Starting point is 00:01:09 Welcome to Spell the Tea. The community is unbelievable. The way I feel about myself, my energy, my self. That is our special guest today for our Spill the Tea, our very first Spill the Tea segment of our winter program. She's the perfect guest. Talk about perseverance. Talk about working through all the things that you need to work through, all of the feels. Eight programs in, 165 pounds down. I know you want to hear from her because I'm so excited to talk to her. I have so many questions. I want to know how she keeps showing up, not just group over group, but day after day. I want to hear all about how, when her journey started, where she's at, where she's going. I want to hear all about how, when her journey started, where she's at,
Starting point is 00:02:05 where she's going. I want to get right into this conversation. So let me introduce to you, Sharon Burton Robb. Hello. Hello, hello, hello. I'm here. Nice to see you again. Nice to see you as well. It was such a pleasure. Last October was amazing. Yeah, I had an opportunity to meet Sharon and her friends at the Ork Living, the little conference that we did where so many Livy Losers came out. It was a whole vibe. It was a whole vibe. I didn't have an opportunity to talk too much to any one person because there were so many amazing people there.
Starting point is 00:03:02 But now I get a chance to talk to you. And I have been itching to have a conversation with you for a while now. Um, I mean, you've lost a whole person. Do you feel like you've lost a whole person? Like, like meaning you, like you look like a different person. Do you feel like a different person? I feel like a different person. Absolutely. Um, do I still think of it or believe it? No. Oh, crazy thought as that is. Um, I know from clothes sizes and looking at myself, the difference in changes, but it's hard to believe two and a half years ago where I was. Yeah. You know? Um, and now it's totally different lifestyle. It's totally changed, you know, more active, healthier, happier, calmer, more confident. Yeah. it's totally different. You let's talk about the difference between
Starting point is 00:04:08 because you have that typical story started dieting when you were young, you've done all the diets. What is the difference between the way you've lost weight before and now? Well, pretty much every other diet I've ever done was starve yourself and deprive yourself. Right. So it was never healthy. And I always lost, but then I always gained it back at some point. You know, I did lose 100 pounds at one time when I was in my early 20s. And I was able to keep that off
Starting point is 00:04:45 for quite a bit, but that was through working out at a gym two, three hours, five days a week, going for walks, five and 10 K. It was craziness. When I think back at it now, the amount of energy you put in to try to keep it. But as soon as you started stopping it and started eating properly, it slowly crept back up, you know, and that that's what happens. And then you gain more, which is even worse. So where are you at now? Where am I? Where, where am I now in your journey? So I, you know, I have you down 165 pounds. This is your eighth group, 41 pounds, 37 pounds, 34 pounds, 13.6, nine, 19.6, 18 pounds. Where are you now in your journey? So I haven't, I I've, I've lost the 165 and I've kind of stayed in there since group six. So group seven, I've kind of went up and down,
Starting point is 00:05:55 up and down all around. Um, but didn't go up high, but I did go up, but I fluctuate. I can fluctuate five to 10 pounds in a day. Yeah. I'm just one of those, one of those type of people as well that I'm very reactive with weight. So I don't panic like I used to, but I do fluctuate. But right now, I'm definitely kind of in that plateau mode. And I didn't have a lot of plateaus, like long plateaus as I was losing. So I know my body has to solidify at some point and had to have a point where it said, whoa, let's try and, you know, settle down and see where it is. And I think that's kind of where I was at. This group is more for me to see what my body's willing to do. Oh, I want to see if am I done? I would like to maybe if I had to look at weight as as a guide, I'd like to lose maybe another five. Because I'm happy with the clothes and everything I've got now, and I don't want to go out and buy any other new clothes because that's all I've done.
Starting point is 00:07:24 I spent a fortune on clothes, so I don't want to be going out and buy any other new clothes. Cause that's all I've done is spent a fortune on clothes. So I don't want to be going out and getting any more. But I don't want my clothes to be tight either, you know, and, and because unreactive on that scale, I want to have a little bit leeway. If that makes any sense total sense yeah and and i mean but we'll just see where my what my body wants to do can i lose weight absolutely do i or do i have more to lose absolutely because i'm a short little thing i'm only five two so i'm not a very tall person. So it definitely will have to wait and see. And my body will do what it's going to do. But I'm calm and happy where I am.
