Starting point is 00:02:30 The volume. Welcome to the Richard Sherman podcast. I'm your host, Richard Sherman, here with my guy Mitch Eisenstein. Football is a crazy game, Mitchell. Richard, it's another Sunday. You're sicken back and joining the game, watching it on your couch. Drama occurs all over the NFL. Let's start, let's start from the top.
Starting point is 00:02:59 I mean, we had a big, big game this week. Everyone was talking about it. Potential AFC championship game. you know, preview here. The Bills against the Chiefs. Bills comes out on top. I mean, what stands out to you, Rich, about this game? Well, Mitchell, it was two great teams.
Starting point is 00:03:18 I didn't expect it to be as close. I didn't expect the Chiefs to take it down to the wire and make Buffalo drive down the game for the game like they did in the playoffs. But, you know, you got to give credit to Andy Reed and the enemy and their staff and their defensive staff. You know, they found a way to keep Josh Allen and the boys in check. I mean, Stefan Diggs still had a game.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Gabe Davis still had a game. You know, let's not get crazy here. But we saw the value of Von Miller. He's why they brought Von in, you know, two sex. Von, ghost, ghost, you're going to bring Von in. He going to do it. Toron Johnson with a game-seiling interception. That was huge.
Starting point is 00:03:55 That's a difference in the game. This game always comes down to it. But Ju-Jew Smith-Schuster had his best game as Kansas City Chief. You give a lot of credit for them. They're spreading the ball around. Patrick Mahon's continued to do what he does, but some of those plays came back to bite him in the butt. You saw earlier in the season,
Starting point is 00:04:13 he scrambled to his right, threw back across his body to Jericho McKinnett for a touchdown earlier in the season on the goal line. And on an almost exact same play, he had done some crazy magic and threw a touchdown. This time, he used that magic a little bit too often, threw it to the back of the end zone interception. And this is a game you can't waste trips to the red zone.
Starting point is 00:04:33 He had to come out with some kind of points. wasn't able to, I think that was the difference in the game. Richard, I mean, it came down to the wire again. You thought, you thought again, hey, Mahomes got the final possession here. He's just going to figure out a way. And the Bill's D finally got the better of them. Mahomes is now three and two against Josh Allen. Rich, is this the best QB rivalry we've seen since Brady Manning?
Starting point is 00:04:57 Yeah, hold on. Hold on now, Mitchell. It's like, we go too fast to anoint Kings and then we're doing it too fast. Like, great QB rivalry. Let's appreciate it. These two are the future of football. They're great. They're the present of football.
Starting point is 00:05:13 But there was Tom Brady Manning. There's Tom Brady, Aaron. There's Aaron. There's Aaron. There's Drew Breeze, Aaron. There's Drew Breeze, Tom. There's Matt Ryan, Tom. You know, let's be easy, easy.
Starting point is 00:05:30 You know, let's not get too crazy. But right now, these two of the best quarterbacks in football. time they line it up together, it's going to be history. I mean, it seems like it's going to be like this for the next decade, Rich. I mean, when is it ever going to stop? I mean, we've seen Mahomes playing at MVP levels. Now, Josh Allen, I mean, this is peak performance for Josh Allen. You were talking about it going into the season.
Starting point is 00:05:50 You love Josh Allen. You thought he was going to make a big step. You thought the bills were going to be Super Bowl favorites. He's showing it right now, Rich. Is he the unquestioned best QB in the NFL right now? Best player? There's no unquestioned best right now, Mitchell. There's too many people playing great football.
Starting point is 00:06:05 the cornerback debate. Like, they're like, who's the best corner in football? It's like, it depends on which week you ask. You know, you get Slay, Slay one week, you get, you get, I mean, right now there's some rookies, sauces playing at a high level, which is crazy. Then you got Pat Sartan, then you still got Ramsey in the wakes. And J.C. Jackson isn't going to go quietly into the night. Xavier and Howard, you know, he's had some rough weeks, but you know he'll be back and
Starting point is 00:06:29 it'll be strapping. You know, so you just, you just never know. And then you got Stingley out in Houston, who's been playing well, but he's on a bad team, so it gets kind of overshadowed. And don't forget about the former defensive player a year in Indianapolis. And they found a way to get out of it. They're sneakily three, two and one. And nobody's talking about it.
