The Herd with Colin Cowherd - The Richard Sherman Podcast - Reaction to Russell Wilson & Broncos losing to Seahawks; Eagles' Darius Slay on NFL's top CBs & WRs

Episode Date: September 14, 2022

You might've heard: Richard Sherman was at the Monday Night Football game between the Seattle Seahawks & Denver Broncos. Richard reacts to Russell Wilson's performance against his former team and ...gives his take on why Pete Carroll, Geno Smith & the Seattle Seahawks are going to be better than people think. After Richard goes off on everything from MNF, he runs through his top 5 teams in the NFL. Philadelphia Eagles corner Darius Slay joins for the second half to his Top 5 wide receivers and cornerbacks in the NFL, the Eagles' Week 1 win vs the Detroit Lions, and their Week 2 matchup vs Justin Jefferson, Kirk Cousins, and the Minnesota Vikings. Richard & Darius question why the Ravens haven't paid Lamar Jackson yet despite Lamar having proven himself as an NFL MVP. And speaking of MVP... Slay and Richard both share the same prediction for this year's winner: Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert. #volume #colincowherd #HerdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.

Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:02:38 Welcome, welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast. Tell me, you were there, you were at the game. I mean, I hate to say you kind of called this. You did call it. We had a clip that was kind of going viral right after the game, right? Mitchell, I know football. And I know football players and I know football teams. Mitchell, the environment was electric.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Yep. The 12s were, like, you know, I haven't been to a game in a while there. You know, I haven't been in a game since I played. But they were electric, and they wanted that one bad. Pete wanted that one bad. The Seahawks wanted that one bad. Russell wanted that one bad. But only one side gets to win.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Mitchell, it was a game. Now, it was back and forth early on. Russell made his big plays. The Seahawks made their big plays. Gino was 17 of 18 to start. Man, it was a good game. It was both sides. It was like, oh, this is good football.
Starting point is 00:03:35 things started to change in the second half. It was the majority of Denver in the second half. Denver was running the ball well. Russell was moving the ball efficiently down the field, but in the red zone, they couldn't get it in. Metro, they could not get the ball into the paint. And that's what matters in the game.
Starting point is 00:03:54 And they're like, well, the running back fumbled in this, and this. O and four in the red zone, you're not going to win a lot of games in this league. And they're like, hey, if the running backs have a fumbling problem, then the running backs have a fumbling problem. That seems like a problem that you need to get addressed. But the Denver Broncos also got a crucial stop on a fourth and one early in the game that could have,
Starting point is 00:04:17 that could have changed the game either way. I thought that was going to be the momentum killer, but they made some huge plays and they missed some huge plays. I mean, Quadres is still kicking himself right now for a missed interception in the end zone. He had it, he had it. He tracked it, found it, got under it, and he just slipped through as one of those hard ones.
Starting point is 00:04:35 that it just slips right through, man. It was a, but Tarek Woolen, rookie. Your boy. Hey, they thought, hey, we're just going to attack him all game. No, you're not. They got the PI. But guess what? The teammates stepped up for him.
Starting point is 00:04:50 They got to stop. Then guess what? They tried him again later. Not twice. One time I'm a rook. Second time, I didn't learn. Get my head around. Man, he was locked down the whole day,
Starting point is 00:05:03 then tried to lower his shoulder in the run game. and then end up going out for a few plays and coming back. He learned that the NFL, you don't just lower your shoulder on everybody. You're still at the corner spot. But he played a good game, man. I was really impressed. Well, Richard, let's focus on the big topic here. I mean, I know you want to focus on the Seahawks, and I respect that.
Starting point is 00:05:23 I mean, heck, I want to talk about the Seahawks, too. But let's talk about Russell Wilson. I mean, you've been in this situation before. You come back and you called it, man. As soon as the game starts, as soon as the game starts, they're going to show you love on Twitter. They're going to give you love
Starting point is 00:05:38 in the comments section on Instagram. But as soon as the lights go on, as soon as that ball kicks off, heck, even before the ball is kicked off. As soon as you're in that stadium, it's a different environment. And those fans gave him hell. They didn't even give him the cheers
Starting point is 00:05:51 that I thought they would give him. They booed him from the beginning. Were you surprised by that? Like, honestly, the reception that Russell got? I was surprised. I was surprised that they booed him from the beginning. I thought he would get the ovation. they cheer and then boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, but they boo from the get.
Starting point is 00:06:07 So, hey, you know, that's different, but here's what it is. But he still threw for 340. You know, he threw for 340. He was moving the ball, slanging it around the yard, like, only threw one touchdown. They didn't want him to throw in the Reds on, at least questions. But fourth and five, game on the line in Seattle, everybody's like, oh, man, this is another crazy Russell Wilson, fourth quarter, quarter come back, what do you do? Now, there's two sides to the coin. Like, hey, they could
Starting point is 00:06:42 have put it in his hands and then who you got to blame. But the timeout, there was the Monday night telecast and you could see, you could see Peyton Manning saying time out, time out, time out, time out, time out. You know the difference between Russell and Peyton Manning is Russell does not have the power to call that time out without the sideline. Peyton Manning can call that timeout without the sideline. He don't need the coach to tell him. He don't need no signal. Tom Brady can call that time out without anybody telling him, hey, call a time out.
