I'm going to be honest with you, this podcast is unapologetically a hot mess because that is what midlife feels like sometimes.
Why, though?
And how do we make it better?
Do we all just need facelifts and g-lp-1s?
I mean, let's talk about it.
No bullshit, no wellness wankery here because we're trying to make real change and change is hard.
But we're in this together.
Welcome to the Livy Method podcast.
I guess today lives by the slogan motto.
I don't know what you mantra, whatever.
you call it by women for women supporting women. Like I'm all about this. This is where the best of them
live. Maria Locker is joining me today. So Maria is not only the founder and the CEO of Revolution
Her, which is this incredible store that uplifts and supports women entrepreneurs and all
their incredible products. She's also a member. She's also a member. Hi. Hi. How are you?
Where's your partner in crime?
Grace today.
What's she, she vacationing?
She's in England.
She's back home visiting family.
So she's going to be very excited to hear how everything goes and all the secrets we spill.
Yeah, but she's watching from afar.
Yeah, well, and she's no longer a member because she has reached her goal.
She's been maintaining her weight, but she's definitely part of our community.
I was thinking about what do I want to talk with you about today.
There's so many things.
We want to introduce all the fun things that we're going to be doing and including
maybe a getaway that we're doing and a conference that we're working on.
But I got thinking about community because there's a lot of talk about community.
And that's one of the things that I'm focused on this year because we have like,
you must feel the same about your community.
The community on the planet.
I do.
I love my community.
But let me tell you, your community is like nothing I've ever seen.
I've had my community a really long time.
It's been like 16 years.
But when I meet your community, and I want to say I'm part of that community,
because I have. I've been doing it like about a year. I've been in the group.
Your community is insane. They're amazing. Like,
Libby losers are like nothing I've ever seen. Yeah. Yeah, why do you think that is?
Like from being part of our community and having your own because I've been thinking about it a lot lately as people talk about building communities.
And ours is one that just was created organically. From my perspective, just want to create a place and space.
I think that life is hard enough, right? And when you're trying to do something like make change in your life,
like reach your weight loss goals or do it in a way that it actually leaves you healthier, like doing it the right way, the hard way,
you want to have a safe place to do that. And the internet is just, I call it the interweb,
it's just like a cesspool of negativity and judgment. And I think it's only getting worse. But if you ask me how I did it,
I can only tell you my intention. Yeah. And I think that's,
probably where it starts because your intention was pure. I want a safe space. There is no judgment.
And I think you make it really safe for people to feel like, you know, you can draw enough
thumb, you can do all these things. And it makes it really easy for other people to feel like,
I don't have to put a mask on. I don't have to pretend everything's okay. I really think that's
at the heart of why your community feels so incredible. Everyone just feels like they can do what they
need to do. They don't have to hide anymore. Oh, I should preface this with. I get really,
like, teary. I didn't prep with any tissues beside me. Shit. So I might just be a hot mess.
That's okay. Anyways, you have an amazing penis.
Listen, I've cried in front. I've, I've cried on here so many times, honestly. I think it is, I think
when, do you think it's a midlife thing? I think you just get, you're really grateful for the things that, you know,
the good things in your life and when you connect with great people or, you know, for you,
like you must be connecting with all sorts of incredible women with incredible stories.
Like, I think there's, I think that is a mo, I think with where we're at, that is emotional.
Yeah, I think, I don't know if it's a midlife thing because, I mean, I started the company when I was
30, 31, my company.
And so I guess it could be midlife or some, but I think, honestly, it's finding.
a common ground with other people who are in the same space as you, same kind of mindset,
they're working towards something the same as you.
So in my community, for example, or our community with mine and grace, we started as a community
for mom entrepreneurs and grew from there.
So you start with a foundation, right?
And in your community, everyone's got the same foundation of wanting to feel better in their
own skin, wanting to live better. You know, I remember reaching out to your team, you and your team,
like two years ago when I had just found out, I had diverticulitis. I was like, I want to do the
program. I have no idea. I was struggling. I was barely eating anything. And I remember your team was
amazing and said, like, just come in the group. Don't start. Just come in the group and just see what
other people say. And so when you kind of have that common foundation, it allows
growth in any way that you need it. I think that's really where it's the strongest. Yeah. And so for us,
Revolution Her is all about, you know, women supporting women. Like you said, that's our tagline.
