What is a cyberdeck and how can it blend makeup and neuromancer?
Why do we name birds, beetles, telescopes, and principles after people?
How does Amdahl's law explain when sometimes, 10 times faster?
It's not that fast.
I'm Dr. Nikki Ackermann's, a scientist.
And I'm Hwin-Wet-Dow, an engineer.
And we're here to spill the tea on questions just like this at the intersection of science and technology,
and we'll also add in quite a bit of nerdiness and fun.

To get salads a holiday look,
Start with Jello gelatin.
No.
In a world ruled largely by logic.
This is the morning stream.
Hello everybody. I'm welcome to TMS.
This is the morning stream for September 14th,
2006. I'm Scott Johnson.
That's Brian Abbott.
We're just about to wrap up the first half of the month.
Yay.
How's that feel?
I mean, it feels too fast is what it feels, Scott.
I thought August felt fast.
Oh, Lee.
I'm starting to think that this is just the new, this is how it feels now.
The new normal is, yeah.
We're going to say this in October.
Yeah.
And then we'll do it again in November.
And it'll feel worse in November somehow.
Right, right.
I don't like it.
I don't like it either.
Slow down time.
Slow down.
You move too fast.
Something, something in the web.
grass how's that song go?
Got to make the morning last.
Oh, that's it.
kicking down the cobblestones.
Something, something, something.
Feeling groovy.
There it is.
It's a good stoner music.
Guys, I have a warning for you.
If you see this, oh, did I not pull it?
Damn it.
I thought I transferred it.
Let me pull this real fast.
Did you get my photos too, by the way?
No, well, we're talking about.
Oh, no, but are they in text or then.
TMS, TMS Discord.
Oh, super easy to pull.
Okay, no problem.
Our little chance.
that discordia.
Me and the lame sauce that I am, I forgot to do that and that.
Okay, there we go.
Okay.
And then that.
Okay, so let me pull these up.
This will only take a moment.
I was at this, we talked about pre-show a little bit, but I went to this kids fair for Van and his school.
And it's all just, you know, various kinds of booths and crafts and stuff.
And it all goes to support the school.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like activities and trips and I don't know what all they're doing over there.
And so lots of fun.
Like here's Phoebe with some cotton candy being a dork.
you know, wearing her brother's van shirt
because anything with the fans on it, we buy it
because that's his name.
Yeah, of course.
Just dumb stuff like that.
But here is, oh, I forgot I took a picture of it.
Here are those kids selling those, those crappy,
I blocked the kids out because I don't want to put them under fire here.
Nope, nope, good call.
Look at those terrible coloring books, just awful.
The first glance, and you go, oh, AI up the wazoo.
And I didn't take a picture of their dad guy behind him, I should have.
Then you could have seen that tan I was talking about.
Right.
But anyway, we go to this thing and I saw something kind of horrifying.
And I wish I could have filmed it, but I got there and my phone out too late.
Also, it was one of those times where your phone, for whatever reason, your phone thinks that it's still, or that you're in the car and it says, are you driving or, you know, that whole thing?
So, like, made it even worse.
Oh, why didn't it send?
Gosh, dang, damn.
Okay, let's try that one more time.
Gosh, dang, dang.
damn. Gosh, dang, damn it. All right, here it is. Found it finally. So this is purely visual for the video people. Sorry, audio people. I'll try to describe it. But there was a cotton candy machine, the one that we saw Phoebe's thing from. And little wisps of it, as you can see, fall to the grass at the base of the cotton candy thing. Sure. Yeah. Of course. Normal. It's fine. Yeah. That stuff blows around like it's in one of those catch every dollar bill you can and the giant clear tube. Exactly. And the whole place smells a little like sweet, like.
like marshmallow roasting and, you know, it's a fun vibe, whatever.
I don't eat this sort of thing anymore, but we got in line for the kiddos and we're in there.
And then some of this is whispering onto the ground.
And right before this batch fell on the ground is when I saw the most horrifying thing,
these feral kids from nowhere.
And I mean like they came out of the, I mean, we're outside,
but came out of the woodwork, it felt like.
Yeah.
And dive bombed these wisps of freaking.
Of course they.
free cotton candy on the ground in the grass and they just like and ate it all up and I tried
so hard to get them on camera and I couldn't do it.
Also, you shouldn't film people's kids, but you know, I wanted to show.
I wanted to show the horrificness.
And I don't know whose parents were around or if they were around at all, but my gosh, dude,
that's disgusting.
That is.
Although, I mean, those are just resting on the top of the grass.
They're not down in the dirt.
They haven't been stepped on or jammed in or.
I just don't know what's happened there.
Like some recess somewhere, some kid puked there or some kid.
Oh, yeah, it could be.
Sure.
Who knows what kind of chemicals they're putting on the grass?
Yeah.
Help it grow.
These are the things I think of.
Yeah, sure.
It is nasty.
But anyway, it was a fun time.
We had a good time there and watch out for those kids.
Also, when we got there, the first thing we hear,
and there's a big crowd of people coming through the gates.
And the gates are either to get a ticket.
a wristband or oh i still have that mark on me from the other thing i went to anyway um i keep
thinking it's something wrong with my skin but it's a stamp it's a hand stamp it's a handstand yeah
okay you're okay yeah everything's okay and then the other line was for volunteers well it got a little
bunged up early on we got there early and suddenly we hear bam bam bam bam bam big loud kind of like
gunshot sounds and we went bleh we're at a school it's full of kids the outdoor
place is just this closed-in thing with all this stuff. And I'm like, you know, every parent there,
including me, gets just this feeling of, oh, no, like you're ready for the worst, ready to hit
the dirt, cover the kids, whatever. This freaking guy doing the balloon machine over there couldn't
figure out how to stop before us too late. So he kept popping balloons. So you'd have like two on
there at once doing two tanks and shh, bam. And it's like, because he's not able to pay, have you
ever tried doing that where like oh kim i'll grab you a soda too and you go to those fountain machines
and you get ice for one and then while you're getting ice for your other cup you're putting that
first one under the the diet coke or whatever and filling that one up then you're getting ice and then
you end up with too much ice and you're not paying attention to the diet coke and it's overflowing that's what
that guy's doing exactly too many balloons at once your two brains your halves of your brains can't
as much as we think we're good at this sort of thing we're kind of bad at doing the two at once and that's what he
was doing. And he kept doing it. So it was like four or five of these. And they were kind of rapid,
like bam, bam, or pop. Yeah. And it made everybody just go, oh, yeah, we were all on, yeah,
we were all on, like, serious alert and, freaking dummy. Piss me on. Oh, my God. Then we decided to go
somewhere where I got this. Check this out. This was kind of, this is, this is almost like a mystery date.
We didn't plan it that way, but Kim didn't tell me where she was taking me. But she took me to the
Um,
odd of these and curiosity expo.
Yeah.
Where I got this hand sculpted little skull man.
That's cool.
Yeah.
This local guy.
I like the color on that.
Yeah,
that blue is cool,
right?
It's like turquoise almost.
But,
um,
he,
he had a ton of these skulls.
That's all he does.
That's kind of the vibe there.
Everybody has some weird thing they do.
Yeah.
He's this older guy that lives out here.
And he had one that half of it looked like Eddie the beast from an iron maiden album.
Oh,
really?
Yeah.
And I go.
And he looked about,
I don't know,
15 years older than me or something.
Uh-huh.
And I said,
I said,
Eddie the Beast from like Iron Maiden.
And he goes,
yeah, man.
And he puts his hand up like this.
He goes,
yeah.
And I go,
oh, sweet,
I recognize it in high school.
He was,
he was the bomb.
He goes,
oh, man,
tell me about it.
We all drew him on our notebooks in high school.
Yeah.
This guy was like an old schooler.
Anyway,
so that's one of the things I got
while I was there was this cool skull.
But they had all this taxidermy and all this weird stuff,
even a taxidermy clash he could like sign up for.
Lots of glass jars.
with the fetuses of weird animals in it or weird creatures.
Yeah, like frogs all spayed out and preserved in their gut form and stuff like that.
This is just some, these are two beetles.
Because I thought that was the least defensive thing I could show on camera.
Those are the two non-surviving beetles.
Yeah, these are the two that are still, well, the two that are in the grave.
This is how we preserve their memory.
