop Mbapapé in France in this one, it'll be one of the bigger upsets. I'm going to take France to win the whole thing. All right.

France has got to get by Morocco. The game's on Wednesday. They can play physical. Listen, did you see Ronaldo leaving the field crying? Yes. That's the emotion at the World Cup. There's no more for him. I think he's 37.

You're not bringing back a striker at 41 to the World Cup. You know, it's over for it. It was tough. I had Portugal. I took a bath in that game. Did not go well for me. You can't win them all. You know, I'm out here talking about the winners.

I do lose occasionally. It happens, you know. Next up, let's talk about Trevor Lawrence, one of the best games of his career. He's on a heater right now. He's on a heater. Look at this. He got a little lucky here. Goes right through the defender's hands for the touchdown,

finished with 368 yards, four total TDs. Evan Ingram making an appearance. Former Giants tight-in. Evan Ingram is playing well for them. Did you see that stiff arm on Trevor Lawrence Keeper? No. He just stiff-armed the defender at like the three-yard lines. Like, see, I'm going to the end zone.

They snapped a five-gave skid against the rival Titans. First win in Tennessee since November 2013. Wow. I don't even know if Trevor Lawrence was in college back then. No, no, I don't think he was. You know, he was the number one pick overall. Since week nine, we've got some stats here. He has been lights out.

I know it is a small sample size. Look at that. Ten touchdowns zero picks for Trevor Lawrence. He's separated from his quarterback class, as expected. I mean, Justin Fields has played extremely well, but he's not in the playoff mix because the rest of the roster's garden. Trevor Lawrence sits in that pocket and throws a beautiful football. So what are you, if you're Jacksonville and you're building on this for next year, what are you targeting?

Well, I would go get him a number one receiver. I would remain focused on the offensive line. You know, I think they are mostly, you know, they're really good teams, like let's say San Francisco can just draft best available player. That's a rarity. Generally, you go into a draft. Even, you know, good teams have needs, right? So I think Jacksonville, you know, they're going to focus if they can on the offensive line a little. you know, they would like, it's a very good second round for wide receivers.

You could have, there's not a lot of first round wide receivers this year, but there's about seven. Is Jordan Addison a one? I haven't talked to my scouts on him yet. My feeling is he's a two of a top of the second round, late first, early second. I have not, that is my guess. I know one guy I've talked to. He likes him a lot. Yeah, I can't tell if he's a football speed guy or like a four three 40 guy.

Well, he's smaller. He's small. He's dinged up a little. You know who else is small? Tyree Kill is small. Devonty Smith is small. But he doesn't run like those guys. So you don't get size or the burner speed.

So he feels like a second round pick to me. But I was looking like two nights ago on mock drafts. There are a lot of guys who I watched in college that I love. I mean, there's a guy at like Rice and then LSU. CCU, the big kid at TCU. C for Johnson, I believe, is his last name? So there's, maybe it's him, not Rice. Anyway, there is a big

receiver, but they all feel like second round guys. They're not quite, the kid at LSUs, another, I think he's got some pretty good size. Well, the big one will be Smith Najigba from Ohio State who is not playing in their bowl game. Yeah, and I don't see him as a later first round pick. I don't see him as a top 12 guy.

It's weird. He came into the season as the dude at Ohio State and Harrison because he's been healthy. Clearly better. Has been incredibly better, yeah. All right, final story. The matchup of week 14, Monday night football, Patriots at the Cardinals. Both teams look at a snap two game skids, keep their playoff hopes alive.

Arizona's are very dim, by the way. Patriots offense has not done well, but I want to remind you, Colin. Patriots went to Minnesota. Mack Jones looked good. He can look good in an indoor environment against the inferior defense. I think there will be points tonight. I've seen the over's gone up a little bit. I got 44.

I think it's up to 45 and a half. Arizona struggled at home, man. They just have not played well. Island game, Kingsbury and Kyler Marie. I don't know if it'll bubble over. You remember the Thursday night game against the Saints where Kyler Marie was angry, coming off the field, shut the bleep, you know, like,

was saying stuff to Cliff. This gets magnified in the island games. We'll see what happens with the Cardinals tonight. Very excited. I don't know. Who you got? Fox Bed has it as Patriots favor by two. I think it's a field goal game.

