Good morning.
Thursday night football tomorrow.
It was one of these days I'm driving into work and I'm thinking,
what am I going to lead with today? What's my story today? And oh my, I fell right into my lap.
There's a new book out by a friend, somebody that I used to be a colleague with,
who I have great admiration for, Ian O'Connor, terrific sports writer, great dude, great family,
New York writes a book called Belichick, The Making of the Greatest Football Coach of all time.
We're going to have them on the show Friday. The book is out, and there are some unbelievable,
quote. 350 people were interviewed for this. I know Ian. This guy's a worker. This guy's a grinder. There's not a quote in there that's not accurate. Okay. Here of the many quotes, let me just throw this one at you. An excerpt from the book Belichick, the making of the greatest football coach of all time. The general feeling, said somebody, wasn't that Belichick's system could make Super Bowl quarterbacks out of all 32 starters.
But if he gave any of the top 15 quarterbacks, we could do it.
We could do it.
Mr. Kraft thinks Tom's the greatest gift ever.
The coaches don't.
Time out.
So you believe we'd have the same dynasty here with Andy Dalton?
Alex Smith, Kirk Cousins, Joe Flacco?
Aren't those guys all around the 15th best quarterback in the league?
The beige water pistol would be the greatest quarterback of all time.
That's what you believe.
Oh, okay.
All right.
This is unbelievable.
Let me just remind you that, and I'm only going to talk about great quarterbacks here, all-time talents.
Tom Brady has a significantly better arm than Drew Breeze, Matt Ryan, and Russell Wilson.
He does.
He's a bigger athlete, 64-225 than Jared Goff, Matt Ryan, Breeze, Rogers, and Russell Wilson.
He is.
He's less injury-prone than Aaron.
Rogers, he is significantly more precise and accurate than Big Ben and Cam Newton.
And unlike Andrew Luck, he doesn't just, and you know I love Andrew Luck,
throw it up for grabs six times a game.
Oh yes, I forgot.
Now that Peyton Manning is retired, he is the best pre-snap quarterback in the National
Football League.
And I'm not sure outside of maybe Drew Brees, it's even close.
Folks, think about this.
6-4-225.
He was drafted by the Montreal Expos.
And in 1995-96, given a scholarship to play quarterback at Michigan at the time of top four, top five program.
Have you ever played in a league in high school where a quarterback was given a scholarship to Alabama and the Orioles drafted him?
You get how talented it is, right?
Did Aaron Rogers get a baseball scholarship?
Did Peyton Manning get a baseball scholarship?
Did Big Ben get a baseball scholarship?
Do you know how talented you have to be?
And people said baseball was his better sport.
To get a top five quarterback scholarship in football.
Right now, that would be Alabama offers you a football scholarship at quarterback.
You know how talented you have to be just to get that?
Oh, by the way, then a baseball team drafts you.
And not like in the 38th round, the 39, because baseball drafts go like 50 rounds.
It's like 18th round.
You can make the bigs out of the 18th round.
I mean, this is remarkable to me.
I was talking, another thing is Brady's defying age like nobody ever.
Like that doesn't count for anything.
I was talking to an NFL scout this weekend about Jimmy Garoppolo,
former Brady understudy in San Francisco.
And he said, that whole adult film star Garoppolo thing, Tom's too smart to do that.
that Garapolo's talented, but he'll never, ever be Brady pre-snap.
He'll never understand the temperature of the room like Brady.
This scout said, Garapolo and Shanahan will work, but they'll struggle.
He said because Garapolo's not the kind of guy you can feed information and translate it to the field.
This scout told me, he goes, when you tell Tom something, at practice Thursday, you will see it Sunday.
flawlessly.
That is a gift, folks.
I don't want to hear about systems.
How was Belichek's system in Cleveland?
Greg Popovich has a system.
You notice they don't win playoff series anymore
because Tim Duncan's not in the system?
Mark Cuban's one of the smart guys in America
told me years ago, owner of the Dallas Mavericks.
Billionaire, right?
I brought him on my show and he said,
the most overrated thing in business is ideas.
He goes, everybody's got a million ideas.
He goes, I got a dozen ideas emailed me every day.
Everybody's got ideas.
What's hard to find isn't great ideas.
What's hard to find is great people because nothing blows up a great idea like average people.
The San Antonio Spurs system doesn't win playoff series much anymore, do they?
The further Tim Duncan gets away out of his prime, then he retires the worst they get.
Nobody even considers them close to a title team this year.
In fact, most people think Toronto, who lost Kauai.
Leonard, it's not Kauai, it's the system,
will be better than San Antonio.
What about the system?
Three things to remember about
system quarterback Tom Brady. And
these are indisputable. Number one,
wide receivers
under Brady have
had Super Bowl MVP trophies.
Player of the Month trophies have been all pro
and have left Brady, not one or two,
like eight or nine, and have gone
Bermuda Triangle. They've disappeared.
Number two is,
Belichick not only lost in Cleveland was 5 and 11 in New England, and that's what Drew Bledso.
Dude could spin it.
And number three, the coordinators, Charlie Weiss, Bill O'Brien, Josh McDaniels have either been fired or haven't proven themselves or kind of choke like a cat in a hairball when they've left Brady.
The idea that 15 other quarterbacks in the NFL, Andy Dalton, Alex Smith, Kirk Cousins,
Dak, Flacco would be the greatest of all time is so much disrespect.
Here's the quote of it.
It is disrespectful.
It is the most disrespectful I've ever seen.
That's like saying Andrew Bynum could have created the Spurs dynasty.
That's what that's saying.
That is outrageous.
That is, that's like saying, I mean, I don't even, it's incredible.
It's really, it's really ungrateful.
Wow.
I mean, you got to be.
kidding me. The beige water pistol
be the goat.
I'm not saying that those other guys aren't
great athletes or good
quarterbacks or hard
workers, but the thing that separates
Tom from everyone else, besides
what he does on the field, is everything he does
behind the scenes to prepare. When you watch
Tom versus time, him being obsessed
with football, he is obsessed with it.
Okay. I can't even
okay, Ian O'Connor's on
Friday. I mean, I can't even get my arms
around this. My
brain around this, my tiny brain.
All right, let me segue to the Steelers who by the hour are becoming Ringling Brothers,
Bartman Bailey.
I mean, it's a circus.
So, Lavian Bell, he's their star running back.
He's not playing.
Apparently the staff has a picture.
TMZ got this.
He's now trolling the Pittsburgh Steelers on a jet ski.
Here it is.
Out here with the best running back of all time, baby.
You already know what it is, man.
We out here cooling it on the jet skis, man.
We out here getting it, baby.
Give him my man his money.
Oh, good Lord.
Antonio Brown, other Steeler offensive star,
according to an NFC coach,
was quoted saying it's a circus over there.
Mike has no control.
He's one of the best coaches,
but the players have way too much control over there.
It's an absolute circus.
And I just want to talk about Mike Tomlin.
And I've said before, he's Pete Carroll.
He can coach.
I'm not doubting that.
But he's too loose, no disqual.
discipline. We would all admit, here's something that's real in life, momentum.
I mean, Barry Switzer, you don't think of him as a great NFL coach, but he took Jimmy Johnson's
draft picks and contracts and culture and momentum and won a Super Bowl. Now, four years later,
they were six and ten. He was fired. Mark Helfrich took over Chip Kelly's football team.
use that momentum in year one or two to get to a national title game.
Three years later, he's out of work.
Larry Coker in Miami took over the Miami Hurricanes.
A couple years really good.
Year three, not as good.
Year five out of work.
Momentum is a real thing.
I could take over a really successful company.
I wouldn't ruin it in six days.
There'd start to be leaks in six weeks, and in six months I'd blow the thing up.
Because I don't know what I'm doing, right?
If I was running a business, I'm not a businessman.
I'm not a CEO.
I didn't go to Harvard Business School.
Momentum's a real thing.
So I want you to think about this.
So when Mike Tomlin is, let's break his career into halves, okay, 10 years of coaching.
So let's go to his first five years when he took Mike Tomlin's momentum.
Tomlin had nine players on the roster that were either pro bowlers or he had drafted and they were going to be pro bowlers.
Many of them have on defense.
Cowher was a defensive guys.
In the first five years, using Tomlin's draft pay.
culture, momentum.
He won almost 70% of his games.
Five playoff wins, four playoff appearances, two Super Bowls.
But since that time, the second half of his career, this is now Mike Tomlin's team.
Those cower players have retired, free agents, got hurt, left.
Now it's his roster, totally his footprint.
The second half, the longer it's his team.
The numbers aren't the same.
And here's what's more troubling.
is that if you look at the first five years when he took over Cowher's culture,
defensive players, many of his coaches, the Steelers defensive ranks.
And remember, Cower and Tomlin are defensive guys.
In the first five years, the defense was ranked first, fifth, second, first, first, sixth.
Wow.
But now the defense, and Tomlin's a defensive guy, it's his, his draft picks, his coaching,
his staff, his assistance, his mind.
is his everything.
The defensive ranks have gone to 14th, 18, 21st, 12th, now 25th this year.
That's the problem.
The offense isn't the issue.
Cower was never an offensive genius.
He was a defensive guy.
And when Cower was there, first, fifth, second, first, first, six, he took care of his side
of the ball.
Okay, Belichick even gives his offense to assistant coaches, Charlie Wise, Josh McDaniels, Bill
O'Brien.
man. But if you look as the momentum of Cower has dissipated, and it is now Tomlin's team,
the offensive stars are rolling their eyes, calling out Tomlin, because his side of the ball isn't
working. It's not that I think Tomlin's a bad coach. I've said it about Pete Carroll,
but momentum has always been a real thing. And I don't think people have ever kind of put their
arms around this and said, let's cut Tomlin's career into two halves. The first half, he took
some momentum from Cower, a roster, a culture, defensive players, draft picks. After about five years,
those guys leave, retire, get hurt, move on, get too old. Then it's yours, your footprint,
your draft picks, your coaches, completely your culture. And the defensive side of the
ball, frankly, it's not good enough. It's just not good enough. And then,
That's on Tomlin.
So nobody is insinuating he's Barry Switzer, least of all me.
But momentum's real.
And I think the longer Mike is running this organization,
the leaks are real, should be discussed, need to be fixed.
Because they are a circus and they are not close defensively
in the last five or six years to what he inherited.
momentum's real he doesn't have it anymore and i think sometimes mike is being exposed all
sorts of stuff today by the way whitlock yesterday now jason whitlock's always loved tomlin and we
we used to do speak for yourself i used to say yeah i'm not saying he can't coach but let's be
honest here this thing is it's his franchise now whitlock talked about this yesterday with marcellus
wiley on speak for yourself marcellus there's one house that keeps having drama there's you know the
are always, hey, could you turn the noise down?
Hey, you know, there were kids
partying here last weekend
and windows got knocked
out and there's one house where it keeps
being drama, drama, drama,
and there's one parent at the house.
And at some point, you've got to
look at Mike Tom and say,
damn, man, your house is animal house.
Tomlin
is respected in the sport
and I'm not calling for
his job, but I have been critical of Tomlin
Pete Carroll for the exact same thing. This is a coach of sport and a quarterback sport.
Loose ships, loose cultures unravel. Fast. And players now are more political. They're more
empowered. They're higher paid. They have social media to amplify their discussions.
And right now, Pittsburgh has to reel it in. They are a circus. They're a circus.
All right. Good stuff today. Coming up next.
I'm going to end the silliest sports myth ever.
For years and years, I've heard something.
And it's just ridiculous.
So this morning, I literally went down into my database.
I crawled down the ladder of my database into the well.
And we're going to end it on this show.
And it involves Tom Brady.
And we're going to end it forever.
That's coming up next.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9-8.
on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.
So Ian O'Connor's got a new book out, Belichick, the greatest football coach of all time.
And in it, there is a quote from somebody within the building of New England that Joy Taylor
and I are, to say the least, dismayed by that the general feeling among staff members wasn't
that Belichick's system could make Super Bowl quarterbacks out of all 32 NFL starters.
but if you gave us any of the top 15, we could do it.
Okay, so Andy Dalton would be the goat.
Alex Smith would be the goat.
Joe Flacco would be the goat.
Good hell.
I mean, it's...
It's embarrassed.
You know what?
It is embarrassing.
It's embarrassing.
It's embarrassing.
Whoever said that is, it should be embarrassed.
And it goes a long way in...
Like, a lot of times I'll be out among the peeps, right?
I'll be at the grocery store, car wash, restaurant.
wrong, somebody will come up to me and they'll have an opinion on sports.
And they kind of ask in a question, what do you think of this?
What do you think of that?
But occasionally, they'll state something as fact to me.
And I'll be like, I do this for a living.
You have another job.
I wish I had time to explain it.
But really jam my car keys in my retina.