It's buy women's normal. Yeah. So you have your store. And it is all, first of all, I can't believe I,
like, I remember going, you had invited me and we connected and we were going to do a pop-up. I was like,
I want a place to bring women together. That's inclusive, too, right? And, and, you know, and,
And that's hard to do with stores.
And I remember I brought my mom and it was in the Vaughn location.
A pop-up in Vaugh.
The pop-up that you did.
And I was like, wow, how do I?
Because I'm not a big fan of shopping in the mall, to be honest.
I just stick to my same old stores.
I need to step out of my comfort zone.
And you carry everything, not just like clothing, clothing, but all sorts of like books and jewelry and products.
And where did that, like, love of that come from?
Because everything in your store is amazing.
So I have a, okay.
Because you can tell you're not just taking in anything in everything.
No, we're not.
Okay, I come from a retail background with my family.
So we have a bakery, which makes it really hard to be on your program sometimes.
I'm just going to say.
But I come from a family that owns its own business as well in marketing.
And like, I can remember, aside from being three years old standing on a milk crate, learning how to use the cash, maybe four.
Three is like prodigy, maybe four or five.
My mom and I would do the displays.
She kind of taught me how to do the merchandising and I would go to the gift show with her and I would see all these new companies.
And she'd be like, what do you think?
Does this look cute?
And so I really kind of always had that in my blood.
I also was a school teacher.
And so I really love, literally, Gina, I've done like a whole other episode.
But yeah, I love teaching people as well.
Like I just, I innately love to tell people's stories and to share what I know and, you know, try to kind of, not influence, but help them see that their actual buying, purchasing, their dollars can make a difference.
And so with Revolution Her, it's really been about why aren't we thinking about what we're buying?
The fact that, you know, we're part of this collective of women, you know, when you come in and you see something, not only is it designed by a woman, it fits well if it's clothing.
Our sizes range triple extra small to four extra large.
So it's like, you know, you're not put into this box.
We have a lot of one size fit that actually fits.
pretty much everybody like you know we really just thought what do we want to see i'm not a big
shopper either i honestly am not and it seems really weird that i would have a retail store and i'm
not a shopper but i don't love the feeling i get when i try and close in other places i don't love
feeling like i'm just picking something up that everybody else is going to have and that's really
what we wanted to stray away from with our store i love that yeah i feel like um this is
a year for a lot of women, including myself, of like the pivot. I don't know if that word is like,
if it's the right word. It's always the right word. Yeah. I feel like we're constantly or maybe,
you know, just with where I'm at trying to figure out, okay, so I've spent, you know, time in my life
doing this and now maybe my kids are out of the house or maybe feels relationships are changing
or they're recognizing their life maybe is like they're not where they want to be. What is like one of the
one of the hardest things that you struggle with every day. You have a fantastic job, life is good,
but what's the hard thing that you struggle with every day? For me, it's a feeling like I
represent what I'm doing well, whatever it is that I'm doing. So I am going through a pivot
right now. My son's going into third year university and my daughter is leaving for first year.
So we are going to be empty nesters in about nine days.
Not ready for that.
They come back, trust me.
They come back.
I know they're going to have to.
I know, but it's true, right?
And my husband said this too.
Like, they're going to come back.
Probably going to come back and maybe live with us for a while.
But it's what it represents, right?
It's the shift.
Yeah.
And for a long time, I kind of lost, like, you know, I was always kind of like the girl who loved vintage clothes and, you know, would kind of, I have very curly hair.
You would never really know it.
And so I feel like for me, I'm always trying to represent in the best way.
So when I'm a mom, am I really like, am I focused?
Are my tablets and my everything away?
Am I focused on what my kids are saying?
When I'm at work, I feel like for a long time I was super casual.
We actually just worked with a stylist, both Grace and I, to kind of like rediscover how close fit.
And actually, I lost like 16 pounds this last program.
And so that was, oh my gosh, nothing fits properly.
16 pounds is like, I didn't think it was a big deal, but it was a big deal.
