The Jeff Cavins Show (Your Catholic Bible Study Podcast) - Thinking Out of the Tabernacle

Episode Date: May 24, 2024

Are we called to “market” the faith? Or, is evangelization more about the simple and direct approach? Jeff Cavins addresses these questions and encourages all believers to start pursuing effective... ministry. He warns against being clever or catchy, but to instead focus on the good news, the message of the Gospel. Snippet from the Show It is better to be effective in ministry than to be cute or catchy. Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Jeff Kavens show, where we talk about the Bible, discipleship, and evangelization, putting it all together in living as activated disciples. This is show 377, thinking out of the tabernacle. Welcome to the show, my friend. I'm Jeff Kavans, if this is the first time that you have been joining me. Welcome. This is where we come to talk about the Word of God and evangelism and evangelization. You know, evangelization is a Catholic term. Evangelism is a Protestant term. We talk about them both. And we talk about the life of a disciple and learning how to share Christ with other people, which is something I want to talk to you about that topic of sharing Christ with people. I want to talk about that today. As always, if you do want to show notes and you're not getting them, all you've got to do is text my name, one name, Jeff havens, no spaces, and you can text it to the number 3-3-777. We'll get you on the list, and we'll get those to you every single week. And I do have some scriptures today that I'm going to be talking about. And so if you're running, you're in the car, or you are working out in a farm somewhere, and you just don't have anything to write stuff down with. Well,
Starting point is 00:01:19 then we got that covered for you. Okay, so I entitled this, Thinking Out of the Tabernacle. Now, you probably have heard that phrase before, thinking out of the box. We need to think out of the box. And you'll hear corporations come together. You get boards coming together from different organizations, nonprofits, church, and so forth. And people say, you know, we've got to do something new. We've got to come up with something new here. And so inevitably, somebody's going to say, you know, guys, we got to think out of the box because we've been in the box, right? Well, in some ways, I would say we need to think out of the tabernacle. I'm not saying think independently of the tabernacle, but to think out of, think out of the tabernacle in the sense that
Starting point is 00:02:04 what we need to do as a church in this broken world is we need to get what is in the tabernacle out to the people so that they can be revitalized, changed, born again, the scripture says, born of the spirit. You know, the tabernacle is the very center of our parish, isn't it? If you go into most parishes, I say most because some don't, but if you go into most of our parishes, you will find the tabernacle prominently displayed in a beautiful place up on the altar. And so everybody that comes into the church knows where the tabernacle is and the tabernacle contains not the tools of the priest like I thought growing up. I literally thought that's where Father kept his tools for Mass. but I later found out, no, that I was wrong. It contains the Eucharist, the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus.
Starting point is 00:03:02 That is the source of grace. It's the greatest source of grace for us as Catholics. And anything that we can do to draw attention to the Eucharist is good. And you know this year we're going to be gathering in Indiana, Indianapolis, and we're going to be focusing on the Eucharist. And that is a very good thing. For the vast majority of the week, though, I've got to tell you this.
