Episode 0125 opens with a full Trash Battalion staff meeting (awards board voting, BLUF violations, 0530 trash bag training, and a surprisingly moving word from Chaps) before the guys get into the real intel: where's the line on American flag apparel? Crocs? Socks? Underwear? Tres draws his line and it involves not trusting his own farts. Then Grant reports from Newport, Rhode Island on the greatest chow value in New England — the Two Bug Lunch — two whole lobsters, corn, and coleslaw for $40. Jeff finally stops gatekeeping Patagonia's tinned fish (a canned fish company that makes clothes), and Grant explains whether genetics actually matter for getting strong.Plus: Week Zero college football (USC's crowd of dozens), Week 1 speed picks, the guys make their official picks on the baby's arrival date, time, and weight, and the episode closes with the definitive air power vs. sea power doctrine book-off. It's only a lot of reading if you do it.Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro04:38 - Staff Brief23:41 - Chaps Calls In28:46 - Tres' Lifting Update28:53 - Wearing The Flag Debate34:34 - America 250th Plate Update36:32 - Two Bug Lunch41:00 - Tinned Fish47:02 - Role of Genetics In Lifting01:07:03 - Week Zero Recap01:13:50 - Due Date Predictions01:17:47 - Week One Picks01:23:07 - NIL Chaos01:25:45 - Hung Ordinance

I'd be light.
I've always said that.
I thought of a new bit that we can do.
Ooh, I love it.
We pick an underground band and see if Grant would like it or not.
I'm down.
All right, welcome back to episode 0125 of the OK podcast, powered by the strength.
Strength Co. I'm your host, Grant Broji. We're powered by the Strength Co. I'm joined live in studio
via the internet, via the cyber domain. If you guys don't know, but warfare happens across all
domains. Get out of your domain, get into a new domain. Cyber domain is real. Don't think
Elon Musk. Think cyber warfare, okay? But we're joining you here to record this really exciting
episode. It's all that's been on our minds all week. It's the one thing we've been talking about
was this week's episode. So we're excited. I'm joining us from Odessa, Texas.
Odessa. Oh, Dessa. Wow. Would anybody go to Odessa? Is Robert Trey Gowlige the third.
Some people call him a pound cake smasher. We'll get to that later in detail. A big pound cake
guy loves pound cakes he just likes to pound them pound them pound in the name why they call
father a three pound cake tray one time he ate three trace pound cakes in one sitting yeah uh joey chestnut
couldn't believe it um but he's on the show uh also on the show currently in a not in a drilling
status uh but technically on additional days of support and getting paid yeah and getting paid yes
So we got to keep comments to a minimum in terms of off-color comments.
From the greater Salt Lake City area, if you were to put a pin in Salt Lake City and then take a protractor and put it on greater area mode and draw a circle, you'd find yourself a Montgomery, Alabama, Air College.
Some people are big airpower people.
Personally, I'm more of a C-power guy.
I'm a big C-power guy, Jeff's an Air Power guy.
but that's where the combined arms just come together and we put people on the horns of a moral
dilemma which we've always wanted to do i'm currently on the horns of a moral dilemma our due date
is today if you're watching this on youtube you're not an idiot because you're watching on youtube
and you see me sprint out it's because i'm going to have a home berth in the bathtub and uh the time has
come for new life the price of bitcoin is 77 000 400 today's date is one september in the year of our
Lord, 27. As New Englander, big New England guy, don't let anyone take summer away from you and
one September comes. Now, I'm also homeschooled. I don't really know how the seasons work, but apparently
there's like a last day of summer. I generally go by the weather. And if you remember in the south,
it's not the heat, it's the humidity. So you're just kind of in the summer all year long.
But in New England, the weather starts to change. And you might think summer's over. Summer's not
over until flows clam shack closes in Middletown, Rhode Island. Okay, they close on Columbus Day
for the winter. And when you can't go get fried clams flows, that's when you know summer's over.
I've always said that. I'll never not say it and I'll never stop saying it. Episode 0125,
Trey changed his shirt. If you're not on YouTube, you missed a great only fan shot from Trey.
You can run it back. We're live on X right now. I really got to find my Toledo hat because all
runs, all roads run through Toledo.
I don't know where my hat is, but this podcast is brought to you by BW Tax.
BW. Tax, great guy better at taxes.
This podcast is also brought to you by Mr. Helmet, Green, Gridiron, Gridiron, green.
There's only one way to win a football game, and that's the Bill Belichickie way of a false start
to seal a win in Ireland.
But if you want to get a helmet, you get this cool Marine one with a visor on it that says
Semperfy and Ura
probably says like these Marines have no gumption or something
cool like that. You could do it.
I don't like Marines with no gumption.
Anyway, lots to talk about. The slide deck was over.
I mean, it was, we had to get a new teams account.
We had to go into our civilian brothers from the State Department
to get a bigger teams account to uphold the slide deck.
There's so much to talk about.
I'm worried that we're going to run out of time.
I find it funny, like the week that you have to potentially run out of here at any moment,
we actually fill the slide deck up.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thanks, guys.
Appreciate it.
Thanks for all you.
Hey, trash six.
I just want to say, one of brothers in need, that's when you bleed.
I've always said that.
And when trash on the floor.
Make it no more.
Yeah, make it no more.
I was going to say you know you're a whore.
But, yeah, anyway.
That's, you know, this new woke,
this new woke military they got us in, you know,
we had to change that.
We got to make more college is great again.
We're old, we're old course.
I remember when it used to be, we used to be tough.
Yeah, new core, old core, my core,
your core, United States Marine Corps.
Hey, with that, thanks to everybody for tuning in.
And 125 years of just trash dominance, years or episodes in the trash world.
I remember we live in a trash domain and hadn't spoken to the group in a while,
but it's good to have everybody here.
We hear there's new life coming soon, which is great because new life generates more trash.
And that's what keeps us in business.
Remember, at the end of the day, we are a trash institution.
Without it, we wouldn't exist.
All right.
Okay.
And before I give it to you the three, I'm looking at the deuce over there.
Where are you from, son?
Yes, sir.
Hey, just got off leave.
I was in Toledo, enjoying my time out there.
Toledo, a great time of year to be in Toledo.
How's the weather in Toledo?
Can't beat it.
It's obviously, you know, there's ever a bad time to be in Toledo.
It's what I always saying.
Yeah.
I've always kind of thought all roads ran through there.
It's been kind of my mind.
Was your dad a devil dog?
No, sir.
He was a Toledo mudhand.
Oh, that's probably where I knew him from.
I knew you looked familiar.
Hey, anyway, good to see you.
Thanks for all you do for the team.
I'm going to give it over to the three.
But if you would come by my office,
I got a meritorious mass for everyone that was born in Toledo to give to your mother.
So you just come by and I'll give it to you.
and you give it to her.
And, yeah, we love a good Midwestern family.
You know, we're all roads run through.
Oh, H. Yep.
Yeah.
I.O.
Yeah.
See what you did there.
See what you did there, Lance Corporal.
Yeah, you come by, get you that meritorious mass.
Oh, yes, right.
Might get your grandma, let her appreciate you.
Sar major, make sure that we hook up this Toledo kid.
You know how much I love the hometown boys.
I'll go home, take care that boy.
Yeah, I appreciate it, Sar, Major.
Three, it's your show.
Hey, thank you, thank you, sir.
Great, great stuff.
Yeah, dudes, you're probably familiar with maps.
And if you were looking at the map, even if you turn it around, even if we turn around the map, all roads still, still run through Toledo, right?
You call that a center of gravity, you know, that's Toledo right there.
Okay, hey, great stuff.
looks like about 50% of the people updated their slides.
Everyone else sent me a team's message that said they would brief to changes.
That's fine.
But sure, we got to get those slides updated.
We do this literally every single week.
This isn't a new thing.
But yeah, let's take it over to the One Shop.
How are we doing on the numbers?
Hey, good afternoon.
Good afternoon staff, Lieutenant Pinelli here.
I got failed out of A&S, so I'm back.
I went to Flo's clam shack today, had some fried clams really good.
I stopped by some Major's house asking for a lobster bacon, free leave.
He didn't give me any.
But the numbers are bumping.
They're bumping.
I'm not sure what that means, but I think it's like when Mickey Gasper just has the highest
OPS of a major league baseball player in 22 years.
But anyway, I digress.
Awards.
If you got a problem with awards, take it to my gunnery sergeant.
and get him fixed right up for you any awards.
We got a board commanders, if you could go in there and click the button.
Sorry, Sir, Trash 5.
I don't think that reading them should be required.
Just if you see the Marines name and you like them, just yes and no subject
and we'll get those awards pushed up.
One quick question from Trash 3 here.
When you put these members on the board for the awards voted,
Do you just tell, do you keep it a secret?
Or do you tell them so they can take action?
