Starting point is 00:00:39 Is it an opportunity to get curious? We're here, help people get to their health goals. One piece of time, we build and build and build. Resident Fashionista is back with us, Tanya Jelsomino. Hello, hi. Hi. How are you doing? I'm good.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Tanya's been through quite the journey with us. She's done the program before, lost quite a bit of weight, and then she just recently had baby number three. Mm-hmm, number three. How old is he now? He's seven and a half months. He's getting to be like a big little 20-pound chunker. He's a cutie, yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:22 He is a cutie, and you look fantastic. I feel fantastic, but I mean, you know why. It's all thanks to the living method. It keeps me in check, keeps me feeling good. And I mean, secrets, that's my secret. What do you call it? My secret, my words. It's like the tool in my back pocket, you know?
Starting point is 00:01:43 You got mom brain. You got mom brain. I got menopause brain. Yeah. It works. It works. Is everyone, I mean, listen, we don't want to put pressure on new moms to be losing weight after babies. We do not want that conversation to be that at all.
Starting point is 00:01:57 But have you been getting a lot of comments of people surprised by how fantastic you look? I mean, you always look good, though. I think that, I mean, people definitely noticed. I think, you know, you get that pep in your step back. And I think more than anything, it's not even, I'm very far from probably where I would like to be. But even currently, I feel so good. It's just, it's more so that I think the program really is giving me that energy that I need and just that motivation to get up, take care of myself and not let myself kind of fall backwards into a rut. And I think that's why for me, the program is really good.
Starting point is 00:02:33 I didn't even expect to lose as much as I did this round. I've been almost as successful as my very first round many, many years ago. So it's just been such a shift in my mental state. It's keeping me motivated through the winter, which I love. And it lets me show up for my kids, like in a positive way. And, you know, I'm feeding them better because I'm meeting better as well, right? So it's just, it's good for the whole family. I love that.
Starting point is 00:02:58 Well, I mean, one of the things I loved about you and Tonya is a co-founder or owned, She has a family business, Yaya, and co, which is a fabulous store, by the way. And everyone who works there is so great. We're going to get into fashion tips in a bit. But you had always gone online in social media and showed the clothes that you had coming in the store you do to this day. And even in a larger body, you look fantastic. Oh, my gosh, you looked so good. And you've kind of transitioned from being that person into the person that you are today.
Starting point is 00:03:30 How is your style changed along the way? because that's one of the things I find as we get older our style changes. You know, you go and lose 50, 60 pounds, even 20 pounds and do it in the way that we do it on the living method, which changes your confidence. It changes how connected you are to yourself. How do you, how do we do that? How do we navigate that? Well, I think that the most important thing that you said there is confidence.
Starting point is 00:03:58 A lot of people think shopping is just shopping. buying clothes is very superficial, but I think that it's a lot more than what people realize. I think that when we are wearing clothes, it's really setting you up for what kind of day you're going to have, whether that's going to be a small day, whether that's going to be a powerful day. It's taking the confidence in yourself and putting it on the outside. Clothes are just not something you put on. And I think when I was in a larger size, it was difficult for me behind the cameras to navigate what worked for me. but I changed my size a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:35 I over the years I yo-yoed so much that it was really difficult for me because I was kind of always navigating what should I wear now, how should I wear it. But I think that the key to that confidence was just taking a little bit extra time to really be thoughtful about what I was wearing. And I think that the shift in style really just comes through navigating, navigating life, navigating how I want to show up where I am. I mean, I'm a mom of three, but I'm going to continue taking care of myself. And I feel like taking that extra time in the morning just to be intentional with what I'm
Starting point is 00:05:12 wearing and how I'm dressing is going to really help me be successful throughout my entire day, how I show up for my kids. And one of the things I love right now is that trends are kind of casual, but elevated, which means that we can be comfortable. yet look really polished and really good. And so I'm really loving, I'm loving that because it's working for me right now. And I'm sure a lot of people,
Starting point is 00:05:38 especially those who are working from home or, you know, aren't looking to like, maybe they're not working downtown in a corporate office. They're loving that as well because it doesn't mean you can't look great. You just got to be a little bit and more intentional about how you're putting things together. Well, my whole style is what feels like with pajamas that I can wear in public. So I'm loving that. I'm all in for a casual style.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Something you just said there about confidence because it is about actually your clothes and your closet being too big for you. Or we all probably have clothes that are too small for us. Maybe we can go shopping in our own closets. But it is really about confidence. There's lots of women in larger bodies who wear, you know, who are into latest fashion, who wear revealing clothes look fantastic, look amazing. So it is really about what you feel most confident and comfortable in. And where do we go next with this conversation?