Starting point is 00:03:24 And I don't know if you've ever thought about it. We in the Twin Cities, right up here next to heaven, we have one of the largest percentages of 24-7 adoration chapels in the country. I think we've got like 180 parishes or something like that. And I think we've got over 50 that have this 24-7 adoration. I might be wrong in that, but I know it's a huge number. And I know my parish has it. And so the vast majority of the week, there may be a few people praying and around the clock
Starting point is 00:03:58 in the chapel where the tabernacle is or where the Eucharist is, I should say, the blessed sacrament displayed in a monstrance, the real presence of Jesus. And people will sign up around the clock to pray. And the idea is don't leave Jesus alone when he is exposed in the monstrance there. And so we really do have a good thing going in the Twin Cities. Minnesota is doing a lot of really interesting things. And I'm proud to be a Minnesotan. But I've got to tell you this, that while we do have a number of places that have 24-7 adoration,
Starting point is 00:04:36 there are so many churches around the country that do not have adoration or do not have 24-7 adoration. And consequently, Jesus is in the tabernacle. True. Yes, all good. And he is with us. That is all good. Don't get me wrong. But what happens is, is that the tabernacle for a large part of the week is alone. Lights dim, cars drive by, and just not a lot of attention given to that. Now, as we are focusing on the Eucharist this year in the Catholic Church in America, I really do believe that God is calling us to come up with new methods in order to bring attention to the Eucharist at a local level and to lead other people from the outside into this marvelous gift of the Eucharist and into the family of God. Now, there's one way
Starting point is 00:05:38 that we've been doing this for years and years and years. And when I say we, meaning Catholics, also Protestants and all my Protestant brothers and sisters who are listening, welcome to you, I love you as well. But what we have a tendency to do is we have our church and we build our church and we all come to our church and we are catechized, formed in the faith, and we celebrate together. We have even fall bingo and fall festival and everything else. But what we have set up for ourselves is this. It's sort of ingrown. We do this here, which fine. It's fine. It's fine. fine if we do that, you know, within the context of our own parish. This is family. This is fellowship. Yay. So, but we have that and we sort of have this idea that if people are going to
Starting point is 00:06:24 join with us, they're going to have to figure out how to get here. They're going to have to figure out how to get into this church so that they can play bingo. I'm kidding. They have to figure out how to come here to find this life. And that's what I mean today when I say, we need to think out of the tabernacle. We need to go out with this new life that we have, the life that the Eucharist gives us, the life that we received in the mass. And then the end of the mass, we talk about going out at that point. And we go out nourished by the Eucharist to do the work of the Lord. So if indeed the Eucharist is the greatest gift to the world, which it is, then how do we get that news out into the highways and the byways rather than just expecting that if people want this new
Starting point is 00:07:19 life and they want to experience eternal life and the joy of the gospel, well, they know where we're at because we have a Facebook page. It doesn't work like that at all. Oh, Facebook page. Okay, so you have a Facebook page. You know, Jesus didn't say, go into all the world and make sure you got a good Facebook page. He said, go into the world and make disciples. You go into the world and make disciples. So I want to talk to you today, not about big solution ideas, not that, but about ideas in general. Ideas that work in unison with the Holy Spirit to get the gospel out into the lives of broken people. Okay? Hey, by the way, just want to share this with you. Two days ago, I was with Russell Brand on his show, talking about the good things of the Catholic Church and
Starting point is 00:08:14 Jesus and coming to a more in-depth understanding of who Jesus is. And I got to tell you, we really hit it off. We had a wonderful hour together on the Russell Brand show, stay free. And it should be on Rumble by now. But Ascension is going to put some information out about this. And if I find out when it's posted, I'll put it in the show notes too. but pray for Russell Brand, pray for others who are seeking and asking questions. God is opening up doors or we can talk to all kinds of people, you know, about the good things
Starting point is 00:08:47 of the Lord. I'll tell you this, I'm impressed with his humility in that he is a seeker, and he really is asking the right questions, and he's studying, and he's thinking, and he's synthesizing in really an inspiring way to me. And I really felt like, you know, he was baptized recently, and I really felt like a, I I had a brother there in talking to him, and we talked after the show and just hit it off. So pray for Russell Brand. Okay, so, but my question is this, are we stuck in a rut?
