Starting point is 00:00:00 Coming up on TMS, then you shall have no smell, no logic, and no lieutenant y'ar! A fistful of crazons and a face full of cologne. There's a lot we can learn from Red Dwarf. What do you expect me to smell and taste in bed? Lego Hobbs and Shaw? Say Columbia House! Say Columbia House! Don't give what's his nugget an award. A myriad of smelly gels.
Starting point is 00:00:22 Did your tooth just fall out? aging Tyler Darden, you may have COVID. The spit goes in the sack butt. I don't like clothes. with CDs. He's nothing like the Klegs I knew. Dark murdery kind. Tom's Tech Time.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Recommendals and more on this episode of the Morning Stream. Hello, everyone. Thanks for coming to our little fashion show. You'll be glad to know that the basketball team is $112 richer because you came. The men with stick is dear. And then men, look at Stickman. The morning stream. Circuits don't fail me now.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Good morning, everyone. Welcome back to TMS. It is the morning stream for Wednesday, February 24th, 2021. I'm Scott Johnson. That guy right there is longtime podcaster and music-oficionado, Brian Ibbett. Thank you, Scott. Yes, it's really great to be here. Hall of Fame podcaster, Brian, I'm here with Hall of Fame podcaster Scott Johnson.
Starting point is 00:01:35 That's right. Hall of Famers, pod faders, what else are we? Actually, you know what? I think we can probably safely say, this is the only podcast hosted by two Hall of Fame podcasters. I think that probably is fair to say. When they gave it to Adam Curry, they didn't give it to what's his nugget. No. No, look at us.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Look at this. Yeah. You get twice the number of Hall of Fame podcasters in this show. Then you do with no agenda. Take that. Yeah. Or geek. Geek.
Starting point is 00:02:11 What is it? Labor of Love. Oh, Todd Cochran's Geek Show. Labor of Love anymore. I mean, do he give himself? Well, Keith and the girl got nominated at the same time. I think that's a Keith and the Girl.
Starting point is 00:02:26 It's a Keith and the Girl Hall of Fame podcast. That's one award. That's one award. for the couple they share it they held it they held it together yeah there's no scott and brian award come on now we got them individually two to one baby we that's right exactly all right well that's it geek news central that's it geek news central there you have it sorry sorry i meant to do that with the two fingers not that with the two fingers yeah get it straight will you get that this is what i learned from red dwarf oh yeah well look there's a lot we can learn from red dwarf and
Starting point is 00:02:54 that was one of that in the phrase smeghead yeah and an h on your head that's another good way to do things that's right that's right For holograms. Yeah, there you go. So we got stuff to do, and I'm in a really good mood despite the fact that I think I caught a minor head cold from the boy. He was here the other day, and when he got here, he was fine. In fact, he slipped over on Friday night, and he was fine all night, and then the next
Starting point is 00:03:20 morning he just seemed a little sniffly, and by about noon. I mean, it went quick. By about noon, he was just kind of this miserable little red-eyed-looking stuffed-up mess. and then by the next day he was 100% fine again so it was a short little thing and I was like
Starting point is 00:03:33 oh hope we don't catch that well while he was here I hugged on him a lot he and I cuddled up and watched a half of tangled together oh nice yeah fun fun good stuff but I went ahead and caught it
Starting point is 00:03:47 and it's in the form of like a little throaty slight cough nothing major it's not that big a deal but we live in the time of COVID and so So here's what happens in the middle of the night, Brian. It's 2 a.m. 2.30, something like that.
Starting point is 00:04:03 And I wake up and I'm feeling just like just all kind of throaty, a little congested, like I could cough and, you know, whatever. And it suddenly hits me. I don't think I can smell or taste anything. I don't think I can't smell or taste anything. I can't taste it. I can't smell it. I can't do it.
Starting point is 00:04:21 What are you expecting to smell or taste in bed? Don't answer that. I just realized what I said is I was saying. it is it's your brain can go places on this but i i was like i need i need some i need to smell something i need to know i need to know if i could taste it or smell it so it was because i was kind of in i came out of a weird dream and i was just like a little bit a little panicked i have to admit so i ran in the bathroom and i was like what can i smell what can i smell and in the bathroom there are numerous things you can smell there's soaps and there's you know there's very pleasant
Starting point is 00:04:55 things to smell in there. Motions. Right. Exactly. So I go for this cologne. A myriad of gels. Yeah, a myriad of gels, right? And they all have a scent probably.
Starting point is 00:05:04 There's some shampoo in there. You know, I could try that. So I went in there, and I was like, uh, and I kind of panicked. And I went, I'm just going to grab this. And it was a cologne, Kim got me for Christmas that I still use. And it's very nice, daytimey cologne. The reason I say it's daytime. There's a set of two.
Starting point is 00:05:21 And one says work, the other says play. So it's like a nighttime one where you just smell good going to the club or whatever, and then you get the daytime work one where you're at the office going, you know, so fourth quarter numbers were down a little bit, and we all smelled good, right? So, so I took the work one and just went, I did this in my face. I went, in my face. What? And I went, oh, I think I can smell it.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I think I can smell it. No, I can't see. Yeah, now I'm blind. I have alcohol-based smell well in my eyes. So I squirt it, and I smell it, and I think I smell it, but I'm in such a weird. 2 a.m. moment that I'm not sure. So I ran into the kitchen. I didn't run. I briskly moved my way into the kitchen. No, I thought it was your newfound blindness. I wouldn't run. I bumbled myself. I found my, I felt my way to the kitchen. Not true. I use my phone in the flashlight. And I go into the
Starting point is 00:06:17 kitchen and I grabbed a handful of cran raisins. You know, they're like cranberries. Crains. There you go. That's what they're called. It's crazy. It's crazy. I grabbed a small handful of crazins. So picture me in my freaking undies in the kitchen with a handful of crazons. And I went, I'm just sitting there going, and I got this light in my hand. Okay. Oh, no, okay, it's okay. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:06:38 I can taste them? Can I taste them? Can I taste it? And I still wasn't sure at first. And then I did. I tasted him. I went, oh, it's not the COVID-19. But it could have just been my, I could be just dreaming I can taste the crazons.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Where's the maple syrup? I mean, I, it ran the, through my head that if I don't taste these, I got to move up the chain to something more potent. Right. Yes. Tabasco. I think I finally, I think what happened is I finally kind of was coming to, like I was actually being awake, for real.
Starting point is 00:07:07 And I could you know, I could make sense of the senses. And I was like, okay, I can taste this. What am I freaking doing? And so I went and went to bed. I don't want to be that guy, Scott, but I'm going to be that guy. Go ahead. Who says that not everybody experiences
Starting point is 00:07:24 the lack of taste or smell with COVID. I thought there was, I thought that was the 100% or deal, unless you were, unless you were 100% symptom-free, that if you had any symptoms, those were always there, and that was your big to try. I, I think it's common, but I think, and, you know, either we wait for Bobby to tell us tomorrow. He tells us in the, in the chat room. We got a lot of notes in the chat, yeah. A lot of notes. Well, it didn't matter because even though that's a logical thing you're saying, I was in no condition. Exactly. You were in no mood for logic at two in the morning? Hell no. I wasn't even close to that. So I was, yeah, I was freaking out. I mean,
Starting point is 00:08:01 mainly I was just like, well, in my head, I was going, okay, well, if I get it, I get it, but who have I been in contact with? What's the spread ratio? Like, I don't, we try really hard not to go anywhere or do anything stupid. Of course. And so I was thinking, well, I got, Kim, definitely exposed. Carter would be exposed. The baby was here, but I think he would have given it to me but I didn't know and then I thought well Carter or Taylor and Dylan came to pick him up so now they're they're probably you know like I was just trying to like contact trace everybody yeah in my head which is none of this is good at two o'clock in the morning when it's a little chilly in the house there's a flashlight from a phone that
Starting point is 00:08:40 makes me look like a psycho intruder and I'm standing right all the neighbors need to see crazins yeah so that's funny the contact tracing reminds me we went to trivia last Thursday night with our friend Don. And the place we go is great. Stoney's downtown. They are absolutely
Starting point is 00:09:02 adhering to the 25% capacity. The tables are super spread, super spreader apart. And they've even got dots on the floor. So when you are showing your answer
Starting point is 00:09:16 to the trivia host, you don't even have a piece of paper that you write on and give them now. You just show you write your answer and show it to the host and they give you points. So it's like these guys are maintaining really good standards as far as this goes. And when you go in, they say, well, we need somebody's name and phone number for contact tracing in case we need to get a hold of you for something. And Tina and I were the first ones there, so I gave them my name and phone number.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Now, we mentioned this to Don, who's kind of on the, well, let's say he just, he's on the other side of the aisle. Let's just say that. Kind of, he showed up to trivia wearing a T-shirt that says, make 2020, or make 2021 less like Big Brother 1984. Oh, brother. All right. I got to give you an idea of where he's at. Sure. So I mentioned that to him.