Starting point is 00:06:47 He's sneaking their way through. Yeah, they've been won some big games of late too, Rich. But, you know, here's a game. Everyone's talking about home field advantage, right, for the playoffs, Rich. And this is a huge opportunity for the bills to separate themselves. I mean, next week's another huge game for Kansas. of Chiefs. They're going to have to go in on the road against your 49ers, Rich. It doesn't get any easier, whereas the Bill's host of Packers. You know, it's one of those games, Rich. This is
Starting point is 00:07:17 that point of the season where teams start to separate themselves. And speaking of your 49ers, Rich, oh, Mitchell. Speaking of your 49ers, which I know there's a lot of excuses to be had, but I know you don't want to use too many of them. Atlanta's a tough squad, but they really controlled this game 28 to 14. Your thoughts on the outcome and what's ahead for the Niners. The San Francisco 49ers are an elite team. They will be an elite team when it's all said and done, but nobody can be elite when you lose both your starting tackles, both your starting corners, three starting defensive linemen, your starting safety, your starting quarterback, and a starting linebacker. I don't know too many teams that have the ability to still be elite
Starting point is 00:08:04 after all of that. In Atlanta has been playing really good football. Marcus Marriota is being very safe with the football. He was 13 to 14 for 124. Not huge numbers, but that's all you need to do. Managed the game. He also had six rushes for 50 yards. That was the difference in the game.
Starting point is 00:08:21 He was using his legs. That made the difference. They had 168 yards rushing as a team. I can't imagine the last time in San Francisco 49ers gave up that many yards rushing. But when you don't have Eric Armstead in the middle, you don't have Bosa, you don't have those big time, big playmakers. play man-and-man coverage on the outside. So it changed the way that D'Meco has to call the
Starting point is 00:08:39 defense. Then you're not going to have success. I mean, Jimmy Garoppolo played a solid game, but he had some costly turnovers, one before the half where he's just trying to give Debo a chance. But later on in the game, you can't have that interception. But Brandon I, Euk had a good game, but there was too many, way too many drops in the game, way too many self-inflicted wounds. But I still believe in them. I still believe the 49ers are going to compete at the end. Just like last year, they'll find a way to get healthy at the right time. Trent Williams is going to be out for the season. But Glinchie probably has a calf.
Starting point is 00:09:08 It's going to make it tough to make it back for the Kansas City Chiefs game. The corners, the growing injury. I mean, Emmanuel Mosley won't be back. We don't know what's going to happen, which are various more. That growing is always, you know, you don't know when Bose is coming back. So it's looking grim right now, but I still think they'll find their way into the playoffs and they'll make it interesting. They get healthy by the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Nobody will want to see him. There's a couple of blessings that come out of this, Rich. I mean, for one, the NFC West is turning. into that, I guess, NFC East, what you thought to be dumpster fire. I mean, there's no team that's really differentiated themselves, a bunch of three and three squads right now, you know. And the second part to that,
Starting point is 00:09:46 the Niners are going to be able to build some depth here. I mean, they're getting the injuries. If there's any time to have injuries happen, I guess it's at the beginning of the season. You know, they're going to get these guys back, like you said. Hopefully some of the backups can elevate their game and take this team to the next level once those starters do come back. Well, they're going to have to take some risks.
Starting point is 00:10:02 They're going to have to take some risk. Kyle Shanahan is going to have to open the playbook up, and they're going to have to get creative because they're going to have to score some points. You know, they can't lean on the defense as they have been in the past. They're going to have to put up 35 points a game in order to be competitive in these ball games because they have Kansas City Chiefs and they ain't playing no games.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Sticking in the NFC West, Rich, the Seahawks. I'm going to start it off of one name. I know you love them. Tyreek Woolen. Tell me about him. First off, Mitchell, his fourth interception and his second. fourth game, like he's playing silly right now, Mitchell. It doesn't even make sense.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Four interceptions and four games. And it's an expectation. I was sitting on the couch with my wife, and I said, hey, Kyler had thrown a ball his way, and they got a completion. I said, keep trying the kid. He's going to have a book. It's a reason he has three of them in three games. And he threw the nine ball on him.