Starting point is 00:09:19 A rut of consistently consuming Catholicism in the house, but not doing Catholicism outside of the house. Now, I can't judge, but our expressions of faith have a habit of looking a lot like the way the world markets things. And so my question to you is, are we called to market the faith the way the world markets cars or markets vacations in Jamaica or markets goat keifer or other things? Or do we use new methods and new ardor to not be clever but to be effective in bringing this into the cracks of life, into the crevices of life, where the broken, are, where the needy are, the outcast, the people in the margin, rather than those just people who happen to be listening to podcasts all day or television, you know, there's so many broken people out there that are, they're not social media people. And they certainly aren't going to make their way into your parish. Most likely, I should say, barring a miracle. So there's marketing
Starting point is 00:10:29 ideas, sure, I get it. But marketing the doing of the word, marketing the success of the gospel, I don't think it translates. And the reason I don't think it translates really well, and in some ways you can't measure it, is that the work of the kingdom at times is incredibly personal. It's very personal. It's you with one person and you're not going to put their they're garbage on the internet you're not going to talk to people well guess what i talked to this couple that they were having a terrible message and uh you know and you're not going to put all that on there it's very personal it's you and them talking together it isn't meant to be quantifiable it's not meant to be marketed and also it's very unique the work of the kingdom is very
Starting point is 00:11:22 unique to each individual or community and oftentimes the success doesn't get quantified like many, you know, like how many books did you sell? How many people came to your conference? And the process is one, one man plants, another waters, but God causes the increase. So we don't know all the numbers of people who are planting seed or the people who are watering that seed. We have some idea of how many people we increase by in the kingdom of God. but it's hard to market seed planting and watering. People don't think that is attractive enough, you know. So we're not going to be marketing that kind of a thing.
Starting point is 00:12:03 So here's the deal. Due to the nature of growth, I don't think that the growth of the church can be marketed well. And I'm even hearing from some parishes that are, the names have been on their books for years and years and years, but they don't come, but they remain on there. But they're being honest about it. And I was saying, we're moving it to a different category. these people used to be here, we're not sure where they're at anymore, and we're not going to count them among the regular attenders. So why try to do big things? That's what I'm getting at here in some ways. Why try doing big things when the nature of the kingdom of God is really working in
Starting point is 00:12:46 the small things, in the crevices and the cracks of society? The big things. Now, that's not how the kingdom grows with just these big things, as evidenced by Jesus' mustard seed analogy, said the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. It's very small, the smallest of seeds, but when it's planted, watered and grows, it grows into quite a good tree for the birds to nest in and find refuge in. So for the kingdom to grow, there needs to be a strategy that works in quiet places, like a coffee shop, or a bench at a park, or stand. standing out in front of Walmart or standing in a line to get, you know, baseball tickets or something. How do we bring this incredible message in this gospel to the crevices and cracks of society rather than thinking we just have to have big events and invite a few people put on a big event and hope that something happens?
Starting point is 00:13:48 I just don't think that that is what was intended. when Jesus said, go out into all of the world and make disciples. So rather than always thinking that the change in people's lives only happens at big conferences or through cleverly devised social media plans, God can use all of it, don't get me wrong, but the process that God presented within the New Testament is still the process that seems to bring the maximum amount of growth. is every person that's baptized, confirmed, and receiving the Eucharist, is a representative of Jesus, and they go out into their world, and they are activated disciples sharing Christ with people,
Starting point is 00:14:37 not just baptized, confirmed, received the Eucharist, and now they just attend church every week. They might be out of committee here and there and that type of thing. It's good. But it's not what Jesus planned at the beginning or what he expected of us. He really expected each and every one of us to be active, activated. I wrote that book called The Activated Disciple, put that in the show notes. And he expected each and every one of us to take on the mission of the church. Because listen, the conference can't get into the cracks in the crevices. But you can.
Starting point is 00:15:12 You know where those are. You see those people. I don't. You do. I see people that you don't see. Now, the other analogy here is, I want to talk about this for a moment. And that is this. I want to talk about this teaching on leaven in the Bible. And leaven is both good and bad in the Bible. And I want to look at that. But first, we're going to take a break. And when we come back, I'm going to get into that. And I'm going to show you using the Exodus that God isn't always about using the clever things of a culture at all. And so we'll be back. You're listening to the Jeff Kaven show.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Hi, my name's Father Mike Schmitz. I want to let you know about an exciting announcement that could revolutionize the way you listen to the Bible in the air and the catechism in the year. Ascension has released a new Bible and Catechism app called the Ascension app. No, here's what you get. In this app, you get the entire text of the Great Adventure Bible. Just incredible. You also get the entire text of the catechism of the Catholic Church, as long with the Catechism in a year podcast, the Bible in year podcast, and transcripts for each episode.