Starting point is 00:07:12 He's the coach on the field. He has that kind of respect from his coaches, that kind of leadership, that kind of pool. Hey, time out. We need to talk about this. Payton, time out. We need to talk about this. Drew Breeze, time out. We need to talk about this.
Starting point is 00:07:25 I can keep Aaron Rogers. Time out. We need to talk about this. Mahomes, time out. We need to talk about this. The list is going on. Jerry golf, timeout. We got to talk about this.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Jared golf, you need to go talk. You need to go talk to the coach. He'll call the timeout. But that's what people, people are getting upset. They're like, hey, the coach, the coach, the coach. Certain quarterbacks, you blame the coach. Certain situations, certain quarterbacks, you blame the quarterback. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:52 And if that was any of those guys who didn't call a time out in those situations, you're not talking about the coach. You're not talking about, hey, why didn't the floor do that? Why didn't such, such do that? You're talking about why didn't Payton just call time out right there? Why didn't Aaron? Why didn't Tom just call time out? Like Tom mismanaged the situation.
Starting point is 00:08:09 No, this time they're saying, hey, no, no, no, no. Russ didn't mismanaged the situation. The coach mismanaged the situation. I don't know, Mitch. I don't know, 48 million. Now, now the situation where he kicked a field goal instead of taking a shot, that's on the coach. Like, hey, that's a bad call. They're not playing a mile high, Rich.
Starting point is 00:08:33 They're playing in Seattle. I mean, McManus was one of six from beyond 60 yards or something like this. Statistically, you're not kicking the football. But statistically, you're not throwing the football on the one yard line when you got Marshawn Lynch either. So, you know, that's why coach is coach. And sometimes you question them. I mean, Nathaniel Hackett's got a lot of people scratching their heads this morning, a lot. He got a lot of people scratching their heads because he could have took that off his
Starting point is 00:09:00 If he would have let Russell go up to the line, play a play, good, better and different with the result, he would have a lot less stress on his back right now. But instead, he said, hey, you know what, I'm going to take this off of him. I'm going to put this on me and have McManus. McMahon's, who's a really good kicker. Like, that's not, let's not downplay McManus. No. There aren't many kickers good from plus 62 yards. And I think he's one for eight past 60. Like, one for eight past 60, that's not a slight to him. That's, it's hard to do. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Like, that would have been the second longest kick in NFL history. And that's what you want to go to for the game. Like, where are the analytics people to get in his ear? Like, hey, coach, coach, coach, coach, coach, coach. Not a good idea. Just let Russell play another play. Let's just run an option route in the slot to Jared Judy and have him sit down and pitch and catch and get another play.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Let's just run Javonte Williams and let's just get five yards and let's get another play. Like, they just threw it to him in the flat, broke a tackle. He got nine yards. Literally, that should have showed you something. But first game coaching, first year coach, tough. But, Richard, in the world in this era of analytics, like you said, statistically speaking, analytically speaking, there is no way in the world kicking the ball from 64 yards in front of the 12th man on the road is a good coaching decision. I could understand it if you're at home, at mile high, thinner air, all that stuff,
Starting point is 00:10:31 ball travels further. I get it. But to me, especially the circumstances, Russell Wilson at home, first time ever, like, give him the opportunity. I know Russell's a team guy probably isn't going to voice a whole lot, but my goodness, what do you think is going through his head? He got $48 million. They paid him $250 over the life of the contract. I know what he's thinking. You got to get me the shot.
Starting point is 00:10:57 You got to die by the hand that you paid. Like, hey, live by, die by. And they weren't willing to die by his hand. They were willing to go with the kick. And that's a conversation that I'm not going to get to ask Nathaniel Hackett. I'm not going to be it to ask him. What went into that decision? Was it analytics?
Starting point is 00:11:14 Was it trust? Was it rapport? Was it something you saw on the field? Because there were certain things he said that leave me kind of cringing. Because he was like, hey, the offense wasn't moving the ball well. And I didn't trust it. You don't say that. The offense wasn't moving the ball.
Starting point is 00:11:29 They just got nine yards to play before. People are like, oh, Sherm, you're just biased. You're just against them. No, I'm not. I'm just calling a football game. They did get nine yards. He threw for 340. He did not win the game.
Starting point is 00:11:42 And this was a team that everybody wrote off. The Seattle Seahawks, they're saying they're going to win two to three games this year, maybe four. Like they're going to draft in the top five of the draft. That's what people were saying before this game. Well, Richard, the good thing about this podcast, we have historical clips. And guess who called it?
Starting point is 00:12:00 You said there are going to be a competitive team that's going to be hovering right around 500 when this is all said and done. We saw that on the field, man. I mean, Gino Smith gives you a good game manager. Like you said, he played the game of his life. You can tell he's matured. You can tell he's ready for this.
