I'm Mike Baker. Your eyes and ears on the world stage. And yes, still obviously struggling with the flu. All right. Let's get briefed. First up, audio surfaces revealing that President Trump once told Vladimir Putin he would bomb Moscow if the Russian leader moved to invade Ukraine. Well, Putin did eventually invade Ukraine, and Moscow wasn't bombed. We'll take a look at what happened. Later in the show, six U.S. Secret Service agents have been suspended over the systemic failures related to last year's failed assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. But first, today's afternoon spotlight. A potential bombshell from President Trump has surfaced, one that could further fracture is already strained relationship with Vladimir Putin. Now,

if you're a kid or otherwise sensitive to harsh language, it's time to throw on the earmuffs. According to newly released audio from a 2024 fundraiser, Trump told a room full of donors, that he once threatened to, quote, bomb the shit out of Moscow if Putin invaded Ukraine. Here's the quote. With Putin, I said, if you go into Ukraine, I'm going to bomb the shit out of Moscow. I'm telling you I have no choice. He added that Putin only believed him 10%, but argued that the hint of unpredictability is what get Putin in check, at least for a while. So, was the Kremlin's reaction?

Well, considering their three years into their invasion of Ukraine, you could say that their reaction is somewhat dismissive. Putin's spokesman Dmitri Peskov basically denied that that phone call between Trump and Putin never happened. When asked about the call, Peskov said, quote, it's hard to say. There were no phone calls at that time. As far as I understand, we're talking about a period when Trump was not yet president of the U.S. Now, Peskov was likely referring to the days in the lead-up to the Ukraine invasion back in January and February of 2022 when President Biden was in the White House. Putin wasn't the only one. Trump claims to have issued this kind of warning to. He told donors he gave

a similar threat to Chinese President Xi Jinping, warning that any attempt to seize Taiwan would be met with a U.S. bombing campaign against Beijing. In both cases, Trump's message was the same, act aggressively, and you'll face catastrophic consequences. But both threats were allegedly made in private, behind closed doors and outside of any official diplomatic channel, raising serious questions about how real those warnings actually were. Was this a show of strength that deterred America's top adversaries or just off-the-cuff bravado designed to impress wealthy supporters? Whether the threats were actually made or not, the audio comes at a time of heightened tension between Washington and Moscow, with Trump and his cabinet's tone toward Putin, shifting dramatically

in recent days. During a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump said he was, quote, very unhappy with Putin, accusing him of throwing a lot of bullshit at the U.S. and stalling peace efforts in Ukraine. At the same time, Secretary of State Marker Rubio quietly met Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur this week on the sidelines of the Asian-Russia forum. Rubio emerged from their conversation echoing Trump's own frustrations. He expressed a shared, quote, disappointment and frustration at the lack of progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks. He described their discussion as an opportunity to share new ideas on a possible roadmap toward peace, but made clear that Moscow had shown little flexibility. Adding to the tension, Trump also announced this week that his administration would resume U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine.

That's a move long, asked for by Kiev, the one that risks promoting a sharp response from Moscow. The Kremlin has already signaled its disapproval, accusing Washington, without any irony, of course, of fueling the conflict. Well, it is a conflict because Putin invaded Ukraine. The Kremlin is basically saying, we're upset that you've stepped in and messed around with our invasion. As we approached the one-year anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Secret Service has announced some long-awaited disciplinary actions within the agency.

Earlier this week, U.S. Secret Service deputy director Matt Quinn revealed that six agents working security on that day have been suspended and placed on leave. The unpaid suspensions range from 10 to 42 days, and while Quinn said the agents will be fired, on their return, they will be placed. in roles with significantly diminished operational responsibilities. That's according to a report from the New York Post. Quinn, who first spoke to CBS News, said, quote, we are not going to fire our way out of this.

We're going to focus on the root cause and fix the deficiencies that put us in that situation, end quote. The suspensions followed a broader security and disciplinary review of the failures that allowed gunman Thomas Crooks to fire off eight shots at Trump on July 13th. of 2024. The shooter had Trump and his ear, injured two others, and tragically killed, rally attendee and firefighter, Corey Cometoria. Quinn acknowledged that, quote, Butler was an operational failure and were focused today on ensuring that it never happens again.

That's a good thing. He added, quote, Secret Service is totally accountable for Butler. But the suspensions were not without controversy. Former senior officials of the Secret Service privately criticized the move, telling the New York Times that the 10 to 42 days of unpaid leave is not a severe enough punishment for the failures that led to the shooting. Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who serves on the House Oversight Committee, echoed that criticism, saying in a statement, quote, given the shocking security failures that day, this is the absolute bare minimum. According to sources that spoke with the Times,

the suspensions also reignited deep internal frustrations at the agency, over which agents are shouldering the majority of the blame for the security lapses. While the names of the suspended agents have not been publicly released by the agency due to privacy laws, only one of the impacted agents was actually on Trump's personnel detail during the shooting. As a reminder, following the shooting, the agency came under intense scrutiny, leading to the resignation of the agency's director, Kimberly Cheedle. The scathing report from U.S. Senate investigators released last September, determined they, quote, multiple, foreseeable and preventable planning and operational failures by

Secret Service contributed to the deadly shooting. The report cited, quote, unclear roles and responsibilities, insufficient coordination with state and local law enforcement, and a lack of effective communications, end quote. Well, not to be overly critical, but I would say that anybody who was watching on that day and saw the events unfold in real time. Well, they could have said that very sense. same thing. A separate report commissioned by the Department of Homeland Security and released in October called for sweeping changes to be made within the Secret Service, warning of a, quote, culture of complacency at the agency that it compromised their ability to effectively carry out their responsibilities. On Thursday, representatives for the Secret Service said that nearly

half of the 46 congressional recommendations that it's received have already been implemented and that another 16 remain in progress. The agency has reportedly taken steps. to more clearly define their operational hierarchy, that is, who was in charge of the security mission for events like the Butler rally. Yeah, that seems to make sense. President Trump, for his part, told Fox News on Thursday that he was satisfied

with the reforms being made by the agency. While he noted that mistakes were made, he said he has, quote, great confidence in the men and women of the Secret Service, adding, quote, they had a bad day.
