Starting point is 00:00:00 🎵 Live from the headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, it's the Dave Ramsey Show, where debt is dumb, cash is king, and the paid-off home mortgage has taken the place of the BMW as the status symbol of choice. I am Dave Ramsey, your host. You jump in. We'll talk about your life and your money. It's a free call at 888-825-5225. Daniel is in Fargo, North Dakota. Daniel, welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Hey, Dave. Thanks for taking my call. Sure. What's up? So my wife and I are relocating for our job. We currently live in Grand Forks and we're moving to Fargo.
Starting point is 00:01:06 And when we sell our home, we'll have roughly $50,000 in equity after we pay realtor fees. And we're wondering what Dave would do. Would you put the $50,000 down on the new home or pay off something dumb that we did, and that is a $31,000 car loan and put the rest towards the house. I would sell the car. You'd sell the car? Okay. I thought that's what you might say.
Starting point is 00:01:34 No. Okay. What's your household income? About $165,000. Okay. All right. So let me kind of walk you through the equation of how I went there so quickly. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Let's say that we pay off the car with this money, and then that leaves us $20,000 to put down on our house. And if you buy the exact same house you were talking about buying earlier, essentially you have financed your car on your home mortgage. Would you agree with that? Yeah, correct. Yes. And that would take a dumb car purchase and make it even worse.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Okay. That's how I got there so quickly because basically we're financing a car now over 15 years, which I'm not going to tell you to do ever, obviously. Would I refinance my house in order to buy a $30,000 car? Not in a million years. And it's basically the same equation. We're just saying it in different ways as we continue in our conversation here and sometimes if you just look at it through a different different stand over on the other
Starting point is 00:02:48 side of it and look at it from the left rather than from the right you see oh my god that really is dumb you know and so it's not as it's not as uh you know it's not just dave says sell the car it's do you really want to finance this car over 15 years? Correct. No, I don't want to do that. And it's a car I can't afford. I know I can't afford it because I didn't pay for it. If you didn't pay for it, we know you can't afford it. So, yeah, I'm sorry, dude.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I know that's a sweet car, and I'm a car guy. I like nice cars, but too many times our nice cars have us instead of us have them. Shannon is with us in Atlanta. Hi, Shannon. How are you? Hi. Hey, what's up? Glad to be here.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Good to have you. How can I help? I am trying to figure out what to do. My husband is in an apprenticeship position. It's paid, but it's only about $30,000 a year. We expect that in about a year he would be making pretty good money, you know, somewhere around $100,000. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:55 What's he apprenticing for? It's kind of an architectural sales position, and he's got a great opportunity, and we definitely agreed, like, this is what we should do. So we're living in a parent's basement, you know, because we couldn't live on that. We have some debt. But what I'm feeling as he's doing this, it's like he's logging in, he's doing 40 hours a week and stuff. But meanwhile, like, we're just barely getting by and living in the parents' basement.
Starting point is 00:04:32 So it's like, do, and I've been working part-time. I've got a baby, but I've been doing some stuff to bring in some income. How old are you two? She's eight months old. How old are you two? Oh, eight months old. How old are you two? Oh, 34 and 36. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:04:50 And he took this job, he took this apprentice job how long ago? It's been about six months. Okay. And there's written promises that at the completion of the apprenticeship that he will have access to this kind of income? No. There are no written promises. I've never heard of an architectural sales apprenticeship, so it's new to me. I'm trying to understand why you would do this.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Yeah, it's not a very common thing, and definitely you've got to put in the door in a position an opportunity that a lot of people don't get. And we know the owner, and we totally believe that this will happen. It's just I don't know if during the meantime it's like, okay. Well, if he's only working 40 hours during the meantime, he needs to be working on the job. Right. You got bills to pay you can't pay, and his wife, who's got a baby at home, is calling me. It's a pretty simple equation.
