Welcome to Foundations Friday number 99, what you allow in your presence, you promote.
I heard this from a great friend of mine as we worked on incident management teams together,
whether it was doing training or deploying after natural disasters or missing persons or for special events.
And it's so true. It's true in public safety. It's true in project and program management is when you're leading teams,
if you keep letting, say, a certain behavior, certain negative comments, certain, you know, lackluster performance that's causing negative impact on the team.
If you let it go over and over again, then it's like you're promoting it.
Right.
So as a leader, you have to have the confidence to correct someone.
And I'm a big advocate of praise praising public and punish, so to speak,
in private or correct in private or have those discussions not in front of everybody else.
But let's say on calls these days, someone's constantly, man, this project doesn't make sense.
Why the heck are we doing this? There's a way to correct somebody by being direct, by saying,
you know what? I hear what you're saying, but this is the direction and the vision and the
goal of this organization and this team.
And so we're going to work and do this to the best of our ability.
And then offline, as we say, one of those buzzwords these days from calls, then you can correct it more directly with that person.
You know, with, hey, I've noticed you've really, you know, been saying some negative comments about this project or about this work.
Is there anything I can do to help you?
Right. Because something's going on with that person they don't like. Maybe they don't get the why. They don't have the leader's intent. Did they know the objectives? Did they know where
they fall in the organization? Did they have the resources they need? Did they know how to
communicate or they get information right? Check those foundational five things. But if you keep
allowing it, you're promoting it. And just like I talked about earlier this week in further
professionalizing EMS to help retention, we can further professionalize our teams by not allowing
negative behaviors, poor performance to bring everybody else down and by default, then promoting
it. So thank you all for promoting this podcast. Please go to kevtalkspod.com where there's links
