Welcome to the PDB afternoon bulletin.
I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage. All right, let's get briefed.
First up, the FBI arrests two men in Utah after a live bomb is found under a new station's vehicle
in Salt Lake City. What is up with Utah? I'll have the details. Later in the show, President
Trump says Memphis is next. That would be Memphis Tennessee. The National Guard may be on its
way to one of America's most violent cities as early as this week. But first, today's afternoon
spot. We start today with a failed blast in Salt Lake City, where a bomb planted under a local
news truck fizzled before it could detonate, leading to the arrest of two men, now suspected in a
federal terrorism case. Police confirm the device had been planted under a Fox 13 news vehicle
parked outside a building on Friday. The bomb had been lit, leading to its discovery, but
malfunctioned, allowing city police and the state's unified fire authority bomb squads,
to secure the scene before the FBI stepped in.
I know I don't mean to make light of a serious situation,
but the bomb had been lit?
What are we?
In the 1800s?
Within 24 hours, federal agents trace the device to a home in Magna, Utah,
just a short drive from Utah Valley University,
where, of course, conservative commentator Charlie Kirk
was assassinated just days earlier.
According to the affidavit of probable cause,
investigators executed a search warrant at the residence on Saturday, and the suspects were identified
as 58-year-old Adib Nassir and 31-year-old Adil Justice Ahmed Nassir.
While federal agents executed the search warrant, they discovered two additional, quote,
hoax weapons of mass destruction, oh, that the men insisted were real, triggering the evacuation of
nearby homes. Firearms, narcotics, and electronic devices believed to hold further evidence
were also seized. Prosecutors said both men were barred from owning firearms due to previous
narcotics use, while Adib was further restricted by a protective order, while these two sounds swell.
Jail records list Adib as a Pakistani national with multiple aliases, while a deal is recorded
as a U.S.-born resident of Utah. Authorities have yet to clarify whether the two men are related.
Utah Unified Fire Authority officer Jeffrey Nelson labeled the two men as a, quote,
danger to the community and a flight risk if released. The judge agreed, denying them bail after
they were booked into Salt Lake City County Jail on Sunday. Both men now face charges of possessing
an incendiary device, threat of terrorism, and possession of weapons of mass destruction. More charges
could follow as authorities combed the electronic devices seized during the search warrant. What remains
unclear as a motive or whether the Fox 13 vehicle was deliberately targeted. Still, the timing is
striking as the device was planted just as national media converged on Utah to cover the aftermath of
Kirk's killing some 40 miles away. The Fox 13 station manager said staff were fully cooperating
with law enforcement. As of now, federal authorities insist that Kirk assassination and this
bomb case are separate investigations. But taken together, they underscored a bizarre reality
that in less than a week, Utah has become a flashboy in for political violence and threats on the lives of journalists.
Coming up next, the Trump says Memphis is next in line for his federal crackdown on crime.
The National Guard could hit the streets there within days.
I'll be right back.

The spring-loaded weights on each end send shockwaves of energy throughout your whole upper body,
forcing your muscles to contract up to 240 times per minute.
Beginners can tone and tighten their arms and shoulders and chest.
Lifters can prime their upper bodies in between sets and get that final burn,
while athletes can sharpen their reaction times and build explosive power for that competitive edge.
The shake weight is no joke.
It's serious training, seriously, made simple.

afternoon bulletin. President Trump is setting his sights on Memphis, Tennessee as the next city to
receive National Guard assistance in the federal effort to crack down on crime. The president made the
announcement in a Friday morning interview calling Memphis, quote, deeply troubled and pledging to,
quote, fix that just like we did Washington. While details are still being finalized, troops could
arrive in the city as soon as this week. This deployment would mark the first time that the administration
has moved to send the guard into a Republican-led state. Trump had previously considered sending
forces into Chicago, but pulled back after advisors warned of legal complications without approval
from Illinois Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker, who seems just fine with the level of crime
in Chicago. In Tennessee, however, Republican Governor Bill Lee has openly welcomed the plan,
telling reporters he's been in touch with the White House to coordinate. Local leaders in Memphis
have responded more cautiously. Mayor Paul Young, a Democrat, said the televised interview was the
first definitive confirmation he'd received of the decision. Young admitted he was, quote,
certainly not happy about the guard's potential arrival, but has been in conversations with the
governor's office about ways to address crime through federal law enforcement agencies, such as the
FBI, DEA, and ATF. He said he expects more clarity this week on how many troops will be sent and what their
duties will be. Possibilities include traffic control at large events, operating surveillance systems,
and neighborhood support initiatives. Memphis ranks among the most dangerous cities in America,
and in many crime categories it's leading the nation. Well, well done Memphis. In 2024,
the city posted the highest violent crime rate, the highest property crime rate, and the third
highest murder rate in America. Look at those winners. Overall, crime there runs more than three
times the national average. Federal officials say those numbers tell the story. Whatever the short-term
dips may be, the level of violence and repeat offenses is still off the charts. And that's why the
guard is coming. That's why federal resources are being offered. A White House statement described
the action as part of an aggressive effort to dismantle, quote, rampant violent crime fueled by failed
Democrat governance in major cities. It cited cases tied to Shelby County's revised bail system,
alleging that repeat offenders were too often released without bond.
Now, not everyone in Memphis is on board.
Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris called the deployment a threat to democracy.
Oh, look, there goes another threat to democracy.
And some city council members have urged the state to pursue more funding for violence,
prevention programs, instead of relying on military support.
Well, how about you don't defund the police?
Community concerns also remain sensitive,
as the last time that the National Guard was deployed to Memphis
was back in 1968,
following the assassination, of course, of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
For now, Memphis is waiting to see just how many guard troops arrive,
what they'll be tasked with,
and whether their presence will make a dent in a city
that's been battling crime for decades.
And that, my friends, is the PDB afternoon bulletin

Hey, Mike Baker here.
Now, let me take a minute to talk about personal finances and debt.
I know, that's just about everybody's favorite subject.
So I'm sure you've noticed, look, the cost of everything still seems a bit out of control, right?
Grocery bills and utility bills, gas bills, and you know what I'm talking about.
And many folks are relying on credit cards to cover some of those essentials.
If that debt is piling up for you, well, you're not alone.
Americans collectively owe over $1 trillion in credit card debt.
So by now, well, maybe you've considered reaching out to my friends at American financing,
but you hesitated because you don't want to give up your low mortgage rate.
Well, there's good news.
They've created what they call the smart equity loan.
It's a solution designed to help you take control of your finances without touching your current mortgage.
Unlike a helock, which can have varied interest rates,
the smart equity loan offers a fixed rate.
That means one predictable monthly payment, giving you peace of mind.
This loan allows you to leverage the equity in your home to pay off high interest debt,
free up your cash flow, and keep your existing low mortgage rate intact.
It only takes 10 minutes to get started with no upfront or hidden fees,
and that's very important.