Starting point is 00:05:53 He needs more money. So what is his income today? It's $30,000. And how much would another $1,000 a month change your life? It would definitely help with feeling more calm and you know like we can make a dent in our debt i just you know we're just barely paying i'm not trying to make you feel more calm i'm trying to get you where you can mathematically pay the bills mathematically does a thousand dollars a month extra do it no okay what does it take i mean as far as like moving us out no i'm not trying to move you out
Starting point is 00:06:26 you're on an apprenticeship you agreed to live in her basement now you're having to put up with her goes to the territory it's what you guys signed up for you know you can't afford to move out while he's on the apprenticeship right that's you're stuck there you're stuck there for six more months or is it six more months left in this thing? It's like I said, we don't really know exactly. I would guess it's another year. Okay. I want to know exactly by Friday.
Starting point is 00:06:57 By Friday. I want to know what the guidelines are of this apprenticeship when it ends and my income goes up so I can move out of your mother's basement. I hope they keep their word. I think they're going to keep their word, but I'm not even sure what word they gave me. It doesn't work for me. I think you guys need to nail this deal down so you know what he has signed up for and you know what you've signed up for so you can see a light at the end of the tunnel and
Starting point is 00:07:21 you can put a chart on the wall when you get to move out of his mother's basement. And then he needs to work an extra job to get the bills paid. And I'm going to guess and say you have a big honking car payment, and you need to sell the car. It's just a guess, but it's a fairly educated guess. So I would add that to the equation as well. Hope that helps you, kiddo. Open phones at 888-825-5225. You jump in.
Starting point is 00:07:47 We'll talk about your life and your money. Christy Wright, Ramsey Personality and the founder of Business Boutique, equipping women to make money doing what they love, joins me at the bottom of the hour. We will have some time in the two segments. She'll be with me a couple segments, about 30 minutes here. And we'll have some time there for you to get in with your questions about women in business whether you're a gentleman and you've got a lady in your life and you want to give her some great insight from Christy
Starting point is 00:08:14 that's fine or if you're a lady and you're thinking about starting a business or you're running a business you've got questions she is the founder of Business Boutique equipping women to make money doing what they love a number one best selling book and so on and we'll have her with us in about 15 minutes here at the bottom of the hour kelly will open up some lines the number is 888-825-5225 888-825-5225 Okay, things are getting pretty weird out there. I thought the Equifax breach was bad enough.
Starting point is 00:08:59 It exposed the personal financial info of half of all Americans. Now we have breaches affecting almost every U.S. citizen, and the data stolen is more personal and equally dangerous. One company had over 230 million consumer files hacked, which included not only the home address, but info related to religion, pet lovers, smokers, you name it. And the businesses were not any luckier this time with 110 million files hacked. It really is no longer a matter of if, it's when you'll become a victim. That's exactly why the only plan I've ever recommended is through Zander Insurance.
Starting point is 00:09:36 They cover all types of identity theft for families and businesses, and they take over all the work if you become a victim. I use it for my family and my entire team. Call 800-356-4282 or visit Zander.com. That's Zander.com. In the lobby of Ramsey Solutions, Ian and Courtney are with us. Hey, guys, how are you? Hey, Dave. We're good. How are you?
Starting point is 00:10:08 Welcome, welcome. Where do you all live? Aurora, Indiana. All right. Welcome to Nashville. And all the way here to do a debt-free screen. Oh, yeah. Yes, sir. Love it. How much have you two paid off? So we paid off $142,500 in 28 months.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Good for you. And your range of income during that two and a half years? We started out about $90,000 and ended at about $145,000. Wow, great. What do you all do for a living? I'm a physical therapist. And I'm an engineering assistant at a local electric utility company. Very cool.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Well, congratulations, guys. So what kind of debt was the $143,000? Well, I'll answer this question because all of it was mine. No way! Yeah, unfortunately. I had $15,500 in a vehicle and then $127,000 to good old Sally Mae. Wow. How long have you guys been married? Three years. Three years. And so shortly after marriage, the two of you look at this pile of debt and something
Starting point is 00:11:05 happened tell me what tell me your story well we were just kind of doing the normal thing we were actually started out on the the 10-year forgiveness program and i actually heard you come across the radio um while i was driving around in my work truck and uh just was always interested in finances but really never knew um where to start or where to begin and we picked up on your program. And within a few weeks, I purchased a total money makeover, read the book. I told Courtney, I said, we've got to get on this. I said, we're doing it all wrong.
Starting point is 00:11:32 And we started it out. And she just kind of followed my lead on it. Wow. Just like that. Yeah. I mean, she's a follower, and she was really good. I have some leadership skills. What is that?