Starting point is 00:10:13 And really, I'm doing this. I admit, I'm poking the dragon by doing this, but I said, yeah, actually, when we got in, I had to do the contact tracing thing, and I gave them my name and number for a table. He says, yeah, you know, I go to, he's going to movies in the movie theaters right now, because he really does want to support theaters. And he says, yeah, they always ask me when I go into theaters for that stuff, and I just give him a fake name, like, great, because he doesn't want to be traced by the government. So I said, oh, that's going to come in really.
Starting point is 00:10:45 handy when they say uh hi mr tyler durden um we couldn't get a whole of tyler durden because uh to tell him that he's got covid oh well yeah and also this this notion that the government gives two shits about tracing right they don't care any if there's any one person in the world that the government would would uh would die of boredom watching it like actually tracing his every moves i think it would be our friend done well i'm glad uh I'm glad he, how do I put this? I'm glad despite his disdain for the cautionary approach to this worldwide pandemic and half a million Americans dead. I, at the very least, I'm glad that he has not gotten it and that he's okay.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Yes. I prefer that. I prefer that even the most ardent opposition of common sense practices for this sort of thing, I'm glad that some of them don't get it. You're glad, but you also kind of, it also kind of makes you bum that it helps support their opinion that it's not a big deal, that it's just like the flu. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:11:58 I mean, that's the problem, right? When it doesn't affect you, I think it depends on who you are and your level of empathy. But if it doesn't affect you, then you don't know how it affects you so you don't have a perspective on it. You don't have that perspective. This doesn't sound right. I don't see this happening.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Did your tooth really just fall out? No, I was a joke. I caught what I had in my mouth, and I realized, oh, I shouldn't be doing this on the show, but I had a mint, a little bit of a mint. Come on. And you want to judge other podcasters? Well, look, I want to judge potential podcasters.
Starting point is 00:12:36 I guess they're all podcasting this year, aren't they? They're all podcasting. Yeah, we got rid of the one person who didn't podcast. who hasn't podcasted officially in an official capacity yet. Spoiler. Spoiler, don't worry. You'll forget it by the time the first episode of America's next top podcaster
Starting point is 00:12:54 dropped sometime in late 2022. That's right. You'll forget by it. Forget about pandemic. It'll be gone by that. Hopefully. Well, anyway. I know Bobby's in the chat room.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Oh, yeah. No, Bobby is here. And he's doing a great job. He is doing a great job. Exactly. He's a, I think we're still on track to release the first episode next week. week. And I know some of that hinges on me recording some of my crap. So I will, I will finish
Starting point is 00:13:18 recording my crap. Nice. Get your crap going. Hey, we got a bunch of emails that said, Scott, you and Brian have been calling these 800 numbers, these old dead 800 numbers. And I said, yeah, we sure have. And multiple people wrote it and said, I can't believe you haven't tried to see if Columbia House and their 800 numbers still works. And I got to thinking, I know this for a fact, whether you've told me or not, I am 100% sure that Brian at one time or another was a member of Columbia House, right? I was totally a member. I still even have, I still have albums, some vinyl record albums, in my collection that I got from Columbia House that I forgot to send back the stupid-ass card from. That's how they get you over there.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Oh, yeah, and I had to give some, I like to pay so, like, great, I got a copy of freaking, uh, my, Michael Bolton that I now have to pay $23 for. And I don't want it. Yeah. Yeah, I think, I'm trying to remember. I know I was on their deal for, oh, this was great. Yeah, I did this during, well, I was living at the dorms. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:27 And I never, I never stopped. Like, I don't think I ever canceled it, but I moved out of the dorms and they were never able to find me because there's no forwarding stuff. that happened from the dorms to my first apartment. Oh. So I think... You're on the run. There's probably quite a stack of mail waiting for me.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Yeah, you're a fugitive. At Fourth North at the Denver University dorms, dormitories. I did this briefly in my youth and the first record or tape I ever got was tapes at the time. The very first one I got was Scorpions. What's the one with the forks on his eyes? What was that called? Yeah. I know the cover.
Starting point is 00:15:11 I don't know the name of that album. Blackout? Blackout? Blackout. Yes. Yeah. So I'd blackout. Fantastic.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Blackout. Not Blackout? Not Blackout? Pop-I. Pop-I. So anyway, I'm looking at their website now. Columbiahouse.com is your first two DVDs for only 995 each. Oh, so they've moved over to, they've jumped on that popular, that current popular bandwagon of DVDs.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Yeah, DVDs, you guys. That's the, that's the new hotness. Well, it's way better than. And we're going to send you an MP3 every month. If you keep it, you've got to pay us $18. And I'm just going to say that selection's terrible, probably because there are a million other ways to get your stuff now and who would care about this. For sure. Are they current movies?
Starting point is 00:16:00 Like these are. Some are. Yeah. Some are old. Some are old. Some are new. Summer. But are the crude's new age, freaky.
Starting point is 00:16:07 I mean, these are within the last few months. It's a hot release that crude sequel. People are really into it. So I thought, I went around and I found an old commercial. Well, here I'll play it. Part of it. It's not the whole thing. But this is how they used to try to reach out to us in the late 80s.
Starting point is 00:16:23 It's about 89 or so. And this is the kind of tone they were taken then. It's the best part of the day. You put all your cares away. Get ready for a smile on your face. It's just the right time. You get the right place It was like two minutes into the song
Starting point is 00:16:57 Before it finally told me what this thing was Yeah, he's playing Maxwell That's going to tell me the best part of waking up Holder's in my cup or something it is totally in that vein of like heart jerky family time freaking i hate those kind of ads but anyway so this was and it's a it's a decently sized ad but it's just a family you know listening to music together and watching VHS movies and that's what they had at the time was tapes uh they still had tapes they also had compact discs which at the time were relatively
Starting point is 00:17:32 new and then VHS movies and um they showed some Mel Gibson oh I think it was the Patriot or something well that couldn't been that old though it must have been no no it's wait when did the Patriot come out hold on 96 yeah this is throwing me here I don't remember what I saw now 2,000 oh geez okay oh 2,000 wow I don't know what that was but anyway the point is they have at the end an 800 number that's how you still ordered things back then no internet so we're going to call it all right let's see what's going on with this number hold on right here we're going to dial it It's the start of your day.
Starting point is 00:18:11 You think you threw the card away. Now you're going to get stuck with Michael Bolton. I mean, you're not wrong. That's the thing. Yeah, no, exactly. All right, we're ringing. If you want to try this at home, 801, or no, 800, 532, 5353. You ought to play the home game?
Starting point is 00:18:38 Yeah. you want to play the home version of this we got you we got you covered all right still ringing that surprises me usually these things default to something if they're gone wow does no one answer at the freaking columbia house old number not even a voicemail brian it's not even a voicemail this is just going to ring that's right because they're like don't answer it somebody wants to return their copy of electric youth by Debbie Gibson. Don't answer. Oh, wait. Did we miss a ring? Hold on. Oh, that was short. No, it's just, it's going to go forever. Damn it. All right. Well, we tried. Say Columbia House. Say Columbia House.
Starting point is 00:19:23 All right. So like the 50 or so of you that said do Columbia. house. We did. That's all we got. That's all they gave us. So how does that compare to you? No notes found. I prefer no nodes found. At least then I know that there are no nodes found. You know? In this one I'm just, is there a phone ring in some place? Is it just sitting there going? And nobody knows. And their one's answering is an empty room somewhere with a phone just ringing some sad ass phone from 1989? No routes found. Sorry. What did you say? I didn't say no routes found. Oh, you said nodes. Nodes. No nodes. No routes. Routes. Routes. It's called the whole thing off. None of it. Yeah. All right. Well, that was fun.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Now, don't worry, though, everybody. Oh, I got to keep that open because we're doing the Babel Royale here in a second. We're going to call Brian Dunaway out into the call and play Babel Royale. That means you can play 2, 801-471062. And encourage to call and play with us today if you are so inclined. All right. Here's our theme song. Hey, everybody. Welcome to Babel Royale. A little game hosted by your own Brian Nibbitt. And we have with us, Brian Dunaway, who joins us each Monday and Wednesday for this. Hello, Brian. Oh, hi, Scott and Brian. Is it Monday or Wednesday? Wednesday. It's Wednesday. That's right. Hey, tomorrow we're going to call the Psychic Friends Network.
Starting point is 00:20:57 Oh, we should. That's excellent. But they'll see it coming. Yeah, they'll see it coming. That's right. They probably. worded Columbia House, actually. Yeah, they already know what we're doing one day ahead. Actually, that's not bad. They're wrong to us. I may try that. Anyway, hey, Dunoway, it's good to have you here,
Starting point is 00:21:17 and we're coming off a fantastic boop show yesterday, so people should be checking that out at a great time. Yes, we played, I played some Valheim, and you play blasphemy. Yeah, I also played Valheim. I played Valheim last night some more, and I'm just bad at it. I got killed by a tree.
Starting point is 00:21:34 That was no good. Oh, you get a tree killed by the ants, it's okay. No, no, no, want one of those. I was just chopping down a tree, and it came in my direction and squashed me. Yeah. Yeah, they'll probably improve that. It's kind of random which way it falls, but, you know, just came out. I think they want, I think they want to.