Starting point is 00:12:13 He's not going to be an explosive over-the-top guy. I'm sure D.K. and Tyler Lockett are going to get frustrated at times. But if he does not turn the ball over, they get my boy Kenneth Walker the third and Rashad Penny Rowland. This team could be a force in the West and might, you know, again, be in that 500 mark.
Starting point is 00:12:29 They may sneak into the playoffs on people. Like, a game like this is a confidence builder in so many ways. They started two rookie tackles. They started a rookie corner. Like, you don't go into a game starting. I think it was the first time in like 10 years or 12 years. I think the Jacksonville Jaguars started two rookie tackles at one point. They did not go this well.
Starting point is 00:12:50 They did not win the game when they did it. And so, like, to go out there and have the trust in these guys, that Pete had in the rookie tackles, in the rookie corner, and they played the way they did. Quandre Diggs played. The guys who you expect to play well, played well. D.K., Lockett, they caught the past that were there. And it was so beautiful and so cool to see Gina just show that, hey, don't judge me off of what I've done in the past.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I've gotten better. I'm keeping my eyes down field. Yes, there's pressure in my face. Yes, I'm standing in, taking the pressure, and still delivering accurate passes on the touchdown pass. on both touchdown fasts. There was pressure in his face. Cool.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Hey, the pocket collapsed. He didn't just take off and run every time. Sure, when the opportunity presented itself, he took off and ran. But it was just cool to see his maturity and his growth as a football player, as a quarterback. And man, now, this situation helps Pete Carroll more than people will ever understand. Because when he traded away Russell Wilson, everybody's sitting there like, you're in rebuild mode. Your team is going to be bad.
Starting point is 00:13:54 there's no way you're beating them in the first game. You just hope he doesn't blow you guys out and really take his revenge. And you know what Pete Carroll says? He says we're not in the rebuild mode. We're not. We don't get in rebuild mode. We're still a competitive team. We're going to find a way to win and we'll show you guys what we mean.
Starting point is 00:14:10 That's game one of him showing you what he means. It seems a little bit. Well, first off, there's a little bit of an irony in the Seahawks draft in two offensive tackles back to back. And that's all Russell wanted was offensive line help. So that's one thing. And then second, to your point, Rich, I mean, Pete Carroll is proving, you know, he's proven that he can win at all with whatever talents in front of him.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Unlike the conversation we had on the last podcast, Bill Velichick, who's now struggling without Tom Brady. I mean, what does this do for Pete Carroll's legacy? He's proving that he can win with whatever's put in front of him, the best man plays philosophy, and it's working again. Well, it's a long, it's a long battle about that. It's going to be a back and forth. but round one goes to Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:14:56 That's round one. Now, sure, again, Russell has a long season ahead of him. They can turn it around. They can win the division, win a Super Bowl. Then the entire war goes to Russell Wilson. You know, it's first to the Super Bowl, or if neither one of them gets to a Super Bowl, then it's whoever got the better, the more success going forward.
Starting point is 00:15:15 But the difference is Russell is going to compete in a FC West with Justin Herbert, who's not getting, who's not getting any worse. He's getting better every week. His team is getting better every week. They got Khalil Mack who just had three sacks in the game. Joey Bosa had one and a half. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:15:33 You talk about that old line needs to be secure. They better find it and figure it out soon because there was a lot of pressure in Russell Wilson's face and they were not facing Khalil Mac and Joey Bosa. You know, the guy Seattle put out there are showing and making a name for themselves and we're making a name for themselves in that game and it was awesome to see.
Starting point is 00:15:50 But AFC West, Chris Jones is still there. Chris Jones, Patrick Mahomes, they're going to put up points. You're not going to get away with the game scoring 16 points and thinking you're going to pull out a win. They had a chance to win that game. They will not in other AFC West games. He doesn't play defense. So you can't blame him for what happens to the defense, but they're going to have to tighten that up back there. And Richard, you can't, I mean, like you said, the Seahawks were picked last in the division by a lot of writers, a lot of so-called experts in this field.
Starting point is 00:16:17 When you go out the gates and lose that opener to, you know, a perceived bad team in this league, League, good luck when you're squaring up, looking for that extra win late in the season because you're going to be going against the likes of Mahomes and Herbert and, like you said, the Raiders. So good luck, man. I mean, he's going to see a preview of what the conference and the divisions like this Thursday night with you at the helm. Week one of Richard Sherman on Amazon Prime and Thursday night football for all of those listening right now. So make sure you tune in and see my boy. I know he's going to represent himself well. I can't wait. So, This week's power rankings, I got to start with the Buffalo Bills.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I got to start with the Buffalo Bills. They're up top. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are two. Their defense is hitting on all cylinders. The receiving corps is hitting on all cylinders. Tom Brady is still Tom Brady. Three has to be the Kansas City Chiefs. They look like they're supposed to look.
