Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm going to be honest with you, this podcast is unapologetically a hot mess because that is what midlife feels like sometimes. Why, though? And how do we make it better? Do we all just need facelifts and g-lp-1s? I mean, let's talk about it. No bullshit, no wellness wankery here because we're trying to make real change and change is hard. But we're in this together. Welcome to the Livy Method podcast. Hello, good morning, happy Monday. I am a little bit cool outside. So I thought I'd bring it inside in my little workout area. This is where I do my little workouts. I have a little walking treadmill pad there. This is like my little monitor I bought, which is really great.
Starting point is 00:00:45 It's one of those portable ones. So you can take it. Kids will take it outside and watch movies. I'll use it in my morning workouts so I can see questions because I can't get up close to my phone. I also have my Peloton bike that I got, I think during the pandemic. I don't ride it as much as I used to, but I'm going to get it. back on because it's great for getting my heart rate up and then I have a small little set of weights here that I do. Thank you. I'm sorry. Okay. Good morning. Okay, so it's Monday. I just got back
Starting point is 00:01:16 from a road trip late last night where I ate my face off. I had Burger King. I haven't had Burger King in a while. Oh my gosh. With the onion rings, so good. And as I was eating them, they were delicious, but I could also taste like the greasiness of them and, you know, all that like 20 minutes later, my belly was like, are you kidding me? And I ended up burping up onion rings for like the rest of the ride there. And the next day, because we just wanted to hit the road real quick. We went through McDonald's. I had a sausage and egg McMuffin.
Starting point is 00:01:49 I asked if I could get some lettuce and some tomatoes on it. They were like, no, ma'am, you can't. So fine. And then we were kind of like here, there, and everywhere. Just really not an opportunity. the way the way we went on the road. We left without packing snacks because we left 6 o'clock on Saturday night and just, you know, not a lot of grocery stores and stuff. Not that it's an excuse. Do I regret? Absolutely not. What would I have done differently? Probably pack some healthier foods.
Starting point is 00:02:17 I usually do when I go on a road trip, but this was so impromptu last minute. My point is, I really felt it. Good. So if you go on a road trip or you go or you just have a day where you you're kind of eating all the things. One, I hope you enjoy it. I really enjoyed that Whopper and my onion rings. Like thoroughly enjoyed it. Did I pay for it afterwards? Absolutely I did.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Do I feel like shit today? Yes. Do I regret it? No, I don't regret. I don't regret having it, but I regret not being better prepared with snacks. But the point is you're going to notice how you feel when you eat foods like that. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy them.
Starting point is 00:03:01 But what I love is we do feel it. So this is our body saying like, hey, great, hope you enjoyed that. Now I feel like garbage today. Let's eat a little healthier. So 20 and I just got back from the grocery store. I'm like, I need some leaf of grains. I need some grains. Peaches are out.
Starting point is 00:03:18 I got myself some peaches. I'm excited about that. Hopefully they're fresh peaches. They did say Ontario, Canada peaches. I give them a little smell test. They smelled okay. So I'm going to really double down on eating, you know, foods that make me feel good today and will help me get back to feeling my best. So that's what back on track is, right? So I indulged, no regrets. Did I get on the scale today? No, is it up? Probably, I would probably guess two or three pounds. I am, it's less about getting that scale down for me and get back to feeling good because I was feeling good before I left. So you're going to notice the foods affect you. But have that be part of your journey. this summer, right? Had the food and then be like, oh, wow, okay, that didn't make me feel great. And those are, that's the rewiring of those foods. That's reconnecting. So you might think
Starting point is 00:04:09 about a food, oh, yummy, delicious, but then when you get into your body, you're like, no, remember last time I had that, I'm good. And so that is really what getting in tune to your body scenes is all that. So don't forget back on track. I want to, if got any questions, load them up, I got my iPad here, I'm going to get into them. I want to talk to some of our new members, so I see some new people rolling in. So if you're watching this, hello, welcome. So this is the live, not mandatory by any means. Don't have to be watching hours of video.
Starting point is 00:04:37 This is more just to talk more in depth about some of the topics that come up. If you are new, make sure you search out the get starting guide in the app. So if you open up the app, you go to the bottom, click the guides. That will take you and you'll see get started. Everything you know about getting started on the living method. This is not one of our 91 day live sessions, but that's okay. you can still focus on fat loss. You can still expect to lose weight by following the basic food plan. So everything that you need to know is there. If you are a returning member, again, this is not
Starting point is 00:05:06 a 91 day guided session, but you're still on your journey. You still have access to the app, the tracking, all of the new content and posts. In it, we've also added and we'll be adding more to our menopause guide. So that's new. And also our GLP1 guide. So anyone who's taking GLP1. You can find more information about that. Tomorrow, Kelly Sweeney's joining me. So if you don't know Kelly, she's been with us for a while, hugely successful. If you don't follow us over on our, we have a, if you're on Instagram, we have a Libby Community Instagram account where we, it's all reshairs and posts from real members in our community. So a great way to connect with other members and kind of see what they're doing. And Kelly is one of more, more vocal,
Starting point is 00:05:49 more consistent posters. So she documents a lot of her journey on her Instagram account. and maybe you've been following her for a while, very successful at doing the program. Her mom Sue is also in the program, Hi Sue. And she has been very successful. And then she went through a really stressful period of her life and gained some way back. And so we're going to talk to her about that. We're going to talk to her about sort of what happened and how she's gotten back because she recently lost that way and reached her goal again.
Starting point is 00:06:19 And this is so normal. So this is so normal, right? This is not, oh, you failed. This isn't, oh, the diet didn't work because the thing about the living method is losing weight in a healthy way, right? So way different when you just starve and deprive yourself. You are actually reconnecting and reworking and rewiring hormones, for example. You're reconnecting with your body.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You're working through issues and associations. That's what's different. It doesn't mean that you won't gain your weight back because there's three reasons why you gain your weight back, right? Not giving your body time to adjust to your new weight. So you really need to give that body time. time to make your new weight the new norm, your new set point. So your hormones need to adjust around that weight, right? Blood flow, body temperature metabolism, all of that around your new weight
Starting point is 00:07:03 with however much fat that you've lost. And then so you don't give your body enough time. You go back into old habits and that's how you gain weight back. The second one is situational change. So Kelly will be able to talk more on this. Something stressful happens in your life, your routine changes, you know, something rocks your world. It has you dipping back into old habits. or, you know, stress levels increase and you're not able to, you know, manage those. Having to go long periods of time, right? Not being able to give that body the nutrients it needs. The third is just not being mindful and just going right back into old habits, right?