So, yeah.
I just, yeah.
And it's not, it's not to 16 pounds.
It's like, you know how hard it is to make change, right?
And with everything that you got going on in your life, I went into my closet today.
And I was just like, oh.
Like I just, and it's not about not having nice clothes.
It's about a feel like I'm changing so much.
Like I just, I don't know.
I want to have more fun with it or I just want to be inspired or I just want to like,
you know, I don't know.
I don't know what it is.
How do you stay inspired?
Honestly, I'm constantly surrounded by amazing women.
I, there is something.
I don't know.
It fills my cup every time.
As soon as I walk in the doors of the store, I do a lot of like podcasts and things,
you know, events that we go to, I'm always surrounded by amazing women.
But just on my own, like today, I just got back from vacation.
How did I like, I didn't want to go back to work literally 12 hours after I got off a plane.
I just, I love what I do.
And I really do.
I think Grace would say the same if she was on the show too.
We just both absolutely love our jobs.
And so for me, I'm inspired just to kind of keep doing the work, which is telling people about these amazing women.
You know, with Revolution Her, we have a magazine and we have a podcast and we do events, which we're going to talk about.
And the store is just kind of one piece of it where I actually get to talk to the public.
I get to look someone in the eye and say, you know, when women come in, they say the exact same thing you do.
I just, I look at my closet and I feel like I'm just so uninspired and I'm miserable and my skin is getting crepey and I don't know what's happening.
I'm getting older.
And it just feels like a safe space where you can say those things and try something new.
Well, that beauty by bees.
Oh, come on.
Beauty by bees.
Talk about creepy skin.
My mom also picked some up, right?
So I was talking about it randomly.
I was doing one of my workouts, which I'm going to get back to do next week.
And I tried it, and I got mine from Revolution to Her.
My mom picked it up.
So there we go.
We just went on this big family trip to Europe, and both of us packed our big jug of it.
It's so ridiculous.
But that actually, I will say, inspires me because I'm like, I'm like, I'm going to have to shower every day.
I like crave my shower now so that I can smell like sweet vanilla beauty for me.
I don't.
Yeah.
And if you, if you picked up a bottle of it, it was the serum, the vanilla serum.
You have to put it on after the shower is a game changer.
Like I'm always putting it on like my elbows and my arms without showering.
But after the shower is the game changer.
I, um, so I sort of like grew up in the television world.
I was never a cool person.
Like never, ever, ever a cool person.
You're kind of cool.
Well, I'm learning to embrace kind of like fake it until you make it coolness.
But only because I get to meet amazing, super cool people like you.
And I was never, like I never had the cool clothes.
Like I remember when I was in high school, right?
I was working, whatever.
My mom took me to like Northern Reflections.
And that year everyone showed up in acid wash jeans, right?
Like I just always missed it.
And I was just like, and it's just not my thing.
Fashionism is definitely not my thing.
But when I got into television, I was working on breakfast television, hosting my own show,
people would, like, I'd have access to cool products.
People would send things in or I had some cool friends that worked in the entertainment industry.
And I'd be like, oh, what are you using?
And all this or that or whatever.
I remember thinking, like, when you found something great, it was like you felt like you were the coolest person,
especially if it's a product that you love.
And that's how I kind of feel with like your store, everything in it is, is like, cool.
can I just tell you I am down to two elastic bands? Oh, you said it was going to happen. You did. You said,
you were like, that's it. These aren't going to let. I'll send you more. That's it. I, so these are not
bracelets. They're elastic bands. And I'm always losing. And I also have, you know, I'm three girls. So they're always gone missing.
And I'm always like, where? So I always forget that trapes these through Europe. I love them there.
But, okay, let's talk about other women.
You've met all sorts of incredible women.
Authors of books, creators of products, business women.
What's the conversation with women these days?
Oh, my.
Yeah.
Like, what's the conversation?
So, I mean, we're mostly talking to people when they, like talking to women when they come in the store.
And I will say a lot of men come in the store too, which is what we want.
We want men to come in and hear the best thing is when men come in and say, my wife loves this
store.
I don't care what you want to choose for her.
She needs something from the store.
She loves being in here.
