Hey everybody, welcome to Foundations Friday on the KevTalks podcast.
I am your host, Kevin Pinnell.
I hope your Friday is going really well.
Mine started with some jiu-jitsu, a little pop in my ankle that happens now and then,
and then the rest of the workday, which, you know, everything's easier after some jiu-jitsu.
So I wanted to share this Friday just kind of honestly a summary of the episode that actually came out yesterday,
so a little bit late this week for the full episode, apologies,
talking about some behaviors and expectations from effective and ineffective leaders.
And just something to think about as we go into the weekend that I've found helpful
and I've heard from other folks is to help evaluate yourself
because if I look at myself, I try and be as objective as possible and supplant my ego and
say, oh, I'm doing this well or not, but that's hard to do. So a tool that I suggest that you
all use that I've used is to get 360 degree feedback. Basically, that's like a four question
survey, make it anonymous, send it to your team,
send it to your business partners, your stakeholders, folks that aren't directly
working with you, but that have, that you've worked with before and ask them what's going
well, what should I keep doing? What am I not doing so well? What should I change?
What other feedback do you have for me? And you know, is there anything else that you would like
to see me work on or focus on
just something like that. And there's a bunch of templates and questions you can use, but
getting that 360 degree feedback, I'm asking for that a few months into being the acting program
manager for a big program and opening a new building. And I find it very helpful. And I think
instead of just doing it once a year or once a quarter or twice a year,
like some folks do as part of their overall kind of,
you know, I don't know, not quite your review,
but I think doing it during the course of a project
or program is very helpful
because then you can pivot and adjust
while you're still going
instead of maybe having to wait
after you've done a couple projects or something like that.
So try and be the most effective leader you can be.
I know I'm always working on that.
And a good way to objectively get feedback to do that is the 360-degree feedback method.
Google it.
Get a bunch of questions.
Use whatever system you have.
I use Microsoft Forms.
It's really easy.
Send it out to your people and give them a timeline too.
Hey, I'd like this in a week or two.
And then work on improvements. I'll keep working on improvements here on the podcast
really excited about some of the episodes coming up in the next couple weeks one with judd baker
who you may have heard on the jocko podcast talking about civil war leadership we talk about
what were the leadership decisions that led up to the battle of gettysburg in the civil war
really interesting to hear about some of the most famous generals that,
that, you know,
we've all heard about of Jackson and Lee and Meade and hooker and some of
these other folks. And then after that, the week following,
I get to got to talk to someone that was,
was my project management office director about how to stand up an effective
and efficient project management office.
So a great conversation with Katie McCullough. So look forward to those,
but thank you all for being here on this Friday. Remember,
have a plan, stay informed and get involved.