Starting point is 00:17:12 We'll see how they do this Thursday against the Chargers. Who are my number four? The Chargers. The Chargers. I believe in it. Khalil Mack is a difference maker for that organization. three sacks in the first game, I think him and Joey Bosa
Starting point is 00:17:25 are going to be a lethal, lethal, lethal, lethal combination. I can't wait to see it. And then number five, my San Francisco 49ers are going to become in fifth. I know they lost to the Chicago Bears. I know people are going to be upset with it. But I still think this team is one of the most talented teams in the league.
Starting point is 00:17:42 They'll victim to circumstance and weather, inclement weather. I think they'll bounce back the rest of the year and have a great season. That's about top five. It could change at any time. But it might end up being. I like the top five. I like the top four. I think where a lot of folks are going to be, you know, questioning you is at number five. This year in the NFL, it seems like there's a lot of parity after the top four dogs, as Dan Campbell called them, the guys that drag their fellow teams out to the abyss, those four teams. But number five, San Francisco 49ers, I don't agree with you. I don't know how you put that after a loss, but God bless you. You are a loyal one. And we'll just, we'll see how the fans react to that. Yeah, I know how they're going to react
Starting point is 00:18:24 But we'll see how the season comes together Because usually in Metro I find a way to be right You're not wrong often Imagine an Olympics Where doping is not only legal But encouraged It's the enhanced games
Starting point is 00:18:37 Some call it grotesque Others say it's unleashing human potential Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all Embed it in the games And with the athletes for a full year Within probably 10 days I'd put on 10 pounds
Starting point is 00:18:51 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions,
Starting point is 00:19:10 my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast. the Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations

Starting point is 00:20:03 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:20:25 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Then you're finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:20:49 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week we got my boy, Big Play Slay in the building. What up, brother? It was good.
Starting point is 00:21:08 It was good. You know, another day in paradise, enjoying it. That game yesterday was wild. Oh, my wild. He needed to win that, though. He needed to win that. He needed to win it, Slay. He needed to win it.
Starting point is 00:21:20 He did not get it done. And everybody's like, it's the coach fault. He should have called time out. He should have did this. I hear you. Yeah. I hear you. He needed to win that one.
Starting point is 00:21:31 He sure did. But I'll talk about you and your Eagles. You came back to Detroit. I know that was crazy for you. Man, great feeling, man. It's always good to go back to Detroit, man. Seven years there. And, you know, go back there twice, get a dub.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Always a good feeling. Right, right. They made it a dog fight for y'all boys, though, didn't it? Yeah, they did. And, you know, they stuck to their game plan, you know, so it was kind of surprising, you know, as in it was up that, what, 31-14, they still was running the ball, still doing a game plan. And they brought them back into the game, man. So, but we've got to just correct a lot of mental errors and stuff like that, man, because, honestly, the game should have been part of 40-something or something. Right, right, right, right. You know, you know, week one, you always got some stuff to clean up.
Starting point is 00:22:16 I thought, you know, I looked at the score because, you know, they don't let everybody get it. every game. So, you know, you can catch the red zone and stuff. But I saw her 31-14 and I was like, okay, they're walking away with it. And they, you're saying they was just running the ball and sticking to it and just- Stick into their game plan. That's crazy. That's crazy. How'd you feel about your defense? I mean, y'all got them hogs up front. Yeah, we did what we're supposed to do. We came out as in, you know, aggressive, how they supposed to have started. How we posted had started, you know, first 15, they ran the first drive was, you know, we didn't know what it was going to do. But after that, we settled down, kept stopping them.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Our offense got the lead. You know, we stole the possession with us coming back out of the second half. And then we're supposed to just, at that time, we supposed to have stuck down their necks and call it a day. And we're going to talk it up. And, you know, we didn't do that. So, you know, we just went to the film room, figured it out what we did wrong, and I corrected a little mental errors.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Yep, yep. How are you feeling about your new addition? All the ways open, A.J. Brown was out there eating. Man, straight dog. Right. Straight dog, man. And this is what he lived up for, man. He knows he wanted to be recognized that wasn't the best in the game.
Starting point is 00:23:19 And he is becoming that, and he continues to keep working. But, man, he's a dog, man. He a guy that just, you line up anybody in front of me, I'm trying to destroy him. Big dude, big physical dude. He made so good after the catch. It's just ridiculous. Hey, you know what I, man, to see him in person that close up, because I never played against him.
Starting point is 00:23:35 This is my first time actually seeing him live up. It's a different animal out there with that dark viz. He looked like a swole back man. A swore back. I'm through. Hey, your boy, Jaila, Hur. was out there cooking too now. Come on now, hey, you know, he got a lot of proof.
Starting point is 00:23:51 And he understands it. And, you know, that's what's good about him, man. He understands, we got going on. They surround him with great reference, man. He's ready to execute, man. He got a chip on the shoulder, man, because, you know, he got a lot of dollars. And he always been a daughter coming from Alabama, had a transfer from Alabama, go to Oklahoma and prove his.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And, you know, he loved to be in that position. Right. So that's why he always has sealed. So he always keeps getting better and better each year, man. So I'm so happy for the kid. Bro. bro, how did they let y'all get Bradbury? Like, first off, second off and third off,
Starting point is 00:24:21 that's just something. Like, people don't even be like, it's like they don't even watch corners these days. Y'all going to let him walk? I honestly, when they first came out, when I saw it on the Twitter news, talking about the Giants been to get ready to release him and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:24:33 I said, man, they can't release him. He's arguably the second best player on the defense. Right. Because you know, you got full order on the D-line, and he got him. So I said, in the way, they letting Bradbury go. And when I saw it happen, And I'm like, all our brothers have four pits.