But yeah, 180 bucks for this thing for these two beetles.
anyway we didn't buy that obviously
I was like no way but they had
all these animals and like
little furry animals and rabbits and stuff
and most of these booths
claim that these are like
roadkill or right humane
or like you know not not killed
for this but died some other way
and they they died of natural
causes and then they got the
bodies but some of these places were pretty
sketch Brian like there was
there was one booth that had a bunch of
a whole bunch of tax
like little angry fox heads and poseable gallagate full-sized alligators and junk like this a full dog
skeleton or something and it and i got closer to that one and the stink coming off of that boot
really yeah oh that's bad there should not be if you're taxiderming right yeah that's i mean i felt
like they i feel like perhaps whatever right means they were they were wrong they were not doing it
right? And it was like a skunky, dead carcass-y, nasty smell like you were at a taxidermist
itself, right, where they do all the work and everything. Yeah. And I got in then, I went,
Kim, come get a whiff of this. And she goes, not on my life. And she came, she just walked past.
But it was foul, dude. So I made me wonder, some of these guys, I don't know how well they vet them
or whatever. Yeah. But what I really like, so that was, you know, take it or leave it. You're probably
people aren't going to like all the smelling animals and stuff.
But the art and most of them are locals.
Amazing stuff, dude.
People I've never seen.
Incredible stuff.
Like just really dark, twisted business, which I, you know, I'm known to prone to do here and there.
And just really like to talk to a bunch of artists.
That was a lot of fun.
This guy did these SpongeBob takes, which I thought were awesome.
Look at that.
That's cool.
It's like a nasty decayed out looking thing.
There's Patrick.
It's all gross.
He was really cool.
I talked to a guy who makes tabletop games as well as the art for him
and try to get him on a show.
And he was so excited.
He's like, oh, I've been on these other podcasts.
Oh, this one guy sculpts.
He takes old Maxwell House coffee cans from the 50s and then puts the
Audrey, too.
Audrey, two and these were expensive as hell.
Like I want to save a thousand bucks or something for those.
Anyway.
Wow.
It was cool.
Sure.
That's a pretty.
Then on the way home, we saw it.
I saw a car with Skyhawks name on it for no reason.
But it's not Skyhawk.
No, it's not him.
But he was thrilled to see it when I sent it to him.
He was pretty sure.
Yeah, Tina and I went to, she took me on a mystery date to this back in 2021.
I was just like looking up the photos.
I put up.
I thought this was familiar.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I forgot.
You went to this because Denver's in like two weeks and I was going to say,
hey, Brian's on your way to you, but you've been to this thing.
We've been to this thing.
Not since 2021, though.
I'm kind of surprised we haven't because we had a great time.
I just put a
shot
That's cool
Yeah
There's a day
No it's gonna be while
Barry's here
Oh no
It's gonna be
It's gonna be the weekend
Before Barry's here
Barry
Barry
I'm pulling it up here
Here's the image Brian just posted
Yeah see this is a lot of it
A lot of this stuff
Where it's like
Just jars of weird
Creatures in
formaldehyde
Yeah and some of the people
Running the booths
Would not match the description
of what I was seeing.
It would be like kind of a normal looking,
like a guy you'd see at Starbucks checking his watch and waiting for his order.
Yeah.
And then he's selling, you know, giant fish eyes and squid feet and whatever.
So weird.
That's awesome, though.
So you guys got up to some foolery too?
We did.
Yeah.
I took Tina on a mystery date.
Every time we go driving in the countryside,
side will pass an alpaca farm and she'll just, you know, gush over how cute they are.
Just, oh, I want to go pet those alpacas or the llamas or whatever.
So I took her to an alpaca farm where you actually get to hand feed the alpacas.
And they come right up to you.
They give you as many bags of this feed as you want.
And these guys will come right up to you, eat out of the palm of your hand.
Tina wasn't sure about the teeth with the, um,
with her lymph nodes being gone on one side of her body,
she's like, if I get scratched or, you know,
infected or something on that side, I'm done for it.
So she started using this little plastic bowl.
They also can give you that to feed these guys.
Oh, that little pink thing she's holding here.
Yeah, exactly.
It's like a little, it's actually, it's funny.
I think these are little rubber things that you use for poaching eggs.
You put a little oil in there, put the egg in there,
and then let that float in boiling water.
It makes it easy to poach the eggs.
I love that.
How come these all look like teenage kids in high school, these haircuts?
Right, those haircuts?
Yeah.
We asked about that, by the way.
The hair, so when you shear a llama, or an alpaca or a llama, you leave that lead singer
the pretenders
kind of
hairstyle
up there on the top
and it's to show
what the alpacus fur is
so if you get a
if you get a
yeah like this one
I love how they left the sides
on this one too
yeah it's gonna say
that is a choice man
yeah
really cute
just freaking adorable
but it's so that
buyers can see
what the
what the fur is like
so you shear the rest of them
yeah
but you leave that
so the buyer can say
and they also don't like
being pet on the top
of their heads. So you, the first thing you want to do is dig your fingers into that hair and go,
you know, you're not supposed to. You, um, you can scratch them on the neck. I took this one.
This guy was hanging out. That's an amazing shot, by the way. It is. This guy is just so freaking
adorable. It's good boca on that guy. He knew how to, he knew how to pose for the camera. Yeah,
he's grinning for you. That's awesome. Yep. That's cool. It's just like a play,
just a farm that just a farm five minutes away from the house. Like,
was perfect for this.
And it was like, what time do we need to leave for mystery day?
I said, about five minutes to four.
And then we went up there.
And then we got some pizza and salad at this place near us.
Nice.
It was a fun date.
And then came home and watched a weird TV show that I'll probably talk about on the
film set up the substack, this DTF St. Louis.
Oh, it's so weird.
It is really weird.
It's good.
We watched the whole thing and loved it.
But yeah, nobody, nobody in there is phoning it in.
I mean, freaking everybody is doing a great, great job.
Linda Cardalini.
Jason Bateman.
She's freaking scary in this thing.
She is scary in this thing.
She's really hamming up a character.
Maybe her Crystal Lake thing will be more of that because she plays the mom, right?
Yeah, Jason Voorhe's his mom.
Yeah.
Curious about that.
Yeah.
Anyway, but so came home, watch that and had a nice little mystery date.
But yeah, next month is hers.
She gets October.
We're going to see what she comes up with.
Nice.
The pressure's on, Tina.
Pressure's on.
They also had goats, by the way,
and the goats were coming up to us
and looking at us with those weird eyes that they have.
Oh, I love a good goat.
Goat eye.
Yeah.
I'm into it.
It's like they're looking widescreened.
So we both saw goats.
Yours were alive.
The ones I saw were all dead and stuffed.
Right.
Yes.
Very, very true.
And smelled funny, if I'm honest.
Yeah.
Well, these goats, I guess they didn't smell funny,
but, you know, there was poop around.
You can't go to alpaca farm and not see a pile of poop.
That's true.
But it's the smell of life, you know?
That's right.
Exactly.
It's...
Upward mobility.
They got a poo.
I love it.
I'm a fan.
I'm a fan of go poo.
All right, guys, look, we do a fun thing here on Mondays, and you may be familiar with it.
We're going to try it right now, and we're going to do that by playing this here song right here.
Yes, that's right.
It's time for us to play a little countdown.
Monday morning countdown.
That's right.
Do dogs have brains.
All that stuff.
We're going to do with Brian Dunaway, if he's willing.
Hi, Brian, hi, Scott and Brian.
So is dogs have brains this week?
It's frogs.
It's frogs.
It's frogs.
It's do frogs have brains.
It was dogs.
I mean, it was dogs.
We stole it from them.
But, yeah, it's frogs now.
It's frogs now.
Hey, we're going to play this game.
Are you, do podcasts have brains?
No.
Are you ready to play this game or am I the only one here ready to really put it on the line today?
How about I say it like this?
This.
Okay.
There you go.
Do it that way.
Sounds like you're both ready for this.
Yeah, we're both ready.
This is great.
Although you sounded like you're doing Mission Impossible a little bit, but that's fine.
It's totally fine.
Maybe I'm not as real.
Let me go back.
I'll come back in about five minutes.
Let me really.
All right.
We'll get choked up the pipes.
Sounds good.
Brian,
but will you explain how this game works and what we're doing?
Yeah,
welcome to do frogs have brains,
a countdown style trivia game.
I've got 20 questions across very,
subjects, including science, art, entertainment, history, and more.
You guys are each you can get 90 seconds to answer as many of those questions as you can,
but, you know, if you don't know an answer, just say skip or pass to go to the next one.
While Scott's answering his questions, we're going to put Brian into a soundproof isolation booth
so he can't hear Scott's answers.
The player with the most correct answers after 90 seconds wins the prize for their contestant
and contestants have been pulled from our Patreon supporters at patreon.com slash TMS.
Scott is playing for Eric Hans.