I can't get out of this conversation fast enough with guy who believes he has the answer
in a definitive sports argument.
and instead of my, if I'm at the restaurant,
I grab the fork and I just jam it in my eye.
And I bleed and I leave the restaurant in an ambulance
because that's more comforting than talking to that buffoon.
And this happens about once a month.
I have had people, because I know I love Brady,
lots of people come out to me in the last 20 years, 15 years,
and say, hey, Patriots won 11 games,
won 11 and 5 with Matt Castle.
Now I bring you the dumbest sports myth of all time.
Colin ends the dumbest myth in all of sports.
Okay.
Let me contextualize this and talk slowly.
Tom Brady, Welker, Moss, great team.
The year before he gets hurt, they go 16 and 0.
In a league, this is not college football,
where you don't blow people out much.
They have...
11 to 12 blowout wins.
16 and 0, 11 to 12 blowout wins.
They set passing records, receiving records.
They are called for a single season the greatest offense of all time.
Then Tommy gets hurt.
Matt Castle comes in.
Not only does he win five fewer games.
Not only are they blown out three times by over 20 points.
Not only do they fail to make the playoffs.
Folks, seven times they've been.
don't score 20 points.
So in virtually half the games, the greatest offense of all time can't get to the league
average of 22 points.
Oh, by the way, Randy Moss had 23 touchdowns with Tom the following year, only 11 and 39% fewer
yards with the same roster, only changed Brady.
Let me also add this.
We know that when
Aaron Rogers got hurt and Brett Hundley came in,
it was a different offense, right?
We know when Carson Wentz gets hurt and Nick Foles comes in,
they're not as good.
So let me give you some examples.
So the Green Bay offense with Aaron Rogers last year and without him,
the difference in total points was eight.
That's a lot of points.
That's over a touchdown.
When Wentz got hurt to Nick Foles, the difference was three points.
Tom Brady got hurt to Matt Castle.
It was 11 points.
And thus ends the dumbest sports myth of all time.
Thus ends the dumbest myth in all of social.
I mean, seriously.
You know how many times I've heard that argument, right?
Because that was the Dolphins won the AFC East that year.
Yeah, that year, with the greatest offense of all time, Tom leaves,
the dysfunctional dolphins won the division.
I mean, think about this.
It is significantly greater difference between Castle and Brady than Hundley and Rogers.
And you watched the Packers last year, not the same team.
Joy Taylor with the news
No
No no
Turn on the news
This is the herd line news
I just
I feel your frustration
Because I've heard that argument
So many times
And it's like I don't
I've suffered at the hands of
Tom Brady as a sports fan for 20 years
I mean
Yeah you've been
Like no one should be more bitter at Tom Brady than me
And I've just submitted to he's the greatest
What am I supposed to do
That's right
Sometimes you pull a short shot
This is what it is
When you were a Knicks fan against Michael
Jordan. It's like, yeah, he played pretty well.
But it is what it is. It is what it is.
Exactly. What are you going to do?
All right. So after just two games, the Rams look like the best team in the NFL.
And after beginning the offseason with the eight best odds to win the Super Bowl,
the Rams have now passed the Patriots as the favorites to win it all.
So they opened it 20 to 1 and the updated odds are 5 to 1.
What do you think about that?
I think it's right. I think I will say this.
Rams are the only team in the league that can drop 35.
and when the game's over, you're like,
yeah, you don't really play that great.
Like I always said this about Kevin Durant.
Kevin Durant can score 29 points,
and you're like, I didn't think he was great.
If Clay Thompson, who's also a really good player, scored 29,
you'd feel all of it.
You'd be like, oh, Clay, you'd drive home that night from Oracle.
You're like, God, Clay Thompson was money.
Durant scores 29, and you're like, really?
Because you have higher expectations.
And great players and great teams make it look really easy.
That's very consistent.
That's very consistent.
easily. As good as Clay is, 29, you feel 29. The Rams dropped 35 points in this league regularly,
and it's like they didn't really smoke it. I still also maintain that they just,
they're just not a loud team. Like everything that you see going on with the Patriots,
this whole offseason, with the Steelers, you know, you look at a team like the Cowboys,
that always have storyline surrounding them, the Packers. Like, they just, what do you know about
the Rams? Even in Los Angeles, even in Los Angeles,
It is still a Laker town.
You never hear anything about the Rams.
No.
Except for that they're good.
Jared Goff, I've never seen him on local TV.
They're an incredibly great machine, but they've been very smart.
Todd Gurley, you can see him sometimes locally.
But, I mean, they're stars.
They're at practice or they're apparently hiding.
They really must be because this is L.A.
All right.
So the Browns passed on Sam Donald on the draft, as we know.
But they did do their due diligence on him throughout the draft process.
and Hugh Jackson plans to use every piece of intel that they gathered in week three.
We're going to use every piece of information we can.
You can believe it.
Yeah, I mean, we have an idea of who we're playing.
There's no doubt.
I mean, he's a tough competitive young man.
You know, he's not going to shy away from anything.
And he's going to stand there and try to make plays when it need be.
And he doesn't get rattled much.
So we'll use all the information we have to our advantage.
So all the information that you've got to be.
that led you to not drafting him number one overall.
Well, Cleveland should win.
They're at home.
It's a rookie quarterback.
They have a really good defense finally.
And it's a short week.
Remarkably, the line is three.
This is a game Cleveland should win.
I think they will and they'll go one, one, and one.
And they're exactly where they should be with Tyrod Taylor.
Terrod Taylor is doing exactly what Terrod Taylor's done his whole life.
He has stabilized a mess.
their 0-1-1 would be 2-0 with a kicker.
So I don't want to hear that Terod Taylor's not good enough.
They are a kicker away from being 2-0 against the Steelers and Saints.
This whole thing about you've got to get Baker-Mayfield on it.
What's Terran Taylor?
He's thrown for about 230 yards.
With that team, that's what Terrod Taylor does.
So you don't think if they lose this game...
Oh, I think their owner's a typical zealot billionaire.
And if they lose to the Jets, I think that Hugh Jackson's going to be forced to play Baker.
And I don't think Baker's quite ready.
And by the way, the Brown schedule gets.
brutal. Like week four to week
11, it's a nightmare.
I think it's Baker
week four if
if they lose this week.
Speaking of the Brown's passing on Darnold, unlike
Josh Rosen, who's made it very clear that
he is upset about
not going number one overall. There were nine mistakes
that happened passing on him in the draft.
Donald says the snub isn't a big
motivating factor as he gets ready for Thursday nights
game in Cleveland.
I mean, I thought, you know, I could have ended up there
or, you know, several other teams. So
You know, but during that whole draft process, you know, I honestly haven't even thought about it, you know, since I got drafted by the Jets.
But with him having the one pick, it was, you know, I guess a good chance that I might have gone there.
So I was thinking about it before.
But, you know, ever since the draft, I haven't really thought about it.
By the way, he went third.
So it's not like Aaron Rogers, who didn't go number one and had to sit there for three hours.
Darnold sat there for about eight minutes and then was like, oh, oh, I'd rather go to the Jets anyway than Cleveland.
There's not a lot of bitterness there.
I think he ended up in a good situation.
And I think that we're already kind of forgetting what happened with this draft class.
Remember, nobody knew who was going to go number one overall.
The day of the draft, nobody knew.
You rarely have that.
We almost always know, months before, like this guy is going to this team.
Like, the team's not going to say it.
They're going to say they're going to do their due jails and everything.
But we know this guy is going number one, number all, or at least one or two, depending on the quarterback.
This quarterback draft class was all over the place.
Nobody knew where they were going.
Joey Fitted with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
New book out by Ian O'Connor chronicling Bill Belichick to Patriots and Tom Brady,
joining me from New York via the Coward Global Satellite Network.
My friend Nick Wright co-host, first things first.
Yeah, I mean, listen, it's 350 people interviewed.
There's some strife in the relationship.
What's your takeaway?
I mean, my takeaway is they use the divorce line. And what is it? About 50% of all marriages in this
country end in divorce. This is an arranged marriage between Brady and Belichick, as any coach
quarterback combo is when the quarterback selected through the draft. The fact that it's lasted
at such a high level for this long is essentially unprecedented in an NFL history. So,
of course, there is some strife. These are two people.
both of whom probably believe they are the greatest to ever do what they have done in their respective fields
and who are very different human beings.
I'm not surprised that Brady would contemplate what life, football life would be like without Bill Belichick.
But we're lying to ourselves if we don't admit both of these guys have benefited enormously from the other's existence.
Like, while I think you make a great point about what the Pats were,
with Castle. Everyone points out the 11 wins. Another way to say it is they were minus five wins
from the year before. But obviously, like Brady still, I think, turns himself into an all-timer
without Belichick. And Belichick probably still wins a Super Bowl or two without Brady. But I don't
think either is considered the greatest of all-time as they are without each other. I think that's
very fair. Listen, I tend to, when I look at a
player. Like when I look at Andrew Luck, when he was coming into the draft, I said he looks like
kind of this guy and kind of this guy. When Sam Darnold came in, I said he's a little Andrew luck,
he's a little Brett Favre. I don't think he's his talent at his Favre closer to luck, but he is
reckless and good. So I compare a lot. I've always said Pete Carroll and Mike Tomlin, same guy.
Clearly they can coach. They've got a Super Bowl. They've got, when they get the right quarterback,
they win. But I will tell you, I'm watching Lavian Belnajet ski. I got Big Ben taking shots.
couple of years. I got Antonio Brown. At some point, and I've been very critical of Pete Carroll,
I will be later today because he continues to bang on Russell Wilson, but at some point,
is this on Mike Tomlin? I mean, come on. It's like the longer he runs the show there,
the crazier it gets. Does it not? All right. Well, first of all, when you look at Sam
Darnold, you're the heart-eyes emoji. That's what you see when you look at Sam Darnold.
But to answer your question directly, I think Mike Tomlin, there's one coach in the league more accomplished than Tomlin. It's Belichick. That's it.
No coach in NFL history has more double-digit win seasons through 11 years than Tomlin. Only two coaches have more wins through 11 seasons than Tomlin. They've never been below 500.
They were the best team in the NFL up until the moment Ryan Shazir was tragically carted off the field.
That's what's changed in Pittsburgh, by the way.
They were given up 17 a game up until Shazir's injury, 28 a game since then.
I don't know how we're going to put the El Bell situation on Tomlin.
The team decided not to extend Levyon Bell.
He's not under contract, so he's living his best life in Miami.
I would argue the Big Ben stuff is a feather in Tomlin's cap
because all the other great coaches have their quarterbacks working with them.
Tomlin's got to deal with his quarterback.
We all agree to stay in the locker room.
I'm going to go out on the field during the anthem.
I wanted to spike the ball.
Don't know why we didn't spike the ball.
You want Todd Haley here.
I want to strangle Todd Haley with my bare hands.
He's got his quarterback working against him regularly.
Now, A, B, you can argue, hey, the Jackson.
Jacksonville Jaguars had a star player get a little sideways on Twitter, as Joy would say,
get a little spicy on the bird, and they suspended him for a week.
Antonio Brown does it multiple times.
They let it go.
That is how Tomlin does business.
I think he is arguably the second best coach in the NFL.
I don't know how anyone could make the argument.
He's not a top five coach.
So do I think you're being a little harsh on him?
I do.
Okay.
Here's another guy.
Pete Carroll.
What coach says this about their Hall of Fame quarterback?
He said Russell Wilson, quote, is over trying a little bit.
Yeah, because when I watched the Bears game on Monday night, my takeaway was,
you know, Russell's trying too hard, not running for his life.
He's just darn it, he's just trying too hard.
I think Pete Carroll, again, he's empowered players.
The locker room is loose.
Everybody's talking.
I mean, am I too hard on Pete Carroll?
Well, I mean, you have literally picked the only coaches in the league,
other than Belichick to have been to multiple super roles and do have won one, one,
the second and third most accomplished coaches in the league, and you're chopping their heads off.
It's like, listen, maybe you're right.
Maybe their time has passed.
What's happening to the Seahawks to me is twofold.
One is they made a very odd decision,
which is to rebuild during the prime of a Hall of Fame quarterback's career.
I've never seen it done intentionally.
I'm not sure why they made this decision.
I don't see a precedent for a decision like this.
But the other thing going on with Seattle is this.
They haven't played at home yet.
They're without Baldwin, Wagner, K.J. Wright, and Earl Thomas didn't go to training camp.
After Russell, those are your four best players.
Three are out. One is, I would argue, not yet in his best shape.