Starting point is 00:06:30 Let's say, you know, someone just lost weight or they're in the process of losing weight. Their clothes are starting to feel baggy on them, which they were excited about in the beginning. Now they're just kind of, you know, they just look baggy. Maybe they're afraid to invest in, you know, some pieces because they're not quite there yet. What's the you've been in this mindset? How do we navigate this? Well, I think even right now, I'm currently going through that where I'm going into my closet in the morning. and it's a hot mess.
Starting point is 00:06:58 And even me who works in retail, I think it's like, you know, the shoemaker always has broken shoes. My closet's a disaster. Like on the outside, I keep the store clean. I fold it, make sure every hangar's perfect. But once I get home, I'm a disaster. So one of the things that's on my bucket list is to kind of go through my closet.
Starting point is 00:07:15 And I think it's spring now. So we have this spring cleaning happening. And I think it's a great time of year to start there. Before you buy anything, before you get out there and get confused and, and it's time to first scale back and look at what you have in your closet. So my personal advice would be to really pull as much out of your closet as you can and just see what you have.
Starting point is 00:07:38 So the first thing, shop your closet, try things on. I know that it could be a little bit tedious. It might take time, but I think that that's going to be the key to success. You know, we have to really look at items that, you know, maybe are older that we haven't tried on in a long time. Maybe they don't serve us anymore. a lot of people, we talk about food scarcity when it comes to the downsizing week and people having food scarcity issues. It's the same thing with clothes. You could have scarcity issues. Like,
Starting point is 00:08:06 if I get rid of this one blouse from 1987, what if tomorrow I need it? Well, if you haven't needed it from 1987, what are the chances you're going to need it now? And then even if maybe you needed something like it now, would you still choose that same item? And if someone maybe we're going to gift it to you, let's say a girlfriend, hey, you want this top, I don't use it anymore, would you actually want it or would you pass on it? So I think we have to be a little bit more objective when it comes to shopping our closet, really see what are our items that we pick up every day? Like, what are those maybe 10 items that you're literally wearing on repeat? I know we all have our favorites, right? That can kind of give you an idea of what your actual style is. And then you can kind
Starting point is 00:08:51 build from there. And then I just found a great tip. And I think we talked about it before, like people afraid to let go of things. We talked about putting it in a box, maybe putting it in the basement or just putting it to the side. And I think that we have to have a definite yes pile, what we love. Yep. What's like a non-negotiable. Then there's a maybe pile. And then there's an absolute no pile. You start there. But the maybys, maybe it's not time to let them go yet. Maybe what we can do. is put them in a box, revisit those maybes in a few months, and have a look at them again with a clear mind, say, okay, did I actually miss this piece?
Starting point is 00:09:31 Or is it something actually I kind of want back in my closet? So that could be your in-between if you have a hard time letting go of things. And then once you kind of see what you have and maybe what you're missing, then you can go shopping. But what are we shopping for because we're losing weight? We don't want to spend money. things are expensive nowadays and not everybody feels so comfortable just getting a whole new wardrobe knowing they're still in transition. So this is what I would say to you. First of all, what's great
Starting point is 00:10:03 about the style right now is really it's all about classic basics. So a trouser, you can swap out your leggings for a nice trouser. That could be like a stretchy jogger trouser. I tried it on yesterday for those of you who followed me on socials. Super stretchy. It feels like track pants, but looks amazing. It could be a structured trouser, a great pair of jeans and maybe like a linen pant or like a white denim, something like that. So even though you are losing weight, I think if you start with maybe three really good staple bottoms, then you can build from there. Because I think no matter what size you are, you still have to feel good. So even though you're losing weight, I still think you need pieces that are going to show your figure and make you feel good
Starting point is 00:10:46 and be your staple because that's going to help you continue to lose weight and to continue to feel confident and feel good in your journey. And then you can add in some basic tops. But what doesn't have a size? Excessories. Yes. Okay. Yeah. So jewelry. Necklace. Statement necklaces are a big trend. Remember, we were all wearing those long necklaces like maybe, you know, 15 years ago that had like a big pendant on it or something like that. That's in now. So really nice statement necklace, a statement felt. Even printed scarves are in right now to tie on your purse, to tie around your waist or your neck. That's a great way to create interest, a beautiful structured bag or a fun shoe. So we can keep our basics on our body and then we can really be playful with trend accessorizing.