Hello, Eric.
Hence.
Brian is playing for Sean Bloom.
Oh, hi, Sean Bloom.
Bloom.
Sean's a regular at the table.
It's nice to see his name.
Yes, for sure.
Yeah.
Okay.
So here we go.
Good luck.
Brian, we're going to, yeah, we're going to mute you.
You're going to mute you really.
See you guys.
Let's be honest.
It's you.
Yep.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye, bye.
All right.
If this works, I'm going to start the timer after I asked the first question.
and if you're ready, here we go.

but let me add you a point here.
There we go.
And clear timer.
All right.
Very good, five points.
Tricy, geez.
They were, yeah, some tricky ones in here.
I feel good about it.
That's my highest score so far in this game.
So I'll take it.
Yeah.
It's very good.
Good. Let's get Brian in here and see how he does.
Very well, I shall release.
Next week we're to have a whole bunch of different ones in here.
Sweet. Oh, hi, Brian. Hello. Hello. Hello, Brian.
Hi. Welcome back. Hi. Hi. Mark.
Scott got five in 90 seconds. Nice.
Did well. You got your work cut out for you. If you're ready, I will start the timer after I asked the first question. You ready?
I'm ready.
Okay.
Sometimes called the Gravity Grand Prix,
what kids car race takes place every August in the hilly, Akron, Ohio?
A pine wood derby.

what do you call a beam that spans an opening supported by walls or columns i'll let you finish
if you got this one um uh is it it's it's a it's a trust is a yeah something like that
a joist is that okay no no it's not but that's all right uh you still won here's uh let's
go through some of these answers here.
I accepted Pinewood Derby.
They're saying soapbox derby, but I think they're pretty much the same thing.
We call it Pinewood Derby around here.
I've always heard soapbox derby.
Yeah, I think it's probably regionally called different things.
When a weasel turns white, he becomes an ermine or an ermine.
So, Irman.
White, white weasel.
Yeah.
A whole other name for an animal.
That's weird.
Yeah.
All right.
In the 1960s, you figured out that the ball typewriter,
all the letters of numbers were on a ball that spun around.
Have you ever seen it, Scott?
I have seen it.
Yeah, I forgot that.
I didn't know it was IBM, though.
I had no idea.
Yeah, Nuri al-Maliki became prime minister of Iraq, the Iraq.
The Eastern European suit made from meat, beetroot, and white cabbage.
It's delicious, and it's called borsh.
Oh, okay, so it's not gross.
It's not gross.
In the chess move, you use the rook and the king kind of not really swapping places, but they kind of jump over each other.
called castling.
I've never even heard the term.
Weird.
Buzz Aldrin's real first name is Edwin.
Edwin Aldrin.
Oh, okay.
The Turkish national heroes named
Ataturk, father of the Turks.
Three crosses make up the Union Jack.
The viral disease infantile paralysis
is known as polio.
Oh, polio.
You got Benjamin Franklin Pierce.
Do you know why I know about the Union Jack?
Why do you know that?
Zoe.
Zoe is always telling me it's wrong in video games that we play.
Zoe brings Bacon tells you that.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, of course you know.
Oh, that's upside down or all that doesn't have enough.
That's got too many.
I thought it was two.
I mean, it was only one off, but still.
No, it's like it's cross, cross, cross.
Yeah.
And then a beam that spans an opening supported by walls or columns is called a lintel or a header.
Lintel.
A lintel.
I thought it was a support beam.
I guess it is.
Right.
Yeah.
I mean, I thought trust was like, that's what I would have guessed was trust.
It's like, yeah, see, trust, but that's not it.
Well, that brings us to the end of the game, Brian, with six to Scott's five, very close one.
Man.
You get a victory pickle.
Good job.
And Sean Bloom is going to get a couple victory pickles in the name of games, Meganoid and Elderborn.
Great games.
Good.
Megnoid.
But Eric Hans, you're getting a copy.
of gunslugs rogue tactics all of these courtesy of grievous also quite good that second game or that
third game you all won today as usual do you have a pistol whoops that's the wrong one
no that's me congratulations there you go I get that one uh and I really thought I had it this time
it's my highest score of five but I didn't get there that's I think that's my highest score as well
now you got six now you have a new high score is that bio car ever scored I think so what's
that bioCal explains I say biocar
BioCow explains that Pinewood is the car you make from a small block of wood.
Sometimes you put a CO2 cartridge in there to make it go.
Yeah, yeah.
Is that what we're talking about?
Is the one you get in.
Oh.
I thought maybe they just called it Pinewood.
So, but it kind of would have the same winner.
It would just be four to five right now.
Right.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Yep.
Exactly.
I'm not.
Yeah.
No change.
Yeah.
Anyway.
Kept everybody the same win-ins.
But, yeah.
So that makes sense now that you say it.
I always something else.
I always because there's no, I mean, it's called the Gravity Grand Prix.
I guess that's it is because the only thing propelling it is the hills in Akronoma.
When you said Gravity Grand Prix, I thought you were talking about the little, I don't know.
I thought it was, because you still do the gravity thing because you got to do the weights.
I've only ever done the Pinewood Derby.
Yeah, Pinewood Derby, we didn't scouts, but it was actually, you couldn't do the CO2 thing unless you cheated.
So you had to.
Yeah.
So my dad did that as a joke, not to compete, but to just like rip through the thing.
And other dads did it too.
But most of the time it was about those little lead pieces you would embed in the car and you couldn't exceed a certain weight.
And so.
Okay.
Yeah, it was a whole thing.
But I thought they had the same name.
So that's why I said it.
Because I knew what you meant.
I knew it was them in them.
You know, like I just heard gravity and car and.
Yeah.
Unless those children are super teeny tiny.
You're not putting them in a pine wood.
They're big boxes for soap, man.
If you can fit in them.
Geez. I don't think they do that anymore. I don't think you buy your soap that way anymore.
No, I don't think so either. Well, keep the traditional live Ohio, Akron.
Well, that's awesome. Congratulations to our winners. You'll see those codes in your little private messages there in Patreon today.
And watch for those. Big thanks for playing with us. And Brian Dunaway, you know, you were all right today. You did good.
Oh, I did great. Did it right. Yeah. Both did good. Yeah. I think we did all right.
did a little better.
Yeah.
I can accept that.
It was a good showing from both of you today.
Yeah.
I was only.
I figured you'd beat me because I'm like when they asked the mask quit,
the mash question,
I was like,
yeah.
I'm gonna,
I'm gonna miss that in a way.
Yeah,
that one came out of me like it was like second nature.
It was his natural came right out of you.
Yeah.
I watched a lot of mash growing up,
I think.
But now you know,
it's Edwin,
Aldrin.
Yeah,
I'm gonna remember that.
He's still with us,
right?
I'm not like,
I like beep.
I prefer beep.
Aljard. Yeah, I said, I said, I said beef, Brian.
I'd say beef. That's great.
I said, what did I say?
Buzzard. Buzzard. Buzzard. Yeah.
Yeah. Buzzard.
Buzzard. Is he still living?
Or is he?
Stephanie Inopet says he's still alive.
Oh, yeah. He's still around.
Boy, the number one search when I search for it was Buzz Aldrin's death.
Oh, gosh.
And the second most common one is Buzz Aldrin's deathbed confession.
That's just some people trying to get some fake and new landing confirmation.
But he's like what?
he's got to be almost 100 this dude.
I would think so. Yeah.
Born in 1930. He's almost as old as the moon at this point.
He's probably still in his 90s in. Probably was born in the 30s.
Yeah, 96.
How that works?
96.
Yeah.
That's pretty old.
Yeah.
A good, nice, ripe old age for, but when he punched that guy,
rooted for him, and I'll do it again.
Yeah.
Dunnoy, we're going to see each other again Wednesday when we play another game here.
We got other stuff that day, too.
We'll talk more about it Wednesday when you get here.
But in the meantime, would you do me one favor?
And that is.
Kiss our butts.
All right. He's out.
That's the end of that.
Yeah.
Thank the Lord on high.
A reminder, if you guys have games sitting around that you got from a humble bundle
or you just need to unload them or whatever,
we're not short or anything right now,
but it's just a good reminder to send them on in.
You can send them directly to Brian and I via Discord or email.
Either one of us, it doesn't matter.
We just paste them into this dock and then we get to them.
And if you're not going to use them, great place for them to go.
So do it.
All right.
I think that'll do it for that.
How about we do a little bit of this right here?
Love that idea.
Right here.
Well, what do you recommend?
Hello, everybody.
This is recommendals.
We have on the line with this one Nicole Spagnolo who's joining us all the way from Missouri.
