Four feet six inches, who was described as soft-spoken and warm. Benelan grew up in a home where
money was always tight. Those who knew her said she took on adult responsibilities early in life.
She was seen as a hardworking and dependable young woman, someone her family leaned on for support.
Despite her humble upbringing, Benelin managed to earn a college degree as a teenager.
After graduating, she began working as a caregiver and later sold items online, including car vacuums to help her family financially.
In July of 2018, Benelan married Lexington Lex Burke, a British lawyer living on Samar Island, which is located about an hour south by
from the capital city of Manila.
They had met online and soon after, they welcomed their daughter, Gelica, on August 20th, 2018.
Soon, the couple made the decision to move to the UK, and Benelan and her daughter arrived in
Bristol with Lex on Jelika's first birthday.
However, things changed quickly.
By the end of 2019, the marriage had ended, and Benelan was living on her own with Jellica
in Kingswood, a town situated three miles northeast of Bristol.
She told her sister Shayla that she finally felt free and different.
Benelan balanced a part-time job at a care home as well as an online sales gig.
She never lost touch with her family in the Philippines and called them every single day.
Locally, she Angelica became familiar faces in a mom's group based in Bath where the other mothers often helped out with child care and invited them to social events.
One woman from the Mums and Bath Facebook group, Vicky Whip, remembered Benelan fondly, calling her,
the sweetest person I've ever met.
She described Jellica as full of energy, bursting with personality.
Vicky also spoke about Benelan's hopes for a better life in the UK,
even though she missed her family deeply.
In early 2021, Benelin started chatting with someone through a dating platform called Filipino Cupid.
That man was Andrew Innes, born in June of 1970 on a military base in Germany.
Not much is known about his early life except for that he went to,
Alva Academy and later attended the University of Aberdeen. Eventually, he found work in Dundee,
building a career in tech and gaming. He also spent time in public relations, but details like
his job titles or employers were never officially confirmed. At one point, Andrew moved to Japan
with his wife and children. He continued working while living abroad, but the marriage fell apart
and came to an end. In 2019, Andrew was deported back to Scotland. No public information
explains what caused the departure from Japan or how the separation happened.
What can be said is that Andrew carried serious bitterness towards his former partners,
and his social media activity was filled with strange and erratic posts.
After returning to the UK, he mostly kept to himself.
Neighbors later described him as isolated, unapproachable, and withdrawn.
Around this time, he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease,
an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy,
tissue in the digestive tract.
He was also diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Even while dealing with health issues and rarely socializing in person, Andrew was constantly
online.
Authorities later found that he had created over 30 different dating accounts, nearly all
focused on sites that matched men with Filipino women.
He even made spreadsheets where he rated women based on things like age, weight, and whether
they were mothers.
His intentions were disturbingly specific.
He was searching for a woman in her 20s who had a young daughter.
That's when his attention locked onto Benelin.
When they began talking, Andrew pitched her a job offer in Dundee, Scotland as a community
relations manager, promising a £1,000 monthly salary.
Benelan declined saying that she could manage the job from where she lived.
He also asked her to send private photos which she refused.
In the last week of February 2021, Andrew decided to say,
decided he would drive down to meet her. He made the roughly 440 mile trip from Dundee to
Kingswood in the UK while the country was still on lockdown during the pandemic.
Benel and Angelica agreed to go back with him to Dundee for what was supposed to be a weekend
visit. But three days before they met, Andrews' internet search history revealed terms like
what is chloroform used for, and instructions on how to build hidden storage in the floor.
According to her sister Shayla, Benelan had only agreed to the visit because she felt bad that
Andrew had traveled so far, and she was also a little curious about what Scotland was like.
They didn't bring any bags for an overnight stay, just a few light items suggesting they
thought it would only be a short trip.
On February 18, 2021, Benelin, Jellica, and another young girl got into Andrew's car and began
the long drive north.
That young girl's name has been kept out of the public domain due to her being a surviving
minor, rightfully so, and due to the case details that we'll share with you as the story progresses.
The following day, the four were seen exploring Dundee. They visited places like Camperdowne Park
in the V&A Dundee Museum, and during the car ride, Benelan facetime her sister Shayla. From what
Shayla could tell, Benelan truly believed she was meeting a serious friend, maybe even a future husband.
