Starting point is 00:00:00 Giselle Milan Glover was a beautiful young girl born to parents DJ and Kelsey Glover. Originally from Virginia, she and her family were living in central Florida. She also had an older brother. As of the date of this recording in November of 2024, she was 14 years old. Giselle had dark curly hair, brown eyes, and a kind smile. Pictures posted to her father's social media show a little girl that was clearly adored. She always was well-dressed, her hair neatly styled, the smile on her face. On September 16, 2019, DJ made the following post, wishing his little girl
Starting point is 00:00:38 a happy birthday. It read, Happy 9th birthday to my beautiful princess, Miss Giselle Milan Glover. I have never met a stronger little girl. I watch her fight day in and day out with her health, and has never given up or made excuses. I'm so proud of my baby girl who decides to read books in her spare time just because and also uses big words that the whole family has to Google, lull. Happy ninth birthday, senorita. Enjoy your day. Daddy loves you. The health struggles that DJ outlined are ones that hundreds of millions of people around
Starting point is 00:01:13 the world have to deal with on a daily basis. Jazell had type 1 diabetes, which required her to receive insulin via a pump. You may have heard of this in our Alex Radita episode. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body's immune system destroys the pancreas's ability to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body convert blood sugar into energy. Without insulin, blood sugar builds up in the bloodstream, which can lead to serious health problems.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Some of these complications can include, but are not limited to, eye problems, including cataracts and blindness, skin and foot infections, nerve damage, which can cause pain, tinkling, numbness, and itching, kidney disease, a weakened immune system, heart attack, stroke, or death. There's no known cure for type 1 diabetes, but it can be managed with insulin therapy, regular blood sugar monitoring, diet and exercise. It's unclear whether or not the parents were together at the time of our story, as news articles have indicated that Kelsey and Giselle lived with a roommate in Pointe Siano, Florida. Other reports describe the roommate as Giselle's live-in caregiver. Either way, DJ's social media lists him as married, and on September 5th, 2022, he made a post of a post-a
Starting point is 00:02:25 celebrating 13 years of marriage to Kelsey. His page is also full of pictures of the couple posing happily for the camera. According to some reports, Kelsey, who was 35 at the time of our story, had no known criminal history and had once worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office as a CPS investigator trainee. Her co-workers described her as a very kind and sweet person. However, according to Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, Kelsey had a prior record for assaulting DJ who later secured what the sheriff described as a protective injunction against her. This could explain why Kelsey was living with a roommate. Wednesday, November 20th, 20th, 24 should have been like any normal day at 1148 Camborn Drive in Poitiana. It was overcasts with
Starting point is 00:03:14 temperatures reaching a high of 81 degrees. Under normal circumstances, Giselle would have probably been excited for Thanksgiving and looking ahead to Christmas. These were not normal circumstances. Teenage girl had fallen ill. He was weak and had a difficult time eating and drinking water. Anything she could get down just came right back up. According to news reports, an argument ensued between Kelsey and her roommate over the fact that Kelsey refused to give Giselle her insulin or seek any sort of medical care for her daughter. Some sources have indicated that Kelsey actually ripped her insulin pump from her body. Allegedly, Kelsey had been keeping a bedridden Giselle in the master bedroom and have been playing loud music to drown out her daughter's cries for
Starting point is 00:03:59 help. At some point in our story, the argument made its way to the bathroom where the mother asked her roommate for assistance with bathing Giselle. It was then that Kelsey grabbed her daughter by the hair and held her head underwater inside of the bathtub. When the roommate tried to intervene, Kelsey wielded a hammer and swung it at the woman, threatening her life. Being helpless and afraid for her own life, the roommate called 911. When authorities arrived, the violent attack was still unfolding before them. According to Sheriff Marcos Lopez, they tried to stop her but were not successful. Eventually, Ms. Glover began attacking and chasing these witnesses around the house with a hammer, which led them to also call 911. Deputies wrestled the hammer
Starting point is 00:04:41 from Kelsey's hands and promptly arrested her. According to reports, the deputies observed several holes in the door that were consistent with the hammer striking the door. That evening, Kelsey's perp walk was captured by news reporters. In the footage, she smiles at the camera seemingly proud of her actions. Yeah. Morning in Point Sienna. What happened this morning? What happened this morning? Come on. Keep moving. Anything you want to say right now? Lying it. It should be noted that there was another child present in the home at the time of the attack,
Starting point is 00:06:54 but it's unclear whether or not it was Giselle's older brother. 14-year-old was located in the home's upstairs bathroom. She was rushed to the emergency room, but sadly she was pronounced dead. We're in a security expert, Dave Benson. Depriving a sick child from their needed medication, not providing sustenance, refusing to get medical treatment are all indications of gross negligence, if not intentional. Meanwhile, Sheriff Lopez held a press conference alerting the public to what had happened. Ready. Thanks a great. Ready. All right. Welcome, everyone. Sheriff Lopez with the Osceola County
Starting point is 00:07:30 Sheriff's Office. Just want to tell the public about a tragic case that happened earlier today, November 20th, 2024. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office was notified early this morning about a violent incident that happened at a house in Pointeania at 1148 Cambourne Drive. Deputies responded after receiving calls about an armed disturbance. Deputies responded immediately and got to the house as a disturbance was still taking place. Inside the home, deputies apprehended the suspect of this investigation, Ms. Kelsey Glover. Deputies then spoke to witnesses who were also at the residence and learned that Ms. Glover, Ms. Glover's 14-year-old daughter was upstairs in the bathroom and unresponsive. Witnesses also told deputies that they saw Ms. Glover holding her 14-year-old daughter, was upstairs in the bathroom and unresponsive. Witnesses also told deputies that they saw Ms. Glover holding her 14-year-old daughter. daughter's head underwater in the bathtub, and they tried to stop her, but were not successful. Eventually, Ms. Glover began attacking and chasing these witnesses around the house with a hammer, which led them to call also 911. The 14-year-old girl was transported to a hospital, but she was declared deceased shortly after arriving.