Starting point is 00:07:39 That's why a lot of this is about establishing new routines and new habits for you. So that brings us to the summer. So anyway, we're going to talk to her about that. We need to really normalize that. So here's the summer. Summer comes along every year. What's your normal store? What's your story? Do you normally get weight over the summer? Are you stressing all summer about what you look like? Are you miserable and you know
Starting point is 00:08:01 refusing to wear you know put your sleeves out, you know, and you're raised in suit? Like what's your story? How do you want that story to change? So this is a really an awareness summer. So those of you, there's people in the program, for example, who are you lost their weight? This is your first summer, right? Not having to lose weight. What's your summer story going to be? And you really want to protect your program. You want to protect your progress. So you want to be mindful coming off that new weight loss, right? You don't want to go back into old habits. What do you want your summers to be moving forward? Okay, let me just get in and see when you guys got for questions. I'm here till I'm also here tomorrow. I'm going to talk with Kelly in Wednesday and then I'm off for a couple weeks, but the team's going to be covering for me. So we still have some guest experts. We're still, we'll still be checking and we'll still be doing all the things. So just a heads up on that. In case. you don't see me let's get into my questions you let me find you there we go summer clip summer club summer club all right see where we are out good morning I went for a uterine ablation surgery last Tuesday so I have been offline for a few days got on the scale this morning and I'm down into a lower decade haven't been here in six years so happy oh Margaret I love this for you right so this is where sometimes stress or you know um whatever that is a state and a like a state of healing can
Starting point is 00:09:31 actually help so what i love about the program is you're all that you're not just losing weight you're making your body healthier we did that post actually we had that post the other day on healing because we have quite a few people who schedule surgeries obviously for this time because they maybe they can better take time off work or whatever that is um so it's easier for them so healing is absolutely part the journey and this is what I love about any any of the prep work you're doing for a surgery coming up having done the program lost your weight is helping your body get healthier right so so a lot of times people will lose weight when they are stressed out for example because they're not eating high stress that tends to happen when you're younger as you get older stress tends to help you
Starting point is 00:10:15 pile on the weight not the other way around so don't forget don't forget our sickness protocol So sickness protocol can also be used whenever like emotional stress or can also use physical stress in the body like surgeries and whatnot. You might not have much of an appetite. So when you come back to eating, you want to be mindful about that. So don't forget to follow that sickness protocol. But happy healing. Happy healing.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Happy to hear you're taking time off. Yeah. I do take time off. So I'm lucky that I get to travel quite a bit with work. And so Tony and I actually joined like a bit. business like a it's a it's like I don't think it's like it's like a business networking but a business group where it's called a EO Entrepreneurs organization bridge to kind of meet other people in business to have other people to talk to and whatnot and we join one where they they kind of travel around
Starting point is 00:11:08 they're going to Edmonton for example this summer and this is where you sit and you can work through some of the things that you're struggling with work so family life business world and personal. And it's really interesting because what you do is you write out, okay, like, what's going on in my, let's say, my personal life, right? And so you're like, what's, what's the thing, what's the thing that's bothering me? Why is it bothering me? And that's, you really, really go deeper, kind of like when we're trying to find our wise. And you really, really go in deep. And then you have an opportunity to sit in a room full of people. Anyway, through that, we do quite a bit traveling, which is great. But Tony and I, I was just saying this the other day. Like, we are
Starting point is 00:11:54 travel broke. We, just why you don't see me rolling around in fancy clothes. And, you know, like, don't get me wrong. We're like not, we're not struggling or anything, but we are absolutely travel broke. One, we have four kids. But two, we spend all of our money on travel. So that's, you know, we don't, I'm not out shopping all the time and buying this and buying that. that's why you see I wear the same things kind of over and over. I did buy this new top, but I actually returned a top that I didn't like. I got myself a couple new tops for being committed to my early morning exercise. Also, I was just tired of the tops that I had that were showing my boobs. I don't like, it just was like a kid enough of that. But yeah, so I love travel.
Starting point is 00:12:38 I love getting away. I always feel really rare when I take time off the group, but also, you know, you need to get away from your life. We step back. I'm going to have the team filling in for me. So Odette's going to be here. Kim's going to be here. We're going to have some of our guests experts fill in some for checkouts. We have Atlanta McGinn, Andrew Blakey, Sherry Perez. We have great content that we've created.
Starting point is 00:13:00 I'm going to still continue to write content while I'm away. I'll do some check-ins every now and then. Summers are hard for me. So thank you. Summers are hard for me. The season reminds me how much I dislike my body. Yeah. This is what I was just talking about, Linda.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Let's get into this. Summers are hard for me. This season reminds me how much I dislike my body and my coping mechanisms. It's almost like winter allows me to hide behind the darkness. Yeah, it does, right? We can put on big sweaters. We can stay home. We could just separate, but that's not what living is about.
Starting point is 00:13:31 We get used to that, right? Like, that's something that we've, it almost feels uncomfortable to go out there and connect with people again. This is why I think connection and community is so important in providing a really safe space. I actually did a post on that yesterday and oh gosh, I got. got so much love on that and understanding and and and I think community is something that you should be able to be yourself feel like you're accepted you are loved and also still be working towards making change like obviously you're not happy with where you're at what can we do to change that right
Starting point is 00:14:02 um where'd that go okay i am focusing on letting go of my feelings so that new ones can emerge yeah i am 64 this year and have only so many summers left. I don't want to spend them wishing for something else. Yeah. Right. And I think, you know, I feel the same. I feel the same. I don't want to spend any more of my life feeling like I don't belong or trying to get into rooms or sit at tables where I feel like I'm not wanted. And I don't know that it has to do with the people. I don't know if it has to do with the people or the way I'm showing up and how I'm feeling. Like, for example, I wrote that post yesterday.