Starting point is 00:11:39 So that's going to be a way to still look trendy, still be current. But at the same time, you're not investing in very, very trendy pieces that you might grow out of and things like that. How do we know when it's our clothes that are not making us feel good versus us just like, like we go into our closet and we're just like, oh, this is just not. So I wore a shirt. So my style is changing. And I'm changing. I'm growing and I'm evolving. And so I've just kind of been in a super basic.
Starting point is 00:12:09 style style and I want to have a little bit more style and yesterday I pulled out an old shirt and I thought oh I used to love this shirt and I put on the print and whatever and then I sat here and I was like I fucking hate this shirt I just this is not me anymore and it's so interesting I said to tony he's like oh it's a different shirt I'm like yeah I'm so regret it I hate it like it was definitely the shirt and I don't know why so how do we know versus me just feeling grumpy or flumpy How do we know it's the clothes versus us just feeling ways about ourselves? Because I think that, first of all, when you're going into a very cluttered closet, already mentally, that's going to give us a block and that's going to create chaos.
Starting point is 00:12:52 So I think that's already building anxiety and confusion and frustration off the bat. So I think you want to start having a very clean, clean closet that's going to help you go in, clear-minded. Yes. Second of all, you can see when you feel sunk, when you put clothes on your body, there should be an instant shift. There should be a shift towards how you're standing, how you're feeling, your confidence. Clothes are going to make you, like, you could just the fabric, right? You put on a really cozy sweater, be like, oh, this is comfortable.
Starting point is 00:13:25 And you already know that you're not going to be thinking about your sweater all day because it's just cozy and comfortable. and it's going to allow you to be more focused in your day and focus on the things that matter rather than being, you know, twitching with your sweater or itching with your sweater all day or those jeans. You all know those jeans that you're putting on that you're going to button and you practically have to lie in your bed to get them buttoned up. You already know by the time you have your first snack and you finish that apple, they're going to be too tight and you're going to be a grumpy grass. So you already know when clothes go on your body that aha. moment if it feels good or doesn't feel good. And I would suggest if something doesn't feel good,
Starting point is 00:14:08 take it off, put it aside and find something that does because there's no worse thing than going about your day, fidgeting and fussing and feeling uninspired because all you can think about is being uncomfortable. So style doesn't have a size. Age doesn't have a limit. It doesn't have an age limit on it. So just because you're 55 doesn't mean you can't be trendy. Just because you're a size 16 doesn't mean you can't dress as beautifully or even better than someone who's a size three. It's all subjective and it's all what makes you confident. So I think you have to find that's a little bit of background research. You've got to really ask yourself, what makes you feel good? Is it a color? Is it a fabric? You know, what what is it that's going to
Starting point is 00:14:55 spark that inspiration for you? Because I really believe people say, well, why are you even talking about fashion. Like this is a weight loss program. Well, how we're dressing is going to set us up for the next steps of how we want to be perceived, how we're going to continue to be successful. Once I started feeling better and I was starting to lose weight this round, my clothing picks in my closet were a little bit different. I was trying to wear the biggest oversized things I could find and the leggings. And I'm like, okay, no, today we're going to shift to a pair of jeans and a little bit more of a slim or top. And it continued to build and build and build. And I'm feeling like as I'm feeling better, my outfit choices are actually improving as well because I'm taking more time to be
Starting point is 00:15:41 objective about what I'm wearing. Yeah. I mean, where does weight loss? Where does fashion fit into weight loss? I mean, I've sat in front of so many people who want to lose a fair amount of weight. And I say, okay, are you prepared for the new wardrobe? Some people need new shoes because when you lose weight in a healthy way, you lose it in layers. They need new shoes. wear bras, all of it. They're like, oh, I can't wait. And then when they get there, financially, that can be a lot. And then also, you've gone and changed who you are.