Starting point is 00:11:47 She just totally took my word for it. She didn't read the book really at all. And then eventually after, I don't know, about a year into the program, she was starting to get mad at me because of the program and everything. I said, we just need to, instead of yelling at me, we need to go through financial peace. And then you can hear it right from the source, right from Dave. Then you can yell at him.
Starting point is 00:12:07 You can take some of the heat off my back, exactly. Yell at the video guy. Very cool. Okay, so you got in there then, and you saw it for yourself rather than just going, oh, the engineer knows the numbers. Yes, sir. Because that's kind of how it started, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:21 The engineer guy, he's going to do the numbers. I'm the medical person. I'll let him do the numbers. And then you get in there and you see it for yourself. So what happened when you went to the class, Courtney, that gave you emotional ownership, really, in this thing? Sure. I think it made it very tangible for me, something that I could see. And the leaders of our class, they were very open about their debt and how they had beat it.
Starting point is 00:12:42 And that was something motivating for me. Because for me, it felt like it was this constant uphill battle. And I had this crazy burden because it was all mine. Yeah, it's a little bit of a guilt trip. Yeah, absolutely. And so that class honestly made me feel a little more supported and just give us the opportunity to truly jump in and know that actually getting out of debt was realistic.
Starting point is 00:13:03 When you guys first started, did you have any idea you'd do it this fast? That's a lot of debt in 28 months. It was a long, yeah, it was hard. That's fast, though. We started the very beginning of January in 2016, and it was hard. I mean, two years and four months, right? And that is a long, long time, but it's $143,000, and you killed it all. Yep.
Starting point is 00:13:28 How old are you two? Well, we're both 28. Okay. And you're not even 30 years old. So you're some of these rock star, awesome millennials I talk about all the time. Very good. Good for you guys. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Well done. Very cool. How does it feel now that you've climbed the mountain? It's so great. It's incredible. I think it feel now that you've climbed the mountain? It's so great. It's incredible. I think it's one of the best feelings. It's nice to know that we can move on through the baby steps now, and we just want to live and give like no one else one day,
Starting point is 00:13:54 so we're excited for us to keep traveling through the baby steps. Yeah. I mean, you're making $150,000 a year, and you're not even 30 years old, and you don't have any payments in the world. Life is pretty good. It is. It's great. It's great. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:06 That's awesome. So who were your biggest cheerleaders? I think it was kind of each other in the very beginning. We didn't talk about it a whole lot. We kind of had some friends and families that were saying like, what? What are you doing? And I think after we got rolling through the process and we were getting some traction, paying off quite a bit of money or quite a bit of debt, people started to come around.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Yeah, when you look at somebody and go, I've already paid off $100,000, it kind of shuts them up, doesn't it? Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, it's like you don't have to say shut up. It just says it. You know, it's good, yeah. That's great.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Very cool, you guys. Very, very well done. What's the key to getting out of debt? For us, I think it was doing it together, first of all, but also being willing to work very hard. I worked three jobs. Ian worked overtime. I bet. And also never really straying from the path.
Starting point is 00:14:56 I feel like once we decided to jump into the plan, we did not stray from that. And honestly, whenever I would buy something, like if I spent too much on groceries, I would feel bad because that was money that would be knocking out my loans. Yeah, it gave you boundaries and a process. What about you, Ian? Oh, I think the – it was good. I mean, we worked through it. What was the key for you? What was the main thing that got you out of debt, do you think? The work, extra work. Extra work, we worked through it. What was the key for you? What was the main thing that got you out of debt, do you think?
Starting point is 00:15:27 The work, extra work. Extra work, yeah. The income. Because you raised your income over $50,000. Yeah, Courtney finished a residency program. That was huge for her. So she got a big raise. And then I would take call and be dispatched at the utility company.
Starting point is 00:15:43 And just the extra income, any chance you could get extra overtime, do it. It really helps the snowball just plow through and go to the finish line. You know, there's something about that because you're getting traction. If you were just working like that and you didn't know if you were doing any good, you'd just be exhausted. But it's weird how it's exhilarating because you know you're winning. You can work your butt off when you're winning. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:16:07 And it changes everything. And now you can crank back down to normal people hours now and not have to be so crazy. But if you want to go for something, you know how to do it. You just dial it up, you know. And both of you have great careers and the ability to do that. So very cool. Very proud of y'all. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Thank you. Congratulations. I'm so proud of you. You're 28 years old. You're just awesome. It's amazing. Very cool. Well, we got a copy of Chris Hogan's book for you, Retire Inspired.