I'll take Arizona. I think it's close. I'll go with reluctantly. Patriots and Belichick. All right. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.

The Heard Lye News. Sean Payton got a Super Bowl, 15 years Saints coach. Nine of those years he got him to the playoffs. He's joining us on a Monday. So, you know, I was saying earlier, Sean, that once Thanksgiving hits

forward, none of these quarterbacks have all their pieces. They're missing the left tackle. They're missing a slot receiver. You know, it's kind of the difference between the guys who have talent but maybe have flourished on a perfectly healthy team. And then you look at Burrow and Herbert. And it's like, Sean, when I watch football, the real stars, I watched Herbert last night running for his life. And I'm like, there aren't five guys in the world with that pressure.

I mean, what was your takeaway on Herbert last night? Yeah, I agree with you. I felt in watching him the same way, it would have been hard pressed for me to have seen more than maybe three other quarterbacks in our league have the same success he had last night. I thought, and look, the announcers did a good job. I thought the Chargers defense played well, of course. And I still would like to see them. I'm talking about the Chargers.

I'd like to see them run the ball better. Yeah. And take a little bit of that pressure off of the cue. But, look, he was outstanding. And again, they need to win. Yeah. By the way, Kelly's emerging out of UCLA, Austin Eccler. So they have some running backs.

They drafted another one, Isaiah Spiller out of Texas A&M. So they've got some kids who could help. And I agree with you. Too often he's got to put a Superman cape on. And I just feel like it's it you're asking too much. Now, you know, I say this is I like Tua. There's limitations here. I mean, Miami's tried to move off him.

We know that now. Going forward, he plays Buffalo this week, I think he, JMAX said. What do you do in the offseason? Sean, if you just feel like we like the kid, but you look at the AFC, Sean, Burrow, Herbert. These guys are big men. What do you do with that position? Well, you say. it very clearly, and I believe the word you used was like.

There are a handful of guys and teams that are in a similar position where they kind of like the quarterback they have, and yet they're still looking to possibly upgrade. And so look, we're quick to judge every Monday, right? And this season, I think we're at 54 different quarterbacks have started games. Wow. We're almost at a point where on average, each team has started two different quarterbacks. We're not quite at that number 64. But it's vital to your success.

And you either have the guy. And if you don't, that's fine. then you have to be that much better around them. History has told us we can still win the ultimate prize, and teams have done that, but then we have to be dominant on defense. We have to have an outstanding ground game. I thought one thing in the game last night that was apparent,

and I heard Collinsworth, they talked about it briefly that robber or thief coverage. The charges did a great job of just dropping someone in the middle of the defense where all of those defense are caught. Yeah. And really taking that route away where ultimately the throws are going to have to happen outside the number. That's right. And so what is outside the numbers mean, though, Colin?

Those are further away. Those are longer throws. Right. And that'll be copied for the next few weeks until, you know, until that they'll have. they'll have an answer for that. Well, you know, what's really interesting, Sean, is Tua's comp was Drew Breeze. Now, I always said I thought that was unfair because Drew's the most accurate thrower of the football I've ever seen.

He's a guy who could sit 20 yards from a tire and spin it through that thing. But people can say, Breeze and Tua are the same. My takeaway was always Drew was a much better athlete than people gave him credit for. He just didn't, you didn't, because of your clever play calling, but I thought it was on, I think Breeze in his prime was really a good athlete. I bet he was a golfer, a tennis player. I mean, I bet he was. So I don't think, too, is, I don't think he's his athletic. That's my take. You tell me. Yeah, I would agree. I think this, Drew, Drew was a phenomenal foot athlete. You know, he was size 13 feet. He had huge hands. He could. He could.

could vertically go up and dunk a basketball right underneath the basket. He beat Andy Roddock at youth tennis when he was 13. Wow. So I think sometimes we have this this gauge for athleticism and it equates to height, weight, size speed. In Drew's case, he was a fantastic athlete. And I can't, I haven't had a chance to watch too closely do some of the things. I've seen the season he started off and he's begun,

and it's great to see the progress he's made. I think McDaniel there, those guys have done a great job. I don't know that that's my comp for Tua. I don't think Tua is as big as Drew. And the concern with Tua coming out, really, from everyone was just help and can he stay injury-free? And look, that's valid.

but he is someone that is fit into that system very quickly. It's hard to play in one of these RPO systems where at the snap of the ball, you're having to decide, am I not only who I'm throwing it to, but am I handing it off to the runner or throwing it? I mean, that's a decision. We didn't ask Grease to make that decision a lot.