Starting point is 00:10:51 You do not throw a nine ball in Seattle. I had made that point before, personally. And now we got the kid making it for you now. Do not throw the nine ball in Seattle. He runs 4-2. There's nobody who's going to outrun him. He's jumping up in the air. He's got long arms.
Starting point is 00:11:09 He got good hands. He's going to bring it down. That's four in four weeks. Looking like the defense's a rookie of the year. Then you got your boy, Michigan State guy, Kenneth Walker, Jr. There was a lot of concern once Rashop Penny had went down. Rashop Penny is the lead back. Has been playing great football.
Starting point is 00:11:25 Unfortunately, season-ending injury. Kenneth Walker has come through in a big way. Richard, I'll say this. With Rashad Penny and Kenneth Walker the third, I think a lot of Seahawk fans thought they were going to have that thunder and lightning combo. Well, news flash, Seahawk fans, you got that thunder and lightning in Kenneth Walker. I mean, the guy runs sub 4-4 was the king of breaking tackles at Michigan State.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Really should have been in the Heisman race more. I thought it was the biggest sham that he wasn't invited to the ceremony. But Rich, this is a guy, much like Marshaun, doesn't like to talk a whole lot. Let's still let his play on the field do the table. talking. And now the Seahawks team is three and three. They're gritty, Rich, they're scrapping out wins. And there was really no point in this game outside of the Phantom block punt resulting in a touchdown where it was even close, Rich. I mean, the Seahawks handled this game. They're six games in, Rich. They're 500 and they're only getting better and better. And people said Pete Carroll was crazy
Starting point is 00:12:24 when he said, we're not rebuilding, we're reloading. Well, nobody could have ever imagined they have would have one of the best rookie classes in all of football and maybe in the last, you know, five or ten years in the National Football League. You got two starting tackles out of it. Crazy. If you just left with that, people would be like, blown away. Hey, this is great. You got a starting corner, not just a starting corner, a starting corner that is the frontrunner
Starting point is 00:12:50 for a defensive rookie at a year right now. You got a starting nickel and Kobe Bryant who has not one, not two, not three, but like his running mate, four forced fumbles on the year. And every time, every game, it's almost like you're expecting it. Kobe Bryant is going to make a huge play and change the game. And he has done that week in, week out.
Starting point is 00:13:07 He forced to fumble on Kyler Murray this year. And then you say, that's enough. You got four players out of the draft class. That's enough. Like, no more needed. But no. Then you get the running back, Kenneth Walker Jr.
Starting point is 00:13:18 To say, hey, we're going to secure the bag with this running back. And he's doing a great job. I know Pete Carroll and John Snyder are over the moon about this. But let's talk about Kyle of Murray, because he ran the ball 10 times for 100 yards. He 23 or 37, like, had a solid game for 22, I believe, in a pick because you don't try reek.
Starting point is 00:13:37 You didn't learn from the other three games that he got picks that you don't try, but he had a study clause in his contract. And we got him next week, Mitchell. We got them next week when they play the Saints. Catch us on Amazon Prime at TNF Tonight starts at 7 p.m. Eastern. We're going to be covering the Saints in the Arizona Cardinals in Phoenix. he's struggling. He's not seeing the field well. Richard, this is a team. We talked about it the last couple of weeks.
Starting point is 00:14:05 This is a team without an identity right now, Rich. I mean, they had a hot start last year. You know, everyone thought they would be upper echelon team in the NFL, and then they just went stagnant. And they didn't just go into the valley, Rich. I mean, they continue to go deeper and deeper and deeper into that valley. Everyone thinks they're just going to snap out of it. When do they snap out of it? When they get D-Hop back? I don't know. I don't know if D. Hopps fixes his vision problems because he's not seeing the field, Mitchell. There are open receivers. When there's open receivers, he hits them sometimes.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Sometimes he doesn't. There are plays that are obviously schemed up for certain receivers to be open. He's not even taking his eyes there. You see it from the All-22. You're like, hey, I can see what they were drawn up. And the guy they were drawn up to be open is open. And he's not hitting them, Mitchell. And that's where you're like, hey, like, maybe there was a reason they were like,
Starting point is 00:14:55 stop playing video games. and study your playbook. Because you can't have those. If you're paying your quarterback $48 million, you don't expect him to miss not only wide open receivers, but schemed open receivers where you're like, hey, it's just, hey, we're going to circle this guy, we're throwing it to him. Just don't miss him.