Starting point is 00:16:22 If you're like, I'm tired of listening to that guy, I just want to read it. There's incomplete transcripts from each and every episode. One thing that makes this app incredibly unique is that it includes special features that make connections between the Bible and the catechism so crystal clear through color-coded references and all these links. The hyperlinks are amazing. I tried it out and I'm like, oh my gosh, it kind of has changed the way I read through the catechism, kind of changed the way I read through the Bible.
Starting point is 00:16:46 These features will help you navigate the Bible and catechism even more seamlessly so you can get more out of your experience. Also, the app provides almost 1,000 answers to Bible questions. The people who listen to the Bible in the year, they wrote in with their questions. Almost 1,000 answers, and those answers come in the form of audio clips, video clips, as well as resources excerpted from some of Ascension's published works. If you want to download this app for free, super simple. Just go to the app store and search for Ascension app.
Starting point is 00:17:15 I am telling you, if learning about the Bible and the catechism is important to you, then this app will change your life. Okay, you are back. Thank you. Let's continue on, shall we? We're talking about thinking out of the tabernacle so that we can bring people to the tabernacle. We can bring people to the Eucharist. And they can feast on the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus, the greatest source of grace known to mankind.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Now, I was talking about leaven before the break. You know what leaven is. You put leaven in the dough and leavenites, the whole dough, new word. and it causes the bread to rise. All right? Now, in the Old Testament, it's generally spoken of as bad. And in the New Testament, it is spoken of as both bad and good. And so it's both bad and good.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Levin is good when describing the growth and influence of God's word in the world. Levin is good when describing the growth of his kingdom and changed lives and getting into the crevices in the cracks of society. Levin takes, it's a very interesting thing because when leaven is introduced into the bread, it takes some time to activate inside of that bread. And leaven will go throughout the entire loaf. Levin doesn't stop at a third of the way and say, you know what, I'm a third of the way kind of leaven. You're going to have to get a two-thirder to get the rest of this loaf. No, it doesn't happen that way. Levin isn't smart enough to know that it should stop at 50. percent so that you know because you know diversity is very good in a loaf so we we don't we don't
Starting point is 00:18:54 have levin that is smart like that levin does what levin does levin will go after the whole loaf and and that's true in the kingdom of god is that leaven will leaven the entire loaf and the whole loaf would be ideally the world it would be the the world so leaven takes a bit of time to leaven the whole loaf and but there's also a negative aspect of levin both in the old testament and the new testament and i'd like to turn our attention to that just to make a few points now i'm going to ask you as i talk about levin for a moment here i'm going to ask you to open your heart to open up your heart to something new you say something new yes like new teaching no new uh new things about the faith no we don't touch any of that i'm talking about
Starting point is 00:19:47 something new in the way we bring people to Christ, bring people to the Eucharist. When it comes to figuring out how to proceed, are you just copying people? Or are you asking the Lord to give you new methods, new ardor in evangelization? More about that in a moment. But it's better to be effective in ministry than cute or catchy. Cute and catchy doesn't change the hearts of the people of this world. the good news changes hearts the gospel changes hearts the eucharist changes hearts and eyes are open not cute and catchy okay so remember what isaiah said in isaiah 43 18 and 19
Starting point is 00:20:30 isaiah said remember not the former things nor consider the things of old behold i am doing a new thing now it springs forth do you not perceive it i will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Now, I perceive it. I perceive that God is doing something new. And you know what it is? It's the Eucharist. We're in our Eucharistic revival. We're about to enter into an amazing event in Indianapolis. I can see it. God is doing something new. Do you behold it? Can you see it? I'm doing a new thing. It's going to spring forth. Do you perceive it? I'm going to make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. And it's going to all center around the Eucharist. I spoke about Levin and the Passover briefly in the past, but I'd like to take just a few more
Starting point is 00:21:27 minutes to add some detail here. When the children of Israel were ready to leave Egypt in the Great Passover, the subject of Levin came into question, okay? And specifically in the making of the bread. They were told to sacrifice the Passover lamb. They were to have this meal. And unleavened bread was required at that meal. In other words, no leaven in the meal. And here's how it goes. I'll read part of this from Exodus 12. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day, you shall put away leaven out of your houses. For if anyone eats what is leavened from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. On the first day you shall hold an holy assembly, and on the seventh day a holy assembly.
