I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage. All right, let's get briefed. First up, news out of Texas, but not related to the tragic 4th of July weekend flooding. Nearly a dozen anti-ice rioters were arrested on July 4th for staging a violent ambush on an ice detention facility with the intent to kill federal officers. The incident comes as assaults on ice agents nationwide surge by 700%. Later in the show, President Trump appears to have lost all patience with Russian leader Vladimir Putin telling reporters Monday evening that the U.S. will be restarting arms shipments to Ukraine to help defend

against the Kremlin's ongoing aggression. But first, today's afternoon spotlight. As anti-ice rhetoric intensifies across the country amid the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, violent attacks on migrant facilities and federal agents are surging. State and federal officials revealed Monday that they thwarted a terrorist attack on an ICE detention center in Alvarado, Texas on the 4th of July. As the nation celebrated Independence Day, nearly a dozen individuals descended on the Prairieland detention facility engaging in what officials called a, quote, planned ambush with the intent to kill ICE corrections officers, according to our report from ABC News. The attackers, dressed in black military-style clothing, arrived at the site just before 11 p.m., and began shooting fireworks at the building and engaging in other acts of vandalism. But the situation took a more violent turn as local police officers arrived on the scene.

One of the individuals, armed with a gun, shot a responding officer in the neck, another open fire on the detention facility, firing 20 to 30 rounds at federal corrections officers before fleeing with the rest of the assailants. But they did not get far. Authorities said they were able to quickly apprehend the perpetrators of the attack, arresting all ten, and charging them with attempted murder of a federal officer. The officer that was shot is expected to make a full recovery, and no one else was injured in the attack.

But given the suspected plans of the attackers, the incident could have easily turned deadly. At a press conference on Monday, authorities said one of the suspects that fled the scene was captured carrying a large magazine clip and Kevlar vests. He told officers that he had met some people online. Oh, that's nice, who wanted to, quote, make a little noise at the detention center. In total, authorities seized 12 sets of body armor, fireworks, weapons, and cell phones during several searches executed over the weekend. They also found two AR-15s nearby the facility, which the suspects likely ditched as they fled the scene. Additionally, officials seized a flag saying, quote, resist fascism, fight oligarchy. Oh, that's very original, and flyers saying fight ice terror with class war free all political prisoners. End quote. The U.S. Attorney's Office has charged all 10 individuals with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer, as well as three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. Now, this was not an isolated incident. On Monday morning, a 27-year-old man,

carrying a rifle in tactical gear, opened fire on a Border Patrol facility in McCallon, Texas, that's near the U.S.-Mexico border. The suspect fired several dozen rounds at the Border Patrol building and agents inside, before agents returned fire, killing him. A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said that two McCallan police officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured during the attack. All three were taken to a local hospital where they're being treated for their wounds. Officials later said they are all expected to make a full recovery.

The shooter was linked to an address in Michigan. and official motive has not yet been released, and officials with the FBI said the investigation remains ongoing. But inside the shooter's vehicle, investigators found another rifle, ammunition, and what they described as other assaultive weapons. The shooter had also spray-painted the Latin phrase, Cordes die on the driver's side door, which translates to Day of the Heart. Officials said the phrase is popular with players of the video game Call of Duty, Black Ops 2, where Cordes die as a revolutionary movement that seeks to topple capitalist governments. Following the shooting, U.S. Borders'R. Tom Holman criticized Democrat lawmakers

for their increasingly extreme rhetoric aimed at ICE agents. He pointed to recent remarks by Congresswoman Pramala Jayapal, who called ICE a, quote, terrorist force, and House Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries, who likened ICE to the Gestapo, the Nazi's secret police, of course. Hohben said Monday, quote, unless we stop hateful rhetoric against ICE, border patrol, comparing them to Nazis, there's going to be more loss of life. They're simply enforcing laws that Congress enacted, end quote.

Nationwide, violence against federal immigration officers has dramatically surged, according to our report from USA Today. According to the White House, there's been a roughly 700% increase across the country in violent assaults on federal immigration agents working to carry out their duties. Just days after a reportedly fruitless phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, President Trump confirmed late Monday night that the U.S. is restarting arms shipments to Ukraine. Speaking from the White House during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister

Netanyahu, Trump told reporters that Kiev is, quote, getting hit very hard, who are going to have to send more weapons. The remarks of the clearest acknowledgement, yet that Trump is all but done believing that negotiations alone can compel Russia to back down. The shift follows a tense stretch during which the Pentagon last month halted deliveries of Patriot Interceptors, A. 120 missiles, Stinger defense missiles, and other critical munitions, blindsiding officials in Kiev, and alarming some inside Trump's own national security circle. The freeze, as we've reported here on the BDP, was designed to review U.S. stockpiles following the strikes on the Houthis in Yemen earlier this year, and the June strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Now, well, that pause appears to be over. Pentagon spokesman Sean Barnel confirmed the reversal in a statement saying, quote, at President Trump's direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace, end quote. As we discussed this week, Trump relayed a similar message to Ukrainian President Zelensky, during a phone call on Friday. According to AIDS familiar with the conversation,

Trump reassured Keev that the delay was temporary and not a pivot away from Ukraine altogether. He pledged to send, quote, as much military aid as we can spare. Zelensky, who has spent the past few months sounding the alarm over dwindling air defenses, struck an optimistic tone after that call. He said in a national address,

quote, this was probably the best conversation in all this time, adding, quote, I'm grateful for the readiness to help. But the resumption of aid was also shaped by a far more strained exchange between Trump and Putin. Speaking afterward, Trump described the call as, quote, very disappointing, telling reporters he pressed Putin to end the war, but made little headway. Just hours later, Russia launched what officials in Kiev, say, was its largest aerial assault of the war, targeting Kiev in multiple cities in a coordinated seven-hour barrage.

while Ukraine's air defenses intercepted many of the drones and missiles, several struck civilian infrastructure. The attack underscored Ukraine's desperate need for advanced air defense systems, particularly Patriot batteries, which have become the backbone of Keeves' ability to fend off Russian missiles. Sources familiar with internal deliberations report that the National Security Council convened today to finalize the latest arms package. The meeting caps off weeks of debate inside the administration over how far to go in resupplying Ukraine without triggering further Russian aggression. The details of the arms package should remain unclear. Since the 2022 invasion, Washington has delivered nearly $67 billion in military aid to Ukraine. That's according to March 2025 State Department

Fact sheet. The last major package was approved in December under the Biden administration. Upon taking office in January, Trump has allowed most of those shipments to, to continue, though with sporadic delays tied to foreign policy recalibrations. Trump's decision to reopen the weapons pipeline suggests he sees no near-term diplomatic off-ramp and recognizes that withholding aid might only deepen Ukraine's vulnerability and further emboldened Putin.