Starting point is 00:15:12 And he doesn't even look at that guy. Cliff Kingsbury cannot be happy. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'll say it. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football or my career in sports media.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations,
Starting point is 00:16:30 stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes,
Starting point is 00:16:45 follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett.
Starting point is 00:17:05 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed. That's correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:17:29 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Then you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:17:50 You know who's really not happy, Mitchell? You tell me. You tell me. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mitchell. Goodness gracious. They thought, hey, we got a layup in the Pittsburgh Steelers. They've been beat by everybody. Richard, you said it.
Starting point is 00:18:07 You said it a couple weeks ago. This ain't golf. There's no gimmies in football. Everyone had this game penciled in as a W, including yourself, including me. Ask anyone, guaranteed win Tampa Bay. What happened, Rich? I mean, how concerned would you? being in that locker room right now?
Starting point is 00:18:29 There is not a player in the National Football League with more credibility than Tom Brady, Mitchell. Not one. Not anybody on the International Football League can stand on their reputation more than Tom Brady has. With that being said, Tom, he missed practice for a wedding, which ain't that bad, Mitchell. It's kind of crazy, but it's not that bad because it's Tom. Like, if you said, if you said Kyle and Murray missed the practice for a wedding, we got problems, Mitchell.
Starting point is 00:18:57 If you said, Geno, Smith, missed the practice for a wedding. Mitchell, we got problems. Even if you said Josh Allen was at a wedding and he missed a practice in a game week, we got problems. Tom Brady can get away with it because he's the goat. Let's not be silly. But when you lose, Mitchell, when you lose the game and you only throw one touchdown pass and then you cussing out your offense line, Mitchell, you know, it's. It's tough. It's tough because those guys were at practice that day. Those guys are at practice
Starting point is 00:19:33 that day and every other day. And how much, Richard, you being a player, I don't know if you've dealt with similar situations to that throughout your playing career, but how much is the proverbial leader of your team, the quarterback, being absent from practice? We already know he's taking Wednesdays off. Like, how much does that impact you in your desire as a defender? Like, break down that mindset. I don't know if it affects the defense and what they do. They got to be better. And I'm sure Bowles is telling them that.
Starting point is 00:20:05 Like, that doesn't have an effect on the defense. You were playing a rookie in Kenny Pickett. They knocked him out of the game. And then Mitch Trubisky, we've talked about him throughout the year. But he went out there and executed. He was nine for 22, I mean, nine for 12, 144 and touchdown, no interceptions. Trace Claypool finally got involved. A huge catch on third and 11 to seal the game.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Like, they only had one TD by a receiver this season, and it happened in this game. And that's insanity. So you're concerned with the defense. I'm not putting it all on Tom and saying, hey, Tom not coming to practice because of wetting, made the defense play. No, no, heck no. We're not doing that. But offensively, four for 14 on third down, that's concern.
Starting point is 00:20:48 This is Tom Brady. This Steelers defense, Ryan Clark had just called him out about their effort. Now, Cam Hayward is a heck of a player. He's a dog. And Mink or Fitzpatrick is a doll. But they're very beat up. They're down two or three starting corners. They're down T.J. Watt.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Like, this isn't the Steelers defense that came into the season, like, wrecking shot. So you expect them to have more success. And if they had this game and this issue and everything and Tom didn't miss the practice and all that, then I'm sure Tom would still deal with headlines and headaches about his off-the-field things, you know, because rumors are happening. And you should never talk about somebody's personal life. but somehow they could keep talking about people's personal life. But what they will talk about is him missing that practice
Starting point is 00:21:30 and then them playing this way offensively. Yeah, that's going to be a tough one to defend. And you can defend the goat to the cows come home because he is who he is. But that's one of them tough ones. Richard, they got another air quotes here. Give me game next week against the Carolina Panthers. If they lose this one, Rich, we got to start sounding. down on the alarms, man, because there's got to be a huge sense of urgency in that building right now
Starting point is 00:21:56 to get this W next weekend and do it in a prominent fashion. No question. No question. They got to. They have to. But you know where they're sounding the alarms? Richard, I'll be ringing every bell. I know exactly where you're going with this. And I cannot believe we have not talked about this. I'm on the podcast yet. The big apple, Rich. What is going on? It don't even matter where you're at in the big apple. You go, you go to the jets. You to the Giants, you're feeling good. I said, they have the toughest, toughest media in the world. They have the toughest.