Shayla described Andrew as a tall, slim man with thinning hair who gave the impression of being polite,
and professional. He claimed he had both children and grandchildren living in Dundee, which helped
earn their trust. Benelan also told Shayla that Andrew seemed gentle and thoughtful. But what neither of
them knew was that Andrew had carefully planned all of this and deliberately targeted Benelan.
Shayla didn't suspect anything either. She remembered encouraging her sister saying,
maybe this time things would work out for her. On that drive, she even spoke to Andrew and said hello
and made a few lighthearted jokes with him.
Once Benalyn arrived at Andrew's house,
she gave Shayla a virtual tour over FaceTime.
Andrew lived in a rental home on Trune Avenue,
located in Dundee's Kirkton neighborhood.
But things quickly took a much darker turn.
Andrew was not the gentle and thoughtful man
that he had portrayed to Shayla.
While Benelan was cooking in the kitchen,
Andrew struck her in the head multiple times with a hammer.
After that, he walked to his office,
and grabbed a long knife that he referred to as a samurai sword, went back into the kitchen,
and stabbed her. He also hit her again with a hammer and used the handle of the blade to beat
her further. Once she was dead, he wrapped her body in a trash bag, covered it with a tarp and
a blanket, and then placed her beneath the kitchen floor. After killing Benelin, he kept
Jellica alive for three days, during which he essayed her. Eventually, he, he wasaed. Eventually, he
He killed the child.
He wrapped her body in a trash bag and buried her alongside her mother.
Afterwards, he lied to the other child,
telling her that Benelin and Jellica were in the hospital,
which is why they weren't around.
When Monday came around, Shaila tried contacting her sister but got no response.
On February 22nd, Andrew messaged Shaila to say that Benelan,
Angelica and the other girl had left for Glasgow.

With a new man she had supposedly met online,
he said he was a teacher and that they were...
safe with him. He told Shayla that there was nothing to worry about. He added that Benelan had stayed with
him to avoid her ex. He was supposedly threatening to take Jellica away and have Benelan deported.
He said she had decided to lay low in Glasgow and that he had told her to get rid of her phone.
When Shayla asked to speak directly to her sister, Andrew brushed it off,
saying she would likely get in touch once everything settled down. Desperate. She was
Shayla finally messaged him asking, sir, can you tell me if my sister is alive?
But instead of giving a real direct answer, he replied with, Scotland's a peaceful place.
We don't really deal with much crime here. Don't worry, I'm sure she's safe.
Shayla tried again four days later. This time, Andrew told Shayla that a man from Glasgow had reached
out to him claiming Benel and Angelica were settling into their new life. He said,
Benelan would contact her when she feels it's safe, and added that she was thankful to have met
someone kind and relieved her daughter wasn't being taken from her. He told Shayla he wanted to leave
the situation behind and, in his words, draw a line under this. Then he said he planned to erase
everything from his devices, not just for himself, but to make sure the police couldn't trace
Benelin through him. When Shayla asked him to send a current video of Benelan, he instead sent an older
one of her. She ended the chat
with a polite goodbye and he responded
with maybe one day
once everything settles.

...were officially reported missing when they didn't show up for a planned appointment.
By March 3rd, the police began their search. Shela later shared that her family had already
started worrying after they lost contact with Benelin. She mentioned a strange dream her older
brother had. In it, he was looking through photos of Benelan Angelica, but some of the faces appeared
clear while others were blurred. That's when their concern turned to fear. Avon and Somerset police
joined the investigation, and by 3.20 p.m. on March 5th, officers in Dundee were on Trune
Avenue. Authorities from England believe someone matching Benelan's description had been seen
this city earlier that week. At the same time, Andrew was seen on supermarket CCTV and
Bristol. Police had tracked the car that made the journey from Dundee to Bristol and back during the
lockdown, which brought them straight to his doorstep. When officers arrived, they saw the same car in
his driveway and knocked on the door. Andrew admitted he had driven Benelin and the children to Dundee,
but claimed they had left for Glasgow. He initially refused to let them in, saying he was isolating
and that his daughter had just come out of the bath. But when officers spotted a girl inside,
fully dressed in standing, they insisted.
Inside the home, things were chaotic.
Kitchen doors were missing.