Or I'm guessing you just tell no one.
It's actually.
And you just let it sit for weeks and weeks and weeks.
Yes, yeah, it's a secret.
I wait until all the due dates have elapsed.
And then I brief it to the boss like I'm doing right now.
It seems to get a lot of people fired up about the awards.
It's the last guy told me to do it that way too.
And my gunnery Sadge has been on leave for ever since he went to Sajja
your Majes house, honestly. So I don't really have a lot of guidance over here.
But anyway, nothing further for the group. Gentlemen, go socks.
Hey, good, good stuff there, young lieutenant. Glad the numbers you're bumping.
Okay, S2. You know, let's get bottom line up front. The bluff, as we like to say.
I really like what people put the bluff at the bottom of an email.
Just tells me they don't know what bluff stands for. They just put it in that.
Trash 5. I would say, though, if they're opening with like some notes that they've had from a recent IPA,
I'm kind of okay in that scenario, major.
Oh, major, yeah. Spot on. A, hey, you young company grades, okay, that's spot on. That's good to go.
guidance from a season field grade or an iron major, as we'd like to say, an iron major.
He's in the trenches every day.
Hey, brother, I feel like I've been locked up in a broom closet.
the phone.
I bet.
It's fit rep season, brother.
And you're just,
you're just like all those RO worksheets you're getting and you're,
you know,
you're,
you're,
you're,
you're,
you see in those fit reps before they go up to the boss.
Yeah.
It's a hard,
that's a hard day's work right there.
I need IPA after all those.
For all you post EWS senior captains,
man,
once you become major,
they just put you,
they put you in with the mops in the broom closet and,
uh,
get ready for power points and,
um,
thoughts on C power.
Anyway,
sorry, brother.
You're so,
brother.
comments always welcome always welcome okay all right without further ado uh deuce deuce you know
you know what we want to hear uh yes sir this is uh lance corporal uh from ohio uh who was mentioned
the uh lieutenant did we did we already talk yes sir we briefly uh are you are you the one from
Toledo i am sir yep hey sir major make sure you get him a meritorious mask can't remember if i brought
that up
Gumble.
Hey, that's good, Sarremajor.
I'll take some of that.
The lieutenant is out.
I think he said he's going over to
Sergeant Major's house, so he has to
cover it down for him.
He said he has some leave.
He needs to get.
So, but
Bluff, I don't know what that stands for.
I've not been to
any sort of fancy colleges.
But he, if I just
talk about the straight-of-hor moves,
should that be,
Would that suffice?
Okay.
Gentlemen, the straight-door hor moves is closed.
As trash five.
Yes, sir.
Bottom line up front.
So you actually could have opened.
You could have opened with the straight-of-hormoos is closed
and then gone into all that, whatever you're saying.
Yes, sir.
I thought, you know, I thought the commander,
he always wants to know whenever we're on duty
if someone from Ohio checks in that we have to report it to him.
Yeah, no, that's true.
But it's kind of a message to Gar-
see a thing. We still want the bluff
idea for you. Get with some of your
flat black senior enlisted, re-leading Marines, and
try again next week. Yes,
sir. Yeah.
Okay. You know what?
We're all learning. It's one
team, one fight. We're getting better
each week. Okay. We're hopefully updating
our slides next week.
But okay, yeah, so the
three portion here.
On the schedule, you may have seen
next week we got the mobile
training team stopping into the battalion, right?
We're going to get spun up on the new issued trash bags or...
Is that different than the non-mobile training team?
Yes, yeah, yeah.
There's the static training team where you go to them and then the mobile training team,
they come to you.
They're mobile.
They are mobile.
I've never seen the static training team of you.
No one has.
Okay, okay.
Just want to make sure, brother, thanks.
It's per doctrine.
You know, I'm a big, big doctrine guy.
I'm in our doctrine.
I'm in the joint doctrine.
You know, I'm getting, I'm getting immersed in the Air Force doctrine.
Speak of my language, brother.
And the static, oh, don't get me started on air power, brother.
Air power.
Sea power. Wars have fought on land.
Right.
The bomber always gets through is what I've been told.
But yeah, so we got the mobile training team.
Okay, they're going to be highly mobile.
And they're going to be spinning us up on the new trash bags that we're getting issued.
Right.
These are going to be more lightweight, compact.
and expeditionary.
So we're going to, it's going to be good training.
Make sure you send your trash bag operators, okay, our 05-05-3-2s,
down to the S3 shop.
They'll link up with our training chief.
Training chief will get them out to the parade deck.
We'll have the Marines out there for anywhere from 10 to 12 hours for about 20 minutes
of probably actual training, but it's going to be good training.
So make sure they're there.
0.530, staged, ready to go.
Note taking gear.
The training will kick off in 08.
This is a Gulles, Major.
Is it necessary that we start at 0.5.30 in the morning?
Because I got that prayer meeting.
I mean, sorry, Major, if you want to attend the trash bag meeting.
I just mean them devil dogs that might want to wake up and worship their Lord and Savior.
Do they really need to be there at zero?
Well, I think we'll also have the mobile worship team.
out there also and they'll be on deck and they will be
co-located with the mobile training team.
We're going to a full mobile model here at the Trash Battalion.
Because we need to be able to go to the trash, right?
The trash isn't going to come to us.
We got to go to the trash.
Could you make me up with that worship team?
I'd like to sing Gala Gala Island.
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
We'll get you CC'd on that two line and BCC'd on all the, on the previous traffic
and then get you added in.
There's a whole, there's a teams channel.
set up for the mobile worship team
and then mobile training team.
Gulles, you know what they mean
when they say teams?
I'm funny if you're talking
to the
page of Sajamazer major, is that what you're referring to?
Oh, yeah, sorry, I was thinking, I was
talking to yourself.
A little identity
crisis there, boy.
No, somebody. I'll be
honest with you, I was not listening to that conversation.
I was thinking about my gumbo.
in a slow cooking, you know, a big old pot.
But it sounds great.
Excited to see how it turns out.
I will not be there at 5.30.
Zero, five 30 for you military types.
Oh, no.
None of the officers will be there.
It'll just, we'll just have the Lance corporals
and then probably like two corporals that maybe got NJPed
and busted down from sergeant.
Yeah, that's who it will be out there at 530.
No, no leadership will be out there.
We'll probably roll in at 9 or something like that.
we want really.
We parts that decentralized leadership.
Yeah, exactly.
Exactly.
We're empowering the young devil dogs.
Yes, sir.
Oh, we got a hand up?
Yes, sir.
Random Corporal 3 shop.
You've never really ever recognized me as a person.
How can we always have to get up so much earlier than everyone else and do all the work?
I know we're supposed to be the backbone, but it seems like maybe a...
So this is the...
This is a...
Do you mind if I take this one?
Oh, sorry, Major, please.
I want to see the master at work here.
Yeah, what's your name, Corporal?
My name is Corbel Smith.
I'm from Toledo, Ohio.
Do me in favor and hush.
Go ahead, hush, okay.
Just be there.
We'll see you later.
Okay.
Go ahead, sir.
Do you want me to respond, Sarmager, or just hush?
No, I will, I'll let you know when you can respond, yeah.
No, you'll get it.
Okay, I don't plan on re-enlisting.
I'm going to go back to Toledo.
That's fine. I don't want you.
Go ahead and leave.
Okay, bye-bye.
Go, tigers.
Yes, go tigers.
Go tigers indeed.
Okay, and that's all the three shops, Scott.
We're going to kick it over to the S-4.
They're going to talk coordinating instructions, I think,
and maybe our supply rep might be here for issuing out the new trash bags.
And we'll give a quick rundown.
I think maybe on how that's going to go.
Or maybe that's will be the trash bag issue working group that I see on the schedule for after this.
But the floor is yours for.
Yeah, thank you.
This is the four.
No, SEPO's not here.
He's currently just counting all the trash bags.
Smart.
Yeah, someone to make sure we have all the trash bag.
Your accountability.
That's good.
I appreciate that.
Yeah, yeah.
Weapons trash shelf.
That's what we always say here.
It's actually trash weapon.
But I understand.
No, no, it's my mistake.
Bingo.
Bango.
The only thing I need to report,
Sarm Major still currently has all the dumpsters checked out.
I called Patow.
in, talk to the chief warrant officer up there.
You know, just giving me his unsolicited advice, very helpful.
But he signed out three dumpsters to me.
So we have three extra that should be over this week.
Outside of that, they look to be in pretty good condition.
Be ready to go.
Hey, it's not what you know.
It's who you know, am I right, for?
That's it, yes, sir.
That's a senior, that's a senior captain right there.
Yeah, all roads.
Look at that.
Yes, sir.
Yeah.
