Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:06 A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. Starting point is 00:02:00 New balls for these yo kids. Super Bowl. Championship. That should always be the expectation. All right, man. That you go on here. Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast. We got one of the best receivers, one of the best young receivers in the National Football League, Chris Olive.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Appreciate you joining me, brother. I appreciate you for having me, man. So tell me about your journey. Like, you know, the Ohio State. A lot of California kids is getting out there now. Like, you know, they're going to Ohio State. They're going to Bamah. Y'all getting out there.
Starting point is 00:02:29 They didn't used to leave like that. Nobody used to go past SC, especially if they four or five stars. Now, S-C, then, you know, they didn't fell off the block and they're trying to come back. But what went into your decision to go to Ohio State? Man, it was a long decision. It was a tough decision for me. But like you said, the Pact 12 kind of fell off when I was coming out high school for a couple years. So it was a tough decision for me to lead a Pact 12 because that's what I grew up watching,
Starting point is 00:02:55 especially growing up watching Oregon, USC, UCLA. But I feel like it was the best decision for me. It took a long time for me to be able to find. I was only 17 years old. So being able to commit from California, from a California kid, all the way to the Midwest to Ohio State. My family and I, we just prayed about it and felt like it was the best decision for me. So ended up out there and it was the best decision on my life.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Yeah, yeah, it worked out. It definitely worked out for you. Was it like a culture shock or anything or was it just smooth the whole way? It was tough at first. You know, being away from home, you know what I'm saying, all the way in the Midwest. I was, like I said, I was only 17 years old, and I was on my own. So it was tough for me the first couple months. I always wanted to come home, but my parents wouldn't allow me.
Starting point is 00:03:39 So I just had to stick to it, man, just grow up and turn into a man. I felt like it was smooth after that. I mean, it looked like they had a good culture there, you know, good coaches. Do you think that kind of helped you throughout your time, the great coaching staff that they had when you were there? Yeah, it helped me a lot, transition. The players, the coaches. I feel like it was home. And they helped me a lot,
Starting point is 00:04:04 especially getting through my little funk early on. And coaches helped me lean on them, leaning on a couple of my teammates, and it turned out to be good. Yeah, I mean, now they're saying Ohio State is receiver you. I mean, at least the last four, five years, it's hard to argue, you know?
Starting point is 00:04:21 Yeah. The only thing, the only people that got an argument is the LSU and they got two dogs, but y'all didn't have them for the last four, five, years. You had two first rounders your year, Smith and Jigba this year. They talk about Marvin Harrison Jr. is going to go top five. Like, you got to be proud about that. Man, I mean, it's crazy to think about. We always dream about that in the receiver room. We always compete against each other. Always talk mess to each other. They know how to be in practice. And we all
Starting point is 00:04:53 turn out to be elite receiver. So it just started to practice, man, and just trying to better yourself. And receive for you, it's tough, tough to claim right now. But we got a lot more coming in the future. So that's going to be an easier question in the future. No question. No question. You play with some great quarterbacks. You play with CJ Stroud.
Starting point is 00:05:13 You play with Justin Fields. How proud are you of them and do you still got like a relationship with him? Are you just, you know what I mean? Just scored. Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, that's relationships for life. Relationships you build in college. Justin was a great dude.
Starting point is 00:05:29 off the field. And so, like, he finally got some help over there. So I'm excited to see him ball, man. He's a crazy talent, man. One of the best I've seen, one of the hardest workers I've seen you, man. I can't wait to see him ball. CJ is a natural leader. I've seen him from his first day.
Starting point is 00:05:45 He stepped on campus. He's just a natural leader and a great person off the field. So I'm excited for them. Can't wait to see their careers take off. Did you and Garrett have any, like, friendly little rivalry? Both y'all are balling in your rookie year, and y'all were both up for rookie of the year throughout the year. Did y'all have any, like, conversations?
Starting point is 00:06:03 Like, hey, come on, you better pick it up. No, I just went to 150. Nah, we ain't really had no conversations like that. Gary, he's a good dude, man. I'm excited to see him. I mean, one of the best athletes I've seen, man, and just to see him ball, especially in New York. And getting the quarterback like Aaron Rogers,
Starting point is 00:06:26 I feel like he's going to probably, be one of the best receivers in the NFL right now. So I can't wait to see him ball, and I'm excited for his career. I mean, you ball, you ball too last year. You smooth this. I remember we had your game against Arizona, and you just smooth, boy. You're moving out of your brakes, into out of your routes. It's just inconsistent quarterback play you had.