Starting point is 00:21:53 I'll bet you when that thing hits 1.0, that tree problem stays in, because that seems like chaos. I think they're going to fix it because I played a Rune last year, and they had the same problem in people. complained. Yeah. But then Rune, nobody bought Rune. It's like four people. That's the problem, see. Right.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Whereas this thing's already... But they fixed it. They right away, they're like, let's fix it. Yeah. Well, let's fix another thing. That is our need for a guest. They've been waiting very patiently. Let's find out who this is.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Hi, good morning. Who's this? Hello. I guess you're talking to me. Yes, I sure am. Hi. My name is Adam. I'm Sack Buddy Gone in the chat room.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Oh, Sack Buddy gone. Yeah. Hey, it's good to have you here, Sack. Wait, Adam, is your name. Hey, Adam, welcome to the show. It's good to have you here. Adam and his ribs. Please take a moment and explain Sackbutt Egon.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Yeah, what is that? What's up with that name? Yeah, happily. Well, Scott's probably not going to like this, but a Sackbut is precursor to a trombone. Okay. I'm a trombone player. Okay. And Egon.
Starting point is 00:22:56 I, uh, I resemble Egonne kind of. Oh. Oh, really? Okay. It kind of talk like Egonne too. You're wrong with that? Cool. So wait, sack butt.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Oh, Harold Ramos licking trombone player. But the trombone, is the sack butt or whatever thing of the trombone? Is that where all the spit goes or something weird like that? Well, that's the spit tube, guy. Oh. I don't know. There's a spit valve at the end of the slide, yeah. That's right.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Are those things got special COVID restrictions on them? Can you like take those around and swap them with your friends or what? Yeah, that's kind of gross. That was disgusting. I think I know what you're getting when you get to that end. When you get a spit valve, yeah. I think everybody knows that. Well, all right, Adam, we're going to play a game.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Brian's going to explain it to you and tell you what your prizes are. That's right. Adam, I'm going to be giving Scott and Brian a topic. They're going to go back and forth giving me answers that fit that topic. If one of them gives a wrong answer, they repeat an answer, or they repeat an answer, or they take too long to come up with an answer. The wind will go to the other player. That was great.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Your job is too. predict who's going to come out on top based on the topic. Today, you are playing for a pair of Steam games, Molexintes. I don't think you're saying that correctly. Molkesimates. Sure. I don't know, but if you put that on a triple word score and scrabble, you're going to get so many points. You're also going to get a copy of Driftland, the Magic Revival.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Oh, Driftland's good. I like Drifland. I like it when there's at least one thing that's recognizable. We try our best. All right. So topic this time comes to us from Lucas Trader, who wrote in and said, Let's see. I've been enjoying listening to you and Scott and Brian on TMS, normally in podcast form for the last few months after checking it out via recommendation.
Starting point is 00:24:53 I have an idea for a Babel Royale topic that I didn't see on the topic list and want to confirm that this is the right email address. And then I said yes. And then he sent it to me. I'm glad you shared all that part with us. I like it. Well, I did want to tell you, you know, give him a little bit of a plug for being such a Yeah, why not? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:14 His topic is Lego themes, current Lego themes. So right now you walk into the Lego store and different sections all have different Lego sets all grouped together and you go over and you find the one you want, you buy it. And it comes, and up in the corner, it'll say, part of this theme, right? As an example, some discontinued Lego themes are things like Lego Avatar, the Last Airbender, and Lego. So that's not current. Those are not current. They have stopped making bionical and some of these.
Starting point is 00:25:56 But there are, I usually have this number in front of me and I don't, there are current. there are currently 43 different current sets that they sell. Now the sets aren't necessarily, just just for clarification, they're not necessarily like an overall theme. So let's, for example,
Starting point is 00:26:15 let's say, I'll make a fake one up. Let's say there was a careful, careful. Yeah, I do want to be careful. Let's say there was moons of indoor theme. Let's say there's Lego Fast and the Furious. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:26:30 So that answers my question because it sounds like it does dig down to specific properties. So if you had a larger universe of let's say, let's say it's the dark horse universe, here you go. Have you been to the Lego store, Scott? I have. So let's say you got the dark horse universe. Does that mean that if I say the dark horse universe, you're going to say, I'm going to need you to narrow that down. And then I might say hellboy or something like that. Does that?
Starting point is 00:26:55 Yes. Yes. That's a good. Because the overall theme could be. lots of different sets under You know, I think you should just use a mulligan. Yeah, I'm certainly not going to, well, you guys will, yeah, I'm going to give you a mulligan beyond the initial, yes,
Starting point is 00:27:09 Mulligan. But, yeah, like, for example, if we were doing the Lego Hobbs and Shaw series, I would ask you, I would, I would, that would be the correct answer, not Hobbs's. This is feeling very much like the board games on Friday night when you've never played before and you try to explain it and you're like we'll just start playing it we're just going to start playing it and then we'll figure it out as you go out yes exactly I think you answered my
Starting point is 00:27:39 question though so I think I'm good oh that's probably a better way of saying it the Lego Fest and Furious collection versus the Lego Hobbs and Shaw mini collection within that right but these are themes right it's not as a collection right right right right themes all right not individual individual Lego sets but the themes out there in which they part. Right. Okay. I think I think we can do this. Adam, if you finish... Let's just start playing. If you finish
Starting point is 00:28:08 diagramming that sentence out, who do you think is going to win Scott or Brian and who do you want to go first? I think I'll let... I think Brian will win and I think Scott will go first. All right. I think I will go as well. And like you said, you'll get
Starting point is 00:28:24 your initial mulligan, but I'll also give you one extra mulligan. Okay. So let's do um boy it's already sounding too broad as i say it in my head um well then i'll just tell you be more specific mulligan i'll try to mirror i'll try to narrow it down let's say that there's is there an avenger's set or our theme or whatever however i'm saying it you'll go less specific and i'll just tell you it's the marvel set so marvel okay that and that contains all of your marvel properties all right there you go then that explains why
Starting point is 00:28:57 there's less of these total like 40 whatever you said That explains why there's less than I thought, because under each of those umbrellas, they might get major specific. So, all right, so then Marvel is my answer. Yes. Very good. Okay. My answer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:11 I like Marvel. Me. Marvel. Uh-huh. Okay, so I'm going to go with a broader one. So is there like, okay, if I'm too generally, you have to narrow me down, I'm going to go with Earth. All right. So I need you to narrow me down from Earth.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Yeah, I'll need you to be more specific. Oh, more specific than that? All right, fine. How about, how about, how about biomes or, or, you know, World, Minecraft. I'm going on Minecraft. Okay. The world of Minecraft.
Starting point is 00:29:40 Minecraft, Lego Minecraft. I know because we just bought some of these recently. Yeah, they've been doing that from 2012 to the present, Lego Minecraft. I love how, does how much space there is between Earth and Minecraft. Yes. I mean, I was thinking, Earth, you know. It's a huge place. Minecraft is.
Starting point is 00:29:57 All right. I'm going to go with, oh, he got that. right, right? Yeah. He did. Let's do Star Wars. Star Wars. I do Star Wars. Since 1999, they've had a Lego Star Wars property.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Oh, that's later in the cycle than I would have guessed. That's crazy. Yeah, so he did Marvel then that one, right? Dang it. You didn't follow for it. All right. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Let's try. Brian knows. He knows what's up. I'm going to go with, and it's got to be current, right?
Starting point is 00:30:37 I'm pretty sure last time we went. I'm pretty sure last time I went. I'm going to do it early on because in case I get it wrong. But I think they still do Harry Potter. They do still do Harry Potter. Since 2001, they've had Lego Harry Potter sets. They stopped. I will tell you, they stopped between 2011 and 2018.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Oh, that was close. That's weird. Hold on a minute. Why would they do that? escape it was uh-huh that's why you're getting when did the last movie come out before Fantastic Beasts was that 2011
Starting point is 00:31:07 it's been a long time it's been nine years since the horrocks I mean he would only have been the kids would have only been 10 or 11 then that would have been like three or four so they there had been plenty I think maybe they just got too serious and maybe that wasn't fun for Legos anymore I don't know I don't know what they're doing
Starting point is 00:31:23 I don't know all right uh so you got that right oh man Well, there's the D.C. stuff. So Marvel has it. That's very true. Since 2011, there's Lego D.C. Okay. I feel good about this. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:43 Okay. That was your answer then. Yeah. D.C. And I got it. Well, then I got a question. Well, okay. I was trying to think of my Lego games and stuff too. See, now I got to ask. Sure. I know there's not just
Starting point is 00:31:59 D.C. There's like a whole, like, there's like a really big section called Batman. And I know it's D.C. But it's not a separate theme. Is that your answer? Is it my answer if you're not going to ding me and say it's wrong?
