It's the 4th of July, and this is the president's daily brief.
I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage.
Now, where normally I would then say, let's get briefed.
Instead, well, I just have a simple greeting to everyone in the U.S., waking up to celebrate the
4th July holiday on the nation's 248th birthday.
I hope you're able to celebrate it with family and friends.
Now, I know here on the PDB, I spend a lot of time focused on instability around the globe, right?
current crisis, trouble spots, conflicts, and it does seem that the world is currently on edge.
That's probably an understatement.
We have no lack of problems to choose from, frankly, around the world when we sit down at the
PDB and decide each day what to cover.
And domestically, in the United States, well, I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying
America is knee-deep in partisanship, political dysfunction, and what seems to be a declining
faith in institutions and government leadership. But one thing I deeply believe is that America is a
very resilient, very strong, and still advancing nation. Look, most of my life, both my childhood and
adult years, have been spent around the world, often in difficult and challenging environments.
I've seen weak governments, weak institutions, nations in decline. And I'm here to tell you,
That is not the United States.
I've traveled to remote locations where I've met people who have never been to America,
but who somehow hold a belief that this country is still a land of opportunity,
where if you're willing to work hard, you can forge a better life.
It's a powerful belief that exists with people across the globe, many in very trying circumstances.
And I do hope that it remains a powerful part of the American belief system as well.
Look, is the U.S. divided along partisan lines? Well, of course, absolutely. But the nation has been far more divided in the past. Is the world dealing with numerous conflicts and turmoil? Again, absolutely. But the world has definitely been more on fire in the past. If you're an American, or if you've made your way to America in pursuit of a better life, I personally believe you have an obligation, a responsibility to believe in this nation. Look, it's not a way to America. It's not a way to America. I'm a better life. I personally believe you have a obligation. I'm a responsibility to believe in this nation. Look, it's not
perfect. Human endeavors never are. There's always room for improvement. But the 4th of July,
well, it's a day to remind ourselves just how unique this country is and how fortunate
its citizens are to be part of this amazing experiment. Now, go forth, ice down the beers,
fire up the grill, be careful with the fireworks, hug your family and friends, and have a most
excellent fourth. I'm Mike Baker. I'll be back tomorrow.
Until then, stay informed.
Stay safe.
Stay cool.
