The People, Process, & Progress Podcast - Some People Will Surpass You and That's Ok | Foundations Friday 88
Episode Date: March 31, 2023There are people that started training Jiu Jitsu that are now better than me. There are people in my professional life that have surpassed me in position and knowledge. As Jocko Willink says, "Good."....Why is this "Good"? In Jiu Jitsu, it's good because, through hardship, we celebrate each other's success. We sharpen each other with each roll because we learn to supplant the ego and celebrate others' wins.In business, this can be a little harder. But when someone advances, and we don't, we can ask ourselves, "How can I also move up?".So, celebrate your teammate's wins on the mats and in the boardroom.Godspeed ya'll,Kevin

Welcome to Foundations Friday number 88, your people will surpass you and that's okay.
I thought of this at first in jujitsu where there are people that started after me
and they're better than me now. They tap me out. But why is that? It doesn't bother me so much
other than me wanting to push myself. So why is that again? It's because they keep showing up more than me.
They may be younger, a little faster, but they're more consistent, right? And some folks have
natural talent, but largely in jujitsu, it's because they keep showing up. They keep working
hard. They've gone more than me. I had a bit of a layoff and it's cool to see. And I feel like
jujitsu has helped me. So I don't get all egotistical and like, man, that shouldn't be, and they shouldn't do this. And I'm sure there's folks that has helped me so I don't get all egotistical and like, man,
that shouldn't be and they shouldn't do this.
And I'm sure there's folks that started after me that are going to get promoted before me.
And that's cool.
It's good to see it's a cool thing when you have physical struggle with other folks.
And you can celebrate with them and not worry about it.
So if you're a Jiu Jitsu player, and there's folks that are getting better than you and
catching up to you and starting to tap you, you know, try harder,
but congratulate them.
Ask them how they got you.
Learn from it.
Professionally, there's also people that may start after you, that get promoted before you, or that develop skill sets and get chosen to do things that you don't get chosen to
do, or whatever it is.
And if you had a hand in helping them get there, that's great, right?
So you helped somebody else do better.
You helped advance them.
You taught them things.
And then that's where you really got to kind of check yourself and say, am I upset about
this?
Because I wanted to get that promotion because I wanted to do these things.
I wanted to be part of that.
I've caught myself in my own ego loop before.
So I think on this Foundations Friday, it's good to think about
who you've helped, how you can keep helping them. If they advance or go somewhere else or get the
job that you thought would be super cool, then great. Celebrate them. Do for others. It's actually
pretty therapeutic if you focus on other people and it's hard to do sometimes when we're working
and we're like, man, I worked so hard for this. And so other folks will
pass you in life professionally on the jujitsu mats. That's okay. Right? As long as you're
getting better, are you better than you were yesterday? Incrementally doing good, trying your
best. That's pretty awesome. You all are pretty awesome. Thank you for being here in the KevTalks
