Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? Starting point is 00:01:42 and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on, a Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multimillion dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ah, this is The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles,

Starting point is 00:02:43 I got Ving Rames, who's in Mission Impossible, which is amazing. I got Nick Wright. I created, I think the most exciting thing I've ever done for me, I've created a shoe for Kauai Leonard. Everybody said he can't get a shoe deal. I have created a shoe, and I'm dead serious on this. Michael Jordan, if you were ever to listen to the show and all your shoe dudes, we created a shoe. You designed it?
Starting point is 00:03:12 Everything. And we're going to show it to you. Let me start with this. A message. Teams and businesses send messages all the time. How they treat one employee, they send a message to the other employees. How they lowball this employee. They send a message to other employees.
Starting point is 00:03:33 It happens in every business I've ever worked in. Todd Gurley yesterday for the Rams, news broke on our show, got a record-setting deal. Not just a new contract, a record-setting deal. Shatters the way running backs are paid. Guaranteed money was massive. Levian Bell was low-balled by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it leaked to the press.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Isn't that interesting? Stuff leaks when somebody wants it leaked. The Steelers did. Those moves were not just about football. I do believe Gurley is more valuable with the Rams and Jared Gough, young quarterback, than Lavian is to the Steelers and Hall of Fame quarterback Big Ben. But Todd Gurley's had no suspension, no drugs, no holdouts, no calling out his team to the press. Lavian Bell's had suspensions and injuries and drugs and holdouts and bad press.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Todd Gurley has frankly been the better employee. and his bosses not only rewarded him, they gave him a little more than the position usually is worth. This is why NBC chose Jay Leno over David Letterman. Critics preferred Letterman. Artists, comedians preferred Letterman. But if you ever read the book by Bill Carter about Leno and Letterman, and it was an HBO movie, it was fantastic, actually.
Starting point is 00:04:54 The story is they were deciding one day in Florida. They had a big meeting all the execs at NBC. NBC was owned by a company called GE, and Bob Wright was the president and CEO of GE. And he flew down after days of negotiating. Leto, Letterman, Letterman, Leno, Leto, Letterman, Leno, letterman, Leno. Who do you choose? Bob Wright walked in quickly and said, who's a better guy? Who do you want to be in business with the next decade?
Starting point is 00:05:18 Who's easier to work with? We're our affiliates. And they were like, Leno. And Bob Wright goes, all right, let's do it with Leno. They're both good. Let's go with Leno. Walked out. Todd Gurley is the better guy to work with.
Starting point is 00:05:29 The better teammate, better in the huddle. Not going to call out the team. More adult, fewer headaches, less baggage. For all you millennials out there, I know you want to change the world, man. I'm going to push back an authority, man. I'm going to have a voice, man. I'm going to create my own system, man. I'm going to push back, man.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I know that's cool, but here's what's cooler. $45 million in your own private jet. That's cooler. talent and education is great, but at some point there's lots of people in the workforce with talent and education. Are you fun to work with? Are you cool to be around?
Starting point is 00:06:05 Do people like you? Are you a good teammate? Or are you a pain in the ass? Lavian Bell has become a pain. Talented, amazing. Love him. Great player. But with Todd Gurley, I don't get the holdouts.
Starting point is 00:06:18 I don't get the bad press. I don't get the suspensions. I don't get the drug stuff. And I like Levian Bell. And I know him better than I know Todd Gurley. And they're both amazing. But NBC chose Leno for the same reason. I hear you garage bands.
Starting point is 00:06:32 I am not going to sell out, man. I'm going to buck the system, man. I'm a garage band. You too is a sellout. Yeah, they are. They sold out the Rose Bowl a couple weeks ago. I know it's cool to push back. Be your own man.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Be independent. Not listen to bosses. But the Steelers lowballed him and leaked it. To send a message to the Steeler play. players. We're the Rooney family. We matter. We're good people. We've been good to the NFL community. You're good to us. We take care of you. It matters. Be a good teammate. Don't always push back. If you want to push back, at least push in the direction of the organization's wishes. By the way, Chris Carter first things first this morning. He talked about why Gurley got
Starting point is 00:07:25 more than Levian Bell. Record setting to a humiliating offer. The difference between him and El Bell is it's not the big plays. It's not who's a better receiver. One guy's in the drug program and one guy's not. So why would I give $57 million to a guy that potentially is looking at one more slip-up and he's going to face another significant suspensions? As you look at these running backs and you start trying to reset the market, you better also check what's the character and what does the league in that organization do they trust them?
Starting point is 00:07:58 I believe that Todd Gurley, this is one of the few times we talked about Todd Gurley, he already got his money, and we've been talking about El Bell for over two years. Thank you from a Hall of Fame player, from a Hall of Fame player. Let me shift gears. Religions need a face. Every religion, religions in the Far East, religions in the Middle East, Christianity, Every religion has to have a face, right? Something to grab onto, something to relate to. My entire life in sports, I've seen old crusty, rigid coaches
Starting point is 00:08:41 fall in love with themselves and not understand what makes those old crusty, legendary Hall of Fame coaches work is a star player that sells their religion, that sells their message, that lubricates the locker room. Greg Popovich has said before he only drafts players who have gotten over themselves. Seems to me Greg Popovich could use his own advice. Interesting story yesterday. Danny Green from the Spurs. Now a Raptor came out and said, yeah, I kind of empathize with Kauai Leonard.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Like I played and I was hurt and I wanted a second opinion with the Spurs doctors. Oh, my God. another spur calling out the system. In the last year, Lamarcus Aldridge, get me out of here. Kauai Leonard, I'm not playing. Danny Green. Yeah, they're doctors in San Antonio. I'm not saying they're bad, but, you know, I mean, I should have had a second opinion. I played injured.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Isn't that interesting? When did all this start happening when the face of Pop's religion, Tim Duncan, retired? Antonio Daniels on my show last week lives in San Antonio, said the same thing. If you just look at what has transpired in San Antonio over the past two years since Tim Duncan retired, the Marcus Argers wanted out. He wanted out. And then Kauai wanted out. None of these were issues when Tim Duncan was in San Antonio.
Starting point is 00:10:16 He put a bubble around them. So they never had to deal with the drama and issues that the other 29 NBA teams had to, deal with. Tim Duncan was the shield. Tim Duncan was the buffer to rigid, loud Greg Popovich. He sold Popp's religion to the players. Hey, Tim Duncan says it's the way to go. He's the best player by far in our team in our city, division, league.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Tim says it so. He was the Messiah. Interesting yesterday in New England. Old veteran near 70-year-old coach. Bill Belichick got major pushback from the media on the Malcolm Butler story. Much like Duncan, Tom Brady sold Belichick's crusty, my way or the highway religion for years. Duncan leaves all sorts of spurs now have a voice and pushback.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Refuse to play. Want out of there. Belichick benches Malcolm Butler during the Super Bowl and doesn't tell Tom Brady any explanation. Doesn't give him one. And Tom this offseason, Danny Amandola, Tom Brady, Gronkle, taking shots, not showing up to OTAs,
Starting point is 00:11:35 let me out of here, I'll do it on my terms. Oh, same thing happened. Duncan and Brady, like Tom Cruise in Scientology, gave Popovich and Belichek's religion a face. Duncan's gone. And Belichick no longer has Brady's absolute devotion to be the messenger. Tom now, Tom has his own religion.
Starting point is 00:12:04 It's called the TB12 Clinic. Join, get bigger and stronger and last forever. Yep. I'm saying Belichick and Popovic are still really good, and they're going to win a bunch of games. But they're no longer unstoppable forces, and they're no longer gatekeepers to championships. I've seen these old crusty guys,
Starting point is 00:12:27 Hall of Fame guys, Bobby Knights won, Pop Belichick. The Spurs way, the Patriot way. Duncan gone, Brady no longer completely devoted. It just doesn't have the same feel. Great stuff today. I am going to introduce the Kauai Leonard's shoe because I'm tired of everybody saying that a finals MVP at 22, the best two-way player in the league,
Starting point is 00:12:56 one of the top five players in the league, you can't make a shoe for him. Because Michael Jordan's brand yesterday said, we'll let you out of your deal. He has no shoe deal. It's why he wants to get out of San Antonio. It's why I don't think he'll stay in Toronto. And it's just a bunch of baloney. You can't tell me a finals MVP at 22 years old, the highest winning percentage of any current NBA player,
Starting point is 00:13:17 and the best two-way player in the league can't have a shoe deal. You have got to think differently. and we'll introduce that new shoe today. Plus, coming up next, 30 NFL executives ranked every quarterback, one to 32. And I've only got one real disagreement. And I keep rolling my eyes and shaking my head at this disagreement.
Starting point is 00:13:39 And I think NFL execs are wrong. I think they're wrong. We'll talk about that. Coming up next. Nothing puts a dent in your summer plans. You know what I know it. Like car trouble. I mean, these days, let's be honest, man, you don't want to leave the state.
Starting point is 00:13:55 You don't want to take all your kids somewhere. You live in Florida. You live in California. Live in New York. You want to go upstate? You want to get in the car? Take the kids up. Finger Lakes up in New York.
Starting point is 00:14:04 That'd be awesome, right? Redwood's up in California. That'd be great, right? Oh, car trouble. Not so great. This is the pits. $800, $1,300. Sort of dingers your summer plans.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Get extended vehicle protection like I do. Car shield. breaks down after the warranty is over, you're covered. They also provide 24-7 roadside assistance, rental car two while yours is being fixed, all for free. If your car has 5,000, 150,000 miles, doesn't mean you have to pay high repair bills. CarShield.com. Either go to carshield.com and put in the code herd, 10% off, or they have a phone number, do it right now. 800 car 6100, 800, 800 car 6100, and just mention the code heard.
Starting point is 00:14:49 In both instances, you get 10% off. A deductible may apply. Carsield.com. I am going to introduce Kawhi Leonard's new shoe this hour. Very excited for it. I know, Joy, you're rolling your eyes at Kooky Me, but I'm literally listening to the radio yesterday. And people tell me, Jordan's getting rid of Kauai.
Starting point is 00:15:06 He can't get a shoe deal. I'm like, no, no, no, no. You can't tell me the top three player in the league can't get a shoe deal. You have to switch your mind. How you think about basketball. I'm going to change your mind on stuff. But you're being serious. I'm being dead serious.
Starting point is 00:15:21 I have created the shoe form. And if Nike or Adidas or Puma and New Balance and whoever does shoes, if you're not listening, I have given you the roadmap. I'm literally doing a favor to America. I'm doing a favor. I'm making people rich today. Everybody except me. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:39 So yesterday, 30 NFL execs scouts, GMs, a lot of these guys are, I would imagine, are the same guys I talk to, do a poll every year to ESPN. and they rank the quarterbacks into three, four tiers, four tiers. And every year, I push back on one guy. And I look at this list, I have one-one, tiny, tiny, tiny slight disagreement. By and large, I agree across the line with all the NFL execs, the entire poll. I buy it with one exception. So let me go to the exception. Let's go to Tier 1.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Okay, their tier one is Rogers, Brady's, B, Breeze, and Rathlisberger. Their tier two is Matt Ryan, Russell, Wilson, Stafford, Rivers, Wenz, Locke, Newton, Derek Carr, Garoppolo Watson. But in their second tier, they have a first-tier quarterback, Russell Wilson. They keep doing this. Now, they don't disrespect Russell and put him in the third tier. They don't rip Russell Wilson. They're not blind and put him in the fourth tier. And they do put them very high up in the second tier.
Starting point is 00:16:58 So it's not disrespectful. My tier one has been for several years, Aaron, Brady, Breeze, Ben, and Russell Wilson. NFL execs agree? They just lop off the Russell Wilson. Let me just say this. If we were judging actors and you were setting the same records as Tom Hanks and you kept ending up in the same groups as Tom Hanks,
Starting point is 00:17:20 Oscar nominations, Oscar wins, critical awards, you'd be like, oh, that guy's pretty close to Tom Hanks, right? Let me give you some facts. Russell Wilson led the NFL last year in touchdown passes with the lowest ranked offensive line and worst running game in the league. If I told you a quarterback led the NFL in touchdown passes with the worst no line in no running game, who would you have instinctively thought of? Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Aaron Rogers. Tom Brady. No, it was Russell Wilson. So he ends up in the same group as Brady and Rogers. That's interesting, Joy. Let's go to the second thing. Fact. He has the second highest passer rating all time in the league.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Now, if I say, well, who is first and third? Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady. That's interesting. A fact. He's third all time and touchdown interception ratio, all time. Number one is Aaron Rogers and number, number, Two is Tom Brady. Oh, he ends up in the same category as Tom and Aaron Rogers over and over and over again.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Isn't that interesting? But he's a tier two quarterback. By the way, fact, Pete Carroll had been fired two times in the NFL as a head coach, left USC under a storm of controversy. In his first two years in Seattle, it was 7 and 9, 7 and 9. Russell Wilson arrived, back-to-back Super Bowls, and a record of 65, 30, and 1, right up there with, oh, wait, Tom Brady and Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Interesting. If you end up in the same group over and over with, you know, the De Niro's and the Tom Hanks and Merrill Streep's and maybe you're as good as them. But the problem is we can't wrap our brains around Russell, and because of three reasons. Number one, he's 5-11-and-a-half. Star quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:19:26 They're like Terry Bradshaw. They're like Dan Marino. They're 6-4, 6-3, 6-5. Number two is he plays the position differently. We've never had an actor quite like that. And number three is, whereas Aaron Rogers and the Packers, we think about offense.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Tom Brady, Gronk, Randy Moss Welker. Think about offense. When you think about C. Seattle, a lot of their stars run defense, which is actually more amazing for Russell Wilson. He's never had a great receiving corps. He's never had a great offensive line. He has had one great running back, a little bit of a pain in the butt, but he's had one, Marshawn Lynch, now he's gone.