Starting point is 00:16:34 It's a number one bestseller. And that's the next chapter in your story now. When I hear from you, you call in on a millionaire theme hour and you say, I'm 35 and I'm a millionaire, Dave. I did it. Yeah. Live like no one else and give like no one else. That's where you're headed. You're going there, no question. And that's my prediction, by the way, 35.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Okay, seven years, you'll be there. Got it. Now, just go ahead and mark it down, then you can remind me. I said that. You can even play back to YouTube and rub my face in it if you want. It's awesome. Very cool. All right, it's Ian and Courtney, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Starting point is 00:17:06 $143,000 paid off in 28 months, making $90,000 to $145,000. Count it down. Let's hear a debt-free scream. Three, two, one. We're debt-free! And the crowd goes wild I love it, I love it, I love it Hey, at the bottom of the hour, Christy Wright, Ramsey Personality will be with us
Starting point is 00:17:33 If you're a lady out there, you've got questions about business She'll be able to take a few calls here Because she'll be with me for two segments She's the founder of Business Boutique Equipping women to make money doing what they love The phone number here, Kelly's opening up some lines, is 888-825-5225. Our question of the day comes from Blinds.com. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Starting point is 00:17:55 It means even if you mismeasure, you pick the wrong color, they will remake your blinds for free. Free samples, free shipping, new promos all the time. Always use the promo code Ramsey at DaveRamsey.com. Or no, at Blinds.com. You can't buy blinds at DaveRamsey.com. Colin is in Arizona. Dave, when you retire and start making money from your investments,
Starting point is 00:18:17 is that income considered earned income or capital gains? Also, aren't capital gains taxed much lower than earned income? That is not considered earned income. It is considered investment income, and it depends on what the money is invested in as to whether it'll be taxed at a capital gains rate or taxed on an ordinary income rate. If the investment is paying off on something that is less than a year old, it will be at ordinary income. If it's coming out of a traditional IRA where it's never yet been taxed, it'll be on an ordinary income. If it's coming out of a 401k, traditional, not Roth, it will be taxed at ordinary income as it comes out. All of the money will be, 100%, not just returns, because none of it, the growth has never
Starting point is 00:19:06 been taxed, nor the money you put in has never been taxed on a traditional. So you'll pay ordinary income on those. If you have investments simply invested in a piece of real estate, you don't pay any taxes until you sell it. And then you pay taxes on the capital gains portion. You own investments like a mutual fund, a low turnover mutual fund. You'll have no taxes on that or virtually no taxes on that until you sell it. And then you would have capital gains if you've held it over a year. So I hope that helps you. And check your tax guy.

Starting point is 00:20:45 chministries.org Y'all, I'm starting to feel like I have one of those jugglers that has 73,000 balls in the air. Not that I'm overwhelmed. I'm just overwhelmed with good stuff happening. Everywhere I turn, something fun is happening. Something good is happening. Smart Conference this weekend was an absolute blowout. Christy Wright, a business boutique founder equipping women to make money doing what they love, joins me for a couple segments.
