Starting point is 00:03:18 That's going on here. Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast, and we have an incredible guest this week. Javon Hardgraves of the San Francisco 49ers. How you feeling, brother? I'm good. coming out the wind and on the out day, so I'm feeling pretty good this week.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Yeah, I mean, y'all got one of the best defensive lines in the National Football League, and clearly last year, you know, we don't want to talk about the other team, but y'all had a historic year with the other guys. How do you feel like you merging with Chinatineers squad?
Starting point is 00:03:50 I think I'm feeling in pretty good. Like you say, we got a lot of talented guys on this team. So it's just, man, everybody brings something different to the table and it's just, you know, good to, lead one situation and go to another great situation. So I'm feeling pretty good. That's good.
Starting point is 00:04:07 I mean, you went back to Pittsburgh this week, you know, play against your old team. It is picket out of the shotgun. And he's going to get sacked again. Hargrave and Kinlaw got there. The Grave Digger. The Grave Digger will get the sack. You can't do it any better. Hargrave is leading the way.
Starting point is 00:04:24 He clears it out. He's got to get the gap. He does. Kinlau wraps around in the Hargrave Digger. Just buried Kenny Pickett. You did the T.J. Watt when you got the sack, man. That had to be fun. Nah, that's my little kick the door.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Everybody thinks that's a little kick to the door. I ain't lift the foot up. I drew the door and keeping down. It's funny you said that because that's what some of my teammates here said too. I love how you did the T.J. No, I ain't take T. I ain't take T. I didn't say T.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Well, you look damn good doing it. Either way. You look good doing it. Yeah, it felt good. It felt even better. Your defense looked really dominant on Saturday. How was it dealing with Wilkes? I mean, I guess this is your first year with him,
Starting point is 00:05:08 but everybody else has kind of been with Domingo Ryan's or Robert Sala. And has he changed anything or has he done anything different with this defense that you've heard or you notice? I think he really trusted guys. He just came in and kind of bought in to what they've been doing before me and him both got here. So I think he just really just started trusting the guys. And I think everybody said he's known for his blitz. And of course, we blitz, too. But I think he trusts like for the front of the matchups and let us roll.
Starting point is 00:05:43 I mean, shoot, y'all got one of the best fronts in football. So, I mean, you got to trust it. I saw y'all go 5-2 one time. What was that about? I said, I ain't seen 5-2 in the middle of field in a long time. That's crazy. Yeah, we did. Like you said, we got a lot of people.
Starting point is 00:05:57 So I guess they just want to get everybody out there one time and see what we can do. Hey, I love it. Right. I know Pittsburgh was like, what is this? I know they ain't got all these dogs, got a zero-node. Yeah, we didn't put that on tape in the preseason. So I love that.
Starting point is 00:06:15 They were confused. Bro, I ain't seen that on tape in a long time, but it worked. It worked. Them line backwards was freed up. Hey, fly. The boys coming through free. Hey, fly. And Fred and Greenlaw, boy.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Tell me about them. Them boys be running and hitting. Man, it's so fun to watch because it's just like, you just hear it coming. Like, I feel like, Fred be streaming before he even gets to the tackle. And then you hear him make the tackle and just get so crunk. And Green Lodge is out there, Joe, yeah, he everywhere on the field. Yeah, man, that was really like my first game. That was my first time really seeing it up front.
Starting point is 00:06:53 So it was just, even watching the film, just like, and these boys are different. different. Everywhere. Side boy 29. Bringing it. And bringing it. Yeah, that was real fun to watch. So, you know, you've got to get to that ball.
Starting point is 00:07:07 You want to make some plays because them boys, some boys can make any play out there for real, for real. They can. And if you won't get there, they're there. That's what I'm saying. You probably get there because they're going to meet her. So what went to your decision? You know, I know Philly did everything they could to retain you.
Starting point is 00:07:22 You had you had suitors everywhere. What went into the decision to go to San Francisco? And I think it's just like, you know, like, if you can get paid to go somewhere similar to where you was at, and it's like, you know, when everybody thinks you're leaving for the money, you're like, I'm about to go somewhere to the arms. You go get as much money as I can. And when, like, San Fran came talking to me and they basically in the same ballpark as everybody else, I just felt like it was a no-brainer. And I'm just like, yeah, this is pretty much done.
Starting point is 00:07:51 I knew what it was quick. Right. I'm getting paid to go to the number one defense. it's like it's a no brain. It's a no brain. And you get to a win? Yeah. Like, come on.
