I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage. Let's get briefed. First, we'll have the latest updates from Donald Trump's historic victory in last night's presidential election and how world leaders are reacting to his return to the global stage.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Then we bring you a story straight out of science fiction, as Chinese scientists claim to have made a breakthrough on an advanced energy beam weapon dubbed a real-life death star. Oh, good. That's what 2024 was missing. The death star. But first, our afternoon spotlight. The dust is beginning to settle following Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in what was one of the most contentious and memorable U.S. presidential elections in recent history. While some votes are still being tallied in Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada, the results suggest Trump won not by the slim margins predicted by pollsters, but in a relative landslide, also securing the popular vote by some three percentage points. Now, slated to become the 47th. the president of the United States, Trump is now just the second candidate in U.S. history to win non-consecutive White House terms, the other being, as we all know, Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s, remember him? And here's a little known fact. Social media played almost no role in either of Grover's presidential campaigns, although his TikTok dances were reportedly legendary. A jubilant Trump addressed his supporters in a speech early Wednesday morning after crossing the 270.
Starting point is 00:02:38 electoral threshold, calling his campaign the, quote, greatest political movement of all time, and vowing to usher in a, quote, golden age of America. President-elect Trump promised swift change on everything from immigration to the economy, declaring, quote, America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate, end quote. Well, it's hard to disagree with that. Aside from the presidency, Republicans managed to win key down ballot races across the country, taking control of the Senate from the Democrat. Now, control of the Senate will ensure smooth sailing for Trump as he takes office regarding his choices for key cabinet posts and other critical appointments.
Starting point is 00:03:18 While the final outcome regarding the House of Representatives remains unclear, with results still being tallied, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday that the data suggests Republicans will hang on to control of the chamber. If his prediction holds, Republicans are poised to have a unified government across the executive and legislative branches, as Trump enters office in January. We should note that Vice President Harris was conspicuously silent in the aftermath of the media calling the race for Trump. Harris chose not to speak to her supporters last night and waited until late afternoon today to make a public address. According to reports, Harris called Trump in the early afternoon to concede. As for a concession speech, Harris did address the nation in the 4 p.m. hour from her alma mater, Howard University. President Biden also reportedly plans to call Trump on Wednesday to discuss his victory.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Okay, hands up if you'd love to be listening in on that conversation. Meanwhile, reactions are pouring in from around the world. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was easily the most effusive in his praise, which can perhaps be read as a commentary on his relationship with the Biden administration regarding the war in Gaza and Lebanon. Netanyahu said, quote, congratulations on history's greatest comeback, your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America
Starting point is 00:04:41 and a powerful recommitment to the Great Alliance between Israel and America, end quote. The UK's Kirstarmer, Francis Emmanuel Macron, Poland's Donald Tusk, and many other Western European leaders were slightly more muted in their congratulatory messages, but spoke optimistically about their hopes for ongoing cooperation and the importance of America's strategic partnerships in Europe,
Starting point is 00:05:05 particularly regarding NATO. countless well-wishes also poured in from all corners of the world, including India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico to name just a few. China, meanwhile, which could soon face an onslaught of tariffs from Trump, has been largely quiet on America's political sea change. Officials in Russia are also reacting cautiously, with a spokesman for the Kremlin saying the U.S. was still a, quote, unfriendly country, and that only time would tell if Trump was serious about ending the war in Ukraine. Speaking of Ukraine, one of the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his victory was President Zelensky, who called it, quote, impressive, and spoke of a recent meeting that he had with Trump, where they discussed, quote, ways to put an end to Russian aggression. Now, many eyes were on Ukraine's reaction, given Vladimir Putin's
Starting point is 00:05:55 ongoing war in the country, of course, and Trump's rhetoric that he can swiftly end the conflict, something that critics fear will play into the hands of Putin. Zelensky has been critical of the scale of Western support for the war, and there are concerns that Trump could curtail this aid and pressure NATO to limit their involvement. Although it's worth noting that it was the Trump administration back in 2018 that actually authorized the sale of lethal aid, including javelin systems and anti-armor missiles, to Ukraine, aid that had previously been refused by the Obama-Biden administration following Russia's move into Crimea back in 2014. Zelenskyy said he had Myers Trump's, quote, commitment to the peace through strength approach in global affairs.
Starting point is 00:06:41 He added, quote, this is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together, end quote. Coming up, we turn to China, where scientists have allegedly made a breakthrough on an advanced energy beam weapon dubbed a real-life death star. They're calling it the Alan Parsons Project. It's a laser beam. All right, I'm sorry. Apologies to Austin Powers. I'll be right back.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Not loving your AT&T or T Mobile Bill. Yeah, we've been hearing that a lot. Good news. Bring your AT&T or T Mobile Bill to Verizon and we'll give you a better deal. So get away from that unfortunate phone bill and get to Verizon. Run, ride, canoe. Whatever it takes, we'll be here. Bring your AT&T or T Mobile bill to a Verizon store today

Starting point is 00:07:47 I want to turn your attention to China, where scientists have reportedly achieved a significant breakthrough in advanced energy weapon technology. The breakthrough allegedly involves synchronizing electromagnetic waves into one powerful laser capable of targeting and disrupting satellite systems and has a has been likened to a real-life death star weapon from Star Wars. China's interest in advanced energy weapons is not new. In recent times, China's government has heavily invested in brain-disrupting weapons, reportedly designed to affect cognitive functions in military and government officials.
Starting point is 00:08:24 The communist government also previously produced a prototype laser rifle, capable of incinerating targets from half a mile away. As reported by the South China Morning Post, The technical leap comes from, quote, ultra-high time-precision synchronization. Ah, I thought it was something like that. Now, for those of you not familiar with ultra-high time-precision synchronization, well, it's a feat that allows smaller laser beams to merge with precision that even exceeds the accuracy of atomic clocks.
Starting point is 00:08:56 This ultra-precision means that multiple beams can hit a single point at exactly the same time, creating a force that's far greater than the sum of its part. that's according to the independent. Chinese researchers achieved this level of precision by using optical fibers to synchronize individual energy beams with extraordinary accuracy. Are you with me on this still? Scientists report the time separation between the beams can't exceed a trillionth of a second for the weapon to function correctly.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Notably, the communist government's ambitious plans for this weapon aren't intended for traditional land or naval combat. Rather, it's optimized for space operations, particularly international satellite infrastructure. According to the South China Morning Post, the beam can reliably deliver focused energy used to impair communications, navigation, and even missile guidance systems. Now, this capability obviously adds a potent new dimension to China's arsenal and reflects a strategic emphasis on space-based warfare. China's foray into directed energy weapons, including laser and microwave systems, indicates a long-term vision that includes capabilities often seen in science fiction. The communist government has moved swiftly
Starting point is 00:10:12 from prototyping to testing and now to operationalizing these technologies for real-world applications. As China continues its research and development in this area, the implications for global security and military dynamics are, of course, profound. This Death Star-style weapon may not destroy planets, but its potential to disable critical satellite systems, places it at the cutting edge of military innovation.