Starting point is 00:08:40 At this time, we're still waiting on a report from the medical examiner's office, so it cannot confirm exactly how the girl passed away. We're launching a full homicide investigation that will be concluded soon. Today the mother is being arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery charges. It's a dark day when things like this happened. A 14-year-old girl's name was Gissel Blubber. What happened to her is unimaginable, and we are determined to get justice for Giselle. I want to thank the homicide detectives who've been working relentlessly since this incident.
Starting point is 00:09:17 occurred to make sure we're putting a good case packet together for prosecution to turn over the state. On November 20th, 2024, a chained Kelsey attended a short pretrial detention hearing at a courthouse in Kissimmee. Her next hearing is scheduled for December 4th of 2024. As this episode will likely be released after that date, we'll keep an eye out for any relevant updates as they become available. As with any case that's not gone to trial, Kelsey Glover is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. As we mentioned prior, she's currently facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery for attacking her roommate. Those charges could be upgraded to premeditated murder once the medical examiner releases Giselle's official cause and manner of
Starting point is 00:10:05 death. She's currently being held without bail at the Osceola County Jail. According to Attorney Albert Yanfa, who shared his opinion with Fox 35 Orlando, this case is going to be entirely about Glover's mental health, and that's going to be the focus of everything. On November 25th, community members held a vigil in honor of Giselle Glover. Candles in hand, they shared in each other's grief, remembering a young girl who had her whole life ahead of her. According to vigil organizer Betsy Martinez, I just couldn't imagine if it were one of mine. However, would feel. This is a very united community. Things like that should not be happening here. Even though Betsy didn't know the Glover family, she felt that as a mom, she had a duty to act.
Starting point is 00:10:53 She said, I don't want to be in a position like this ever again in this community. And if you're out there and you see something that isn't right, try to get some help. This could have been avoided. Now, if this story sounds somewhat eerily familiar, that's because it has a lot of parallels to the case of Alex Redito, which we covered earlier this year. He was a Romanian boy who immigrated to Canada along with his parents and many siblings. It was described as a sweet-natured little boy with a bright smile, and when he was just two years old, he suffered a medical crisis that landed him in the emergency room of Surrey Memorial Hospital in British Columbia. Alex was suffering from belly pain, he was vomiting, and he was extremely thirsty. He had dark circles under his eyes and exhibited an
Starting point is 00:11:36 altered state of consciousness. After observing the distinct fruity smell of ketones on Alex his breath, the subsequent lab results came as no shock to anyone. Well, Alex was suffering from type 1 diabetes. Now, as we mentioned previously, type 1 diabetes is treatable. But people living with the disease must take insulin via syringe, pen, needle, or a pump. Type 1 never goes away. There's no cure for it. And those affected by it must take insulin every day for the rest of their lives.
Starting point is 00:12:05 With proper treatment, those with type 1 diabetes can live long lives. But without treatment, death is unresolved. unfortunately unavoidable. Sadly for Alex, his parents, Rodica and Emil, had other plans for their son. Rodica insisted that the diagnosis was incorrect in that she and God were going to prove all the doctors wrong. This wasn't even the first time that the couple had found themselves challenging doctors and caseworkers, resulting in deadly consequences.