But women when they come in, the big thing we hear is just nothing fits me.
I don't love shopping.
Everywhere I go, a small is cropped.
Like why do they think that women over 40, 50, 60, 30, why is every.
a crumb. It's not working for me. And so, you know, and I'm often like, I know I'm with you. It's,
the conversation is always around like, why are things not made to work for me? Is it me? I need to
lose weight. I need to change. Like, I don't want my arms to be showing. Arms are a big thing for a lot of
women. And for me, it's, you know, and my staff, they're all amazing because we're all in the same boat.
We all say the same things.
You know, we love being able to kind of guide women to feel better, choose self-care items, you know, when they're choosing clothing.
How many different ways can you wear this?
You want something that's going to make you feel good and look good.
We do have women that come back about a week later and say, yeah, I love this, but my husband hates it.
So I have to bring it back.
That drives me insane.
It happens so much.
It's like it's like a knife through my mind.
heart sometimes because when you walk out the store and you love something, it's like torture for
someone else to change your mind about it. Well, what do you think that's about? Because this is about
kind of finding that like new, like my hair. I used to change my hair all the time. I mean,
you wouldn't be able to tell, but I got some red in and I'm going to go more red. I'm ready for
a change. We're supposed to change and evolve as we go. And whether it's your spouse or a friend or
someone like I was just thinking about this. I had a friend where I had dyed my hair and she was like,
oh, no, it's not whatever. And then I like chopped it off. Mind you, I love my short hair.
It's so weird you mentioned that. And I was like, why did I do that? Why did I let somebody
tell me? And I don't think her intentions were definitely not like, no, they were, she just didn't
like it. I liked it. She didn't like it. And then I changed it.
gosh, what do you think we do that?
I think it's just innate people pleasing, right?
It's just such an easy way when someone else says they don't like something that you do.
You have to really love something to not let somebody else's opinion change yours.
When it comes to clothing at least or a hairstyle, makeup, right?
Something that you love, you got to go with it.
I don't know.
I feel like, I mean, I'm a self-processed. I am a people-pleaser. I know I am. I always have been. I'm like in the middle child. I'm like the peacemaker. I know I've read all the things. It's just, it's really hard and you have to kind of stick to it. So being able to find something you love in the first place is so hard. It's so hard. And that is also, I've been doing a lot of like grounding work, like a lot of meditation and grounding, trying to get back to just trying to.
I've tried to be a lot of things for a lot of people.
And you get spread really thin.
You get a little lost.
Intentionally doing that.
And that's where you have to trust your intuition.
That's what the program does.
Like, you constantly focusing on what to eat and when, drink your water,
your sleep, moving your body.
What that does is it makes you stay focused on yourself.
It does.
And when you stay focused on yourself, it puts you in tune with yourself.
Not just when do you, how much do you, but across the board, what works for you.
If you're hanging around people who just, you don't want to hang around them, but they're like long friends.
So you should.
That's probably a sign.
If you're going to your closet and you put something on that you really don't love, and listen, I know money can be an issue for some people.
So I'm not just like go buy new clothes.
But maybe it's just not you anymore.
It's not about the clothes.
It's so much bigger than that.
And that's one of the reasons that I want to have you on, I wanted to have you on the podcast because you spend so much time around women.
And yes, we're here to focus on losing weight and maintaining your weight.
there's so much more that goes into that. It's recognizing where you're at, what you need in your
life. And I think hearing from other women and where they're at and some of the struggles that
they have, I think that can be, I can, I think that can be a massive game changer.
It is. I mean, we've had, there's one of our brands, I'll just tell you, like, Ashley from
Smash and Tess has been with us, oh my gosh, from the very beginning. If you've never heard of
smash and test, rompers, really fun, comfy.
She has Crohn's disease.
And so, you know, every time we tell someone they come in and they're like, I'm looking
for something, I just, I get bloated, I'm never comfortable.
That's where we go, because I can share with them.
Listen, I have dieticitis.
When I go out to eat, I have to be so careful, I will blow it up in like a matter,
maybe TMI, but like literally, it will take me 10.
minutes sometimes. And so to find a piece of clothing that you can put a blazer on top of,
if you see me at a conference or you see me at, like I'm speaking on a stage, I'm usually
wearing a smash and tass romper with a blazer and a pair of kick-ass heels. And I feel amazing.