Hi.
How's it going?
Can you hear me?
Yeah.
Where are you?
Are you in a car?
No, I'm in the office.
Oh, you're on a weird room mic or something.
like a no i'm using my my supposedly awesome headphones that i got from apple oh you sound pretty good
it doesn't i'm not sure it's piping through there though i feel like it might be using a laptop
i tap which you're you're oh i guess if they're in your ears you're not going to tap them i'm just
i'm just calling oh we can hear we can hear live spagnolo tech support going yeah i love it i love it
she doesn't have to yell mark she can just say it it's right there yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
input input oh there it is hi hello i see it switched but i don't hear you now
i think it's his earbuds they went over to it's your it's your earbos yeah it's on his
air pods so mark what have you watched recently that you enjoyed let's do comic dorks let's go here
we go i love this two of the most technical technically aligned people
I know, but we always end up with Nicole,
Mike issues and it cracks me.
I don't want it to ever change.
This is not me complaining.
No, definitely not.
No.
Yeah.
I don't think they hear me.
Plus, we hear you a little bit.
We hear you, but I don't think you hear us.
Oh, no, you can hear us.
Yeah.
We still hear you, we hear you on Mark's air,
air pods, I think.
Because they're definitely not on your head.
What the hell, though, setting?
Oh, wait, that might be better.
Hello?
Is that better?
No.
It's still like, it's like the room one, but it's fine.
It's still the room.
It'll hold.
This one, this one's way better, though.
It sounds, yeah.
Well, it's better than what we had previously.
This one's good.
Don't, uh, don't go changing.
Yeah.
Don't go changing, he said.
It's fine.
Yeah, this will work.
Yeah, we'll hear all the farts and stuff if you make those.
That's right.
Yeah.
We'll be able to hide those.
No.
All right.
All right.
Well, this works just fine.
Why are you in Google settings?
It's okay.
Sorry.
Technical issues with Nicole.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He might be right because if you're in Chrome, Chrome,
it's Chrome taken whichever mic you tell it to use in the little settings thing.
Oh, yeah, I am in Chrome.
Yeah, it's fine, though.
Chrome's actually the best for the quality.
It's just sometimes it's fiddly with the choose-in-what-mic mic it is.
Anyway, it doesn't matter because we have you here and it's recommendals time.
Yeah, it's time.
Let's do it.
Let's do some recommendals.
It's that time of the month, everybody.
We watch some streaming stuff and we think you guys might like what we watched.
And today we're going to start with Brian because that's the,
traditions. O'Brien, start us off.
Yes, I watched a limited series
on Apple TV, seven
episodes, and
really, really enjoyed it.
And we'll talk about it after. Here we go.
Something I need you to move for me.
For us.
You didn't.
It was an easy left.
Just a little off the top over time.
It was very disciplined.
Did she know?
Mm-mm.
This was all me.
My guess is what she and I got put away.
his people did the accounting,
discovered the deficit,
and he's bringing her to answer for it.
It's okay.
No, it's not okay.
They're going to come after you.
That's not my concern right now.
We.
They're going to come after me.
We're ahead of them.
We.
I am not, okay?
Apparently, I am way behind.
This takes care of both of us
for the rest of our lives.
Lives.
You know they're going to kill us, right?
This is Marshall Givens and Furiosa go to town.
That's right.
Exactly what it is.
Cool.
Yeah, that's Anya Taylor Joy and Timothy Allifant.
Father and daughter in the TV show Lucky on Apple TV Plus.
It's just TV right now.
They finally drop the plus and said, yeah, we don't care if people think, you know,
they get confused with the device versus the TV.
They do anyway.
Yeah.
Right.
May as well just call it the same thing.
Lean into it. Exactly.
Yeah, Anya Taylor Joy plays Lucky.
The daughter of a con man
who's kind of taught her everything he knows.
He's in jail. He's incarcerated.
Was that conversation from a jail visit?
That was a flashback.
That one, I think, actually, that is from a jail visit,
but there's some flashback conversations as well and more later on.
And at Benning plays her.
mother-in-law, her, his ex-wife, and William Fickner.
Oh, I didn't know who's in this. I love him. He's good and he plays one of my favorite
Fickner characters of all time. He's really, really good. That's great. I never tire that guy.
He's so cool. This is your, you're on the Lamb series. It is like she is constantly running,
trying to get away from Annette Benning, who basically just wants to take her out, get the money back,
that Timothy Allifant stole
and
get the money back by any means necessary,
even working with some shady folks
that kind of would give
John Hamm's Fargo
ranch a run for its money.
It's really tense at times,
the stuff that they do. And, man,
there's one guy, who's the guy? It's,
is that Eric Lange?
Lang.
Stephen Lange?
no eric lang i think let me look at a photo of this guy he plays kind of the no no oh no you know
eric lang though um this is the guy he was uh rid ritzinski on lost um he was in brand new cherry
flavor as the really slimy oh uh yeah uh studio head he's amazing i love that guy he is really good
yeah um yeah who is the i don't know if all find it and
time to to worry about it. But there's a another guy who always plays this kind of menacing character
and he's really, really good. Nice. But yeah, no, this is this is great. Seven episodes,
it's a quick watch, but it's a, it's a, an intense one thing after another watch. So it is a
constant like, all right, take your breath, but just really quickly because the next episode is
going to kind of pick up right where it left off. She starts off in Vegas and has to make her way
across the desert.
But she's picked up a lot of things from her dad
on how to get out of these situations.
Like that shot you're looking at right there
where she's in the trunk of a car,
how she can get out of this one.
Well, she looks good getting out of a car
in a trunk.
Most of us would look so bad in a trunk.
I know, no, she looks better in a trunk
than most of us do on our best days.
Did you guys watch the meal with her?
did not. Yes. I missed it. I have not seen it, but I've read lots of Wikipedia and I've seen
clips, so I feel like I got the gist. Yeah, it's obviously, you know, it's definitely a
symbolism for classes and society and stuff like that. But it's got your Nux and Furiosa together
again and, and Ray Fines. Yeah, I mean, good cast, right? Really good cast. It's,
Wasn't it a famous director?
Famous-ish director?
Oh, good question.
I don't know.
Let's see.
Let's see.
I know.
I still, even though I haven't seen the movie.
Yeah.
I still don't understand how Ray Fines has this staff that is just so devoted to him.
He's like a Michelin star, like a highly regarded chef.
Oh, it's the private, private island.
It's the Mike Malad, and he did, he was, uh, he directed a ton of succession, shameless, uh, game of Thrones.
He's just known for like being like very prolific, like, uh, TV guy, director.
Gotcha.
But the scene with her at the very end always makes me want a cheeseburger.
Yeah.
No, it's, it's, it's another foodie film.
God, was there where I talked about recently?
It's like a chef with Favro.
And Roy Choi.
There are some films that you like watch.
And in addition to getting a really good story, you come out of thinking, I want to make that freaking grill cheese sandwich that they just made it.
I can't swear to something.
Oh, my God, right?
I know.
You guys just talking about it.
I'm ready for a grinch.
Yeah.
I remember what it was something that I recently recommend or talked about.
Maybe it was a film sack or something like that that had a big foodie component to it.
and, uh, or TV show or something like that.
But dang it.
Yeah, I'm susceptible, apparently to those kinds of things.
Hmm.
Well, that's good.
So you would, uh, is, is it?
I would recommend lucky for sure.
Like a heist movie if you had to give it a genre or whatever we call it.
I mean, it's an on the lamb movie.
It's not like a, you know, planning a heist kind of,
you know, we have to get into this safe kind of thing.
It's more like a, I have to get away.
Um, and then pull a con.
that that aspect of it is kind of heisty.
Okay. All right.
So, yeah. Yeah.
I'm kind of, I was all in anyway.
I was going to see this at some point, but it's good to hear.
It's good.
You and Kim would definitely enjoy it.
It's a good crime thriller that you don't have to worry about.
All right, well, how are they going to do a second?
Is there going to be a second season?
Are they, you know, nope, it's a limited series.
They're just planned for seven episodes and one and done.
it's got to be better than the gorge which is the last thing i saw her in and i did not like the
gorge the gorge bum yeah it was a bummer it had some had some good moments but uh yeah it's a really
neat concept i'll say that it was a neat concept and also apple tv and a little bit of a
misstep from apple tv i agree yeah a rare a rare a rare misstep it's like like it's not
it's not bad it's just like i don't know i don't know what to call it the two main characters
what's his name and her are great like
There's chemistry there.
All that stuff worked.
It's just when they filled out of the thing, it got weird.