Starting point is 00:32:12 I'm not going to ding you. There actually is a separate separate from the D.C. is a separate Batman. Now that's the one that started in 2018 and has the Batcave with all the old 1960s. so it's separate from the DC universe
Starting point is 00:32:29 series that they do. I was trying to think of Warner Brothers stuff because I know Warner Brothers got... Yeah, I'm just glad you said that because when I went through all the answers at the end, you're going to say, well, Batman, but that's part of D.C. Why'd you make me more less specific?
Starting point is 00:32:44 But yes, they have a separate... Well, I wish the answer would be... I wish there was an answer that was Waterworld or Mad Max. Sadly, those never happen. So, I'm going to say, a, oh man, there's so many. Okay, the, I don't know that, I don't know if you're going to do this.
Starting point is 00:33:08 I don't know the exact name of this, but there's the stuff that's like based on real buildings so like you can get a White House one and a Washington Monument one and they're really realistically, not realistic, they're still Legos, but they're, you know, designed to be real world place. I don't know the name of that, though. What do they call those people that make buildings? Architects series, Architects. It's the architecture series. Exactly right. From 2008 to now that you're super boring, here's the architect theory. Now, now, I love, I had the, I do have the Las Vegas one up over there, and then the, because of course I do.
Starting point is 00:33:49 And the space needle we did as well, which they're cool. They're very cool. Do you have a little mini-fig Brian Ibit that jumps off the top and a blue jumpsuit? That's right. Weig. Wee. All right. I don't know that when we went last time, I was tempted to get a big giant Jurassic Park World dinosaur.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Someone said Jurassic Park. Isn't that, it's the Warner Brothers do. They discontinued the Jurassic Park line in 2015 and then brought it back as Jurassic World in 2018. Wow. Wow. They really did. That's fantastic. They really did. Yeah. Jurassic World is a series. Well, excellent. I'm showing Brian's jumping off the thing. The image to the chat room right now.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Oh. Is it my descending Jesus pose? Yes. I wish I could take a participation in that. What is? You'd watch the chat. Describe it. Brian, a transparent image. Brian in a blue jumpsuit with a with a with a strap very tightly wrapped around his crotch and his arms outstretched yeah I have a I have a better image in my head than
Starting point is 00:35:05 that picture could possibly you probably do yeah all right let's go with uh uh see I know there's some generic like um stuff for kids like there's got to be okay uh like a fire engine fire department kind of set thing theme. It's like public utility, public service. Public utilities. Cops and firemen and stuff like that. No. Back away from it a little more.
Starting point is 00:35:40 City. It's the city. There you go. It's the city. They've been doing that since 2005 city, the city set, which is a really cool set. I don't have any of them, but if I were to get back into like regular Lego purchases.
Starting point is 00:35:57 Yeah, right. That's the set I'd do because they've got like an ice cream shop with a podcasting, really a radio station up above it, but I'd call it a podcasting studio. Yeah. You can make your own, put your own little Spider-Man. Movie theater. Whatever you want. Yep.
Starting point is 00:36:10 Okay. I feel good about that. All right. I'm going with Mario themed. Mario, Super Mario. Or do I need to be less specific? No, that's exactly right. Okay, Mario.
Starting point is 00:36:23 They started that one in 2020, and my mother-in-law bought me the starter set for the Mario Lego blocks, which is kind of fun. It's really cool. Like he goes, he bounces, like he's got a little, little screens for his eyes and in his chest and stuff. So it makes the noises when you bounce him around. It's really cool. That's great. This is one of the few that has tempted me lately. It's kind of cool.
Starting point is 00:36:46 Yeah. It deserves to be tempting. Sorry, I just wanted to enjoy a little Mario music. Um, okay. Those are three Japanese non-English-speaking ladies who made that song. Um, all right. Um, let's, uh, oh, okay. I don't think they still make that, though.
Starting point is 00:37:11 Do the Mario. Boop, boop, boop. Isn't there some kind of like, uh, jungle safari thing? John Legu Zamo wants you to do the Mario. Hey, shut up. You're giving my answer. I think there's a, there's a, there's a, there's a jungle adventure, uh, slash safari, let's go. It's called Jurassic World.
Starting point is 00:37:33 No. It's more of a general one. Isn't there, Brian? Like a, I'm looking. I'm looking through the list. I am not. You're thinking of Jurassic World. Anything that.
Starting point is 00:37:43 What do you think this is the 50s? Now. Yeah. Not there. I think you're going to, I think you're going to be using your. Um, is my mulligan. Okay. Your mulligan.
Starting point is 00:37:57 I'm looking to see, like, there was a discontinued in 2003 Lego Adventurers. Oh. Kind of like, uh, oh, I don't want to say it. Yeah. Now they won't have that current. Indiana Jones kind of. Yeah. That's what my favorite, Lego game.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Indiana Jones was discontinued also. Yeah, and I definitely didn't think that was still out. After, after the Crystal Skull, they said, take those off the shelf. Yep. I'm not seeing Lego. Lego and nothing related to Lego Pitfall All right
Starting point is 00:38:29 Big buzz But how about Okay, so I have to go right away, right? Right away, exactly Let's do Lord of the Rings I know it existed But maybe it's still Maybe it's still in here
Starting point is 00:38:40 Lego Lord of the Rings was Discontinued In 2013 They did not bring it back After the last Hobbit This is stupid And the Hobbit was 2012 to 2014. So they did switch gears to the Hobbit.
Starting point is 00:38:58 But that ended in 2014. So I couldn't even give you that one. Let me ask you this before you say. Because I know you're going to go through the rest of these. But were there other video game ones that we didn't say? Yes. Damn it. We said Minecraft.
Starting point is 00:39:12 Right. So when you say video games, you mean also a video game version of it. I am going to kick myself. I'm sure I am. All right. Tell me what we missed. What did we miss? All right.
Starting point is 00:39:21 So going down the list, we'll get to the one that's a video game. Lego Boost, which is robotics. Brickheads, which is buildable characters. Lego Classic. Just good classic. Creator 3 and 1. Creator expert. Disney, just regular Disney princess and characters.
Starting point is 00:39:42 Dots, which is their arts and crafts. You make pictures using single pixel looking. Oh, my God. Is there an age limit on that one? because I would for sure eat whatever that's called. Yeah, it's definitely, Duplo is still currently produced. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:58 The Friends still listed as current because of that simple perk. Really? What? Yeah. What Friends, the TV series? I think Friends, the TV series. Here's the description, though. It says five best friends.
Starting point is 00:40:11 So I don't know if it is the same because, what are they eliminating Phoebe or something? Yeah, that's not all the Friends. It must be a different series. Is there a Gunter? Disney, or I'm sorry, Frozen. Okay. Hidden side, which is most supernatural and mystery-solving with interactive augmented reality. I want that.
Starting point is 00:40:28 Lego ideas, Lego art, Lego brick sketches, Lego education, Lego Originals. Mindstorms, they're still producing. Mini-figures, which is a collectible mini-figure set outside of the boxes. Lego Minions, which is the... What? How is that still a thing? Monkey Kid, which is Journey to the West. No idea.
Starting point is 00:40:52 Monkey kid? No idea. But it's spelled M-O-N-K-I-E, so I think it's a property. L-E-G-O. Yeah, bad spellers to the West. Nizago. Here's the video game franchise. Overwatch.
Starting point is 00:41:05 No! Oh, they had Overwatch, really? I knew about that. I totally forgot they did that. I'll bet that gets canceled. Lego Power Functions, Lego powered up, Lego Serious Play, Speed Champions. They do have the Spider-Man separate from the Marvel.
Starting point is 00:41:19 Stranger Things, Expert Builder Technique, or Technic. Trolls World Tour, Toy Story, and Lego Video, which is in cooperation with Universal Music Group. It is a brand new set that just came out in the last month that allows you to make music videos. Oh, so kind of like the old Steven Spielberg. Yep. Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:41:42 If I had my way, they'd make a Breaking Bad set, they'd make a... Breaking Bad would be great. Yeah, Mr. Robot. Winners. Justified set. Oh, justified set. It would be amazing. Like, just do all my heart, my gritty shows. Do that. Yeah. That'd be cool. Well, all right.
Starting point is 00:41:58 I'm actually having heard you read that list, the only one I think I would have gotten if I'd have just given my brain a little more time. Would have been Overwatch? The rest of those, I, for the most part, never heard. You would have gotten Duplo or Technic? Yeah, I forgot Duplo was even them. I kept thinking that was like, I was holding on Duplo because I remember last time I went, I'm like, look at these stupid things in the corner. one of these two big blocks, that'll Duplo.
Starting point is 00:42:20 I've seen. So Lego Friends is a product range of the Lego construction toys designed primarily for girls. Start in 2012. They introduced mini-doll figures, which are about the same size as a mini figure,
Starting point is 00:42:32 but a more detailed and realistic. Did you guys watch the TV series, the Lego Masters? No. Oh, no. I watched an episode or two of those. It was NBC, I think, had it. I'm not sure if still running there
Starting point is 00:42:43 for it was just like a half-season fill-in or something, but it was interesting things. It was a good. Do you like reality show TV? Then this might be... Well, Brian's in then. I could tell you this, though. I mean, if they do it like...