And no one knows that I'm comfortable underneath. So there's ways to get there for sure.
Well, I see a couple people talking about I get depressed when I try on clothes in the store.
And like, I think it's not about, that's the thing, like, I get depressed when I try on clothes.
Anyone can say that.
Yeah.
Like, I can be depressed when I try on clothes in a store.
And I think, you know, I look great.
But it's, are you trying on the right clothes?
Are you just in a having identity crisis?
Or you just, do you know what I mean?
I think it's bigger than that.
I think that's that message if you go into the store and you're getting depressed.
Because you're really, we're all trying to love ourselves exactly the way we are.
You're allowed to change with that.
But if I wore something that I was comfortable that I loved, because sometimes
the styles just don't fit.
Like you said, you're going into the store.
You've got to find something.
But all they got is crop tops.
That's fucking depressing.
Well, like pants, you know, from a small to an extra large or double extra large.
And then you've got the numbers to, like, I have no idea what number of pant I am.
I have no clue.
I've never been like a, I've never owned a pair of jeans until literally.
two months ago.
I just, I hate hard pants.
I don't, I'm like, I pants.
And no, I'm always like, if I can get away with pulling something on, I'm not, I'm serious.
I do not fair.
Hard pants.
I just bought jeans.
Well, I just think, I don't even like the idea of pants, but I'm wearing my jeans.
But I have like the same jeans, these jeans that I have on right now, they're those
stretchy ones that fit like two different sizes.
Like, like, I have, like, if they fit like, they fit like.
four sizes because they stretch and I have them in three sizes just in case. See, maybe that's just
what I've been needing. See, we don't, because we're, okay, I love what we do. Obviously,
we only sell things from Canadian women-led brands. We have a couple from the U.S. too,
but it's a very focused niche. And so it's really hard actually to find denim. Just saying from
a women-led brand. So that's the only thing. Sometimes.
we're stuck with what we can offer because we really want to focus on the fact that they're
Canadian women-led companies. But there are so many amazing brands out there. And actually,
we hear from customers all the time. Why aren't you carrying beauty from bees was one of them.
Why don't you have this on your shelves? Can you bring it in? So if there's ever something that
people want, like if your community is like, we hear so many ideas and options. I love that I get to
curate the collection. So if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. Please. I love the conversation in the
comments talking about hard pants. See, I'm not alone. I'm not alone. I can't be. I can't be alone.
Okay. I do want to talk to you before we go. Thank you for coming on and joining me this morning.
Yeah. Like said, Maria, does have her store, Revolution Her Wheel, put up the website where you can
find her store. She also has a magazine that she puts out. She also has a podcast.
You can find all that information at revolution her.com.
She also does live shopping.
So I'm going to come on.
Listen, I, like, so I was a sportscaster.
I did the weather, a sportscaster, and I've always wanted to do live shopping.
And so we were talking, I was talking to Maria and Grace.
They were talking about how they started this live shopping thing.
You can tell him, like, legit, excited about it.
And so I was like, oh, my God, you got to have me on.
So when are we doing that?
Do you know the date?
So that's next Tuesday, August 25th.
It's live at 7 p.m. Eastern.
So it is on our website right now if you go to the store, like the shop, and it's going to look under live shopping.
There's a lovely photo of Gina.
And yeah, we're going to bring you on and we're going to talk about all these things and we'll do some live shopping.
Well, yeah, because I, when you find great products, sharing is caring.
That's literally how I find everything.
Jen from Cheekbone Beauty.
So I showed a mascara that I was using.
It was like Dior or something from Sephora because what do I know?
And she's like, girl, there are so many better like one Canadian companies and better for you
mascara.
Let me send you something.
I'm like, only if you come on my podcast.
So she's going to come on my podcast.
She sent me that primer.
Oh, it's so good.
The primer and this, this blush that is just, I don't even know what this is.
Anyway, so I love that.
You can tell I get excited because I love products.