Starting point is 00:14:51 I'll share it in the group. I wrote this post about how I've never really felt like I belonged. Like in, you know, in public school, I didn't really, I was like a champion of the underdog. I didn't have a lot of friends. I had a few friends. They were great, but I never went to the cool parties. I never got invited to stuff. I kind of just kind of friends with everybody.
Starting point is 00:15:11 But I also worked. So I spent a lot of my public school, high school, working. Once I got a job, I love having a job. I had like three jobs, like cleaning rooms at the Holiday Inn, you know, working busting tables at Swiss chalet. Like I've done all of the jobs. And so, you know, I was working a lot. And even through university, I worked my way through university. And so I was saying this the other day, like I would come home from work and my friends would all be out for the night.
Starting point is 00:15:41 And like, no one would leave me a note and let me know, like tell me where they went. And we didn't have phones. So it's not like you could text them. I would have to guess if I wanted to go out for the night, guess where they went. And I would say, can't you guys leave me a note? And they're like, well, you should know we're going out. And I was just like, oh, fuck. So I really never, it doesn't matter where I went.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I just never really felt like I belonged. Maybe that was, especially in my early years. And when you're carrying, you know, excess weight, you are carrying yourself differently. And I don't know that that changed after I lost the weight. I probably still felt the same. And that's why people like, oh, you can't relate to living in a larger body. Once you've lived in a larger body, you never forget it. It's like once you've been broke, you never forget it.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Like every time I go to the grocery store and tap my card, I am so afraid that there's not going to be money there because I've been broke. And once you've been broke, you never forget it. And so it got me thinking because I'm like, if it wasn't the people around me, then what was it? It was me. but also me not like me not being who I truly was meant that I wasn't attracting my vibe wasn't attracting my tribe so me not being me or trying to be something else right like you're not really owning you or letting these feelings hold you back isn't allowing you to go out there and attract what is meant to come to you including the people or the opportunities or the things
Starting point is 00:17:10 And so it's really important not only that we let things go, but we really get to know who we are and be really okay with that. And that's what I love about our community, because when you bring people together, we have this one common goal, right? Like we're trying to show up every day and just try to fucking be healthy and lose something already, right? And we all know how hard that is. We all know how hard it. And we all know it's so much more than what you meet and when. And I think that's the common, the thing we have in common with each other. But we don't have to all be the same.
Starting point is 00:17:41 And we don't also have to also, we also don't have to agree on everything. So one of the things that I'm thinking of changing in the fall is, yes, we have all of our content in the ad, but more, like, let's say we talk about protein. Right. And we have like, here's how much protein you need to have. Well, then, then we need to talk about what protein are you using? What questions do you have about protein? How do you feel about this conversation of protein? How do you fit it into your day, right?
Starting point is 00:18:05 There's so much there that we can learn from each other. But yeah, I think this is so huge. I feel like this the same. I don't want to not be me. So I just went through a period of swearing. Again, you might have noticed maybe in the spring program. I swore a lot. And that was really me saying fuck it.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Because me, me not swearing. Because swearing is part of my vocation. It's really interesting what's happened to me. Because I used to swear all the time because it's just part of my language. I don't know where it's just part of me, my language. They say people who swear are people who are truthful and honest. I could not be more truthful and my mom washed my mouth out with soap once because I lied when I was young and I swear I've never told a lie since. I'm very honest. I'm very honest about this. But what was my fucking train of thought?
Starting point is 00:18:56 What I totally lost my train of thought there. Oh God, what was it? Oh my God, I can't remember. I guess it's I guess it's meant to go. But anyway, in that post, I talked about, I talked about just finding your people and finding your tribe. And so this is about you figuring out you. You don't want to spend your summers wishing for something else. So what do you need to do to make the changes that you need to make? And I think it's far beyond just letting go, right? It's far beyond just letting go. It's knowing who you are and then be like, okay, I can still want to make change and not be happy with, like you can not be happy with your nose and still deserve to be in the room. Right? You can feel uncomfortable in your body, but still deserve it.
Starting point is 00:19:38 to be there. And so that's that fine line. I don't want to spend the rest of my life stressing about or not going to the party or not doing the things that I want to do. Swear. I was talking about swearing. God, thank God, I got that back. Oh my God. That's my brain. I'm just tired. So I tried not to swear because people told me I shouldn't swear. And so then I'm like, I can't do this. I can't talk freely. I can't formulate my thoughts and worry about other people, like worrying about other people not liking me swear. And so I just let it go. So this is my whole point. I let it go last spring program and I swore a lot. And it was very freeing. And the first time I swore, I remember someone said something about it. And I was like, okay, I just, I can't like it was interesting. It was a
Starting point is 00:20:25 really interesting test. First day I let it go. I'm like, Gina, just be you. Let it fly, girl. Just be you. And because when I'm authentically up here and sharing with you and someone said something. someone says something so this is like you not like not showing your arms and you go and you decide that you're going to wear a tank top and not care and let it go and you walk into the room and someone's like oh you're right you know i got some exercises for you right like that oh okay i'm retreating retreating retreating retreating retreating retreating retreating back i'm retreating back going back into my what you call it i'm going to hide in the darkness again so so what you got to look at is that that, so I was like, what is that about being tested already? Yeah, let's see what you got,
Starting point is 00:21:11 sister, right? So that's where you don't want to retreat. That's where you just want to put it out there again and put it out there again and put it out there again and then you will use to you being you. And so then I just let it fly. And it's interesting. I haven't sworn a lot lately and nor do I feel the need to. It's very strange and just organically come into a place where I don't think, I don't even know if I swore once this whole summer club. It's weird. So, you know, it's letting go looks differently for everybody, but we need to, you need to just be you, see what happens, and then keep going with it and trust your gut. It's not an easy thing to do, Linda, not an easy thing to do, right? So what's your summer
Starting point is 00:21:50 story going to be? So this summer might be your awareness summer. What's next summer going to be? What's the story next summer? Helen! Helen! I'm going to the Eat, Pray, Love Restaurant in Rome on my 70th birthday. thanks to Tony's recommendation and hearing you talk about it all the time, I will eat the pasta. I love this for you. So when Tony first took me on my first trip to Rome, I love Rome. It's my favorite place on her. And I, Eat, Pray, Love was like, I watched Eat, Pray, Love a million times. I love that book. I love the movie. I love the, I love the movie. And there's a restaurant,
Starting point is 00:22:25 a Santalusia, a Santa Lucia restaurant. And they have the best pasta that's just like cheese and truffles on it. It's so simple. But I spent, like, Like after I went to Rome and had it, I spent like two years trying to find it. And then I got to go back with my mom and her 70th birthday. And we had it and I ordered two, two, two plates. Ask for extra truffles. Ask for extra truffles. I love this for you, Helen.