Starting point is 00:42:56 If it's like British Bakeoff where it's like a... Everyone's not a dick, then I'm into it. Right. They picked interesting builders. So everybody they picked, they were doing a pretty good job of picking people that were, you know, unique characters. It's fascinating. I would watch that show. All right.
Starting point is 00:43:14 Well, the important thing here, guys, is that we have a winner. Winner, winner. That's right. You backed the horse name Brian and that worked out pretty well. Adam, how's that feel? It feels excellent. I'm super stoked to have one. That's great. We're glad to have you here. Your first time caller, a long time listener. I am. That makes us happy to hear as well. Here's all you have to do. Send Brian an email, coverville at gmail.com. He'll send you your winnings and you will be a winner forever. Thanks for me. Ever? Well, this wasn't important. Let's keep that going.
Starting point is 00:43:45 I'm looking to see where the James Bond, because they made the James Bond, Aston Martin, even with an ejector seat, and I can't find what part that would be. Is that just, that might just be speed champions, which is Lego Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche. I saw a really cool, and it must have been the speed champions, because I saw a really cool car went. And even I was like, oh, I'm getting this. They're like, no, you're not. Like, shut up. Not really a car guy.
Starting point is 00:44:13 I have supposed to be. come but my dad would love that oh my gosh you would love car sets and stuff but we never we used to buy the models you know like the glue model stuff at the hobby shops and all yeah yeah and scott would just snip glue all day oh yeah baby oh yeah get me you know what i want you know what i like all right uh that'll do it there oh ideas okay that's cool well oh is that that's what that's what that's what the james bond that the astin martin comes from the lego ideas oh yeah they're in the process of making a Lego Sonic Mania Green Hill Zone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Legendary Stratocaster, Home Alone. Brian, they're making a Lego Earth globe, so if only. Sweet. I can't wait. I'm building the world. Yep. Seinfeld 30th anniversary. No.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Yes. Oh, I heard they were doing that. Yes. Yes. So I think it's just the inside of Jerry's apartment. It is. You can do a really cool, like, perfect edition of the Seinfeld
Starting point is 00:45:16 apartment in Sims 4 now. They have like exacting furniture for it. It makes me want to play the Sims 4. It's like the only reason I want to try it. And I can recreate my own. I don't remember Seinfeldi Industries. I have a little mini fig with his pants down. Oh man. Sorry. I don't remember Seinfeld coming
Starting point is 00:45:32 out at the same time that ID Software came together. They're at 30th anniversary. There's no way. I guess it is though. The 90s, right? Seinfeld was 90, right? Or 89? it's software 30th anniversary yeah yeah I think that's right so yeah weird right think of that life is fast before you know it it's here and in your face and then it goes
Starting point is 00:45:54 away and you never know what chocolate is in the box my mom used to say and then you have to take blue bills uh done away it's been a pleasure uh this weekend we're going to do uh film sack and that movie is going to be virtuosity with denzil washington and russell caro yeah uh old 90s something something 90 something I think it was prior to Matrix Well yeah Definitely prior to Matrix
Starting point is 00:46:19 And definitely prior to What's the one of Denzel won Is Bosker for Training Day A Training Day, yeah Training Day, good So this is like pre that And then later in their early 2000s Those two would work together again
Starting point is 00:46:32 An American Gangster Which is an excellent gangster movie Side Fun fun side note Which I'm sure we'll get into This weekend on FilmSack Brian Dunaway Have a great week
Starting point is 00:46:43 Thank you. You know, it's a bummer. I'm looking at the Lego Seinfeld 30th anniversary, and they don't have a Mac SE 30 on Jerry's desk in the back. Mac Classic or whatever it was. Yeah, what was that? I think it was a Mac Classic. Yeah, I remember that?
Starting point is 00:47:06 Oh, that was great. Whatever that, it was that same, you know. It upgraded over time. I remember he got a newer one later season. that was like separate monitor and whatever. It's still a Mac, but it wasn't good. Yeah, I think that, yeah, right, I think like it was a 2CI or 2CX or something there.
Starting point is 00:47:24 Yeah. TaxiCab says plus, but I don't remember. Anyway, we're going to take a break. When we come back, our good pal Tom Merritt will be here. We're going to talk a little tech. And then Nicole with recommendals after that. And I can finally talk about a documentary I watch, which took me weeks to get through. Because it came out.
Starting point is 00:47:43 out once every six weeks, every week for six weeks. Anyway, we'll get to all that in a minute. Before that, though, Brian is going to introduce a song and play it. I am totally going to do that. Haven't played blues on here in a while, and this is a great example of that kind of hybrid between just classic rock and blues with a little bit, this, to me, sounds a little bit like Pearl Jam doing a blues song. It's really cool. The band is called... Sorry about that. It played in my ears really loud. The band is called Slant Six. There's a brand new single that they've released called Sweat Off My Brow.
Starting point is 00:48:21 These guys are Canadian. They're from Edmonton and they rock. Here it is, Slant Six with Sweat Off My Brow. I was a fool I didn't hear you I knew it all I had no time Fool to you
Starting point is 00:49:18 I need your voice You do not live I'm my fault You know them well You have my number I had no clue There's big a fool You miss my
Starting point is 00:49:59 well I need you near Let me come back Come back to you I'm working hard Doing your love Please take a chance A chance on me
Starting point is 00:50:45 Won't you feel cool Of this world Of my bound I feel like a dormant like a dormant Now I do as well see you now but you won't see me and I need you
Starting point is 00:51:54 to help me but you put me out and give up on me Let me come back Come back to I'm working hard To end your love Please
Starting point is 00:52:35 Take a chance A chance on me I want to feel good I'm in front of my brow off my brow Hi! Ah! I'm straight and I work at Robert Dias.
Starting point is 00:53:46 I like sailing, baking and showing off all our Christmas kitchen gadgets to our gay and straight customers. Then he may run on all the pillows around the pillows. All right, we're back, everybody. Welcome back to the program. That band again, Brian. Who was that again? Zoh, the band Slant Six, and the song is Sweat Off My Brow. From Edmonton, Canada, that Slant Six.
Starting point is 00:54:32 There you go. Canada, putting out the hits like they do over there. With the computer, as with any tool, the concept and direction must come from the man. That man is Tom Merritt. He joins us here on the show as he does every Wednesday to talk about the boiling near the surface text stories that are happening. Tom Merritt, welcome to the show. How the heck are you? Yes.
Starting point is 00:54:54 Yes. Boiling. Like a cauldron. Yes. Boiling. Like a boiling. Caldron of boiling. It's Tom Merritt is boiling straight in here. Hey, it's good to see you.
Starting point is 00:55:04 And also, I'm excited because today I get to be back on the Daily Tech News show. I had to miss it last week because of Blizzard stuff. Yeah. You missed it for a pretty good reason, though. That was exciting. Yeah. But I did miss it and I'm looking forward to it. And the nice thing about it is you come in here on Wednesday mornings and we talk about what's kind of, I don't know, popping off.
Starting point is 00:55:22 Like, what's the world talking about in tech on this Wednesday? Well, they're still talking about Australia because Facebook, Nick Clegg, who is, I want to get his title exactly right here. I think he's the vice president of like world affairs, global affairs, vice president of global affairs for Facebook, Nick Clegg. I wrote a blog post this morning saying that everybody who was shocked by Facebook blocking all the news in Australia because of this proposed law just wasn't paying attention. Everyone had Facebook wrong. It was, this has been going on for years and years. And it was just a misunderstanding. And it's all fine now that the law has been changed so that Facebook doesn't have to do any of the things it doesn't want to do.
Starting point is 00:56:07 Meanwhile, over at Neiman Labs, Joshua Benton is comparing Facebook to Kaiser's. so say. Willing to shoot the hostages. Hold on. I'm not even kidding. Like the first paragraph is the usual suspects has a scene in which it goes right into comparing Facebook to the usual suspects. Because what they're saying is Facebook was being told if you don't, you know, we're going to pass this law and you're going to have to pay if you want news. And Facebook said, great, no news.
Starting point is 00:56:39 Here's what that looks like. and Australia backpedaled and put in some amendments. And now the law is going to pass. In fact, it passed the Senate and now it needs to be reconciled. But it's going to be fairly toothless and probably not going to be applied to anybody. Okay. So basically it sounds like corporate blackmail to me. Yeah, I mean, it's not blackmail in the sense that it's not illegal.
Starting point is 00:57:05 Like none of this was illegal. But it's certainly the definition of they paid their way out of it. So Google just wrote a bunch of checks, said, fine, we'll pay Rupert Murdoch and a bunch of other big companies, lots of money, and it looked like Google was going to get out of having the law applied to it because of that. Facebook was like, we don't want to pay that much, so they bargained harder. Now they're signing deals with Australian media companies, and one of the amendments that was put in after Facebook pulled its stunt was that, existing commercial deals should be taken into account when deciding who this law applies to, which essentially means if Facebook's got some deals, they can make the argument like, hey, we made deals. We're paying your news companies. Don't apply this law to us.