Starting point is 00:20:05 If you keep ending up with Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady and all these crucial statistics, passer rating, touchdown interception ratio, winning percentage, and it's always Brady, Rogers and you, or Brady you and Rogers, or Rogers, you and Brady, then you're in their class. Russell Wilson is a tier one quarterback, but he plays it differently.
Starting point is 00:20:33 He's smaller than we think. And because Seattle's been a defensive sort of brand in the NFL, we just can't wrap our brains around it. Other than that, the executives in total agreement. Oh, there's one other little tiny one. they have Dak Prescott and Eli Manning tied for 17th. I like Dak. Mostly because Eli Manning has the mobility of a batting cage.
Starting point is 00:20:57 I'm going to go with Dak, younger, better bod, little mobility. I think his ceilings, maybe not multiple Super Bowls, but I'm going to go with Dak better than Eli Manning. I do not believe they're tied. I think Eli Manning right now is a C quarterback. I think Dak Prescott got to C plus to a B. minus quarterback. Here's Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:21:20 No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So DeMarzor Rosen might still be in shock about the trade that went down last week, but he's already looking forward to forming a relationship with his new head coach. De Rosen sat down with ESPN's Chris Haynes and was asked what his expectations are for playing for coach Pop. I've always been a fan of Pop. It was just something about him from the way he run his team, the way he coached his
Starting point is 00:21:47 credibility, everything that stands out about pop, you just got a love. So to have this opportunity, you play with a legendary coach at this point in my career, I think it's one of them blessings that's in disguise. I know you were talking earlier about Popovich and Belichichichich and their faces of the organization kind of getting away and exposing the culture a little bit. But I do think a lot of players around the league, starting with LeBron, still have a lot of respect for Popovich. And to me, while I, well, you know, I'm a millennial.
Starting point is 00:22:17 believe you have to evolve. You know, I think you have to keep up with what your players and the culture of the league is trending towards. They each have five rings. So their culture works. So to me, what makes a consistent or a consistent winning organization is everyone being on the same page. It's incredibly difficult to do.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Right. Right. That's where the Duncans and the Brady's come in. Essential. You can't, you really can't be. A superstar that preaches the message, the gospel of the coach. You have to have someone who follows the coaches dropbeat, if you will, and relates it to the players. So I really feel like they're going to get back on track just because they have such a lineage of success.
Starting point is 00:23:00 I do think that Duncan not being there is crucial, but they have to reinvent themselves now. They have a completely different team. Hawaii's not there. Parker's not there. Dunkin's not there. And what I'm saying is in the reinvention, it's being more player friendly for both Pop and Belichick. A little less about the culture and a little more. more about the players having empowerment.
Starting point is 00:23:19 And I think that's working in Golden State and Philadelphia Eagles right now. Well, you have to because they all have brands. They're all superstars. So it's not like it was before social media when you could get away with controlling everything. Now you have to give players a little more leniency. And I do think that the Rosen's going to have a good year with five. He's in his ninth year. He's incredibly athletic.
Starting point is 00:23:38 And he's going to be in a good organization. So the Raiders made John Gruden their $100 million man, this off season, in a 10-year deal. So to return to the franchise, he left six. 17 years ago. And on Tuesday, he essentially offered the Raiders and money back guarantee. That's how confident he is. He told Jared Bell of USA Today, if I can't get it done, I'm not going to take their money.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Who guarantees I'm going to live 10 years? So I don't think about that. You start thinking about a 10-year contract. I've got more important things to worry about than eight years of my contract. I got to agree with him. I know that the contract is sagging and shocking and $100 million and he's been away from the game for so long. He did just walk away from one of the highest-paying, most high-profile jobs in sports.
Starting point is 00:24:17 So it's not like he's in this for the money, even if it's $100 million. And he's right. You do have to stay in the moment. If all he's thinking about is, well, am I going to make it to 10 years, $100 million, he's going to fail.
Starting point is 00:24:27 He knows that. I think there's a high probability fails anyway. And I like Gruden. Maybe, but he can't focus on that. So you're asking that question, what kind of response do you expect? Of course he's going to say
Starting point is 00:24:38 he's got to focus on what he's doing right now. I can't worry about 10 years from now. Although it's a little morbid that he might not be around in 10 years, but I feel him. Finally, Des Bryant has gone unsigned as a free agent for over three months now. And Michael Urban believes that even though Des remains one of the NFL's, better receivers, he's concerned about how heavily revenge weighs on Des.
Starting point is 00:24:56 He told us to the Dallas Morning News, I worry about Des' state of mind. You have to feel you are still great, and I believe he is, but not having a deal done, not being with a team that has to bother you. There is no getting around that. I do have to agree with him with the motivation of revenge. When you're in a spot like Des Bryant, revenge can't be your motivation. have a chip on your shoulder for sure but get with the team and then prove the Cowboys
Starting point is 00:25:18 You can't be picking and choosing and this team is not going to allow me to show off to the Cowboys they're going to see you they have television sets Des is battling a little self-delusion that he wants to choose where he goes and that's not the way it's going to work
Starting point is 00:25:33 if you're Julio Jones maybe or Amari Cooper or you know Antonio Brown you can never forget Odell Beckham was on the market reportedly like two months ago and there were no takers high maintenance wide receivers are not as cool as they were a year ago.
Starting point is 00:25:48 There's a little change in the NFL. People are kind of done with high maintenance wide receivers. They no longer, the analytics are out. They don't equal wins. Analytics hurts the diva. The analytics tells the truth about Carmelo and Odell Beckham, and they don't equal wins. And people are like, okay, you're out.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Analytics are bad news for high maintenance people. It doesn't make you any less of a star. It doesn't make you any less of a social media influencer. All those things still happen. But if you want to make an impact on the field, you can't be putting all these demands on where you go. You were the one that was let go. Get with the team and prove them wrong, which I feel like Des is capable of doing. But it's just a bad spot for him right now.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. So a week ago on this show, I said, I went to watch Wasp Ant Man with my son. And they show this trailer for Mission Impossible. And I said on the air, I said, holy God, does that look good? And so Mission Impossible is one of those rare sort of franchises.
Starting point is 00:26:45 I mean, it's Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible. And I got to show you a clip from it. Here it is. There cannot be peace without first a great suffering. The greater the suffering, the greater the peace. The end you've always feared. It's coming. This is a bad idea.
Starting point is 00:27:16 Is it ever a good one? honestly he's not just some observer he's an assassin not trust anybody outside of this room you go row he's been authorized to hunt you down and kill you that's the job except that Ethan you've lost this one what's done is done what's done is done when we say it's done showtime critics are saying it is the best one yet it's getting incredible buzz one man besides Tom Cruise has been in all six He joins us now, Ving Rames. Emmy nominated.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Hey. New York Giants fan. I'm not sure if I love that. So you have been in 130 movies. I watched the trailer a week ago. And I turned to my son and my son's like, we judge trailers. And my son's like, Dad, can we come watch that? It opens this Friday.
Starting point is 00:28:16 You've been in all six. It's getting incredible buzz. A lot of times critics, Ving, they're rough on action movies. It's not autistic enough. Yes. This is getting, is this the best one? Well, I think this has combined action with a storyline with personal relationships. So, and I think the chemistry between Tom was now an executive producer with the director, Chris, puts this a couple of notches above due to the chemistry, like a good basketball team or football team.
Starting point is 00:28:45 By the way, Tom broke his ankle in the filming of this. The stunts, I just read this morning, the stunts Tom performed. many of them himself. Well, Tom, to me, is an athlete. A lot of fast twitch muscles, and I think he could play probably soccer. I think he'd be very good at soccer. Really? Yes.
Starting point is 00:29:03 You know, when it's interesting, you're a sports fan. Amen. So when a LeBron James comes to Los Angeles, you know, Joey and I have talked about this, he is an actor from Cleveland. I mean, Los Angeles is full of guys like you from New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland, Dallas. And so LeBron comes here, and there's a lot of pushback from the Kobe. fans. They wreck his murals. We don't like this. I always see LA as tolerant,
Starting point is 00:29:26 accepting, we like new people. How do you think the LeBron thing plays in the city? Well, I'm a huge LeBron fan, first of all. I think LeBron is the greatest of all time. Thank you. So that's where I stand with LeBron. Thank you. I think part of that also is his image
Starting point is 00:29:44 off the court. What he does socially, politically, for many young African-American children, they see a two family household. They see a man who is involved with his family. So I think that's important as to what kids
Starting point is 00:29:59 may look to attain. I think as far as the Kobe fans and whatever, and I think it's only a minute group of them who would deface a mirror because I think LeBron will help make the team better. And I think a lot of these whatever
Starting point is 00:30:15 Deshawn's, who's got, Lance Stevenson and Rhondon whatever. These are tough, gritty guys. Thank you. These are defensive players, and you're not going to beat Golden State with shooters. They have probably three of the best shooters of all time. But defensively and with toughness and grit in the growth of the young players on the Lakers,
Starting point is 00:30:38 you know, I give it two to three years. I have always been a fan of player mobility. My belief is owners move teams, GMs move for better jobs. Yes. Why can't the star player who has a very short self-life? the audience disagrees with me. The audience wants players to stay in their cities. I wish NFL players use their leverage.
Starting point is 00:31:01 For a fan that comes up to you and says, Ving, you don't understand. He had Cleveland on his jersey. He had Philly on his jersey. He had Jeter's got Yankees on his jersey. He can't play for another team. How do you reconcile mobility with stability in a city? Because you've moved.
Starting point is 00:31:16 You're an actor. Well, two things. I would say, let's not, as Shakespeare said, hold the mirror to nature. Most of us have not been with the same job for five, 10, 15 years. Most of us opportunities have happened and we made a decision to move to stay, what have you. So I think LeBron has done the same. But what I'm most proud of is he did something for Cleveland that hadn't been done in, did they say, 50 years or whatever it's been, you know, and I think even what he did financially for the economy. So he's earned the right if anyone has
Starting point is 00:31:51 to move on. And I think that's why in Cleveland now, I think most fans are, you know, there's no problems with, he brought us the championship and now he's moved on. The Lakers have all these new parts and you never really know how it's going to work.
Starting point is 00:32:04 You were in Pulp Fiction. And it was, John Travolta had been literally invisible for 20 years. Who's Quentin Tarantino? Samuel L. Jackson wasn't a star yet. You're in that movie. Much like a sports team, a new team. You had like a bunch of,
Starting point is 00:32:20 a bunch of parks. Take me back to Pulp Fiction. You were a new team, and people, if you would have been an NBA team, they're like, that's a 21-win team. Okay, you ended up being in one of the most iconic films, resurrecting John Travolta's entire career, making Samuel L. Jackson a household name. Did you know it when you were on set?
Starting point is 00:32:39 No, we didn't know it, and I think we did that film for either $5 million or $8 million. Oh, my. That's what Kraft Services is now. Yes, they gave me one point in the film, and I want to thank them for that one point because it's one point of everything. Oh, my. One point of everything.
Starting point is 00:32:56 So it's going to put my kids through college when they're of that age. But I think, no, no one knew, but I think sometimes as with a good team, I'll use the Lakers, you put certain, you're building an orchestra and you need the violin section, the bass section, the trombone section.
Starting point is 00:33:14 And I see the Lakers putting pieces together as we did, Pope Fiction that the chemistry will fit or next year if they get a free agent. So did halfway through the movie, did you sense this is out there, but it's special? I sense we dared to be different. And I sense that this was something that was going to be a little more on the edge, but it was going to be excitement. And I sense the Lakers doing something a bit different from previous years.
Starting point is 00:33:44 This is one of the more tougher teams with all the free agents that they picked up. When you, you're a New York Giants fan, and Eli Manning, I said they should have taken a quarterback because quarterbacks last 15 years. They took a running back. And I think they took a running back because they were afraid of the Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Archie Manning. They were afraid of ticking off the Manning family, the bad PR. The Giants, as you know, Ving, have the older fan base in New York than the Jets. Yes. It is blue blood.
Starting point is 00:34:12 It is old New York money. Give me that, like the star power of the Mannings. Have you ever worked on, I mean, Tom Cruise is a superstar. Take me to working with a star, the power, the leverage, the fear. Well, I think the decision to get, I hope I pronounce the name right, Sequin. Sequin Barclay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:33 I think he is the most pro-ready offensive player. That's fair. Most people agree with you. Yes. And see, and I don't know if you can pass up on that for quarterbacks. We've seen in several years, you know, Heisman, trophy winning quarterbacks who didn't necessarily pan out. And, you know, so do you go with the sure thing and hold on to Eli for another year or two?
Starting point is 00:34:57 Because he's getting up there in age, correct? You know, or do you go for something that's more unsure? I think that the running game now is going to help Eli's proficiency. So it will extend Eli's career, which has obviously dipped last three years. He's not been a good quarterback for three years. And how has the offense been on the hold? Not great. They don't draft.
Starting point is 00:35:20 They didn't pay attention to the offensive line. And the Philadelphia Eagles and Cowboys, by the way, did. And that's why you've got the problems. Can I ask you, Tom Cruise is literally, it's amazing. I saw something the other day on the internet that made me laugh.
Starting point is 00:35:34 They showed Tom Cruise's age in his face and Wilford Brimbley's. And they were like the same age. And they showed them both at like 50. Like Tom's like 50, right? Isn't he like 50, 45? A little older. Okay.
Starting point is 00:35:46 So what I'm saying is, Like, is this guy... He's... Good God, Ving! I mean, is he... Yes, Tom takes care of his body and the way LeBron James takes care of his. He does.
Starting point is 00:35:58 Tom eats well. Tom also, I think, has... I think he could have been an athlete. He has a lot of fast-twitch muscles. Yeah, you said that he is sinewy, athletic. Yeah, he is. And at his age and his body fat and how he eats and takes care of himself,
Starting point is 00:36:14 um, he's special. And I also think he's special. I also think he's special now as a producer because he can see talent. He can, he's very good at putting pieces of a puzzle together that would fit. And I think he's been very successful this time. Here's Ving and Tom in a scene, Mission Impossible, opens Friday, getting great critical reviews. Here it is. Relax.