Starting point is 00:24:47 You know, dang, they could have slid into the pro bowl again. Could have slid in easy. Easily back to back. And now, you know, I was blessed to get him. So I'm happy for him, man, because he's teaching me a lot too. And, you know, he's real good with that sentient step. Oh, yeah, he's a dog with it. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Hey, hey, hey, you got better with it too now. I got better with it. I got better with it for show. Hey, hey, speaking of that, there's a lot of talk, top corners in the league. And I just, I just hate when I hear it and they not mention in my. boy big play. And it frustrated, like, in your opinion, who, because we're going to talk about you because you're one of the top corners in the league as we're going to get that out of the way. That's what I got to stop. I got to stop being a little, you know, little, little chill.
Starting point is 00:25:27 I got to let me talk to my jump because I know what's up. You know, people should know what's up. And that's for me not just being a good talking, man. I just be like to just play ball and just have fun. But, man, there ain't too many people better than me in this game. No, it's not. It's really not. And so who you think the top corner is in the game outside of you right now? J.C. Jackson. That boy, J.C. don't get enough love ever. My honest opinion, I thought he was the best one last year.
Starting point is 00:25:52 I thought he was the best for the last couple years. I thought he did it. Last two years for me. You know, I'm going to just go last two. And after that, I got war. I love war game. I love Xavier Howard. You know, guys that I know the defense they're in playing a lot of men.
Starting point is 00:26:09 And for them boys, they always have six to seven picks every year. It's tough. Talk to them. Slay. It's too tough. Like, I've been in the system. I know what they asked me to do. Zero man every play. And for JC and Xavier, how would it be doing what they're doing? It's crazy. And people just don't understand it. That's what I don't understand. I don't understand how you didn't get the money. You know, when they were talking about J.C. Jackson getting 16, I said, I was, I was like,
Starting point is 00:26:33 I'm saying, he didn't, no offense to none, but who his agent is, but he didn't beat my contract. My contract was done three years ago. Right. Right. I'm saying, I thought he had 17 bucks. in three years and two in two yes and two yes
Starting point is 00:26:48 I'm like what jac's he thinking I'm like maybe I'm like okay he might be just you know bag hungry or something but I don't know
Starting point is 00:26:57 but he could have easily got 22 he could have easily I thought he was about to break the record I said somebody playing straight man coverage every play
Starting point is 00:27:07 got 17 books and going number ones and going number he got number ones And you know the Patriots ain't playing none of that. They play, hey, man, man, man, man. You got man, man. Man.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Nothing else. Nothing else. And he got 17 of them. People are like, oh, it's tip balls, it's this, that. No, you don't get 17 of them by accident or luck. Not by accident. And so that's why he's the best. I hope he played because we got Chargers Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:27:35 I'm doing Amazon this Thursday. We got Chargers Chiefs, so I'm hoping he played. Yeah, me too. He's nice, man. He's been the best corner of the last. past two years for sure. I agree. I agree. And that boy, Zay, same way. In Miami, they've been playing zero since. I don't know when. I'll tell my straight zero, man. And guess how many books he got in the past two years? Right. He got like, 17, 17, 17. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:59 But that's what it's about at the corner spot. And you out there getting books, scoring on fumble returns and playing offense. Like, they're not giving you the credits. Like, And it's because they just surprised a guy that's 31 years old still at this elite level, you know? That's not fair. I mean, your country boys, y'all move and y'all built different. I ain't going to tell you. I'm from California.
Starting point is 00:28:19 I don't know what they feed y'all out there. I don't know what's in your stool or in your bathwater. But at 31, you still moving like you're 21. Yeah, man, I've been, I've been, I've been saying, telling myself, like, man, I've been to pro bowl for all to five years. All-Pro. Should have been all-pro again. You know, they'd be tripping on that.
Starting point is 00:28:37 And, you know, I've been a probo. I don't realize that the fact that when it comes to the who the top corner is about, it's basically who the media want to talk about the most. And, you know, and I never approached the media as in a way to be in disrespect for nobody as a corner, but ain't five people better than me at the corner position. Come on now. It's not, you know. I don't, I don't did it all. I don't did the traveling. I done did the zeros.
Starting point is 00:29:00 I done did the quarters player. I don't did every coverage you want to do, and I didn't sell it each one on. Right. And for some people, be like, ah, Slay, Slay ain't top. 10 slaying this and then that. They're not watching the tapes, Slay. What tape y'all watching? They're not watching the tapes, like.