Okay, great brief.
great brief for you. I appreciate you hunting that
like really putting rubber to the road
working your connections, right? You work in that company
great connection, you know, with the
warrant officers, with those mysterious warrant officers.
We don't really know what they do, but
they're there and they know where all the bodies are buried
if I'm right, you know what I'm saying? Yes, sir,
that's correct. It would be great if we could
get those downstairs back from Sard Major at some
point.
Yeah, sir, for you talking about that.
Get with me off line.
have a sidebar.
Come by my office.
We'll actually do a desk side.
And I want to talk to all the company grades after this, too,
about the importance of resident PME.
Because relationships aren't everything.
Relationships are everything.
And so, you know, I want to talk about across the forces,
across the nations, really, across the domain.
So bring me all the company grades and for you.
You come by.
We'll work on that dumpster issue you got.
But thanks for all you do for the team.
Yes, sir.
Actually, I got to go.
Trash sticks out.
Oh.
Oh.
Tintra on deck on deck on deck.
All right.
Now we're going to get down to brass tacks out of the boss here.
We can just see if we need to make some sausage in this brief, like we can, we can make some sausage, right?
Hell yeah, brother.
Let's take it over to medical or dental or Japs.
We got any of our Navy brethren here with us in the room.
or online outstation.
Yeah, this is
Chief Petty Officer 9.
I work in dental.
I was actually supposed to be a seal.
Didn't work out.
Some in the dental shop.
I've been erroneously promoted seven times.
I just wanted to say,
get your dental exams.
Nothing further for the group.
Great brief.
Great brief.
I've decided to read your book in the future about almost being the Navy SEAL.
Oh, was that a joke, sir?
Yeah, yeah, that was, yeah.
Oh, okay.
I thought we were like a blue-green team.
I didn't realize that it was Marine Corps versus Navy.
Nothing to say that, yep.
Nothing further for the group.
Hey, quick sidebar.
with the force or the ops chief.
Maybe next time we don't send,
make sure that he's not on the invite list next time for the,
this, he's kind of real buzzkill.
Hey, trash five, keep all sidebars to the memo.
Yeah, that was just one.
Just had to talk to my, my chief here, you know,
Massard, you know, had to make sure.
Just text them, but no phones.
No phones.
No phones.
And only signal communication.
If you're texting official trash business,
I don't, I don't even want to hear.
about it because we will
come after you at the full extent of the
UCFJ. Okay, signal only.
Signal only. Is it Mass? Arm, top?
Yeah, MassArn Top. Yeah, he's in the gal.
Yeah, look him up.
Look him up in the gal. Go ahead.
Also look up first R and 89999.
Go find me the wizard.
The wizard.
What? Just find them.
I might come back with the wiggles.
Hop to
a hot potato.
Oh, man.
All right.
We got any outlying stations?
I don't think we called out to it.
I don't think we did.
But I did want to give a shout out to Billy Mitchell's doing the good work out there for the battalion,
taking pictures of some signs and sending them in to the OK podcast inbox there on Instagram.
So good stuff.
You know, we're big fan of signs.
And then these signs, especially trash signs.
We love it.
see if I'm going to see if I get chaps on the hooks.
Oh, love it. Hello.
Hey, chaps, this is Trash Five.
We forgot to send out the calendar invite for the slide updates for anything that
Chaplin might have to say.
You're a big part of the team.
We appreciate what you do for the team.
You're part of the team.
And I just didn't know if you had anything.
Maybe God's spoken to you recently or anything for the group.
With that, you're on mic with.
looks like there's 42 people in here on teams right now.
Probably most of them are paying attention, but over to you chaps.
Oh, yeah, sorry, I didn't get those slides updated in time.
I was out in the field, you know, doing prayer walks and stuff.
And just with everything going on in the world, you know, prayer walks are important.
And sometimes that reminds me of, you know, just the power that we have as Marines here in Trash Battalion,
but not only the power that we have through things like artillery, you know,
with, you know, the multiple domains that we are facing.
I know we've been talking a lot about, you know, cross domains and things like that.
And in another life, you know, you might think about even the web domains or, you know,
buying domains.
But, you know, power is important.
And that kind of reminds me of Second Peter, where it says,
his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the
knowledge of him who called us to his own.
glory and excellence. And I think that's really important because, you know, when we're, you know, spread across all of these domains,
it's important that we have our power rooted in what's really important. And that power gives us the
ability to conquer sin and death, but also most importantly, trash battalion to secure the trash. Nothing
else for the group. For each. Goal, sorry, I mean, excuse me, Cajum, sorry, Major, before I hang up with chaps,
do you have anything? Do you want to tell them about the Gelligella Gala Island Mobile Ministry team tomorrow?
No, so I was just going to remind him that the, you know,
we have a little cookout here coming up this week and love to see him out there.
We need a little prayer before we eat.
And then, you know, I'll throw him a week of leave.
But that's all I got for the group.
I'm not sure if he caught that, you know.
Yeah, there's a, I'm having a little signal issue.
Could you just get with, if you get with IT or, you know, that whatever battalion thing in the jig that is, sorry, I'm really rusty.
you haven't been to the book.
Yeah, we'll just send you Cages and Sartagnar's notes through RP, which is,
that's an acronym for religious person, which every chaplain has like a couple of them.
And their denominations not important.
They're just a religious person.
But yeah, we'll send it through RP.
But chaps, thanks for all you do.
And yeah, hopefully we got a new baby soon.
God bless.
Amen.
Peace be with you.
also with you.
You cannot convince me that that dude is not a real chaplain in the Marine Corps.
Chaps, like, he's probably better.
He's the most of them.
He's better than 99% of the ones I've met.
What if, what if he ended up, what if Nathan ended up joining the Navy?
Dude.
Coming to Newport, Rhode Island.
This is fired by trash battalion.
map with Newport locations and became, this could be his calling.
This could be the thing.
It could be one day he could be looking out of the sea of people and be like,
there was this podcast, there was this battalion, this cage and Sergeant Major spoke
to me in a way, and I was called by the Lord and by the OK podcast.
I don't see that as impossible.
It's not.
No, this is outside the real possibilities.
This whole podcast is all it is,
recruiting ploy to recruit chaplains to the Navy and Marine Corps.
Yeah, and Nate's a young guy.
Nate, you got till 42 now.
Yeah.
We're really up in the age and the physical standards of dropping,
which isn't a problem for you.
So you might not get paid.
That's another story.
Well, we don't do it for the pay.
Right.
That's right.
It's never been about the money.
Not ever.
Yeah, no.
It's been about the sea power.
When she talked a lot about God's power,
when Jeff and I have been a war on air and sea power.
Anyway, any more outlying?
Are we good?
Should we start the show?
I think we're good.
I think we should start the show.
If you're tuning in to episode 0125 for the first time,
and you thought that was absolutely ridiculous
and not sure why it took so long,
welcome to your service in the United States military
because we do these kind of exercises regularly.
Yeah, when you're in peace, prepare for war.
I've always said that.
Trey, you've been lifting?
Nah, push.
Oh.
Push.
Hey, great stuff.
Okay, running through the slide deck here.
Okay, right off the bat,
want to just get initial thoughts.
Like, okay, I feel like all, you know,
actually, I know all three of us are proud Americans and, you know,
love this country.
and like and have literally sworn an oath to support and defend and so we're big proponents of the American flag.
Okay, what's your thoughts on the line of like wearing the American flag like, okay, like a button up shirt that's got like a mirror.
It's like red, white and blue and stuff.
But like if it's like socks, shorts and I don't even like, I don't know if I'm sure it exists, but like underwear that's like the American flag.
You're unclear if that exists.
No, no, I know it exists.
You're not wearing it right now.
But I'm saying like, what are your, what's your take on that sort of stuff?
I'll feel like.
Oh, go ahead.
Well, no, I want to hear your off the cuff take, Trey.
But let's actually just do a little truth gun to the head.
Trey, what articles of clothing do you own with American Flax?
I'll be honest with you.
I don't think any.
Okay, you don't even have like a tie.
Do you need your strength-co shirts have flags on it? Yeah, I got a strength-co shirt.
Okay. Are you okay with that?
Yeah. So what I was going to say, I feel like there is a Dell curve to this to where like it's, you can be tactful if it's like small and like an appropriately placed.
Pan little American flag logo somewhere.
Zach War Pocket Square.
Yeah, and then like, then it can kind of get untactful, and you look like, I don't know,
I don't want to say like a goober, but it just, you look like you're trying too hard.
Yeah, it looks like you're trying too hard.
And then at the other end of that is it becomes so ridiculous because you're wearing so much American flag gear and that it becomes more acceptable again.
That's when you know you're on the Texas A&M campus.
Exactly.
So I feel like, yeah.
tactful, all right, you look weird.
And then it becomes like, this guy's so out there and loves America.
And he's wearing so much gear that it's awesome.
Okay, okay.