Starting point is 00:16:12 It's an identity crisis. You didn't just starve yourself to lose weight. You've gone through, work through issues, associations, beliefs. You know, how does a person dress when they don't believe they are worthy versus someone who realizes now they are worthy of everything that they want in life? Like there, this actually is a, it is a really big deal. It's about owning who you are as we transition members in maintenance, for example. There is a bit of an identity crisis there.
Starting point is 00:16:38 And it's about learning to trust themselves and owning who they are. And that's a big part of that. And that's like me. I just, I'm coming into this different space and my wardrobe is no longer reflective of that. And when I get dressed, I want to, like, it's just not matching. Yeah. So I don't know how to make it match. I want to ask you how to, how do we make it match?
Starting point is 00:16:58 What are the steps we go through? but I wanted to get this, you mentioned age. So here's Kathy, I'm 71, but don't feel I need or want to dress old. How do I dress appropriately, but still young at heart? That's a great question. Well, I think that like my own grandmother, she's 88. She is one of the most beautiful fashion forward people that I know. And she loves to shop and to buy something that makes her feel good.
Starting point is 00:17:23 And for me, that age is really just a number. Same with my own mother and myself. I feel when I see people that aren't taking that time, you don't have to be crazy. You don't have to wear brand names. You don't have to spend all the money. But it's just, again, being intentional. So you're 71. That's a great time in your life.
Starting point is 00:17:41 You know, maybe you have grandkids. You want to be the cool grandma. You know, your kids are out of the house. You're free. Maybe you're traveling more. You could be retired at this time. Maybe taking time to spend time with friends or taking on some hobbies. So how is it that you want to dress?
Starting point is 00:17:58 So one thing I mentioned there was the leggings. Like we got stuck in leggings and like a big top. So now we're kind of going on the reverse. And I think that it's almost even better for someone who's in their 70s or 60s. Because now we can have a little bit more of a structured bottom, something a little bit wider, a little bit more form fitting on the top. And a little belt, a nice jewelry, simple. You know, 71, you want to look classy.
Starting point is 00:18:23 You want to look expensive, elegance, right? And you can really do that with basic simple pieces. And what I would say, if you are on your weight loss journey, try to focus on more neutrals and things that can all mix and match with each other. So you want to have like a color palette. Maybe you want navy, white, beige, maybe a pop of red in there, gray. These are all going to mix and match together with those basics that we talked about. And you just literally switch up the top, switch up the bottom.
Starting point is 00:18:53 But on any given day, you're taking maybe 10 items and you're stretching it a month long. right? So invest in some very simple basic items and then some fun accessories. So maybe you've got some great jewelry that you've collected over the years. Vintage jewelry is really in right now, like antique pieces. You can throw that in for some interest. So I mean, I think the sky is really is really the limit. And being 71, I think it's a great time to, you know, shine in your life because it's a whole new chapter for you. And you've got a lot of freedoms that probably I don't have taking care of three wild little chickens. Well, fashion has changed.
Starting point is 00:19:34 I think, you know, our demographic, my demographic, we were so used to, like, the fashion industry dictating what we had to wear, right? Like, everyone wore acid wash jeans, skinny jeans, these jeans. Like, now kind of everything and anything goes. It's all about your own personal style. So I love that. I want to talk about going from a plus-style store. and the fashion types of clothes or the fit versus walking into a, I don't know, a more,
Starting point is 00:20:05 what do you call it? What do you call it? What do you call it? A regular store, a plus size store versus a, well, your plus size store would be a little bit more like specialty and then maybe like a generic store that has a variety of sizes, maybe not specializing in a plus size. So, yeah, shopping can be very intimidating. We could have a whole conversation about shopping and how to navigate it.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I just would say once you've done your closet edit, I think that once you know what you're looking for, you want to really just be open minded. Ask for help if you need help. Be open to trying new things. We've spoken in the past about taking chances, trying things you might not have. I know that someone mentioned about even jeans. I want to wear jeans, but I just shop at, they mentioned like winners or Costco. Well, as much as those might be budget-friendly places, I think. that when you're looking at something that's going to fit your new body, this is a new body.