Starting point is 00:21:30 If you've got questions, ladies, about business, you can join us here. The phone number is 888-825-5225. You did a new talk that I've never seen you do. I'd actually seen little pieces of some of that talk. Yeah. do i'd actually seen little pieces of some of that talk yeah and you kind of stitched it together in a different way and bookended it with some stories an opening story and a closing story that had everybody in the audience crying now i cry commercials so i'm an easy i'm an easy target right but uh i'm an old softy grandpa so i cried everything but and you had me bawling out there it
Starting point is 00:22:00 was embarrassing but uh powerful story about and your talk was about overcoming fear. Great talk. Thank you. Yeah, it's a really important topic, and I've really taught on this topic for years with Business Boutique because it's the number one barrier to why women don't go for it, why they don't chase their dream or use their talents or start that business or try something new. It's really fear that holds them back. And so if I can help them get to the fear and through the fear,
Starting point is 00:22:28 then I can give them all the help and business that they need. But when we started Dreaming Up Smart Conference, I've taught on life's balance for years. I thought, okay, let's keep it fresh. Let's do something new. And Jeremy Breland, my leader and myself, were talking, how could we apply this content to this audience? And really we realized that's so easy because everyone deals with fear whether it's in your marriage or in your relationships your career
Starting point is 00:22:49 and so i worked hard to take that talk and adapt it for this audience and i was really happy with how it turned out yeah it was really really strong really powerful stuff so much of it i mean i've been uh i just was editing a blog at the commercial break a couple commercials break go send it back the content people a blog article i'd written, a couple of commercials break, go send it back to the content people. A blog article I'd written a few weeks ago before I even heard your talk. And it had, you know, that element of overcoming fear because I think there's so much. We talk about transforming around here a lot. Right.
Starting point is 00:23:20 Transformation, transforming and getting yourself out of debt, transforming your marriage. Les Parrott talks about that, Rachel and Les, with marriage and money event. Or, you know, Anthony with transforming with your teenagers, you with ladies in business. Every time there's transformation as a possibility, failure is a possibility, and fear kicks in. It does, and that voice in your head gets really loud, and it starts to even sound rational. You start to make excuses that really make a lot of sense, and you stay stuck. But if you have someone that can speak into your life, whether it's a mentor, a friend, a spouse, that says, you can do this, and here's how, and you lay out the path, which we've been talking about that even just today. That's what, you know, Ramsey Solutions is so great at, is giving people the plan, whether it's with their money or their business and so on. I love that quote from the triathlete that said, don't listen to yourself, talk to yourself. Yeah, it's that simple. Instead of listening to yourself, talk to yourself. Yeah, it's that simple.
Starting point is 00:24:05 Instead of listening to yourself, just start telling yourself the way it's going to be. That's right. And even how he describes it, he says. It's just so funny. He walks around talking to himself. Yeah, when I listen to myself, all I hear is fear and doubt and worry. But when I talk to myself, I can tell myself anything I want to. Isn't it that simple?
Starting point is 00:24:17 That you can talk yourself into something. So today, it's here. I'm so excited. Your new project is here. I know. The box is cool. I'm so excited. Your new project is here. I know. The box is cool. The book is cool. We haven't even given anybody a hint this is coming.
Starting point is 00:24:31 No, no one knows. So this is like big time announcement right now. I hold in my hand the Business Boutique 2019 Gold Planner, your personal guide to getting results. And this thing is chocked full with a step-by-step process to change your life. Talk about putting this together and what's in this goal planner. Well, when I introduced it to our team a few weeks ago, really the best way that I could explain it is there are different things that I use in my own personal life to grow and to improve and reach my goals. I read books to grow. I will use workbooks if I'm doing a devotional or Bible study.
Starting point is 00:25:06 I have to-do lists, and I use a journal to write down goals. And a calendar. And a calendar. How can we pull all of these pieces together into a planner that connects those dots? So, for example, in January, we set goals, and then we talk about, then we actually put those on the calendar, then we put them on the task list, and you begin to see how those goals you set in January really can carry through the entire year.
Starting point is 00:25:31 And the way that I built it, Dave, was like I would a coaching session. So I have questions in there for reflection and activities to work through. So if I was sitting down with you over coffee, these are the questions I would ask you to help you get to where you want to be. So it's really fun. And then every single month has a different topic and teaching to help you grow. And this is kind of like a compliment to the Business Boutique book. It's almost like a workbook that helps you put it into practice.
Starting point is 00:25:54 So like the month of August is taking care of you. Yep. And then you've got the questions in here. When do you feel your best? What activities give you energy and bring you joy? And what things make you like yourself the most. Right, and then you've got worksheets, and then you've got places to put that on the calendar. So we cover a variety of topics from social media.