Starting point is 00:08:06 You ain't going to a situation where you're about to get doubled every play. They got to deal with Bolsa. They got to deal with Armstead. They got to deal with Drake Jackson now. I mean, I don't think people understand that. Like, you know, I mean, yeah. It's like, it's like when people talk about LeBron, like LeBron, I want to team.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Yeah, you want to team up with talented guys. They can make things a lot easier. for you. So, yeah, all of that went into effect in my decision. No question. No question. I feel that. How has it been with Kyle? Because Kyle is a little different of a coach than most coaches that most players are used to. And I know you play
Starting point is 00:08:39 for a few head coaches. What could you say about Kyle Shanahan that's different from the coaches you play with? Man, he's very detailed. And just, you know, we're going to watch film all day. We're going to be in a team against the whole day, and we're going to watch film. And you're going to know, like, I'm going to know what they
Starting point is 00:08:57 trying to do on offense, like, pretty much. Like, I just, I never seen somebody that detailed on the office end just, where the run's supposed to hit or who's supposed to have a ball right here. Like, what's going on in this play? Like, even on the defensive side, if you would have done this, like, this would have happened or what they're trying to do to you. It's just like, I ain't, I've been around some great coaches, but he wanted the
Starting point is 00:09:23 smartest ones out of doing around. Every time you leave a team meeting, you just felt like you came out of the class. You're like, damn, I feel smarter. Man, like, you just think, like, okay, they're running the zone. Like, we run outside zone. But, nah, it's this detail, like, or really, even, like, to, like, the steps of, like, the blockers, or if they would be at this, this is how it would have happened, or the running
Starting point is 00:09:48 back got to stretch it out here. So, yeah, I never, I wasn't into offense like that, but I can tell, like, he really know what he's doing. Yeah, by the time you leave San Francisco. you're going to be at a coordinate for somebody. I can do O.C. The way them eat is last. I know what they do against the defense.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Right, right. How has it been, you know, you came from South Carolina State. You know, one of the highest paid defensive linemen in the league now, it got to feel good to come from South Carolina State, represent your school, represent the HPCUs like you are. How was that transition been? and how much pride do you take in there? And when it first happened, it was so fast.
Starting point is 00:10:32 It's just like, you know, me, don't get me wrong. I was out there at HECU just. Don't know what everybody. That was fun. And so when I got to the lead, it's like, you know, people are a lot more fast. I don't even know how to get out the blocks right now. Like, when I'm first getting that, it's like, they stuck. I'm stuck to the office of the line.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Get your hands off. Like, so it was definitely a transition for me. And I even tell people now, my friends, like, when you play in the NFL, it's like, every other, like, football looks so slow. Like, even like when I go back to Chicago, I'm just like, why is this going so slow? Like, I never looked at it like that until I got to the league. But I think from going to state, though, for real, I just kept my mentality, right? and I just kept working. It just took advantage of everything.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Like, when I was at Stockton State, we didn't even have cold tubs or I never knew what a massage was. So when I got to the league, like, I'm always on, like, you know, for my dive or massages or making sure I have the right treatment for this week. Or just, I just think it just made me take advantage of everything that the lead provided. So that's what made me who I am today. is back. No more preseason games. The regular season is here. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
Starting point is 00:13:34 And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream,
Starting point is 00:14:07 this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. So what has surprised you the most since getting to San Francisco? I mean, in terms of meeting your teammates, the scheme, the stadium, the facilities, the coaches. What is surprised you the most or, like, I've been, you know, the most pleasant surprise, I guess. Maybe the weather. I mean, the weather is great, but it's these prices on, like, how high.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Like, I didn't know this is what it cost to live on this other side of the world. Everything high. Like, I think when I first got here, I just got here, I didn't. I just tried to get an Uber and I'm just seeing like it's $200 to get from the airport. So I think that was my biggest surprise is when I was looking for a crib and looking for things. I just kept laughing at everybody when they tell them the price like, are you serious? And they don't even, they have no idea what it's like on the East Coast. They don't even know it's so much cheaper.
Starting point is 00:15:19 But so I think that's probably like the biggest thing to me because that's all I complain about every day. You like, wait until you see that? I mean, I don't know if your check came yet, but. I haven't seen it. You know what? Don't look. Hey, I'm really ready to see too. I'm like, I know they're about to take it out here.