Starting point is 00:22:51 I love this for you. Who's that? I love that for you. My aunt does that too. She ships at Value Village and it's been in 180 countries. I love that. Shops at Value Village. My scale doesn't show all the hard work you're doing. Yes. Got my H-O-M-R-I-R results on Friday down 2.3.3. My natural path is bursting with
Starting point is 00:23:18 excitement. This number means how well your body handles insulin and manages blood sugar. The goal is 1.0. That report goes right on the fridge to remind me releasing habits that no longer serve me. This, I mean, this is, there's so many, so many people have shown the results of, like, everyone measures success on the scale and I get it. We all want to lose weight, right? Like, we all want to, that's the whole point. You're here, you want to lose weight or you're here because you're trying to maintain that weight that you've lost. Or you're here because you're not trying, you're trying not to gain weight. I wish there was a way that you could truly measure.
Starting point is 00:23:48 We've actually thought about doing some clinical trials and being able to prove the health results of doing something like the living method, right? And the reality is that cost tons of money. And we don't need to prove it because we do know people are losing a clinical amount of weight. We do know people are getting healthier from within the program. We know there's no downside to it. So I just am not into proving that anymore. However, like this is proof in the pudding, right? Like this is your getting off your cholesterol meds, decreasing your, you know, drop your A1C,
Starting point is 00:24:20 going from pre-diabetic normal range, like decreasing inflammation. Like there's all sorts of, you know, if you do have a health issue, you do have the opportunity to be tested these things along. But this is like the, this is amazing. This is that proof in the pudding, right? This is the proof in the pudding. Went to Halifax, ate the seafood, ate the ice cream, the cow's ice cream, ate the cars, but listened to my hunger cues and still came home a pound lighter. Walking sea, air and good people were amazing. This is it. Your body's not looking to gain weight. Your body's not looking to make you fat. And it's so much harder than you realize to actually take the foods you are eating and have them convert into fat, right? Usually it's
Starting point is 00:25:01 long periods of time without eating, high stress, lack of sleep, hormones being out of whack that leads to, of course, overeating. So going long periods of time without eating and then overeating when you do eat. Like, why did you gain weight? When you track your story back to your journey, unless, of course, it started when you were a child, then you still want to go back and track what was going on there. It's usually tied into something. So my weight gain happened in university, right? Like that's, I did not really have a weight issue. I was probably about 130, 130 pounds in, in high school, right? I didn't even give my weight a thought in public school. It didn't think about it in high school and it would only, my parents don't own a scale. So it would only be
Starting point is 00:25:44 if I went to my friend's house and they had a scale, would I even know what my weight was. It didn't stop us from talking about diets though, because diets was just part of culture and kind of just like what you, what you talked about back then, right? Like it was just, it wasn't even a thing. But mine was like university. So, university was very stressful for me. I, I was a small town girl. I followed my boyfriend. I felt like fish out of water. I did not feel like I belonged at all. Did not feel part of the cool group. I had a really, and people always, you meet me. I'm outgoing and whatever, but I think now I've got some serious anxiety issues. And so, like, I can get in front of a room and talk. I could do this all day, but like knowing I have to go out there
Starting point is 00:26:31 and like meet people terrifies me. And then once I'm there, I'm like, I love it because I'm always surrounded by our community and our people, so I feel so safe whenever I go out into the community. But so university was really tough for me. And my boyfriend cheated on me. So that was a whole other thing. And so I gained not, I didn't gain like the Frosh 15 during first year. I gained like the Frosh 50 first year. And then I got into bodybuilding and were really restrictive eating and then from there I tried to lose weight like it was just it was a lot and then I was working like three jobs at the time so I worked at a gym um I worked at a futon shop and I also taught classes at school so I was where again working all the time and then like a lot of all-nighters and then drinking you know drinking beer and then just crappy
Starting point is 00:27:20 eating a lot of processed foods when I you know did snack at night every now and that was either like not eating all day or like eating pizza probably like once a week but like just you know university calf food at the time which was a middle grade so that was sort of that's what caused me to gain weight that's what caused me to get high stress super high stress um lack asleep pulling all-nighters going long times without eating overeating when I did eat like that's really what caused my weight gain now I could have gotten my blood tester or gone and seen like I went to my doctor and he's like yeah you're fine you don't need to be tested. You eat too much. You don't exercise enough and you're big bone. Right. So, but there's usually
Starting point is 00:28:01 a story you can track back. So something traumatic happened in your life. Or like if you, like you got pregnant with kids, but then, you know, it wasn't the actual gaining weight, which was the problem. Maybe you did a deprivation, starvation diet afterwards. Or like the stress of that and the lack of the sleep. And then maybe you got went back into the, you know, back then it was like six months maternity leave. And then like your baby was barely born and you're going back to work and the stress of that. So there's always that story and then figuring that out, figuring that peace out. So when it comes to once you've lost, once you give your body, address its needs, right? Create the environment.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Your body can even focus on fat loss, manage stress, get the sleep, move your body, give it the good foods, do that for long enough. Right? That's what you're doing. Then give your body time to adjust your hormones around. That's your new weight. So this is why you can go to Halifax and have the lobster. rolls and have the cows ice cream and do that. And then you are also walking a lot. You're being social. Like that's it. There's no there's no big secret to to weight maintaining your weight.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Right. It's that your body doesn't want you to gain the weight. So if you just understand how you are feeling and you come back and your weight is up, all right, let's give my body what it needs to help it focus on, you know, getting back to feeling my best. That's what this is all about. that's what it's all about. I love the content you've been writing lately. Hi, Nazneen, your post yesterday about feeling left out and the importance of community is so amazing. I'm really enjoying writing again. I'm really enjoying, I've taken a look at these groups and I used to try to get ahead of it. Right? And now what I'm doing is I'm looking at what's the conversation and then what value can I add of what I've learned to the conversation. So thank you. I'm really making
Starting point is 00:29:50 an effort, especially when it comes to the fall program. I know some people have been with us for while and the conversation is changing out there and I want this to be on weight loss, you know, maintenance is really, it's really just a place to work towards your roles in life. You know? And so thank you. I've been really enjoying writing. This is where I really want to hear from you, the kind of content that you want to learn. Like, there's a lot going on out there in, it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Someone asked me about Stacey Sims today during my workout. Stacey Sims today. Stacey Sims is like, she's big in the menopause world and fitness. She's super jacked up. She works with athletes and sports teams. And you go on social media and it's great because there's a lot of content out there. But then you don't really know what's what, right? Like the other day, this girl was on, this doctor was on Mel Robbins podcast.