Starting point is 00:08:16 And for health reasons, my doctor has said, you don't need to do anymore. So that has taken another kind of weight off my shoulders because it's not like something I have to do. Whereas that's what I felt like I was having to do something like, you know, so. Yeah. I want to, I'm going to talk about, I do want to pick your brain and ask all sorts of questions. Like how do you stay motivated? How do do you do you still get frustrated but i want to talk about your doctor because you came into this the living method menopausal no gallbladder thyroid issues um gird blood sugars you went from pre-diabetic to normal range you know prior to the program you'd be sick all the time so you've you've you've made i mean what you've done is amazing tell me like what like, what did your doctor have to say?
Starting point is 00:09:06 You said that your doctor didn't even recognize you when you went in. She did not. It was quite comical. Because of COVID, you didn't see your doctor for quite a while. So I was just calling to say, okay, I'm on a new program. I've lost X number of pounds. Because of my thyroid, I knew I had to keep them informed. So I was getting blood work done after every group. Now, not a full panel of blood work, but the main ones. So I was constantly in contact. So, when I actually got to see my and then walked back because it was other people in the room.
Starting point is 00:10:11 So she didn't want to say too much, but she was she was shocked because it was my voice. She recognized not me as a person. Yeah. Also, during COVID, I gave up dying my my hair so my hair has changed everything had changed you know I was no longer wearing any types of makeup I was all natural is what it was is what you got so so therefore she was like shocked and she was a neighbor of mine. She lived in the same survey as me, but I didn't see her. But she lived in the same survey as I did in Dundas. And she just couldn't believe it. It was it was crazy. Oh, I love that. And that's, that's, that's vibes for sure. Oh, for sure. Yeah. So I got so many questions. Do you, do you get still,
Starting point is 00:11:09 because I want to tie it into where we're at in the program. Sure. And this is, you know, we're not in the messy middle yet and we're still having feels. Do you get still frustrated? Like you have crushed the program 165 pounds down. Like I do, I do get frustrated sometimes I get frustrated that, um, you know, you're putting still in the work, but you don't see it on that scale. It's not moving. I mean, I understand why. Yeah. And I totally know it's needed and my body's changing. Do you know what I mean? Like it looks like I've lost more, but I haven't. But do I get frustrated? For sure we do. Over a hunk of piece of metal, we all do, I think, to a certain point, right?
Starting point is 00:11:54 We base everything on numbers. And we forget the other things. We forget where we came from and where we're at and, and all the other non-scale victories we've had along the way, whether it's health, whether it's, you know, your measurements, whether it's whatever it is, whether your hair is nicer, like, you know, your skin blowing, whatever it happens to be. Yeah. Is, is a huge thing, right? like that is totally human nature i think yeah you know
Starting point is 00:12:30 you this is your eighth group so you see group over group right you see the same you know amazing faces coming back for another round i know you're such a big huge part of our community and many of them are saying such nice things about you um what, what about the new people that come in? Like if you, do you ever be like, Oh, I wish they just knew this. Like, what would your advice be to someone who's new? Trust yourself to trust the process and the program. Many want a quick fix. Many want to see results right away. It doesn't always work that way. Our mind is always three, four steps ahead of us.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Our bodies are like, whoa, whoa, whoa, give me a second. You're already throwing all this other stuff at me all of a sudden. And now you want to add in, you know, you want me to do something? Yeah, it is. yes it doesn't always do that it there the mind in in the body sometimes are not in line yeah with what we want unfortunately yeah you know, that's again, and not to dwell on the eight programs. What's your, how do you approach each new group? So I come into each group as if it's my first. Okay. You do. Okay. I do. I do. I treat it. I treat it like my first. So I come in. I mean, the only thing I can't change is certain things that I do naturally now, which is the mindfulness questions. I naturally do that. I can look at a plate and say, yeah, no,