Starting point is 00:29:14 What tape? Please tell me what tape. I ain't still getting paid 17 M's at 31 years old just because it's just. Talk wrong. Come on, man. I ain't get paid 17 M. They're not talking about a cap casualty here. They're not talking about a cat.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Hey, what we're going to do with Slay next year? He earned this money. I earned that money. Yeah. Come on, man. They be just, they be talking out of their heads. Man, I'd be thinking people to be scared to acknowledge who really is a top dog in this game because they're scared.
Starting point is 00:29:40 No, it's just who they're talking about. And that's why I'm happy that I'm getting to be in the media space right now. Because I'm a carter like I see it. I'm not going to let them just keep saying, hey, this dude, if it ain't on tape and don't talk to me about it. If it don't show me on tape, then don't, don't tell me who the best or who the top or who this. It got to be the tape. Got to be the tape.
Starting point is 00:30:00 I'm trying to tell you, people be making pro bows, all pros. And I don't be knowing how. I'm like, what do I need to be doing? Like, I'd be like, come on, man. I know I was in Detroit for seven years, but Jesus, let's talk about play. Right. Well, just keep strapping, play, and I'll make sure they're looking at you this year. You keep doing what you've been doing.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Got to. So who y'all got next, this week? Oh, man, we got, we got Minnesota. It's up. It's up. It's up. Already, I'm already. I've been locked down since I got the schedule from that boy from week two.
Starting point is 00:30:32 Yeah, Kevin O'Connell, hey, they're not going to just let you find him like that, say. I know. I've been, man, I watched the fan. That boy, third down in the slot, third down. Oh, my gosh, that boy dangerous. Right, that boy is dangerous. And they're going to put him everywhere. They're going to say, hey, where's, where's Lay at? Keep him away from him, but we still get him in the ball.
Starting point is 00:30:51 Hey, let's keep him away. So they're going to get him away. We got to get it done. But, man, that boy's so good. He's just second best receiver right now. At the end, he might finish the first. Right, right. That's what he was saying.
Starting point is 00:31:04 That's what he was saying. Who are the top five receivers for you right now? Let's go there. Come on, it is. Right now it's for show, Tay. Tay's up there. Cheetah. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:31:17 That boy in Cincinnati, got to be in discussion. You ain't? You know, I'll go. He was just fine. I got him at five because I got digs at four, then him at five. Okay. Because he's just a different breed, too.
Starting point is 00:31:28 But, you know, a lot of guys can do it too. But, um, those guys, that's just special, though, man. Them boys, them boys at the catch. I like guys after the catch. Right. They get, they get real. active. They do get active.
Starting point is 00:31:39 They turn straight to running backs and everything. Look, look, everybody going to get bad because Cooper Cup ain't in there for you, but it's just, it's just a different kind of. It's a different kind of thing. You know, I ain't able to see Cook like that, you know, because Cooper don't line at X. And I believe Cooper's a dog for sure, because he compete great after the catch. But I ain't going to discredit his game, but you line him at X for 60 reps.
Starting point is 00:32:04 I don't know if you're getting 1,800 yards. Right, 1800 is going to be hard to come by. He got 1800 last year. He got 1800. Yeah. And so, hey, out there in Vegas is still doing what he do. Them boys, look, I felt bad for Yuck, and I got to talk to him, Yung Asante, because he ain't never went against him.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Never did. You ain't never win against him. First time you deal with it, it's stress. It's stress. I'm telling him, I'm just like, good Lord. And that's when I had to be in Detroit when there was zero man. I said, coach, look here. I don't ask for much, but you got to give me a little hole player right now.
Starting point is 00:32:42 You got to give me some. I ain't scared to ask for help. Right. You need a little hole player. Please, because he's killing these slats on me. Boy, hey, and you bite the sled, he's going nine. And, nah, I'm talking to sound. I can't take away both coaches.
Starting point is 00:32:55 He's too good at this slack. Right. Give me that low hold player, coach. I ain't going to be played with you. Get it to me. I said, hey, you got to give me something. You got to give me something. Like, hey, people got their weaknesses and all that.
Starting point is 00:33:07 His is very hard to find. Hard to find. The only thing I could have found about him when I was playing against him was I got time to come back to the ball because he don't come back to the ball. Right, right. He had just let it fall.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Because he went so much off the line of scrimmage that he got so much separation. He just never always drove back. So I was like, all right, just make sure you can just finish. Just finish. I was preaching myself just finished to him. Because he'll win a good bit of him off the line releases. Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Oh, no question. Hey, that's why I wasn't even playing with him off the line. I'm like, hey, hurry up and get into your route. Then we'll get to this. Then we'll get to discuss what we're going to do after that. But at the least, you can win this. Right. He's going to find a way to win that.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:34:08 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. Starting point is 00:35:20 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. But man, it's crazy these quarterbacks nowadays, too. But these boys are just cooking. Man, look, yeah, man, I know we got people that got already expectation that I did a lot of things. And you don't want to put them in front of guys because then I got a great resume.