I own some American flag crocs.
Okay.
Exceptable.
I think so.
I don't wear them in public, though.
They're like, you know, blow the driveway,
maybe a shower shoe.
situation.
I have an American flag belt.
Okay.
I'm not wearing it now, but I wear it pretty regularly,
and it's all the flags from when there were the colonies through present.
I can dig.
It's still again, also acceptable.
Yeah.
I do own a pair of American flag shorts.
Okay.
Okay.
That I have worn on the 4th of July a few times.
Fourth of July, it goes.
The bell curve goes out the window.
It's out, like all bets are off.
Everything's, yeah.
And we get American flag in the OK podcast logo.
It looks right.
The bottom of the plate.
Yeah, which was kind of forthcoming of the American flag,
American 250 plate, which I didn't even know at the time.
Wow.
Wait till we make the OK podcast 45.
Yeah, right.
You're planning that far ahead.
C-Path.
Power.
Deep power.
But, yeah, I don't know why do you think it's acceptable or not.
Jeff obviously has.
Jeff doesn't even like cameras in the locker room.
No, I, you asked trade that question.
I'm like, okay, I have some T-shirts that have like, you know, the flag on the sleeve.
Got a hat that has like the American flag on it, like in the front.
And I think I have one pair of socks.
Yeah, I got a hat too.
Yeah.
But I was like thinking about it.
I'm like, is it kind of, if you got like short.
are like, to me, I'm like, all right, shouldn't we wear an American flag underwear?
Because, like, your butt is on the flag in my, like, that's kind of, and I almost said, like,
are socks?
Is it, like, weird that you're wearing, like, socks?
Yeah, you have, like, toe jam on the flag.
It's like, on the flag.
And I know it's not actually the flag, but, like, is it?
So that's where, like, my, that's where that, like, top.
For a guy who feels like, that's that field grade mine.
For a guy who doesn't trust his own farts, I cannot wear American flag.
I thought you even said the government.
Right.
Fars or government.
Yes, they're, you could, those are synonymous with each other.
We said this.
We said this.
It's interchangeable.
You could just swap those in any sentence.
That's why I draw the line at American flag underwear.
I just can't do it.
As out of respect, out of respect to the floor.
Out of respect.
I can appreciate that.
I can appreciate that.
I think George Washington also said that, right?
Was that what you?
Washington.
I cannot.
I cannot.
I cannot.
I wear a pair of American flag underwear but something I don't know but I'm not a but I'll wear my
wooden teeth we won't get into the wooden teeth okay well that's like that was kind of where I was
just wanted to kick around I thought I figured you two know some some good insights on that's
good question though it's good episodes let's wrap it all right yeah thanks everybody for listening
thanks for tune man that's what you came here for um I kind of get some chat
talk. Let me real quick
before I get sidelined with the birth of my child,
which I play a lot in that role.
Let's talk about a little update on the American
250 cast iron plate.
The American 250 cast iron plate,
it's here. It's at e-coters. It's exciting.
So the final, you've seen some real stuff. You've seen
you've seen the raw casting,
you've seen it been machined,
or maybe you haven't if you don't follow the strength on Instagram
or X,
you should.
We're live on X right now.
I do more kind of behind the scene stuff on X
than do anywhere else,
and not that it's behind the scenes,
I'm putting it to be seen.
But I've posted a lot of that plate
and it's progress and it's now at ECO,
which is fun because we will see the colorized version,
which I have seen a version of what it would look like,
but it wasn't on our product.
It was like a proof of concept.
Yes, we can do this.
So we're really close to that.
So they will go for sale probably prior to Veterans Day.
They will not go on sale for people that are thinking about Black Friday,
for people that think about waiting and saving.
This isn't a product you're going to save on.
There's a certain number that are made.
Half of those are already sold.
So if you want to make sure that you get a chance,
go to the website.
the notify me button but the america 250 plate uh is coming soon and it's it's it's cool it's uh better
it's better than expected if i'm honest it's uh and i'm always that never not been honest um yeah it's good
uh so make sure that you're all signed up for that anyway so i got a bit say about that i can dig it
all right all right um so yeah okay one in he one that's in here it's i'm assuming chow related is two
two bug lunch?
Yeah, you're tracking a two bug lunch?
I'm not tracking a two bug lunch.
I wasn't tracking a two bug lunch either.
And on, on, in conjunction with me getting my master's from the neighbor war college with my buddy, rather.
I'm also working on my New England citizenship.
So it's a comprehensive exam where you know more about New England than anyone that's from New England would ever know.
And I'm working on that.
And so I went and went to the Newport Lobster Shack.
Okay.
With my wife, daughter, and mother with the goal to get lobster rolls.
Okay, what do you think the price of a lobster roll is?
So market price for lobster.
Does it fluctuate?
Well, we're going to kind of get into that.
So like you're right by the source, right?
See.
Like literally where we ate the lobster boats are,
are pulling in.
So you have like what you could maybe think is Boston pricing,
which they have them right there too.
But like what do you?
We all agree that a lobster roll costs more than a sandwich.
Correct.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
I would say, Tray, what's your guess number?
I'm going to say, God, man, so hard without knowing the size.
I'll go 18 bucks.
Oh, okay.
That's a real.
I was going to say, oh, I was going to say 1899.
I have no concept.
Yeah, so I was, I was like there with you, Trey.
Okay, so let me help you guys out a little bit.
At the particular place we went to, you could get a chick.
So a lobster that weighs under a pound and a half.
Part of my New England exam is called a chick.
So you can get a chick lobster roll that's three ounces of lobster meat on the little, you know, bun.
Or you can get a normal lobster roll at six ounces.
Okay.
Okay.
What do you think that disparity is?
I was low.
I'm going to go to chick is the end.
$24.
And then...
How many ounces of that?
But you're attacking on a least an extra...
I'll go an extra $10.
I'll go $34.
Okay. You're in the right wheelhouse.
So the particular place that I was at,
the chick was $20.
And the full size was $30,
which is, in my mind, actually cheap for lobster rolls.
Lobster rolls, I'm used to being...
even at like a pub, a deli.
I'm used to seeing $38, $42.
So we go to get lobster rolls.
No, it's kind of crazy.
I'm at a touch as lobster markets.
Yeah, it's the reason sometimes you'll have lobster.
The chick's 20.
The full size is 30.
Or you can get a two bug lunch,
which is two whole lobsters.
Okay.
a corn on the cob and a side at coleslaw for $40.
It's like a bogo.
I don't know how you don't get the two bug lunch.
So I didn't know it was two bug lunch.
Yeah, it sounds like a screaming deal.
My mom and wife get the small lobster sandwiches.
They got a thing of lobster bites, which is basically like if the Cajun Sergeant Major cooked lobster, he'd just fry it.
And then I got the two lobster dinner plate, I think, is what they had it as on the menu.
And a lobster has about, a lobster, it's over a pound and a half, has about 40, 35 grams of protein.
So I just crushed two complete lobsters.
Every bit.
I ate the eyeballs, suck the brains out.
You bring your own way?
Yeah, I could have brought my own role.
And I sent a photo to Dan O'Connell a long time listening to the show.
And he said, in Massachusetts, we just call that a two.
bug lunch.
And I've never heard that.
And I'm ashamed.
I get it.
You get it.
You get it.
Now it makes sense.
So anyway, 40 bucks.
I mean, it was great.
It was great.
Yeah.
Anyway, that's two bug lunch.
Love good chow push.
That's a good chow push right there.
I got a place on chow radar.
Staying with the seafood topic.
Trey, you posted about Patagonia's
there can't, some of
They're tinned fish.
Dude, I will...
Like the muscles?
I will die on this hill.
Patagonia is a canned fish company that makes clothes.
Like, those...
Dude, those canned oysters and muscles are phenomenal.
They're good.
They're really good.
Peppers?
Dude.
Are they like anchovy style?
Yeah, the muscle.
Yeah, I mean, it's like, you know, tint and oil.
Tin can pull it open.
Uh-huh.
Okay.
I'll...
I'll send you some.
Well, I remember when I've discovered him because I was trying to send him to Grant's buddy when he was on deployment.
Oh, man.
They wouldn't let me.
So I just ended up...
Government again.
Yeah.
Postal service.
How many bugs are in this box right here, sir?
Too many bugs.
There's only two.
Deployed only allowed two bugs.
But, no, man.
Phenominal.
Like they're all the flavors are good.
The smoke ones.
I didn't even know.
I got to Google this.
I didn't.
Patagonia.
They used to have one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's just a picture of you, Jeff.
Oh, yeah.
Jacked in a Patagonia sweater.
Ten muscles by Patagonia provisions.
Dude.
They got some good stuff.
The line goes through a lot of flux, has gone through like a ton of flux over the last, I don't know, three years.
Send me the spicy muscles.