Starting point is 00:30:40 I love Mel. She's curious. She's inquisitive. I mean, sometimes, you know, the stuff that some of her guests say, I wish she would ask more follow-up questions. So she had a guest on talking about how you shouldn't mix bananas and blueberries in a smoothie because it negates the, you know, polyphenols or whatever, which like. we're just trying to get our fruit snack in. And if you are, you know, if you're not drinking your
Starting point is 00:31:01 water, you're not moving your body, you're like, you know, I had a burger like me for breakfast the other day. Like, we don't worry, need to worry about getting all the polyphenols from our blueberries. And so Mel was like, oh my God, I've been doing it all wrong and I put this blueberry in my smell. I wish, I wish Mel would have said, do we really need to fucking worry about that? Now, maybe she did. And it's in a podcast that I, no one listened to because they just saw that short little 90 second clip on social media. No one's providing context to anything. No one provides context to anything anymore. Same thing with Stacey Sims, right? Like I don't know that she's wrong about the things that she's saying. I think she just kind of takes science and then kind of goes with it a
Starting point is 00:31:39 little bit. Like she's saying like how women's bodies are different from men's bodies. And they are, but that doesn't mean we need to do different workouts or anything like that. So I find there's no context to anything. And I want this place to be like, hey, people are saying this. Like, what's the real deal? Because I'm not trying to, once you're in here, I'm not trying to sell you anything. Right? I'm not trying to sell you anything. Once you pay your 20 bucks a month, you're in, you're in. I'm not actually trying to sell you anything. I'm sure I may be promoting my book because I think it's a great book. And, you know, if you're into buying books, you should grab it. But outside that, I'm not really, I'm not trying to sell you supplements. I'm talking
Starting point is 00:32:18 about supplements, but you can buy them from, I don't make money off of you. buying your supplements from whatever place you buy them. So I'm really want to get into and have conversations. My latest thing is I want to have conversations people are not having. I want to go deeper. I want to provide contacts. I really want to have some good takeaway so people truly understand, you know, what they need to do. So thanks for saying. I love that. Last night I went out for dinner and I had not show and I had not showed and I love them. What? Last night I went out for dinner. and I had not showed and I love them. I had a Caesar salad today.
Starting point is 00:33:01 My weight is up a little bit, but I'm not worried. I'm going to be drinking water after my trip, but you do learn. Oh, I don't really sure what you're saying, but I know what you're saying. The little things you're doing here or there. Okay, this is where we, okay,
Starting point is 00:33:14 what was our plan before the summer? Right? We're going to hardcore work towards our goals and maybe that's like, okay, wait a minute. That's not happening, right? And turns out I want to have fun, enjoy the summer, whatever,
Starting point is 00:33:23 just happy to maintain my weight. Great. Right? Or maybe you're making that choice. I was going to be like, fuck it. Let's see what goes on. Maybe you're kind of, you know, feeling a little uncomfortable. You're like, okay, let me do a push to get back to feeling my best. That's what this is. This is the ebb and flow of summer. What is summer for you? What do you want it to be? How do you want to feel at the end of summer? This is why that post, don't wait till September. The small things you do absolutely add up. So if you know you're going to have a day we're kind of off eating, try to stay focused on drinking your water.
Starting point is 00:33:49 Right. That's one thing I did really well. Just constantly drinking, drinking, drinking, drinking. Food choices were shit. Got my water in. Check. right wasn't really able to move in a car for like 12 hours in the 24 hours there's in a car for probably 12 hours so what am i doing today the reason why i came at you with my workout gear on is i did my 730 early morning workout i'm going to put my running shoes on and i'm going to go for a walk for like i don't know like 40 minute walk i'm going to go for a walk afterwards right because i got to get back to feeling my best that's what this is about that's what we're saying we need things you did. We need to see people who so many think are having a great life and struggle. Oh my God. Listen, my life, well, you guys know. And this is, I don't talk about me because I like
Starting point is 00:34:38 talking about myself. I actually really don't. I talk about me because I, I, I'm the only reference that I have and I'm sharing in the hopes that you kind of see yourself in that, right? I am absolutely far from, like I do have an absolute blessed life, so I was able to find love later in life and I love that I have Tony and he's amazing. There's a bit of a dynamic there. Do you know what I mean? Like his family is Chinese. I can barely speak to his parents.
Starting point is 00:35:07 I am clearly Caucasian, very white, small town. My kids are black, Guyanese. They had a Guinez grandmother and their dad was Guineas. Their dad died. He was very much a part of his life. For most of it, until he got really sick, you know, he got sick, almost died. Having to navigate my kids' life lives without their dad, it's like even now, my kids cry almost every day still, every day.
Starting point is 00:35:34 And they deal with it differently. I have one who won't say anything about it, one who jokes until she has a breakdown. I have a child right now that I'm not connecting with because we can't for the sake of our family. She has mental health and addiction issues. She was in rehab for seven months. Came out. We got her, you know, an apartment and right down the street from the place that she goes to get help.
Starting point is 00:35:58 And she is, I don't know, we don't even know where she is. Which, you know, in some ways, like bringing us so much peace. But another way we're checking to see if she's still alive some days. Like this is, you know, what we're dealing with. Work-wise, you know, business, all sorts of business stuff that comes with the business. Like, you know, I always thought I would, I wanted to run a business in a different way. Turns out you have to write, in order to keep paychecks, you have to run a business, the way business needs to be run.