Starting point is 00:22:30 They're toughest on sports. They're saying they suck when they're good. They're saying they're killing every coach. They want everybody to get fired. They're going to have a hard time being tough on these dudes because these teams were not expected to be this competitive this quickly. Brian Daybow has those boys flying around. Look at them.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Look at them. They beat the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore Ravens are legitimate. been legitimate. And every time we look up and say, man, the Giants just, like, they're not better than the team they beat, but they beat them. Like, there's only so much you can say, how many times you can say that before it's like, maybe they are better. Maybe they have better players. Maybe we are not giving them the credit they deserve. I don't know. They keep squeaking them out, Rich. I mean, they start, everyone's, you know, hey, they got an easy schedule. They played the Titans
Starting point is 00:23:18 who started the season off soft. And they, you know, played Carolina and played a, close game. But now here you're playing the Packers in a neutral site. Now here you're playing the Baltimore Ravens who are a hell of a lot better than their three and three record, Rich. I mean, this is a team that's held double digit leads and their three losses, which, I mean,
Starting point is 00:23:37 we can speak about that next, how the hell they blow those three leads. But Richard, this Giants team is a team that's making it happen with a quarterback that it still needs a little bit of work. I mean, let's be real with ourselves. And really, truly not a great receiving threat. I mean, And we're talking about young tackles, young tackles.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And K. Bon Tivino just got his first sack. Yeah. This game happened to be the biggest sack of the game because it was a forced fumble on Lamar Jackson that effectively ended this game. But Mitchell, what? Richard, you know this game better than most, right? And for our listeners and common fans like myself,
Starting point is 00:24:18 when you have a stalwart at the left tackle and Andrew Thomas. I mean, I know you've played with a handful of great left tackles, namely Trent Williams. How much does that improve your confidence going into a game? I mean, that's Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Like he's sitting back there cooking grits, chips in grits. And steak, if you need it, like he's back there comfortable. You allow the quarterback to get comfortable to feel comfortable, hitting his back foot and going through the reeds. He's not looking down to see who's coming around,
Starting point is 00:24:49 who's coming around, who's by his feet. He's standing in that pocket. He's taking off when he has to. He's not forcing the runs. Like, they're playing confident. They're playing with house money, and you love to see it. But you know who I'm more excited about, Mitchell?
Starting point is 00:25:01 My boy, Sala, in the boys. You know what I mean? I told you. Hey, told you. Look, you know sauce. Look, I told you. Mitchell, you know how I feel about sauce. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:25:15 Come on, Richard. Mitchell, if your own lunch, you probably need you some sauce. If you have a boss, if you're playing Chris Gros, If you're listening to Rick Ross, you probably need you some sauce. And I told you, they better call him because you're going to need Randy Moss if you're going to get open on sauce. He is out there strapping, Mitchell. And then he's going to put the cheese on his head at Lambeau and walk around.
Starting point is 00:25:38 And then Breece Hall, the rookie going off, does the Lambeau leap with a Jets jersey on into Jets fans and Lambo? Who! Like, they are acting unusual. And I love it. All doing this with, I mean, let's be real. Zach Wilson isn't providing a whole lot of a spark to that offense. You, you're right.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Breeze Hall, stud. I mean, they got great young wide receivers. Elijah Moore didn't do anything today. You know, Garrett Wilson didn't do anything today. I mean, these are guys that have a high trajectory in this league, Rich. I mean, Robert Sala. Robert Sala. I mean, we got two, Brian Dabell and Robert Sala.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Who is your favorite right now out of those two to walk away with Coach of the Year? Well, right now, Daveo's in line for it, but both of them are in the big market, and I believe in my guy solid to come back because he's doing it with these young guys. And on the other side of sauce, DJ Reed, strapping, you know, had a huge loss this year, but it's strapping. Quinn and Williams, you saw the video of Quinn and Williams, you know, arguing with his coach. You see, now we don't, we don't hear nothing about that anymore. Because guess what? Brick, their de-coordinator, he's rushing four. and they're letting the coverage cover in the back end.
