The People, Process, & Progress Podcast - Training is Good, Practice is Better | Foundations Friday 82
Episode Date: February 3, 2023During my conversation with Chase O'Donnell, Chase mentioned she had extensive training. She also mentioned that the level of formal training she completed is not necessary for acting or comedy. Throu...ghout our conversation, Chase talked about how many times she was able to act, write jokes, and cold open shows. To me, this practical application is more valuable than the training that sets the foundation. This is what I expand on in this brief episode.*Check out Chase's comedy special on YouTube February 9, 2023 at https://youtu.be/5hGJ7x8b6ekRemember...Have a plan to keep teams alignedStay informed with facts, not fear or rumorsGet involved so you can make a difference...and GodspeedKevin

But for now, let's fly back into this episode in 3, 2, 1.
Hey everybody, welcome to Foundations Friday, 82, Training is Good, Practice is Better.
What do I mean by that?
Well, in my fun conversation with Chase O'Donnell, don't forget her special comes out on February 9th on YouTube, so check that out.
She mentioned that she had a lot of training, right?
A ton of training that involves singing, dancing, how to audition, how to cold read, stand-up comedy, all that kind of stuff, and a degree, which she is in debt for, which is great, and the training is good,
but that wasn't what made her so ready to stand up in front of folks or be in videos on Instagram.
It was really the doing and the practice, right? And so by auditioning cold or starting in front
of an audience or her mentor, Christina P., having her open the show and emcee the show and do all those things,
the actual doing of the hard things prepared her to go on her own or to better write her material and get her special ready.
And so she was comfortable.
And she started young.
And so she got those repetitions and repetitions.
And certainly while the training is helpful, she even states it's not needed.
And so I've found that too while my incident management, incident command system training was helpful.
That gives you the concepts, right?
It was the actual application of those in the field while the project management, whatever training you get, PMP, Agile, Six Sigma type stuff,
the training you get is great, but it's the being
in the meeting. It's the reading the room. It's the soft skills. It's the, oh, we don't need this.
We just can use that. It's being able to start to tease out from the menu of things to use what you
actually need to solve someone's problem. So I'm not discouraging training just like Chase didn't
discourage training, but you don't need tons of it just to have it or to think that's the gateway to be good at something. Balance getting some training
with actually doing it for real or practice, and then you'll be that much more efficient and you
can help your teams and you can lead people better. So thanks so much for coming back to
the KevTalks podcast, for listening to the previous episodes, got more great guests lined up.
I hope you're having a fantastic Friday. Have a great weekend. And remember, have a plan to keep your teams aligned. Stay informed with
facts, not fear or rumors. Get involved so you can make a difference. And I wish you all Godspeed.
