Hey everyone, welcome to Foundations Friday episode 9, Don't Forget to Breathe.
This applies to so many things.
I was prompted to focus on this today from a newsletter that I get from the Jiu Jitsu
Brotherhood, which is from Nick Gregorius, probably killed his name there, who's a high
level black belt.
He's also the one that coined the, I think the term, you you know yoga is the martial art you do against yourself which i think is
brilliant and in this aspect it's really in jujitsu which is which for folks that aren't
familiar it's a grappling art right so you're wrestling people trying to get joint locks
chokes a lot of that kind of stuff if you watched early ultimate fighting championships it was the
gracie guy that was choking people out arm bar, and it's that.
So it's hard, and you get exhausted using all your muscles.
You're breathing hard.
You're nervous.
You're all hyped up.
I mean, it's a grappling fight.
So in his aspect, his focus is, right, your performance, just like any other activity, is focused on your breathing.
If you're not breathing, you're not going to be able to oxygenate your blood. It's going to spread throughout your system. It's
going to help your body move and your brain work better and you not freak out like you can't
breathe, which has happened to me sometimes. But in today's day and age, it applies more to just
jujitsu, right? It applies to that time your kids are just pushing all your buttons. You've told them for the fourth time to do something.
You've asked them nicely, and then you've escalated, and you're about ready to explode, and we just have to breathe.
It applies to the difficult business meeting where folks are going back and forth, talking over each other.
Nothing's getting done.
You're going in circles.
Maybe you have the answer that folks are saying that no one has the answer to, or you can help guide them there.
Breathe. Take the breath. Insert yourself appropriately into the conversation.
Help drive it to resolution. Maybe you're driving in your car and someone's just going really slow
or they're not driving well or whatever it is,
breathe, right? We've all heard of road rage incidents. We've all get impatient sometimes.
Maybe it's late in the evening. You're picking your child up from practice. You've had a long day.
Breathe, right? You're in a space where you're picking up kids. You're an example.
Don't speed off. Don't smash the gas. We're all there to get our kids.
We're all in the same boat. Maybe you've been locked down for a year. We see the light kind
of creeping through. Maybe we're ready to start peeling back the blanket of fear a little bit
with practical, hey, there's a lot of folks that have gotten vaccinated and there's new guidance out even from the CDC, right?
Hey, if you're vaccinated and you're with other people, your risk is way down.
Of course, the masks are still recommended.
But breathe.
We have to breathe, which helps control our minds, our bodies, our soul, our psyche.
Insert whatever there, but it starts with our breathing,
with controlling it, with taking that breath that helps us calm down, that helps us focus,
that helps us manage our fears, whatever fears you may have. I know I have plenty.
I have to remember to breathe when I fly, when I'm getting crushed in jujitsu,
when I see my kids fall and they're hurt. You know, breathing helps control
the next actions we take directly after that.
So I thank you all for taking the time to play this message.