But Carol, I will listen to the argument more of because it did seem the locker room and the defense got sick of him and turned on him a bit.
is a far, far older coach. The Seahawks, the reality is they did make the playoffs every year
until last year. So I will give them maybe a bigger grace period than you're comfortable giving them,
but that offensive line is in shambles. And I have a very controversial football opinion,
which is being part of the Schottenheimer DNA tree doesn't make you a great coach. I know that's a
wild thing to say, but they made Brian Schottenheimer their head coach after his, a lot of
lustrous stent, or their offensive coordinator, pardon me,
after his illustrious stent as the offensive coordinator for those great Jets'
offenses and Rams' offenses of a few years ago.
Okay, good luck with that.
By the way, you'd be proud of me.
You have been very upfront and honest that occasionally you would gamble on a football game.
I tend to be a little more reticent there.
This week, Joy Taylor is my witness.
I bet $1,000 the most I've ever bet times 10,
on a regular season NFL game
I feel that strongly about.
I've never done that in my life.
That's how strongly I feel about a game
and I thought of you because I'm like,
God, Nick Wright does that over breakfast,
over English muffin.
Hold on.
I've got some quick follow-ups.
This was last week or this week?
This week.
There's a game this week.
My biggest.
Oh, you haven't told America yet?
No.
But I'm going to put it in an envelope later today.
So when it happens, Monday, I'll say,
okay, I'm a schmuck, or hey, I'm buying a new Bentley.
One of those two things is going to happen on Monday.
I'm very excited.
So you'd be proud of me.
All right, well, it'll look great next to your other two Bentley's,
and now I'm going to quote Colin Cowherd once upon a time.
Once upon time, Colin Coward was on his way to a boxing match.
I'm not going to say which boxing match it was,
and I never would say it maybe was on a private jet or something like that
because there's a lifestyle Colin Cowherd lives.
And I implored you.
I begged you.
I use every ounce of my whatever sway I had on you.
I said, Colin, take a duffel bag with $50,000 there, bet the favorite, and you will come home with a duffel bag of $70,000.
And I'm betraying a confidence, but I don't care since you're now in my world of gambling.
You said, Nick, I've done very well with my money.
Do you know how I've stayed doing well with my money?
I don't gamble with my money.
What you're going to learn shortly is it's fun to be wealthy.
It's so much more fun to maybe not be as wealthy or maybe be more wealth.
Oh, welcome in, sir.
It's glorious.
It's so glorious.
It's great.
I'm happy for you.
This is exciting.
Nick Wright, I've entered your world.
Good seeing you, bud.
Coming up next.
Absolutely, you too.
He always makes me laugh.
You know, he talked about the darnold heart emoji.
I'm getting feedback, pushback on Darnold.
I'm going to lay out the schedule so you can't tweet me anymore.
I'm going to put on my bulletproof Darnold vest.
Next. You won't be able to mock me anymore, and I'll explain it next.
The Herd. Borrow up to 40 grand to pay off credit cards. Lendingclub.com slash ports.
Lending club.com slash sports. Okay. I put my name on it. I'm here every day.
You want to take shots at me. I'm here every day.
Show's called The Herd Joy Taylor watching me every day. Put my name on it.
So a lot of you, I know it's going to happen throughout the course of the year.
Sam Darnel Jets play Cleveland tomorrow. Every time Darnel loses, throws a pick, you'll rush to Twitter.
Hey, we got you. You're terrible.
Okay. I put my name on it. Sam Darnold, I predicted, would go seven and nine with 18 picks, and I love him. I said it's going to be a choppy year one. So he's one in one through two weeks. I picked him on this show, Blazing Five to beat Detroit Monday Night Football. That's not me just talking at a bar. Yep, yep, yep, yep. I put my name on it. I put it on my Blazing Five. I predicted they win. I didn't put it in my Blazing Five. Thought they'd lose. So I predicted seven and nine. Here are the
the remaining games. I did this before the season. I predict they lose at Cleveland and at Jacksonville.
Those defenses are way too good for a rookie quarterback, and they have a bad O'Line and no running game.
He'll be one in four. I then predict they beat Denver at home. Then they go on another three-game
losing streak. They'll lose to Andrew Luck at home, Kirk Cousins and the Vikings at home, and they'll
go to Chicago, and again, that defense is way too good for a rookie quarterback to dissect. You notice a trend
here when they play good defenses. Cleveland, Jacksonville, Minnesota, Chicago. I have them losing.
Rookie quarterbacks do. Then I have them going on a little streak, win at Miami, beat Buffalo at home,
and their biggest win of the year, they should have beaten New England last year with Josh McCown. Off of
by, they'll beat New England at home. Then I have them losing at Tennessee, beating the bills in
Houston, Houston at home, and then losing the Green Bay in New England. This is exactly what I'm
So I love Sam Darnold.
I'm predicting two three-game losing streaks.
I'm predicting he loses at the end of the year, which will give you all sorts of
ammo.
They'll be in playoff contention Saturday, December 15th.
They'll beat Houston.
And they'll be in that sort of, hey, hey, they have a chance to, and they're going to
lose to Green Bay in New England.
And you're going to come flying in.
This is what I've predicted.
So I do think they're going to go through a real rough.
three-week stretch. Rookie quarterbacks are streaky. Even talented rookie quarterbacks are
sort of like backups. High-low, high-low, Nick Foles, Ryan Fitzpatrick, great, terrible, great,
terrible. Carson Wentz, Rogers, Breeze, Matt Ryan, Brady, you get kind of the same quarterback
every week. So a rookie quarterback, even a good one, tends to be streaky. And the thing about
rookie quarterbacks, Belichick's a master at this, especially when they get them in Foxborough,
rookie quarterbacks just don't have the ability pre-snap to beat good defenses if that team
doesn't turn the ball over too many times.
I have them losing at Cleveland.
This is a real good defense.
Losing at Jacksonville.
I have them losing to Minnesota's defense.
I have them losing to Chicago's defense.
The teams I think they can beat are often home games with defenses that are dissectable
and offenses that are okay.
I haven't beaten Buffalo twice.
I think they can beat Miami.
I have him doing one big win this year.
Off a buy.
By the way, it's off a buy.
So Donald get two weeks to prepare.
And through the years, guys less talented than Sam Donald,
Mark Sanchez, for instance, have beaten Tom Brady.
So New England and the Jets have always been a very combative,
very competitive relationship.
You've had real games here.
So when he loses tomorrow night, and he will,
Cleveland's defense on a short week,
that's a rough, rough game for Donald.
And by the way, he also has three interceptions through two games, and I predicted that,
18 interceptions.
He will throw a pick tomorrow night at Cleveland.
He will throw one against the Jags, and I think he probably throws a couple against
the Vikings.
And then I think there are some games, home against Buffalo, you know, home against maybe
an Indianapolis or a Denver, that he maybe doesn't throw a pick.
But I have him throwing over a pick a game.
So before you go crazy on all this Sam Darnold stuff, I'm realistic about it.
There's the schedule.
You call me out on it.
But I'll put my name on it.
I'll put respect on it.
I'll put my name on it.
That's right.
That's what I'm all about right now.
I still cannot get over.
The Ian O'Connor book on Belichick.
I have it in my office here.
I got to read it.
Somebody on the coaching staff said,
we're not saying we could take all 32 quarterbacks and win a Super Bowl,
but we think if you gave us the top 15, we could do it.
So you could duplicate what you've done over 18 years.
What you're saying is with Kirk Cousins, Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton,
I mean, Dak Prescott's closer to 15 than 10.
You could do all this stuff with those guys?
Oh, my Lord.
It's really bizarre.
It's a bizarre statement.
It is.
There's so many words you can use to describe.
Now, now, could you do it with, you know, again, Rogers, a healthy luck, maybe a healthy
wents, you know, there are guys where you could, but even with those quarterbacks, I don't
think you duplicate it.
I don't think you'd do this.
Joel Klapp, Plaxico, Burris, DeAngelo Hall, and a story on the Lakers and LeBron,
which is rather interesting.
One down, two to go, just starting out absolutely packed today.
In Los Angeles, it's the herd.
Ah, hour number two.
This is the herd.
Wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles,
Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1, Plaxico, Burris, Joel Clatt, DeAngelo Hall in five minutes,
has faced many of these young quarterbacks tomorrow. Sam Darnold goes to Cleveland,
great defense, take on the Browns.
Joy Taylor is joining me in hour number two, a very lively first hour in which, as I drove to work this morning,
You know, a lot of times like a Monday or a Tuesday, I drive to work knowing during the football season,
and we have a lot of topics.
It's when you get into like Wednesdays, midweek for me, is there a good topic developing?
And one landed in our lap.
Ian O'Connor, a guy I know and respect a lot, wrote a new book about Bill Belichick.
And it's basically Belichick, the making of the greatest football coach of all time.
350 people interviewed.
There's a couple of interesting quotes.
The first one that I'm just utterly dismayed by is that somebody on the New England staff,
said, the general feeling is we couldn't win the Super Bowl with 32 quarterbacks, but if you gave
us the top 15, we could do it. Bob Kraft thinks Tom's the greatest gift ever. The coaches don't.
The other quote, or the other part of the book that's interesting to me, Brady could not walk away.
It talks about this earlier in the article. He could not walk away from the game. He could not ask
for a trade. The moment Belichick, it says here, traded Jimmy Garoppolo to San Francisco,
and they banked on Brady staying to play at 40, 41, 42, which he had,
often said he knew Brady knew he was trapped.
If he left, if he demanded a trade, the Boston fans who love him and adore him and worship
him would turn on him. The mob would turn on him. Tom forced out Garapolo. Now Tom's leaving.
We're a mess. So Brady felt trapped. Here's the thing about this. This happens a lot in a lot
of businesses and a lot of marriages. Bill and Tom at this point, they're stuck with each other.
They really are. So let's first address Bill Belichick. Okay. We're
is he going to go? Oh, he loves the New York Giants. Eli Manning's
a quarterback. Bill Belichick got fired in Cleveland when he had old
unsuccessful quarterbacks. Eli Manning's a shot fighter. Belichick, there's
nowhere to go right now that has a great quarterback that's dying for a coach. And even,
you know, I mean, people say, what about Denver? Case Keenham? You can go from Tom Brady to
Case Keenum? You go from Tom Brady to Jimmy Garoppolo to Case Keenum? You're not, you're not,
that's not going to happen.
So now let's address Tom Brady.
Where would Tom go?
Well, Tom Brady would obviously, the most important thing for Brady would be,
can I get an offensive guy who I can work with?
Because Tom at this point is 40 years old.
He's not messing around with new head coaches and new coordinators.
So he would work with Andy Reed, one of the great play designers.
Andy Reed's got Patrick Mulhombs, got his guy.
He would work with Sean McVeigh, who he respects.
Sean McVeigh's got Jared Gough.
He's got his guy.
He would work with Kyle Shanahan.
Oh, Shanahan's got Garoppolo.
He's got his guy.
He would work with Sean Payton.
Well, Drew Breeze has a couple of years left.
So the guys that Brady would want to work with, because remember, Brady has fought to keep Josh McDaniels.
The number one thing to Tom is, you've got to have my guy.
I'm not babysitting coaches here.
It's bad enough.
The players are all 23.
I'm not babysitting my coaches.
So the two places that I do think would be an interesting landing spot for Brady,
where they have really smart offensive guys
and they have a quarterback that's replaceable.
Miami with Ryan Tannahill.
Adam Gase is a smart cookie.
Brady could go down there, cut the cord with Ryan Tannahill.
Just look at that uniform right now for our television audience.
That doesn't look right.
Oh, I disagree.
That looks terrible.
It's like a high school jersey.
Everybody looks good.
Tom Brady with a big fish, mammal on the side, not working.
The second place is Matt Nagy, the coordinator, the Andy Reid guy in Chicago, that they would say, Tom would look at that and go, oh, hell, that defense, I'd go against Darren Rogers with that defensive front, that roster, and Chicago would cut ties or demote Mitch Tribesky.
Take a look at that.
It's got a little look to it.
I'm not going to lie.
That would not shock me.
He looks pretty damn good in a bear's uniform.
But I guess my point is they need each other.
There's not a lot of places out there.
Belich, once you get successful, once you get rich,
it's not just that I'm old and tired.
It's, I'm not going to put up with crap anymore.
Belichick's not going to start over with some newbie quarterback.
And Brady is not going to start over having to teach somebody all his tricks.
Brady is going to go somewhere where he can get a read, a Sean,
Peyton, a Sean McVeigh, a Kyle Shanahan, a strong, definitive, successful coach,
and they can, over the course of six months, figure each other out, hit the ground running,
and go.
He's not going to waste time.
I don't think there's a place for Belichick to go that's perfect, and I certainly don't
think there's a place for Tom Brady to go.
Though, he looked good in that bear's uniform.
If you were Chicago today, cut bait with Trubisky.
Tom comes in one year.
Would you do it?
Two years?
I'd do it.
Tom Brady, with that defense, two years?
I'd do it.
I'm not a Trubisky fan.