Starting point is 00:06:46 But this year, y'all got Derek Carr, you know, who's been more consistent throughout his career than the guys that you guys had last year. Has there been any, you know, chemistry between you guys throughout OTAs and all that? Oh, hell, yeah. We've been brewing up. We've been cooking up. I feel like it's just getting better and better. Just being on the field together, staying consistent.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And that's how we all, that's how everybody built chemistry, though, just getting those reps and continuous repetition. I feel like we all know what he could do on the field, but he helps me a lot off the field, too. Just a leader he is and just his vibes he come with. I feel like always makes a young player better. So I'm excited to play with him. And y'all got another big guy coming back at Michael Thomas.
Starting point is 00:07:27 You know, I mean, he's in your room. He's been a great receiver in the league for a long time. What advice and what, you know, kind of mentorship has he given to you? He always been mentoring me since I got drafted and he always looked out for me, man. Just everything on and off the field, just finding a crib in New Orleans or just finding the chef. Just all the little things that takes your games to the next level of just body treatment, all that, all the little stuff. And he really behind the scenes, but, man, he did so much of me in my rookie year. I can't even explain.
Starting point is 00:08:02 I'm excited to be able to play with him again, too, man. He worked so hard. We all know we could do on the field when he helped him, too. He was one of the best series in the NFL, not the best. And I'm excited to play with him again. Your rookie year is kind of a blur, but was the league what you expected it to be? You know, everybody got their impression. They thought of what the league is, all the lights and everything.
Starting point is 00:08:24 And then you get out there and you start cooking, you'd be like, hey, These dudes, you either think these dudes is way nicer than I thought or these dudes is like, hey, very regular. Man, you can say that. I thought it was going to be way harder. I thought it was going to be a lot tougher. But when you go to a place like Ohio State, man, they prepare you for that in practice every day.
Starting point is 00:08:44 You can go out against the best. So when you get to the NFL, it's like second nature. You used to playing guys like that. You see guys NFL at Ohio State that came before me. So it was kind of a lot smoother than I thought. And like I said, I'm going to keep building and be ready for a year or two. Quarterback is a new docu series that takes a unique look at each season told through the eyes of the NFL quarterbacks. For the first time ever, the NFL is giving unprecedented access for quarterbacks to be miced up each and every game of the NFL season.
Starting point is 00:09:20 The series features exclusive unprecedented access to Patrick Mahon. Kurt Cousins and Marcus Marriota from the beginning of the 22 season to its conclusion, following them both on and off the field from the inside of the huddle with their teammates to the inside of their homes with their families. The series features behind the scenes of the biggest moments of the season. Quarterback premieres July 12th, only on Netflix. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Some call it grotesque. others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:10:18 You got another Ohio State guy on the other side playing corner in Lattermore. Have you guys had any conversations? Did you have any conversations or relationship with him before you got to the Saints? Or was it just straight up when you got there? It was like, what up? Not really. I didn't really know him.
Starting point is 00:10:32 He just went to Ohio State. But he's a smooth dude, man. I like his game a lot. He don't really talk much, but he's a smooth lockdown corner. And just the example, he sets, and the standard he sets. That's what I look at. I study success. The years he's been in the league,
Starting point is 00:10:49 been the most of Pro Bowl. So I kind of take out to him and follow. follow this step in practice. I should. Was there any, like, you know, wild moments for you in the league, you know, guys you always looked up to and wanted to see play or guys you always thought you kind of modeled your game after
Starting point is 00:11:05 that you were like, man, it's cool to see him in person or Tom Brady or Arod or somebody that you were like, man. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You know, man, I'm young. I'm 22, so I grew up watching all these dudes Tom Brady. We played against Aaron Donald,
Starting point is 00:11:21 just guys like that, some of the best players in the league. just be able to see them in person and see them actually playing against each other, Lamar Jackson, just explosive players. Like, you're like, damn, I'm really in NFL playing against each other. That's how I'll be out there. But like I said, I'm here in the NFL. I'm not trying to be a fan. But like I said, I grew up watching them.
Starting point is 00:11:41 So it's kind of a wild moment for me. Yeah, yeah. You'd be like, hey, I got that thing on me too. You know, you're nice, but me too. Yeah, you know. Yeah, but that's cool. Have you? So it's settled in for.
Starting point is 00:11:53 you, you know, obviously your second season is always a lot more calm. The offseason, you got OTAs and all that, you prepare it for, like, do you feel more confident, more calm? Like, you got a better grasp of what to expect going in? Yeah, man, I feel, I feel real good, man. I feel real good going into this year. Just going in, especially spending my last year, year one, just filling everything out, knowing how the season going to be, knowing how long the season going to be knowing just to get a routine down. You know, year one, you're always scrambling and trying to get stuff down. But like now, I feel a lot better going into the year.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Like I said, I got my routine down, and I'm excited to be able to compete at a high level. What's your goals going into the season? Man, I'm just trying to win, man. Last year was tough for me. I ain't never lost that much in my life. Man, that shit took a toll on me. I mean, I can't, I don't sit right with me. So I was just trying to be the best version of myself to be able to help my teammates
Starting point is 00:12:56 and help them be better. And we're just trying to win and get to the playoffs. Yeah, that's a, I mean, that's a realistic goal. I mean, you guys had a lot of talent just got banged up throughout the year. And we're still in it. You know, the division was kind of down last year in the South. So y'all still had a shot for most of the year. But, you know, going through, you know, James and Andy Dawton and then Tase them for a couple games.