Starting point is 00:36:39 I'm relaxed. You don't sound relaxed. Luther, does he sound relaxed to you? He sounds terrified. Please, I'm not terrified. I just have a bad feeling, it's all. I thought you said you were relaxed. It's entirely possible to be relaxed
Starting point is 00:36:51 and extremely uneasy at the same time. I'm supposed to believe that you are perfectly relaxed. Right here. No, it had a dark alleyway waiting to buy black market plutonium from a psycho. Benji, I won't let anything happen to you. Okay. See, Benji, you're perfectly safe.
Starting point is 00:37:05 That's easy for you to say. You're in the van. Well, you want to be in the field, tough guy. And tonight, Luther, I would like to be in the van. God, I can't wait Friday. Way to go. Hey, uh. It's a ride, so enjoy. 130 movies, some iconic ones.
Starting point is 00:37:21 Conair, you were in, Mission Impossible 6. Ving Rames. Let us hear it for Ving. Hey, thanks a lot. Go Lakers. Go Lakers. Hey, can I say something quickly? I'm a part of a nonprofit group called Dream Vision basketball.
Starting point is 00:37:37 We've been successful in getting 76 of 81 kids Division 1 scholarships, and the others got D2 scholarships. What's it called? Dream Vision. So we've been, I mean, we've taken kids from all parts of life. They remain focused. We give them tutoring, what have you. And we have about nine NBA players in nine years of existence.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Good for you. You're a good dude. And Clayton Xavier Williams is the head of the program who brought me into it. God, dang, you should be an NBA scout. Screw that acting thing. Mission Impossible can't last forever, dude. Clippers need help in their scouting department. Oh, yes, they do.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Fing Rames back in a second. I'm introducing Kauai Shoe next. All right, welcome back. It's great to have you in. It's going to be easy to rip me. I am setting myself up to be ripped by America. I don't care. That's the fun in this business, right?
Starting point is 00:38:32 I could read the sports page this morning and just regurgitate stuff you've already read. Sometimes you've got to go out there, put yourself out there on a limb, and let you destroy me. I have not seen this yet. Okay. So there's a report this morning that Kauai Leonard,
Starting point is 00:38:43 Michael Jordan's brand said we're not interested. And I'm listening yesterday driving around, went to the grocery store, driving home. No personality. Never talks. Every radio host. You cannot give him a shoe. And I'm like, time out.
Starting point is 00:39:02 Time out, time out, time out. He was a finals MVP at 22, youngest ever. Not MJ, not Kobe Lutton, Braw, no at Shaq. Co-I. Leonard. Highest winning percentage of any active player. Best two-way player in the league. and he can't get a shoe to you. A lot of times you have to change your way of thinking.
Starting point is 00:39:21 Shift the paradigm. If I'd have told you, okay, we're going to do this. We're going to do this Broadway musical. It's about a founding father. He's the guy on the $10 bill. And it's going to be a hip-hop version to Alexander Hamilton. He'd be like, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It was the biggest sensation probably ever on Broadway.
Starting point is 00:39:43 A hip-hop version. of the founding father Hamilton. If I'd have told you, there's this company. You should invest in this company. What is it? Random strangers will be circling your house, and they'll just show up and take you places. Who are they?
Starting point is 00:39:57 No idea. You don't know who they are? No, no, they have to pass a marginal test. They'll pick you and your kids up, take you to dinner. Do I know? No, they're strangers. Have they been certified? Not really.
Starting point is 00:40:10 You could have invested in Uber that's changed transportation in America. literally killed the taxi cab industry, helped restaurants, DUIs have plummeted, parking garages no longer a great investment. Uber. You have to think differently. You're going to tell me a finals MVP at 22 youngest ever, best two-way player in the league, and you can't come out with a shoe deal.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Michael Jordan's like, out, not interested. Really? You have to, like Hamilton and Uber, change your way of thinking. So I'm sitting in my car. and I thought to myself, if I worked for a shoe company, you shoe company execs can thank me later on this. I'm giving you millions of dollars. I said, what would I do?
Starting point is 00:40:53 I would write down the words that I associate with Kauai Leonard, right? Because I want to build something that identifies with them. Shoes really connect when you can identify the apparel with the person. Like Kardashian purse, you know, you watch the Kardashian show, shoes are purse. She has a million of them. You think of a Kardashian, you think of apparel, a purse, shoot. Oh, it connects. So I thought, what are the four or five words or terms that I think of with Kauai Leonard?
Starting point is 00:41:24 Quiet, private, under the radar, defense, and gray and black jersey. Now, I just let that sit there for a second. My radio listeners, you're driving around right now. try to guess quiet private under the radar defense black and gray introducing Kawai Leonard's new shoe
Starting point is 00:41:48 the stealth tell me that isn't awesome go ahead rip me go to your blogs go to Twitter that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard you've got to create
Starting point is 00:42:04 a different shoe because he's a different guy now by the way it's not perfect. We've got to figure the laces out. Oh, yeah. Okay, I'm not saying I'm a shoe designer.
Starting point is 00:42:18 I like the name. You like the concept in the name. I do like the name. I like how you put a creative spin on why this should be his shoe. It gives him a little edge, too. If I say stealth, you think under the radar, that's why they were created. It goes under radar. It was part of our national defense system.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Private, quiet, black and gray, metallic. So, by the way, you can send your checks to FS1 and care of the herd. You can't tell me the best two-way player in the league, highest winning percentage. He's a great story. Nobody believed in him. And then he jumps onto the scene, builds, builds, builds, builds, builds, like the stealth. You heard about it.
Starting point is 00:43:01 Then in Vegas, they had shots of it. And then finally, it was unveiled during the Middle Eastern War. No, he's kind of got to reinvent his image anyway, leaving San Antonio. All right, go ahead. It has no laces by design. It's outside the box. We're trying to figure that out exactly. I might need some laces for basketball.
Starting point is 00:43:18 Go ahead. Mock me. That's fine. Coming up next. You know how we use the term dumpster fire? I have the herd hierarchy. How about the herd hierarchy? The 10 teams in this league that have a chance to be a complete dumpster fire because there's a story out this morning.
Starting point is 00:43:33 And man, it makes me think I know who number one is. That's coming up. Ah, this is the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Live in Los Angeles, High Heart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1, getting feedback on my Kauai Leonard's shoe, the stealth. Actually, some of it is remotely positive. People like the name and the concept.
Starting point is 00:43:58 I want to thank the people who built that in the back. We've got a lot of graphics people. They're very talented. Joy Taylor. that's her voice and her face. Nick Wright in five minutes. So every Tuesday during the NFL season, we just do it for the NFL season. I spend a lot of time in it because I have no life.
Starting point is 00:44:17 I do the herd hierarchy. And it's the top 10 teams in the league. And I'm proud to say that generally by the end of the year, our four or five teams at the top end up doing very well in the playoffs. We had the Philadelphia Eagles way up there before everybody else did all year long. And I saw this story yesterday. John Gruden says if I fail, I won't take the rest. Raiders money. If I can't get it done, I'm not going to take their money. And I thought,
Starting point is 00:44:40 this thing has dumpster fire written all over it. They have a head coach that hasn't coached in a decade. They're the poorest franchise in the league. They're moving soon and haven't won a playoff game in 16 years. And in their division, they are not close to the Chargers and Chiefs in terms of overall talent. And this is going to be a mess, right? Like, we know that, right? I know there's a lot of Raider fans. This is not going to work, right? I love Derek Carr, but if I said, before the year, I said, there's one team that's got a star quarterback that's going to implode. You'd be like Oakland. Like, this thing has a chance to just be a powder keg. So I thought to myself, instead of the herd hierarchy, why don't we do the herd dumpster
Starting point is 00:45:26 hierarchy? These are the 10 teams in the NFL that I think have a chance to absolutely implode this year. The dumpster hierarchy. Number 10. Denver Broncos. Number 10. Great organization. High expectations.
Starting point is 00:45:40 John Elway is impatient. And oh yeah, they almost fired their coach last year. And by the way, they bring in Case Keatom. And everybody in Denver's like, oh, he won 13 games for the Vikings. He's going to be great. Case Keenum's record was way sub 500 before he entered a great roster in Minnesota. Again, this division's really good. They almost fired their coach.
Starting point is 00:46:00 And John Elway is not a patient man. Denver number 10. Number 9. Jacksonville. Oh, Deshawn Watson's back. I guess you won't sweep Houston. Andrew Luck's back. I guess you won't sweep them.
Starting point is 00:46:13 And by the way, the Titans did sweep you last year. I think right in the middle of this season, people in Jacksonville are going to go, oh, wait, we have the fourth best quarterback in this division. We've got to make changes. Jacksonville, number nine. Number eight. I think I got these guys too low, Seattle Seahawks. I know, I know, I know.
Starting point is 00:46:30 I'm from the Pacific Northwest. But in the last five years, 13 wins. 12 wins, 10 wins, 10 wins, 9 wins. Now Cam Chancellor, retired. Cliff Averill, retired. Richard Sherman, gone. Michael Bennett, gone. Earl Thomas, wants to be traded.
Starting point is 00:46:44 Offensive line, still not great. I think Seattle, division's way better, Rams better. Niners have a franchise quarterback. I still think Arizona is one of the more underrated teams in the league. I think they're a year away, an offensive line away from being really, really interesting. Seattle, number eight on the herd dumpster hierarchy. Number seven. Bears. Are we sure Mitch Trubisky's any good? We know Green Bay is going to be better. We know
Starting point is 00:47:08 Minnesota's loaded. Mitch Trubisky didn't throw two touchdowns in any game, right? You realize he started one year in college, and they were babysitting him last year. There's a possibility, well, not even a possibility. He's the fourth best quarterback in this league. He's not Aaron, and he's not Stafford, and I don't think he's Kirk Cousins. And I didn't love him in college. I think the Bears, historically, they have been a mess more than they've been good, could be a mess. Number seven. Number six. Sorry, Joey, Miami Dolphins.
Starting point is 00:47:37 I mean, Ryan Tannahill's back, but ownership, front office, I never trust the dolphins. I just don't trust them. You and me both. I mean, they've let go of some really good players. I don't know. Adam Gase is kind of clean house a little bit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:56 He's... Cleaning house works if you go five and one to start the season and everybody by... What if you go one and five with their schedule, which all their tough games are on the road. Then all of a sudden the team bales on the coach who started over and got rid of really good players like Jarvis Landry and Adam and Sue. I think it could be a powder keg too.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Number five. Carolina. They've never had back-to-back winning seasons under Cam. They're getting frustrated with Cam. They called him out before last year. Now they bring in Norv Turner to help Cam. And their division's really, really good. Atlanta is the best team, I think, in their division. Maybe the best team in the NFC after Philadelphia. And New Orleans
Starting point is 00:48:29 is real good. And what if they finish third? And the Norv thing doesn't work. And then people in the organization, halfway through the season, you know, they're three and five, deep third place. Atlanta is like six and one, six and seven and one, and New Orleans is six and two. And people are bailing on Cam Newton because even Norr Turner can't help him. Watch out for Carolina. Number four. Baltimore Ravens. Fans are tired of Joe Flacco. He's underperformed his contract. Fans are tired of John Harbaugh, who's underperformed his contract. Ozzy Newsom's now. The GM is gone. He was kind of the rock solid guy.
Starting point is 00:49:04 And you got Lamar Jackson, who is, if nothing else, interesting. So whenever you have an underperforming quarterback and a really, really interesting new first round rookie quarterback backing him up, you get the Tebow situation in Denver. Fans start shouting Lamar, Lamar, when you're 0 and 1 and 2 and you're 1 and 3. This, I think I, maybe I got them at 4, maybe I should have them higher. Number three. Detroit. They're just an annual participant in our dumpster hierarchy. Our dumpster hierarchy. Is Matt Patricia going to work? Does he feel like a head coach? We're smart. A lot of guys are smart. Charlie We're smart. He was smart. Smart's not everything. Can you relate to guys to the alpha males in the room by you? He's a defensive guy and his best
Starting point is 00:49:52 players, a quarterback? I don't know. I don't know. A Matt Patricia to meet. That was a story earlier. Players not necessarily buying into them. I don't know. You know, it could have been a blog thing. I got Detroit number three. Number two. Tampa Bay. James Winston. Going to miss the what, first three, four games? The marketing department doesn't have his name on the billboard. I don't think that's a very good sign. Listen, the kid's not mature enough right now. It's called franchise quarterback because it's about the franchise. And do you really want to give the keys to James Winston? He's been in trouble in college. Now he's trouble in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:50:31 He's just not mature enough for the position. I mean, again, if he was a linebacker, I probably wouldn't care. If he was a right guard, I wouldn't care. If he was a corner, I wouldn't care. If he's a safety, I wouldn't care, a wide receiver. He's a quarterback. Grow up. I mean, by the way, he's easily the fourth best quarterback in that division,
Starting point is 00:50:46 and he's not close to Bree. He's not close to Cam and not close to... You're not close to Matt Ryan. The fourth best quarterback in a division usually means you've got disarray coming now or very soon. Number one. It's got to be the Raiders. Doesn't it have to be the Raiders? John Gruden hasn't coached in a decade.
Starting point is 00:51:05 If I take two weeks off, I'm rusty. Who can leave an industry for 10 years? Well, he was close to it. Yeah, I can listen to the radio. If I'm gone for 10 years, I'm not going to be very good on the radio. I don't know. I just don't see it working. Don't like the defense.
Starting point is 00:51:19 They're moving. Porrest owner. Don't trust the ownership. Stadium issue. The Gruden and the GM like each other. You'll see pictures on the internet they do. That doesn't mean anything. A snapshot.
Starting point is 00:51:28 doesn't mean anything. What's the working relationship? You heard grumbling toward the draft. There is my herd dumpster hierarchy. My guy, first thing I got to ask him about via the Coward Global Satellite Network, my friend Nick Wright. All right. First of all, when you looked at my herd dumpster hierarchy, anybody you agree, disagree with? I vehemently agree with the Oakland Raiders.