Starting point is 00:26:12 We help you plan out your social media calendar, selling, how to write out a sales script, time management, how to keep track of where your time goes. So all of it is super tactical, and it holds your hand and holds you accountable, even on the weekly spread, I did a Facebook live earlier and I showed the audience the weekly spread. We're at the top. It says things I'm doing this week for myself, my business and my family. And it helps you remember to make sure you're spending some time and some energy in those most important areas. There's a place to write down what you're grateful for. There's a place to write down your to-do list. And all those things point back to the goals that you set at the
Starting point is 00:26:49 beginning. We revisit those throughout the year as we go. So it's just an amazing tool to help you actually stick with your goals this year. Now, this goal planner has got some of the elements that you see out there in these really nice journals or devotional plans or whatever. And you've combined some of those. It's got extra things in it that some of them don't have. And I didn't realize there's a real space that a lot of people pay like $100 for these things. That's right. That's right.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Normally, they're anywhere between $60 and $80. Some of them are $100. This thing is nice. I mean, we spent some bucks on just the design, but then the actual product itself, the cost of goods sold is very high. When we got that sample a few weeks ago, I promise you I have not put it down. I take it with me everywhere I go just because it's so beautiful. I just want to hold it. But, yeah, it's a really high quality.
Starting point is 00:27:37 It's really durable, and it's something that's beautiful. You want to hold. You want to keep with you. It sits nicely with the business boutique book, and it helps you. We're selling it for what? What are we selling it for? $49.99. $49.99, and it's on sale now. It is. It's Business Boutique book. And it helps you. We're selling it for what? What are we selling it for? $49.99. $49.99.
Starting point is 00:27:46 And it's on sale now? It is. It's on pre-sale. So it ships November 1st. Well, by the time you get your order in, it's going to be November 1st. Basically. Exactly. And if you get it on pre-sale in the next couple weeks, you get a bonus-free lesson
Starting point is 00:27:57 on me teaching goal setting. So it helps you even kick-start this and put it into practice. Okay. So if you get it before the actual street date of November 1st, you get a bonus. Right, bonus video. We'll throw in, and that bonus video is probably a $100 item. Okay, very cool. The Gold Planner, the Business Boutique Gold Planner for 2019.
Starting point is 00:28:15 It's here! I'm so excited. 2019's here. Oh, my gosh. It's upon us. It's upon us. That's a deal. I love it.
Starting point is 00:28:21 I love it. I love it. Congratulations. Thank you. Very, very well done. Now, the Business Boutique event coming up also November the 1st. Oddly enough, the
Starting point is 00:28:29 street date for the Gold Planner. Yes. You'll have them there for sale. That's right. It'll be the first place we've ever sold them physically. That's right. At one of the events. And that is sold out. It is. It is. They've opened up a few seats, but it is already at capacity. And we're really excited.
Starting point is 00:28:45 This is an event that has so much energy around it, and so now everyone's just counting down the days until it's here. We can't wait. Very cool. It's going to be here before we know it. And quite a lineup of speakers at this. Obviously, you're going to be there this year. I get to speak. I don't get to do it every year, but this year I'll be there.
Starting point is 00:29:02 And Sarah Jakes Roberts. And Sarah will be talking about what she's doing faith and inspiration she has this talk that she gave at Propel when I was on that tour with her and she says the Beth Moore yeah it's Christine Kane that's right yeah okay it's Mary and Eve in the Bible and it sounds so simple but Dave she brought the house down and draws the parallel of how we all have a little bit of Mary and we all have a little bit of Eve in us. And it is a powerful talk that has implications in your business, of course, but also just in your whole life. So people will absolutely love her.
Starting point is 00:29:34 She's phenomenal. Very cool. And Amy Jo Martin? Yes. She's an expert on social media. Her first client, social media client, was Shaq, was Shaquille O'Neal. She has this incredible story of building a social media empire and really kind of prides herself in being a renegade in that space. We're excited to learn from her.
Starting point is 00:29:52 Megan Tamptey, Emily Lay, Dave Barnes, and, of course, Annie F. Downs. So it's an incredible lineup. Annie will be our emcee. Dave will be providing music. That's right. And it's going to be a great three-day event. Back with your calls for Christy Wright, the founder of Business Boutique, equipping women to make money doing what they love, the number one best-selling book,
Starting point is 00:30:10 the sold-out event, and now the author of the 2019 Gold Planner. And I assume you can learn about that at businessboutique.com or davramsey.com. In either case, you'll find out about that. The pre-sales are happening from now until November 1st. The first ship's November 1, and you'll have plenty of time for next year and lay out your 2019 and make it super successful. This is the Dave Ramsey personality, number one bestselling author, Christy Wright, the founder of the business boutique movement, equipping women to make money doing what they love.