Starting point is 00:36:35 But that boy, Justin Herbert and that boy, Josh Allen, them boys are just different. All right. And that boy, Patrick Mahon. I ain't know what it is. Yeah, we don't leave Patrick. I know. Because he, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:36:47 I'm just talking about the one that he already got him. He already got here. But these guys done, like Justin, and played against him last year, he threw that ball across the field, far hash to Mike Waze on me. I'm talking about a dot. I said, okay, you're in my respect. I understand what you're doing. You say, wait a minute.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. I like what you're doing. I like what you're doing. He's dangerous. He dangerous.
Starting point is 00:37:11 Oh, I got a two for you. Beside my quarterback, I want my quarterback to win in the tee. But beside my quarterback, I think he's the first one up. That boy, Josh Allen is, is, he didn't turn, he didn't turn the whole corner on him, boy. He's turned the whole corner. And he, he is cooking, he confident. They're doing their thing. They somehow got Von Miller over there.
Starting point is 00:37:30 I don't know how. Bro. They did. They just be, I'll be trying to tell people. We be thinking people who just kind of just fall off trees every day. Right. They don't. They don't.
Starting point is 00:37:41 They don't. You're not going to find another Baum Miller somewhere. You're not. You're not. People like, oh, he's older. Don't let the age, age affects some people differently. Differently. Definitely.
Starting point is 00:37:51 It don't, it don't fit him. It ain't affected him like. He's still whaling and he's still like he's 20-something years old. Right. And then Khalil Matt. You trade that away. and then put him with Joey Bosa. He's going to be arguably next up for the defense of player again.
Starting point is 00:38:10 Bro, he had three sacks in the first game. Three. And people think he's, man, look, yeah, I'd be saying the same stuff. I'm like, I don't understand this because I'm in their position, but people just don't cherish and stuff like that. He can't let stuff like that. And you trade them twice. First ball, Brails made it for states, let him go first in.
Starting point is 00:38:27 Right. And the Bears, you go get him. He comes to y'all in the first game a year. Give y'all strip sat. on Aaron Rogers and everything. I think he had a touchdown. Win the game for you. Just make it hard for the AFC then.
Starting point is 00:38:41 And speaking of quarterbacks, why they don't want to pay my boy Lamar? Like, that's what I ain't understand. How you got an MVP candidate and don't want to pay the man? Come on, man. It got to be something to it,
Starting point is 00:38:54 but that ain't right there. Y'all don't change the whole offense to be around them. How you don't want to pay the man, y'all don't change the offense for? It's like, it's like, it's not even an MVP candidate. The man didn't want it. Wanted?
Starting point is 00:39:07 Like, they won it. On the rookie contract, they won MVP. I wouldn't know how to that. I know you. See? They know not to play with you like that. They know not to give me nothing like that. I think, I think Lam messed itself up with he was trying to be saying as he trying to be
Starting point is 00:39:23 a real, he's trying to be professional and saying like, hey, I ain't worried about the money. The money, no, no, you should have been demanding it. I know you tried doing the right respectful way because, you know, he rolled But sometimes that, they got to go to the side when it comes to business. Right. It got to go to the side when they're talking to business. I'm talking about big business.
Starting point is 00:39:40 I'm talking about 200Ms of a business. Not knowing. Right. Life changing business. Right. Life changing business. And then you got Dak and the Cowboys in your division. Oh, man, they didn't got my boy, Dag.
Starting point is 00:39:54 The bucks ain't playing. But they never do. They never do. One thing I tell you about that, Todd, ain't going to let you play back there a lot too long. He put this in the house. Right. You got a new left tackle who ain't Tyrus Smith? Let me go see body.
Starting point is 00:40:07 Let me see what he'll do. I got Shaq ready. Right. Right. All right. You got them this year? No. No.
Starting point is 00:40:15 No. No. No one. You don't know I saw him twice last year. Playoffs and in the record season. Those boys are different. Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:21 And I'm young. Man, that linebacker court is just ridiculous. I ain't never seen that group of linebackers that fast in my life. Goh three. And then LaBonte as smart as they come? And then I'm talking my sideline and sideline. and they smacking everything moving. But, bro, yeah, imagine these corners having to deal with Julio,
Starting point is 00:40:38 then Mike. And Huli, did you watch the game? Yes. That boy, do he look like Julio? Come, I'm trying to, you know, people want to say, and he was messed up into it. He's just chilling. He was chilling. He let y'all know, when I'm done with this, I already know where he's, he already
Starting point is 00:40:54 had the idea where he's going. I got to, he already knew he was going to Tampa Bay. Where he was going to be a creation. He already had that idea. No question. And watched, I told, I told him, I said, that Julio will come out here and look, healthy as he ever been.
Starting point is 00:41:05 That boy, that boy is out there looking like young Julio. Y'all tell you, running right past, folks. Come on, he ran almost 21 miles yesterday. And that corner was sitting there like thinking, Julio, oh, Julio, oh. Julio, oh. Julio ain't old. He ain't.
Starting point is 00:41:21 He ain't. He's Julio for a reason. Right. Come on, man. He's all over him for a reason. That man, he can put him with Tom. They just let Tom just have whatever he won't. Whatever he won't.