Starting point is 00:14:32 I can't have all that. But, you know, I can basically estimate exactly what I can to feel satisfied will be. So I'm actually very good with that now with that mind body connection took a long, long time though. I will say that, but, um, it is definitely, um, for me coming in with fresh eyes because really I am coming in with fresh eyes because my body is in a different spot. My mind is in a different spot. You know, when I first started, it was, I had to find something. I had to figure out something. And if this didn't work, then what, what was my alternative? Surgery? Right? So now it's not that now now it's a totally different thing because now I'm happier content calm I just need to let my body do what my body wants to do now oh I love that you know it's totally different than when I first started I love that that. What was your, what was your why? Has your why changed
Starting point is 00:15:47 from when you first started to now? My main why never changed. My main why was, um, my mom passed at 58 and I didn't want to follow in her footsteps. I am 58 and I was like, no. And the way I was going, I would be heading that way because I was, I couldn't even breathe talking half the time. I couldn't have this conversation with you two and a half years ago. Not this much because I would be out of breath. You know, never mind walking. I mean, it was crazy. You know, it's it kind of blew my mind thinking I and that's kind of what motivated me, told me that that is I have to do something. You know, I want to be here for when my son gets married. I want to be here. If my son has children, I will, you know, as much as you can, you know, certain things are outside of your comfort zone and outside of everything, but you got to do what you got to do. But so I found, um, my why changed. Um, but because I
Starting point is 00:17:00 gave myself a different why that was my main why, but I gave myself a why in the sense of a goal why I was doing it. Like my first why was to sit in a patio chair when I went out for dinner with the girls, my friends, on a Friday night. We do that every Friday night, was to sit in a chair comfortably because I would be fiddling and farting around and moving and because I just was sore all the time I was just not comfortable so that was my big why for my first few groups actually wow but it does it changes everybody's why changes and that's what keeps me motivated.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Yeah. So. What's the biggest benefit from having lost 165 pounds? The biggest benefit is my health. Because, you know, my thyroid meds have gone. Sorry, we have a little friend. As soon as I start talking, he's got to come. And so, yeah, right. So, um, my biggest thing is, is my health. Um, my thyroid meds have come down five times. Um, my blood pressure was never super high. It was kind of within, it was kind of borderline for a long time, but that would have changed
Starting point is 00:18:31 drastically if I'd kept on the way I was going. And my, uh, blood work for my blood sugars was pre-diabetic. So now it's well below, like well norms um my thyroid meds as i said five times i'm at my lowest low of thyroid meds even the lower than when i started taking thyroid meds which is mind-blowing to me as well but it's kind of lower than that. You know, and my heart rate is great, resting heart rate, whereas before, you know, it was always racing all the time. I was a heart attack waiting to happen, basically, really. You know, when I think about it now, then, you know, then you add in the mask for bloody covid and everyone's looking at me going oh my god she's hyperventilating and she's red and sweating yeah you you knew you were in trouble
Starting point is 00:19:34 what's the biggest change you made what's the biggest change you've made throughout the this biggest change uh water i never drank water all i drank drank was pop. Even from a child, I drank regular pop. And then as I got older, it was diet Pepsi or Coke Zero. And that's all I had morning, noon, night, hot, cold, didn't matter what it was, I had it. That's all I would drink, which very rare did I have a tea, right? So water was a huge, huge introduction. And so was vegetables. I did not eat vegetables as a child or as even, even as an adult, my veggies were consisted of basically potatoes, corn, and carrots. A meat and potatoes family. Same.
Starting point is 00:20:26 It was very much a meat and potatoes family. We were, you know, I was born in Scotland, but came here when I was young. And we were very much a meat and potatoes. We just had, you know, steak pies, minced potatoes, you know, that was meals. Yeah. You know, that I lived on meat and carbs. I ate so much bread. What, what has been the hardest thing about doing the program? Hardest thing was probably putting myself first. That probably was my hardest thing to do was putting myself first and taking the time, the energy and commitment I knew it was going to need.