They're not spicy.
My opinion is like they're not spicy.
They're good.
No, they're not spicy.
It's a good flavor.
Yeah, if you want spice, you're going to be very disappointed.
Do this smoked in the lemon, smoked muscles.
Okay.
In the limit.
Those two are the-
Well, they got a whole category here of tinned fish.
Oh, dude.
It's all good.
Do these guys even sell clothes?
They don't, they need to quit and just focus on this portion of the best.
They got anchovies.
They got pink salmon variety pack.
Dude, the salmon's good.
It's good.
Oh, man, I got to get my omega-3s up.
Dude, it's some good stuff.
It's some good stuff.
They used to have one that was like an Ahi Molito spice, like tin muscle or whatever.
And they discontinued that one.
So when I discovered it, I was a little bit upset with Jeff that he hadn't brought up, brought this up sooner.
Yeah, it only takes 125 episodes.
Yeah, I go, Jeff, what's up with this?
and he texts me, he's like, oh, yeah, they're great.
And I'm like, quick gatekeeping, dude.
Just you got to share with the world.
Yeah, it's all right.
Yeah.
I do have a little sidebar.
Ooh.
If that's the only one that's going on,
we'll be keeping them to a minimum.
Yeah, driving down downtown Newport at Pass the Patagonia store.
Obviously, I'm always thinking about Jeff,
but it made me think about Jeff enough to text him.
So I took a photo at the store and sent it to him.
And Jeff, you seem to think it wasn't a real store.
Or that's not the right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm not an English major from Emerson.
I'm a Citadel graduate, never went to school, high school, don't have a GED.
I don't want to put words in your mouth, but it just, it's not a corporate-owned store.
So there's like the Patagonia-owned stores, like the one in Salt Lake, Atlanta, the ones in Boston.
but then there's like third parties can open up with their own kind of and just like
the naval academy versus the citadel has it spelled with like two A's or something no so it's like
you know it looks like a Patagonia usually on the inside and like they only sell Patagonia but it's
basically a wholesale account for Patagonia like all can't fish in there and like there but it's like
the employees aren't employed by Patagonia like a lot of them are in like ski resort towns
and so it's usually like Vail Resorts
who now owns like most
What's the one at Cardiff by the sea?
That's a Patagonia store.
Yeah, yeah, that's a corporate owner.
That's,
okay, so how do you, how can you tell?
I just knew that we didn't have any stores in Rhode Island.
You know, you test them, you go in and you go,
hey, can I have a sticker?
And if they say, I don't have it,
then it's not a real Patagonia store.
That is, is that true?
I don't know.
I feel like I got a sticker from the Park City store.
Utah. Is Park City
real? That one's owned by the ski resort.
Yeah. If it's like in a ski town like
Vale, Aspen,
Park City, like
the one in like Stowe, Vermont is like
owned by the resort. I have
Patagonia stickers all over my house. Just on
random stuff.
Patagonia store in Newport, Rhode Island is not
corporate owned. It's an independent business.
owned by Martha Packa.
No franchise license.
There's no franchise or licensing agreement with the national corporation,
though the store purchases and sells authentic Patagonia products
and follows their business rules and policies.
This business has served the Newport community for decades.
Nice lady.
Better selling jackets.
Yeah.
Patagonia and Newport.
And there's been a couple.
It says powered by Patagonia.
That makes more sense.
It's like the strength.
It's like the okay podcast.
It's like,
they must have a podcast.
Ah,
it makes sense.
It's like the okay podcast powered by Patagon.
Now I understand.
That's all you had to say.
Yeah.
Yeah,
yeah,
yeah.
It's so crazy that all roads actually do just like read or go back through Toledo.
Toledo.
Yeah.
Patagonia is born Toledo.
A lot of people don't know that.
That one just owned by the mud hands.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's called Thadagonia.
we have a lifting topic in there that we should hit quick before we divulge into the worst week of college football and the existence of the sport
I didn't think it was that bad but it was a it was a height um but yeah trade did you want to ask that question
i had two questions and one was specifically for the slack channel using grant bot and the other one had to do with genetics and lifting
you start with the latter okay i can't remember how i first
I'm raised it, Jeff.
Oh, the genetics one?
Yeah.
Okay, you said, how much do genetics play into getting strong?
Is it overblown?
Yeah.
Yeah, like, you know, have you ever started coaching someone who's, like, brand new lifting,
and, like, he can tell, like, oh, this dude just can, he was born with it.
Like, that dude can be able to lift a lot here pretty soon.
Yeah, his name's Trey.
Or is it over, or is it overblown?
No, kind of every time I deal with someone from Nebraska.
dude i think
trade
just a strong
just a strong dude
remember like
you just kept
when you first went on that
linear progression
when we were podcasting
she's like every week
yeah just added
I just added more weight
and just kept that
more way
and just like
is it ever going to stop
um
I'll answer that
if you would allow me to rant
for three minutes
because I don't have a baby
this week
and not make a YouTube video
hey guys welcome back
to scrant program
and today we're going to talk
about genetics
Do they matter? Are they overhyped? Are they overrated? Are they underrated? If you like the video, like and subscribe to the channel, genetics play a big part in strength training. They really do. A lot of people on the internet, social media influencers, collegiate coaches will talk about improving your standing vertical jump and making you stronger than you've ever been. There's this guy in the Strength Co YouTube channel that will talk about how you can get stronger regardless of what age you are. But what's
does what God gave you play into that. So let's talk about it. Genetics actually matter a lot.
Here's the thing. You cannot change them. Oh, duh. We often show on the front of the practical
programming book a stress recovery adaptation chart that is very useful. And it shows strength
adaptation over time as well as training complexity. And the point of the chart is mostly to show
people that when you are a novice, which means you have not done a novice linear progression or a progressive
overload before, you get strong very fast.
Novice doesn't mean that you're weak.
Novice doesn't mean that you've never worked out before.
Novice means that you've never taken the big barbell lifts, gone into the gym, and made small
incremental increases each time.
So we often say, who wants to be a novice?
Mark Ripito has a great article on this.
You do. You want to be a novice because if your goal is to get stronger, then you should use the barbell lifts that train the most of you at once and add a little bit of weight each time.
But if you've watched people do starting strength, maybe you've gone to a starting strength gym, maybe you've gone to the Strength Co, maybe you've gone or had an online coach or someone that has helped you through this and you've done it in a community where you see other people doing it alongside you.
you will notice some people can add five pounds to their deadlift week after week after week
or session after session multiple times per week and end up deadlifting 405 for five.
And some people get to 250 and they can't get the bar off the ground.
Now, we have stuff on this about recovery, about a good way to run a program.
That sleep becomes a thing that you have to look at, how much food you're,
eating becomes a thing that you have to look at. You know you must drink a gallon of milk a day.
No, but there are things that contribute to your adaptation to then keep putting weight on the bar.
But if you spend any time in the gym, and this is whether you're running starting strength or not,
you could think back to high school 20 years ago. There are some people that are just naturally
stronger than other people. It's just you've seen it. You've seen a guy and you're like, man,
what is this guy? Corn fed from Nebraska? Like, how is he so much stronger? And some of that is
genetics. And I often make a joke in my gym, and I'll make it here right now where I say,
all of you, because we will do barbell clinics once a month at the Strength Coen Costa Mesa,
if you're in Southern California or anywhere in California, you want to come to a starting
shrink gym, come visit us. And we will do barbell clinics on Saturday mornings, where we teach
people how to squat, press, and deadlift. And I will tell those people, as I'm explaining to them,
the stress recovery adaptation cycle, I will say, some people woke up this morning, put on a football
helmet, and are playing football for the University of Southern California, University of South
Carolina, Auburn, you name it. They're playing football right now, and even in this day and age,
getting paid to do it.
Do you know why?
Because they're better than you.
And some people paid $200 to walk through the doors of the Strancoe
and figure out how to do a squat.
What is the difference in those people?
Well, it's the genetics.
It's what God gave them.
It's their natural athletic ability.
And so I would say it's not overblown at all.
Your genetics play a huge role.
Now, I still believe consistency is king.
Discipline and consistency can make any,
strong enough, right? As strong as you need to be. Does everyone need to squat 500 pounds?
My answer to that would be no. If a guy runs the starting strength, novice linear progression,
and tops out at 405, can he be progressing to 500 over the next five years? Absolutely. But is everyone
need to be that strong? Probably not. But people have an individual genetic potential. So if you look
back at that practical programming cover, you would see the strength adaptation line goes up and then
makes a hard turn to the right. And it starts to fade out, to not go up as drastically into where
it's almost horizontal at the top. And what we teach new lifters or people understanding and
think about this for the first time is that you start to reach your individual genetic capacity.
And when you start to get there, that's when training complexity goes up.
That's when you have to start thinking about more things.