Starting point is 00:57:56 So it's likely that this law, which would have only applied to Google and Facebook, isn't going to apply to anybody. Okay. So, man, we've come a long way from Zuckerberg's purview, hot or not website that he started in college, haven't we? right he just wanted to yeah find out what people thought of folks in the women's dorm yeah and look where we are now we are now all right so precedent setting do you think other countries going to respond to this does anybody has anybody have any other governments went wait a minute this we're hey facebook don't try that crap here or we're going to like that sort of thing or there was a lot of that earlier this week especially when facebook over corrected and was taking down government Facebook pages because they they put their algorithm on it and the Algorithm, you know, algorithm, it's not always that accurate.
Starting point is 00:58:44 So Canada was saying, one of the ministers in Canada was saying, we're going to do an Australian-style thing here, or we should. The United States was talking about maybe putting some kind of antitrust law in place. A couple of representatives were, you know, when we say the United States and Canada, we're talking about some people in those governments. Europe already has their copyright directive and France is leading the charge there. So that's kind of already underway. They don't really need to do anything differently, although they could tighten things up. But honestly, since Facebook got this deal yesterday, I haven't seen any other strong governmental reaction. I think everybody's waiting to see how this ends up.
Starting point is 00:59:23 Once that law is passed, does Treasurer Frydenberg say, okay, we've looked at all the commercial deals and nobody qualifies for this law. And then I don't think this becomes the precedent in those cases because not everybody's going to want to go through this big fight. right to get there i could see that um and and i can see facebook and google going to other governments and saying hey you don't want to have a big fight we're going to sign a bunch of deals with some news publishers in your country y'all cool good all right yeah yeah um real quick here i grew up with some clags and i could have sworn there was a nick clegg in this family that i grew up near so i've just i've been doing a cursory search this nick clegg used to be in parliament yeah he's nothing like the clegs i knew no okay yeah because he's a british dude who used to be
Starting point is 01:00:08 a prime minister, deputy prime minister in the UK. Yes, he was a member of the Lib Dem party. He was the deputy prime minister in a coalition government with the conservatives. He's wearing a sweet. Not the same guy. He likes a, he likes sweater vests. That's just a side note. I notice this.
Starting point is 01:00:21 He is. And now he works for Facebook. Yeah. Yeah. Like, you know, Tom, the natural step from government, or sorry, yeah, from government is to work over there at Facebook. Haven't you heard? Yeah, you want to step up to something that actually has power.
Starting point is 01:00:33 Right. You want to go somewhere where you can actually twist and shape the world. Yeah. Exactly. Well, all right. This is an interesting story. There's more to it, obviously. And we'll talk about the latest on the show today, among other things. Pete Wells from Australia, a tech reporter does podcasting in Australia, is going to join us this morning. Give us the boots on the ground view from Australia about that. That's awesome. I didn't know that. I really like him when he calls in. So that's great. Happy to be there on the day he's there. Any other things going on around your world that you'd like to mention to the fine folks at home? Yeah, Sawyer met a little Boston Terrier this morning on the walk named Stanley. Super cute. And we got a great recommendation on a place to board our dogs.
Starting point is 01:01:15 Oh, that's fantastic. It's a small thing sometimes. That's not what you're supposed to do in a plug, is it? I like it, though. But that's great. Yeah. I took it too literally when you said, is there anything going on around here? Yeah, I guess what I will say is a Freetown newsletter.
Starting point is 01:01:31 I know a lot of you have signed up. And I've been getting your emails and hopefully you've been getting my responses. And it's really fun to see all the people who are, who read my little weekly email. If you don't know what it is, every week I just write up an email. Maybe I'll write up about meetings daily the dog this week. Usually I write about podcasts and what I've been doing. So if you would like to be in on that, free tom newsletter.com. Very nice. Tom Merritt, everybody.
Starting point is 01:01:55 Aisdeck on Twitter and catch us today at 2.30 Mountain Time for the Daily Tech News show. We'll see you soon. Bye. Bye now. See it Tom. That's a very efficient segment today. He's like, bam, bam, bam. just one thing, you know,
Starting point is 01:02:09 like so, so professional. All the bams, even maybe a thank you man. All the bams. Even emerald. That's right. Even emerald is jealous of Thomas Bambam. Oh, who was the guy on, they had a fake emerald on,
Starting point is 01:02:24 uh, Futurama. The blue guy, uh, can't remember. I loved him. I had multiple arms. Anytime the characters needed to go on a date, they'd end up in his restaurant. Elzar. Elzar, that's a.
Starting point is 01:02:37 He was great. All right. We're going to play this now. Oh, Nicole. My sweet Nicole. Hey, look what we got here. It's a one Nicole Spagnolo. Hello, welcome.
Starting point is 01:02:52 How are you? It's a good. Hi. Hi. Nice to see you. My wife was marveling yesterday at the photo you put up of you during the 80s and said, yeah. She looks exactly the same as she did in the 80s.
Starting point is 01:03:07 I said, yeah, Nicole doesn't change. Except my weird punky hair. Yeah, that was cool. In the 80s, we wanted to be punk rockers. So my cousin and I, like, scrapped together just random. I had like the witch's costume from the previous year that I wore and I had my hair all pumped out and it was different colors. I love that. That was a great little memory.
Starting point is 01:03:30 I enjoyed it. Good times. The 80s were great. It's recommendals, everybody. We do it on Wednesdays. We talk about stuff that we like that we've seen streaming on streaming services. And this is no different. That's what we're going to do today.
Starting point is 01:03:46 All right. So just sit back and relax and enjoy it because Brian's got one to introduce first. Brian, what is this thing? This is a brand new series on Netflix, although it's brought to Netflix from another location. What? So in other words, it was on another network. but now Netflix has the series. Oh, I see what you're saying.
Starting point is 01:04:10 Oh, gotcha. Yeah. And this is one that I've been a big fan of, so I was really glad to see a new season of it. And that's all I'm going to say. Well, here it is then. Oh, it's a detective lieutenant Ambrose. Oh.
Starting point is 01:04:24 My wife's watching this. Mm-hmm. Like, binging it. When there's an open alcohol container found in a car accident, we have to file a report. Well, Nick was driving. Sorry, where were you going? He was driving me home.
Starting point is 01:04:42 But you ended up on private property. That's pretty far out of your way. Yeah, yeah, because Nick, he wanted to see the lookout point on Mattisakit, and we got lost. You didn't have your cell phone? A cell phone service was spotty out there. He was driving too fast. I know that. How fast do you remember?
Starting point is 01:05:05 Too fast. And he wouldn't slow down. Why not? You can't really tell him, Nick, what to do. So that's season two of Sinner, yeah? It's season three. Three. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:05:19 Just came out, yeah. My wife loves this show. My gosh, you won't stop talking about it. She loves the soul. It is. Sinner! Did you not see any of the first two seasons? No, although Kim did.
Starting point is 01:05:29 So the first season, my understanding, this is all produced, or it's part of the production company that, what's her name, Beal. Jessica Beal owns. And she was in the first season, right? She was in the first season, yeah. She was the focus of the first season. And then second season, I caught some of it and noticed that Proxima Midnight. Carrie Coon is in Proxima Midnight.
Starting point is 01:05:51 And she was great, as always, like in the stuff I saw. She's great and everything, yeah. So it's a show that I've been able to see. I've inserted myself multiple times and went, oh, this is good. I should watch this whole thing and then got busy with something. and now it's all fragmented, so I don't even know where I'd start, but probably watch it. I mean, you'd want to, you would want to start with season one. I want to say it's like eight episodes per season, three seasons.
Starting point is 01:06:14 So, you know, you can get through them relatively quickly. Start out on USA and not sure, because there's a little tiny bit of nudity in this, but I think it's within USA's, USA networks, limits of nudity. But, yeah, so that's Bill Pullman, you're hearing as the main character, Harry Ambrose. And he's great. He is a police detective that is probably on the verge of retirement, but they keep, he keeps getting involved with new cases. And they're always really, really dark, murdery kind of crimes with mysterious elements to them. And this season is no different.
Starting point is 01:06:57 There's a, you know, a very weird mystery that goes along with this current season of the center. It's I'm trying to think of who Like season three You get That's that guy from Is that his name? He's the friend
Starting point is 01:07:16 But what is he He was in Chuck He was in flight plan White collar That's I'm thinking of his Chuck He was in Chuck Chuck, okay Yeah
Starting point is 01:07:27 I think Yeah Matt Boomer He's good Right And if you're watching Doom Patrol you kind of would recognize him although most of the time he's got bandages all over his face yeah oh that's right i forgot that was him as well yeah exactly but uh it's a really really good
Starting point is 01:07:42 series it basically follows this this season follows a case where um the guy that you heard him interviewing matt boomer's character was with a friend of his that um caused a car accident under very mysterious circumstances and he seems to have a hold on Matt Bomer's character that can't be explained until you get to later episodes in the season. But it's great. It's really,
Starting point is 01:08:12 really good. And all three seasons have been, you know, they're on the level of like the first season of True Detective. So if you like that, you'd like this. Yeah, this is definitely,
Starting point is 01:08:23 maybe Bosch, too. Bosch is another good example. Bosh. Yeah. Very good comparison. Yeah. If you like that stuff, you love.