Starting point is 00:36:28 So I'm doing my best there, trying to sleep at night and run an ethical business. There's a lot. You know, I'm sure there's a lot. There's more. There's more, you know. Like, it's interesting because I get a lot of love from our community, but I also get a lot of hate from people too, which is really interesting because it's weird having people hate you when you wish you could just talk to them and provide context and be like, hey, let's have a call.
Starting point is 00:36:57 Okay, so maybe I said this and you're upset, but like, let's talk about that and I don't mean to hurt anybody. Like, for example, if I say something that on a live that offends someone, usually I'm generalizing and the lives are entertaining and I'm, you know, it's never trying to hurt any one person. I respect everybody. So there's a lot I deal with it. There's a lot of mom guilt. There's a lot of like insecurities that I have not being good enough, not feeling worthy. It's interesting. I sometimes feel like
Starting point is 00:37:27 I sometimes I feel like the world throws things out me so I can. So my whole thing is like how can I serve? Right. Like that's what do I have to offer? I love joy and I love talking about this stuff. And so I'm always come like, okay, how can how can I serve? And I'm really, really working on that right now, being really grounded and kind of like channeling that. That's my thing that I'm going back to. I used to do that all the time. And so that's where these posts are kind of coming from. I'm like, okay, what can I just write organically that I feel like it's going to resonate to people?
Starting point is 00:38:01 So that's what I'm, so I got it all. My point is I'm in the, I'm in the, I'm there with you. I'm there. I had a friend, I had my best friend of 20 years. And something happened one night, some drunk night with her sister. and me and it was like I thought we were going to laugh about it the next day honestly and my best friend cut me off without so much as a she's like you're dead to me and I literally thought we were going to laugh about it and completely no context wouldn't talk to me
Starting point is 00:38:32 wouldn't have me explain the situation it was all everybody's own interpretation and it's just like so crazy but then a part of me was like oh I felt a little relieved. And so I was like, huh, this, my friends have known me for 20 years and they think something of me. They've known me for 20 years. How was this the takeaway? I just didn't have the energy at the time to explain. And I could have. And I just, oh, I couldn't have because then they blocked me and whatever. Anyway, that friend since came back. The one friend who had happened with apologize, like she apologized. So she's like, so she went told the story to her sister. She came and she apologized. She's like, I'm sorry. And we probably should have had a conversation. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:39:20 no big deal. Like whatever. The friend, who was my best friend, just completely shut me out. And along with her went my other friends that I knew through her. And they all just, that's it. Lost my whole friend circle. My whole friend circle. Now she came back a couple years later and was like, want to talk and I was like I don't think so like because I had changed so much and what I realized was that that friendship was so so sleeky and it really was like it was cliquey and small and I losing that friendship is the best thing to happen to me because it opened up the door and I realized so many people are having real women are out there having real conversations women are out there sharing their real lives. Like they're having, and that's the thing about me. I was just so real. And then she
Starting point is 00:40:13 was just pretending like everything in her life was sunshining and rainbows. And I was kind of this mess that she couldn't have in her life. And I just owned the mess. And it turned out, we're all in a bit of a mess and we're all in it together. So yeah, but listen, friendship thing is really hard. Friendships are very hard as you get older and it hurts when you lose friendships. And and all of this, what is this all about? Why do I talk about this in weight loss? Because we're trying to make change physically and mentally. We're trying to feel our best physically and mentally.
Starting point is 00:40:47 We're trying to do our best. And that's what's really hard. And I think that's one of the things when I used to talk about, like, I want to do weight loss because I was really good at that. But then I want to help. My real goal, ultimately, is like, look what you're learning and doing to lose weight. You take all of those same things and you put it into anything. else you're doing in your life, right? That's what that's what that's about. It's about, okay,
Starting point is 00:41:13 you lost the weight. Now what? Now what are you going to do? Right? So everything that you are doing to lose weight are the same things you're going to do in your life to do whatever you want to do. And that that's the part that I'm excited about talking about. Let's help everyone lose their weight. Let's help everyone maintain their weight. What's the next conversation is truly like living that life, like if you can already, you feel it, you already know what it's going to be like. You feel it. Think about right now, like think about you, think about you and you're reaching your goal weight. Like you just, how you're going to feel, the clothes you're going to wear, how you're going to feel. That's so exciting. But then also there's a big piece of that, your relationship with other people.
Starting point is 00:41:54 And how does that change your life? And what are some of the fears that come with it? Oh, my God, what if I lose it? What if I gain it back? And what you know what I mean? Like, what if it changes this and changes that like there's so much that goes into it's not just as simple as lose my weight and that's it right there's a there's a lot that goes into that so there's a lot of conversations we have still trying to figure out what my weight goal is I have lost enough but I feel good my new clothes fit well tossed out my bigger clothes when do I know when to switch to maintenance great question um okay I want to Evan I want to read that in a second you know here's the thing I've talked to so many people. I've talked to so many people and not one person that's ever said a number. Not one person
Starting point is 00:42:39 that's ever said a number. And then people will think that they reach their, like, will go into maintenance, but then still show up maintenance trying to lose weight until they realize, what am I doing? I'm actually happy where I'm at. So I've had people say like, my number is 140. They get to 160 and they're like, you know what I'm good. What am I doing? I'm happy here. I get people whose goal is 160 and they're like, I want to go for more. They go to 140. I think, I think it's about feeling calm and confident in your body. And you can be like, let me do a round of maintenance and maintain and sustain this weight and see how I feel. And then I'm going to do another round or don't have to wait for another round. I'm going to try to lose more. I'm going to, I'm going to lose more.
Starting point is 00:43:18 Right. So this is sort of where like also your capacity where you might be like, I don't want to keep going. I want to lose more. I also don't want to hardcore keep going to lose more. So why don't I just be happy where I'm at right now, see how that feels, maintain this for a bit. And then when I have more capacity, I can go back and lose more, right? Summer's also a really hard time. Like, what do you? My questions I would ask you are like, how are you feeling about it? How do you feel about the weight that you're at right now?
Starting point is 00:43:44 Are you happy? Yeah, right? I feel good. My close fit well. Okay. How would you feel if you stop losing and went dismayntained? Oh, I feel like I'd want to lose more. Okay, but, okay, you can want to lose more.