You have to think about your recovery, what you're eating.
How much does this matter to you, right?
You may have gotten your deadlift to 315 on zero sleep and not a lot of calories, but you really want 405.
Okay, that might be possible for you based off where your genetic ceiling is, but you're going to have to prioritize it more than other things in life.
Or you may say, hey, I'm a dad.
I got a couple toddlers at home.
I just don't want to look like a bag of crap when I go into work every day.
Okay, I'm not going to prioritize these recovery elements,
and I'm just going to ride up and then hang out.
But I think genetics is a really big factor, a huge factor,
and I don't think you can change it a whole bunch,
and I'll leave you with this.
Mark Ripito has a couple articles and some really good videos on the standing vertical jump.
And he believes, and I think he is correct,
that the most basic tests to find out your individual genetic potential is the standing vertical
jump.
And if you read some stuff, even outside of the starting strength world, it is something
that you cannot change very much.
It is the ability to recruit muscle neurons very quickly that allows guys in the NBA, Larry Bird,
or whoever, to jump really high.
They have a different level of genetic superiority than most of us do.
And if you look at these people, they generally, they may improve a little bit, a marginal
percent by practice and technique.
But being able to jump high is your usual best indicator to see if someone is super genetically gifted.
But whether you can not jump onto the tailgate of a car or whatever, if you can't
jump, don't worry. You can still get strong. You just may not end up as strong as the people from
Nebraska. Hope this video helps. If it does like, subscribe to the channel, we'll see you next time.
Great question, Trey. Thanks. Got that done. Yeah, that was good. Can you tell pretty quickly
when you're coaching somebody who's like just starting? Yeah. Well, yeah. I mean, so what I have
found is that people that are genetically gifted are usually, this isn't 100% of the case true.
but usually also like movement pattern gifted.
So like what I'm doing is trying to teach people where to put the bar on the back,
how to squat to depth, how to drive their hips up,
which is usually a new concept for people.
And people that take cues and get that really well,
usually end up being on the higher spectrum of getting strong.
And people that it's like, am I speaking Chinese to a robot?
those people generally still learn how to do the movement correctly but don't have the most
genetic success I would say within about three weeks maybe even less I can tell you know if a person's
going to do that and I want to be clear genetics is outside of if you send me a 25 year old
male that guy's got a lot of potential to be strong his testosterone's high
he's young, he's injury resilient because he's young, he's probably dedicated.
He's 25 and asking for a coach.
He's going to have a lot of success.
And that's different than I've coached probably a half dozen NFL players in my coaching time.
And that is wild.
That is why I coached one guy that played for the New York Giants.
And I remember it was crazy.
He was squatting, you know, he had never squatted.
I think he said more than 315, which is a lot of weight to the normal person, right?
And so I'm trying to build that disparity to understand like you're dealing with a different person.
But it was like 315, 325, 335, 345, 345, 35, into the 500s.
And movement path.
Yeah, it was crazy for three sets of five, three times a week, right?
It was a completely different thing.
offensive line. So genetics plays, I don't think it's overblown at all. I think, if anything,
what's overblown, this probably isn't even a point worth discussion, worth being a point of discussion
is like being able to improve genetics, standing vertical jump, or like some of these elements.
Like you can get yourself stronger, but your ability to do that, everyone that does a starting
shrink, novice linear progression. It's going to start conservative and make small jumps and therefore
make progress. How long does that last? How high does that go? That's the difference in genetics.
And I would say, I want to just throw some blankets out there. And I'm going to talk about consistent
people because you got to remember almost 15 years of coaching this. Most people are not consistent.
Most people do not do it year after year. But I have seen enough population over time that I've
seeing people that are consistent and do it year every year and have like some tenacity right they
they like actually care enough to try hard things and take sets down that they don't know if they can
come up and i think most talk males and then females most males a 315 squats achievable
a 4.05 deadlift's achievable 225 bench press achievable and i you're just using beautiful
strength, complete, you know, denominations. Sure, whatever, but 375 to 425, whatever, but somewhere
around 400, somewhere around 300 in the squat, somewhere over 200 pounds in the bench. Those are all
achievable, I think, for most people. And that's a little bit regardless of body weight. If you're
5'5 and you weigh 150, maybe that's difficult. But I don't know what the average man size is right now,
but let's just say you're talking, you know,
5-8 to 6-foot males between 165 and 200,
which I think is probably somewhere of the preponderance of the population,
unless you're talking obese people,
which probably aren't lifting weights.
Yeah, like those numbers are real.
When I see anyone, I don't care if they're 40, 50, 20,
if someone deadlift's 500, I'm like,
oh, that guy's a little bit above average, right?
Like, he's better than average.
If I see you deadlifting 600, it's like gear or like gifted.
You know, there's like there's some things that do it.
And if you're dead lifting 7, 8, 900 pounds, there's probably something going on,
which is fine.
It's a free country.
Do what you want?
Would you say how often, do you think it's over, like, overused as an excuse of like,
oh well I'm just not genetically
get into this.
Do people like, how often
do people actually like kind of like in
approaching your actual
like genetic potential like that's like one thing
but like how many people like actually
tap into as much as possible?
Taping as much as possible.
I think there are people that get super
convinced that strength training as
age is very important
and they go as close their limits
as they can. Like those people
exist. I don't think I see people that say, I'm just going to stop at 275 because I'm genetically weak.
I don't think that I've seen people like use that as a scapegoat.
Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, it's, I mean, I was in the gym, you know, six months ago,
training some classes and there was a guy who's probably 5-8-170.
and he was squatting in the upper threes for sets of five.
And there was a guy that was six, three, two, 40, two, 30, both around our age,
you know, somewhere between 30 and 40 and squatting less.
And someone asked me in the gym, like, hey, how's that, why is that little guy just
as strong as that big guy?
And they're both very dedicated and getting very strong, right?
And I was just like, oh, well, that's genetics.
Like this guy's a bit more gifted because they've both been training about the same amount of time.
Like in that particular scenario, all things were kind of equal.
So you could actually say like, oh, the difference that we're seeing here is genetics.
But anyway.
Interesting.
Yeah.
I wonder if there's an age, I guess kind of going off what Jeff was saying, if there's an age like,
I think we all have all been there where you switch from.
I'm going to get as strong as I can
to like, oh, I'm just lifting to
be healthy.
I feel like there's a switch that all,
mainly guys, I would say, go through that.
Like, when you first started this,
were you like, oh, I'm just going to do this for longevity
or you're like, no, I want to get as strong as I can.
Just maybe more ego.
I think, I think, like, big and strong and ego,
I think they're a little bit different, right?
because I think I have a lot of old people at the gym or online that would tell you I'm trying to get as strong as I possibly can.
That is a way phrasing.
No, no, no, but I think it's important.
I actually think it's an interesting tidbit for conversation, but they would say,
I am trying to get as strong as I possibly can.
Does that mean something different to a 60-year-old than 20-year-old?
Probably.
The 20-year-old is probably caring about his biceps, caring about his aesthetic more.
whereas the old person is,
I don't want to be put into hospice.
My kids hate me.
It's either I can walk up the stairs
or they put me in a home, right?
So I think there's a kind of distinction.
I'm kidding on the kids hate me part,
no one to me hate male.
But I think there's a distinction there.
I mean, you know,
a lot of times we think big and strong
and particularly as men,
we think of like being jacked.
And yeah, I care way less about that now.
Right?
I mean, I now it's like, I've also learned over time and built, you know, a strength base of like, hey, if I maintain my squat between 315 and 350 and my deadlift over 400 and my bench in the upper twos, like I can wear a shirt and not look like a scumbag.
I can go do these physical activities.
The Marine Corps needs me to do.
I can assist my wife, you know, when she needs help.
I can do things with my children.
You know what I mean?
It's like, hey, does deadlifting 600 make that better than deadlifting 450?
And I'd probably make the argument like, no.
Am I probably wrong in that?
Yes.
But the time it would take to like get over that hump, I'm not sure.
It's is worth it.
But yeah, I know I think guys, I think people that have lifted intelligently, it's,
It's a hobby at one point, which I would say more than a hobby.
I'd say at one point it was a passion for me.
Like, I care about this a ton.
I still care about it a ton.
More of a necessity almost.
But it's more of a, hey, I just got to do this for life, you know.
Yeah, at some point in time, you quit caring about like trying to hit a PR and it's due.
Is that kind of what you're saying?
Yeah, I think so.
And I think to maintain strength over the long term, you have to be like kind of trying to push the envelope in some way.
But I mean, right now, you know, we talked about last week.
I'm lifting in my basement.
I mean, I am dodging every HVAC pipe every time I step the squat out.
And I thought I had it figured out like the silo that I could squat in.
But I'm like, man, I'm not going to walk out something that I'm nervous about.
and come up on rep 2 and hit some pipe when she puts me off balance going into my next
rep and like, you know, tweaking my back and missing a squat.