Starting point is 00:12:32 In 1991, while living in Ontario, the Redidas had a three-and-a-half-month-old daughter who died without any medical care. According to the coroner's report, the Redidas told the investigation, they were new to the country arriving in 1990 and didn't realize there was health care available to them. As a family immigrated to Canada in the 80s years before their baby died, it's hard to believe they remained ignorant for so long. In addition, the couple had a baby boy born in the 90s that was born premature and required oxygen. Rodica refused the life-saving treatment so adamantly that the Children's Aid Society had to temporarily cease custody of the child. At five and a half months old, the same child developed a seizure disorder, and Rotoica,
Starting point is 00:13:11 again rejected the advice of the doctors, refusing to give him the prescribed anti-seizure medication. A little boy was taken into custody and not returned until the parents agreed to comply with doctor's orders. Over the years, Alex would return to the emergency room with diabetic ketoacidosis, late-stage malnutrition and hypoglycemia, multiple organ failure of pneumonia, and a staff infection among others. Eventually, he was placed in the care of a foster mother named Vera Boyoko, who herself was a type 1 diabetic with 30 years experience in child welfare. This should have been, Alex's fairy tale ending. Called his foster parent, Grandma Vera, and appeared to care for her. Two attended church together, went to regular doctor's appointments to manage his diabetes.
Starting point is 00:13:51 He was enrolled in school for the first time, and he loved going to school. He learned how to poke his finger and do his own blood sugar tests. He spent time playing with Vera's granddaughter going swimming in a kiddie pool and drawing pictures, but sadly, Alex was returned to the Redita home in January of 2005, and all of the progress he made in Grandma Vera's home was lost. Eelan Rodica stopped managing Alex's diabetes, pulled him out of in-person classes, and moved him 600 miles away to Alberta. Alex never saw a doctor to manage his diabetes again. On May 7, 2013, just after 10 p.m., Alberta EMS responded to a 911 call regarding a teenage boy who was not breathing.
Starting point is 00:14:27 On arrival, they found Alex in a bed upstairs in his parents' room. It was a skeleton, so emaciated that paramedics described him as mummified. He had black necrotic sores on his face. One of which was so deep that she could see his jawbone. Paramedic estimated his waistline to be three inches. Alex was wearing a yellow t-shirt with blue sleeves and a diaper. His eyes were open. It was cold to the touch, and he had no pulse.
Starting point is 00:14:51 It was quickly clear. He could not be revived. Alex Radita was pronounced dead at the scene at just 15 years old. Medical neglect can have serious consequences, including immediate danger of death, disfigurement, or bodily injury. In 2016, medical neglects. accounted for 5.7% of all child fatalities due to child maltreatment. This is why we always tell you to say something if you see something.
Starting point is 00:15:19 You don't need to be a teacher, a medical provider, or a member of law enforcement to do so. Had someone picked up the phone and called 911 for both Alex and Giselle before it was too late? It's possible they'd still be with us today. DJ Glover started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds for Giselle's funeral and to transport her body back to their hometown in Virginia. As of the date of this recording, the fundraiser has been backed by 247 donations and has raised a total of $17,665, surpassing its goal of 15,000. We'll have a link to that GoFundMe in our description, as well as a link to the American Diabetes Association. DJ also shared a final letter to his daughter, which read,
Starting point is 00:16:02 To Daddy's Princess, I write this letter to you with tears in my eyes and a heart heavy with the weight of the loss we all feel. Words can't truly capture the emptiness that fills every corner of our lives without you. From the moment you were born, you were the strongest soldier God ever created. You never let your type 1 diabetes define you or hold you back. Instead, you turned it into something that inspired us all, showing us how to take life's challenges and turn them into stepping stones. I have never met a girl as intelligent as you. The way you use those big words, always leaving us to Google them filled us with awe. We never knew where you picked up such an incredible vocabulary, but it made us proud every single time. You were more than just smart, though you were beautiful
Starting point is 00:16:47 inside and out. Your soul was pure, and your heart was full of love. You always cared so deeply about others, always the first to ask, are you okay, or do you need anything? You had a way of making everyone around you feel special. I will forever cherish the love you had for your brother, the joy you found in teasing him, the way you two would plot together to get what you wanted. And we all knew it was hard to say no to Princess Giselle. There's so much I'll never get to do with you. Things I had dreamed of like buying your first car, spending my whole check on your prom dress, walking you down the aisle and sharing that first father-daughter dance.
Starting point is 00:17:27 But I hold tight to the memories we did make. I take comfort in knowing you were loved beyond measure. You were a child of God, and I find time. peace and knowing that you no longer suffer. You can now dance and sing in his presence, just as your heart always deserved. Until we meet again, my sweet Princess Giselle, know that we all love you, always and forever. God bless you with all my love, Daddy.