Like I think that they, anything.
that inspires you, brings you hope. Like, you know, obviously we don't want to sell women's shit
or anything, but that's going to be fun. Also, you have an event coming up. Your Rise event. So I'm
going to be there. And there's a couple things. So Maria just got back, like she said, from a little
holiday, which we actually are going to be doing a retreat at the place. Don't say where it was,
but how was it? Oh, my God. I love that I'm on your show right now, but I want to go back. I don't
want to be here. I want to be back where I was. It's amazing.
I cannot wait.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
So we finally have picked a date for our retreat.
It's going to be September or early October, October, 2007.
So next year.
So we're going to be doing that.
We're also working on a conference.
So it's time that we do our own conference.
That's going to be when, April?
Yes.
So we're going to share all.
We're going to like unveil.
We're going to do like a big reveal.
So we're working with Revolution Heard to do some fun stuff.
Community is important to both of us.
And what you may or may not know is their store also gives back as well, right?
So there's so many great reasons for us to partner up.
So we got some fun stuff coming up.
We're going to attach all the Maria's details.
RevolutionHer.com is the website that you can go to to find more information about everything.
We'll also post it in this post with the live and then also on the podcast details as well.
And then you can go and follow at Revolution.
Her TM is the Instagram.
Yeah.
Okay.
So sit down 16 pounds of the program.
What's your advice to,
how are you keeping your shit together this summer?
Let me do that.
Oh, my gosh.
There is no keeping anything together this summer.
Let me just start with that.
No.
But I am so thankful for the program.
Honestly, it's gotten me eating again.
I know that sounds crazy, but because nothing would stay in my body, I wasn't eating anything.
And you've literally changed my life.
So for me, 16 pounds down, I still have a few to go.
I'm wearing stuff that I haven't worn in like 12 years.
I should have probably gotten rid of it, but I'm actually glad that I didn't.
And for me, it's just every day kind of reminding myself that if I make a little,
little change over here. It's like dropping your iPhone. If you drop your iPhone, you're not
going to all of a sudden step on it and make things worse. You pick it up. You move on, right?
So I am really trying to embrace that in every little blip, just come back to what you've taught us.
Yeah, you drop that iPhone and you're like, please don't be cracked. Please don't be cracked.
Oh, my God. It does. It goes tumbling.
Di particulates, that's no joke. That's a, you know, a very serious issue.
that you have. What was it, what do you think it was, the, the calming down of inflammation?
What? I think. I don't, I mean, I've gone through, I've had three different cancers.
I've had diverticulitis. I've got a spine thing. I, for me, it's, there's always something.
And I've learned that the diverticulitis, once the inflammation calmed down, I went to a naturopath.
I worked with your program. It was, everything was just on fire. My whole body was.
was just on fire. I wasn't listening to my body. I wasn't listening to myself. I wasn't slowing down.
We do hear this from a lot of women, too. We kind of don't learn until your body tells you
you have something to learn. And it's the worst way to learn it. So I'm thankful that I'm listening
now. I've definitely gotten there. That's great to hear. Yeah. Well, I want to
Thank you for spending time with me today and coming on because I think you're so inspiring in so many ways and you really are doing good work. So I'm really excited for the stuff that we have planned. And you know, I'm here for you. And I'm definitely here to shop with you. So when is that next Tuesday? Next Tuesday?
Yes. So Tuesday, join us live. We're going to do some live shopping. And then in September, Thursday, September 24th, we're going to have a like deep conversation at Rise. It's an evening.
for women. That's in Burlington. It's a dinner for 100 women. Yeah, I went there last year. It was
fantastic. It's just great. I love, you, you're like me where you don't just want to do, like,
so many people put on events, and then everyone just comes with their friends. They don't speak to
anybody. And it's so claky. And it's just like, you know, the host sits at the front table
and doesn't even give the fuck what anyone's doing. And we definitely are looking to do that differently,
and you do it so well. So we're going to put all the contact information up. It's going to be fun. It's
going to be a great fall. It's going to be a great year. It's going to be the year of community and
connecting and doing some fun stuff. Thanks, everyone, for joining us today. I hope you enjoyed the
conversation as much as I did have a fantastic day and I'll see you later. Maria, thank you so much.
I adore you. Thanks, Gina. Love you. Bye, everyone.