Right. So a different type of offense, you know, I thought, I thought the key last night, though, was the Chargers on defense. Yeah. So the Brock Purdy thing, it's interesting. So when you were in New Orleans and Drew got hurt, I always thought this, you and you and Mickey Loomers were smart on this, is that your backup played a lot like Breeze.

So you didn't have to, you know, make it. And then you had Tassam Hill who could give you a total curveball. But your starter and your backup had similarities. And so when I watch Garoppolo and I watch Brock Purdy, they're both accurate distributors, both can spin it. Neither's big. But when I watched Kyle's game plan yesterday, it looked like Jimmy's. They didn't change anything. I was like, that's the same game plan.

So that's telling me that Kyle doesn't see Brock as significantly less talented. That's my interpretation. I mean, that the heat, that Kyle. Kyle likes Brock Purdy. I think if you walked into Kyle's office and you shut the door and you said, hey,

listen, off the record here, you got Brock Purdy now with this team, he would turn and smile at you and say, let's go. You know, in other words, they're the competitive nature of the coach who believes in his system,

who believes they're going to run the ball well. Now, so obviously, Purdy can get them in and out of the right checks. You see them at the line of scrimmage a lot, alert alert, can't can. They're getting to, so pretty small, you know,

he can function in the system. That's important. Um, but behind closed doors, that challenge, it, it kind of can create a little, uh,

sense of urgency for the team too. Yeah. And so we saw it earlier in the year with Dallas. I spoke about it a few years back when we put in Teddy Bridgewater that everyone else on the team now has to raise their level of play. It's not going to be about Rock Purdy. It's going to be, hey, can the defense be that dominant? Can the running game be that dominant? And so that type of miniature crisis, if you will, can serve the team pretty well.

and I felt strongly about that game in picking it yesterday. We've done these studies before, and we spend so much time. You've heard me say this. I hate that 98% of our analytics discussion is on two-point plays or fourth down. That's like 98% of our discussion is on 5% of what we use analytics. I mean, there's so many other things. Right. But we beat Washington in a game of,

a few years ago. We were down 14 points with, oh, two minutes left in the game. It was a score, kickoff. We hold them to three and out. We score again. It was one of those crazy games where when the game ended, you felt like, man, we just stole a game. And the numbers suggest the following week,

the team that does that is an 019 loser. and I remember we were playing the Rams the next week in Los Angeles and I didn't know whether to talk to the team about this. Bring it up, not bring it up. I think I brought it up on a walk through the day before the game. Well, Tampa Bay had a similar win last week. You know, Monday night football, they're down 13, a few minutes left. They score. They get to stop.

They score again, Brady in the two minute. And sure enough, it now is 21 straight. You know, in other words, so periodically there are those games that take place. And no one in the building, no one's even aware of it. Right. But, you know, you still won the following week. It's tougher to win. Yeah, no, that's a great point.

I worry about the Eagles winning so comfortably so often that they're going to get into a tight game in the playoffs. Sean Peyton is now joining us. Sean, I said, sometimes you'll see this in March Madness, where a team, maybe a Kentucky,

they're just, they're blowing through people. And then they get into the first round, and they're a big favorite, and they have a bad half, and it gets really tight because they haven't been, you know, maybe they've walked through their conference. And I look at Philadelphia in that division, and I think, well, outside of Dallas, nobody really matches up. Would you be concerned at all if you were coaching them about, we're not playing? playing in close games here at all.

Or she, you know, just maybe they are that good. Yeah, I'll be honest, Skip. I kind of want that problem. I think this, the thing that has impressed me with Philadelphia is when they needed to do it on the ground, they've been able to. When they've needed to do it in the air, you've seen, you've seen the, the, you've seen the, huge improvement from the quarterback and then the skill outside with Brown and Smith. So when they needed to do it, either running the ball, passing the ball, they've shown that

they're able to do that. Defensively, they're getting their takeaways. Yeah, they're going to face some tougher opponents when they get in the postseason. But each week, as you watch this team play, you're seeing a more confident and confident group. And that's going to carry over into the postseason. And ultimately, it's going to take a team. And I'm not even looking at Philadelphia's defense per se,

but somebody that can slow them down of 49ers, for instance, on defense, maybe Dallas on defense. It's not going to be the team that scores more the other side of the ball. It's going to be a team that can frustrate what they do offensively. And we haven't seen it yet. And I think it's been pretty impressive to watch. Sean Payton. I said Detroit's got holes, but the organization deserves credit.