Starting point is 00:15:40 That's the thing for me because I, you hear about it, but you don't know until you know. Now I know. I'm really just trying to fly my people down and I'm looking at the prices. Like, y'all, I don't know if y'all down here as much trouble. Yeah, we're going to have to book these out a couple, six months in advance. We can't do this no last minute no more. We ain't doing that no more.
Starting point is 00:16:06 That's my biggest adjustment, for real. Like, that's my biggest adjustment. I'll say this. Look, they got to go. San Francisco's a good airport and San Jose is a good airport, but San Francisco might be easier. Take that hour, Uber. down because that price difference is going to be.
Starting point is 00:16:21 There is. Michelle, San Francisco. Yeah. Because we're not going to go play like that. We're not playing like that. So, you know, it's kind of developed into a little bit of a
Starting point is 00:16:31 heated rivalry between Philly and San Francisco fans and San Francisco players. And I know you've got to caught in the middle of it. Hey, I really am. It's like, I can't say nothing. That's just like
Starting point is 00:16:47 That's funny though It's funny I said I feel bad for this boy I know he and they're like Yeah Like we should have won I'm just like I don't know man
Starting point is 00:17:03 I'm just stay out of it I'm just stay out of it It is what it is man It's what it is bro I'm like we lost too We lost in the Super Bowl If I would have known that Y'all could have had it.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Y'all could have win. If we knew how it was going to go, how the script was, we had let's all. You know, y'all could have won. I would not care. Tell me about that Super Bowl, because we went against that boy in my home's too. And we thought we had.
Starting point is 00:17:31 We had him. We up 10 with seven minutes to go. They didn't only score 10 points. We're feeling good. We didn't strap them. We're like, ass rush is hot. We're like, hey, let's run this clock so we can get to the. And them boys got hot.
Starting point is 00:17:45 but they do it quick too. It's like, I think we was the same way. Like, we went up half, I believe it was up 10. And like I told people, like, Ed, Act just went down before half with his ankle again. He's screaming. So he's like, it's a rap. Like, you know, they've been slow already in the office.
Starting point is 00:18:07 We've been smacking them. So I'm like, he hurt. And they've been slow. I'm like, yeah, it's pretty much. Yeah. It's pretty much. score, then we're about to go out the end and go hunt. Like, this game
Starting point is 00:18:19 over. Man, Pat came out crazy, man. That whole offense was just gone. The offense is gone. Next thing I know, the competitive was coming down. I think so many things went wrong on that game. Like, I don't
Starting point is 00:18:35 know, man. Yeah, Pat had a different dude, though. Pett had a different dude. Yeah, he's 100% different. There ain't nobody who don't play, who's played him, especially in the big games. ain't going to say, oh, yeah, he's just like everybody else. No. Yeah, there's some stuff that you'd be like, bro, what?
Starting point is 00:18:52 Yeah, brother, like, even to, like, the point, like, he just know how to, like, avoid the rush. Like, he just know how to build a pocket. So it's like, it's hard to get to him. He knows how to back up, come forward. Like, yeah, he, man, he can throw on the dime. So it's like, man, yeah, that's a hard dude to go against for real. It is. Yeah, so I talk about here, too, is about that 19.
Starting point is 00:19:12 That's all said. That's true. Everybody still heard about that too. Yeah, we both, that's the same thing. But that heartbreak, so you look, you got that hunger to go get it. Man, what? You got to go against your old boys in week 13. So that's going to be a fun one for you.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Or not, I don't know. But I know them boys in that locker room with you going to be hot. That's going to be one of them ones you just got to go. I'm going to be hot too because I ain't know. they might throw a brick in my head when I come down to Philly. I'm going to be with them that week. It's all that week. Them fans in Philly, boy, is something else.
Starting point is 00:19:57 And what, they do not care that nothing I did these past three years. Yeah, they're going to be coming for me too. So we got to be together. Right, right. We fighting. Yeah, we together. We together. We together.
Starting point is 00:20:17 Well, your quarterback this year, you know, coming off of injury, coming off his rookie year, but still hasn't lost the game in which he started and finished. Tell me, yo, what have you thought about Brock Purdy? Because, you know, obviously you see something. When you come in, you've got certain expectations and certain thoughts about someone, and then you see them execute and go out there and play the game. And you're like, a little different than what I thought it was. Yeah, you know, you really can't tell in camp because it's like, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:41 it's a game in camp. different. Like, you know, you know when it's past, you know when it runs. So I really didn't really know myself. But I think like the first preseason game, just how smooth. They just came out of the first drive, like just so smooth. And like, you know where to go with the ball. Just so, like, just on rhythm. Just, a quick decision maker. Like, for the offense we run, he's like the perfect guy for him. Even in the game, it's just like, I mean, I just seem so much. it's just a bunch of sharpness. Like, he just, he just be yawning.