And with that, 14 NFL seasons,
a multiple-time pro bowler who had his share of Tom Brady
and great quarterbacks and rookie quarterbacks.
Sam Donald going tomorrow.
DeAngelo Hall is joining us here on a Wednesday in the herd.
How many times you face, Brady?
Oh, man.
More times than I like to.
All right, a lot of Tom.
You know, it's funny, one of the quotes in the book that, Joey and I are just like, it's an embarrassing quote.
And one of the quotes in the book, Eno Connor, 350 people interviewed is, we don't think we could win the Super Bowl with all 32 quarterbacks.
But if you gave us the top 15 guys, we could do it.
To which I say, so you think Andy Dalton could be the greatest of all time with Belichick?
So when you faced Brady, one of my arguments is he did get drafted in baseball and a scholarship to Michigan.
Aaron Rogers didn't get a drafted in baseball.
didn't get drafted in bay. Outside of Russell Wilson,
not many quarterbacks in the net. Philip Rivers
didn't get drafted to do another sport. Tom's a better
he's a bigger, stronger, better athlete
than we think. The second thing, though,
you spent a career
baiting quarterbacks.
My thing is
once Peyton Manning retired, I think Tom's
the best pre-snap quarterback in the league.
Take my audience to
what that means and what you've seen facing
Tom. Well,
when you talk about facing guys like Tom
Aaron Rogers.
Tom Aaron Rogers, Drew Breeze.
You faced all of them many times.
Yeah, these are quarterbacks that no matter what you do pre-snap,
it's not much they haven't seen.
And so they know how to pick up on the little nuances of whether it's myself as a corner,
whether I'm playing with a cock position or if I'm playing square,
if I'm sitting at four yards instead of eight yards,
like they can sit there and take some of those little nuances
that you as a player aren't really thinking about
and you're thinking, man, this quarterback's not looking at me,
but he is.
What I've learned from offenses and offensive coordinators
and quarterbacks, like, we're looking at you
because nine out of ten times,
that front is going to move around.
Linebackers are going to move around.
But that secondary, I'll always have to know
where the corners are and what the safeties are
because if I know where those guys are,
I can get, I can get,
I can guess pretty well what coverage you're in.
And I can move guys and say, hey, is it man, it's his own?
Hey, is it a 3D?
Is it a too high shell?
And so those are guys, especially Tom.
And I'm going to admit this, but Tom's probably one of two or three only quarterbacks
that have played for an extended period of time that I haven't got an interception from.
and one time I faced him, he had Randy Moss, who was amazing.
But even when he didn't have Randy Moss, he still found a way to pick us apart.
And it was crazy, no matter what we did on defense.
And I told a story back in the avocado room.
And I was like, you know, we had a coordinator who loved man to man.
Who is that?
It's okay.
If you don't want to call somebody out.
I'm not going to call them out.
I'm not going to call them out.
But we were playing New England,
and Tom had probably a seven, eight play drive.
And, you know, we're playing pretty good on defense.
But the coordinator caught man to man seven times in a row.
And we were successful six times.
But somehow they kept getting first downs,
whether that was running the ball,
whether that was a little five, six-yard pass here or there.
but no explosive plays and we felt like, man, you know, we're in good shape.
Me as an older player, I'm like, man, we need to start switching this up.
We need to start switching it up.
We can't keep giving this guy the same look.
And then eventually my other corner gets double moved, touchdown.
But he had broke up three passes prior to that.
So I'm on the sideline.
He's mad.
Everybody's mad.
And I just look at the coordinator like, bro, if you don't change these calls,
you can't call the same play call on defense.
and think Tom Brady's not going to eventually figure it out.
Like, we played the same coverage six times in the row,
and we had decent success.
Then on the 70.
But that seven time, he's going to get you.
And that's how a guy like Tom Brady is.
Eventually, if you keep showing him the same look
or if you run something that's very similar
that he can figure it out by either pre-snap read
or by motion of the guy,
that's why they move guys all around.
If I have a running back out there out wide,
I can pretty much tell what coverage you're in.
because if your corner is still out there,
oh, it's a former zone,
because the corner's not bumping in on my receiver.
If the lineback is out there or safety,
all right, there's a former man.
If it's a linebacker, maybe that safety's going to come blitz.
And so it's not much a guy like Tom Brady hasn't seen.
That's why he's so hard to prepare against
and so hard to really to make plays or win.
Yeah.
Now, the opposite of that,
Sam Darnold plays tomorrow.
I like Sam Darnold.
And with a caveat,
I think he's going to go seven and nine.
I think he's going to have 18 picks.
He's got little Andrew Luck.
I don't think he's quite as gifted as Andrew Luck,
but he's reckless.
He's a risk taker.
He throws picks.
But he's also going to be the best quarterback
after Brady retires in that division for a long time.
Now take me to young quarterbacks you faced.
You ever gotten burned by one?
If you had a lot of success against young quarterbacks.
You know, as a defensive guy, every week when you have a young quarterback,
the coordinator always comes in there.
Oh, we're going to get them.
We're going to confuse them.
we're going to do this, we're going to do that.
And, you know, I talked about how experience works in the favor of a guy like Tom Brady
and Peyton Manning and some of those guys.
In-experienced quarterbacks, it doesn't mean that they aren't able to still pick up on some
of these little things.
It just depends how they're coached.
A guy like Sam Darnel reminds me so much of a guy that I went up against as a rookie
and Matt Stafford.
And we were like, oh, man.
They both play a little reckless.
Yeah, they do.
They do.
and we all were chomping at the bit like, man, Matt's going to throw it to us and
da-da-da-da-da, and we're all getting excited to play them, and we get in the game,
and this dude's dicing us up better than Peyton did the week before.
And so we're all kind of shell-shock like, man, this young dude ain't got no fear.
Like, he doesn't care that I'm out here on the corner.
He's throwing it, whereas some guys kind of like, you know, Peyton was like, man,
I'm not throwing you the ball of D. Hall.
Believe that.
And so it's weird because it matters, but it really does.
it matters. Yeah, I mean, listen, the other thing is, too, is that when you face Brady,
DeAngelo, you are very aware of his skill set. You get up for it.
Whereas you play a rookie, you get a little cocky, turn your shoulders a little different.
You definitely do. I heard a defensive coordinator said, nobody created more sleepless nights
in the AFC than Peyton Manning, that you would literally as a staff sleep in the office for
three straight nights because Peyton would humiliate you. Tom would beat you. Peyton could
humiliate you.
Because I think Peyton's the greatest pre-snap guy in the history of the league.
So to your point, I do think sometimes talented D.Bs have a little, you get a little, you get
a little cocky on the rookie.
You bite on the first move.
You absolutely do, because you're thinking it's no way he's crafted enough to give me that move.
Like that's a move that Tom would give me or that's a move Peyton would give me.
And, you know, one year we played Peyton, we literally sat in a cover two shell because we
found out the week before, and really the week before that, too, the last two games, that teams
had more success not trying to disguise, but just make everything look the same.
So line up everything the exact same.
Whether you're in man, whether you're in cover two, whether you're in a fire zone blitz,
we're going to make everything look the same.
And we did, and we were winning at some point in the game, but before you know it, it was
42, 21 and we lost.
And so, you know, Peyton and Tom and some of those guys, Aaron and Drew.
By the way, they all win 70% of their games.
They're just, man.
They're just built different.
For the record, Steelers make a lot of noise.
What was the, I mean, you got Antonio Brown talking,
and you got Levian Bell talking.
I generally don't think over time that's great.
I'd like to keep mostly politics and chatter and predictions and guarantees.
I don't like Rex Ryan when he was guaranteed stuff.
I'm not a big fan of talking.
But did you ever play in a locker room that was just loud, cocky, noisy prediction guarantee?
It's probably as a player fun.
Yeah.
All your years,
League 14 years. What was the cockiest, loudest, talkative locker room you were in?
Probably in Atlanta. Probably my rookie year. And part of the talking came from me because me not really
knowing when I got to the NFL, you know, I got that oh my goodness moment when Randy Moss
embarrassed me in, you know, in the preseason and it kind of had me like, man, you know, this is
this is harder than I thought. But then I realized too, it ain't but one of them dudes. You know what
mean. And so everybody else was kind of like, shoot, I can handle him. I can handle him. I can handle him.
But yeah, Randy's a little different. And so you were cocky. So at first I was kind of cocky and then
Randy humbled me and then I started having success and I was kind of like, you know, this is easing in
college. Because in college, I went to Virginia Tech. When I was there, we never played in the BCS game.
We never won the Big East. We always had those historical matchups with West Virginia and Miami.
and we just never could quite put it all together.
And so as a rookie to be playing in the NFC championship game
and having Michael Vick one of the greatest quarterbacks at that time
or athletes on the planet,
I mean, they were making commercials about Mike,
the Michael Vick experience.
So your first year in the NFL was better than your three years at college.
Absolutely.
Winning was easier.
I won a lot of games.
Sure.
Like I was thinking like, wow, this NFL is easy than college.
But I didn't get back to an NFC championship game
ever again.
But having a guy like Michael Vick on your team, it exudes confidence.
Of course.
And so that locker room, we felt like, oh, I don't care what's going on.
At the end of the day, Mike's going to get it in the end zone, and we just got to be
all right on defense.
That was for the record, that team when they went up to Green Bay eventually and won.
That team was, I don't know how great Atlanta was.
That team was one of the fastest teams in the league.
Alan Rossum, you, Michael Vick, that team could run.
We used to joke, we could get a four by one squad to.
together and challenge some...
Olympian teams. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, that team was nothing but speed.
Good seeing you, bud.
Coming up next, Shaq takes a shot at LeBron, and he may be right.
Buy seller, hold, Joel Clatt, a lot going on, not even halfway home.
Car shopping's confusing, a lot of terms, dealer price, list, price, invoice.
Here's what's not saving three grand off MSRP, truecar.com, new or used.
Check it out.
This interesting story, Shaquille O'Neill, and the Lakers are the greatest NBA franchise,
ever. I mean, just to give you an idea, when you start putting down a list of best Lakers ever,
I mean, like, you can argue Wilt doesn't make the starting five. I mean, that's what it's like.
Literally, it's Kareem, Magic, Kobe, West, Shaq, Wilt, Elgin, Baylor. Like, literally, you could argue,
I'd take Kareem over Wilt. Wilt wouldn't be your starting center. Wilt, maybe not your, your backup center.
So nobody in basketball is even close to the Lakers. It's like the Yankees. You do the Yankees
all-time outfield, nobody's close. They got guys.
that don't make the outfield, that would be the best player for, you know, teams that I grew up watching.
So basically Shaq was talking about LeBron coming to the Lakers, and somebody asked him on some
podcast, is he going to be one of the greatest Lakers of all time? And here's what Shaq said.
Is it even possible to be in the greatest Laker ever? Well, take yourself out of it. Take yourself out of it.
Other than you, other than you, other than you who's the best Laker ever, the greatest Laker ever.
You can't come here and play one year and be involved in a conversation of the best Laker ever.
stop it. You kidding me?
But no disrespect to LeBron. He is a great player, but you can't come here one year and be in that
conversation. By the way, he's right. He'll never be the greatest Laker. He'll never be the greatest Laker.
In fact, I don't even think he'll get his jersey retired. I would doubt it unless he plays like seven,
eight years. I would doubt strongly if he ever got his, I mean, the best Lakers to me,
Magic Kareem, Kobe, Jerry West, Shack, and Wilt. Then you may get into an Elgin Baylor
who didn't win a title with the Lakers. He'll probably be in the Elgin Baylor class. Great player.
end of his career. I think Elgin retired
and didn't win a title with the Lakers.
Here's the thing, though.
LeBron's not coming to the Lakers to be the greatest Laker ever.
That's not a thing outside of Los Angeles.
It's like the best Yankee shortstop ever.
That doesn't mean nearly as much as best shortstop ever.
LeBron's coming here just to win a title.
Because if LeBron wins a title in L.A. as the best Laker,
he'll have then won three titles,
three different teams, been their best player and won a title.
Nobody's done that.
Michael Jordan tried to go to a second team, and it bombed.
In Washington, he couldn't make the playoffs.
It bombed.
If you go to a third franchise, you're the best player, and you are so transformative
that you win titles for a third franchise that shrinks Michael Jordan's legacy.
I don't care if you like MJ.
It makes Michael look smaller because remember, when it's all said and done,
LeBron's going to have all the stats.
All the stats are going to be overwhelmingly LeBron.
and you can say six for six, six for six, six for six.
But if you add in, oh yeah, LeBron just kept moving around the league, being the best player, and winning.
Michael tried it once.
Michael was a lousy baseball player, couldn't win any games in Washington.
It shrinks his legacy at the corner bar 30 years from now.
It's the winning argument.
Well, also, I mean, he's really only going to go down as the best calves player ever.