Starting point is 00:26:55 They insert Juan Alexander into the nickel lineup. And I guess what? Rich, he out there hitting everything moving. He out there hitting everything moving and energizing his defense in a different way. C.J. Mosley is playing well. And then offensively, Zach Wilson, just don't throw the game away. Just don't throw the game away. Breeze Hall, handing the ball off to Breeze Hall and let him do his thing.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Richard, not to add insult to injury for the Packers, but Matt Lafleur lost to his brother, Mike LaFleur. I mean, this snapped the Packers 15-game home win streak. And amongst another insane stat, the Packers have scored only 107 points this season. That is the lowest point total in any six-game stretch of Aaron Rogers' career. Rich, we talked about it early in the season. This wide receiving core was going to be an issue. And guess what, Rich?
Starting point is 00:27:49 It's an issue. Mitchell, guess who was the best man in LaFlor's wedding? Guess all me. Guess, Mitchell. Who's the head coach of the New York Jets? Robert Sala. That was the best man at the Packers head coach's wedding. Mitchell, when I tell you, he hasn't beat him.
Starting point is 00:28:06 I don't think he's beat him yet. Like, he didn't beat him when we were in San Francisco. No. We beat him over and over and beat the dog out of him in the playoffs. And then you get him to the Jets. And he can't beat him, Mitchell. Mitchell, all of these guys were on the same staff at one point. They were all on the same staff.
Starting point is 00:28:24 And it's just cool to see they're all great friends in a second week in a row that Sala is beating another one of his friends. So, you know, he's definitely two and oh in the friendship rivalries. Let's hope he doesn't have to play the Niners this year because, you know, we don't want him to get three. You know, that's a hard game for me to root for. I know you're a huge fan of Robert Sala. I know you loved his energy when you played under him for the Niners. Did you ever see this coming? Like honestly, did you see this coming when he went to the Jets this quickly of a turnaround
Starting point is 00:28:55 to make them a competitive roster? This is the second year, Rich. I mean, did you see Robert Sala coming in and turning this program around this quick? Metro, yes. I was the one standing on the table for him saying he should be a head coach. I'd hope is coming, you know. He just needed more talent. He needed some more talent.
Starting point is 00:29:12 And he needed his defensive line to not get eviscerated. by injuries last season. They got eviscerated by injuries. Then his starting quarterback, just had the rookie learning curve, rookie growing pains, ah, offensive line. This year, even this year, his offensive line got beat up. Thank goodness they got a left tackle who can play. You know, Dwayne isn't the young Dwayne.
Starting point is 00:29:33 He used to be, but he is still starting left tackle in the National Football League and he's still going to hold it down better than most. Now they've got a solid right tackle. They're having a couple weeks of continuity on that offensive line, and it's showing in the run game. Breeze Hall, he got a playmaker in their backfield, They've got a big time running back. They got Garrett Wilson, big time receiver receiving threat.
Starting point is 00:29:51 They got more, big time receiving threat. They got burials who had a touchdown today on the reverse. Like, they have the weapons to be a very dangerous team. And defensively, you got corners who can just strap and man-to-man coverage against A-Rod. You can do whatever you want with the D-Line. You can do whatever you want with the safeties. They're going to get it done. And it's some concern with Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:30:13 But I told you, I told you, they don't have the receivers. They do not have the receivers. And it's division. Oh, Mitchell, this division, the Aaron Rogers invitational that was the NFC North, Minnesota. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:30:36 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:31:01 I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. And the next, we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told,

Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:32:17 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. So,
Starting point is 00:32:43 Oh. Thank you for finishing that sentence. And yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:32:54 Listen to look back at it on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I and Richard, I don't think Minnesota is that good. I, I, I, maybe I'm wrong, but five in one. I mean, this is a team, you know, the Lions were hot. I watched that whole. game, I thought the lion should have beat them. You know, I mean, they don't have a whole lot of pop to them, but they keep winning. You know, I mean, they're kind of like the Giants in a way, right?