Starting point is 00:21:03 This is like your new friend. You really have to give it a chance and get to know it. So what fits? What works? What feels good to you? You might assume something does, but until you really try it, you don't know. So I always say take a few sizes, start with some basics and then build. And don't be afraid to hate something. Don't be afraid to try. You might love it. And honestly, like if you're open and willing, the more information you are going to give an associate or a stylist in store, the more they can really help you because there's no one that knows the clothes better than them. And you're not the first customer. You're not even the 10th customer.
Starting point is 00:21:42 And someone probably has tried on those things that have had a similar body type to you, that they've already kind of done the hard work for you. And then, you know, now you can have a little bit of an easier job and they can have a process of elimination that will help you, not be so overwhelmed in the process. Yeah, I think also I'm so used to, like, I remember going shopping with my mom back in the day and salespeople were just trying to sell you anything. You definitely could not trust them.
Starting point is 00:22:09 And you went into a store trying not to get the salesperson attention because you just wanted to look and see. And then you'd feel pressured to buy something that you didn't actually want. And that's not the case anymore. I know you welcome people into the store. You're there to shop, which means try on if you don't like, you don't like it, you don't have to buy it, right? Like that's what might take you a bit of trial and error.
Starting point is 00:22:31 And a good salesperson will show you different types of things that maybe aren't your style for you to try on to kind of like, see, maybe they are and you just didn't know, right? So how should a salesperson, like what do we look for in a salesperson? We're walking in, because it's either we're online and we don't have a clue or we're walking into a store. Like, what's your standard of what a salesperson should be like and or the norm should be walking into a store. Maybe I need an outfit. I'm just, I'm not sure. I've lost some weight. Do I tell them I've lost some weight? And now I'm looking for some new clothes. Can you kind of guide us through
Starting point is 00:23:06 that a little bit? Because I'm nervous talking about it. I'm nervous talking about it. I don't want to do it. I don't do it. I know you're you don't like shopping, Gina, but it's okay. We've had some fun shopping before. So you know, it can be fun. It's just how how you go into the process. You have to be open-minded and you have to just take the guard down. Be objective. Treat it as a project. But I believe if you've newly lost weight and you have no absolute clue about what fits, what looks good, don't online shop right now. I think the first thing you need to go do is go into a mall. Let's kick it old school a little bit.
Starting point is 00:23:40 And I think that you need to really take the noise out of it. If you can tell the stylist what's going on, I just lost weight. This is my style, but I like to try something new. and you're willing to allow someone in, that's going to be your best bet. If you go up with all your walls, I mean, I've had a lot of clients that come in, they don't even want to look at me because they don't trust me. They don't know me. They don't know my intention.
Starting point is 00:24:08 And that's okay. It's my job to earn your trust. And my job to have. Yeah, exactly. With the hat on and on the phone pretending. Yeah. But it's okay. But that's okay because we don't know each other yet.