Well, you know, because he's not the best heat player ever.
that's closer than the best Laker.
Closer, but I mean, still wait.
You know how in baseball, this is a thing in baseball.
In Major League Baseball, when you go into the Hall of Fame, a big talking point is what hat do you wear?
Does Ken Griffey wear a Mariners hat or a Reds hat?
That's a big thing in baseball.
It gets really heated.
If you did that with LeBron, he would wear a Cavs hat first.
Right.
Miami second, and there's a little gulf there.
And then Lakers, I'm not even sure if the Lakers get a hat.
goat would be the third hat.
Like a goat hat, greatest of all time.
I mean, the gap between Cleveland and Miami is substantial.
The gap between the heat and the Lakers is the Grand Canyon.
Right.
And I would even argue that the gap between Cleveland's and Miami is really more sentimental
than it is factual because he went to four straight finals and won two championships in Miami.
So if you're going off of success...
Well, he opened the league and then he went back and he won Cleveland's first title.
Right.
So I'm saying it's more sentimental.
mental than it is. Yes, it's very emotional.
Ken Griffey, whether his numbers are here or there, he was the greatest
mariner ever. He's not the greatest Cincinnati Red ever. They had Johnny Bench and
Pete Rose and Joe Morgan. And so, I mean, he's not going to L.A. to be the greatest
Laker. That doesn't have any meaning outside of Los Angeles. He's going to be,
he wants to win a third team's best player and win a title that shrinks the legacy of
MJ some. Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
The master now takes on the student.
On Sunday, Bill Belichick and the Patriots will see a familiar bearded face when they play the Lions.
But in typical Belichick fashion, he's not worried about Matt Patricia and his familiarity with New England.
Yeah, I mean, it's important thing right now is for us to get ready to play the Detroit Lions,
what they do and how they do it and the players they do it with.
And that's really all we're focused on.
I'm sure Matt will do a great job of having them.
and then prepared for us, and he'll game plan us the way he always does,
the best way he can match up with his team against whatever he perceives our challenges to be.
But we'll have to be ready for those things and go out and be able to execute them.
And it may have to be one of my Blazing Five picks.
Maybe it is.
Maybe you have to be one of, by the way, Blazing Five back-to-back winning weeks.
Very hot right now.
Are you going to put your big bet on Blazing Five?
I'm not going to get into that.
I don't want to tell people what my bet is until I win or lose.
So tomorrow, today or tomorrow, I'll bring out the mystery suitcase.
I will put my pick in, lock it, you will keep it.
Oh, I'm responsible for it?
Yeah.
Win or lose will bring out the mystery suitcase.
That's a new schick on our show, the mystery suitcase.
All right, I like it.
So Patrick Mahomes, NFL record 10 touchdowns of two games has put the league on notice.
and now Brett Farrv is weighing in on how impressed he's been with the young quarterback.
I think the kid will get nothing but better.
Now, does that mean he's going to throw eight touchdowns next week?
More than likely not.
You're absolutely right.
There'll be some downtime.
You know, he started so good.
You know, he can only go down.
And I don't mean that in a negative way.
But you just can't mass produce like that weekend and week out.
But that's not a knock against him at all.
I think has played outstanding.
and he was drafted in the first round for a reason,
and they traded up for him because they thought enough of him.
And I think he's just proven that they made the right decision.
He's right.
That's what Patrick Mahomes has proved so far that as a talent,
Kansas City is justified in moving up.
That's the only thing we know right now.
When you watch him, you're like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You should move up for a guy like that.
Well, it's, I mean, he also got to sit behind Alex Smith.
Huge bonus.
You know, that's a bonus and get a little better
and learn how to be a pro.
It's funny coming from Brett Farb because there was a lot of comparisons to Brett Far.
He's got some Brett Farv.
He's got some Brett Farv.
And in extremely shocking news, he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Again, he's the first quarterback to open the season with consecutive Player of the Week Awards since Tom Brady in 2011.
He's good.
So, Brett Farb might be right.
And he's also got really good weapons.
Let's not kid ourselves here.
He's got better weapons than Mitch Trubisky and Sam Darnold.
And he's got better weapons than most of the young quarterbacks.
good because their defense is going to provide plenty of opportunity for them to have to score a bunch of points.
So Antonio Brown returned to practice today after a turbulent 72 hours, and Ben Rothesberger is supporting his teammates and even heaping some praise.
He told reporters today, I think that he's the best in the world.
When you're the best in the world, you want to help participate.
You want to win football games.
We're all a little frustrated that we're not winning right now.
Yeah, that's fair.
Antonio Brown is the world's best receiver this second, yes.
Julio Jones and Antonio Brown.
I think, you know, honestly, I'd rather have who.
Julio, though, than Antonio. He's a bigger, stronger athlete, so he'll be, he'll last longer in the NFL.
I mean, it's one-one. But I think, I think what Ben's doing here is just trying to quench the chaos a little bit.
Yes. You know, Mike Tomlin's getting a lot of heat for what's happening in Pittsburgh right now.
I feel like Ben's a little responsible also.
Well, he's dramatic. I mean, isn't he supposed to be the, I mean, he's the franchise quarterback.
Yes. Isn't he supposed to help steer the ship a bit?
He's a little dramatic, yes. Ben's always like limping into the line of screen.
I mean, I'm going to retire.
I don't know if I'm going to be here next year.
Like, I mean, he has to bear some of the weight in this situation.
I mean, we talk about how ridiculous that that quote is from Ian O'Connor's book about
Tom Brady, just anybody can step in here and do this.
Like, no, there are intangibles to being a successful quarterback.
And running a successful organization has factors to it.
And one of them is.
Just the greatest because he was great at basketball.
He also bought into Popovich's system.
Right.
And carried out Popovich's system.
style with the rest of the team.
He was a leader.
Like, Tom Brady has been the voice of Bill Belichick in that locker room.
He's been the messenger for the geniuses system.
So where's Ben at all this?
No, I think criticism of Ben is justified at times.
He's a little dramatic.
I mean, he's supposed to be the leader.
Right.
The player leader, yes.
Joy Taylor with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The herd lie news.
Sleep in a Casper.
100 nights.
They ship it to you for free.
hundred nights don't like it, they ship it out for free.
Casper.com code hurt.
All right, I'm your stockbroker.
We do it on Wednesdays.
You ask the questions.
I give you the answers.
Buy, sell, or hold.
Joe Clatt coming up in seven minutes.
Here we go.
Time to buy.
Colin will decide if he'll buy it.
Sell.
Or hold.
Who hold?
Buy sell or hole.
Dak Prescott will not be the Cowboys starting quarterback,
next season. Well, first of all, he's making like $800,000. So nobody is outperforming their contract
in the NFL like Dak Prescott. He's 23 and 11 as a starter. Do I think he's Carson Wentz?
And do I think the Cowboys wonder, could we beat Philadelphia regularly with a quarterback that's not
nearly as good as Carson Wentz? Those are real questions. But the Cowboys have tremendous young
pass rushers, still have a very good offensive line, a star running back, and some tasty linebackers
and corners. So John
Sell, sell, sell, sell. Listen.
What we know about the Cowboys, when
Dak hasn't played in the last three years, it's
chaos. He's not chaos.
He may be Andy Dalton, but
he's not chaos. He
will be the Cowboy starting quarterback
next year and beyond.
Buy Sell or Hold, neither the Steelers
nor Patriots will be in
the AFC championship game.
I'm going to give you a stat that is bizarre
that doesn't even sound right.
The Patriots or the Steelers,
or had been in the
AFC championship game
14 of the last 15 seasons.
So I'm just going to drop the mic right there.
Sell, sell, sell!
Yeah, one of them will be in.
And again, I like Andrew Luck, but he doesn't have the roster.
I like Deshawn Watson, but he's struggling.
I like Patrick Mahomes, but that defense is a mess.
And I like Derek Carr.
I mean, great quarterbacks get the championship games.
Tell me who it's going to be.
Nobody's got a definitive answer.
Do you know the year that one of them wasn't, that 15th?
Brady got hurt.
Well, no, but you know what year that was.
It was the one it was manning against, with the Colts against the Jets.
Oh, God, that was an awful year.
It wasn't great.
I didn't sleep that year.
By Seller Hold, Patrick Mahomes will have a better career than Jimmy Garoppolo.
Patrick Mahomes has better armed talent.
They both have great offensive play designers.
Kansas City has better players right now, though a bad defense.
The Niners have a little better defense, but are rebuilding their offensive lines.
Something to remember here.
Jimmy G, who's 8 and 1 as a starter, is older than Patrick Mahomes by three years.
So Jimmy G. spent three years of his career not playing.
So John, I'd hold on that one.
Jimmy G.G. gave three years to the bench.
Mahomes only gave one year to the bench.
So let me just wait and see how this thing kind of unveils itself.
By Solar Hold, Jason Garrett will keep his job longer than Pete Carroll.
Both got their jobs in 2010.
10, here's the difference.
Pete Carroll's had some highs,
but Pete's also got an issue.
Over the last four to five years, they have not drafted well.
Dallas actually has, and Pete's win total has been on the decline since the Super Bowl win.
13 wins, 12 wins, 10 wins, 10 wins, 6 wins.
And this year, and only very good.
So, John...
Bye, bye, bye, bye!
Jason Garrett will be around longer than Pete Carroll.
He's younger, and I think they have better young players right now than the Seahawks.
Last one, buy-solar hold.
Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the Bucks starting quarterback the entire season.
He's been in the league 14 years.
You know how many times he started an entire season?
Three.
And there's a reason.
He's a really, really, really, really special fill-in guy or backup quarterback.
Also, don't forget this about James Winston.
The last year he started, 2017, career highs and completion percentage,
passer rating and passing yards a game.
James Winston was getting better.
He's still immature.
still has bad judgment. He was getting better. So John
Sell, sell, sell. Ryan Fitzpatrick will not start the season. Joel Clad around the corner
coming up next. Good college football stuff. Chip Kelly, his quarterback, his dad is ripping Chip Kelly.
Joel Clad around the corner. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon
Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. We've got two huge college football games Saturday on Fox. First, it's number 17
TCU taking on their in-state rival Texas, followed by number 18.
Wisconsin battling Iowa in a Big Ten showdown all on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
By the way, Joel Clatt joining us. Your dad was a coach.
Yes.
But he was tough on you. You didn't start until I was a senior at quarterback.
At high school.
He said they would never start me over a kid that was older than me because he didn't want to deal with it.
My dad was a Marine.
I mean, he was tough.
Yes, he was tough.
I'm not in favor of these helicopter parents nowadays.
Okay, so UCLA's not very good because they have a new coach in the system.
And Chip Kelly and Jim Mora are opposite.
This is like when Rich Rod went to Michigan.
This is not going to be a six-game fix.
Nick Saban went to Alabama.
He lost a Louisiana Monroe first year at home.
But what did you make of Chip Kelly getting crushed by the starting quarterback's dad
who was quoted saying he's a lousy coach?
Yeah, I mean, this guy needs to go away.
I mean, quickly.
Please do your son service and go away immediately because, one, you're not right.
Two, you're not helping anybody.
You're not helping the team.
you're not helping your son.
I think that it's a ridiculous notion.
And here's the thing.
Have parents felt like this a lot in the past?
Probably.
So it's not a new feeling, all right?
It's not a new emotion.
The difference is that you used to share that at the dinner table with aunts and uncles
and maybe a brother or sister,
and it used to be kind of contained in the family.
Now you've got the Twitter sphere to throw it out there and then, you know,
the Bruin report online.
I mean, everyone grabs it and throws it out there.
I just can't, I can't stand it.
The kid is a really good player.
Good kid. My daughter went to high school with him, said people loved him.
Good kid.
Dorian Thompson Robinson is going to be a very good player.
Here's the deal with Chip Kelly.
One, he's not lousy.
His track record is unbelievable.
46 and 7 at Oregon.
Don't tell me that that was, oh, you know, he just ran into success there.
No, he didn't.
They weren't having that amount of success before he got there.
He went to the NFL and went 10 and 6, 10 and 6 with mediocre quarterbacks.
Nobody wins.
In his first year.
By the way, his first year, they went from 29th in scoring offense to fourth in
scoring offense and led the league in.
rushing. That's the Philadelphia Eagles. That's the Philadelphia Eagles went from 4 and 12 to 10 and 6 and
won the division. So don't tell me he can't coach. That's just ridiculous. Who are you, Michael
Robinson? Here's the other thing. He's playing like 14 freshmen. There are a lot of freshmen.
11 true freshmen were playing in the game that I did against Oklahoma, including the center,
the quarterback, the tailback, wide receivers, a lot of guys in the back end. They're going to be
fine. You know who I'm not worried about of the first year head coaches at Power 5 schools?
Chip Kelly. He could, I don't think they will
every game, but it's a possibility
with their schedule. They've had the 118th
ranked experience roster.