Pots were scattered along the staircase,
and the kitchen floor had freshly laid tiles that seemed rushed.
One officer pulled the girl aside.
She quietly told them she wasn't his daughter.
When they asked Andrew again about Benelin,
his answer was cold.
He said,
I killed her.
She's under the floor.
We got into a fight and I killed her.
When asked about Jellica's whereabouts, he replied, under the floor with mum, I couldn't look after a child. The child was screaming. Detective Chief Inspector Smith later stated that the officer's quick actions that day likely saved the child's life.
Andrew was arrested and taken in for questioning. Detective Smith described Andrew as completely detached, showing no reaction in acting cold and callous. He told officers the bodies were hidden about three to four feet beneath.
the kitchen floor encased in layers of concrete.
When Detective Constable Paul Hardy asked Andrew about the amount of time that had passed
since he buried Benelin under the floor, here's what he had to say.
Last Friday, she came up.
We were going to spend the weekend together.
I saw she had been chatting to about 50 men on the phone.
It was either Monday or Tuesday.
It took me a while to get through the concrete.
Despite his prior search history, Andrew was completely insistent that he had not planned
the murder prior to meeting her. According to him, they got into a fight and, in his words,
she came at me and I fought back and now she's dead. There was no premeditation. She came at me with a
sushi knife. Once Andrew was in custody and the child was safe, the investigation turned to his
house on Trune Avenue. After two weeks of carefully going through the property, police found two
bodies buried beneath the kitchen floor wrapped in trash bags. The post-mortem revealed deep
stab wounds in Benelan's chest along with serious injuries to her head. Her cause of death was a mix of
blunt force trauma and internal bleeding. Forensic analysis confirmed she had been repeatedly struck
with a hammer. Jellica, who was just two years old, had been suffocated. The autopsy showed clear
signs of pressure on her mouth and neck. Pathologists concluded she died from asphyxiation.
Investigators also found proof that Jellica and the other young girl in the home had been essayed by Andrew.
Forensic expert Barry Mitchell stated that Jellica's body carried Andrew's DNA and both were linked to a used costume found in the trash.
DNA from the second child appeared on a pair of black furry handcuffs.
Her saliva was also found on a sock.
Andrew was charged with the murders of Benelin and Jellica along with multiple charges of essay
and obstruction of justice.
Almost two years later in January and February of 2023,
Andrew stood trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Benelan's family included Shayla and her father Benedito.
They flew in from the Philippines.
Jellica's father, Lex, also attended the proceedings.
During the trial, jurors listened to a recording of the young girl.

Who had been at the house.
In the video, she said, I should have saved them,
but I didn't know what was happening.
She explained they had been playing hide-and-seek.
Asked about Jellica,
she recalled seeing Andrew close the bathroom door on her and said,
so it must be in the bathroom.
She also told them Andrew had used a,
heavy hammer on Benelin. She remembered trying to call the police, but being too terrified to speak.
During her time in the house, the girl said that she was gagged, handcuffed, and afterwards he would
give her money sometimes, once, giving her exactly two pounds and ten pence. She described
being trapped. Andrew had tied a rope from one door to another so she couldn't get out. He would only
unlock it when he returned. Told him she wanted to go with him, hoping it would be her only chance to
skate. Andrew denied all of the girl's accusations. He insisted, I never touched the girl. The DNA
told a different story. In addition, she also tested positive for chlamydia, and so did Andrew.
Andrew confessed to killing them both, but argued that it was not murder. He claimed he was not
fully in control of his actions. And Andrew couldn't keep his story straight. First, he said it was
self-defense, that Benelin somehow attacked him out of the blue with a knife. And he
blamed it on him hearing voices. After that, it was steroids. Finally, he claimed she reminded him
of two women from his past who would hurt him. We don't know exactly what the real story is and we may
never know. He told the court that while Benelan was cooking in his kitchen, she suddenly looked like
a combination of his ex-wife and former girlfriend. That moment, allegedly, he said it brought
back everything he believed they had done to anger him. He claimed it was overwhelming in it.
made him what he described as apocalypticly angry.
Later, while being questioned by his lawyer, Brian McConachy,
Andrew confessed he killed Jellica three days after Benelin.
He claimed that they had been playing hide-and-seek,
and Jelika ran towards an electrical transformer.