Starting point is 00:33:21 Right. They keep winning. Is this, is this a team? I know you've got to give it some thought here, Rich, but is this a team that sneaks into Richard Sherman's top five in your power ranks this week? Hold on. You're on third street, Metro, but there's a chance. There is a chance, Mitchell, I cannot lie about that.
Starting point is 00:33:37 The reason they have a chance is because Kirko, good Kirk, can do some dangerous things. Mitchell. I know you like him. I know you like him. Justin Jefferson. Zadarius Smith and Patrick Jones. Two sacks each. Patrick Peterson.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Richard. My guy trying to catch me while I'm on the couch. Got him a pick. Got him a book. Harrison Smith. Got him a book. Like you got veterans. You got guys that can make plays on defense who can just play solid.
Starting point is 00:34:07 You got a quarterback who can get it done. Some receivers that can get it done, Mitchell, some pressure on the corner. I want to. I want to stop you at the quarterback that can get it done. Comment. Rich, a lot of people don't know this. But, I mean, you told me when you were a free agent, you said, I didn't want to go play with Jim.
Starting point is 00:34:24 First off, I thought you were nuts going to the 49ers, right? I mean, here you are leaving a decorated career with the Seahawks, and you're going to the 49ers who were in the depths of the division, right? And you wanted to go, you had confidence in Kyle and Jimmy G. But if it wasn't for them, if it wasn't them, you also said, confidence in Kirk Cousins. I would go play and be a teammate of his. What do you like so much about Kurt Cousins? Mitchell, he can get it done. He's had his moments. He's had his mistakes. He's ran into me in the playoffs a time. Sure. Or two. But when he's hot, Mitchell, just like last
Starting point is 00:35:02 week, and he was 17 of 17, he was freaking walking the ball down the field. And Kevin O'Connell, another new coach, Mitchell, these new coaches, Mitchell, these new coach, Kevin O'Connell. Mitchell, that same Kyle Shanahan, McVeigh, West Coast system that everybody's running, Justin Jefferson is benefiting now. Kirk Cousins is benefiting. Dalvin Cook, outside zone, inside zone, mid zone, benefiting from a little bit of gap scheme. Like, he's putting together, like you keep saying, hey, maybe it's not the players. When you, you can have players that aren't as talented or aren't supposedly as talented,
Starting point is 00:35:42 as the other team. And you can overcome that with scheme. And sometimes you can overcome scheme with players. This is cool because each week is changing up. Like sometimes it's the scheme. Sometimes it's the players. But it don't matter today. Mitchell 5 and 1 in the National Football League.
Starting point is 00:35:57 And people are arguing, are they the second best team in the NFC? I don't know. Maybe. You know, Rich, you're talking about scheme. And this is something I want to talk to you about. This is another. You know, I know you're one of the most intelligent guys. in the NFL, and I'm just your common fan, right?
Starting point is 00:36:16 The Cincinnati Bengals, they got a W today, but Joe Burrow has been struggling a little bit up to today, hit a hell of a game today. But defenses are adjusting, and they're playing, what is it, deep cover two? Is that what it is, Rich? Yes, yes, it is. Walk the listeners through how that impacts, you know, a guy like Joe Burrow playing this new scheme. How can I explain it best?
Starting point is 00:36:39 because a lot of quarterbacks want to get the ball. Everybody wants to see big plays. Quarterbacks wants explosive plays, explosive passes. Playing a deep cover two shell is exactly that. You're putting a shell a cap over how deep they can throw it. If they send a bunch of people deep, they'll have four people on two, and it'll get defended as such. And you'll likely be throwing the ball to the defense because they're sitting back.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Two safeties watching. If you try to split them, a lot of times they'll converge. Maybe you can split them and force it on the linebacker, but if you have an athletic middle linebacker, then you're fine. A lot of times they'll put a safety in that position just to protect them. But they're basically going to force these quarterbacks to be patient. They're going to force them to take five-yard gains, to check the ball down, to take a curl route and set of the go route and not allow them to take shots all over the field.