They're playing no experience whatsoever.
They're playing 18-year-old and 19-year-olds.
They also are playing one of the most
difficult schedules in the country.
Like, this was going to happen
whether it was great senior
players or not in Chip Kelly's first year.
I'm not concerned at all. Chip's going to be
a wild success at UCLA, and I'm
certain of it. No one wanted to fire Pete Carroll
after he started 1 in 4 at USC or Frank
Beamer when he was struggling when he started at Virginia Tech.
Like, give it a little time.
I saw Chip Kelly about six weeks ago.
I said, how are you going to do?
He said, just give us a year.
Yeah.
He's like, we need to rebuild some stuff.
He didn't take a shot at anybody.
He just said, we're going to start, we're going to play a bunch of high schoolers for a year.
There are 17 guys that didn't graduate or go to the NFL.
17 guys that are no longer in the program that would have been on the 2D, that basically
he had to kind of usher out the door.
The culture change going on at UCLA is drawing.
dramatic.
Yes.
Dramatic from the Mora era to the Chip Kelly era.
And Dad, go away quickly.
Okay, Alabama, I don't think they're beatable.
I don't think it's great for a sport.
You know, whenever I hear anybody say,
oh, the NBA, Golden State.
I don't think Alabama's beatable this year.
I don't think this one's great.
So it wasn't great when Michael Jordan was playing for the NBA.
Yeah, Michael Jordan was fun to watch.
Alabama's boring.
You don't think this is, Alabama's boring?
They're number one of the country in scoring offense.
55 to 7 is not interesting.
Golden State got pushed to the limit by the rockets.
Don't hate greatness. Why do you want mediocrity?
Don't be a hater of greatness.
Just accept the greatness and love it.
Because I think what's happening right now is pretty remarkable.
You could argue that Alabama this year is the greatest part of both parts of last year's Rose Bowl.
They're like the best parts of Oklahoma and the best parts of Georgia all mixed into one.
And guess what?
They might still lose.
Oh, God, no.
Why not?
First of all, they're finally good at quarterback.
They're great at quarterback.
Yeah, well, they've won national titles with a bar stool and an end table at quarterback.
Greg McElroy, AJ McCarron twice, Jacob Coger and then a true freshman in the second half last year.
Listen, I agree with you.
By the way, since 2009, since they started winning titles at Alabama, it has taken transcendent offensive performances,
namely from your quarterback in order to win a title.
You had Cam Newton, you had James Winston, Cardell Jones and Ezekiel Elliott with maybe the greatest three-game offensive stretch I've seen in a long time.
And then Deshawn Watson.
Now they have that player, so it's going to be very very.
very difficult to beat them.
I don't have this source, but I'm going to throw it out there.
USC is going to be looking for a coach over the next month.
Urban Meyer's not happy.
Lack of supported Ohio State.
USC will call Urban Meyer.
This is not sourced, but I strongly believe it's a possibility.
Urban Meyer felt like he got thrown under the bus by the university.
He didn't like it.
And USC is going to be hunting for a coach.
And they're going to put, they're not going to go through this mess at USC.
If Pete Carroll was.
eight years younger, they get him again, they're going to go after Urban Meyer.
That one's, I think, crazy. Am I nuts?
You're pausing.
Here's why I don't, it's not about the specific name that you're mentioning.
As much as it is, I think that they're going to want eventually at some point.
And listen, I think Clay maybe gets thrown under the bus a little too quickly.
But whenever they take their next swing, I think they're going to swing really big.
Thank you.
That's exactly my point.
They're going to go, they're going to swing.
Throw the name out you told me earlier today, and I think it's funny.
I love it.
Well, shoot, I mean, if you're going that road, why not force the guy who's already coaching
in your town to make a decision?
I'm not talking about Chip Kelly.
Who?
Sean McVeigh.
Throw 10 million.
Why not?
I mean, so he says no.
At least you're proving like, hey, we're out there and we're taking huge swings.
Huge swings.
Now, let's say you say, okay, well, let's go to James Franklin or let's go to, you know,
you named the coach at that point.
Kyle Shanahan.
Why not?
All I'm saying is USC after what has happened since Pete,
when if they get to this situation,
they are going to take a gigantic swing.
That's Lynn Swan.
I'm telling you that's going to happen.
I'd call.
Not the Urban Myers.
I'm not saying the, see, because it's,
I can see the sound bite right now,
clipped off.
I see you guys back there.
Not necessarily urban.
I'm just saying they're going to take a big swing.
I'm saying urban.
I know you are, but you guys are going to clip it as if I say it.
I know what you guys do.
Okay, two things.
First of all, I got a piece of video.
I want to show.
Oh, great.
Is this some sort of cherry-picked video again?
This isn't cherry-pick video.
This was your best drive of your senior year at Colorado.
Look at this video.
This is Joel Clack, quarterback at Colorado.
Look at this video.
Hold on.
Hold on.
Hold on. Watch this.
Oh, man.
You got stomped like a narc at a biker's rally, babe.
Oh, my goodness.
Look at that.
Look at that hustle.
Oh, man.
You are tough, though.
You're the kind of guy that threw bad picks.
What do we do? Look, he like lifted me onto his shoulder.
Hey, by the way, guess who that was?
Oh, my God.
John Beeson.
He got paid 500 bucks from Nevin Shapiro.
That's right.
I was in the Yahoo article.
I had a bounty.
You talk about claim to fame.
Remember Nevin Shapiro?
Yes.
He was the guy, the Miami booster.
This one right here is worth 500 bucks.
Boom, get it, John.
He earned his money on that home.
I'm telling you.
I'm glad he got paid, Joy.
Minute left, almost upset of the week.
Show me some courage.
Give me your best upset of the week.
How about Arizona State is 6 and 1 in their last 7 against Washington,
and they're getting 17 on the road at Washington.
I'm surprised by her.
I'm surprised.
Arizona State is 6.0 and 1 against the spread against Washington in their last 7,
and they're better than people think, in particular on defense,
and that's where Washington struggles.
Low-scoring affair.
I'll take the under.
By the way, Herm Edwards, I didn't, when I met Herm 10 years ago,
I said, you know, you'd work in college.
But then he was so far removed from college.
I think his stick works in college.
I kind of think it does.
He's yelling like, hey, leaving on the grass!
And I think the kids are like, yeah!
Like, that's awesome.
NFL guys are like, hey, man, keep it down up front.
Yeah.
I think it works in college.
I think it's big.
I overlooked that one.
I'll be real honest.
I overlooked it.
I thought it was a little bit wacky, but it seems so forth.
And he's got some good young players on the defensive side.
Nikiel Harry, the name to,
first round, they have the best player in the Pac-12.
that receiver, Joel Clapp.
No, no, no, Leviska Chanel from Colorado.
This is the herd hour number three, wherever you may be and however you may be listening
live in Los Angeles.
Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1.
This will be a really fun hour.
We have a packed hour in 15 minutes.
Plaxico Burris comes on.
He's a great guest.
Big news.
Joy Taylor's going to have more of this in about 20 minutes.
Big news out of Minnesota.
Jimmy Butler, one of their better.
players. They have Andrew Wiggins, Carl Anthony Towns, Jimmy Butler. That's a lot of young
stars, and you know how it is in the NBA. Somebody wants to be the man, and Jimmy Butler,
who I see in L.A. regularly, he doesn't want to be like the third guy talked about. So he has
requested a trade from the Timberwolves. He is named from one to three teams he'd like to
play for. The belief is he and Kyrie Irving want to go play for the Knicks, which would be
awesome because
basketball is better
when New York's involved, it's a great
basketball mecca. And so
we'll have more on this story in 20 minutes.
I'm speculating here. We don't know the teams
but there have been wide reports
probably since
late in the year that Kyria
the Celtics and Jimmy Butler and Minnesota
are boys. They want to end up with the Knicks.
So Joy will give you the very
latest coming up in 20 minutes.
And again, Plaxico Burris, he
played for Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh.
we'll talk about what has become kind of a circus with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But there is a new book out written by Ian O'Connor on Brady and Belichick,
and this is what jumped out to me.
The general feeling wasn't that Belichick's system could make Super Bowl quarterbacks out of all 32 starters.
But if he gave any of the top 15 quarterbacks, we could do it.
We could do it.
Mr. Kraft thinks Tom's the greatest gift ever, the coaches don't.
He is.
He's less injury prone than Aaron Rogers.
he is significantly more precise and accurate than Big Ben and Cam Newton.
And unlike Andrew Luck, he doesn't just, and you know I love Andrew Luck,
throw it up for grabs six times a game.
Oh yes, I forgot.
Now that Peyton Manning is retired,
he is the best pre-snap quarterback in the National Football League.
And I'm not sure outside of maybe Drew Breeze, it's even close.
Folks, think about this.
64-225.
And he said, that whole adult film star Garapolo thing, Tom's too smart to do that.
that Garoppolo's talented, but he'll never, ever be Brady pre-snap.
How was Belichick's
system in Cleveland? Greg Popovich has a system. You notice they don't win playoff series anymore
because Tim Duncan's not in the system? Mark Cuban's one of the smart guys in America told me
years ago owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Billionaire, right? I brought him on my show and he said,
the most overrated thing in business is ideas. He goes, everybody's got a million ideas. He goes,
I got a dozen ideas emailed me every day.
Everybody's got ideas.
What's hard to find isn't great ideas.
What's hard to find is great people.
Because nothing blows up a great idea like average people.
The San Antonio Spurr system doesn't win playoff series much anymore, do they?
The further Tim Duncan gets away out of his prime, then he retires the worst they get.
Nobody even considers them close to a title team this year.
Three things to remember about system quarterback Tom Brady.
and these are indisputable.
Number one, wide receivers under Brady have had Super Bowl MVP trophies.
Player of the Month trophies have been all pro and have left Brady,
not one or two, like eight or nine, and have gone Bermuda Triangle.
They've disappeared.
Number two is, Belichick not only lost in Cleveland, was five and eleven in New England.
And that's what Drew Bledsoe.
Dude could spin it.
And number three, the coordinator.
Charlie Weiss, Bill O'Brien, Josh McDaniels, have either been fired or haven't proven themselves
or kind of choke like a cat in a hairball when they've left Brady.
The idea that 15 other quarterbacks in the NFL, Andy Dalton, Alex Smith, Kirk Cousins,
Dak, Flacco would be the greatest of all time, is so much disrespect.
It is the most disrespectful I've ever seen.
That's like saying Andrew Bynum could have created the Spurs dynasty.
That's what that's saying.
That is outrageous.
That is, that's like saying, I mean, I don't even, it's incredible.
I mean, you got to be kidding me.
The beige water pistol be the goat.
I'm not saying that those other guys aren't great athletes or good quarterbacks or hard workers.
But the thing that separates Tom from everyone else, besides what he does on the field,
is everything he does behind the scenes to prepare.
When you watch Tom versus Time, him being obsessed with football,
he is obsessed with it.
I mean, I can't even get my arms around this, my brain around this.
All right, Jimmy Butler has requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves
that is breaking news.
We do not know the teams.
I would suspect it would be New York teams primarily the New York Knicks.
That is a potential game changer.
We have had for years and years, about 10 years,
years now. A lot of Eastern stars going out west. LeBron just came out west. Do we finally have a
western star heading out east to a New York team? Very, very interesting. Joy Taylor,
we'll have more of that coming up. But I got Plaxico Burris. I want to get to something on Pete
Carroll. I'm going to take a break and come back. I've got something I want you to know.
I've been texting somebody today in the NFL to very interesting situations.
in Seattle with Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll.
Very, very interesting.
I'm going to get to that and Plaxico Burris on the other side.
Don't go anywhere.
Want more herd?
The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app.
Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Proes in the nose.
Start with lows.
Storm impacted areas recover.
Cleaning supplies, drywall to installation.
So when you're a pro, start with lows.
Joy Taylor's going to have more on the Jimmy Butler.
He's asking for a trade, and we'll have more of that coming up.
By the way, I want to throw this out.
I got a text by an NFL guy regarding Pete Carroll.
Pete Carroll kind of threw Russell Wilson under the bus after the loss on Monday night football.
He said, Russell Wilson is, quote, overtrying a little bit.
Well, yeah, when you're running for your life, if that's overtrying, I'm going to defend Russell Wilson.
