Hey everybody, welcome back to the People Process Progress podcast on this episode 71
if for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players, I am doing another adaptation.
I've done a few more for project managers, planning section chiefs for America.
I really love this work.
As I've said before, it's framed on my wall, the original by Richard Kipling.
And this time I thought, you know, I'm do been thinking about Jiu Jitsu, been's framed on my wall, the original by Richard Kipling. And this time I
thought, you know, I'm do been thinking about jujitsu, been out for a little bit, had eye
infection. So we're ready to get back there. And it's a great, great thing that I've talked about.
So here's my interpretation of Kipling's if for Brazilian jujitsu players, or for folks that don't
do it, maybe this can give you a bit of an insight.
If you can accept loss starting from day one, when everyone else is better than you.
If you can make it through warm ups with those around you and still complete the drills and
some rolling too.
If you can be patient with your own progression or be happy for those who move up faster than
you, or wish them well though you may be jealous and yet keep showing up knowing one day you'll
rank up too if you can dream about the moves you didn't hit today if you can build on the positions
you were able to maintain if you can hip escape trap and roll and break guard and continue to
build on the basics as a foundation for your game if you can take the tough feedback from your
professor and not lose heart when you're told where you need to improve or not dwell on last night's class because you didn't win the roles with others and understand we're on the
same team with the people in our gym. If you can appreciate a good move that someone used to tap
you out and they are thankful that you are helping them improve and tap and start again to finish the
round and at the end of the role shake hands get water and take some breaths if you can force
your mind body and soul to push through when it feels like there is no air in your lungs or blood
in your muscles and so push on to train with more partners with the will within you that says roll
on if you can talk to your teammates as you take a break or ask the professor good questions about
the moves you drilled if neither your ego nor learning from loss can discourage you,
if the grind of physical challenge and hardships appeal to you,
if you can fill time outside of class and conditioning
with sprints and weights and exercise that pushes to
and possibly get cauliflower ear,
live with sore joints and the occasional black eye,
yours will be the life of a grappler and BJJ player.
And which is more, you'll have fun.
I hope you all had as much fun with this short episode as I did,
kind of writing it and being able to share some insight into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
And if you're not into that, I hope you just enjoyed the rhyme and the lyrics.
Read Kipling's original If. It's fantastic.
It's very good work.
Thank you all so much again for coming by. I hope you're all doing well out there.
Please stay safe, wash those hands, and Godspeed.