Starting point is 01:08:29 And what's that other weird one that's like Bosch that, um has billy bob thornton um oh um yeah the that was so weird after the second season um shit i love that though whatever uh goliah so kind of along those lines too except instead of it being a lawyer he's a detective anyway uh see uh sinner season three really good check it out on netflix yeah the lady there's a lady are all the seasons on netflix uh All three seasons are on Netflix. I'm pretty sure it's now.
Starting point is 01:09:04 I think they bought it and owned it and I'm going to keep making it. I think is how it's going. Yeah, I think so. Although it says, it still says originally, or it still says USA Network in the bottom when it, when it does the credit. So I don't know if it's still being produced just by the USA Network or if it aired on the USA Network. Oh, interesting. Side note, Jessica Hiked, who's in that show. You know her.
Starting point is 01:09:29 She's the neighbor. who early on, she seems suspicious, and I haven't seen past that point, but it's the one where the accident happened out in front of her house. Yes. Yes. She's in the boys. She's in high fidelity. She's in tons of stuff. Breaking bad. Ross's wife, Ross's ex-wife's new girlfriend. Yes. On friends. Yeah. Yes. She's been around forever. Tons of stuff. She has been around forever. Yeah. That's right. She was the wife of, like, she was the couple that co-founded, gray matter with Walter White, right? Yep. Yep. It was...
Starting point is 01:10:05 Yeah. She's great. She's very compelling, a very interesting-looking character to look at to watch act. She's really, really cool. Like that final scene, well, that scene in Breaking Bad when the red dots from Skinny Pete and Badger or her and her husband. Oh, man. I'll never forget that. All right. Well, good call, good pick. My wife would agree with you. And me too. I just haven't seen it in its full. Yeah, you need to, you need to, um, devote some time to watching. It's really, really good. All right, here is mine. This is a clip from, uh, the hint is it's a documentary and it is currently
Starting point is 01:10:38 showing on HBO Max in its entirety. So they finally got the whole thing done. And here it is. Henry Ford said, you catch things on the rising tide. You're doomed to success. She wanted to be known as a trailblazer. As any good criminal, she was thinking several moves ahead. America in the early 70s Anybody could be anything they wanted to be I got a mother of five who's Invent of the car Is she famous? No, but she's going to be
Starting point is 01:11:08 I'm going to knock the hell out of Detroit She thought that she would be The next Henry Ford It's a situation of David fighting Goliath She was afraid of spies from the big three There was a briefcase full of cash And next to it
Starting point is 01:11:25 The 357 Magnum Revolver Oh, guns. So you finished a lady in the dale? I did. Well, they finally finished putting it out. So I had to wait. Oh, gotcha. It was a week to week.
Starting point is 01:11:38 So the final episode aired last week and I finally said, yep, now I can recommend it. I really, really enjoyed it, though. Did I? Yes. No, I may have mentioned it. I don't think I did like a full recommendation. No, it was, I look back in my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, re-recommential. Well, hold on. I never did any clips or anything. I think I may have just said I liked it and I was into it. Did I?
Starting point is 01:12:03 You did. Yes. I don't remember playing a clip from it at all. That's weird. All right. Well, it's done and it's awesome. How about that? It finished strong and is one of the weirdest stories I've ever heard of. I didn't know it even existed until this. It was fascinating. The person, the subject of the documentary is one of the strangest people I've ever seen in a a documentary and there are moments where um and i think i do remember talking about this part of it where like the dale this car this three-wheeled car that was going to solve the energy crisis of the 70s was actually showcased on um uh the price is right so the one of the prices right awards or rewards was this three-wheel dale car and um but they never got it into any kind production it never worked out she who happens to be transgender which makes the story even more interesting because it's in the 70s and in the 70s we know we hadn't we hadn't quite gotten our crap together on how transgender issues were going to pan out or how it worked for people and
Starting point is 01:13:09 it was a very different time and so the way she was being treated and also the illegal activity she was up to just creates this really interesting conflict of part of you is rooting for her on one level and then part of you is like dude you're just completely breaking the law to try to get any of this stuff done she goes on the run for a huge amount of time to interview her kids and everybody around her um it ends really strong it's fantastic it's like what six episodes or something and uh it's very good so that's cool i apologize if i already 10th is when when you recommended it yeah i apologize if i already did i did not mean to that's all right that's all right actually I assumed it was all out.
Starting point is 01:13:52 No, it's very good. It is now finally all out, and I would recommend it pretty highly. All right, Nicole, what did you bring with you today? I have two for you. Cool. All right. Two. Let me find my Discord here.
Starting point is 01:14:08 All right. There you go. Okay. I'm hitting number one. Here we go. It's loading, loading. Is this heaven? No.
Starting point is 01:14:21 Is it H-E. Double Hockey sticks? Help. Help. Help. Quiet coyote. It's easy to get turned around. This isn't the Great Beyond. It's the Great Before.
Starting point is 01:14:35 The Great Before? Oh, we call it the U Seminar now, rebranding. Help. Does this mean I'm dead? Not yet. Your body's in a holding pattern. It's complicated. I'll get you back to your...
Starting point is 01:14:58 How do I know her voice? I mean, I know what this movie is, but... It's... Okay, yeah, that one's not Tina Faye. That's later on. What was her... 22's Tina Faye. Hold on.
Starting point is 01:15:09 Yeah, I'm trying to remember who did that character's voice. It's so funny. We should probably say the movie. Yeah, it's soul. So the movie is soul. Yeah. The movie is soul. It's streaming on Disney Plus.
Starting point is 01:15:23 It came out, it was a couple months ago. Yeah, like that. Came out Christmas. So I've been hesitant to show this to my kids because I was like, big concepts, right?
Starting point is 01:15:36 Like, afterlife, yeah. Yeah. My son didn't handle my father passing very well. And I was like, I don't know, don't know if we should watch it. But I'm,
Starting point is 01:15:47 I'm so glad we did. Because I sat next to him and we discussed it and he's like, I don't really understand that. I'm like, this is just a, you know, kind of a imagination of we don't know, but this is a fun way to think of things, right? Yeah. So it turned it, I actually really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how, I didn't know a lot about the film. I didn't realize that he goes back to his body and there's like the whole thing with that, which was really funny. No, I didn't recommend it because I've never seen it up until a couple days ago.
Starting point is 01:16:32 Everybody's thinking I recommended it. Yeah, Scott and I talked about it, but not in recommendals, just saying how much better it was than Wonder Woman 84, which came out on the same day. That's all we talked about. I think that's the extent of our review at the time. Yeah, it was a lot better than that. By the way, the lady I'm thinking of is Alice Braga. She's from Brazil. And I just, that accent is so cool.
Starting point is 01:16:54 I freaking love her accent. Anyway. So if you, if you do have, if you do have children, like, Ava, it went over Ava's head. She just thought it was cute. And there was like, you know, hell, hell. Like the little cute things. And like the quiet coyote, she does a little symbol of a quiet coyote, Mateo goes, hey, we do that in school.
Starting point is 01:17:13 Yeah. I was like, oh, that's cute. so Mateo and I were having you know active conversations when he didn't understand something or he'd ask me questions and I just I just really enjoyed the movie and I've actually referenced it a few times we've talked about you know purpose and our spark and I just really enjoyed it so West Studi is in this I want to make sure to recommend it West what character or the actor West Studi is in this he's um you know last of the Mohicans and a million things mystery man, he's great. I'm trying to see what he is in this. I know. It's not super sad at all.
Starting point is 01:17:50 Yeah. Okay. So there's a pretty well done. Yeah. But it wasn't. So there's a bunch of people called counselor Jerry, but they all have the same name. So. Yes.
Starting point is 01:18:00 Those are the. Moss from the IT crowd. Yeah. Okay. That's interesting. I still haven't seen it. Part of the reason I've held off is because I just, you'll love it. I just haven't been in the mood for like an emotional Pixar movie and, you know, I don't know why.
Starting point is 01:18:14 But it's not. It's not emotional. Like, I mean, there's like little, no more than the other ones. Well. Like, I, I really. Yeah. But that's, yeah. If you're, if you're defensitized to the other ones, then, uh, mm-hmm.
Starting point is 01:18:29 Because Pixar movies know how to get me in. Yes. It's a blip. I mean, it's not like the whole thing's emotional. It's not like up in the first five seconds, you're crying your eyes off. Yeah. Um, they brought it in the, up in a chat. We're sitting through.
Starting point is 01:18:44 the credits. I was like, Trent Rezner. So he does the musical score. Yeah, he's awesome. Yeah. He does all sorts of scores these days. In fact, that's all he does. I think. That's right. Yeah, he and Atticus Ross did the score for Mank that I talked about last week
Starting point is 01:19:00 last week and I'm sure I'll talk about in two weeks. He's pretty much a shoe in for, if Fincher's doing a movie, he will do the crap. He'll do the music frame. Yes, exactly. Yeah. For sure. He's like Spilberg. Spillberg and. Red loss. seven said that it's less emotional than Inside Out, and I would have to agree.