Starting point is 00:31:04 You've got a question for her. founder of the business boutique movement equipping women to make money doing what they love. You've got a question for her. The phone number here is 888-825-5225. Women in business. Amelia is in Lexington with a question for Christy. Hey, Amelia, what's up? Hi. I am calling Mimi because I am a young entrepreneur,
Starting point is 00:31:25 and as a girl it makes it a little difficult because I do carpentry. So people kind of look at me funny when I tell them I like to build furniture. So I'm just kind of curious if you all might have some first step suggestions for me just because what I'm into is not necessarily an easy thing to get started with. How much furniture have you built and sold? I've built a couple pieces. I haven't really sold any. I've made some things just for like school or I entered an entrepreneurship scholarship as a senior in high school and I built a piece or two for that. So I haven't built a ton as much as I wish I would have. So you're out of high school. Are you in college? Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:32:08 I am a sophomore in college, full-time. And what are you studying? I'm off to work. I want to transfer to a four-year university after being in the community college and study interior design and business. Okay. Perfect for your furniture building business. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Great. Amelia, that's awesome. First of all, I love how you introduced yourself. You said, I'm a young entrepreneur. And right there, that mindset is already going to set you up for success. You already see yourself in this space. That just screams confidence, and I love that. I will tell you one of the great things, Amelia, and I see this a lot,
Starting point is 00:32:40 is you don't have to wait until you graduate from college to start working on this. This is something that you could have a side business and start while you're in college to help you not only pay your bills, but then you're building up demand, building up your brand. By the time you graduate, this could be your full-time job. In fact, I worked with a guy that did that. He started a little t-shirt business, Dave, in college, little t-shirt business that was a multi-million dollar business before he ever graduated. And that was his full-time thing. So Amelia, you can do this. I just want to encourage you. The idea that it's difficult to get in this space because you're a girl, I think, is more in your head than in reality. If you build great pieces, people want to buy them. If you solve
Starting point is 00:33:21 problems for people, if you have a great product and you take care of the marketplace they don't really care if it was you or a dude someone old someone young they just love the furniture hey i'm an old dude that doesn't buy furniture but my wife would do a decorator and i can just tell you either my wife or i were we buying a piece of custom-made furniture made by a lady that would actually be a brand advantage because we would think that was pretty cool. Yeah, that you have a good eye for it. So I think, Amelia, that this doesn't have to be a barrier for you. I think it's an advantage.
Starting point is 00:33:54 You just get started because you're going to get the most confidence when you sell that first piece, even if it's a small piece, even if you sell it to your aunt. I don't care. Just get started. Dip your toe in the water. Amelia, we'll make sure that Kelly sends you my book and you can follow that plan. It's a step-by-step plan to grow this business and start small, start on the side, and you'll
Starting point is 00:34:13 see your confidence grow. And I promise you that will be a non-issue. It won't even be a fear in your head anymore because like Dave said, you'll start to see it as an advantage that you offer the marketplace through your business. And I'm excited for you. The fact that you're even asking this question and making that phone call, girl, you've got big things ahead for you. I'm so excited for you. So let me tell you what happened to me, Amelia.
Starting point is 00:34:32 When I went broke and I wrote a book about how to handle money, I'm a broke guy selling a book about money. That's kind of a disadvantage, isn't it? Who would want to read a money book from a guy that went broke that's what i used to think and after selling 15 million books i kind of figured out everybody wants to buy a money book from a guy who went broke and learned his lesson and so it actually turned into my what i thought was my disadvantage what my my insecurity that felt like a disadvantage ended up actually being my brand differentiator. Because I know how people feel. I've been there, done that.