Starting point is 00:22:20 No work shall be done on those days, but what everyone must eat, that only may be prepared by you. And you shall observe the feast of unleavened bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt. Therefore, you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an ordinance forever. In the first month, on the 14th day of the month, that evening, you shall eat unleavened bread. And so until the 21st day of the month at evening, for seven days, no leavened bread shall be found in your houses. For if anyone eats, what is leavened, that person shall be cut off. Okay, so you shall not eat unleavened bread. In all your dwellings, you shall eat unleavened bread.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Now, you say, why? What's the deal? Now, people have surmised for years, you know, we talk about you're going on this Exodus. You're going to be free. So, you know what? God told them to make unleavened bread. Why? Because they don't have time to make the bread.
Starting point is 00:23:25 It's got to be unleavened bread. They don't have time to let it rise. And so he wants them to get out of Dodge quick. No. Not really. No, but there is a reason. There is a reason. Now, I'll go through this kind of quickly.
Starting point is 00:23:41 you because I have mentioned it before, but I think it's important to understand that in Egyptian culture, bread was holy. Bread was very, very special. And it was a staple of living, of life. And it is in most cultures, isn't it? But with the Egyptians, they had a very special relationship with bread. And it related to ISIS and Osiris. And they are called the Lady. and lord of green crops. They are brother and sister, but they are gods, a male god and a female god. Isis is the female. Osiris is her brother, the male god. And both are strongly connected with bread and the grain from which it is made. Now, she is Osiris, Isis rather, is the lady of bread and beer, the lady of green crops, the goddess of the fertility of the field and the lady of
Starting point is 00:24:40 abundance and by bread and beer the Egyptians meant more than just a sandwich and a drink the phrase meant every good thing like shalom Egyptians would even greet each other on the street by saying bread and beer thus wishing each other prosperity now Isis was considered the divine baker who did what she transformed raw grain into risen and nourishing bread there's um there's a what's called in the Egyptian culture, the book of coming forth by day. And the deceased person asks for a funeral meal of the cake that Isis baked in the presence of the great God. And the Egyptians were quite adept at using even molds to bake bread in a variety of shapes and forms. And the divine bread was modeled into the shapes in the pieces of the body of Osiris, ISIS brother.
Starting point is 00:25:40 The bread was made in his body shape and sent to the various cities in which Isis was said to have enshrined them. Now, Isis is called the Lady of Abundance who gives us the bread of earthly life, and she is the divine baker, who makes the magical bread and gives us eternal life. Now, when they bake the bread, they use magic. Hecca is the word that speaks of Egyptian magic. The deities of ancient Egypt used Hecca as one of the forces. to create the world. Magic was seen as a continuation of the creative process from the beginning.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Now, when they made that bread, the Egyptians, watch this now. Listen, they put leaven in it. And they waited patiently for 18 minutes. For what? For the bread to rise. The Hecca magic was inserted into the bread by the female. by the female goddess called Wara Takao, or Wajit, the goddess of magic. And the rising of the bread was a sacred time.
Starting point is 00:26:48 And when they ate the bread, they got Hecca. They got magic, which gave them control. Whereataka was usually in the form of a cobra. She was the foster mother of the divine kings of ancient Egypt. And she was the cobra in the royal crowns that you see, they're very popular. The bread was thought to rise because of the presence of the magic, which was absorbed by the person eating it. So you have this almost counterfeit to the Eucharist in that the divine heavenly baker bakes this in the shape of Osiris's body giving us eternal life when we eat it. And it took 18 minutes for that bread to rise.
