Starting point is 00:00:05 I'm David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker magazine, and I'm here to talk radio. This is the New Yorker Radio Hour. What is it exactly? Well, first thing, it's an experiment. Each week, we're going to bring you stories and profiles and humor, all of it inspired somehow by the New Yorker magazine. How does this work as a national story? And at the center of things will be the writers and artists and editors
Starting point is 00:00:27 who work here at our offices at One World Trade Center. This won't be an audio version of the magazine or the website. It'll be its own thing. radio. Sure. Each week we'll have in-depth conversations. Do you like dogs or cats better? We'll explore ideas that are central to our lives now. I mean, I was the dream of Malcolm X, that we could separate
Starting point is 00:00:45 ourselves, that we could divorce ourselves from what this was. Do you want that? I want that. We'll hear stories about the human condition. One of the first things Nina told me was that Bob Dylan really loved your father. We'll take you into the city.
Starting point is 00:01:03 How much money have you found this year on the streets of New York? My total is 30, Across the United States and the world. Are you still in Cuba? Yeah, I'm in Santiago. I've listened to radio all my life, and there was a good reason for that. I was a childhood insomnia. It was a classic confrontation.
Starting point is 00:01:22 I listened to all kinds of radio to the wildness of Bob Fasso's show on WBAI. You brought electricity with you? Yes, I did. To the endless conversations of Long John Nebel on WMCA. And, of course, music all night long. For me and like so many other people, radio brought me to other worlds. And that's what we'll try to do for you. So join me for the first episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour.