Starting point is 00:43:59 But, but, but do you want to try for more right now? Right. I kind, I do, but I don't. Okay. So then why can't you just focus on, why can't you just show up every day to work on maintaining the weight that you have? And then when you feel like you are then ready to be like, let me lose more, then you can come back and reevaluate that. Right. So that's what how would I feel if I lost more? How would I feel if I stayed here? So that's the first thing. That's how you can decide if you're done or not. Right? How would I feel if I stopped now? How would I, Right? Oh, well, I, you want you want to lose more, but maybe not right now. So that's where I would kind of, that's the, that's how I would kind of figure that out. And then I would be like, if I was working towards depending on like what was going on the scale and I kind of knew like I wanted the scale to move, but I also wasn't really showing up in a way that really doing all of that was motivated to do all the things. Do I really care about losing a few more pounds? And am I chasing a number? Is it that I just want to see a number? So my number, my weight on my scale has always been 119 to 130. Right.
Starting point is 00:45:07 So now I'm, these days I'm landing around 129, 128. I'm probably like 132 today. Right. Do I care about ever going back to 125, 119? No, I don't. Like I just, I have no desire to try for that anymore. And not that I did try for it before, that was just kind of my range or set points of range. So I just don't, I have zero desire to try to be 120 or 120.
Starting point is 00:45:32 anymore. I just, I don't know, just don't. It's not in me, right? So I tried for a while and then I was like, it's just, no. So I'm happy in like a 120, 127, 132 range, I think is my range. Like, I'm happy there. I'm happy there. And so yeah, so this is not a number. This is not, this is not a number, I think. Every rando is trying to capitalize off menopause. It was so desperate. I brought a bracelet promising me an end to hot flashes. I feel proud of that. Do you know what? Okay, here's what I feel about this.
Starting point is 00:46:07 I feel like, I like hope. I like, listen, I don't want anyone selling me snake oil. But if you have the luxury of buying things that even just give you hope, because the placebo effect is real. Placebo effect is real. Like, they're learning that more and more, right? Really what's going on in our mind is really important and has an effect on us. So I'm all like, but if you, it's a beautiful bracelet, buy the bracelet.
Starting point is 00:46:31 it, you know? If like shaky, shaky boards, for example, right? Shaky, shaky boards, yeah, they can get your lymphatic system. They're not like any miracle workout thing. Those are the things you sit on and they shake. But if it adds a bit of like, if it makes your workout interesting and it gets you working out again, I think that's great. I think, I think that, I think new products are great. If you have the money, I think buying something, something that gives you hope, like I bought, you know, I bought one of those red light masks. Like, I don't know if it works, but I hope it does. and I feel cool wearing it. And it makes me do my skincare, right?
Starting point is 00:47:04 So it makes me do my skincare because I bought this mask. And listen, I did do my research and I bought the one that I, that did have some science back behind it, but we're not all scientists. So in one sense, I'm like, it's great. But yeah, like, you don't, I think, I think you just got to, you do have to watch. What is someone selling? Let me, let me research this a little bit. Like, what am I?
Starting point is 00:47:26 And so I, so I feel like. a lot of the world functions like women aren't smart, and so I have to be their champion, and I have to debunk this, and I have to debunk that. I don't do that. I assume that you are smart, and you are capable of making your own choices, and I assume also, though, you want to be informed, right? And that's what I'm doing. I'm kind of sharing what I've learned about it and sharing my thoughts about it, but I'm expecting that you're going to go and learn. But there's a lot. You don't want to, I don't want to put your blind faith in anyone, including me. And this is why there is the science behind the living method. This is why I do the why it works. I was like,
Starting point is 00:48:00 don't even put your blind faith in me, you know. I can tell you that I'm an ethical person. I like to sleep at night. I have kids. I don't want to make, there's so many ways I could make money. So listen, it's tempting. It's tempting, right? There's so many ways that I could make money that I don't. I don't make money because I do want to, like if I ever did a supplement line, I would do a line that I probably some really good quality ones for a great price. That's what I would do. And there wouldn't be anything miracle-wise. It would just be something like, let's get people actual quality and sell it for a good price.
Starting point is 00:48:36 I'm not doing that, by the way. And any products that I do show or share, I've actually used. Oh, which by, if you're using that bees for the, you can tell I didn't use it today. Like when I was doing a workout, you could tell, I was on my skin, you could tell you to use it. I found this beauty by bees serum. I posted it in the group. use it after a shower. If you use it after a shower, it makes a big difference. So if I remember sharing anything, it's because it's actually something that I really love. But yeah, it's tough out there
Starting point is 00:49:04 because I'm also, I know I'm way over time, but I'm just chatting. I think women are allowed to make money, right? Like I think that, you know, women are allowed to make. It's interesting because so, for example, menopause care, there's this big kind of thing going on with individual care. And it's complicated. It's complicated because, you know, being a doctor, a family doctor, you only have so much time to talk to somebody about the issues that they're going through. And there's a lot of, you know, doctors who aren't as informed and whatever. And so there are individualized menopause care coming up. That's not covered yet to pay out of pocket, which is great if you can afford that great.
Starting point is 00:49:45 And they're saying women who are going out route are taking away from the health care system. And it's our system that's broken. not a woman who's trying to make money to feed her family, even though she's chosen to be a doctor. But it's interesting because you'll have like women over here who are criticizing, well, you can't be a doctor and, you know, make money from what you're doing. But then the person over here who's criticizing the doctor is then like, hey, listen to me, criticize the doctor, and then also buy my book. And it's just so weird.