So, you know what?
I'll just squat 325 again, 3.75, right?
You know, so and that's probably good enough for it's, I'm also checking my phone during the
workout to see if my wife's in labor, you know?
So it's like that's kind of enough.
Fair enough.
I think that's what you were driving at.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, life kind of dictates that for sure.
Yep.
That's why we're powered by the Strength Co.
That's right.
That's right.
Okay.
Well, should we get into some college football?
Yeah, let's do it.
Week zero.
I love how, I love, when people start counting with zero.
I can't wait for, I'm sure y'all are when your children are counting.
You're going to be like, okay, we're going to start with zero.
zero is going to be first
it's like next one this is week
one why are we
that's a week zero thing
but there's no week zero next week so
or next year there's no weeks
did you how many of those games did you watch
zero um
I figured you did
what I know
I just part of the North Carolina
TCC game
I followed that game I was at the gym
and it was on so it was like I kind of
parked myself by that TV
I'll be honest
And we did the podcast about it.
I was shocked on Saturday
when I opened my phone,
see what time the Red Sox played,
and realized that there was college football games going on.
In my mind,
it's September.
And that's not, I'm not making a,
it should be September, whatever,
but I was,
oh,
like Chapel Hill and TCU is this Saturday?
I was,
uh,
yeah,
I was surprised.
Man, this was a
I realized
this college football season is going to be
I don't want to say unwatchable for me
because I won't get it
basically I won't get a chance to watch it
I tried turning on the
North Carolina game and immediately
had to turn on like
the wiggles. Yeah
so if it's a
11 to 230 game I don't think I'm going to get to
watch it. But if it
it's like pack 12 after dark like I'll be super up to date I watched the uh you and LV the
Memphis game yeah oh yeah oh yeah yeah it's great game that's what I heard that was
a lot of fun I caught part of the USC game which they're fans Southern Cal let's be clear
excuse me yeah yeah yeah we're from the South all lower case USC right in Texas yeah yeah
Yeah, Auburn.
Auburn.
Auburn.
Do you see how it worked at Auburn into the YouTube video?
Yeah, I did.
I did.
Auburn.
Intentionally didn't say A&M, yeah.
Yeah.
Auburn.
But, man, yeah, that USC crowd.
No one was there.
They had like, I like, people.
I googled out.
I was like, how many people were at the USC game?
And it was like, officially, they gave, they said 51,000, whatever, blah, blah.
And I was like, oh, my God.
It's out.
Yeah, like, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
And I was like, yeah.
Like, okay, sure, guys.
Yeah, 51,000.
It was like 2000.
It was bad.
And I get it like, they're like, oh, well, it was hot.
You're in California, dude, can't be that hot.
It can't be that bad.
It's not really even the heat that gets you.
So true.
It's the humidity.
Yeah.
Once there's none.
There's not out there.
No excuse.
Yeah.
Actually, it was the most humid week in California history.
What?
70%.
Last?
you know, I don't even know what the percentage is,
but I had multiple people tell me that.
I also didn't fact check it, but I believe it.
They're trustworthy sources.
It's probably just like a normal amount of humidity.
Yeah, like 20%.
Yeah, but like just like a little, little.
Like USC is supposed to have like a good team this year.
They're hopeful.
Dude, top 20.
Yeah.
And it's like, Matt Barkley still their quarterback?
Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Charles Barkley is the backup.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They're going all Barclay.
since anyone can play college football now.
It doesn't matter how old you are.
Yeah, bring a pro.
Bring a pro guy in.
You just sign wherever.
So there was that game that I thought was pretty interesting.
USC is going to be good.
They have a lot of weapons.
A lot of people coming back.
Yeah.
Talking about South Carolina, right.
Lenores.
I actually think they're going to be good.
South Carolina.
But the other one, dude, Florida State.
That coach is going to get fired like next week.
A hundred percent.
They look terrible.
dude, Norville's gone.
Were they kind of trying to do air power?
Sea power is not recommended on the football field.
There's not a lot of water.
Some people are air power.
Some people are sea power.
That might be their problem.
They might have been on tea power.
I'm I formation power.
Yeah, the power I.
Yeah, the power I.
It's a good formation.
No, man.
Like you said, there were some good games.
So it was very
I think I maybe picked UNLV to win
But I was very glad to see Memphis pulled it out
Because I was very upset this week
I was very upset to see that
Jackson Arnold well I don't know where his stat line ended at
But like had a decent first half at Leafs
And I was like really
This guy was a bum at Auburn for two
Granted I think a lot of it was you freeze
But everyone always uses my name
When they want to throw a disclaimer out
All right. Yeah, I was like, Jackson Arnold.
But we do.
We do need to pull up the pitch real quick, which I'm all my friends.
I can't.
Was it a real?
Was this week a pick-em thing?
No, this coming week is the first one.
Okay, good.
If you click the website over the ESPN one we're doing.
Yeah.
Okay.
So if you're not a member of the Slack channel, you can come remember the Slack channel.
You can use OK.
Go to Strength.
Click coaching at the bottom.
Go to the Slack channel.
and you can use Grant Bot for coaching,
which we'll probably talk about more in depth next week.
But it's usually $29 a month to get access to five-star strength coaches,
a community of over 200 lifters.
We have a lot of code written in there.
So if you're running starting strength and you feel lost,
you can literally just talk to Grant Bot, get instant answers,
and they are coded with what the starting strength answer would be.
It's not just chat GPT 4.8 or GROC or whatever we're on.
But we also have a sports channel where we talk sports.
and you can, we have a pick them group.
And if you're in there, you can join it.
Also, if you want to join it, just DM us on the OK podcast
and we'll send you the link and you can come join us and check us out.
I think we've got about 20 people in there right now or something like that.
But yeah, come come check it out.
Okay, I thought I missed the first week.
I'm glad I didn't.
No, it's just coming week.
Okay.
Sweet.
But,
Have you pointed out?
Yeah, I got the, yeah, week one picks.
Okay, cool, cool.
And now it's time for Trace's picks of the week.
I'm going to keep it quiet.
I got a wife and labor.
Yeah, is a completely silent labor.
What day is the baby coming?
I'm going to go tomorrow.
Okay.
Oh, this is our first pick.
Oh, I like it.
Yeah, first pick.
Well, then I go day after tomorrow.
How?
Okay, so Trey is going to second.
How heavy was your first?
Isabella.
Baby?
Yes.
How many?
How many?
How many?
How many?
How many?
How many?
How many?
Strength go plates?
Roughly.
She was seven pounds, I think, six ounces.
She was due on the 17th.
She came at 12.20 a.m. on the 18th.
So about 20 minutes late, which was embarrassing to me.
I'm a T.S.
guy.
I'm an artilleryman.
I was disappointed.
You'll never truly
lover. I'll go
tomorrow.
Today is the due date
for just to give you full context.
I don't want you to make a pick.
Actually, disclaimer.
In California,
had a doctor. Remember, it's all girl math.
Do dates are girl math.
So it never makes sense.
They're going to base when the due date is
based off the last time they know you weren't pregnant
which doesn't make a lot of sense.
you could make the argument that it makes sense
but it's a straw man argument
and I'm not a straw man argument guy
that's like saying air power
superior to sea power
It is though it is
Yeah I mean in as a wars are one on land
Babies are born on land
Okay sometimes in tubs
But most of the time on land
Not all done
You can do it at an airborne
Yeah
Airborne shoot to kill
I'm gonna go tomorrow
And I'm gonna go 710
Wait wait wait wait wait wait
You need this piece of information
California told us our due date was September 6.
So we rode like seven months into the due to the pregnancy saying September 6.
Okay.
And then we got to Newport, they were like Rhode Island for you, New Englanders, September 1st.
I'm going to go with these ghost doctors.
Yeah, me too, obviously.
Okay, let's see.
I'm going to go tomorrow.
I'm staking with it.
Tomorrow's second.
I'm sticking with a third.
I'm going with third, yeah.
Okay, so we got tomorrow, we got a third.
All right, so I'm going to go, Jeff, what time on the third?
Oh, garsh.
What would be the most inconvenient for you?
Yeah.
I was going to go convenient.
I got a seminar tomorrow on the American Revolution in the afternoon.
And then Thursday.
Oh, yeah, I hope that baby's listening.
Until 1 p.m.
1,300 few military types.
Right.
And then I'm off for four days for Labor Day.
So it'd be really great.
She goes into labor.
On Labor Day weekend.
That's why they named that.
Have the baby on Thursday afternoon.
So I'm going for the third as well.
God's going to answer my prayers.
Yeah.
It's like, you know,
1,500.
Yeah, 1500.
Thursday.
Perfect.
All right.
Do you got to wait?
Settled.
7.1.
