First up, a new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal, what another one, for Iran, appears to have collapsed almost as soon as it arrived in Tehran. Now President Trump says he's close to deciding whether to launch what he described as a, quote, massive attack. Sounds like a band name. I'll have the details. Later in the show, the Pentagon quietly moved one of America's newest hypersonic weapons within range of China's coastline. We'll explain what the deployment could mean and what it reveals about how the U.S. is preparing for a potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific. But first, today's afternoon spotlight. For weeks now, Washington and Tekron have insisted that they remain open to negotiations. Seriously,

that's what they've been insisting. But judging by today's developments, both sides increasingly appear to believe that they may get a better deal by first escalating the conflict. That shift came into focus after a diplomatic opening briefly appeared earlier this week, but closed almost as quickly as it emerged. Reports on Thursday revealed that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi traveled to Tehran carrying what was described as a new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal, just one week after he met personally with President Trump at the White House. In Tehran, the Iraqi PM presented the offer to senior Iranian leaders, including President Massoud Boschian and Foreign Minister Abbasarachi. Now, one could argue that while those two are indeed the faces of whatever negotiations have taken

place, they are hardly the decision-makers, and that would likely be the IRGC leadership. The proposal reportedly called for another temporary ceasefire, but Iranian officials rejected it outright, arguing that it failed to resolve the central issue at the heart of the conflict, who ultimately controls the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Arakchi later dismissed the effort publicly on Iranian state TV, saying the problem wasn't a lack of communication between Washington and Tehran, but what he described is America's, quote, illogical, greedy, and controlling approach to the negotiations. So if that diplomatic effort by Iraq represented an off-ramp of sorts, it proved to be a short-lived one, though that's hardly surprising, given the current trajectory

of the conflict. As we've been tracking, the past week of fighting has seen increased Iranian strikes against American military and intelligence bases, the deaths of four American service members, and the expansion of Iran's proxy war into the Red Sea through the Houtis. Within hours on Thursday, President Trump revealed he's actively considering what he described as a, quote, massive attack against Iran, one he said would be. be, quote, bigger than anything we have ever had before, end quote. Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command announced a 13th consecutive night of strikes against Iranian military targets. Now, it's worth noting this latest round differed somewhat from the previous 12 nights of strikes.

According to Reuters, American missiles, struck targets stretching from Iran's southern coastline all the way to the country's Caspian Sea region in the north, including reported strikes against facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. That's a notable geographic expansion for the renewed campaign, which has largely focused on southern Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, and the regime's maritime capabilities. Iran, as it has been doing, responded in kind. State media reported attacks against American military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and northern Iraq, while the Revolutionary Guard warned civilians across Gulf states to stay away from locations allegedly being used by U.S. military personnel. At the same time, the regime broadened

its warnings beyond the region. After Britain reaffirmed that U.S. forces could continue using British military bases for defensive operations, Iranian officials accused London of becoming a, quote, accomplice to the U.S., and warned that any country facilitating American military action could face consequences. While these developments might just look like another day in an increasingly familiar cycle of strikes and counterstrikes, the expanded target list, continued Iranian intransigence, and Washington's vow to hold Iran directly responsible for any Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, point to something more significant. The reported ceasefire proposal makes clear that diplomatic channels have not disappeared entirely, although you can barely see them. But the almost immediate

rejection of that offer, followed by President Trump's public consideration of a much larger military operation and then expanding campaign on both sides, suggests neither Washington nor Tehran believes that now is the moment to compromise. Welcome back to the PDB afternoon bulletin. One of the more important military developments this week didn't involve Iran or Ukraine and flew largely under the mainstream media's radar. Instead, it came in the form of a handful of recently released Pentagon photographs that quietly revealed something significant about how the U.S. military is preparing for the possibility

of a future conflict with China. The images confirmed that the U.S. Army deployed its new Dark Eagle hypersonic missile system to Guam during last month's Valiant Shield exercise. The first publicly confirmed deployment of that weapon to the strategically important U.S. territory in the Western Pacific. While the deployment itself occurred during the exercise in June, the Defense Department only released the images this week, offering the clearest public confirmation yet that one of America's newest long-range strike weapons was positioned within range of China's coastline. It's a major milestone for the U.S. Army, as Dark Eagle marks the arrival of an entirely new capability. As a reminder, unlike traditional ballistic missiles, hypersonic glide weapons travel at more than five times the speed of sound

while remaining highly maneuverable throughout flight, making them far more. more difficult, of course, for existing air and missile defense systems to track and intercept. But Dark Eagle's real breakthrough is the reach that it gives the Army. Designed to strike high-value, heavily defended targets more than 1,700 miles away, it would give ground forces their first mobile, non-nuclear, long-range strike capability with the range to hit strategic targets far beyond the immediate battlefield. That means commanders would no longer have to rely exclusively on aircraft, warships, or submarines to reach certain heavily defended targets, an increasingly important advantage against an adversary

whose air defenses are specifically designed to keep American forces at a distance. But the missile itself is only part of the story. The more significant development may be where it was deployed. Guam has long served as one of the Pentagon's most important logistics hubs in the Indo-Pacific, hosting major naval facilities and Anderson Air Force Base. In any future conflict involving Taiwan or the South China Sea, the island would almost certainly become a critical staging area for American air and naval operations. Now, it appears the Benegon increasingly envisions Guam as something more than just a rear-area support base. For Guam, Dark Eagles' reported range places portions of China's coastline on the east within reach. That's significant, given the challenge posed by

China's so-called anti-access and area denial, or A2AD strategy. For you, years, Beijing has invested heavily in long-range missiles, integrated air defenses and surveillance systems designed to keep American forces far from China's shores during any conflict. The Pentagon's response is increasingly focused on fielding mobile, land-based missile systems capable of surviving inside that contested environment. The Dark Eagle is the latest example of that broader shift. It's also worth noting that this doesn't necessarily mean that the system remains permanently stationed on Guam. Pentagon officials have not said whether the launcher stayed behind after Valiant Shield concluded, and the Army's hypersonic program does continue to face production delays as additional batteries are built.

Even so, the deployment marks an important moment. As we discussed earlier on the PDB, this week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a point of reassuring America's allies while attending a security forum in the Philippines that Washington remains committed to the Indo-Pacific region, despite ongoing wars in the Middle East. and support for Ukraine. The deployment of Dark Eagle complements that diplomatic message. Together, they offer a clearer picture of how the Trump administration is approaching strategic competition with China, reassure allies, strengthen deterrence, and continue shifting more advanced military capabilities into the region.
