It's Wednesday, the 3rd of September. Welcome to the PDB afternoon bulletin.
I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage.
All right, let's get briefed.
First up, Maduro's regime in Venezuela lashes out
after the U.S. military targeted and destroyed a Venezuelan cartel boat.
We'll have those details.
Later in the show, a surprise guest shows up at China's big military parade,
the rarely seen daughter of Kim Jong-un, leading some to speculate,
and she's being groomed to become the first female leader of North Korea.
But first, today's afternoon spotlight, America's buildup in their Caribbean has officially gone
kinetic, and as you can imagine, the Maduro regime, well, they're not too pleased with the initial
results. The first, the U.S. military says it carried out a strike against a Venezuela and
drug-smuggling vessel, killing 11 traffickers linked to one of the hemisphere's most violent
criminal organizations, that would be the Tren de Aragua cartel or TDA. President Trump announced
the strike on Tuesday and released a declassified vision.
video of the attack shortly after. In the grainy clip, you see what's called a go-fast boat,
long, narrow, and armed with several oversized outboard motors, cutting across the open water
at high speed. Then the vessel is engulfed in flame and disappears in a cloud of smoke and fire.
For anyone doubting the message of the strike, Trump hammered at home on social media. He wrote,
quote, please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the
United States of America. Beware, he had that in all capitals. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
And then he followed that with 11 exclamation points, just in case you didn't think he was serious.
Anytime you see 11 exclamation points, you know that the fellow means business.
Secretary of Stade Marker Rubio echoed Trump's message, albeit without the exclamation points,
describing the incident as a, quote, lethal strike against a designated narco-terrorist organization.
Pentagon officials confirmed that the target was a vessel operated by TDA, the Venezuelan gang that Trump earlier this year labeled a foreign terrorist organization.
It's the first time the U.S. has acknowledged a direct military strike against drug cartels in Latin America.
And that distinction matters.
For decades, the job of interdicting drug boats has fallen to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Their procedures have been cautious.
Board the vessel, demands surrender, fire warning shots if necessary, may be.
disable the engines, the focus is on preserving life while seizing the drugs and arresting
traffickers. A former U.S. ambassador familiar with those operations said bluntly, we don't just
shoot up boats, end quote, well, yes, actually we do now. But under Trump's new policy,
that's exactly what happened. No surrender, no boarding, just a strike to destroy the vessel.
This is the clearest sign yet of the U.S. administration's expanded strategy. In January,
Trump signed an executive order, designated Latin American cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
That designation unlocked new authorities for the Pentagon, allowing the U.S. military to do more
than just support Coast Guard operations. In February, TDA was formally labeled a terrorist group.
By July, the Treasury Department had also sanctioned another Venezuelan network known as the Cartel de la Soles,
allegedly run by President Nicholas Maduro himself and his senior military.
officers for facilitating cocaine shipments in cooperation with TDA and Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.
So yesterday's strike wasn't just some one-off interdiction. It was the logical next step in a
broader shift from law enforcement to military engagement. Predictably, Maduro's regime is
acting aggrieved. Maduro's communications minister, though, claimed the video was fake,
suggesting it was generated by artificial intelligence. Maduro himself has been on
TV recently, warning the U.S. against further escalation. He accused Secretary Rubio of leading Trump
down the path of war and promised that if Venezuela were attacked, the country would, quote,
immediately pass to a period of armed struggle in defense of national territory, end quote.
He called the current U.S. buildup, the biggest threat that the continent has seen in a century.
Well, actually, the biggest threat that the continent has seen in the last century has come from the
cartels and the death and corruption and violence that they've created. Rubio said in Miami that the
president intends to use, quote, the full power of America, the whole might of the U.S., to eradicate
drug cartels wherever they operate. This marks a fundamental change, and now America fights the drug
trade. Instead of treating traffickers as criminals to be arrested and prosecuted, Washington is now
treating them as terrorists, legitimate military targets. That means the U.S. is not only hunting terrorists in
the Middle Eastern Africa, but now also in the Caribbean and Latin America.