He told the court,
if she had touched the wire, she would have exploded.
I had to stop her.
She kept trying to get it.
She wanted to go to her mom.
I was detached from reality.
I had no emotional response.
It seemed logical to me to put her with her mom.
You heard that correctly.
Jellica wanted her mother.
Andrew thought the best thing to do
was to kill her and hide her in the floorboards beside her mother.
And asked to explain, he blamed the steroids again,
insisting that they had driven him insane.
The court heard he had been taking them for a medical condition
and hadn't slept properly during that period.
He denied any premeditation and even calls,
the hammer a bad weapon of choice, saying that if he had actually planned the attack,
that it would have looked very different. Prosecutors laid out the forensic findings,
and Lord Beckett, the judge, told the jury that there was no real evidence backing Andrew's
claims of insanity or reduced responsibility.

The trial ran for five days, but paused briefly on day two,
after the defense raised an issue about fairness outside the jury's hearing.
That pause was linked to Andrew's hunger strike while in jail.
Because he refused solid food, prison staff had to blend all of his meals.
Eventually, he stopped eating all together and then was placed on watch.
Under the prison's Talk to Me Protocol, guards had to check on him every hour through the night.
They would turn on his lights, open the hatch, and speak to him to confirm that he was still of this earth and then leave.
Even though Andrew complained, the checks continued.
His sister even contacted the prison staff to express concern.
The defense claimed that Andrew wasn't getting any sleep,
especially after being transferred from Perth prison early in the morning.
There were concerns he might doze off in court
in that the jury would notice Andrew's condition.
He looked pale, drained,
and was already yawning when they were playing the 90 minutes of recorded testimony
from the child he kidnapped and assaulted.
After the judge offered a possible fix,
Prosecutor Alex Prentice agreed to bring it up with the prison governor.
When court resumed, Lord Beckett spoke directly to the jury,
letting them know that Andrew hadn't been sleeping properly and might appear tired,
but that this shouldn't be taken as a sign of disrespect.
It was also revealed that while behind bars,
Andrew had tried to castrate himself using cable ties.
When the pain got too much and he feared that his balls might actually fall off,
He asked the prison staff to finish the job.
They refused.
The jury was also shown unsettling photos.
One showed the small sleeping space that Andrew had set up for Jellica in his living room.
Another showed the hole in the kitchen floor where both bodies were later discovered.
It came out in court that Andrew had purchased the hammer in several bags of cement from a local B&Q store,
which is the UK equivalent to a Lowe's or Home Depot in the States.
After less than three hours of discussion, the jury returned a unanimous verdict.
Andrew was guilty of both murders.
On Monday, February 6, 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 36 years.
The judge stated clearly that these were calculated in especially violent killings.
Andrew cried as Lord Beckett gave the mandatory sentence.
Both the police and prosecution welcomed the decision.
Detective Chief Inspector Graham Smith shared the following thoughts.
The murders of Benelyn Burke and her two-year-old daughter, Jellica, have shocked and appalled us all.
Today, our thoughts are very much with their family and friends, including those relatives who traveled from the Philippines for this trial.
This was a heroin investigation which deeply affected everyone involved.
Police, Scotland officers and staff, forensic scientists, external anthropology experts, and colleagues from
Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Avon and Somerset Police and the National Crime Agency.
Everyone showed commitment and professionalism in the face of the most appalling circumstances
to secure justice for Benel and Angelica. In almost 30 years of policing, the depravity shown by
Andrew Innes was beyond anything I or colleagues had witnessed before. Not only did he callously
take the lives of a young mother and an innocent child. He'd then sent out to escape justice by
burying their bodies beneath his kitchen floor. His actions showed no regard for human life or for the
suffering and anguish he brought to their loved ones. I want to end by thanking Benelan Angelica's family
for the courage they have shown throughout what has been an unimaginable ordeal. And I hope that this
conviction helps to bring them some degree of closure. I mean, the depravity in this case that Andrew
Innes has shown is second to none. Myself or any of the team have never experienced and hopefully never will
experience anything of the like again. Some of the officers are still affected by this to this day
and are seeking support from it. They're traumatized and it's an inquiry that they'll never forget.