Starting point is 00:51:58 The only part I disagree with is you set any team with an elite. quarterback that could fall off. Wake me when the Raiders getting elite quarterback. Like David Carr, Derek Carr, pardon me. That was almost an intentional Freudian slip. His career yard for attempts are 6.5, which ranks him 131st in NFL history. You know who's 132nd in NFL history? His brother, David Carr, 0.1 better than the brother known as one of the biggest bus ever. He's had great weapons. Cooper and Michael Crabtree's had good running games. He has, in my opinion, the best offensive line in his entire conference. And he's just, eh? The dinking and dunking is fine, so I don't think
Starting point is 00:52:44 the Raiders will be good. And I don't trust John Gruden as an NFL head coach in 2018. The other one that I agree with you, I would just simply have higher up is Jacksonville. Every single team in the AFC South should be markedly better this year. The cults get your, I believe, patron saint, Andrew Luckback. The Texans get an entire defense and Deshawn Watson back. And last year, the Titans, I know they made the playoffs. It might sound odd. Maybe they won't be better.
Starting point is 00:53:15 But Marriota had an oddly ineffective year, and I expect him to bounce back some. I just think it's hard to duplicate that type of dominant defense year over year. And they'll be reminded that their quarterback is still Blake Bortles. I'm not surprised you found a way to throw shade at my. guy cam in there. That's just part for the course. We don't have to start having that debate yet. Yeah, we're at least three weeks away. So Todd Gurley gets the money and Lavian Bell gets the flimsy offer. And I believe one offer was record setting, changes the paradigm of running back pay. The other one was insulting. And it wasn't just about their game.
Starting point is 00:53:51 It was a message. And the Rams' message to the locker room was, good dude, we'll pay you. And the Steelers was, hey, clean it up. Quit calling us out. We're going to, we're going to leak this story of the bad offer. It was, I think both teams sent a message. What did you make of the Gurley great offer and the Levian Bell embarrassing offer? Listen, I think you're at least partially right. I think that obviously Gurley having no suspensions under his resume, Gurley being seemingly one of the better guys in the league helps. And Levon Bell being one more failed drug test away from another suspension hurts. But I also think the Rams are a different organization than Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:54:33 Because if they're just worried about quality of character or how good of a guy you are, I don't know if they go out and sign in Domic and Sue. I don't know that they go out and trade for Akeeb to leave and my guy, Marcus Peters. I think they're worried about raw talent. And Todd Gurley is the most talented running back in the NFL. He led the entire league in scrimmage yards and touchdowns last year. But you know how 10 years ago there wasn't something? a thing is a stretch four. And now we talk in the NBA about stretch fours. We are going to need
Starting point is 00:55:06 to create a new positional designation or new vernacular for this handful of running backs that are running back wide receiver three down hybrids because they cannot be paid the way run into the line of scrimmage on first and second down old school 28 carries 92 yard running backs work. Todd Gurley's one of these guys. Zeke is one of these guys. El Bell is. I believe David Johnson is. Those guys certainly deserve to be paid at the very least like number two wide receivers. I mean, I have been a little confused with the way people have just simply said, oh, well, you can't pay a running back that much. You're not paying for the position. You're paying for the offense accounted for.
Starting point is 00:55:53 And this, like, Levyon Bell and Todd Gurley are better play. than Brandon Cooks, more valuable to their offenses, more bigger difference makers than Brandon Cooks. But nobody thought they would sniff the type of money Brandon Cook's got. There's only a handful of guys like this, but an adjustment was needed. Todd Gurley started to make that adjustment with his contract. If El Bell has a quality year and he hits Open Free Agency, he'll do the same. We'll see if David Johnson and Zeke follows soon.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Two basketball questions. I said earlier this week, I don't buy this. Well, people in L.A. They don't like LeBron because he's Kobe's rival. I mean, I can think of an eight-second all-star confrontation and nothing else. I don't remember there are 22 matchups which LeBron dominated. I don't buy LeBron and Kobe are rivals. They're literally different generational attitudes.
Starting point is 00:56:47 What do you make of that story? Okay, well, listen, obviously on the court, as far as all-time ranking historical performances, is there is no comparison. If you want to take regular season or playoffs, any stat, advanced or regular, here's the full list of ones that Kobe has on LeBron. Free throw percentage. Yeah, that's the entirety of the list.
Starting point is 00:57:09 So no, of course, they're not historical rivals, but you're feeling that there is no rivalry between them amongst the fans. That is because you are a creature of the real world and not a creature of the Internet. I, my friend, am a creature of the internet. And let me tell you, Kobe fans, there's a special group of people that are not Laker fans that actually enjoy the fact that the Lakers have been so terrible the last few years.
Starting point is 00:57:36 You know why? Because their Lord and Savior Kobe Bryant hasn't been on the team. It further validates how great he must have been. And those people have never liked LeBron and will never like LeBron. The next mural could be LeBron. praying at the altar of Kobe Bryant, it will be defaced as well. He cannot change those people's mind. Those people do not want the Lakers to succeed with LeBron there. But I would argue those people aren't Laker fans. Those people are Kobe Bryant Sica fans. And you don't come across them at Manhattan
Starting point is 00:58:13 Beach and you don't come across them in real life. But I promise you they're out there. Joey Taylor, you were going. What did you think about that, Joey? I couldn't agree more. These people are not Lakers fans. Lakers fans just got the greatest current NBA player to commit to playing for them for the next four years. He doesn't, he averages 57 wins a game. They haven't won more than 35 in the past four years. Yeah. How could you not be elated?
Starting point is 00:58:40 They're not Lakers fans. They're Kobe fans. There's two different, two different fan bases. All right. And finally. And Joy, Joy knows about this. I will say because she like me, creature of the internet. Yes.
Starting point is 00:58:49 Hashtag maybe I'm crazy pod. Go ahead. I watched that, by the way. Thank you. Okay. So, listen, sometimes I have ideas, okay, Nick. And I'm not saying they're all great. I mean, most are.
Starting point is 00:59:02 But sometimes they're just out there. So I'm listening to radio yesterday. And everybody is saying, the best two-way player in the league, great story, came from nowhere, ignored by everybody, literally goes at, you know, in his early 20s, MVP of the finals. But because he's not a big talker, he can't be a shoe guy. and I said, time out. Hamilton is a Broadway play, which is a hip-hop version of a founding father.
Starting point is 00:59:28 It's the biggest sensation ever on Broadway. It doesn't sound good on paper. It's unbelievable. Uber doesn't sound good on paper. Random strangers go to Nick Wright's house and pick up his kids and take him to restaurants, but it's absolutely changed transportation. I am introducing to you the stealth shoe, which is Kauai Leonard, quiet, covert under the radar, defense, black, and gray.
Starting point is 00:59:48 What do you make of the shoe? Okay. I listen, first of all, not that I'm wishing an early demise upon you, but whenever you do pass on, first line of the Cowherd obituary, Colin Cowherd, a man who sometimes had ideas. I like it. I think it's a great tagline. Listen, I see where you're going here. This is what I would say. You know the esteem in which I hold you.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Yeah. And the way, the multiple mediums in which you have mastered or are mastering. I don't know that shoe design is the next frontier for you or the wonderful hardline staff. I like where your heart was at on this. I also think that for Kauai, it's always going to be hard to move units if you don't talk. And like, listen, you can make the strong argument. I know you would and I would even probably concede that Kauai at his best is a better basketball player than Russell Westbrook.
Starting point is 01:00:48 Yes. Kauai will never be the shoe pitch man Russell Westbrook is. Russ, it, Russ talks, Russ has personality, Russ is inspiring. Kauai, it is noteworthy when he smiles. Like, that guy, it's going to be hard to get millennials and younger than millennials, to get teens to want to rock his gear. Like, that's just the case. That is, that is the give and the take of wanting to run your brand that way.
Starting point is 01:01:16 And so, like, sometimes it goes too far, right? Sometimes guys get too worried about their brand. Kauai has not handled his brand in a way that says he actually has one other than that really great basketball player who I don't know what his voice sounds like. Yeah, that's pretty good stuff. Nick Wright, first things first. Listen every morning. Good seeing you, bud. Thank you, brother.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Talk to you later. All right. Yeah, maybe shoe design is not my thing. If I could figure the laces part out, Goulet, I'd really like it. I'm almost, I really think the concept is amazing. And I really like the design. A lot of people on Twitter are not bashing me. No, no, no.
Starting point is 01:01:54 The design needs a little tweaking. But I like the concept. The concept. I like your creative process of coming up with things that represent Hawaii. You're very creative. It was a good creative process on. And so my process was, word association, let's create a shoe. Is that how you muralists do it?
Starting point is 01:02:14 Sometimes. If you want a specific look for a specific neighborhood or something like that. So, yeah, you're on to something there. I do think that Nick is right, though. You got to have a little dash of personality, just a dash. Are they maybe slip-ons and they don't have laces because they're supposed to be stealth? So you can just slip them on and go? Yeah, that hasn't been mastered by Nike yet.
Starting point is 01:02:34 That's not really something they do. Shoes. You could do Velcro shoes, but that's when Kauai is 90 and lives in Boko Raton. If you're going to have a basketball shoe, you're going to need laces. Yeah. It's kind of part of it. Coming up next, it is, so it is amazing to me. Two things happen in sports yesterday, and everybody celebrated them.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Oh, I can't wait, very exciting. Two things happened by two glamour teams yesterday. Oh, my God, it's amazing. It's incredible. But if an NBA player does it, you crush him. That's coming up next. Everybody knows about Untucket shirts. I've been talking about Untucket shirts for years.
Starting point is 01:03:10 They replaced that sloppy, smock look of an untucked dress shirt. These are shirts designed to be worn, untucked. A lot of people think Untucket shirts fit well because they're made for, you know, modley bodies, slender dudes and magazines. Not true. Tall, short, thin, wide, long torso guy. Got it all. The Untucket designers have mastered the proportions that determine how your shirt falls. Neat, casual look for all shapes and sizes. Other brands whiff on this. All you got to do is log onto Untucket.com. The spring stuff is out now. We're just going into the fall. They've got their spring stuff.
Starting point is 01:03:48 Use the promo code Herd, 20% off your purchases. Untucket.com code Herd H-E-R-D. They have 25 retail locations as well around America. For all you guys, regardless of shape and size, unsmock yourself, unslop yourself, untuck yourself. Untucket.com, code herd 20% savings. Friday on FS1, Toronto, welcome some of the biggest names in basketball for this week's Big Three Battles.
Starting point is 01:04:18 The three and three games begin at 8 p.m. Eastern on FS1, or stream it live on the Fox Sports app. Katino Mobley and Meadow World Peace, playing well. Big Three's got better players this year. I do. A better player. Ketino Mobley playing well. So yesterday, a joy,
Starting point is 01:04:34 Bill Belichick's never felt that he needed to talk to anybody. And yesterday, Dan Shaughnessy, who's a 30-year columnist in the city, went to the press conference, and he asked him about the Malcolm Butler, sitting in the NFL, Super Bowl, and Belichick not addressing it, never talking about it, and it's clearly had an effect.
Starting point is 01:04:52 Tom Brady has pushed back, Danny Amandola pushed back, Gronk pushback, gronk pushback, they skip camp. There's clearly been an effect, okay? You can't deny it anymore. We've had multiple reports where Belichick a couple days ago, the Boston Herald reported, not ESPN, not somebody outside of Boston. Boston Herald, longstanding reputable newspaper,
Starting point is 01:05:11 reported that Belichick has been irritated by Brady, basically now getting Garoppolo traded and getting Josh McDaniel re-signed as coordinator. We got issues. We got a fracturing going on here. You can deny it, fanboy in Boston. We got it, multiple reports, national, regional, local. And so Dan Shaughnessy went after him yesterday,
Starting point is 01:05:30 and I thought asked very legitimate questions to Belichick about the Super Bowl and Malcolm Butler. I know you're all about this year, and we all understand that this year. That's right. And I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask about last year. Yeah, last year is last year. I'm not focused on last year.
Starting point is 01:05:47 What about the fact that everywhere we get, go, folks want to ask about Malcolm Butler. And we talked about that. That's multiple months ago. Do you care that the fans want to know more about this? My focus is on the 2018 season, not 2017, not 2014, not 2007, not 2007, not 2004, not 2001, not 2000. I'm not focused on any of those seasons. They're done.
Starting point is 01:06:11 And for this season, for this season's team, is it important for you to address the Malcolm Bucle thing with your team? It's important for me to have a good season in 2018. do everything I can't do that. Hopefully you can respect that, but maybe not. You know, I will say that like Popovich, I think Belichak's going to win a bunch of games,
Starting point is 01:06:30 mostly because they don't face elite quarterbacks. The Jets are trying to find a quarterback. The bills are trying to find a quarterback, and I'm not sure Ryan Tanna Hill's a special quarterback. But the AFC is better. Deshawn Watson returns. Houston's got a better roster. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City, if he's good, Kansas City's got a better roster.
Starting point is 01:06:46 Chargers have a better roster. Jags have a better roster. Stealers have a better roster. I think this will be the year. What New England will be this year is a really, really, really successful business that shows signs of attrition and erosion. I think they're going to go 10 and 6, but I think they will not be a number one seed. They will not be a number two seed. I think they will have to play in the first round.
Starting point is 01:07:09 They'll play in the wild card round, which they haven't had to play in years. They're rebuilding their offensive line. They lost multiple good players. Edelman out for a month. Nate Soder left tackle out. Dionne Lewis out. Malcolm Butler out, Danny Amandola out. So they'll still be like the Spurs.
Starting point is 01:07:24 They'll still win games. They'll still make the playoffs. But if they played in a legitimate division, I think they'd be in trouble. They don't. They play in the weakest division in football. If they played in the NFC East, I don't think they're a playoff team. I really don't. I think the AFC is clearly weaker than the NFC because half the teams on their schedule,
Starting point is 01:07:44 Buffalo twice, jets twice. They don't know who the quarterback is. They only play like six elite quarterbacks. But I do think Jason Whitlock's talked about this. The world's changed. NFL players watch NBA guys. They don't want to be Stonewall. They want answers to questions.
