It's Wednesday, November 29th.
Welcome to the PDB afternoon bulletin.
I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage.
Let's get briefed.
We'll kick things off with an update on the outbreak of the mysterious fours
of pneumonia, currently creating havoc in Chinese hospitals and similar infections now breaking
out in parts of Europe.
Later, we'll return to our coverage of the migrant crisis at Finland's border with Russia,
which has forced the country to shudder their last remaining border crossing amid rising tensions
with the Putin regime.
But first, our afternoon spotlight.
Earlier this week, we reported on the dramatic surge in an unidentified respiratory
illness, primarily impacting children that appears to be spreading throughout China.
The symptoms include fever, lung inflammation, without a cough, and pulmonary nodules or
lumps on the lungs.
As of now, no deaths have been reported.
Now, a similar pattern appears to be emerging in parts of Europe.
In the Netherlands, in particular, a dramatic spike in pneumonia cases has been observed,
particularly among children aged 5 to 15.
where 80 out of every 100,000 were treated for the illness.
Even younger children, aged 4 and under, are seeing a similar rise with cases jumping in recent days.
Now, this marks the most substantial pneumonia outbreak that the Netherlands has seen in recent years.
The link between the health crisis in Europe and the mysterious respiratory illness in China remains unclear.
The World Health Organization and Chinese authorities maintain that the
The uptick in China is due to children contracting known viruses like the flu, rhinoviruses,
RSV, and adenovirus.
That combined with the fact that this is China's first flu season since it lifted its draconian
COVID measures, so the population may be working with weakened immune systems.
In the Netherlands, however, this explanation seems less likely.
While COVID-era measures were still in place as recently as 2022, they had been in place as recently as 2020,
have since been lifted, and researchers in the country are currently unable to explain the spike.
Now, while this might not be a virus, as China and the WHO maintain, some experts suspect an antibiotic
resistant strain of a bacterial infection called mycoplasma pneumonia, or MPP for short. However,
and this will shock you, China's lack of communication on the issue is preventing an accurate
diagnosis. Meanwhile, the outbreak among children in China shows no signs of slowing down. Hospitals in
major Chinese cities, including Beijing, continue to overflow with young patients. According to reports,
some hospitals have even set up special homework zones for children battling these respiratory
illnesses. Images and videos of children doing homework while receiving intravenous drips in the hospital
were widely shared on social media and on Chinese state television.
Now, not to beat a dead horse, but I'm about to.
At what point will the U.S. administration, allies, the U.N., and others, demand that China act like a member of this planet
with some interest in the common good and provide transparency around this and future health concerns and outbreaks?
Look, we still lack a clear understanding of the origins of COVID-19 because she's regime hides, destroys, or misrepresents scientific data from the rest of the world.
And they'll continue behaving that way as long as the WHO, NIH, and other world health agencies fail to insist that the CCP act responsibly.
Okay, coming up after the break, Finland is set to close its last remaining border crossing with Russia.
amid concerns that Moscow is using migrants as part of hybrid warfare to destabilize the country.
I'll be right back.

Welcome back to the afternoon bulletin.
We return to our coverage of the migrant crisis brewing on Finland's border with Russia,
which Finnish leaders say has been orchestrated by the Putin regime
to overwhelm their resources and undermine security in the country.
Finland announced Tuesday that they will be closing their last remaining border crossing with Russia,
for at least two weeks, beginning on Friday.
As we discussed last week on the PDB,
the recent surge of migrants had already prompted Finland
to close seven of their eight border crossings with Russia.
Now, officials in Russia called the decision irrational
and said, ominously, that Finnish citizens will suffer as a result.
The situation has continued to intensify.
Roughly 900 migrants from the Middle East and Africa
have attempted to cross the border without,
proper visas and documentation in November. Now, that's a surge from fewer than one a day
over the previous months. Finland has been raising concerns for weeks, calling it a retaliatory
hybrid operation by Russia, meant to punish Finland for joining the NATO alliance last April.
A colonel in the Finnish border guard slammed Russia over the crisis, saying it's a,
quote, cruel way of handling human beings, particularly due to the harsh winter conditions.
Now, adding a new wrinkle to the already tense situation, on Tuesday evening Polish officials
offered to send military advisors to aid Finland, citing an official request for Allied support.
Finnish officials, for their part, said they were not aware of the offer from Poland
and made no such request.
Now, despite Finland's confusion, the possibility of a troop buildup irritated leaders in Russia,
who responded Wednesday by threatening Finland.
Kremlin's spokesman Dmitri Beskov warned that any troop built up on the border would be unprovoked and unjustified,
and seen by the Putin regime as a direct threat to Russian security.
Finland's border with Russia stretches 830 miles and strategically serves as NATO's northeastern flank.
Finnish officials opted to abandon their decades-long tradition of non-alignment
and joined NATO in April after seeing Russia's aggression toward Ukraine.
The Putin regime condemned the action and promised to retaliate with countermeasures.
Now, one of the fascinating consequences of Putin's decision to invade Ukraine is that by doing so,
he's inadvertently grown and strengthened NATO.
His original calculation prior to the invasion appeared to be that marching his troops
further into Ukraine would splinter and weaken NATO.
undoubtedly, he imagined that by weakening NATO, he could then ultimately make further moves and territorial gains
to fulfill his dream of somehow rebuilding the former Soviet Union.