Starting point is 00:21:17 So I think to me, that was probably my hardest thing at first. And then of course the water because i didn't drink water i didn't like it uh when i tried other diets so it was always with you know uh you know crystal light or something flavorful to to make it enjoyable of some sort so if you're looking for flexible So. What matters is that you have something there to adapt with you, whether you need a challenge or rest. And Peloton has everything you need, whenever you need it. Find your push. Find your power. Peloton. Visit Peloton at onepeloton.ca. So going back to your childhood and having a weight issue and knowing where you are at now and everything you've been through, what would you tell your younger self? My younger self, I would probably, and it was hard because as a child, you don't have a lot of control.
Starting point is 00:22:42 And I didn't. I was always told to clear my plate. Um, and back then when I, we ate out a lot cause my mother worked till seven o'clock at night. So she didn't want to come home and eat and like cook a meal. So we ate out probably four times or more a week. Like it was crazy. So back then it was three course meals. You know, you, you had a salad or a soup and I wouldn't eat salad. Oh God, help me. Um, you know, I'd have soup, then I'd have my meal, then you'd have dessert. And when you think about it, it was like, who in their right mind would be able to eat all of that as a child but I did because I was told I had to because money you know we were going out
Starting point is 00:23:35 only for convenience but that didn't mean we had tons of money to do it we It was just eating, right? Or it was fast food. You know, we, we, we lived at Harvey's, you know, the burgers and fries all the time. So, so it was difficult. If I had to tell myself, I would love to have been able to speak up, to be able to say, no, I'm full. I can't eat anymore. You know, back then we didn't take doggy bags home. We didn't do that. That was not heard of. It was called a doggy bag for a reason because it was for the dog. It wasn't for us. So, you know, and we didn't have a dog at that time we didn't have an animal um so it was unheard of and my parents would go no you have to eat it we've paid for it it's food you have to eat that so if if i could that's probably one of my biggest things would be able to to speak up and have a voice
Starting point is 00:24:45 you know I didn't have one because back then you didn't talk back to your parents no you didn't you just did what you were told you know you didn't you didn't have kind of an you have um you have a you have a son now I do. And what does he think about all of this? So he's extremely proud of me because he's always known me as heavy his whole life. Yeah. And unfortunately, because my eating habits were not the best, neither were his. Since doing the program, he doesn't live with me that's the other thing he lives he has a house down in Thorold down in Niagara region and he now has been doing the program
Starting point is 00:25:36 through one of my books because I buy a book every single course. Well, because to me, it's a course, right? I'm coming in as if I've never done it before. And I want that there. And it's also something I can look back on and reflect on and go, look, this is what I've done just for myself because I'm a visual person. But back to Alex and back to him. And he has, he now weighs less than he did in high school. Oh, what? He went from a 2XL, XL down to a medium in men. Oh, he's 28. I know. Crazy. Like, it's just amazing how much influence someone has without even knowing they have it. Yeah. Right. So. Oh, wow. Yeah. I'm so happy for you. Oh, me as well. Right. For myself, but for my son as well. And my friends, I have a few friends too,
Starting point is 00:26:45 that are in the program and they've done very, very well. Uh, one of them has done amazing. Um, and, and it's all just, I started the program, not telling anybody. I didn't tell anybody that I, I started, uh, because the sense, oh, my God, here I go again. Here's another one. I'm going to fail. Here's another thing. And I just don't want I didn't want to bring it up to anybody because, as I said in my my bio, I'm a private person when it comes to personal things. I have a hard time kind of sharing things that way. So for me, it was like,
Starting point is 00:27:28 Oh God, I don't want, not that they would, they are so supportive and amazing. And I love them like sisters. Yeah. But, but I just wasn't, I, well, the other thing is I knew nothing about your program. Nothing. I joined having no clue what I was getting into. I just knew I had to do something. And it was recommended on a Facebook group I was in. And I went right to your website. I didn't read a lot. I just looked and went, okay, yep, joined. And that was in June, June 30th of 2021 and it didn't start till September
Starting point is 00:28:09 so I didn't look into anything I did nothing I came in with blind faith and went through and kind of just did now progress over perfection oh Absolutely. Because I don't know how many things I probably messed up on. But you know what? I learned. Right? I was learning as I possibly could and trying to implement as much as I could with not a lot of understanding. Wow. The first group I had not a lot of understanding. I just, I just did what I was asked to do. Are you still learning? Absolutely. It's hilarious because you kind of like your guest speakers, man, bar none, they are just amazing.