Starting point is 01:08:02 Here's Jason Whitlock. If Belichick doesn't open training camp or at some point this off, hey guys, I did something stupid in the Super Bowl. Seems selfish. It was a big mistake. I should have explained this a long time ago. I should have played Malcolm Butler or at least should have explained this to you all. If he doesn't do that, I think Tom Brady's going to let this do sink or swim
Starting point is 01:08:22 on his own. And so I do think this extends into the regular season because I think Tom Brady and a lot of players on that roster are justifiably upset with their head coach. Well, I think that's obvious. I have undersold this story. I didn't buy it. But when Brady no longer, he's not buying into Bill's religion. He's got his own religion now, the Tom Brady 12 clinic. And I think he's pushed back. I think he's made it very clear. He's spending the summer with his family. I think they'll win a bunch of games,
Starting point is 01:08:55 but mostly because they're in the weaker conference, the AFC, and they're in an absolute dog meat division, the AFC East. Here's Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So the L.A. Rams have had quite the off season. You've even said they're operating under a different salary cap than the rest of the league.
Starting point is 01:09:16 They added in the Dominican Sue, Marcus Peters, a keep to leave, Sam Shields, and Brandon Cooks. However, being off-season champs is meaningless in today's NFL, and Jared Goff says the Rams are trying to shut out the outside noise. Let's take a listen. No, no, it won't change the approach at all. I think you see every year there's teams that get that type of label and often fall short and you wonder why. I think that's something that we can't really focus on and take every day like we have the past year and build off what we did in the spring. You just said this before.
Starting point is 01:09:47 For the Rams being an L.A. team, they're so off-brand for L.A. Well, Jared Goff. Jared Goff is the star quarterback in Los Angeles, and I think that's the first time I've seen him talk in two years. There's just no chaos around them. None. They're very low-key. It's strange for a Los Angeles team.
Starting point is 01:10:07 You know what they are? And they're filled with stars. They're like a well-run football organization. They don't make a lot of off-season noise. Like the Giants used to be, like that. And now the Giants make a lot of offseason noise. Like, this is the way you want a football organization to run. I don't hear a ton of you until September. But then you got to do some winning. Yeah. Don't win some games. That roster's good. Yeah. So for much of the offseason,
Starting point is 01:10:28 speaking of the Giants, Giants rookie running back to Take one, Barclay has been working out with the likes of Odell and Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley. And Gurley told the Rams Wire that he told the rookie to expect things to come easier for him in the NFL. I told him the NFL is probably going to be a lot easier than college as far as the schedule, the pounding ground on your body. He just enjoy it. He's been doing such a good job his whole life. He's such a great person, too. So he's way above his years. He loves the game. So it's good to see a person like that. That seems to be the report on Saquan-Barkley. He's a very grounded kid and has his head on straight. I don't know about the NFL's schedule comparison to the college comparison for Girlie.
Starting point is 01:11:07 But this is the easiest position to change over from college to the United States. NFL to transition. Running back and cornerback, if you're good, you can go high school to college, college to pros, and you can play immediately. Yeah, if you're, if you're good. Yeah. But Sequin has a lot of, he has so much buzz on. I almost feel badly for him because if he doesn't live up to the expect, I feel like they're putting like Zeke level expectations on him. Sequin's going to give you yards. He's got a Reggie Bush thing. In space, if you miss a tackle and he makes people miss, he's gone. Like Seekwan's going to be a nice player. Is he going to be a thousand yard back. I don't think he's girly, and I don't think he's Ezekiel Elliott good,
Starting point is 01:11:44 but I think he's good. He's going to be good. I just hope the expectations don't overwhelm the situation there with the Giants. And finally, if free agent, Dwayneway decides not to continue his NBA career, he can always play in China. The Zhijang Golden Bulls have offered him a three-year $25 million contract. So it would make him the highest paid player in China and would also have one of the most lucrative overseas deals in history. That's a lot of money. That's a lot of money. money. I am not saying Dwayne Wade needs it. I'm not saying I want him to do it. But that's
Starting point is 01:12:16 $25 billion. Dwayne Wade playing in China. I don't like it. I don't like it. God, it's like T.O. playing Canadian football. The most of the heat can offer him for next season is 5.3. It's just like, you know, I don't want to see Tom Hanks at the
Starting point is 01:12:34 end of his career doing like C movies. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or something. You know, zombies from Mars attack America. And there's Tom Hanks. Hey, I'm an alien. How you doing? I don't want to see that.
Starting point is 01:12:47 I don't want to see my stars end up at a, you know, on a second level. I don't like it. I mean, he did sign a... Do you want to see me as an American icon, Joy, doing Winnebago commercials in Omaha weekend sportscaster? I'm an American icon. I need to protect my brain. And if that's what makes your heart happy, Colin.
Starting point is 01:13:06 Colin Coward for Omaha's best Winnebago store. I don't want to do that. I mean, if they pay you $25 million to three years, what do you think about it? I'd be on a Winnebago by this afternoon. If they paid me $25 million. I've always loved a good Winnebago. Especially in the middle of the summer in Omaha. Beautiful.
Starting point is 01:13:29 All right. Good stuff. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Her. I want to do buy. Sell or hold and Karan Butler next.
Starting point is 01:13:38 We got a huge segment. My staff is making a Kauai Leonard Stel shoe commercial, I'm told. I love my staff. We're loaded. Don't go anywhere. David Spade comedian last hour. It's the herd. Car shopping's confusing. A lot of terms. Dealer price, list price.
Starting point is 01:13:53 True car shows what other people paid for the car you want. New or used, true car.com. I'm the stock broker. You got stock. Do you buy it? Do you sell it? Do you hold it? It's buy, sell, or hold. Let's roll it. Time to
Starting point is 01:14:06 Buy, sell. Colin will decide if he'll buy it. Sell. Watch it at sell. Or hold. Here we go, John. Buy seller haul. The 49ers will have a better record than the Patriots this season.
Starting point is 01:14:21 Well, I'm a big believer, John. Give me the quarterbacks you are facing. We know Garoppolo and Brady are good. Brady is the greatest of all time. Garoppolo is a very, very, very potentially good quarterback. Who do they face? Well, in his own division, Garoppolo has to face Russell Wilson twice, and Jared Goff and Sean McJet Bay joined at the hip twice.
Starting point is 01:14:44 And by the way, I think Josh Rosen and Sam Bradford, although most people don't know what they are yet, that's a pretty good combo. And by the way, Vegas has the Niners at eight and a half, has the Patriots at 11 over-under. So John, sell, sell, sell. Niners are a year away from being special. They'll be good, but in the tougher NFC, facing Cousin, Stafford, Rivers, Rogers, Gough twice, Wilson,
Starting point is 01:15:08 they're going to win fewer games than New England. By Seller Hole, the Patriots will not have a first round by for the first time since 2009. Listen, when's the last time the Patriots were rebuilding their offensive line? Okay, this doesn't happen. Tom Brady hasn't always had great receivers, great backs, great defenses, great secondaries, and great edge rushers. The two things Tom Brady has always had.
Starting point is 01:15:32 a good offensive coordinator and a really above average offensive line, and they are rebuilding it. And the AFC is better. So John, buy, bye, bye, by, by. Patriots will not have a first round by. 10 and 6 win their division in the improved AFC. By Seller Hold, Todd Gurley will rush for more yards than Ezekiel Elliott. I think Todd Gurley is a really great back.
Starting point is 01:15:55 I think he and Ezekiel Elliott are the two most talented running backs in the national football league. But here's the difference. Dallas lost Jason Whitten and Des Bryant, and they brought in possession receivers. Okay, they're going to have to run the football to be successful. Jared Goff got another good wide receiver, Brandon Cooks. And my takeaway is Sean McVeigh is more of a stretch-the-field coordinator. He wants to throw the ball more than Jason Garrett does. Jason Garrett tends to be conservative as an offensive guy.
Starting point is 01:16:28 He's a more conservative guy. Sean McVeigh went to Les Sneed and said, we lost Sammy Watkins. I need another Sammy Watkins. So John... Sell, sell, sell. Todd Gurley will not rush for as many yards as Ezekiel Elliott
Starting point is 01:16:41 because the culture of the Rams will be more vertical and more passing-centric than the Cowboys' Run-Centric Jason Garrett conservative offense. By Seller Hold, Levyon Bell will not play for the Steelers after this season. Well, as Agent said, it's probably the last year. And I think what the Steelers did by offering him, according to reports, a low ball offer, is they really sent a message.
Starting point is 01:17:04 We're over you. Now, remember this about Todd Gurley. When Todd Gurley doesn't rush for 100 yards, the Rams in the last couple years are sub-500. When Levian Bell, by the way, missed 14 games a couple years ago, the Steelers went 10 and 4 without him on the field. So John, bye, bye, bye, Labian Bell's last year in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 01:17:26 Hope it's a memorable one. Last one, buy seller hold. The Lakers will have more wins than the Rockets this season. LeBron James generally makes rosters work. Now, the question is, Rondo, Lance Stevenson, Javelle McGee, Michael Beasley. Those guys are in the weeds, man. Those guys are crazy, man. Those guys aren't going to work.
Starting point is 01:17:45 They're one-year deals. I think Carmel to the Rockets is problematic. They are going to be significantly worse on the defensive end. Trevor Reza gone. Luke Mombate gone. By the way, Clint Capella's not signed yet. They're still trying to figure out what to do with that. They lose defensive flexibility.
Starting point is 01:18:05 They lose defensive talent, John. Buy, bye, bye. I think the Lakers end up slightly better than the Rockets next year. By Seller Holden, with that Karan Butler, 14 NBA seasons, a first-round pick, a two-time NBA All-Star. Let's start with that. Let's just start with that one. I think the Rockets chemistry is an issue. Am I crazy?
Starting point is 01:18:25 I think Carmel is not great for. chemistry. First of all, how you doing, Joy? Morning, Karam. Good morning. I think it's going to be a little different just because Trevor Reza brings so much to that team and to that organization. He brought so much.
Starting point is 01:18:41 So with him being gone, it is going to be chemistry issues and things like that. Is Carmelo going to come off the bench? Will he be a starter? Is he okay with less shots and opportunities? Do he want to prove everybody that he's still a major, player in this space. LeBron James just got rewarded a four-year deal, you know, and Chris Paul just got awarded it. Kevin Love this got awarded a deal. Like, like, I don't know what space he's at, but I can tell you what. He's going to be productive on the offensive end, but it will be different
Starting point is 01:19:13 on the defensive end of the floor. Let's shift to the Lakers. One year deals for Rondo, one-year deal for Lance, one-year deal for Beasley, one-year deal Javail McGee. People are freaking out. You've been in the locker room with a couple of those guys, haven't you? Yeah, I like it. You know, I like it because, you know, it's a sense of urgency when you have guys on a one-year deal. You know, expiring contract. What? You're not going to get too comfortable. You're on notice.
Starting point is 01:19:39 This is an audition slash interview process of you playing with the greatest player on the planet at the time right now, LeBron James, and you have to perform at a high level. So you're going to be on your best behavior. You're going to be at your best shooting the basketball, performance, analytical. standpoint, like you're going to be on point on all across the board. Beasley had his best offensive year ever. Rondo was great in the playoffs. I think people are forgetting Rondo and Beasley can play.
Starting point is 01:20:06 Yeah, they can play extremely well. Like, Rondo has shown people that he's turned the corner ever since Sacramento. You know, he came back. I had the luxury of playing with him in the locker room with him. He was an extremely educational guy, like teaching DeMarcus cousins, taking the young guys, Ben McElmore and all those guys under his wing and doing film study and things like that. And it hasn't changed.
Starting point is 01:20:30 The first thing that they said in the press conference is that when Rondo signed with the Lakers, he said, where's the film guy? Like, who does that? You know what I mean? Like, that's where his mind is that. Listen, Rondo is difficult, but I tend to be okay.
Starting point is 01:20:45 A lot of times in sports caron, if you're demanding and you're different. And if you're serious, it's a locker room of 20-year-olds. You're different. I think Rondo is just different and serious and academic. and I think it rubs some guys the wrong way.
Starting point is 01:20:58 Yeah, he's different, he's challenging and he's insightful. You know what I mean? Because, you know, he demands information. And some people don't like that. A lot of people don't like that. I mean, I gulet. He doesn't want to listen to me. It's a big problem on the show.
Starting point is 01:21:11 Okay, LeBron and Kobe, I've been hearing this thing. Oh, God, it's a big rivalry. And in Los Angeles, and I'm like, LeBron and Kobe weren't rivals, were they? You're a player, were they? No, I don't think so. I think that, listen, Kobe passed the tour. to him. Kobe was the best player on the planet for many years. And then LeBron came up after him. And then now he has it. And he's going to have to eventually pass it to KD or Steph or whoever it may be.
Starting point is 01:21:38 And that's going to be the case. I think rivals is what you see with Golden State and what you saw with Cleveland. You know, like you look at the law. You're an obstacle. Yeah, you're an obstacle in a way for me reaching my goal or my destiny. And, you know, Steph Curry has three of those titles. He was an obstacle in LeBron. way. You know what I mean? So like you look at that situation and that's what I see. But you've never seen LeBron in Kobe Way when he was trying to, you know, get titles. Like he was chasing ghosts. You got five titles. By the way, how do you see Kauai Leonard doesn't talk, wouldn't play, now to Toronto, can't get a shoe deal? What do you tell you about Kauai? Do they think he's weird? No, I think he leaves by example. And I think now more so than any, you're starting to see more
Starting point is 01:22:23 things. With Danny Green talking about his injury and things like that, he led by doing exactly what he's supposed to do, getting a second opinion, getting evaluated, reevaluate it, and just trying to be a better version of himself, get completely healthy, take care of his temple. He's not weird by doing that. I think it's weird when you talk too much. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:22:42 Who is the quietest guy that you played with that just didn't talk? Jason Kidd. Jason Kidd didn't talk too much. You know, when he when he, when he, when he, when he talked. he commanded a room when he said go to that spot or hey I'm going to get you open look for the ball uh throw ahead or like it was a message behind everything he said you know like he didn't talk too much he didn't drown you out with information what about Kobe he used to talk with his play with his play Kobe was a talker yeah he used to talk with his play and if you
Starting point is 01:23:19 wasn't performing at a high level he'll let you know about it because he needs to you to be a better version of yourself in order for him to do what he needed. What about Chris Paul? Always talking. And I love that about him because some people, you know, some people didn't like that information though. But he has a high IQ at a game of basketball.