They have drafted the offensive side of the ball very well. And they're young, but they're playing with house money. Yesterday they're faking punts. They're throwing to tackles. I think teams like that are scary to play because they got nothing to lose and they're hyper-aggressive. Did you ever face a team like that? Do you buy into that lion team we're seeing? Yeah, I do buy into that because it's true.

First off, there's no other team in our league that's experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of blows in the last two years. I mean, they've lost to 60-some-odd yard field goals that have landed on the crossbar and bounced over. I mean, how many times have we seen one of those gut-wrenching defeats and yet they've still bounced back? And it's a credit to, I know Dan, you know, I coached him when I was at the Giants and he was part of my staff at the Saints. And it's a credit to he and the resilience. You feel like you're going to be, you're going to be playing someone that's going to be a tough out. I mean, they've been through it all. Yep.

Completely, though, Colin, all the numbers would suggest this. They made a change in the offseason with their offensive coordinator. They put in new leadership. they've completely revamped how they're running their offense. And they are one of the top three offenses in the NFL. And you say that to yourself, wait a minute, the Lions? Yes. I know that that's one of the tapes that most of the NFL is watching each week now.

They're doing things creatively in the running game. They're getting explosives in the passing game. Jared Golf's having a fantastic season. So despite some of the shortfalls we saw earlier in the year from their defense, they are a dangerous team offensively. And then when you take their offense at home, they're the third. I think they rank third in scoring offense when they're playing in Detroit. So they've improved a lot.

And I see that team, I'm getting past this season, in the next year as a team that's going to, they're going to challenge Minnesota in Green Bay in that division. Three minutes left final question. The Niners have a stack roster and it's older and expensive. I would stick with Purdy and Trey Lance. Most people, if Brady was available, would go for it. But there's a lot of mouse to feed financially.

And some of my best players, Trent, Debo, McCaffrey, Kittle, get injured. I want a deep roster. I don't want to spend a fortune on a quarterback. I don't. Am I nuts? If Brady was available, I think I'd stick with the kids. Am I nuts? No, I don't think you're nuts.

But I would say this. who's to say that Tom's going to require that high-end price tag? You know, he's shown us historically in the past that he wants an opportunity to win somewhere. So if, in fact, he's looking to sign with another club and the story of him going back to San Francisco, where he grew up, all those other things, I wouldn't expect his asking price to be astronomical. A lot will have to do, Colin, with these next four weeks and then into the postseason. How's Brock Purdy play as we wind down this year? Do they feel like when the season ends, do they feel like he can help be a part of the solution,

or is he part of the problem? He's a fascinating story right now. I said, I expect to see Brock Purdy's name and lights in Nashville are at a country bar. That's funny. Hey, by the way, I got to ask you this, do you miss coaching? I mean, you're so good at what you do now. Do you miss it? Do you get up Sunday, miss it?

Yeah, you miss the wins. You miss. So there's a grind element. We talk about the lack of sleep and during the week and the hours, but there's nothing like finding something on a Wednesday or Thursday that you see in a game that you think is going to apply on the weekend. And then sure enough, it comes to fruition and it scores a touchdown and it's the difference in winning and losing a game. And, you know, until you begin the process the following Monday, that feeling of success and the competition, those are the things that are hard to replace.

You can have your perfect day in the studio. You know, talk about a few things that come up and maybe. hit on all your topics, but you get in your car, you drive home, it's not quite the same. Now, that being said, I get my football fix in the studio, though. And when you're around guys like Howie and Strayhan, Jimmy and Terry and Charles, there's this element that it fills you. Like, I can't wait for work on Sundays. Well, you've been great.

Sean Payton, he's under the weather, delivered for us. He likes that 5 o'clock Pacific Coast start for the Patriots, Arizona. He'll be in bed by 8 o'clock crash tonight. I will be. I like New England in this game. You like New England? Yeah, I think it missed the week where we saw Belichick rush, Tyler, a certain way. We see a little cage rush.