Starting point is 00:29:11 And you learn so much valuable information from them and you have so many takeaways from them. And Dr. Beverly, for me me was a missing piece. I didn't even know I was missing. Yeah. You know, she came in on my sixth group and she was the piece that I needed to get myself to the point now that I'm where I am. I believe in myself. I believe right. That I can, I can maintain. I believe I can do this. I've been doing the maintaining now since the end of, you know, since July, since the end of that group sex. So I know even when I let the bits and bytes in and the scale
Starting point is 00:30:02 goes up, I know that I'm going to be able to make it back down because I've done it. Yeah. It's there. I've got proof. I've got the data. I've got everything there. So you do. I do. That is the belief in that you can do that. I mean, you've crushed it clearly. Your favorite week of the program. What's your favorite week of the program? So that changed too. So it did. So my favorite week originally, probably for the first three groups, was week four.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Was downsizing. And week four and six. Because they're very similar. But your first group around, it's not because the first time around you're practicing and not. I really messed it up. Right. I would just take my portion and I would I wouldn't understand. The you know, the mind body connection at all. So I would literally take the portion I had and leave two or three bites. That's all I did. And I did that probably for the first few programs,
Starting point is 00:31:12 because I just hadn't quite got that there, you know, that wasn't solidifying in my mind. But that was my favorite, because it was the most like a diet, the one that I was most used to. It's familiar, right? Very familiar. Right. And it brought up a lot of the same fields, which at the time I wasn't sure how to handle those.
Starting point is 00:31:39 But anytime you're struggling, that's when you need to turn up volume on that. You've got to be able to try to dig in and find out the root cause of what's causing that. Why is that happening? And I think that is one of the hardest things for people to do. Because it feels, right? It feels. And feels are hard. I'm so happy that you're sharing this because it does take time to reconnect and be in tune.
Starting point is 00:32:15 And, you know, it's not just like, okay, it just comes to you. It's takes a lot of practice to be in tune. You're working through a lot of things, issues, associations, habits, triggers, feels, beliefs, all of that to do that. So I love that you're normalizing that it takes time. What is your, what's your least favorite week? I don't really have one. Funny. No, no, I don't really have one. Uh, you know, do some weeks more frustrating than others? Absolutely. You know, week seven and eight, for sure. But that also is one of the crucial two weeks because you realize how much your body doesn't need. Yes. To be satisfied. Yeah. And healthy. just, you don't realize how much we're still eating. Yeah. That's where we start splitting up the meals and snacks because you have to eat. And
Starting point is 00:33:13 it's really interesting your mindset when you're trying not to eat versus when you have to eat, that really creates this space for you to bring awareness to what you're, what you don't need. Um, man, I wish we could talk to you forever. What are your, what are your top tips for being successful? Okay. So my top tips, let me look, hold on. I wrote some things down. Okay. So let's see. Okay. So, so I do have, um, you know, a few tips for even just downsizing. So because we're into that week. So make things that can be used as leftovers. And there's not, you're not going to get all the feels at once when you have to either put it away in the fridge or the garbage.
Starting point is 00:34:12 Right. So if you do leftovers, that helps. I had mentioned already about when you're struggling, turn that volume up because this is the week that you will do some struggling. Not everyone, but that was when I started doing some struggling because the feels really started coming in for me. So I was struggling more this week. And then the other thing is just in general, it's progress over perfection. Yeah. It is not an all or nothing. You know, I was always one that was, I like being rigid.