An NFL source texted me today, and he said, listen, when you get to the
be 65 years old as a head coach. Pete Carroll's like 66, 67. You can hear the footsteps that the
owners are looking for the next young guy, the next young guy. Tom Coughlin heard this. Pete Carroll hears
that. Pete's trying, got a year and a half left on his contract. His last four or five drafts
have not been very good. Pete feels the footsteps a little bit and he's going to protect his offensive
line because he drafted those guys. Those guys are part of his last four or five classes. The
defense isn't this spectacular. Pete's hearing the footsteps. Pete's hearing the footsteps. Pete's
first three drafts with the Seahawks. Remember, he was right out of college. He had a competitive
advantage over the league. His first three classes, Cam Chancellor, Sherman, Malcolm Smith, Golden
Tate, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, Russell Wilson, KJ. Wright. Since then, nothing. Four or five
draft classes, he and John Snyder have, there's no stars. And so the competitive advantage
he had coming out of college, knowing guys, because he recruited him out of high school, knowing
K. J. Wright, knowing Bobby Wagner,
knowing Golden Tate, knowing Russell
Okun, knowing Bruce Irvin, knowing Cam
Chancellor. Doesn't have that advantage. They're not
winning as many games.
I don't remember the last time a coach
threw a Hall of Fame quarterback publicly under
a bus. It's the second week in a row.
He's criticized Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson's
not the issue. It's not their problem.
The offensive line is ranked on pro football
focus. 30th.
Receivers 18th. Running back's
19th. Russell Wilson
rated fifth. Russell
not the issue. And I think Pete can kind of hear it. He feels the heat, year and a half left
on his contract, feeling the pressure. But when coaches get older, they feel it. I think Pete
feels it. Let me go now live to a guy I've talked to over a decade who he'll really
give us some insight on the situation with Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers, the former
Steeler in New York Giant via the Coward Global Satellite Network in New York, Plexico, Burris.
So you played several seasons under the United States.
Bill Cower and a couple
years under Mike Tomlin.
Was Mike Tomlin
Plaques a little looser, a little
louder? Was the locker room
different between the two?
I don't think he was a little
looser. I think Mike
Tomlin is dealing with a different
generation of athlete.
Obviously, Coach Cowell was drafting me
back in 2000. I paid for him for five
seasons. And, you know, Pittsburgh
is going to remain true to itself.
The organization to the city
and things like that.
Pittsburgh still have had, what,
four coaches in the last 75 years,
so they're not going to, you know, change overnight.
And I just think that, you know, Pittsburgh right now,
they're just in disarray right now.
Everything going on with Levy Arm Bell,
they have to walk into the office every day
and answer those questions.
And then Antonio puts the tweet out, trade me,
and we'll see what happens.
And Kansas City goes into Pittsburgh
and hangs 42 points in Pittsburgh on opening day.
So when you're not winning,
everybody's upset.
You know, Lavian Bell's interesting.
Listen, I'd pay whatever it takes to keep Big Ben,
and I'd pay mostly whatever it takes to keep Antonio Brown.
But I will say this.
The NFL had 20 running backs drafted this year.
Many of the good ones were like third, fourth, fifth, six.
Do you pay Lavian Bell plaques,
or, because they have a very good offensive line,
Juju Smith-Schuster is going to be great too?
Do you trade Lavion and, in 15?
your defense because right now Pittsburgh's defense is not good enough to me to win a Super Bowl.
Would you consider moving Levian Bell even though he's remarkably talented?
I would not.
I think Levian Bell is the best back in all of football.
I mean, I really do.
But Pittsburgh Steelers cannot be the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense without them.
I think they have to realize that.
And over time, if you look at the Pittsburgh Steelers, they don't really deal with guys still on the contract and trying to give them extensions.
It's a bad situation for them because I don't think Levyon Bell is going to budge.
I don't think the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to budge.
And it's just a bad situation getting worse for them offensively.
I mean, given they scored 30 points last weekend.
But, you know, without Levi-on-Bell, Antonio Brown can't get a double team off for him.
You know, teams are going to try to neutralize him and take him out of football games
and let other guys beat him like James and Juju.
But I think you have to find a way to come to terms with Levi-ion.
on bail and get him back on the football field because you can't be that offense without him.
How much blame does Big Ben deserve? You know, Big Ben can be a little dramatic. You've played with
him. He can be a little erratic. I don't think he's the easiest guy to coach. Is some of this
Tomlin's getting the heat, but maybe some of this is Big Ben? I don't really think it's Big Ben at all.
You look at it last week. I mean, they didn't play well against the Cleveland Browns two weeks ago,
but then they come back
and they play a Kansas City team
which is very good
outside of that
I think Patrick Mahomes
is one of the top five quarterbacks
in football
but getting back to Ben
I mean you go out and score 30 points at home
you just got to have your defense
get a few stops so you can win that football game
nobody expects them to come in
and score 42 points
I don't think the I don't think
the onus is on Ben at all
they just got to find a way
to stop somebody on defense
and get this Levyon Bell
situation rectify so
so they can go back to being Pittsburgh Steelers.
You know, it's interesting.
I was saying in terms of Josh Gordon
that I would have no problem bringing in a Randy Moss.
Randy Moss may have been at times difficult,
but I never felt he was dysfunctional.
I never felt Randy Moss was dysfunctional.
I felt he was smart, demanding could be a little difficult,
but I'd take the chance on him.
With Josh Gordon, we have somebody who has struggled with addiction.
that can be professionally dysfunctional.
I don't know if I would bring him in.
I don't see that working in New England.
Is he worth the risk for Tom Brady and the Patriots, in your opinion?
You know what?
I have to tip my hat to the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick
because they're sitting here saying, you know what?
The upside to bringing Josh Gordon into our team and on our offense,
you know, he adds value.
You know, you put them beside a guy like Grunkovsky,
and, you know, he presents matchup problems for them in the red zone.
And when I saw that Josh Goan was going to the Patriots,
I thought it was the best team that he could possibly go to.
You get to compete for a Super Bowl this year,
and you get to play with it,
and you get to pay beside Tom Brady.
Trust me, every wide receiver in his league wants to play next to number 12.
And I think it's a great situation for him,
a great situation for him that giving him a chance to resurrect his personal life
and resurrect his career.
He couldn't be in a better place if he wants to get everything in order.
By the way, you're in New York.
You're a former giant.
Right.
And the Giants could have taken Sam Darnold because Eli has struggled last four years.
They passed and the Jets got Sam Darnold.
Now, he's young.
Right.
I mean, he's playing Jacksonville in a couple weeks.
He's going to get beat up against Jacksonville.
He's a rookie quarterback.
Their defense is great.
But what have you seen with Sam Darnold?
Are we over?
Are we hyperventilating here?
What do you see?
What don't you see with him?
Obviously, a week ago, when they paid the, when they played the,
Detroit lines. I mean, I was saying to myself, you know, either this guy's really that good or the
Detroit lines are just that bad. And it was the second thing, I think Detroit lines are just that
bad. I think people are over hyping him right now, but, you know, we'll see how he performs in the
remainder of the season. They did go out and lose to the Miami Dolphins last week, you know,
but some people are already saying that he's a Hall of Fame and he's the next great quarterback,
so on and so forth. But you got to get, you got to give.
you got to give this man a little time to grow and see how he's going to perform.
And finally, Des Bryant, I believe is good enough to still play in this league.
I do not believe he's a one.
I think he's a two or a three.
He'd be a three in Atlanta.
He'd be a two on most teams.
But I think he can play.
What's keeping him out of this league?
You know what?
That I don't know.
You know, I've been kind of asking myself the same question.
Is either something going on with Des, Brian.
internally with these organizations that we don't know about,
maybe the Dallas Cowboys are bad mouthing them, so on and so forth.
But with that being said,
you know, Des Ryan is not that elite receiver that he was, you know,
five or six years ago.
You know, just three or four years ago,
he was a 13, 100, 14-yard receiver.
And it just seemed like his production just rapidly declined over night.
I think he has to look yourself in the mirror and be honest with himself
and say, you know what?
You know, I'm not that guy that I was, you know, five, six years ago.
I'm not a number one.
Maybe I'm a two or three in certain places.
But, you know, I think he just got to swallow his prize, so to speak,
and be honest with itself and just, you know, sign with the team, go contribute.
Hey, if you can hang out with Jerry Jones in the box with the Jay-Z concert,
he should be able to give you a job.
I don't understand that at all.
But you're hanging out with the boss, but you can't play on the football team.
It doesn't make sense to me.
That says right there that there's something going on that we don't know about.
I don't know why jazz is not on the team right now.
By the way, Plax, go to the end of your career.
As a wide receiver, when did you know, okay, I'm not a number one?
Because you were a number one for most of your career.
What was the tipping point for you?
Was it a practice, a game, an injury?
What was it?
No, it wasn't a game or a practice.
Anything like that.
When I got to Pittsburgh in 2012, I understood my role.
They had Mike Wallace.
They had a young Antonio Brown, they had Emmanuel Sanders.
I was the veteran of that group.
Mike Tomlin and some coaches would come to me and say,
hey, teach these guys how to be better pros, teach them how to work.
You have to understand your role as you get older.
Clearly, I was the number one wire receiver when I got to Pittsburgh in 2012,
but I accepted the role.
I knew exactly what they expected of me.
And you know, you just have to go with it.
You can't not be honest with yourself and say, hey, I'm still number one.
No, he's not.
You're not.
Father time is father time.
It's undefeated.
So you just got to accept the role and move on.
Plax, it's great talking to you.
11 years in the NFL, a Steeler under Cower and Mike Tomlin.
Good wishes.
We'll talk soon.
All right, thanks, man.
You bet, Plax.
Joy Taylor, ooh, we got some breaking news.
Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Much is happening.
All right.
Jimmy Butler's time with the Timberwolves is apparently coming to an end.
Wow.
He has requested a trade according to Shams Shariniya and John Krasinski of the Athletic.
They have both reported that Butler didn't just request a trade.
He brought a list of one to three teams which he'd like to be traded to.
So Shams tweeted Jimmy Butler has requested a trade from Minnesota.
League sources say that Butler has given Minnesota a list of one or two teams.
that he's willing to sign an extension with an anticipation of the trade.
Dibodeau has been resistant to the idea of trading Butler.
This is from John with Media Day on Monday in training campsets begin on Tuesday.
The clock is ticking.
And now we have a tweet from Woad saying that the three preferred destinations for a trade for Jimmy Butler,
according to sources that tell ESPN, the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the NICs.
Those three teams have max cap space to sign Butler as a free agent in July.
So the Nick, I'd root for the Knicks there. Brooklyn's a mess.
I'd go Clippers or Knicks.
I see him in Los Angeles from time to time.
He likes L.A.
So I've got to be honest with you.
That's kind of fun.
So Knicks, Clippers, or Brooklyn.
You know, here's what's funny about this deal.
So Minnesota's been the team we keep waiting to pop.
Right.
And I like Carl Anthony Towns, and I like Andrew Wiggins.
But Wiggins is too finesse.
He's got no dog, no alpha.
and Carl Anthony Towns in 2018 is a center.
And this Minnesota thing, it's never going to work.
It's just one of those things where we kept waiting for,
dude, how many years are we into this Minnesota thing?
And it's not popped, and now their best player wants to go.
It didn't work.
Apparently, there's some other stuff going on as well.
Why?
Because Andrew Wiggins' brother responded to Sham's tweet with hallelujah,
the smiling emoji.
Okay.
And the hands in the air.
So Andrew Wiggins wants to.
be paid like the best player. I've watched him play live four times. No dog, no alpha. He's a 17, 18, 19
point a game guy on a really, really good team. By the way, he's a nice player. He, you know,
he's a nice player. But the fact that he doesn't understand that to beat the Warriors or Rockets,
you've got to have three great players. And his brothers now, hallelujah, that's coming from
Andrew. That tells you that Andrew Wiggins, again, I think this whole thing, he doesn't want to
share it. He doesn't, that thing's a mess. This is the most disappointing NBA story in the last
decade. I've been sitting waiting for this thing to pop. Yes, you and a lot of people have,
this is like when you put something in the microwave and you can't wait to eat a casserole, but it
needs to be warmed up. So you put that casserole in the microwave for like a minute. And
in Minnesota, you put it in for a minute. Oh, you just can't wait for 30 seconds and 20 seconds and
10 seconds, except the microwave in Minnesota, it never opens. And the casserole is just stuck
in the microwave and you never get to eat it.
And I've been sitting there now for five years waiting for this baby to pop and it's still
cold casserole.
Well, apparently, according to Woji, will be with the Nets, the Clippers, or the New York Knicks.
I think we're all kind of rooting for that to be the Knicks.
So after just two games, the Rams look like the best team in the NFL.
And after beginning the off season with the eighth best odds to win the Super Bowl,
the Rams have now passed the Patriots as the favorites to win the big game.
So the Rams opened with 20 to 1 odds and now they have updated to 5 to 1.
way, one of the smartest guys I know in terms of NFL betting, Steve Fesick,
Steve Fesick is the only guy that's ever won the Las Vegas Hilton super contest twice.
In the whole country, he's won it twice.
Very smart dude.
He's got the Rams easily as his number one team.
And he's just a guy that knows his stuff.