Starting point is 00:13:18 And it was like, anytime you got to, quarterback turmoil like that is tough. Yeah. But who was like your idol growing up that you looked up to in terms of the receiver room? Was it somebody young like like Devante or was it was it Randy or you know, I might be I might be too old. It was like Randy Moss.
Starting point is 00:13:43 I watch a lot of TED game. I love Ted game. Just the excitement he brought to the game. Every time he touched the ball, he might go score. So I watched a lot of tag in. Odell, O'Dill is one of my receivers.
Starting point is 00:13:56 I admire, too. Just like the excitement, he brought to the game also. Every time he touched the ball, he might go score. And his celebrations, all that shit, was always excited to me.
Starting point is 00:14:06 So probably those two receivers right there, Ted again and Odell Beckham. Yeah, boy, y'all, y'all Ohio State Boys is Loyal. You're going to go to TIG again. I said,
Starting point is 00:14:17 that's loyalty, boy. Yeah, you know. This is Netflix and Grill, sponsored by quarterbacks only on Netflix. So who is the Mount Rushmore of Ohio State receivers for you? It sounds like you're a historian. That's tough. But I'm going to have to put Marvin Harrison on there, man. I ain't never seen nothing like that, man.
Starting point is 00:14:40 So he for sure up there. I put Chris Carter, Ted Yen, got to be on there. and I'm going to go to Gary Wilson. Okay. Humility? Chris, humility? Those four right there. You know, you got the most receiving TDs in Ohio State history, but ain't going to put yourself on the list. I respect it.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Yeah, I've seen the work they put in, man. It's some crazy athletes. Man, shit, I ain't never seen anything like them. They say the same thing about your head. Yeah. It's a lot of receivers, though. a lot of receivers, so I'm going to get left off. But then the best four to me.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Did you see it when you were there with Marvin Harrison, Jr.? Because he was so young when you were there. Man, he came in as a freshman like that. He's so talented. Everybody knows what his dad is, but he's so talented, man. But the work athlete is even better. And he'd be in there for facility. First one in, last one out, literally every day.
Starting point is 00:15:44 And it's not no job to him. He actually loved what he do. and he'd be excited to get to work every day. I ain't never seen anything like it. He probably worked the same now. And even with all the success, he got, I know it's not going to get to his head, just the type of person he is.
Starting point is 00:16:01 And I'm excited for him in the future. So, you know, I know you're a big-time gamer. Have you been on it this all season? You know, you're playing Call the Duty or Apex or what's your own, Diablo? Nah, I'm on 2K, man. You're on 2K? What's your build? What's your build?
Starting point is 00:16:15 You probably got a Durant build or a LeBron. build or, what else they building these days? You, you're going to I got a little Paul George build. Okay. Okay. That's one of my favorite hoopers, PG. Who's your team? Dallas. I was, I grew up
Starting point is 00:16:32 a Dallas fan with Dirknoiskey, Jason Kid, Jason Terry. You'll be from Southern California and not being Legos. You get on my nerves. Hey, Dallas, I don't know. I just, I was born into, to be a Dallas fan. That's my, that's my squad still. I love it. I love it. Well, you got a
Starting point is 00:16:48 sad this year because y'all had the talent and then it just was like y'all got kairri y'all, you know what? And it just... Yeah, they had the talent, man. I ain't know what happened. They just had, they ain't had no defense at solid wood. Right. We're going to bounce right back, though. Right, no question.
Starting point is 00:17:03 They're going to, you know, I mean, they got to figure it out. So it is in the league. Well, shit, that's all I got for you. If you got any questions for me, I'm happy to answer them. But I really appreciate you joining me coming on the show. Appreciate you, man. Appreciate you, a legend, man. Appreciate you for having me.
Starting point is 00:17:18 All love, all love, brother. You enjoy your day, enjoy your off season, and look forward to seeing y'all this season. I think we got your game. We got y'all game for a Thursday night. I'll catch you out there. Oh, yeah, for show. God bless me.
Starting point is 00:17:29 God bless. The volume. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest,

Starting point is 00:18:49 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:19:05 With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. It was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human.