7.1.
Okay.
That'd be good for D.
Yeah.
93 would match the Gamecock schedule this year, but I'm going to go 7-on-1.
Maybe they'll be 7-1 at one point.
Hopefully, maybe we'll see it.
Yeah, it'd be great.
Auburn.
Auburn.
Yeah.
7-3.
7-3.
Gamecox headed into the Clemson game.
7-3 on 9-3.
Here we go.
That's what we're shooting for.
Very nice.
All right, you want to do these picks?
Let's do these picks.
Let's do these picks.
Speed picks.
All right.
First up, I got Tulane versus Duke.
Assuming at Duke, I need to figure out who's, which team they put it at home, top or bottom.
Prison Man.
Guy on top always wins.
Yeah, it must be at Duke.
I'm going to go.
I'm going to Duke.
I'm going to Duke there.
I'll go Duke.
Spurrier.
Okay, I picked Duke also.
Boston College at Cincinnati.
Go Eagles.
I'm going to go Cincinnati.
Yeah, I picked Bearcats.
Next up, we got Baylor versus Auburn in Atlanta at Marbury's Ben Stadium.
Auburn.
Auburn.
I'm going to go Baylor.
I'm going to go Baylor.
I think I am like, like there's a lot of people like, oh, yeah, Auburn's a, you know, over a touchdown favorite.
I'm like, L.L.A.
said War Eagle, Auburn.
Oh, never mind. I got to change my vote.
Okay. I don't know. DJ Lagway
is the quarterback at Baylor.
I think it's going to be a close game. I think it's
Auburn. But I picked Auburn.
Auburn by three touchdowns.
Ooh, I like the confidence.
I like it. I like it. Okay.
Wyoming at Colorado State.
Toledo.
Might as well.
Might as well pick them. Who cares?
I think Toledo.
Wyoming?
at who are they playing Colorado State the Rams
yeah I'll go Wyoming I'll go Cowboys okay I picked Colorado
I mean Cowboys have dominated Rams over time that's true
empirical evidence who and empirical data yeah yeah big big matchup of the Tigers
versus the Tigers we got Clemson going into Death Valley but the Tiger Stadium
Death Valley, the one in
Louisiana.
Go Tagas.
I'm going to go
NFL
as you. So I'm picking.
Okay. I'm going LSU.
Go tagging. I picked LSU.
Next up,
we got UNLV
versus Hawaii.
The game is at Hawaii.
It's Aloha Friday.
no work till Monday
I'll go UNLV
okay a little bounce back for him
I got Hawaii
I picked Hawaii as well
I picked Hawaii as well
The rainbow warriors
Next up the marquee matchup of the week
We got Western Kentucky versus Nevada
Ollie
Oh man
I wish the eastern Kentucky guys were playing
I'll go Western Kentucky
I'm good Nevada
Okay I picked Western Kentucky
in Kentucky.
A little California matchup
here. We have UCLA
going up to the Bay Area to
pay the Cal Bears.
Give me the Bears.
I think UCLA is going to be pretty good this year.
Is that the Bruins versus the Bears?
It is the Bruins versus the Bears.
So they're both bears.
They're both in California.
Okay. War Eagle.
And there's no Bears in California.
Hey.
Yeah.
I think there are.
I'm going to Bruns.
So Cal.
All these wins.
Okay, okay.
I picked Cal.
So,
Trey,
who did you say?
Make a note.
I said UCLA.
I said UCLA.
Oh, yeah,
we haven't been making notes.
Making a note.
Making a note.
Okay,
we'll start back over then.
We haven't been making notes.
We've got Louisville versus Ole Miss.
I'm going to Ole Miss there.
At Ole Miss.
Get more,
Cal,
yeah.
Good number,
number nine versus number 24 matchup.
Always like a ranked on
rank matchup.
Especially week one.
It really helps.
It really helps because we really know.
Red school.
It's Mississippi State.
My bad.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sorry.
Rale State.
Wrong school.
What is shot at Ole Miss, man?
More Caldell.
They would hate you for that.
You know what I say about Mississippi State girls.
I get older.
They say to stay the same.
Always said that.
He has always said that.
every episode.
If you go back and listen,
if it's your first episode, it is your first
episode listening, go back and listen to every episode
and you'll hear Grant say that on every single one.
And then the last one here.
About to go by stroke.
Stroke Co.
SMU.
Southern Methodist University
versus Florida stroke.
Oh, you know, Florida State.
Excuse me.
Give me SMU.
SMU, baby.
George W. Bush.
Okay.
Okay.
We all picks it.
What are the Mustangs?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Tony Express.
Yeah.
Tony Express, baby.
Okay.
So that's week one.
Not to be confused with week zero, which was the first week of the season.
So week one is the second week of the season.
Do you know the South Carolina has?
Keep that straight.
Can't stay.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
Go Cucks.
A&M's got Missouri State.
I love states.
Oh.
State schools.
States.
States rats.
States rats.
States rats.
You know why?
Because we're from the sand.
Get you.
There's more Cal Bell.
Go Tigers.
Go Tigers.
More Cal Bell, baby.
Man, oh, man.
Yeah, we'll see how many.
Did you see, so, of course, like, going back and forth, like, LSU or schools are like,
yeah, we're going to sign these NFL players and then Big Ten and SEC commencing.
No, you're not.
we're going to, you know, carry out penalties against you if you do.
And then they're like, well, this judge says we can.
And now the SEC is like, again, like posturing.
Basically, just telling Lane Kiffin, like, no, we're still going to, we're still going to carry out some sort of punchments against you if you do it.
So it's just like there's no rules.
No one can enforce anything because they'll just find a judge that's favorable to whatever their side is.
We're going to tax you.
No, you're not.
We're going to have a tea party.
We're going to tax you anyway.
Watch this.
We're going to fight you with communist ideology.
Wait, what?
But it should be interesting because I guess what, like,
rosters have to be finalized or had to be finalized or something like that.
I don't know.
It's going to come to a head.
And like, it's got to here pretty soon.
These judges are, tell me they're getting paid off.
You have to.
Some random judge and dowels.
Dude.
Dude.
Yeah.
Cajun Sergeant Major is rolling up with a bag of gumbo and a bag of cash.
and a bag of leave
and a photo of the judge on Epstein Island
Ayo
you're going to have to
allow you're going to have to
allow this to happen right here
we're going to sign Miles Garrett
okay
Epstein Island
I'm sorry was that out of left field
nah
Grandpa made the image
Cajun Sergeant Major
he made you need
Grandpa to make it
I can't wait to generate an episode of Cajun Sergeant Major on Epstein Island,
giving out leave.
That's going to...
I thought this was Toledo.
I thought that we were here for the shrimp ball.
I thought we...
The road just brought me here.
I was all...
I went through Toledo and I found myself on Epstein Island.
I'm on this island.
Oh, man.
Oh, goodness gracious.
Are we getting any hung ordinance?
Hey, Dovsey.
season. Start today. I'm going,
I'm going out this weekend.
Ooh.
What's the limit?
I'm not doing this weekend.
Dove hunting. You're not going. Dove hunting.
Yeah. Yeah. I figured.
Yeah, it makes sense.
So you're kind of an air power guy then if you're going dove hunting.
Actually, I'm anti-air power.
He's anti-air. Yeah.
Yeah. Oh, you, you perceive the doves are pro air power.
Yeah.
Okay, got it. Yeah.
I would think the bullet is.
the air, but yeah, anyway.
Right.
You know, lightning from the sky,
thunder from the sea.
That's what we've always said.
Any more hung out ordinance?
Got a Costco membership.
Oh, nice.
Up here we just call those BJs.
Hey.
It's like the same thing.
It's like the same thing.
It's in New England.
It's not.
Go get a hot dog.
if you're not watching
YouTube you're an idiot
oh man
no that's it
yeah well
great episode
we did it again
yep
but hey
hopefully you're not here next week
like on the podcast
like we hope you're still on the podcast
yeah
yeah I want you
I want you on play Eric
yeah yeah
well unless you walked off the edge
because it's flat
I want to be on the edge
stay away from the edge
that Chesapeake Bay.
Stay away from straight to Hormuz.
It's flat.
She's straight across.
Oh, oh.
Read it out loud, Tray.
100 of sea power.
It's cut off.
100 wars, I'm guessing, is what that says of sea power.
Years.
Years.
Ah.
Yeah.
I get it.
It's Texas education.
that the history of air warfare.
Hey, it's only a lot of reading if you do.
Hey, only a lot of reading if you do it.
Hopefully there's some pictures in that book.
Just, you know, just all kinds of.
You know, we need to, like, let's look at this.
This one is the good book here, you know, the other good book, you know.
And then, look, can we, we just, we just knew how to condense things down.
For those listening, there's pictures.
Jeff is comparing.
air warfare