Starting point is 01:19:19 It's just more heartwarming. Inside Out was pretty emotional. I had dad moments in that movie. Hard for me to deal with. All right, well, there you have it. Sol, the number one recommendal from Nicole. You have two today. I have two because I got a nice email from your wife, Scott.
Starting point is 01:19:39 Oh. And I made her a blanket. It and she just got it. So she wrote me and while I was making it, I was watching this. Let me find discord again. All right.
Starting point is 01:19:53 I can see, I need to move this. I'm sorry. It's in there somewhere. It's in there somewhere. There you go. Okay. I'm hitting play.
Starting point is 01:20:01 Here we go. Another Disney plus. Can we have a quiet here? Can we have a quiet? Quiet, quiet, please. Oh. Okay. Time again to raise the intellectual level of our program as our panel discusses questions of lasting importance. And our special guest tonight is Miss Tiffany Gonzalez.
Starting point is 01:20:23 Hello, hello, hello. Hello, Tiffany. And our question of lasting importance is conversation a dying art? What do you think, Tiffany? Well, Jess, care me. People just don't know how to talk to you speak. She doesn't say nothing. You just don't see. I mean, you talk to people, they'll listen. They'll look at you very bad. You're fabulous. I'm talking to this. I don't know who she is. I should. my parents would know who that is.
Starting point is 01:20:45 Carmen Miranda or something. I don't know. No, no, no. All right. That's clearly the Muppet show. That's Rita Marino. Yeah. Oh, that's Rita Marino. That is the Muppet show.
Starting point is 01:20:56 He got winner. Yeah, yeah. That's great. Yeah. Is it Marino or Marino? Because Kermit pronounced a different Moreno. Yeah, Marino would be the Spanish pronunciation would be Morino. So Kermit was kind of.
Starting point is 01:21:10 Correct is what you're saying. So as soon as Kermit said it. So Kermit, I was like, oh, wow, I've been mispronouncing her name for many, many years. So I've seen her live. I went to a cabaret in San Francisco and watched her perform. It was amazing. Wow. She's really something, that lady.
Starting point is 01:21:31 And I knew her from Oz on HBO. You didn't know her from Sesame Street? Yeah, she was on Sesame Street. I don't. I didn't remember her from the... Oh, maybe she was electric company. I didn't remember. Was it electric company?
Starting point is 01:21:45 Yeah. Oh, yeah. She did stuff with... Hey, you guys. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's right. And she was in West Side Story, right? Something like that.
Starting point is 01:21:54 Yep. Yeah, she was West Side Story. They actually do a skit in the first episode of the Muppet show where she's dancing with a adult-sized Muppet. And then they clip, they like, do a camera shift. and then he's like soft and she's throwing him around. It was silly. Nice.
Starting point is 01:22:14 I love it. I love the full side body body Muppets. Those are my favorite. Yes. They're creepy. Very cool. I think that's why I like them. So you have any problems where you're like, oh, this episode is missing in the song I like or any of those things people were worried about with this transfer?
Starting point is 01:22:32 I haven't. I think there's, from what I'm hearing, there's not a lot missing. the stuff that is missing, people are like, who cares? I did notice, like, on episode three, they had a disclaimer. Yes, I was going to ask you about this. They do this with old Mickey Mouse cartoons, and they, you know, talking about at the time, this came out. It's not acceptable today. It wasn't acceptable then.
Starting point is 01:23:00 Some of the stuff you're about to see is a little racist and insensitive. Enjoy it. They should do it that way. That'd be it. Basically, but they said, you know, we're leaving it in to, to, because it's part of history. Yes, exactly. Yeah, it's totally fine with me. I prefer this way.
Starting point is 01:23:18 This is how I like it. I like acknowledging it, but not erasing it. And they did all the Looney Tune stuff that's on HBO. But I will say, when I see those disclaimers, I'm like, on the hunt. Do you have the same thing? I don't know about you, but I'm like, where is it? I think Nicole's on Wi-Fi or something. I think something like that's going on.
Starting point is 01:23:38 I think so. Did you see that great freeze-frame show? Oh, that's probably what it is because you're... Can you stop your upload? Mark's over here uploading his whole damn archive of the Wood Whisper. Mark! I love that he yelled no. Turn off your backup.
Starting point is 01:23:56 It's all good. All right. Well, these are good. And if you want to follow these along and talk about them with more gusto on the internet, well, good thing Nicole puts them on her Twitter account. And apparently even those, it's good. It's a historical account of things I forgot I talked about. So go check it out at Nicole Spag on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:24:15 Nicole, anything else you want to mention? No, I don't have anything going on in my library. Tina just put something on your doorstep. Yay, I'm excited. A copy of the Shining. Hey, did you happen to see the quilp that I just made? I did. Very cool.
Starting point is 01:24:32 Did you see it, Scott? No. Where is it? It's on my Instagram. random account on Nicole's bag I love that stuff is this the one you're making out of shirts and stuff what's that is this the one you're making out of shirts yeah so I've been collecting video game shirts for like 15 years and uh they don't fit they never fit for women it's impossible to find a cool video game shirt that fits so I've just been holding on to them and I decided
Starting point is 01:24:58 turn it into a cool video game quilt lots of uh you ended up with a lot of fallout shirts I did I have a lot of fallout shirts because I had a lot of Luke. I had Luke crate for a while. So there's a lot. There's a number of Luke crate shirts. Yeah. Plus you just, you like fallout.
Starting point is 01:25:15 That's the other thing. I do. I do. Look at that. Isn't that awesome? That is so cool. Oh, I see some of Carter's art on there. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:22 Carter's in there. Yeah. There. There. A.e. Yeah. I got a little, um,
Starting point is 01:25:28 those, those chuckleheads over at night attack on there. I got that. Yeah. I got that at DragonCon. 2009? 2010 maybe very cool
Starting point is 01:25:38 yeah oh and there's and there's her 80s picture everybody right there thanks I appreciate that look at you rocking it out anyway
Starting point is 01:25:48 Nicole have a fantastic day and we'll see you soon next time by now alright prime we've done what we can do there now here's the deal
Starting point is 01:26:00 we have two more of these accent specials from TMS mashups Jamie. And today's is the Russian one. Tomorrow will be the Southern one. Okay. So I'm just warning you now. That's coming. Do they deserve warnings? Is that the deal? Yeah, we should do one of those Kermit warnings at the top of the show tomorrow for my, for my Southern accents, I think, maybe. I tend to be a little stereotyped with those. But these, you know, everyone loves a good Russian,
Starting point is 01:26:29 but I think we get away with Russian a little more than we do the Southern voice. So we're going to play it now. Enjoy it, everybody. This is our accent special, TMS mashup style, Russian. Bizarro, can't wait. Ikea tests. Bizarro sounds Russian. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:26:50 Thursday, back on Earth, here it's Glorps Day. Hello, happy Glorpe's Day to you. Aeroflot. Would you like to take a flat? Where would you like to flot to today? Where do you like to go flotting? Get on plane. All right.
Starting point is 01:27:01 He has... What video features Mario and Illudon? from World of Warcraft. Yes. Who knows what will happen? Some sort of charmander and green woman holding mushroom. Sorry, she is an other castle. Too much hassle to put clothes on.
Starting point is 01:27:17 Much more aerodynamic this way. Aerodynamic. The air can flow through bits and parts without any sort of resistance. The wind goes round man boots that I have. We heard from listener on smartphone device. Who told us what incident was like? Need to get monkey across all of Siberia. What do I do?
Starting point is 01:27:36 Jam it in luggage. Let's see here. The Russian Space Station sent frozen poop to NASA in honor of government shutdown. We sent frozen poop your way. Enjoy. You will like it. Ryan, let me tell you something. I am listener to TMS.
Starting point is 01:27:50 I am one-time listening to Frog fans' show. Quit splashing dice. It's my club. Too much hassle, nine of diamonds. And nine of diamonds, too much hassle. Don't you forget about me. Don't you? Don't you forget about me. Draw line between Top Gun and Iron Eagle.
Starting point is 01:28:09 Come up with Dean and we'll make game based on property. It's no problem. Uncle Godlead, ready to make game for you. My name is Ed? I like Zavodka. I will bring LPs because ZD isn't too much hassle to play on stage at Red Rocks. Please go to my merch table after show. They sell by... Left arm too tired. Can't give any more samples. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:28:31 No more samples. Can't do left hand. Getting blister on inside of hand. Oh no, walrus attacking from side. He punch hole in the boat. What are we going to do? He's creating a new butter dispenser. Oh my gosh, look at the butter, and the way the butter comes out.
Starting point is 01:28:46 You just squeeze it. This is the best gadget ever. This is the only gadget I use from now on. Gadget. The phone, turn me gay. Now I want too much asshole. Feel free to bleep that. That's fine, whatever.