I don't know.
It's the Maverick kid.
The hell is that guy's name?
Yeah, what is his name?
The drummer, the drum movie with J.K. Simmons, whiplash.
Oh, Wiplash.
Oh, yeah.
Miles Teller.
Miles Teller.
I keep here and he might be done with everything because he inherited like $500 million from something.
Some family connection to some business or something.
His family invented the automator.
teller. That's not what it is. Is it really? It's named after them. Yeah, it's, uh, it's not named after
the person at the bank. It's named after their last name teller. I didn't know that. That must be it.
I made the whole damn thing upscale. All right. You were being very genuine about it. What a jerk.
Yeah. I, uh, I think whatever it is, though, he, it seems up, it seems to me maybe not true.
He's got eight upcoming movies. I think he may have just been some bullshit. So he just stockpiled or something.
Didn't he do warm bodies? No, that was Nicholas.
That was the other guy in the menu.
I kind of, oh.
That's who I was thinking.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, different dude.
But same general generation, you know?
Yeah.
I'd watch them together.
One was a Mr. Fantastic that we're trying to forget.
And the other one is Alex Luther that did a pretty damn good job.
Pretty damn good.
I really liked him as Lex.
I did too.
I keep thinking we might see him pop through it.
the lanterns or uh yeah it's not a spoiler to say something hasn't happened on lanterns right
that's not a spoiler no i don't think it is yeah you know i'm realizing what is a spoiler though
is um is looking ahead when you look at a show you're going to watch looking ahead and seeing
how many episodes it is because that aforementioned d tf st louis um if you go in thinking it's
you know it may be three episodes or two episodes or short series then the stuff that they
lead you to believe in the first episode
you know says oh crap but then you're thinking
well this is seven episodes there's no way
that this is as cut and dry as that or else they'd have
nothing to do for the next six episodes yeah especially
when you know it's a one-off too it's important right is that
st louis show does that have jason baitman in it it does yeah why is he
like obsessed with missouri because it is ozark yeah i don't know
are you obsessed with yeah what's your deal didn't you move there because
of Ozark, you're like, I want to go there.
I grew up here.
Oh, that's right.
Because he looks like, Jason Bayman looks like, you know, a Midwest kind of dude.
Sure.
You know, there might be something to it.
I don't know.
Maybe he, maybe he's got an affinity for it.
What is the St. Louis show?
Because I haven't even watched it.
It is about.
It's a drug?
No, it's sex.
It's sexy times.
Yeah.
It's about a, it's about a, it's about an app that, uh, it's about, it's about, uh, it's about
app that married people can use to find quick hookups.
And it's called DTF St. Louis.
But you'd gather from the show that there are only four people on it, on that app.
Yeah.
And it's weird, man.
It is a weird movie or show.
It is a weird show.
It's good, but it's weird.
David Harbor is also really good at it.
Very odd.
There are a number of famous people that have come from St. Louis.
That's true.
St. Louis's, I could name at least two.
Nicole Spagnolo.
Mark Spagnolo, you may have heard of him.
He's in New Jersey.
Who would you?
I know there are.
I can probably dig down and find him.
John Hamm.
Kevin Klein.
Kevin Klein.
He looks like a Missouri guy.
He does look like a Missouri guy.
John Goodman.
Yeah.
He actually has a house I've heard in Winstville somewhere.
Nice.
Chuck Barry.
Kevin Klein, born in St. Louis, Missouri.
Oh, no way.
In 1947.
Yeah.
All right.
I'm trying to think of it.
There's a lot more than, I mean, Nelly.
Nelly?
Yeah, who can forget, Nelly.
It's getting hot in here.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
We know the one.
That's pretty good.
I'll stop the same of those people.
All right.
Well, let's go.
So again, this is, where is it, Brian?
Lucky.
Lucky is on Apple TV.
All right.
Excellent.
Nicole, let's get to yours.
What do you got?
If you're brand new to this segment, it's always
tangents.
And we have, you know, we try to have a structure, but it never really works.
So my recommendal, you said somebody already recommended it, Scott.
I thought we had, but we don't.
We didn't.
Somewhere it got talked about, in some detail, we talked about it on some show, and I could
not tell you where.
I don't remember where we talked about it.
But anyway, we canceled Netflix.
Yeah.
But my son wanted to watch.
I don't know what shows. So Mark decided to start Netflix back up with ads and holy
crap is it awful. But Netflix with ads. Oh my God is the worst. It's the worst.
It's pretty bad. I tried to watch the Mr. T documentary. It's only 48 minutes long and I
swear to God it had like four different chunks of ad stops in it. And I'm
like, why is this documentary, have so many, whereas I watch a movie, like the one I'm going to
recommend, it only had the ads in the beginning.
And when you pause it now, there's a huge ad.
Yeah, there's pause ads, they do.
Oh, really?
I want to say Paramount at the, and there's some other one where you have a free tier like that.
Yeah, Peacock did that or Freakock did that.
Yeah.
Where when you pause, you got like a Liberty Mutual.
mutual ad that you could even choose, like it turned into a trivia game or something.
Yeah, it was very weird.
Yeah.
I don't like it.
Yeah.
You know who gets, it's funny because Tooby's like all ads, like there is no pay here.
And they have less ads than the Netflix with ads does.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And you're paying for it.
That's aft.
Aft.
Yeah.
Anyway.
Everybody in the chat's like, you know, use this browser.
I'm not watching Netflix on my computer.
I'm watching it on my TV.
Yeah, what are you, an animal?
Oh, wait, I watch a lot of, I watch a lot of stuff on my computer.
I know, I don't watch on my computer.
I just, there's something.
I don't know.
I have, like, I have a flow and, like, I have to be in a mode.
So, like, when I watch this movie, I'm, I like to experience movies.
I mean, I'm an older, I'm older, so I have my.
You've got your routine.
I get it.
Yeah, yeah.
Where my kids, they're probably have no problem watching.
on a computer or on a
that's what they grew up
with an iPad, some sort of portable device.
Did you, when you signed up for the Netflix
with ads, by the way, did you use T-Mobile?
I get it for free.
No.
Are you on T-Mobile?
Oh, okay.
Oh, you're so offended.
Why are you so offended by T-Mobile?
My goodness.
Oh, gosh, yeah.
You hate the color pink?
You hate the color pink?
They're the best carrier I've ever had.
They must be suck him.
Yeah, we really like them.
Real quick, you missed a bunch of names.
Mark Twain, Walt Disney, T.S. Eliot.
Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote all them books.
I like Ler Ingalls Milder.
Yeah, me too. And tell her. I like it when she was working to do.
Brad Pitt, freaking Don Cheadle, Jenna Fisher.
Cheryl Crow.
Chappelle Chappelle. Chappell Rhone.
M&M. He grew up in Detroit, but he was born in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Cheryl Crowell, Ziza.
I don't know who that is.
Crowl.
Crow.
Is that like Dave?
Dave.
Yeah, Dave Kroll.
Jesse James and Harry S. Truman.
My lord.
Yeah.
All right.
Sorry, I just want to give Missouri its full deal there.
All right.
Let's get to what you watched that I'm sure we've talked about but never recommendal.
What is it?
Or should we play the thing first?
How do you want to do it?
What do you want to do?
Yeah, go ahead.
It's on Netflix.
It's a movie.
I didn't really, you know, all I thought about was a documentary that we'll talk about
after. And I was like, is that what this is?
But it wasn't. It's actually a movie.
Go ahead and play the clip.
All right. Matub is in St. Joseph's right now as well.
He lives there. That's cool.
Who? Really? Got a guy on our chat. Yeah.
Yeah. All right. Here we go. Let's play it.
Humans for the most part
are inept creatures.
Tova, I'm not touching some random
kids gum. I'm not asking you to chew it.
Just get it off the floor.
From this side of the tank, I've seen
it all. I suppose you're
the person they hired to take over for me.
I really need this job.
Circular motion's not up and down.
Of all the humans, I suppose I mind the cleaning lady, the least.
There is a right way and a wrong way to do things.
She's insane.
It's all she has.
Hello, my lovelings.
She's been through a lot.
The way she lost her son.
Tover how to son?
It's not my story to tell.
Colmini doing full Colmini accent.
I loved it.
So much.
This is remarkably bright creatures.
You heard Sally Field, who I still love.
I love her so much.
She looks freaking great, by the way.
I love her.
She looks so good for her age.
I don't know how she does it.
She doesn't look like she's covered in work.
She just looks fantastic.
It was such an easy watch too.
It was like, I think I watched it on a Sunday morning.
I was like, oh, and then I'm crying.