Andrew was currently locked up in a high security prison in Scotland. So far, none of his appeals have
succeeded. Detective Smith shared that agents from the National Crime Agency had called the case
one of the most significant of its kind in recent years. But for him, the priority was always held
helping Benelan Angelica's family through the aftermath.
Those who knew Benelan want her remembered as a caring mother who moved the UK hoping to give
her daughter a better life.
The impact on Benelan Angelica's family and community was profound.
They released a public statement that read,
Benelin was the hope and light of our family.
That light has been cruelly snuffed out.
We cannot drive from our minds what happened to her and what happened to Jellica,
or the fear they must have felt after experiencing violence.
violence from Andrew. A big part of our family has been torn from us. She'll never see Benel and
Angelica again. She'll never know our beloved Angelica or ever see her grow up. There is nothing
that can restore Benel and Angelica to us. The jury's guilty verdict for murder provides some
comfort to our family and friends and brings justice for Benelin Angelica. Benedito later opened up
about how he found out what happened to his daughter and granddaughter. He said it was the Scottish
police who called and told him both Benelan and Jellica had been murdered in Dundee. He described the
loss as something he couldn't wrap his head around. Losing his daughter and granddaughter at the
same time was more pain than he thought a person could feel. He kept asking himself why it happened.
What had either of them ever done to deserve such a fate? He said the entire family was devastated.
They had loved Benelin deeply and no one knew how to put their grief into words.
All he could say was that everything ached.
When asked about Andrew, he didn't hold back.
He said the man was disgusting.
He took the life of someone kind and gentle and that Jellica was just a baby, completely innocent.
What made it worse, he said, was not understanding how anyone could even think to do that to a child.
He didn't think a prison sentence was enough for Andrew.
In his mind, he deserved the death penalty.
Shaila, too, remembered the moment she found out.
so that left her completely blank.
She didn't think.
She couldn't eat.
She couldn't function.
When police told them the bodies had been found,
she said it didn't seem real.
It wasn't until they received DNA confirmation
that she truly believed it.
She said there was one question
she would ask Andrew if she could.
How could he do something like that
to such a sweet, innocent baby?
In her eyes,
no sane person could commit such an act of cruelty.
She called him evil
and said he should be held responsible,
for every part of it. She also shared what she missed the most, singing with Benelan, doing
karaoke together, walking through parks and shopping at the mall. All those little moments were now
just memories. She said the loss of those simple things hurt more than she ever could explain.
That's all I want to see. If you could please help me, we wish for justice for my sister.
because the truth is
it's hard to lose a sibling,
a loved one.
Do you know that feeling
when you can't sleep,
that feeling when you miss her?
A person's life is priceless.
It can't be bought with money.
Your memories, your relationship,
those things.
Remembering her, talking to her every day.
UK's Filipino community also grieved.
A London-based organization called the Canlangen Philippino Consortium called for justice
and said that the case was a tragic reminder that predators target vulnerable women.
The organization supports around 200,000 Filipinos living within the UK,
including those impacted by family violence.
When asked about Benelan's case, a spokesperson from the organization told reporters,
and I quote,
It is a white, older man, murdering a young Filipino woman in her child.
It fits into a broader context of violence against East Asian or Southeast Asian migrant women,
adding, there is also a more general presence of hypersexualization and exotification of East Asian or Southeast Asian women.
In Bristol, friends gathered for a vigil on Brandon Hill near Cabot Tower.
They place flowers, candles, and teddy bears on a red blanket and tied white balloons to
a tree with handwritten notes, one of which read, you are loved, you are missed, you are remembered.
Benelin Angelica's ashes were returned to the Philippines, where her family members held a
makeshift memorial. According to her sister Shayla, their ashes were returned in a cardboard box
wrapped in plastic, and the family had to mourn their loss in a shell of their ramshackle house
in the shanty towns of Cazon City. On June 7, 2021,
Just days before they were due to pick up Benel and Angelica's ashes at the airport, a fire broke out.
According to Shayla, and I quote, it was terrible.
It was really very painful and very difficult for us to think about how and where we can put her to commemorate her and to say prayers.
We had no lights or doors or windows or anything.
We just made a shelter where we put some chairs and candles and found a table to place her and put her photographs.
We prayed together and remembered her, but it wasn't a proper funeral.
It is not what we want for her, but we have nothing.