Starting point is 00:50:13 It's so complicated. It's so complicated. I don't know how I feel about it. I kind of, this is why I'm staying. I'm in the darkness back here. I like to kind of hang back a little bit. I'll tell you how I feel, but I'm assuming we're going to make your own decision. It's like the Wild West out there as well. I have been looking into emotional eating and how much it impacts the amount you eat and when you eat. Oh, God. Lisa, yes. What are your top tips for emotional eating, especially at night when women
Starting point is 00:50:38 typically get time to reward themselves and often choose food? Okay. Sandra Alia. She's great. Or Sandra Alia. Sandra Alia is one of our guest experts. You might not have known. her or seen her. She's a food addiction counselor. She talks about this. And Dr. Beverly David, our clinical psychologist, has also talked about this. I think both of those segments are actually in the resource guide in the app. So definitely check those out. I think emotional eating starts with, this is definitely, so this is when to eat, what to eat, how much do you? Are you actually hungry versus are you trying to eat your feelings right now? So, so that's hard to do in the moment. But when you're in the, but what you can do is recognize
Starting point is 00:51:15 that you do this. So one, be aware that you do this. Right? So, especially at night, women typically get time to reward themselves and often choose food. I think it's different. I think there's emotional eating and then there's reward. So you want to break those down, right? Are you rewarding yourself? Is that reward bringing you peace? Is that actually feeling like a reward or do you have that thing and immediately go into
Starting point is 00:51:39 self-depth, like berating yourself? Do you immediately go into berating yourself afterwards and then punishing yourself? If so, you've got to see that, oh, how, wow, that's not a great reward, right? So that's that, so that, so that, so let's talk about your reward system. I had a hard day, therefore I need to. Is there anything else that I can do in seeing that I have that behavior and feeling that right now, feel it right now, right? Is there anything I can do in that behavior that would make me feel better?
Starting point is 00:52:09 Having a bath? Oh, indulging in a show that maybe no one else is in a family likes to watch, like Love Island or Love is blind. or like, I don't know, some, I'm just pulling, I don't watch either of those. I'm just saying like one of those reality shows that maybe no one in family likes watching, but this is something for you, right? What else could you do? Indulge in some, get some creamies, right?
Starting point is 00:52:35 Like food costs money. Let's save up, like, let's get some new skincare routines, whatever that might be, calling a friend. I'm obviously a glass of wine. You don't want to switch out food for wine. So, you know, tea and a book. Tita book, go for a walk. Like, so, and I'm just throwing those out there because it's got to be something that actually feels like a reward to you. Right? You can't just be like, oh, I'll go for a
Starting point is 00:52:57 walk. Meanwhile, you're like, fuck, fucking tired. That's not a reward. That's just more work. Because that's the way you might see that. Right. So what, so that, that, that, you're going for the food to reward yourself because you had a long, stressful day. So you are just, are you looking for you time? I did this with wine, right? Sometimes I would just hold the wine. I'd pour the wine, hold the wine because that said, it's me time. It's fucking me time, everybody. Right? And that was me actually taking me time. It was the time where I did not feel guilty about doing anything else because I'm holding my wine and this represents me time. So everyone fuck off, leave me alone. It's me time. Right. But like did I need to hold the wine or drink the wine to own that time?
Starting point is 00:53:37 So can you own that reward time with a bath, with a walk, with a nighttime routine, with reading above with whatever. So, so evaluate your reward. Is your reward feeling like a reward? Is that food? And the other one is, is the food bringing you peace? So the emotional eating. So we can't think and eat at the same time and we love that good dopamine hits. The problem is it makes us feel worse every single time. So is this, allow yourself to eat it. Okay, recognize the feeling. I am fucking angry, sad, whatever it is right now. I'm going to eat this. Is this going to make me feel better? Like, let's see, like call a spade to spade.
Starting point is 00:54:16 Is I just going to rage eat it? Fine. Is it going to be worth it? Maybe. Am I prepared to deal with the aftermath? Yes, I am. But being like, is it actually going to bring me peace? It's going to help the situation or is it going to make it worse, right?
Starting point is 00:54:30 That's, that's, and this is where sometimes in the moment you can't do that. So this is where the next day, you would go back and be like, okay, what happened last day? Okay, so someone pissed me off or I was really sad. something happened. I'm bored. I'm unhappy in my life. Whatever that is. So I went and I ate the bag of chips and the ice cream. The bag of chips and whatever that was. Right. And how did I feel in the moment? I was feeling really down and I really wanted that. What did I want that food to do? Just give me some reprieed. Give me a break. And I deserve it. Okay, fine. And then how do I feel now? Now I feel full of gilts. I feel like poop. I feel bloated. I feel gross. Okay. Is there a different?
Starting point is 00:55:11 different choice I could have made. And sometimes it's in the moment, no. I was just so broken that I, so then it's like, let's deal with these feelings, right? There's nothing you could have done. Let's, is there something I can do about the feelings or managing my feelings that led to that moment, right? Or if could I, how would I felt if I would have called a friend? It'd just gone to bed. That would have been good. Had a bath. Fine. Had some tea. Read a book. Oh, that would have been nice. Do I have a book to read? No.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Let me go to the store today and buy a book. Right? So a lot of it is just understanding, before you try to put a band-aid on it and fix it, understanding what's happening in the first place. And sometimes you can't do that in the moment. So this is where you want to take that time and be like, what was that about?
Starting point is 00:56:01 Like, why was I eating my feelings? So is there anything I actually helped to do it to manage those emotions? And then this is that kind of my new go-to behavior. So rather than the food being the reward, which isn't really rewarding and isn't really bringing you peace, what else can you do? Right? So that's kind of like talking it out. In terms of the feeling, name it to tame it, like, what is the feeling?
Starting point is 00:56:20 What is happening? You know, if you're, if you're, if you, let's say you're lonely and you are just not happy with your life. Can you join a pickleball, go join a pickleball thing at night? Right? Like what are, pull up the big guns? What can I do to change my routine? Right?
Starting point is 00:56:38 Maybe I can go play pickleball. up, I'll hate it, I don't want to go, but you'll get there and you'll love it and it'll be great and it'll be fulfilling. Like, what are some of the big things? What are the things you're not doing that will have an impact, right? But the first part of that is thinking about it. The first part of that is self-awareness. Self-awareness.
Starting point is 00:57:02 Yeah, what are your top tips? So I know that was kind of a lot and maybe didn't give you like a specific thing to do. It would be to make sure you're also giving your body what it needs throughout the day. Like that's the big part, right? Like make sure you're drinking your water. Make sure you're eating your foods throughout the day. Make sure you're doing things to manage your stress. Get better safe.
Starting point is 00:57:23 Like those are the daily things that tend to make you feel stronger physically and mentally so that when you're dealing with emotion or at the end of the day. One, you know that you actually ate enough. Two, you've been taking time for yourself. And then you can see more clearly. Hopefully that helps. Thank you. go. Okay, wow, I went really long today. I broke my own rules. I don't care. I'm happy that
Starting point is 00:57:48 you're here. Maybe I'm trying to get all my time in this week because on Wednesday I'm going to be off for a couple of weeks.