Starting point is 00:37:30 The reason it's not, it didn't work against Burroughs today was because Jabbar Chase is an absolute beast, savage. And he took one of those short passes. and went the distance and split the defense. Now, that's not happening very often because eyes are on the quarterback when you're in a two deep shell. All eyes are on the quarterback.
Starting point is 00:37:47 So it's not like you're playing man to man or you're playing this or your back's turn. Like, they're looking at the quarterback. So where his shoulders go? Where's the eyes go? The defense converges. So when he's looking deep, when his shoulders are up, a defense is going to continue to be deep.
Starting point is 00:38:00 But it can be overcome by yak. And they had a good yak attack today. I sure did, Rich. Well, we got another great game tonight. I know by the time our listeners hear this, likely going to be over. But who do you like in tonight's matchup? I want to score prediction the whole nine yards. Eagles, Cowboys, big divisional game.
Starting point is 00:38:22 Your prediction. Big play, Slay player? Big play. Big play. Big play. Slay is absolutely playing. All right. Big play is active.
Starting point is 00:38:30 Bradbury's playing. Their D-line is playing. And they're hot. Their O line is pretty healthy still. Okay. Lane Johnson still hasn't given up a side. back in the last 27 years or so. All right, I got you.
Starting point is 00:38:42 All right. Muscle Batman, the Skitty Batman playing, right? Yeah. All right. Cool. Yeah, I got the Eagles. I got the Eagles in a walkaway game that isn't even competitive. For the simple fact that last week, Michael Parsons went off.
Starting point is 00:39:00 Michael Parsons been going off on everybody. But the last week, he played against the Rams. and they ran a play where they only rushed two linemen. They only rushed two defensive linemen on the play, Mitchell. On that play, he got a sack. It was the most ridiculous thing. Every offensive lineman on the ram should have got fired that day. Do not expect that kind of miscommunication tonight.
Starting point is 00:39:24 Do not expect him to have a great game by any stretch of the imagination. If he gets the sack tonight, consider him very elite and front runner for defensive player to year because he earned it. If he gets it on Lane Johnson, give him the trophy. because he earned it. I don't expect him to have a big game. Trayvon Diggs, who's been really competitive, really sticky in coverage, getting his hands on footballs.
Starting point is 00:39:44 I think they're going to have a lot of time. They're going to use double moves, triple moves. They're going to get underneath. I think they're going to be able to move the ball, but I think offensively they're not just going to let the Dallas Cowboys run the ball down their throats. Like they have been every other week, they're going to pack the box, they're going to play man-to-man coverage on the outside and make Cooper Rush beat them and show Dallas Cowboy fans why Cooper Rush is not the answer
Starting point is 00:40:08 and why they paid Dak Prescott the big bucks. If Dak Prescott plays, I think they have a chance. But if it's Cooper Rush, I can't see the Eagles beating the Cowboys. I got the game 317. Well, Richard, you got an insane Philly fan base. I mean, who knows? You might just be making some fans over there. You've been talking really positively about them over the last few weeks.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Mitchell, you got to tell the truth. The truth, like, people were getting mad. They're like, you keep criticizing guys. And like, they, like, hey, I say, I tell you what's on the tape. What, what has the tape said? That's what I'm going to describe. If the truth makes me a hater, then that's the problem. You know, that's kind of an issue.
Starting point is 00:40:50 That's what these guys, you know, to, to defend you and kind of hammer at your critics, what do you expect? I mean, you want to just a bunch of boilerplate, hey, a great competitor, you know, good teammate you know he gave a strong effort out there we'll see him next Sunday it's been another great episode here this wraps up i guess wraps up the sunday of week six uh we're gonna see a great guest this week we appreciate you guys all joining in as always make sure you hit that subscribe button that like button we appreciate you guys richard i'll let you sign us off appreciate appreciate you guys for joining us like he said hit that sub button if you're new check us out next