Starting point is 01:23:36 And when you're playing with the younger guys, you have to continue to communicate because you have to continue to plant those seeds. And they don't like the delivery of the information. If you're hitting the battle, you gotta say something like, hey man, get, you know, you, you know what, over there. Guys don't like hearing that information like that. They want you to tone it down a little bit.
Starting point is 01:23:55 Hey, you know, next time you get to the spot, please, you know, like those that you can't talk like that in the heat of the game. Oh, God. Please. That's your guys. Get over there. Set a screen, rookie. I wouldn't get along with NBA players. You got to demand stuff. I told my kid yesterday, I swore it my son.
Starting point is 01:24:12 It's part of it. Huh? It's part of it. Thank you. You can swear it your son. Yeah, you can throw it out there. I got my god's son here. I swore him on the way over here. Yeah, what was he doing? Yeah, slow. man hey less slow stuff
Starting point is 01:24:26 for me my son I had to tell him I said hey do you brush your teeth and he's like oh I'll get to it I'm like hey toothbrush water you there now I demanded it I like it Joy are you are you
Starting point is 01:24:42 are you verbal like in a room yes are you yes yes in the makeup room in the morning you're very quiet Well, I have a certain amount of energy for the day. You know what I mean? So I just conserve my energy.
Starting point is 01:24:57 I'm very protective of my energy. But when energy is dispersed, it's very powerful. Karam Butler, everybody. Comedian David Spade's got a hysterical new movie. Absolutely hysterical. Comedian David Spade around the corner at the Hurt Hour 3. Thanks, bud. I'm watching at tonight.
Starting point is 01:25:13 Ah, hour number three, baby. This is The HARD. Live in Los Angeles, wherever you know. may be and however you may be listening. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Joy Taylor's joining me. We've had a very rambunctious show today. Very rambunctious. I just had a friend of mine in the NBA
Starting point is 01:25:31 an executive say Nike Air Stealth. I love it. He likes my Kauai Leonard's shoe. The staff has put together a Kauai Leonard's shoe commercial for later in the show Best for Last. We're just doing it. We're just
Starting point is 01:25:47 doing all the work for Nike, huh? We are. By the way, actor comedian. David Spade, good dude. Funny, funny, dude. Got a new movie out that I've been told by somebody who went to it. It's a riot. He's one of the few comedians you just put on the air. He was on Howard Stern the other day.
Starting point is 01:26:03 He's just got great stories. He's got a paparazzi thing. They're on him all the time. So I'm going to have David Spade on in 15 minutes. Okay, hour number three. Yesterday, Todd Gertie got his big new deal. But Labian Bell, the Steelers, is still looking for his. Here's why.
Starting point is 01:26:19 A message. teams and businesses send messages all the time. How they treat one employee, they send a message to the other employees. How they lowball this employee, they send a message to other employees. It happens in every business I've ever worked in. Todd Gurley yesterday for the Rams, news broke on our show, got a record-setting deal. Not just a new contract, a record-setting deal. shatters the way running backs are paid.
Starting point is 01:26:51 Guaranteed money was massive. Levian Bell was low-balled by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it leaked to the press. Isn't that interesting? Stuff leaks when somebody wants it leaked. The Steelers did. Those moves were not just about football. I do believe Gurley is more valuable than Rams and Jared Goff,
Starting point is 01:27:13 young quarterback than Levian is to the Steelers in Hall of Fame quarterback Big Ben. But Todd Gurley's had no suspension. no drugs, no holdouts, no calling out his team to the press. Lavian Bell's had suspensions and injuries and drugs and holdouts and bad press. Todd Gurley has frankly been the better employee, and his bosses not only rewarded him, they gave him a little more than the position usually is worth. This is why NBC chose Jay Leno over David Letterman.
Starting point is 01:27:43 Critics preferred lettermen, artists, comedians preferred lettermen. But if you ever read the book by Bill Carter about Leno and Letterman, and it was an HBO movie, it was fantastic, actually. The story is they were deciding one day in Florida. They had a big meeting all the execs at NBC. And NBC was owned by a company called GE. And Bob Wright was the president and CEO of GE. And he flew down after days of negotiating.
Starting point is 01:28:09 Leto, Letterman, Letterman, Leno, Leto, Letterman, Leno, Lettow, Letterman, Letterman, Lenin. Who do you choose? Bob Wright walked in quickly and said, who's a better guy? Who do you want to be in business? with the next decade. Who's easier to work with? We're our affiliates. And they're like, Leno. And Bob Wright goes, all right, let's do it with Leno. They're both good. Let's go with Leno. Walked out. Todd Gurley's the better guy to work with. The better teammate, better in the huddle. Not going to call out the team. More adult, fewer headaches, less baggage.
Starting point is 01:28:39 For all you, for all you millennials out there, I know you want to change the world, man. I'm going to push back an authority, man. I'm going to have a voice, man. I'm going to create my system, man. I'm going to push back, man. I know that's cool, but here's what's cooler. $45 million in your own private jet. That's cooler. It matters. Be a good teammate. Don't always push back.
Starting point is 01:29:05 And if you want to push back, at least push in the direction of the organization's wishes. By the way, Chris Carter first things first this morning. He talked about why Gurley got more than Lavian Bell. Record setting to a humiliating offer. The difference between him and El Bell is it's not the big plays. It's not who's a better receiver. One guy's in the drug program and one guy's not.
Starting point is 01:29:27 So why would I give $57 million to a guy that potentially is looking at one more slip-up and he's going to face another significant suspensions? As you look at these running backs and you start trying to reset the market, you better also check what's the character and what does the league and that organization do they trust them? because I believe that Todd Gurley, this is one of the few times we talked about Todd Gurley, he already got his money, and we've been talking about El Bell for over two years.
Starting point is 01:29:56 Thank you from a Hall of Fame player, from a Hall of Fame player. Let me shift gears. Religions need a face. Every religion, religions in the Far East, religions in the Middle East, Christianity, religion has to have a face, right?
Starting point is 01:30:21 Something to grab on to, something to relate to. My entire life in sports, I've seen old crusty, rigid coaches fall in love with themselves and not understand what makes those old crusty legendary Hall of Fame coaches work is a star player that sells their religion, that sells their message, that lubricates the locker room. Greg Popovich has said before he only drafts players who have gotten over themselves. Seems to me Greg Popovich could use his own advice. Interesting story yesterday.
Starting point is 01:31:00 Danny Green from the Spurs. Now a Raptor came out and said, yeah, I kind of empathize with Kauai Leonard. Like I played and I was hurt and I wanted a second opinion with the Spurs doctors. Oh my God. another spur calling out the system. In the last year, Lamarcus Aldridge, get me out of here. Kauai Leonard, I'm not playing. Danny Green. Yeah, they're doctors in San Antonio.
Starting point is 01:31:26 I'm not saying they're bad, but, you know, I mean, I should have had a second opinion. I played injured. Isn't that interesting? When did all this start happening when the face of Pop's religion, Tim Duncan, retired? Antonio Daniels on my show last week lives in San Antonio, said the same thing. If you just look at what has transpired in San Antonio over the past two years since Tim Duncan retired, the Marcus Argers wanted out. He wanted out.
Starting point is 01:31:57 And then Kauai wanted out. None of these were issues when Tim Duncan was in San Antonio. He put a bubble around them. So they never had to deal with the drama and issues that the other 29 NBA teams had to deal with. Tim Duncan was the shield. Tim Duncan was the buffer to rigid, loud Greg Popovich. He sold Popp's religion to the players. Hey, Tim Duncan says it's the way to go.
Starting point is 01:32:23 He's the best player by far in our team in our city, division, league. Tim says it so. He was the Messiah. Interesting yesterday in New England. Old veteran near 70-year-old coach. Bill Belichick got major push back. from the media on the Malcolm Butler story. Much like Duncan, Tom Brady sold Belichick's crusty,
Starting point is 01:32:52 My Way or the Highway religion for years. Belichick benches Malcolm Butler during the Super Bowl and doesn't tell Tom Brady any explanation. Doesn't give him one. And Tom, this offseason, Danny Amandola, Tom Brady Gronkel taking shots, not showing up to OTAs, let me out of here. I'll do it on my terms.
Starting point is 01:33:13 Oh, same thing happened. Duncan and Brady, like Tom Cruise in Scientology, gave Popovich and Belichick's religion a face. Duncan's gone, and Belichick no longer has Brady's absolute devotion to be the messenger. Tom now, Tom has his own religion. It's called the TB12 Clinic. Join, get bigger and stronger and last for, forever. Yep. I'm saying Belichick and Popovich are still really good and they're going to win a bunch of games,
Starting point is 01:33:52 but they're no longer unstoppable forces and they're no longer gatekeepers to championships. Coming up next, he's got a new movie. It's outrageously funny. He's one of the comedians that shows up every time and we just sit back, laugh, talk stuff. And you ever met David Spade, Joy? I have not, no. Good dude. He'll have a little. He'll be a little. He'll He always says, hey, I'm a total sports dude. I'm going to dominate you. He's not really a sports dude. He's funny as hell. It's on Howard Stern.
Starting point is 01:34:26 Bing was. Who was? Bing was. He knew his stuff. Yeah. You know, we don't do a ton of non-sport stuff. David Spade always got an invitation. Ving Rangam's was great today.
Starting point is 01:34:36 Mission Impossible opens Friday. Go watch it. I'll be there at a theater. Maybe the one you're at. Oh. Yeah. You know, you're going to watch it? Are you going to put an area code around it?
Starting point is 01:34:44 No. But I'm going to go see Mission Apollable. Free popcorn, maybe? Yeah, my son's totally into it. It looks great. Yeah, it does. Using TrueCar, you can easily find what you want. We talked about True Car for a long time.

Friday on FS1, Toronto welcomes some of the biggest names in basketball for this week's big three battles. The three on three on three games begin at 8 p.m. Eastern on FS1 or stream it live on the Fox Sports app. There's Birdman, Chris Anderson. He was in Miami when you were there.
Starting point is 01:36:08 Yes, he's beloved in Miami. Is he beloved? Oh, yeah. It's a good time. Really? But he's like a character, you know. He is kind of crazy. So is David Spade.
Starting point is 01:36:16 75 acting credits. He was in the 1990s, Lauren Michael, Saturday Night Live. One of the truly funny guys, and I love him when he comes on our show, David Spade. Hey. You are, you know what? No, first time, long time. Yes. Last time you sat on that, you know, I've seen you three or four times.
Starting point is 01:36:36 You hate that couch. I don't like this thing. Bring it. I can't move it. I just pulled my quad. No, this couch is great. I'm glad you got my Z-Gallery gift certificate. I put it to use.
Starting point is 01:36:50 Colin, it's great to see you. I love it here. I listen to the show all the time. No, you're not a sports guy. That's what I like about you. You're not big sports guy. No, no one's going to buy that. But I do watch it.
Starting point is 01:37:02 You know, I like it. I'm more... You know, you're very... Every time I see you, the beautiful woman, and paparazzi. The paparazzi, TMZ, love you. Is it ever a pain in the ass? Yeah, I mean, well, last summer I went to a, I was in Hawaii for a show and I was in the pool with some girl and stupidly we were like hugging or something dumb. Meanwhile, I look like gross in every picture.
Starting point is 01:37:29 They're always like baffled, you know, fine. So that's always one part of it. Like the girl's pretty, I'm gross, you know, that's sort of the story. That's really the headline. You don't even have to read it. And then, but I was in the pool. she floated over for like 10 seconds, we hugged or something dumb. Anyway, picture, I don't know how they got it, in the pool inside the hotel.
Starting point is 01:37:50 So it's all over on 50 websites. I get home and I go to my place I eat for breakfast all the time. And my German waiter, who's my buddy, goes, hey, how was your weekend, huh? And I go, oh, yeah, all right. And he goes, a little fun in the sun, huh? I go, yeah, okay. Little pool party. I go, yeah, he goes, I saw a picture of you.
Starting point is 01:38:11 I go, yeah, I get it. I get what's going on. we all saw it and then he goes oh but then you get out of the pool you get such a big gut why do you take such horrible pictures I go what
Starting point is 01:38:23 and he goes I mean don't you want better pictures of you because they're so gross the one I go dude do you get how it works I don't pick do you understand they want a bad picture of me well it doesn't take them long shoot three pictures
Starting point is 01:38:37 pick the worst one but it's literally I go they have a contact sheet with a jeweler's loop and they go he looks good here good here this one fat and gross run with it so I go from the front I'm not bad from the side I'm well who looks good from the side I know and by the way I'm not being 38 now it's just very tough just keep nobody Google it keep going you you have you actually came out with something that's brilliant and I don't know whose idea this was I've written two books they're hard yeah it's ditch digging radio oh god's the worst you came out with just an audio book so you don't do any
Starting point is 01:39:10 writing you're like I just want to do the audio book a bit. That was the idea. Believe me, I wanted to skim through it. But then I wrote it. Why did you do that? Because they told me to, why did I listen? I just wanted to go in the booth and go, I'm funny. Hey, bap, beep, boop, but I had to get it down. So I literally still have a book. Oh, the audio's the easy part. But when I, audio is easy for you. And some people hate it because to sit there and talk and read it, even though you know it and you wrote it, it's very, took me two weeks. Oh, it's so rough. And I'm, reading my, man, am I write different than I read?