Starting point is 00:27:35 this was so much a part of Israel's culture. They'd been there 400 years. Don't tell me they weren't interested in the ways of the Egyptians. It took 40 years to break them from these Egyptian cultural habits, you know. And so when it comes time for the Passover and they're going to make bread for the journey, naturally they would think of, well, we've got to insert the leaven because the Egyptians believe this is, you know, and so and so and so and so. And God is like, no, no. There will be no confusion here. There will be no room to give credit to ISIS or Osiris or anybody else. I will bring you out
Starting point is 00:28:20 of captivity on eagle's wings. It will be me, the Lord, no leaven. So that's why no leaven. Because God wants to demonstrate himself in such a way. Listen to this, in such a way. that he will get the credit, just like he defeated the magic of the Egyptians and those magicians who put on a show with the nine plagues. Now, in the New Testament, the Old Testament commandment regarding Levin was in the context of the Passover. We'll see here that the commandment continues onwards into the New Testament. And Paul said to the Corinthians, in 1 Corinthians 5, 6 and 7, he said, listen, and this is in the context of the Eucharist, which is the New Passover. He said, your boasting is not good.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump as you really are unleavened bread. For Christ, our pascal lamb has been sacrificed. So just like in the Old Testament, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb for freedom, they did not allow leaven. And Paul says, Jesus is the paschal lamb. and we want to be cleansed of the old leaven in our lives. Why? God gets the credit here.
Starting point is 00:29:41 God is the one that's going to lead us into freedom. Now, the idea here is that in modern times, when we want to accomplish God's works, we end up so many times imitating the world and adopt their ideas. And in the Passover in the Old Testament in Exodus 12, God said, no, no. holy distinct distinguished different we don't do it the way the world does it now don't get me wrong conferences are good and they can be used in marvelous ways and they will be this summer
Starting point is 00:30:13 but is that what god is calling all of us to do in order to accomplish what he has put in our heart no no cracks crevice get the gospel in that's not a conference you leave a conference to go and do that. Fundraiser? Study that looks like every other one. Again, nothing wrong, just a question. Rock concerts have been significant for the last 50 years. Smoke machines were introduced to provide atmosphere. So guess what? There are churches out there now that have worship services, smoke machines, lasers, strobes and all kinds of things. I can only surmise that worship is better with smoke machines and strobe lights, but I'm not sure. I mean, maybe God notices worship easier with smoke machines.
Starting point is 00:31:04 I don't know. I'm being facetious, but my point is true, and that is, are we copying the ways of the world or are we going to be distinct and do the work of the gospel in a way that God gets the credit? King Saul offered his equipment to David. Did David take it? No. He rejected it. For what?
Starting point is 00:31:23 For something that he was adept at, something that he was adept at, something that God gave him a skill at. And he killed the Philistine. To the onlookers, it was small and less lethal. But he got the job done. Now, my point is this. We have to come to terms with the message in the Bible that says, seek the Lord. This is what Isaiah said. Seek the Lord while he may be found. Call upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to the Lord so that he may have mercy on him and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts, God says, are not your thoughts. Neither are your ways, my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Pope John Paul the second asked us to employ new methods in ardor when it comes to the new evangelization. And that's what God is calling us to do. And let me end with this. A father Boniface Hicks, a friend of mine who was on the Bible timeline show just recently. He wrote about this. And just let me share this with you
Starting point is 00:32:38 as a way to conclude what we're talking about here, that God's calling us not to just go with what the Egyptians always did, but to go forward as holy people, depending totally on him with new methods, new ardor and new of going about what what god wants us to do not new ways in the sense that we have to just invent out of nothing something but new ways in that we have to the new way is doing what Jesus wants us to do the die to herself pick up the gospel pick up our cross go out there do exactly what he said that's radical that's extreme but that's what gets the job done Now listen to what Father Boniface Hicks said. It's beautifully said.
Starting point is 00:33:24 When Pope St. John Paul II asked for a new evangelization, he did not ask to change the content of evangelization, which is always Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Rather, he asked for an evangelization that is new in its ardor, methods, and expression. One reason for this newness is because the field of the new evangelization is primarily those who have already heard the gospel. sort of. Those who grew up Catholic and received a version of the gospel watered down with
Starting point is 00:33:58 secular culture, rejected what they thought was Christianity without really knowing the content of the faith. The full content of the faith must be presented in a new expression to avoid the defense. I've already heard that.