All right, coming up next.
Kim Jong-un brings his daughter to China's military parade.
Oh, it was Bring Your Kid to Work Day, sparking speculation she's being groomed as North
Korea's next ruler.
I'll be right back.

Now, when you hear about inflation worries, or maybe when you hear that the national debt in the U.S. is some $37 trillion,

Welcome back to the PDB afternoon bulletin.
The fourth generation of the Kim Dynasty has just made her debut on the world stage.
The Kim Dynasty started back in 1948, of course, with North Korean founder Kim Il-sung.
Then, of course, well, you had his boy Kim Jong-il, who, passed.
leadership onto his son, the current despot, Kim Jong-un. And now, it appears that Kim Jong-un's
daughter, Jouet, may be next in line. She appeared in Beijing yesterday, prompting speculation
she's being groomed as the regime's first female ruler. Photos released by state media
showed Juei stepping off her father's armored train in the Chinese capital greeted by
Communist Party officials ahead of President Xi Jinping's big victory day parade today. Standing just
behind Kim, the smiling school-age girl's presence underscored her growing prominence inside the regime,
cast as the bell of the ball, at an event that is arranged and has been arranged as she's
showpiece to mark Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. Now, Juey's prominence
has not come overnight. Since her first appearance in 2022 at an intercontinental ballistic missile
launch inside the regime, and frankly, what girl doesn't love a good missile launch, Jouet has been
steadily elevated. Within months, she was standing alongside generals at a parade, marking the
army's founding anniversary. It wasn't long before state media began referring to her as Kim's
quote, respected daughter, a title that all but confirmed her assent within the family's inner circle.
From parades and missile tests to the opening of a seaside resort, she's become a fixture at her
father's side. Most recently in May, she appeared at a war anniversary at the Russian embassy in Pyongyang,
in appearance seen as a deliberate step into political and diplomatic spaces.
Her identity, of course, was hinted at long before now.
Former NBA star Dennis Rodman, who bizarrely is a longtime friend of Kim's,
claimed to have held Kim's infant daughter during a 2013 trip to Pyongyang.
I will mention, though, because it's important, that Rodman was an elite rebounder and defensive player,
wacky, to be sure, but that dude could play.
South Korea's intelligence service later reported that Kim and his wife have three children, a son born in 2010, a daughter in 2013 believed to be Juei, and a third child in 2017 of an unknown gender. In 2024, Seoul's spy agency openly assessed that Juei was being groomed for succession. Her rise has unfolded alongside Kim's powerful sister, Kim Yo-Zong, long considered a central player in the regime's inner workings. Analysts argue that Juehueh is growing viscous.
ability is deliberate. Kim is positioning her, not just for the elite at home, but for an international
audience. A North Korean leadership expert from the U.S.-based think tank Stimpsen Center,
put it bluntly, quote, right now, Juei is the frontrunner as the next Supreme Leader of North
Korea. She's getting practical protocol experience, which should serve her well, end quote.
The international exposure marks a departure from family precedent. Kim Jong-il, Kim's father,
or famously refused foreign travel and never presented Kim Jong-un abroad before his succession.
By contrast, Chouye's appearance at Xi's parade signals deliberate preparation for leadership.
Yet the succession calculus is far from settled. Kim, only in his early 40s, remains in relatively
stable health despite periodic illnesses that result in occasional public appearance absences.
There's also the question of the willingness of North Korea's entrenched military and party
elite to accept a woman at the helm. For now, her expanding role, attending missile launches and
parades and diplomatic events and now a starring appearance in Beijing, well, points to a carefully
coagraphed campaign by the leader of the Hermit Kingdom. Little rocket girl, apparently,
is stepping out of her dad's shadow. And that, my friends, is the PDB afternoon bulletin for Wednesday,