Starting point is 01:39:45 That's why when I, I wrote the book, and you try to be smarter with words. Yeah. You know, here I'm like, blah, blah. And then all of a sudden there's words. You're like, oh, these are like, they don't disappear into the ether. Right. So you have to use. It's thought out.
Starting point is 01:39:55 Yeah, you want to have commas and stuff. Yes. And I read it with the wrong inflection. Then I got to go back. Even though I wrote it myself, I go, what did I mean here? Oh, yeah, yeah. But I did it. I think I was the first one.
Starting point is 01:40:06 I think because I go, my audio book on my last real book, which I was here for, did well on audio. and I didn't even know about audio. So I go, oh, what don't I just do straight to audio? Maybe that's better. Yeah. And then I called it Audible. And they said, yeah, we'll try that. So I just did it straight there.
Starting point is 01:40:21 It's number two this week. They just told me. New York Times. So I just said, number two. Oh, I love it. So they told me last night. So I go, oh, my God. People are buying this.
Starting point is 01:40:31 So. But there's one funny thing on there because I think you're, you're not as old as me. But you remember Tommy Boy? You remember Farley, right? Because do I remember Tommy Boy? Dude, it goes, if there's, if there's honestly, and I'm dead serious, I would tell you. In fact, I got into this conversation on a plane with a buddy not long ago. We said five funniest movies of your life.
Starting point is 01:40:52 And number one for all the guys was the one with Zach Galvanakis, Vegas. Hangover was number one. Hangover was great. And about most of the guys thought Tommy Boy was two. Oh, it's interesting toward the front. Oh, my God, it's iconic. Oh, I love it. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:41:07 Now, by the way, did you know when you're doing a movie? Yeah. You've done 75. Farley is obviously funny, but he could be a little bit of a wreck. I mean, he was all over, right? Did you know in the middle of it? Oh, Christ, this is great. Well, I know in the middle of it, it's great for us.
Starting point is 01:41:22 Like, we are cracking up. It was our own movie. Lauren said, you two are funny at work. Why don't you do a movie? So, you know, they wrote it up. We go to Toronto. Nobody's on us. Paramount doesn't care.
Starting point is 01:41:34 They're like sort of a favor for Lauren. Like, he has a deal. Put Fatty and Skinny up in Toronto see what comes up, shake him up a bit. So we go up there and we do it. And then like if the scenes felt a little flat, we're like, what if we do like try fat guy and a look at?
Starting point is 01:41:51 Just stuff we did it on the office. Sure. Or when I'd go to his door every morning, I'd go, we're at the four seasons. And I go, housekeeping. And then he go, no. And I go, housekeeping. Neat pillow.
Starting point is 01:42:03 And he's like, what? No. And I go, then he opens up. He goes, oh, it's you. I go, dude, I do this every single day. You've never figured out once. At our call time, it's me again. Plus, Bo Derek, Rob Lowe.
Starting point is 01:42:14 It had a campy, funny, hysterical, odd. I mean, listen, it's, that movie has got me into so many restaurants. Do you have a Chris Farley story I don't know about? Well, I do know that on the audio book, not to plug that, and not to dine out and far, I don't talk about Farley all the time anymore. People tell me, oh, you know, that was your best movie, of course. You should have stopped there. I go, why would I stop there?
Starting point is 01:42:39 but anyway I go You're like 38. And listen, in fairness, working with the great Chris was a gift, but I have to keep doing stuff. But I, and the audio book,
Starting point is 01:42:52 I threw in this thing, Jody, my buddies here with me from Arizona and when we were in Arizona during Planet Hollywood opening, remember those? Yes. Great chicken fingers.
Starting point is 01:43:01 If you ever get a chicken. But I went there because they brought everyone in for the opening. And Farls and I came and Jody liked motivational speaker. So I go, hey, Farley, you met Jody at the show. I go, well, you call him and do motivational speaker.
Starting point is 01:43:17 So he calls Jody, oh, are you good, good? He does the whole thing on his machine. Jody just finds it on his laptop two months ago. While I'm doing my audiobook, and I go, dude, send it to me. I'm in the booth. I listen to it. I go, can we record this? Can we put it on the book?
Starting point is 01:43:32 So it's in the book. So I have like a minute-long him of doing something no one's ever heard. And it's so cool. It gives you the chills because it's so exactly him at the height of motivational speaker. He's laughing at it. I'm telling him he's doing it wrong in the background. It's funny. Let me ask you this, David.
Starting point is 01:43:49 When you came up, you came up with some Chris Rocks and Adam Sandler. Yeah. All these guys. Did you know at the time Sandler would be the rich one? Like he'd become the, isn't he the rich one? It's a good question. He said he wanted to be like Eddie Murphy big. And he wasn't being cocky.
Starting point is 01:44:10 He just goes, we all love Eddie. And I was like, wow, I wouldn't even have aspirations that high. I couldn't believe I was on SNL. I wasn't always wanting to be a comedian. I wasn't, I sort of stumbled into it, and then I just liked it. And I said, I'll just do this on my life. If I make enough to pay my bills, that's a success.
Starting point is 01:44:28 If I'm not borrowing from people, if I just can do what I want, and scoot around and cover my own stuff, then I'm fine. And then it got a little better as I went on, but S&L was so overwhelming, I thought that was impossible under being a movie, impossible. So Sandler, very driven, very smart, very funny, had a lot of moves, knew what he wanted. I don't think I would have predicted he'd be this unbelievably rich.
Starting point is 01:44:54 Well, he's rich, rich, like Bob Hope is one of those guys. You're like, oh, Bob Hope owned Palm Spring. Like Dick Clark. Yes. Dick Clark was like, you know, everybody knew Johnny Carson was rich, and you're like, oh, Dick, by you want to know who's the richest guy that nobody knows in America today? in your business? Well,
Starting point is 01:45:08 Byron Allen. Oh, he is rich. Yeah, Byron Allen. He told me. I saw him the other day. Yeah, he's worth like $600 million. Yeah, if I had his money, I'd throw mine away. But I remember when I saw when Sandler, by the one, back then you didn't have how much are they worth on Google?
Starting point is 01:45:23 He just had to go, Bob Hope is rich. And then you just took his worry. Oh, he is? Okay. But now you find out to the penny what everyone has. But Sandler got really rich. But he always helped us, which was nice. But Rock.
Starting point is 01:45:37 Always rich, goes out on a tour, rakes it in. Everybody there, you know, when I wrote there, everyone was so good. I expected miracles from everyone. That's why it was so hard. Conan O'Brien was a writer. He's genius. You know, Bob Odenkirk, so funny and smart. He's just a writer trying to be a performer.
Starting point is 01:45:59 Robert Smigel, genius, Jack Handy, deep thoughts, all that stuff. These are my, these are I'm competing with every day to write. John Stewart was around, but he wasn't doing. He wasn't right then. He wasn't? Not with me. Norm MacDonald. And then I'm writing against Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller.
Starting point is 01:46:14 Holy God. Sandler. Rock. Everyone's so funny that just for me to get a blip on the radar was a gift. So to get out of there, once I got out of there, I go, oh, it was like Marines where I could be at least one of the top funniest people in the room after that. But when I'm there, you're just treading water, you know. So I get out there.
Starting point is 01:46:34 It was great training. So I had to think faster. When you're talking to rock at dinner, you have to think of the joke after the joke you're about to say because he's going to know that one's coming. So you just get trained to be better. It sounds stupid, but it's kind of true. No, you hang out with smart talent and people. You get smart and- Makes everyone better.
Starting point is 01:46:49 Yeah, it's absolutely. Who's your closest friend in comedy? Weird out. No. Weird out. I'm kidding. I don't know him. No.
Starting point is 01:47:00 I love musical gimmick guy. I don't know. I don't know. I still see rock and sand are probably the most. I love them. They're great guys. I see, oh, LeBron's going to be my new friend. Oh, wait time out. What?
Starting point is 01:47:13 He's going to be my new friend. Well, I don't know. I'm going to DM. He likes, you know, he is, he actually has some comedic timing. I saw LeBron in a movie. He was a Bill's hater or something. And he was actually, he was kind of funny. Train Riz.
Starting point is 01:47:24 Yeah, he was in, uh, he was okay. Yeah. But he'll be my friend because he'll be out here. Actually, I do not like to hang out with guys that tall, to be honest. Well, yeah. I look, I look so shimpy with normal people. Yeah. That I used to hang with Barkley during the Suns.
Starting point is 01:47:37 Yeah. And then I gave up. But let me ask you this. When you're a comedian. How do you, no, no, no. When you're a comedian. When you're a comedian. And now I can't act.
Starting point is 01:47:51 Like I don't have the ability to act. I can't act. So because, okay. So you're a comedian. Jerry Seinfeld used to say this. Like he was like, I am the world's worst actor. If I said to you right now, you're a comedian. You have comedic time.
Starting point is 01:48:04 And I said, okay, Spade, right now, you're a criminal. You're walking in. Can you shift and do it? Go for it. No. I played the same guy for the last 22 years. That's what I thought. So you can't, so you don't consider yourself an actor.
Starting point is 01:48:20 Well, listen, it's sort of easy. I mean, people go as acting easy. It's not that hard. Like, I mean, what I do, I'm not out there with De Niro. But that girl, there was a girl, you know, precious. That was the first movie. Yeah. She won an Oscar for it.
Starting point is 01:48:36 First movie. Yeah. And then Jody Foster was in Paper Moon at five years old. She won an Oscar. We had five. And there's Jennifer Hudson. She's on American Idol. She's the thing she studied her whole life for singing, she got 12th place.
Starting point is 01:48:49 She can't even win. Steps over to acting wins an Oscar a first time. How hard is it? Yeah, good point. It's not that hard. It's like me joining the NBA, and I'm like, it doesn't look that hard. Then I'm the best guy in the whole league the first time. It's like, you won an Oscar?
Starting point is 01:49:02 I've been doing this. Nobody could go on stage. first comedic presentation and kill it. No. Acting maybe, but no. First time you were on stage doing comedy was the laugh hut in Tempe. Very close. Giggles in Tucson. Gutbusters in Nebraska.
Starting point is 01:49:19 Was it? No, but it was close. They're all very close. Did you have a first joke? I think I said, hey, because I looked younger, I go, I just got here. My mom dropped me off. She'll be back in a few minutes. She's at Ralph's. And then I said, I bought a new car. It's not really new.
Starting point is 01:49:39 It's an old UPS truck. I got to park wherever I want. That's not bad. Excellent first joke. That's not bad. Very clever. Then it was downhill from there. But it took me a long time to get even 10 minutes.
Starting point is 01:49:50 Of course. Comedy is hard. So I take it seriously. I'm not a kind of comic. I don't think I'm some top 10 comic because I think to do that. You've got to be a complete grinding machine. You have to be good. That's out.
Starting point is 01:50:05 But I also, I'm not, I don't do politics because it's. Two devices. It's not funny. Yeah, it's two devices. It's not funny. And it's so done right now. Like, if you walk up and say, I hate Trump and then everyone applauds, who cares? Like, just give me something new I haven't seen.
Starting point is 01:50:20 Come on, come, come on. And I don't do race. I mean, there's a lot of things I don't tackle that will make you like an interesting comic, like, buzzed about talking. God, you'd be a bore on Twitter. You don't know politics and race. I know. And I am, believe me, Twitter's plummeting. But I do put selfies, so that's cool.
Starting point is 01:50:38 Oh, that's great. So, hey, join up. Father of the year, it's on Netflix. Oh, by the way, on that, I play a New Hampshire dad. A New Hampshire dad. I had to get a dialect coach. Can you believe me, the worst actor in the world? What's New Hampshire dialect?
Starting point is 01:50:50 It's a combination of New Hampshire and bad acting. You'll see it in the clip. Okay. Here's David Spade, Netflix. Father of the year. It looks like LeBron. Hey, Marty. Oh, this is the dad.
Starting point is 01:51:03 fighting. They told me you were in here. I just need a minute of your time. How do you know six people were murdered here? In this room alone. Come on. Oh, oh. God damn, I never felt anything so strong. Punch was from electric. You're not human. Yeah, it was my taser gun and I will use it again if I have to.
Starting point is 01:51:27 By the way, you didn't do that. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Was that you? Was that you? I took the stun gun. I took the fake stun gun But then the other guy I get in 30 fights in that movie
Starting point is 01:51:41 It's just my stunt man Getting knocked out By the way David Spake Howard Stern He's one of those guys like Letterman He goes home and just hides all day So you don't hang out with him He doesn't hang out with anybody
Starting point is 01:51:54 Sometimes every email or whatever Email that's not hanging out So he does Howard's like Letterman He's a recluse I try to pitch my emailing is hanging out But you caught me He's not
Starting point is 01:52:04 He emails Howard are a close. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, Letterman's like that. Laderman, too. You know, I... Norm McDonald's a little bit like that. One time I wrote Letterman a letter.
Starting point is 01:52:13 You did? Yeah. Why? Wouldn't you be scared to? Yeah, because he's kind of too much. By the way, he's kind of the Prince of Comedy. When I used to do that show, it was one of the first ones I got on. We loved Letterman.
Starting point is 01:52:25 You know, we asked him, we're like, Letterman, even in stand-up. He was just very dry, very cool, you know, didn't care. And so we all were like, Ar-F-R-F-R if we want to be on Letterman and have him like us. So I went on probably 10 times when he was on. But when he would laugh, it was the best. Like if I'd go on the panel and try and he'd just sit back and he'd go, like if I actually cracked him up, that was a big deal. Oh, God, yeah.
Starting point is 01:52:48 Lennon, you were dealing with Iowa people. Like, if you did Leno, it was full of Iowa. Yeah, exactly. You go to do Letterman and it's guys that have combs in the Hamptons and their bar and they're weird and they're snooty and they're, it's a quirky show. I will tell you when I go on these shows, Ellen, who's doing stand-up? Now, again, she's great. She's great.