Starting point is 00:34:55 And if you gave me that inch, I took the mile. So that was hard for me also to kind of get my head wrapped around. If I wasn't perfect, then why am I doing it? Not doing it. Like, why would I bother? But it is such huge progress. And every week adds on to each week. So those two and a half years, the two and a half years goes by real quick. You know what? It does. And you don't realize it. Well, even look at now. We're into February.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Where has 2024 already started going? Yeah. Right? We're already past. I mean, we're over halfway through winter. Not that I'm complaining. Sorry for anybody who likes to ski. But you know what I mean? I'm complaining, sorry for anybody who likes to ski, but, but you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:35:47 It's like, time is going to go by anyway. Yeah. We, you know, do something productive for yourself. We are worth it. Oh, I love that. And I love you. And I know our community loves you too. You are such a huge part of our community. I know you have so many fans supporting you've built is absolutely amazing. The cheerleading, the support, the good, the bad, the ugly, everything. They're there. It's almost like having 30,000 friends. Like, it's almost like, you know what I mean? It's like having that many. When I started the program, I knew nobody. My friends that my my personal friends from from years didn't start till January. But I forged friendships and, you know, talking back and forth with others within the group.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Yeah. Like, it's just amazing. And I thank them for all their help and all their support. Because I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all of them as well. You're the staple. And you're always on my shoulder saying, oh, you can do it. Yes, keep going. Yes, you got it.
Starting point is 00:37:29 You're always there. But it's that community feel that I think some people miss being part of just like the podcast or through, you know, just doing the app and not watching videos and things of that nature. Unfortunately, they're missing out on such a big part of the program. Yeah, I think so, too, because we have the best community. But it is more than just my amazing team. It is people like you who take the time to not only share, but support. I know you were a little nervous. Your bio was written beautifully. It was, it was honestly such an amazing share. And if people haven't had an
Starting point is 00:38:15 opportunity to read it, I highly do. Um, I just want to read a couple of comments here. Um, this interview is really helpful. I appreciate how real you are being about your journey. I'm also very private about this. I don't share my success because I'm not comfortable. This community is helping me get past myself. Um, Sharon, you are, you are a rockstar, awesome job. And you know, thanks to me for bringing you on, but I knew she was going to be in this thing. Um, you are, you are amazing rockstar and such a cheerleader yourself. Thank you for that. And thank you for today. Honestly, I just, um, I'm so grateful that you took the time. I'm almost, I'm feeling a little,
Starting point is 00:38:55 don't think that I'll start because I've already got it. I'm feeling a little teary because this is just, it's so hopeful for people, you know, and I think that it's going to resonate with so many people, what you've done. And it's just exactly why I do what I do. And it's just, I just can't just tell you how grateful I am that you chose my program and you freaking crushed it. And the fact that you not only share on a regular basis with our community, but that you've taken the time to share today. And I truly believe that the right thing said at the right time can be a game changer for someone. It can make all the difference from them, you know, stopping today
Starting point is 00:39:41 and following through and being a huge success like you. So I just want to say, um, I adore you and just thank you so much for joining me today. Thank you. Thank you. If I could reach just one person, that's all. That's the reason I did this. Yeah. For me to reach just one person, to be able to give them hope, you know, as, as I always say, nothing is impossible when the word itself says I'm possible. So let's go do it. We can all on that note, Sharon Burton, Rob drop the mic. Thank you so much for joining me today. Thank you. Thank you so much. I am very humbled and, and grateful for everything. I adore you. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:40:26 Thank you so much. Oh my gosh. Okay, come on. I knew she was going to be amazing because she is amazing. Like I said, I had the opportunity. Her whole just personality was shining through when I met her back in October.
Starting point is 00:40:41 I hope that you find hope. I know some of you are here and you have some big numbers and it can just seem really daunting. I know some of you are here who may not have a lot of weight to lose, but you're working through a lot of stuff. And I just hope Sharon is a testament that if you just keep showing up, honestly, you can't mess it up. We are going to hear from more of our amazing members over the next few weeks. That's what these spill the tea conversations are about. They're very real people on very real journeys and not everyone we highlight just like snap their fingers and lost their weight. In fact, I don't think we've ever interviewed anyone who that's been their story. Um, we're, we have a lot more to cover, uh,

And like Sharon mentioned, you're going to have another opportunity to do it again in week six. So I know we're midweek, but I highly suggest if you're having any issues, concerns, you've got questions about the tweak, definitely join us tomorrow. And if you can't join us live, of course, we always repost that in the set in the guides, just like this segment. You can also download and listen again. If you have any friends thinking about doing the program, you can share that podcast with them the videos you can outside of the group, but the podcast you can. I would love to talk to her forever. I'm I'll have her back on. She doesn't know yet, but I'll talk to her behind the scenes. Have an amazing rest of
