Each day, on the PDB, we focus on the top critical global issues of the day, but today, I thought we'd take a different approach.

Today we're going to spotlight an influential and enigmatic figure. You like that? I used to the word enigmatic, who we talk about often on the PDB, because, well, he happens to be at the center of one of the key ongoing global issues, and that, of course, would be the war in Ukraine. Today, we focus the PDB spotlight on Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia. Welcome, and this is the first installment of what we've cleverly titled the PDB personnel files. Now, to understand Vladimir Putin, you have to understand his background as a product of the post-World War II Soviet Union. He was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad.

now known as St. Petersburg, to a modest family in a communal apartment. He attended the local schools, who was reportedly a disciplined and diligent student, although reportedly relatively quiet. Growing up in the Soviet Union during the Cold War had a significant influence on Putin's worldview. The environment of tension between the Soviet Union and the West, coupled with the Soviet emphasis on patriotism and loyalty, well, that played a crucial role in shaping his identity. As a boy, Putin had a keen interest in spy novels and movies, particularly those about Soviet intelligence officers. In particular, Putin was captivated by the tales of Stirlitz, the Soviet Union's answer to James Bond. The character was a deep cover intelligence officer who was frequently

depicted on dangerous missions in Nazi Germany. These stories of espionage and heroism fueled Putin's fascination with intelligence work and would undoubtedly help to inspire his later career choice. Putin went on to study law at Leningrad State University, where he graduated in 1975. It was during his time at university that he joined the KGB, the Soviet Union's main security agency, marking the beginning of his career in intelligence and security. Putin's work with the KGB took him to Dresden, East Germany in the 1980s, where he served as a foreign intelligence officer. Now, during his time there, his official cover was that of a translator at the Soviet-German House of Friendship, an East German organization ostensibly set up to encourage close to cooperation

between the German Democratic Republic and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. However, his primary role involved intelligence gathering, recruiting informants and espionage activities aimed at infiltrating Western institutions and gathering information on NATO. He frequently collaborated closely with the Stasi, East Germany's State Security Service, which had a vast network of informants and extensive surveillance capabilities. Putin's time in Dresden came to an end with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent collapse of East Germany. During the unrest in that year, as East Germans protested in stormed Stasi offices,

Putin reportedly faced an angry mob at the KGB headquarters in Dresden, where he reportedly famously told the crowd that his building was under the protection of Soviet forces, even though it wasn't. He was just bluffing, but his quick thinking may have saved his life. All right, up next. After the fall of East Germany, Putin returned home to Russia in 1990, just in time to witness an event that he's often referred to as a, quote, genuine tragedy, the fall of the Soviet Union. The collapse of the USSR had a profound impact on Putin. At the time, it was seen as a period of national humiliation for many Russians, who saw the once mighty superpower reduced to a state of economic and political chaos. Putin witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by ordinary Russians, including hyperinflation, unemployment, and a decline in living standards. Now, upon his return to Russia, Putin briefly worked at Leningrad State University in the

International Affairs section before transitioning into politics and working in the administration of Anatoli Subject, the main. of St. Petersburg. He eventually rose to the position of St. Petersburg's first deputy mayor. His responsibilities included promoting international investments and business ties, which were crucial for the economic development of St. Petersburg during the post-Soviet transition period. Now, pretty soon, Putin was called up to the big leagues. In 1996, he moved to Moscow to join the administration of President Boris Yeltsin. His rapid rise to the ranks culminated in his appointment as the head of the Federal Security Service, the FSB, which was the KGB's main successor

agency, and that took place in 1998. A year later, Yeltsin appointed him as prime minister, and on December 31st, 1999, Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned, naming Putin as acting president. He was elected to his first term as president of Russia in March 2000. That's 24 years ago. Now, Putin's early presidency was characterized by efforts to restore stability and national pride in post-Soviet Russia. He implemented economic reforms and stabilized the Russian economy and took a strong stance against separatist movements, most notably in Chechnya, where he presided over a bloody decade-long war against Chechen militants. Under his leadership, Russia experienced significant economic growth driven by high oil prices and market reforms. Since then, Putin's long-running tenure has been

marked by a centralization of power. He restructured the Russian political system, consolidating authority in the presidency and diminishing the power of regional governors and the parliament. This centralization has been criticized as a move towards authoritarianism, with accusations of political repression, media censorship, and the suppression of dissent. In 2008, due to term limits, Putin stepped down his president, but assumed the role of prime minister under his protege Dmitri Medvedev. During Medvedev's presidency, Putin maintained significant influence over Russian politics. And in 2012, he returned to the presidency amid widespread protests and some allegations of electoral fraud. His subsequent terms have seen a continuation of his assertive domestic and foreign

policies and authoritarian tendencies. On the international stage, Putin has been a controversial figure. He's pursued a foreign policy aimed at restoring Russia's influence on the global stage, and this has included the annexation of Crimea in 2014, military intervention in Syria, and alleged interference in foreign elections. These actions have led to, obviously, strained relations with the West and economic sanctions against Russia. Putin's leadership style is often described as pragmatic and calculating. He projects an image of strength and decisiveness, cultivating a person. personality cult through carefully managed public appearances and media portrayals.

Now, known for his intelligence and shrewd political maneuvering, he's maintained high levels of public support in Russia, despite economic challenges and international criticism. Putin's personal life is far more secretive than his public persona. He was married to Ludmila Shrebnevo from 1983 until their divorce in 2013, and they have two daughters, Maria and Katrina. Since his divorce, Putin has kept his romantic life shrouded in privacy and fueling numerous speculations and rumors. The most persistent rumor links him to Alina Kabeva, the former

Olympic gymnast, with some media outlets suggesting that they even have children together. However, both Putin and Kabeva have neither confirmed nor denied these claims with the Kremlin dismissing such reports as false. As for personal interests, Putin is at a lifelong love of judo skiing and a passion for wildlife and conservation efforts, often showcased in state media, to reinforce his action-oriented and he-man image. As the years progressed, Putin's grip on power has remained firm, marked by a blend of strategic domestic policies and assertive international maneuvers. However, his most controversial and consequential act came in February 2020, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The invasion was justified by Putin as a means to

protect Russian-speaking populations and counter NATO's eastward expansion. Putin's war has been condemned globally and has led to severe economic sanctions against Russia. Now, the invasion has not only resulted in a humanitarian crisis and widespread devastation in Ukraine, but also significantly altered the geopolitical landscape, solidifying Putin's legacy as a pivotal but polarizing figure on the world's stage. As the conflict continues, the world watches closely, obviously, uncertain of what the future holds for Putin's Russia and its place in the international order. In this segment, let's take a closer look at something a bit different about Vladimir Putin. And that would be his deep connection to the sport of judo. on the global stage. His calculated often unexpected political moves, like the annexation of Crimea, can be seen as a form of political judo, using opportunities and situations to Russia's advantage. Moreover, his judo skills have been a significant part of his public persona. He often appears in media practicing judo, reinforcing his image as a strong, disciplined leader. It's a way to connect with the Russian people, and to project an image of vigor and resilience, trades that are highly valued in Russian culture. So, while it might seem like a minor detail, Putin's dedication to judo offers a fascinating lens through which to view his leadership style and how he presents himself to the world. It's just one more piece of the puzzle in understanding

the man who has been at the helm of Russia since 2000, and again using quick maths, that's 24 years. And of course, he had the Constitution rewritten a few years ago to change the presidential term limits and now stands to remain in power until 2036.