He's no emotion, just win, win, win.
It's just about data.
Let me tell you something.
One of the things you said earlier is the Rams are actually a very quiet team.
First of all, they're brand new to Los Angeles, so L.A. is just learning to love them.
Forget the league. We're just getting our arms around them.
So you got these high-profile teams.
The Steelers are making noise every five minutes.
The Patriots, Belichick, Brady is news.
Dak, Des, Jerry Cowboys.
Aaron Rogers is hurt.
Chicago now, Khalil Mack, John Gruden.
You have all these major stories in the NFL.
And the Rams, even though they're in Los Angeles.
They're just silent flying along.
They're like Jacksonville with more sky.
scrapers. Like, they're this really good roster nobody
talks about. The Rams
are kicker,
punter, coordinators,
coaches, O-line, D-lines.
They have the best secondary in the league. They are
stacked. Running back superstar,
wide receiver top five group. The only
part of that team that's not loaded is
linebacker, and they'll draft that.
They've drafted very well. They'll draft that next year.
Well, remember this offseason when they acquired
all these big names, the question was, is
Sean McFay going to be able to manage all these big
personalities. And it's like, what personality? I don't know, I don't even know what the Rams are.
They're just great. There's great and there's no dysfunction.
Zero so far. So Ryan Fitzpatrick showed up to his postgame interview on Sunday,
looking extra swaggy. And a lot of people compared him to Connor McGregor. So Fitzpatrick
told Dan Patrick yesterday that he was once mistaken for McGregor while walking around the Mall
of America last year. Let's take a listen. So the first time I heard it was last year we were
playing in Minnesota, so I was walking around the Mall of America, and somebody came up to me
and started talking about my fight with Mayweather.
And it took me a minute.
I didn't really know what they were talking to.
And then when they walked away, it was like, I came to the realization that they thought
I was Connor McGregor.
I hadn't gotten it other than that.
And then it wasn't even, you know, my intent or thought going into that interview.
But I get it.
I get it with the side-by-sides now.
Have you ever been mistaken for someone?
I never have.
I don't look like anybody.
Look at those.
They do look a little alike.
We have a guy that works in the department.
We have a guy that is a Ryan Fitzpatrick lookalike in our department.
If Tampa Bay wins Monday, we'll put him in best for last.
He looks just like, I'm not joking, Ryan Fitzpatrick.
They do look alike.
But that's intense to have someone come up and have a whole conversation with you
thinking that you're a different person.
I mean, Conn McGregor is a great fighter, so it's not the one.
One guy one time came up to me and said, a young kid said, hey, Skip!
And I was like, Bayliss?
Skip.
Is he going to get a skip Baylis?
That's awesome.
That's the only one I've ever had.
People think I look like a bunch of different people.
Who?
I mean, I get it all the time.
You do?
Yeah.
I've had people come up to me like, oh, I saw you out last night.
Like, you have fun?
Like, no, I was not there.
That was not me.
I was at home doing nothing.
Yeah.
But hopefully my doppelganger is behaving herself.
Joy Taylor, boy, that Jimmy Butler stuff.
Joy Taylor, Hurdline News.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurdline News.
Kind of the story today has been the book out by Ian O'Connor on Tom Brady,
and the quote that I just cannot believe, somebody within that organization is quoted saying,
it's not like Belichick system could make Super Bowl quarterbacks out of all 32 NFACs.
all starters, but if you gave us any of the top 15, we could do it.
Mr. Kraft thinks Tom is the greatest gift ever.
The coaches don't. That is so disrespectful.
I mean, if I was Brady reading that, I would be like, Bears, you interested?
The guy here in New England may want to play with you on that defense if you bench Trubisky.
It's just hard for me to, that somebody in that staff thinks that Andy Dalton and Joe
Flacco and Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins could give you the dynasty is just stunningly arrogant to me.
I've said before the one team that makes sense,
Matt Nagy's a great offensive guy, knows Andy Reid, Brady knows both, would respect both,
and that defense, he could go into Aaron Rogers Division with a better defense,
cap space.
That looks interesting to me.
Coming up, I've got a list, though, that Brady's going to love and hate at the same time,
and best for last.
Tomorrow on Thursday night football, rookie Sam Donald and the Jets take on the surprising
grounds exclusively on the NFL network and starting in week four, Fox becomes the new network home
to Thursday night football when the Vikings battle Jared Gough, Todd Gurley, and the Rams.
Darnold short week, rookie on the road, Brown's defense.
Could be interesting.
You see that panel over to my right?
We're going to do a list here.
There's a new book out by Ian O'Connor claims that Brady wanted a divorce from Belichick at one point because
18 years with somebody, they're grumpy, they never give you a compliment.
And it got me thinking about the 18-year quest of Tom Brady,
that when you're really great at something, for so long, you have so many rivals and so many roadblocks.
I don't remember Elway having 10 rivals.
I don't remember Montana having 10 rivals.
But Brady is dealing with so many different fronts and adversaries and rivals
trying to knock him off that perch.
That's today's best for last.
After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet.
Quit holding out on us, cowherd.
It's the best for last.
These are the 10 rivals, in my opinion, of either rivals,
adversaries, people trying to knock Tom Brady from his perch.
Some intentional, some unintentional.
Number 10 would be Eli Manning.
There's a reason that Tom won a decade without winning a Super Bowl,
it's because in 2007 and 2011, the New York Giants and Eli Manning beat him.
It ruined the 2007 year in which that may have been the most complete football team
in the kind of salary cap free agent era.
Number 10, Eli Manning.
Number nine.
Roger Goodell suspended him for four games.
Tom Brady called it unfair.
The NFLPA filed an appeal, which they lost.
Tom Brady went on to get the last.
last laugh beating Atlanta for the Super Bowl, but there's no question that he was a roadblock,
and this is something the flake gate that will be mentioned when his career is over,
closer to the first paragraph than the last.
Number eight.
Joe Montana, and I have to put this in the list because for a long time, Montana and Terry Bradshaw
had four Super Bowl rings, and they were like the great quarterback with the rings,
and Tom eventually had to surpass that.
He now has five rings and four MVPs, but it's a friendly relationship.
relationship. Montana was a
Niner. Brady grew up
in the Bay Area. Montana
was his favorite player.
So there was an initial roadblock,
but I never felt like it was
as big a roadblock or an impediment
as others did.
Number seven. I would say actually the Boston
Media. They were given Tom
backrubs for about 15 years.
But in recent years, the Boston
media is pushing back. He's hung up
on a local radio station a couple
times. Remember this in July when Julian Edelman was suspended and some, and Edelman is part of the
Tom Brady Clinic has Alex Guerrero. Remember this moment when the media pressed Tom Brady
on that suspension? Tom, with Julian tested positive. A lot of people connected it to Alex Guerrero.
What's your reaction is that? You think it's fair? No comment. That's just ridiculous.
Tom. I'm out. He left. He walked away. Now you can't on radio hear it much. But
That's increasingly been a factor.
The media now in Boston, no longer just backrubs and lattes.
They're pushing back now.
Number six.
This is weird, but Giselle, his wife, Giselle Bunchin.
Remember, Monday morning quarterback reported that Giselle has tried to find friends of Tom like
Jay Feeley to talk him into retirement.
She went on CBS this morning and said Tom had suffered a concussion and then Tom had to answer it.
Tom Brady has been quoted saying if we're up to my wife, she would have me retire today.
Now, again, the most powerful person in any married man's life is his wife, and she wants him out of the game.
She wants a healthy Tom at 50, 60, and 70.
So she has been, to some degree, that is a discussion at the end of every football season.
Number five.
This is my top 10 list of people.
Tom Brady's been so great, so good for so long.
How many rivals and adversaries he's already had, I would put number five, Jimmy Garoppolo.
Sports Illustrated reported that Bill Belichick texts him after every win in San Francisco.
He's the only quarterback that New England's ad that's better looking than Brady.
And he won two games as a starter during deflategate.
And there are reports that Tom forced him out of town that said,
listen, I'm not going to have this guy hovering over my shoulder.
So he's a bit of an adversary.
I mean, when Garoppolo wins, you think about Brady.
Number four.
Aaron Rogers.
Tom's always been the great team quarterback.
Aaron Rogers has always been the talent.
And statistically, Rogers has several categories.
He leads Brady in.
Aaron's got the all-time best passer rating.
Brady's third.
Rogers has the best touchdown interception ratio of all time.
When you think of Rogers now, they're conjoined.
You think of Brady, you think of Rogers.
You think of Rogers.
You think of Brady.
Number three.
I don't think there's any question now that Belichick is not always the world's best social lubricator in that locker room with Tom Brady.
The new book out by Ian O'Connor stipulates, matter of fact, 350 people interviewed that Tom has thought about a public divorce,
that Tom Brady has found it increasingly difficult to go to work for a guy that doesn't give compliments that's rough on him,
and that is incredibly demanding, and won't keep players like Wes Welker or Danny Amandola, who Tom has,
not only professionally in need of, but personally close to.
Number two.
Time.
I think we all look at the number two adversary for Tom Brady is how long can he stay healthy.
He can no longer deal with a severe injury because I just don't think he'd want to do the rehab to get back.
He's 41 years old.
And by the way, he talked about in that documentary he did Tom versus Time, which if you haven't seen it's very good,
he talked about defying age in the National Football League.
A lot of players retired.
33, you know. I mean, you look at football 10 of your career. That's an amazing career.
I mean, I think the last eight years of my career have been better than the first 10,
though I should just prolong it. That's what I'm trying to do.
And the number one rival roadblock obstacle would be Peyton Manning.
That's the single best individual rivalry. It's the magic and bird of the NFL.
I can't think a magic without bird vice versa. And all of Montana's big,
rivals, they played in the AFC.
Tom's played around the corner and they often met in the playoffs.
Now, Brady played him 17 times when 11 and 6.
Peyton got the last laugh beating Brady in the AFC championship on his way to his final
Super Bowl.
Peyton has always been the more relatable one.
Y'all kind of country, little southern, very relatable, very Midwest.
Tom has been supermodel, elite.
Ugs, you know, the private jet, the private watch,
Peyton Manning's Oreos, Buick, Subway sandwiches kind of thing.
So to me, that's the greatest, the greatest individual rivalry in the NBA was Magic and Bird.
And the greatest NFL rivalry, individual rivalry, was Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.
But I think, you know, why we did this today,
when you're as great as long as Tom Brady is, you have so many.
blocks, so many rivalries. Montana and Elway and Marino didn't have nearly that many. And Tom last year
played at an MVP level. So there's a real opportunity here for Tom to play this year and at least
one to two more, at least. Yeah, we did because of that and because people are making outrageous
statements about really anyone could have just stepped in and created a dynasty that is
Patriots.
350 people were interviewed by Ian O'Connor. You have to find out who said that.
I have faith in you.
You can get out of him.
300.
Somebody literally said inside that building,
we're not saying we could win Super Bowls here with all 32 quarterbacks,
but if you gave us the top 15,
what you're basically saying is Andy Dalton's about 15th.
You think you could create this dynasty with Andy Dalton.
I do think there are some other transcendent talents that could have been successful.
By the way, you don't think, I'll throw this out there.
Take Big Ben.
Big Ben would drive Belichick insane.
He's not as coachable.
He's not as good pre-snap.
Big Ben is harder to quarterback than Brady.
Aaron Rogers can be condescending.
He ad-libs a lot.
A lot of times pre-snap, he won't audible out of place.
Aaron Rogers and Big Ben may have more, quote, talent.
They would not be as consistently great.
They're much harder to coach.
There's too many moving pieces on a football team
in a football organization to just say that someone else could step in there and do that.
There are other talents.
There are other big arms.
There are other cerebral quarterbacks.
But you have to be the perfect specimen for that organization, for that system and for
Bill Belichick style in order for that success to happen.
Will Chamberlain is more talented than Tim Duncan.
But Wilk Chamberlain would not have created that dynasty in San Antonio because
Wilk Chamberlain was a flake.
Willed Chamberlain was hard to coach.
Wilts Chamberlain was into Wilk Chamberlain.
Wilt's got more talent than Tim Duncan.
But I mean, I've talked to this about old NBA guys.
They're like, listen, Wilt was great.
Wilt was a flake.
Tim Duncan, zero flake.
So when you have a strong system and a strong coach like Belichick or Popovich,
it's not just getting a talented guy.
It's getting a guy that will take your message
and he'll be your lead troop to the other troops.
It's just so arrogant to assume that everything that's happening there
because of the coaches or coaching staff.
That's wild.
It's so crazy.
It's crazy.
I just think people, like Tim Duncan and Brady,
I think people forget their coachability and their leadership qualities.
Now, tomorrow, Peter King and Greg CoSell, Sam Darnold plays.
You know I'm fired up.
Tomorrow's going to be a great show.