Starting point is 01:53:07 Letterman, Leno, you know, wherever I am, Fallon. When I think of stuff to talk about, it's always different. So I will only talk about this on Ellen, this dry stuff on Letterman, that would crack him up, I think, or just for his audience. And then this is more for Leno. It's funny because they're all a little different. So what I'm going to try to say on there and talk about, I think I try to tailor it. And it would usually sort of work. Because, you know, Letterman, you can do the, you know, that way.
Starting point is 01:53:34 wispiest jokes that are barely jokes and he appreciates. Yes. But in the other ones, it's just crickets. So you have to sort of know what you're doing. Letterman's the anti-joke. That's why he loves Norm MacDonald. Yeah. Like Norm.
Starting point is 01:53:48 He's got a lot of anti-jokes. Norm. Oh. I'm kidding. No, he's one of my buddies. Every time we have dinner, I go, Norm, are you with us? What's going on? We were on stage.
Starting point is 01:54:00 We did Sandler, Schneider. We all did a tour. Nick Swartz and Norm. and then, you know, Norm's very smart comedian. He's very, very, he gets kind of kooky. And he had one of those nights where it sort of went a little sideways. Schneider gets up because he was hosting and he goes, well, Seattle, you're going to get one norm or the other.
Starting point is 01:54:22 And tonight, you got that one. And then Norm later goes, we have this big group chat. And then he's ragging on wrong. He's like, what was that all about? Yeah, I mean, Norm's different. But he's also, he's also a genius. Highly respected. He was on Letterman's last show.
Starting point is 01:54:36 Yeah. Robin Williams was on Carson's last show. Oh. Yeah. I'll be on yours. Yeah. Which is not long from now. Is it Friday or is that a rumor?
Starting point is 01:54:45 You bring something special for us today since you do a different thing for every show? No. Oh, yeah. This is not really, yeah. This is my A-Stuff, Joe. I brought my A-game. Father of the year, Netflix. I'm going to go to those Lakers games, bud.
Starting point is 01:54:58 Okay, I'll see you there. You get better seats than I do. Yeah, because I'm a showbiz phony. I have the agents that we get in that four seats right in the front by the... I know. I've seen where you sit. I know. Everyone hates it.
Starting point is 01:55:10 You sit in the front row every time. It's so embarrassed. It's obnoxious. And I go, which guys are us? Are we the purple? And then LeBron's going to be there. I think he should, he should, to ingratiate himself, maybe take over the t-shirt gun at half-time. Oh, that'd be great.
Starting point is 01:55:27 Just something. Little things matter. David Spade. Great having you on. Joy Taylor with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. We have hard out to television.
Starting point is 01:55:39 David Spades on the 405. All right, I guess I'll do my slow. Am I staying for the news? Yeah. Or you can say, whatever you feel like. You can sit on the comfortable couch longer. It's Wednesday in the summer. It's Lucy Goosey.
Starting point is 01:55:52 You do what you want. God forgot I waste two seconds of the nine-hour show. Anyway. None of it was wasted. None of it was wasted. Randy Gregory. Great talking. We'll be returning for the first.
Starting point is 01:56:03 first time to the field in 2016. In the hopes of keeping him on the straight and narrow, the cowboys are taking extra precautions, meaning he is not allowed, they are not allowing him to room with a teammate during camp, and said he will share a room with a professional accountability partner. Oh, good God. He's got to be able to grow up. David would like us to know he's still hanging in the studio. By the way, the Cowboys knew Randy Gregory.
Starting point is 01:56:28 They were warned by, I'm not going to say who, but a very legitimate. NFL source warned the Cowboys before they drafted Randy Gregory. He's not ready to play in this league. He's not emotionally ready. So this was a wasted draft pick. And it was a good draft. If I recall, John, it was a first round draft pick. Or first or a second, wasn't he? Wasn't he a good draft?
Starting point is 01:56:49 He was a first round talent, second round pick, and they've got nothing out of him. It's a bummer. I don't have a problem with them doing this, though, because they did make an investment in him and they want him to be successful. So if they feel like they need to put someone with him to quote unquote watch him, and keep him accountable, then that's what they need to do. Speaking of players who are familiar with the Cowboys Babysiders Club, that's Desd Bryant, he appears to receive some interest calling.
Starting point is 01:57:12 Brown's general manager, John Dorsey, says Cleveland has discussed springing Desmond. Do you like Desin Cleveland? You know what? Cleveland, you build from the center out, not the receivers in. Like, you've got enough receivers. Cleveland, receiver isn't a problem for Cleveland. They've got a top 10 receiving course. Start getting centers, left tackles, middle linebackers, edge rushers. They're too consumed with all the sideline perimeter.
Starting point is 01:57:35 It's that low self-esteem stuff. Like, let's get popular. Get good, Cleveland. Like, get interior linemen defensively offensive. I don't care about wide receivers. You got enough of those. Well, unfortunately, for the Browns, all eyes are on them in Cleveland now, because the cavaliers kind of know what they're going to be.
Starting point is 01:57:53 You know, they just signed Kevin Love's, who a four-year deal, $120 million. So you got Baker Mayfield, number one overall draft pick, and he won zero games last year. So they do kind of need some buzz in Cleveland. I mean, I have a lot. I'm from Pittsburgh, so I have an eternal Cleveland hate. Yes. But I do have respect for Cleveland Browns fans.
Starting point is 01:58:12 That's a special type of suffering. First time in three years, I actually like some of their personnel. Like, they've got some nice players here. It's like, but let's not go back to the silliness and trying to get RG3 and trying to get stars and try. Start building your OD lines like Philadelphia. Don't worry about perimeter guys right now. You've got enough of those guys.
Starting point is 01:58:31 I do think they're going to have a better record than last year. Yeah, oh, no, no, no. Yeah, well, they were old in 16, sure. Yeah. That's David's comedy rubbing off on me. Finally, now that Brandon Cooks and Todd Gurley have secured long-term deals from the Rams. Everyone's wondering where Aaron Donald is, and he is not at training camp today. He did not report to Rams training camp today.
Starting point is 01:58:51 He is really the one that everyone expected to get paid. Come on, they paid Brandon Cook's a fortunate wide receiver, and he has. doesn't play the game for him. They need to step up and pay Aaron Donald. They really do. It's a bad look, giving money out to, I think Todd Gurley's money's good. Brandon Cooks has never caught a pass and he gave an extension because he had a good OTA. You've got to pay Aaron Donald. You have to pay Aaron Donald. That's a little bit more to what you were just saying about the Browns paying all these, you know, outside players. You got to keep your core in place. I'm sure that they know this, but, you know, this is his second year holding out. They got to pay him.
Starting point is 01:59:29 Not surprised he's not there. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lying news. Coming up if Michael Jordan thinks he's the king of shoes, he's about to be dethroned by me. Best for last.
Starting point is 01:59:44 Coming up next. Not all multivitamins are created equal. You could choose premium GNC multis because they're clinically proven to make you feel better, save 30% on all GNC multis in store online Thursday through Saturday. See Associate for detail. Starting point is 02:00:01 It's the herd. Car shopping's confusing, a lot of terms, dealer price, list price. True car shows you what you want. Save three grand off MSRP. So earlier today, Joy, we'd have fun show today. David Spade, the comedian, Ving Rames, the actor, Nick Wright, Karam Butler. Best for Last. We do Best for Last, so let's roll the tape on this right now.
Starting point is 02:00:21 After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, Cowherd. It's the best. for last. So, Colleen Leonard, the Jordan brand said yesterday, no thanks, not going to give you a shoe, we're not going to give you the offer you'll want. This is a great player. This is a NBA, NBA finals MVP. This is the best two-way player in the league. This is an all-star. I mean, this is a top three player in the NBA, top four player in the NBA, can't get a shoe deal because he's too quiet and under the radar. So earlier today, I said, you just have to kind of shift the way you
Starting point is 02:00:55 think and you have to do a shoe that fits his brand and his brand is quiet under the radar secretive defense black and gray because of the spurs and i called it the stealth shoe and i said you know if somebody would have told you you're going to do a hip-hop version of the founding father of america alexander hamilton nobody would buy the script it was an absolute decade best sensation in new york did you see it uh no i have not seen it yet everybody i know seen it so I will see it. It's awesome. Yeah. So it's supposed to be just magnificent. So you've got to change the way you think. And so I've actually had feedback from people in the NBA and they're like, this is actually kind of clever. So the shoe would be called the stealth. He is quiet,
Starting point is 02:01:37 defense secretive under the radar, which is the American defense system, the stealth. And so I revealed the show earlier today. We got a lot of feedback from people even in the league. So I thought, you know what? Let's make this work. Let's do a commercial for the stealth. You can't sell a shoe without a shoe commercial. James Hardin has a shoe commercials. Chris Paul. LeBribe guy shoe commercial.
Starting point is 02:02:01 So here is our, not only did we develop the stealth brand, which you can have for free, here's the first stealth commercial for Kauai Leonard's shoe. Most sneakers are flashy. They tell people, hey, everybody, look at me. It's time for a sneaker. that says, don't look at me. In fact, I'd prefer if you don't even know that I'm here.
Starting point is 02:02:30 Stealth by Kauai Leonard, the ultimate sneaker. Joy? What do you make of that? Did you see Black Panther? No, that's supposed to be good, too. It's wonderful. They make a sneaker in Black Panther. That's why I'm laughing, because it just reminded me of that.
Starting point is 02:02:53 It's like a, so you can sneak up. It's completely soundproof. By the way. Mekonda forever. If you don't like that commercial, we're giving you a second alternative commercial. Oh. Yeah, like, like if that didn't work for you,
Starting point is 02:03:07 if you don't like our brilliant idea, it was, our brilliant shoe design, it is. The name, awesome. Our first commercial, we have a second commercial. He's the most secretive player in the NBA. He flies so. under the radar that even his own coach couldn't figure out where he went for the last three months of the season. Stealth by Kauai Leonard, a shoe so under the radar, maybe it'll be at the shoe store. Maybe it won't.
Starting point is 02:03:39 We just don't know. I don't know. I kind of like it. Hey man. Gangsters move in silence. Do millennials know what the stealth is? Do we know what the stealth is? Well, you and I know what a stealth is because we're, you know, over 27 years old. over 27. Stealth used to be in the news like a decade ago, like, you know, Middle Eastern War, like all the time. I'm pretty sure they've upgraded the technology since the stealth. But I still like the name, though. By the way, Jason Ender in the back put the Kauai shoe stuff together. Way to go, Jason Ender.
Starting point is 02:04:10 Good job, Jason. It wasn't a career ender, which I thought it could be for me when I did it like two and a half hours ago. It was not. Good stuff today. By the way, I thought this was funny. I'm driving around yesterday. This is fine.
Starting point is 02:04:23 We always crush Kevin Durant. Warriors lose in the finals. Small market Kevin Durant goes to Oakland. That's totally unfair. Ruin the NBA. So a trading deadline in baseball. Dodgers got to the World Series last year.
Starting point is 02:04:41 They've won five straight division titles. Lead again. And they went to a little small market Baltimore and took their best player, Mani Machado. Everybody in baseball is like, yeah, Dodgers. Awesome. I can't weigh. Very exciting.
Starting point is 02:04:53 Yankees, by the way, 27 World Series crowns, richest team in American sports, $400 million annual cable TV network deal, go and take the Orioles, tiny small market Baltimore, Orioles best relief arm, their best closer. By the way, the Yankees already have the number one
Starting point is 02:05:14 remated bullpen in Major League Baseball, big market glamorous New York, 27 titles, go to crappy Baltimore and take their best arm for a bunch of nobody cares prospects. Everybody in baseball. Yeah. Love it. Awesome.
Starting point is 02:05:26 Can't weigh World Series Yankee. Huh? So in baseball, where there's no salary cap, and the reason the Yankees and the Dodgers are good because free agents choose them because they're more glamorous and pay more money. They can simply pay more money. There is no salary cap in baseball. The Dodgers and Yankees have TV deals.
Starting point is 02:05:44 They can pay more money, charge more for seats, charge more for suites. And everybody is okay with them both going to cruddy small market, Baltimore and the cruddy Orioles and taking their best player. The Dodgers in the world. There's Yankees in the ALCS. Both great, both amazing, both have tons of talent. Dodgers don't even need a shortstop.
Starting point is 02:06:06 That will just rent it. Here's five. Woo-hoo. Cap, great for baseball. Dodgers, Yankees, player mobility. Big markets, glamorous markets, steel, small markets. And we're okay with it. But in the NBA, Kevin Durant's,
Starting point is 02:06:22 like, okay, I've been here seven years. You move the franchise on me. You butcher the James Hardin deal, so we got nothing back for a superstar. I've told you Westbrook's hard to play with. You embraced him, not me. I'm going to Golden State, who can only afford me, by the way, because of how smart they weren't drafting Draymond Green in the second round, Clay Thompson 11th, and Steph Curry 7th.
Starting point is 02:06:44 And because you've been really, really smart, I can fit under your salary cap. And you crush him. Either it says we love basketball more than baseball and just care more about it, or we got something against mobility. In America, Joy and I have moved around for our jobs. We celebrate in America mobility. If Joy's brother got a great job, you throw ice cream cake.
Starting point is 02:07:08 It's amazing. If somebody at Fox got a great job, we throw a pizza party for them. Awesome. I've moved around. Yeah, baseball players, rich to the poor. We'll take your best players. Whoa! Kevin Durant only fits in Golden State.
Starting point is 02:07:22 only in the salary cap because they've been so shrewd and smart with their development. Boo, ruin the league. What is it? Dodgers, Yankees are taking Baltimore players. You all love it. Media loves it. Fans love it. Baseball loves it.
Starting point is 02:07:37 I mean, we are hypocrites on mobility. You're either pro-mobility or you're anti-mobility, and I am pro-mobility. So go Warriors, go Dodgers, go Yankees. It's the hurt. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the Internet lost its mind. And nobody's telling you, exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode,