I'm like, oh.
But I put it off for a watch.
because I just saw the octopus and I was thinking of that documentary.
Yeah.
My something teacher.
Something teacher.
My octopus teachers?
That what it was?
My octop.
Yeah, it was my octopus teacher.
Oh, I love that.
I was awesome.
I know there were, everybody loves it.
I tried to watch it and I got so bored with it that I just didn't finish it.
You heartless beast.
Oh, no.
Did you?
So you didn't even get to the point where you're like, oh no.
Is it going to be okay?
Yeah.
And it's funny because.
I've watched some segments on
on octopus
and people have theories that they're aliens
right and because they're so smart
and yeah it's
who's the who's the inner voice of the
it sounds like Alec Baldwin who is that
it's the guy from the burrows
I don't know his name
you would know his face
can't find it in the credits here
what do they call him
is he have a name
a character I mean
Marcellus?
I don't see it.
It's not the top credits.
Weird.
It sounded like, I don't know.
It sounded like a bald one to me, but what do I know?
It's Alfred Molina.
Oh, Alfred Molina.
Dude, he's freaking Doc Ock, man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We love him.
Hello, Peter.
Hey, Peter.
And he's like, you bring me the idol.
I throw you the whip.
It's that guy.
Oh, yeah.
That is that the guy.
Yeah.
Oh, man.
It's crazy how many things you realize people are in.
He's a fantastic actor.
I love the movie.
It's heartwarming.
There's a wonderful story to it.
And I mean, everything kind of falls in place for the movie.
And that's okay.
I don't feel like we get a lot of those anymore and just good heartfelt business.
Yeah.
It's, yeah.
And I like this Lewis Pullman a lot.
I like him more than his dad almost.
I think he is kicking A.
And it's not just because he's cool in the MCU.
I think he's got real raw talent.
He's really good.
And I just think anything that gets Coleman.
meanie involved. I sign up for, even though he's got a tiny role. It sounds like it's not a big
role, but it's, uh, you know, whatever. Chief O'Brien running the controls. I love him.
Could watch him eat a banana right now, right in front of me. Let's go. As I get into my older years,
I really love, uh, the representation for the older generation kind of coming back into
popular media. So like, I mentioned the burrows. I really,
really enjoyed that. I actually get to finish it now that we have Netflix back.
Are you still there? Yeah, we're here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. I never know when I drop you.
It's because there's been too many times. I'm gun shy because there's been too many times where I just
start talking and I'm like, oh, I'm talking. It's usually your car or something though, right? Yeah,
yeah, yeah. Yeah. Someone will call through or something. Even the, there was a like a crime one.
Was it the residence? That was another good one.
The boroughs are recommended a lot of that.
The residents was awesome.
Yeah, the residents was awesome.
The boroughs I recommended.
I think I called it, I don't remember what I called it,
entertainment, but it wasn't the burrows.
Sadly, that didn't get renewed.
No, it didn't.
So it's a one and done, unfortunately.
I think same for the residents.
I don't think that got renewed.
Oh, really?
No.
Too bad.
You know what did get renewed that I'm going to,
I've recommended it in the past.
I want to remind people because I just found out,
I don't know, I just was.
perusing Apple TV. Sugar. Season two of sugar is out.
Don't let Stephen Schlecker hear you talking about this.
Schleger hates it. He doesn't like, he didn't like sugar. He didn't like the reveal in the
first season. I know, I know. Oh, I love sugar. I did too. I love the aesthetic of it.
Yes, the noir. Yeah. Oh, it's wonderful. It's so good. And aside from like banshees of
to Sharon and in Bruges might be my favorite
Colin
Colin thing
Colin Farrell.
Farrell, thank you.
I had Meany still in my head
even though it's like Colin Wilde.
Colmine.
He's not.
He's ferald.
I can't have a role with him now.
I'll see whatever he does.
Yeah.
Yeah, I do love it.
Remember when you was just kind of a butthole like in the 90s?
Yeah.
Like a little cocky.
Right.
Getting in trouble all the time.
Now it's just like,
He has a special...
Well, and he has...
He has a special need son that he cares for.
Mm-hmm.
Do you know that?
I think that is a way of mellowing people out.
Yeah.
It really is.
Yeah.
And he's really sweet about it.
I've heard some interviews about it.
And he's just very...
You can tell he's committed in that regard.
He's a good dad.
Yeah.
And if I...
When Lagthromos or whatever his name is, makes another movie,
please get your old buddy Colin back in it.
I liked the lobster and all that weird shit you did together.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Bring him back.
I know you like Emma Stone.
I get it.
Was he in killing of a sacred deer, too?
Yes.
With Nicole Kidman?
Yes.
He was the dad, the doctor husband, yeah.
Yeah.
It's an amazing movie.
It's really good.
So yeah, Sugar Season 2 is out.
I'm all in for it.
I started watching it.
I got two episodes in so far.
And I was like, I asked Mateo,
you want to watch this show with me?
I'll go back to season one and watch it again with you.
Why not?
I'm trying to convince my son into watching stuff with me.
Well, in the meantime, catch Fish Lady and that dude on Netflix.
Sorry, remarkably bright creatures.
Yes, remarkably bright creatures.
I write it down here.
Fish Lady.
Well, I just, for whatever reason, I couldn't remember it this morning.
So I put it in the notes just quickly to remind myself and I wrote down Fish Lady and the dude.
All right.
let's get to mine. This is something that I saw on HBO Max, and it's a documentary that I think
I may have actually watched twice and forgotten that I did the first time, but it was worth it.
It was about 10 years ago, and it was worth seeing again because I also did a deep dive and a bit
of a follow-up. And here's the weird thing. I'm not going to play you anything from the actual
documentary, because instead I'm going to play you a clip from this kid named Sam, who did a TED Talk
while he was still with us, and just had some really easy.
smart stuff to say. So my clip is from that. Here it is. What is the most important thing that people
should know about you? My answer was simply that I have a very happy life. So even though there are
many obstacles in my life, with a lot of them being created by progeria, I don't want people
to feel bad for me. I don't think about these obstacles all the time and I'm able to
overcome most of them anyway. So I'm here today to share with you my philosophy.
for a happy life.
So for me, there are three aspects to this philosophy.
The first aspect to my philosophy is that I'm okay with what I ultimately can't do
because there's so much that I can do.
All right, that is Sam Burns,
and he is the central figure in the documentary life according to Sam.
He has progeria, which is this condition you guys have probably seen before in places
where it's very rare, but when a kid has,
has it. They only live about 14 years on average. Their body rapidly ages. They end up with heart
conditions, strokes, and heart attacks at age 14 because they have the circulatory system of like a 95-year-old
given because of this condition. And they also, you know, kind of look like it. They look like
they're old and, you know, it's strange because in some ways they are still young, still kids,
but they take on this appearance and it's really hard for them.
This movie is about this kid and his family
and how they decided to deal with it.
And because of their family or his family's mother and father in particular,
they figured out a way to get some real work done in the space of trying to deal with this disease,
helping find a cure, working toward better medications, that sort of thing.
And they kind of, whoa, that was loud.
I'm going to turn that down.
Sorry.
I'm going to mute you for a second.
Did you just get transferred to the back of a van?
Yeah, that was weird.
No, it's our air conditioner.
Oh.
Oh, okay.
The air conditioner really likes that room.
Wait twice if you're okay.
Yeah, let us know.
Anyway, so Sam,
he broke, well, he lived a little longer than average.
He only lived to 17, but he did finally pass away and was a result of this disease.
This documentary came out in 2013 or 14,
and it was like maybe a year before his passing.
And it deals with a few other kids in it, but it's mostly about Sam and his thing.
This is one of the most inspirational kids I've ever heard in my life in terms of what he says, how he lived his short life, how freaking smart he was.
Like if we could have figured out a way to extend his life to another 30 years, I have zero doubt he would have done just incredible things.
He's so freaking smart and so wise about how.
who he is and where he is and why he is.
It just is incredibly inspirational.
It's a little gut-wrenching to know that he's no longer with us because he was just so,
you know,
just so singularly interesting in this documentary and I just hate the idea.
He's not around.
And I feel so bad for his parents.
But man,
his parents are rock stars.
It is just a beautiful documentary about a beautiful human that should inspire even the most
cynical of us.
So if you have a moment,
check out 2013's Life,
according to Sam, which is on HBO.
It's an HBO documentary, so it'll always be there, should be,
unless Azlov takes it off because he's a dick.
I can't imagine him doing that, but it's a wonderful documentary that is not,
for once, I'm not talking about murders and unsolved cases.
Addiction.