Starting point is 00:21:16 And he quicker and faster than what you really think. Like, he can avoid, you know, avoid the rush and make the pass on the dime too. So, yeah, he kind of shot me when I came here. And then you look at the offense. Obviously, you came from a really good offense with playmakers with Jalen, Miles Sanders, all day, always open, A.J. Brown, Devonte, Goddard. but you look at this San Francisco offense. You got Christian McCaffrey,
Starting point is 00:21:44 then you got DeVote, you got Kiddle, Brandon Iuk had two touchdowns in the first, I mean, in the game. Then you got Trent at left tackle. You got all this talent. Tell me your impressions of them, especially with Kyle Shanahan's explaining everything in these dang team meetings.
Starting point is 00:22:00 And we get some dolls. Like I said, I'm so blessed that evening. I got a chance to go from like that, the deal with a whole bunch of dolls I'm still like, oh, yes, right now I'm still around. Like, so much talent, bro. Like, like you said, all them playmakers and all of them great players, it's just like, it's a great feeling of just be around.
Starting point is 00:22:22 You just know, like, every game, we got a chance to win the game because we've just got so much talent. Like, that's not everywhere in the lead. And I'm just so happy to be, you know, on the defense and the office and have all that. And Chris Kasserich, you know, his reputation precisely. You know, you know.
Starting point is 00:22:45 Hey, only certain people know. Tell me about how that's been dealing with him every day and how intense he is. I mean, it's really, it is. It's like, I mean, it's one, he's really tense, but at the same time, it's like, you know, some people, it's like, you go some places,
Starting point is 00:23:04 they might not, you know, one person, or they just like this would. certain people. Nah, it's everybody. So you got to respect it. You got to respect it because everybody gets most of me, everybody catches me. But at the end of the day, it's just like he just really want us to win,
Starting point is 00:23:23 like really want us to like be successful or play the best football we can. So it's not really hard like when you see that. Ain't like he cussing you out of none. He just really wants you to be detailed and do your job to the best possible And run to that ball. And run to that ball. And run to that ball. So, yeah, it ain't been hard, though,
Starting point is 00:23:47 just learning from him, though. Like I said, he just won't the best one. So you've got to respect it. Well, this week, y'all got the Rams. And I know you've heard about Kyle and Sean and that rivalry. You know, it's a division game. It's a little bit different, you know, San Francisco fans think, you know, the L.A. So-Fi Stadium is just,
Starting point is 00:24:05 it's just their stadium in LA. You know, they don't come in there, it's going to be deep. Are you excited to go against them? You know, obviously, they got a lot of turnover on their offensive line, but last week they played really good against Seattle. Tell me what you've been seeing about them on film.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Yeah, I just know they're running that ball. They kept running that ball, even when they went down against Seattle, they didn't give up on the run game. I think they had, like, over, I know it was 30-plus rush attempt. So we know we got our work cut out this week. And I said, I'm just kind of new to this, Rob.
Starting point is 00:24:38 I didn't even know coming over here. This was actually the rival over here. Right. I thought it was September and Seattle. I ain't even know that. So I don't know. I'm kind of, you know, I'm hearing about it now. Like, everybody was talking about it yesterday about how big of a robbery this year.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Look, look, if Dallas is on the schedule, it's hate, real hate there. It's old hate. Old hate. For some reason with Philly, that just developed. That just became. That's the Rams. That's pretty much what you're going to deal with in San Francisco. They're the ones that when Dallas comes,
Starting point is 00:25:15 you're going to be like, oh, y'all got a different kind of feeling for these. That's what I'm learning, though, because I mean, yeah, it's different over here. I'm getting used to the West Coast. I know what was going on over here, but I'm learning. I'm learning.
Starting point is 00:25:29 What you're going to appreciate is when you get to November, December, and it's still 75 outside and you ain't got to put no jacket on. That's what they tell me. That's why I can't believe that. I've been in some cold places. So, like, wait. Like, we ain't going to be freezing.
Starting point is 00:25:45 We ain't going to be freezing at practice. Yeah, that's real. I always wanted to say, I always wanted to go play for, like, a warm state team just to see. So, yeah, I definitely don't appreciate that. That's why you want to work hard for that one seat. So you be in January and be like,