Starting point is 00:41:33 God. And then Mike Evans, ever underrated. Ever underrated. He's the most consistent receiver you can ask for. Right. That boy, he's going to have a thousand. Every year.
Starting point is 00:41:44 Every year. And if he paid 15 years, he'll have 15,000 yards. Right. Because he'll have 1,000 yards every year. Every time. Every time. He's going to be the quietest gold jacket getting receiver ever to play this game.
Starting point is 00:41:57 And the most unselfish dude, I know. Right. Right. The only care about who you bring. he just do his job and do his role. Right, right. He talks to him to catch it. He catches him.
Starting point is 00:42:09 He ain't complaining. He ain't complaining. Nothing. I ain't going to be a dog out there with it. No question. No question. So, yeah, your body feeling good. Your team good.
Starting point is 00:42:18 You're happy about your secondary. Y'all look good, man. What's the ceiling for your secondary, for your defense? Man, we just got a hot ceiling, man. Because, you know, as I say, you see what we have. You know, they put a lot of money into the defense, so the defense expect to be real damn good. That's the point of it.
Starting point is 00:42:34 And that's our goal to as an individual as a defense. We want to be the best, you know. So defense wins championships. And for us to win, we got to play good on the defensive side. And we got to stop guys from scoring. Because if our offense is considering yourself putting itself up 30 points a game, that should be light. It should be light for us. But we got to just execute.
Starting point is 00:42:53 So we just got to, you know, be detailed and I always got to play together. You know, nobody bigger than the team. You know how they get, man. generation and get all about the bad, the bad, the bag. But if you look at it, when you win, you get bags. I told them, I talked to my young guys the other day. We were talking about the Seattle defense. I said, Seattle had a defense with a lot of guys that was undrafted, but a lot of guys
Starting point is 00:43:15 got paid. Right. Every point in that played opposite of Shirm got paid. Brian Maxwell, big money. You know, he might have been paying out how everybody wanted to be, but we're winning. Right. They won't win in coaches, so they go brain winning players here. So I told people.
Starting point is 00:43:30 man, if y'all on one year deals, bro, don't we worry about trying to get no bad. It's all right. If we win, you'll get a bag. You're going to get a bag. You're going to get a bag. Slay. Did I see the C on your chair, huh? Come on, man, that first time.
Starting point is 00:43:42 Come on, now. Tell me how that feel. Man, I was, like, almost in tears. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Because I've never been in the captain. I'm always been a goofy guy, goofy laughing guy. Everybody feel like Slay don't take a lot of stuff serious, but, you know, I compete at a high level.
Starting point is 00:43:56 But if you know me as a person, you know, I approach the field with respect. I go out there and go hard for each and one of my teammates. And for the teammates to see that kind of stuff, man, here, I appreciate it, man. I was almost like, dang, this is my first time being the captain and I'm a year 10. Like, what? It's a perfect time for me. I first hit double digits, first hit team captain. You know, just feel appreciated, man.
Starting point is 00:44:17 And, yeah, I learned a good bit for my vets, man. My vets taught me a lot. And they always told me to be myself. And, man, myself finally paid off with me, having a big seal on my chest. I'm loving it. I'm excited for it, man. Man, I'm getting a tear out of it. about it. You deserve it, man. You deserve it. I've been working hard, man, for a long,
Starting point is 00:44:34 long time, man. I finally got the recognition as a leader in a different way. Instead of being like a vocal guy, a guy that's in the middle yelling and cussing folks. I'm more of a guy that just go out there, leave one way, play hard, run to the ball, try to make plays. Just try to leave by example the best way I can. And they appreciate that I do that and I handle that way. So they gave me to see you. I'm, man, I'm thankful for it. Bro, bro, I'm so happy for you. It's so awesome to see, bro. Yeah, I mean, Sometimes it's just that. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:45:01 It's giving that wisdom to the young dudes that you were doing. You know what I mean? You're giving them that game and they're respecting and appreciating the game. You're giving them the extra time you spend it because, as you know, every vet ain't like that. There's some good ones and there are some dudes who get in the building and lead the building. They don't say nothing to nobody. They just do their work. And I respect that too.
Starting point is 00:45:17 You know what I do. Right. But you got that seat this year. Oh, hey, Captain Slate. Captain Slate. Captain Slate. I told him, man, I'm the captain now. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:45:29 I ain't mad at it. Yeah, yeah, man, I'm real thankful for it. Man, I'm happy for you. How much longer you got? I can honestly go for easily five more, but am I going five more? No, sir. Don't need to. I don't need to, man.
Starting point is 00:45:44 I'm comfortable, man. I'm blessed. Man, I can't wait to be at one of these days. Retire. I play with my kids, go to the kids game, be a little DB specialist kind of dude. There you go. Because I'm real big with high school with high school, with high school kids and stuff like that, working out with them.
Starting point is 00:45:58 So that's something. I want to do when I'm done. I'm going to get on a little podcast, too, because I'm going to be the same way how you're talking. Like, I ain't a hole back. You know what I got to, I'm going to let them know, like, hey, brother, nah, this is the better DB for it. It's the better safety.