Or addiction and all that, yeah.
Your latest addiction.
Exactly.
Although Wendy, Wendy thinks that this is in the same line.
And I asked her about that offline.
I said, really, she goes, yeah, you are very interested in the struggle
of people who have it hard for whatever their reason is.
So whether it's drug addiction and it's severe or it's something like this,
like a medical condition or whatever,
you're fascinated by that.
And I am and I don't know why,
but I get a lot out of it.
And this one I really did.
And I think now this is my second time.
I say I think because I'm not quite sure I saw it.
It just kept being familiar.
I was like watching, go, wait, have I seen this scene?
Where have I seen this?
Maybe I've just seen clips or something.
but is this is the one where he his whole community in wow no different kid different
different different that's also excellent that's on net that is a really good yeah that's called
something of something of oh what's that called someone in the chat will know it also very much
worth watching different condition but same thing you know young people who are afflicted with
horrible terminal diseases that they just have no control over and he's inspiring because the
Sam kid just, it didn't matter.
Like he could be in pain and he was a lot.
And he was dealing with all these like getting poked and prodded constantly and trying to do all these things.
But he just, he's like, I'm going to play drums in band.
I don't care what it takes.
And band comes around and they deny him.
And he's like, well, then I'm going to figure out a way to get in there.
So he makes his own drum kit so that it's lighter so that his small frame can move the way he needs to be to keep up with the rest of the band.
And then they let him on the team.
And his high school loved him.
He got four student awards at his graduation.
And they were like all academic, like high level academic stuff.
Just this brilliant kid who loved his parents.
His parents loved him.
And it was just a, it's a really sweet story about persevering in the worst situations.
And it's only made harder just because he passed away.
But 17 was like way past when everyone expected him to live.
No one lives past 14, 15.
The oldest on record with this condition was 18 years old, and it was like 50 years ago or something.
So anyway, really, really good stuff.
Check it out.
You'll be glad you did.
That is called the Life, or Life According to Sam, and it's available on HBO.
So we got one HBO, one Netflix and one Apple TV.
Yeah.
You got a, it's a straight.
It's a straight.
There's no flush until we get there.
Nicole, is there anything happening in the wood world?
we should know about it? Yes. We brought our charity back and I'm running a charity to support
an organization called the Purple Heart Foundation. It's for wounded vets that are looking for
therapeutic ways through woodworking to kind of recover from PTSD. So I'm running a charity auction,
Mark and I are running a charity auction. We're going to have a live event on October 2nd on our
YouTube channel.
Nice.
And I'm running an auction full of tons of tools from companies that we work with.
So if you go to thewoodwhisperer.com slash WFC, you'll learn all about it and the history of
it and what we're doing on this go-around.
Nice.
That's what I'm doing right now is all I'm doing.
Your husband did a video recently.
It was a short that I was obsessed with.
I had watched it three or four times over because one of his table saws or something fell
over? I forgot what the tool was. It didn't fall over. He pushed it over. Oh, that explains why I was
confused. And I watched it over and over and over. So that table saw was his original table saw
when we first started the wood was coming up on 20 years. And we auctioned that table saw off 10 years
ago for this particular charity, WFC. Originally, we were supporting cancer charities, but we've experienced.
banded it beyond so we could do things like the Purple Heart Project and other things that we
want to do in the future. But the person that got the table saw sent it back to him because
they had gotten out of woodworking and it was like it just feels like it needs to come back
to you. So that's him getting the saw back after 10 years and he's working to kind of get it
functional. That's great. I love hearing that. Yeah. What a sweet thing. Well, that's awesome. Get out there
and support it. Gives the URL one more time.
the woodwhisper.com slash WFC.
WFC.
Some of you wrestling fans may screw that up.
Try not to.
Woodworkers for a cause.
There you go.
Yeah.
That's awesome.
So cool.
Nicole, stay out of trouble and
we'll do.
Pet Dougie.
Dougie's all right, right?
Everything's okay with Dougie?
Where's Dougie?
Uh-oh.
Did I ask a terrible question?
What happened?
Dougie died.
No!
When did this happen?
Like a month or so ago?
I miss this entirely.
Yeah.
Oh, I'm sorry.
He had, he got cancer.
I mean, he was, okay, the lifespan of a bulldog is about eight years.
Yeah, pretty low.
He was almost 10.
That's pretty good.
And it kind of happened pretty quickly.
Actually, it was probably July when we had to make the call because it progressed really fast.
Oh, man.
So, yeah, everybody in the chat's like, so all the crying today.
Yeah, let's have all the sad, all the sad revelations.
Yeah, so yeah, we've had a lot of time to process it.
And I'm going to just say, Dougie was his own dog.
And he, I will never have another bulldog.
Dougie will always be my only bulldog because if it just, he was one of the kind.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, every time the kids here, the little's when they come over,
they're obsessed with a show called Dougie or hey, Dougie.
Hey, Dougie.
Yeah, and we love it too.
Was that where he got his name from?
Was it from that show?
Yes.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Yes.
Oh, yeah.
Makes me like it even more.
All of our, so when the kids came about and they were kind of obsessed with certain cartoons, we would name our animals after the cartoon characters.
So, T. Mumy Zumi, are you familiar with that one?
Yeah.
So Millie, that's how Millie, are Dobermen, who passed away a few years ago.
actually a number of years ago.
That's how she got her name.
And then Dougie was Hey, Dougie.
Oh, that's great.
Hey, Dougie's awesome.
I love that show.
Yeah, it is.
It's a fun show.
I love that you're experiencing all of these shows that I, I mean, I could talk to your
ears off.
Oh, yeah, no.
All the kid shows.
Yeah, the kid that's all back in form here.
Whenever they're at the house, that's what's on.
So I'm loving it.
Oh, yeah.
Well, Nicole, have a great month.
And don't lose any more animals between now and next time we talk to you.
Okay.
No.
All right.
Click.
Click.
Let that stick with you for a while.
All right.
We're going to get out of here.
A quick email from a listener.
This is about the jugs of pee.
This is from Ron, the artist in Pennsylvania.
There's only one.
One artist in Pennsylvania.
The artist formerly known as Ron from Pennsylvania.
That's right.
Deer Scrotum and bladder.
I don't know which is worse.
Yeah.
You know, I was going to say, you know, at least bladder's on the inside.
I don't know.
Another one is preferable.
I'm a bag of nuts.
I don't like it.
It says,
while watching Return of the King the other day,
I had a random thought.
If the orcs,
I don't know,
say it right,
and the rest of their ilk
killed all men in Middle Earth.
I feel like Ron,
the artist has been on the weed.
But anyway,
what would they all do all day?
Would they have to go get hobbies,
singing groups,
play checkers?
Would they form gangs
and fight in the streets
like the sharks
and the jets and Westside story?
so many questions. Love the show though. Ron. Ron, first of all, that edible hit, so you're good.
They're taking the hobbies to Eisengar. They're taking the hobbies to Eisenhower.
It is a good point, though. Like when you raise up that army, you only raise them up to fight, I would think.
Yeah, yeah. What is the other use for them? And when you play games like the two, those two Lord of the Rings games that were so good, I forgot the names, Shadow of Mordor and the other one, they just stood around a lot and waited for you to kill them.
like there's not it's just a lot of fodder i think in in mortar so it's all in the by it's a numbers game
for yeah for the evil side of middle earth so i think i think that's the answer is they're just
standing around waiting for blood that's it nobody's singing with anybody no one's playing checkers
they might chop each other's limbs off or something but anyway there you go thanks ron
appreciate the email it's good good thinking there yeah yeah keep your text and emails coming
frogpants dot com slash tms for everything you need if you're looking at
for new shows. Well, good news. There's a bunch of stuff on the schedule. So check that out at
frogpants.com slash schedule. We got any dispatch today or what's what you're playing?
I finished. I finished dispatch on Saturday and at least my first run through of it. I'm curious.
TV's Travis went to Dragon Consodid Amy. Did you guys see anybody cosplaying as the giant cat
mascot thing from dispatch? That's the that's the cosplay that I would want to see. Like the giant
cathead mascot with the coffee cup with whiskey in it.
I saw a couple of the big trash guy.
There's some pictures of the big trash guy who's played by that rapper guy.
Yeah, Golm.
And then who else?
I saw the devil lady.
No, malevala.
Malabala Gib.
She's my favorite.
If I had the choice between blonde blazer, Invisigal and malevala Gibb, I would choose
malevala Gibb.
There's a few of those I saw in pictures from Dragon Combat.
Who knows about that cat?
And Redfragut says if I did, I didn't recognize it.
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh, that's a good point.