Starting point is 00:35:11 I got the T-shirt. You've got a brand advantage. You've got the female touch on this furniture. And you're going to put a different kind of look, a different kind of feel to it. And it makes you different different you're not just another goob making furniture it's really cool you know it makes you stand out i just love it i think you need to get some like really cool pictures with you with your power tools and stuff and yeah do it just have some you know get in there with the big saw or whatever and safety glasses on and
Starting point is 00:35:41 that's your business card i i think it's an advantage. I think it's the exact opposite of a disadvantage. But when I started, my insecurity, I thought was a brand disadvantage, has turned into one of my biggest brand advantages because it made me different. And you need to identify that when you're doing a business, right? It's interesting, too. We just had Entree Leadership Master Series last week, and I was on a panel with Suzanne Sims, Jen Severson, and Sarah Sloyan, and a very common theme we heard in the audience asking questions is, how do I succeed? Women leaders. Women leaders
Starting point is 00:36:15 panel. How do I succeed as a woman in a man's industry? And there are certainly some industries where you need to be aware of what you're going into. But the reality is so often it is bigger in our head than it is in reality. To your point, it's the thing we think is holding us back when that's the thing that's going to set us apart and make people want to buy from us. And so I love that whole perspective, Amelia, that you already see yourself as an entrepreneur. Now you just need to see yourself as a successful business owner and start to take those steps. Well, I mean, I think about somebody like, you know, we had Condi Rice speak at the Entree Summit, and I got to spend a little time with her. Obviously female, obviously African-American, obviously uber brilliant.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Oh, you get smarter just sitting at the table with a woman. It's unbelievably smart. But I mean, uber successful. I mean, Secretary of state right the united states of america i mean you know this is no small job here yeah and but what ended up happening with her what what we we were asking her about the same thing the barriers you know the racial barrier the sexism the racism all this kind of stuff and she used the line uh from her neighborhood she said growing up in a segregated
Starting point is 00:37:25 neighborhood in birmingham alabama that her mama told her it doesn't matter where you're coming from it matters where you're going that's good and she said i don't let other people with their prejudice decide my fate yep i decide my fate right and whoa it was like coming out it was just very calm but you heard it yeah loud clear. There was confidence in there. And it comes back to that, that I'm going to own this space, and I'm going to turn what you think is a disadvantage, race, sex, whatever it is, into an advantage because it's a brand differentiator. Well, I love how you even talked about you and Sharon buying furniture.
Starting point is 00:38:02 If you look at most American households, the women make the purchasing, designing, decorating decisions. I think of a woman that makes plans. She's known in this space as creating furniture and plans, Anna White. And I buy her plans, like bunk bed plans or a fort in the backyard plans. And I love hers more because she has that female touch and that female design. Or at least you think she does. Yeah, totally. In my mind, she does.
Starting point is 00:38:24 It's got you. Oh, we're we're connected we're best friends you know she gets me so uh amelia will will draw those people based on that she didn't even realize it yeah that's that's very very important i think this is good information the book is business boutique it is a number one bestseller and you can see why christy wright is with us the founder of that you'll hear her speak all over america and teach and you'll see her on media you'll see her at business boutique.com those of you that are members of the business boutique academy regularly get coaching from her and of course now the christy wright business boutique podcast is going very well right it is it is taken off and it's amazing how when you can encourage people and inspire them
Starting point is 00:39:08 and teach them while they're living their lives. So like listeners right now on the radio show, they may be driving in the car on a commute. They may be going for a run. They may be cooking or cleaning or something around the house, but you're able to encourage them and give them the steps and plans and tools that they need to win. So it's been really fun to see the stories coming in of someone that their life has changed from the podcast. Well, the information is important because information is what changes your life. You can listen to music, and for those of you in the car all day,
Starting point is 00:39:37 I mean, if you listen to FM all the time, you get the same song about every, what, hour and a half or so. Put the thing on loop. And I like the music. I enjoy that. I enjoy talk radio in general. But to have something like a podcast where I can absolutely decide, okay, I'm doing a leadership thing on this run. I'm going to learn about leadership. Or I'm going to do a marriage thing on this run.
Starting point is 00:39:57 I'm going to learn about marriage. And you can just download the podcast. It's just information intentionally going into my life, into my body, into my brain, into my spirit. It changes everything. The new Gold Planner is out. The Business Boutique 2019 Gold Planner. On sale now. It ships November the 1st.
Starting point is 00:40:13 It's here. Check it out. Christy, thanks for stopping by. Thanks for having me. Glad to be here. Christy Wright, Business Boutique. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. Hey, it's Kelly Daniel,