Starting point is 00:24:23 once we get to know each other and I really understand, it could be intimidating because we are self-conscious and we do have things that maybe we're looking in the mirror and we don't see what they see and we're not, our brain has not caught up to our body and we have a lot of body issues and we're dealing with them and that is okay. So take it slow. Maybe you can do it for 20 minutes one day. Maybe you just want to try a new trench coat. Maybe you want to just start with some shoes. Something easy. That's not objective. And you go from there and you build. But taking the time to dress yourself is just as important as losing the weight, learning how to listen to your body when it comes to eating and what you need and when. It's as important as your sleep. It's as important
Starting point is 00:25:14 as all the things that we've been learning in this program, how you are showing up, this is the next step. So if you're in the, I would just say this. If you're in the process of still losing a lot of weight, look for items that can kind of stretch with you, like a stretchier elastic waist. Smocking is really great. It's that very stretchy material knits, things like that. like this is very stretchy. I could wear it as a large and as a small and it'll kind of work with me. And then build with accessories for now. If you are done losing your weight, for those of you who are also in the maintenance program,
Starting point is 00:25:55 really think first how you want to present yourself to the world and where are you now? And, you know, who is this woman or man that is going to step out into the world? And how do you want people to see you? And that's a whole other conversation in itself. So I just think we have to really put the time in. into it. And before I said, like back in the day, many, many, many episodes ago, I said, get ready in 15 minutes out the door. But now I'm taking it back because now I've thought about it a little bit more. And I think if you can just allot 20 extra minutes to be intentional,
Starting point is 00:26:29 like putting a top and a jean on, that's just getting dressed. But if you can think of a necklace or a belt or shoe or a bag or a jacket, like that third piece to just add to your outfit. you can elevate it so much with something so small and just being a little bit more intentional is actually going to really give you that power for your day. Yeah, you know what I mean? Yeah, I do. And that's that you mentioned dopamine dressing. Yeah. So we're getting these dopamine hits when you think about eating food, when you're scrolling on your phone, when you're doing all this. And you should get it a bit of a dopamine. You should feel good about if you're about to walk out the door, that's very exciting for you.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Even if you're just going to a job or wherever you're going. and your clothing should kind of make you feel like, okay, and maybe how are you going to go for a walk with your girlfriend in your brand new athlete's set? Yeah. How is the pep it, how are you going to walk down the street when you meet at the corner? How is it when you have your brand new pair of sunglasses
Starting point is 00:27:31 or your new trench and you walk into that coffee shop, like posture good? And then how is it when they're looking to promote somebody at work? And you and your coworker both have this. same ability, fantastic at your job. You know it like the back of your hand, but you've cuffed your jeans today or you've kind of, you know, put up your sleeves and put a few little bracelets on and, you know, you're feeling good about yourself.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Yeah. Which person is going to spark interest to your bosses when they're looking to promote someone? They're going to promote someone who's going to uplift others because not only how you show up affects your confidence and how you feel and your energy, but how you show up is also going to affect everyone around you. And I think that that is seriously a secret weapon that people take for granted. Because when you're in a good mood, it's interesting how you attract others who are in a good mood back to you. And then the good mood is going to flow no matter what happens and who tries to knock you out in the day. It's almost like you got a shield of armor because
Starting point is 00:28:38 you have good feels happening and that's going to just be contagious. So those extra 20 minutes, they may seem so insignificant, but mark my words, how you dress your changing body and how you show up for yourself is going to be the first step to success long term when it comes to weight loss, when it comes to your job, when it comes to life in general, because it's all a trickle effect. I really truly believe that.
Starting point is 00:29:06 It's not about shopping. It's not about just retail therapy. Actually, it is. It is retail therapy. It's just how we're making ourselves feel good and how that's going to set us up for success. So it matters. It doesn't.
Starting point is 00:29:18 You know, something just click there where it's spending an extra 20 minutes kind of being in yourself. It's focusing on yourself and anything at self-care. And you don't have to, you know, break the bank to buy something new. Whether you shop at a fancy store or you buy your clothes second hand or consignment or you do swaps with friends, it's taking them. that time to care about you wearing something that makes you feel good. It's going to change the energy that you go out into the day with.
Starting point is 00:29:45 It's going to change the choices that you're making if you're in a more positive mindset versus a, I feel whatever. I feel gross. I might as well just eat it as opposed to, wow, I've taken the time to actually care about what I look like. I hear the music coming in. Oh, my goodness. We're in trouble.
Starting point is 00:30:00 We need help. We need so much help with this. What's your last words of advice before we go forth and shop or clean out our closets today? Have fun. Have fun. Make it fun. Celebrate yourself. Be so proud of you. If you are standing here today, you've almost finished the program. Starting point is 00:31:05 a bunch of questions just to get to know you a little bit better and we care you with someone that works with us that we think would really mesh with your personality and your needs so that they can help you in the best way or you know what maybe it's time after this convo text your girlfriend text your husband whoever you love spending time with go grab a coffee head to the mall and just you know what it's free just browse just browse and see if something sparks you joy and go from there. So it's not about spending a lot, but it's about making sure you do recognize that taking care of yourself is not just the inside. Sometimes the outside helps you continue the inside part too. So have fun with it. I love that. Or go make a date to shop, but make it promise you don't buy