Yeah, you have to know who.
Let's see if I can find it.
Dispatch giant cat mascot is probably the best way to look for it.
Got a lot of...
I guess he's Mr. Whiskey is his name.
Yeah.
All right.
Here, I'm going to give you the image.
In our Discord chat, you can put it up in TV's Travis and, uh, oh, yeah, there you go.
Yeah, with the, the eyes going opposite directions is like a, here we go.
It feels like if you're going to cosplay, oh, yeah, forgot about that cat.
Yeah.
So did you, I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm going to ask you if you got the ending
with the conversation on the car or did you get a different one?
Yes, I did get the, I did get an ending with the conversation on the car.
Okay.
but a potential love interest ran away.
I think I had the same ending as you.
Yeah.
That's where I went.
It would surprise me because I'm going to guess.
I'll bet we have a very similar set of choices in the game.
I wonder if there's a way to pull up your choices.
Oh, there is actually.
You can go in the options.
There's an option to see where you picked and then what...
I don't.
I can see mine.
And you can see what most other people picked.
So you can see like...
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I'd like to see just your specific.
Oh, yeah, I could go, I could log in, I guess, and see.
But basically, I, let's just say I started out thinking one thing about a certain character,
and by the end, I had been turned, which I wasn't sure what it said about me as a person, but I kind of fell for it.
Sure.
No, I certainly did.
I pulled her in, if you know what I mean.
I know exactly what you mean.
You know which chapter I'm talking about.
No, so yesterday I started Platform 8, the sequel to Exitate, and, you know, and, you know,
And that game gives you less to go on than Exitate.
Exitate, I felt like you got all the information you needed from the first sign that you see on the wall.
Platform 8, you really have to figure stuff out.
And it's a lot of trial and error more than it's, oh, that looks different.
I'm going back the other way.
In Platform 8, you can't go backwards.
You can only go forwards.
I didn't know that.
And so you have to do weird things depending on what's going on in your train car.
There were a bunch of requests back then.
When it was rumored, they were working on a second game.
They were requests that it would be more difficult.
So it sounds like that's what that is.
They succeeded because there are still certain cars.
There's still certain things that happen.
I have zero idea how to pass.
And I had a chat room chatting with me telling me, you know, try this.
What about this?
And none of those things were working.
So I'm going to do some more today.
I saw a lot of, I saw a lot of scary shit.
That's what I saw.
I bet.
Yeah, there's some, like, that one thing in Exit 8,
where you get the guy that comes out of the wall as the tiles and starts running at you.
I hated that.
Imagine a freaking bunch of that kind of, that level of stuff.
Yeah, Twitchy guy.
Anyway, I uploaded my video, my streaming videos online.
You can hear the points where I go, no, I'm getting out of here.
I don't want that.
Nope, nope, nope, nope.
Nobody wants a wall guy chasing you.
Exactly.
So Platform 8 on YouTube Coverville, and I'll play some more today.
Nice.
Have you guys seen this shot of Tanner hanging out with BB No Money?
Yes.
Dirty bastard.
Yeah, he was apparently really nice, and he sat and talked to him for a long time,
and the guy's a huge wow nerd.
That's so cool.
Yeah, it was kind of cool to hear about that.
He was just hanging around the Hilton, and they were all just chatting and talking.
It's pretty cool.
Nice, nice.
And Tanner went to Disneyland.
and he said, hey, Brian, do you need any, any, uh, khyber crystals?
And I'm like, oh, crap, there are some new ones now, some new chase ones.
So I said, yeah, pick me up, pick me up three blue ones because there's a chance for a
Kylo Ren, which is a blue crystal with red in the middle, like a red core.
And, uh, and Tanner texts me and said, well, I got three for you.
And then I got one for myself.
I opened up the one for myself and it was the Kylo Ren.
So he said, so I'm sending that to you.
I'm like, dude, you don't have to do that.
He's doing it anyway.
That's the kind of nice guy Tanner is.
That is that guy.
He is a very nice guy.
Yes.
Wicky kitten, you should be glad you're not a BlizzCon
because it ended yesterday.
You'd be going home today.
You'd be there alone.
Yeah.
Just helping clean up is probably what you'd be doing.
Nobody wants to do that.
Have you seen the Hilton bathroom on Sunday?
So bad.
Tell me a quick question as Mr. Instance.
Warcraft Forever.
So I'm going to pick up the upgrade for Refor.
I've already got Warcraft 3 reforged, but there's the new campaign that I'm super excited about.
Yeah, and you get a better deal that way if you buy it as a bundle.
Yeah, that's what I was going to ask you, because I saw that forever comes as a bundle with Reforged.
I didn't realize, I thought it was a similar thing.
Like you pay the subscription and you get the game for free for, uh, WorkRuff.
Well, it's never like that because Warcraft, you always have to pay for the game.
You always have to pay for the game.
So even if you're playing retail.
Oh, that's true.
Even the, yeah, that's true.
Right.
Now they have, I mean, obviously all these years later, you can get started up to a point to get going.
But the minute you want new content, you have to, you got to buy an expansion.
That's what I'm thinking.
Okay.
So anyway, I'm going to pick up the Warcraft Forever Collection since it's got reforged.
I want the collector's one because it looks rad and I want that bear and dwarf thing.
But they sold out in like five seconds.
Did they really? Oh, wow.
Yeah. I don't know if they're going to refill that or not, but probably not.
Wow.
So those are going to be rare and hard to get.
Yeah. Great. Good luck with that.
Yeah, it's all pretty exciting.
That wow for everything is pretty exciting what they're doing.
Yeah.
It sounds on paper like they are giving me exactly what I need as a hybrid of classic versus modern.
Give me a little bit of what's good about both, you know, put it together.
And then one realm is crazy, though.
because it's not, you don't, you're not getting on a server with your friends.
It is one server the entire game.
That's right.
Yeah, all one realm.
And it's all like, so it's a mix of the RP, PVP, but you just change that as an aspect when you log into the game if you want PVP.
Well, depending on what of those things they even include.
Gotcha.
I don't even know what of those systems will make it over or not.
But my guess is it'll be closer to vanilla rules, which was,
you attack somebody else, you're now flagged for PVP and you, and now you're, you're susceptible.
Gotcha.
They won't do the war mode thing or any of that stuff they do today.
So it'll, it'll be different in those regards, but one giant server to serve them all.
It's going to be, uh, other games do this. Other games do this. Like ESO does this,
freaking, um, let's see, uh, Eve Online is one giant server. So there's plenty of examples of where they do this, but they're, they're, the way they're segmented out, it makes a little bit.
bit more sense. I think it's going to be a little nuts how many people will congregate in the
main towns and stuff with it being one server. I don't know how they're going to do it.
That could get that could get crazy. We'll see. They'll probably probably have phased.
They'll phase it. I don't know. They'll do stuff. But if you want your good, like Tanner is worried
about getting our guild name as quick as we can because now you're on one server. Everybody has to
bum rush. Because we're going to do core, but core is so common of a word and short that we're
afraid it's just going to get snapped up by somebody so we don't know you're not going to not going to try
and get i eat babies huh all right no they freaking bastards took that away from us never forget but you know
who hasn't you know hasn't forgotten Veronica belmont down there she hasn't forgotten where'd she go
well she's not in camera anymore but Veronica will never forget that was her idea anyway
that's going to do it for today's show thanks everybody for being here we're going to play a song as we
leave yes hey Brian what song are we playing we're going to play something going to
one out to Josh 3.0. Getting to this one a little bit late, catching up because we had a ton
of stuff for the end of August and not much stuff for the beginning of September. So, cool.
You know, getting a few extra things here.
Josh said, hey, Sheik and Beetle, it's Josh 3.0. Oh, man, I always forget to do this. So if you
can't get it in that in time, that's fine. But August 26th is Raven's birthday. So I figured I
would try to sneak one at the last minute. As you guys know, Raven is amazing. And I'm so
happy we get to spend of this crazy life together.
Anyway, we're going to see Toto,
Christopher Cross, and the Romantics for
her birthday, so I thought what better than to
ask for Leo Moricholi's metal cover
of Africa. And so that's what we're
playing for you. Here's Africa by
heavy metal Leo, Leo Morachioli.
Weing tonight, but she
airs only whispers of some quiet
conversation.
Coming in 12.35,
Wings reflect the stars that guide me towards how they
Stop the old man along the wind fight some old forgotten words
All ancient men Turn to me asses to say
Hurry boy is waiting there for you
All rises like Olympus above the sand
Dogpants, dogpant's dogcom
Can he have a pistol?
He could have
No, he could have
