The People, Process, & Progress Podcast - Balance Helping Others with Just Rolling | You-Jitsu #26
Episode Date: April 15, 2023As a salty, 49-year-old Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Blue Belt practicing BJJ for 4.5 years, I like to help folks just starting their BJJ training. When I sweep a white belt, then move to Mount, I often ...see the "deer in the headlights" look on their face. So, I have often walked them through the arm and leg trap and then bridge escape. Long this theme when a white belt tries a submission, but it's not..umm...good at all; I'll talk them through what I think they were trying to do. But sometimes, I want to roll, and that's ok.

Hey everybody, welcome back to the KevTalks podcast, Jiu Jitsu edition.
So again, this is the previous Jiu Jitsu podcast I hosted, folding in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focused
content.
This one is balancing helping others with just rolling and it's Jiu Jitsu number 26.
So what does that mean?
It means, so for me, I've been training about four and a half years in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. So see new folks come in.
And I feel bad sometimes when, you know, I sweep them and get them out.
That's when I'm on top of them.
And they get this deer in the headlights, look, big eyes.
What do I do?
I'm like, okay, here's this trap and roll thing.
Or here's how you frame.
Of course, breathe, frame, survive, Ki and Jiu-Jitsu.
And I help them, right?
And so sometimes we'll be rolling again.
And maybe white
belts start to learn a little bit more training for you know six months or a year they're like
oh here's a submission here's that and they go for it maybe it's awful then maybe it's kind of
there and you're like okay try these things and kind of help them do it and you know give them
the tap with that but sometimes I just want to focus on my role, right? I want to roll and just maybe I'm
going to sub them five times during the role. Maybe I want to roll hard and just hold position,
something like that. And that's a balance, right? So as you build your skills, if you're building
skills as a white belt and brand new folks come in, or you're a blue belt, I can't speak to purple.
I'm not that I'm a blue belt. And so, you know, maybe you want to do that as well. So to me, it's a balance.
So certainly help new folks, whether it's, oh, here's how you shrimp and here's how you
frame and combine those to get out of positions.
And if you have an intro program, that's awesome.
If not, you know, take someone under your wing.
But then I feel okay with rolling your roll, right?
Part of, to me, the beauty, but also the challenge of Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu is getting smashed and keep showing up. And sometimes you just you want to throw
submissions, right? Especially white belt, it's great, because typically you can get them now as
they get better, and they get closer to your level. That's tough. If they're younger and
stronger, they start training more, especially for me, I'm older, I'm in good shape. But you know,
I feel the difference between, you know, rolling with someone else my age and rolling with someone that's 30 years younger
than me or 20 years younger than me or whatever. So anyway, but roll your roll sometimes as you're
helping. Don't feel like you have to help somebody all the time. It's okay, right? Sometimes you need
to get your moves in. You need to also level up yourself. And that doesn't mean also as a blue
belt to just roll with white belts, right? You got to get those moves in. You need to also level up yourself. And that doesn't mean also as a blue belt
to just roll with white belts, right?
You gotta get those challenging rolls
with blue belts that are coming up
or at your level or better than you
that are almost purple belts, clearly.
And then certainly roll with those upper belts.
So balance your growth with how you help others.
Keep showing up to Jiu-Jitsu.
