Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from the headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental Studio, this is the Dave Ramsey Show. It's where America hangs out to have a conversation about your life, your money, your job, your purpose, your relationships, your goals, your dreams. Starting point is 00:01:09 Anthony, good to see a lot of people in the lobby today. It's always fun. We've got a great group of youngsters out here sitting on the couch in front of the glass. I know, man. I'm looking at them. Just sharp, young, beautiful, handsome, chilling. That's right. That's fun.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Make sure that you all get some cookies all right they get you know papa dale i get the thumbs up they've already had some cookies so papa dave as he's known by his grandchildren uh is all about the free cookies when anybody comes to visit us so we'd love to have you here uh monday through friday uh check the schedule dayramsey.com and we would love to meet you and uh the the live studio audience does bring an energy, Anthony. It's really hard to describe. So big fun. I want to also welcome our YouTube audience that's watching as well.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Anthony's looking very, very sharp today. Great-looking outfits. If you want to see what he looks like, YouTube and high-def, just check out the Dave Ramsey Show on YouTube. What do you say we answer some calls? Yeah, I love it, Ken. Let's do it. Let's start it off with Benjamin in Provo, Utah.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Benjamin, how can we help? Hi, Ken. Hi, Al. It's good to talk to both of you. I'm having a great day. How are you guys? We're having too much fun. What's going on?
Starting point is 00:02:17 So I have a question about budgeting, and it's kind of a debt question. I've gone over in my checking account several times in the past few months, and it's resulted in a total of about $100 in overdraft fees. And that's not fine. But someone I love keeps telling me to open an overdraft line of credit to reduce fees when I go over in my checking account. I wanted to call and ask, is this a wise move? You know, Benjamin, the, let me, let me, let me phrase this answer this way.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Someone is telling you, instead of for you fixing Benjamin, your issue of not budgeting and living below your means, let's just go on ahead and just create a cushion for you to keep falling on, which is an overdraft protection. I remember those younger days when, I won't say the name of the bank, but they have America in it, and they were charging me $55
Starting point is 00:03:20 to $50 for overdraft fees, which was ridiculous. We get upset with the bank that's charging us the fees, Ken. But why do we get more upset with the bank when we should just stop doing the thing that is causing us to go into overdraft? So Benjamin, what I would recommend to you to do is to know, do not open an overdraft line of credit because you're going to dig yourself
Starting point is 00:03:45 deeper into a situation that you really don't want to get into and instead step back and just really get a detailed budget and tell yourself it's time for you to have discipline and it's time for you to do the things and have discipline when you ought to have discipline so you could do the things you want to do when you want to do them. But you can't really get to where you want to go because you're not willing to say, you know what, I have a problem. I need to stop. I need to reset my situation. I need to have a budget and I need to tell myself no. Benjamin, why have you, and you said it at the start of the phone call, why have you overdrafted a few times at least in the last several months? You know, they were really small purchases, nothing really major.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I didn't ask you that. I didn't ask you what they were. I just said, why is this happening? Well, it's honestly probably just because I'm not sticking to my budget. I created a budget, but there have been times where I've made purchases that I didn't really think about. I just wanted something, and I went and bought it. There you go. I know that's wrong. I need to stop.
Starting point is 00:04:55 It hasn't happened too much for me to really be worried about it, but I know it's a bad habit. Yeah, and that's a very good point. We're not picking on you but that's what AO just told you you got to deal with the issue you don't need an overdraft line of credit you need discipline and you need to be checking your budget
Starting point is 00:05:13 when you see that thing that you want you better go is it in my budget and I got to tell you that's why I want you to hold on the line and we're going to get you connected we're going to give you a free trial of Ramsey Plus, which has our EveryDollar app, which is something that you could have on your phone right there, AO, and he's in that store, and he's thinking, I want to get that. He needs to pull that up and go,
Starting point is 00:05:35 boom, where am I at? Because it's connected directly to his bank account, and then you've got your GoldTracker app, which will allow you to move through Dave Ramsey's baby steps and track your progress. And then, of course, the Financial Peace University course, where if you haven't fully sat through that or you need to kind of get yourself fired up again, watch that again. So hang on the line. Kelly will get you in there. Ramsey Plus, for the rest of you, such a great, great opportunity.
Starting point is 00:06:02 All three of those world-class products. And when you start a Ramsey Plus membership, you will get access and to be able to dive into all three of those. The custom reports on your spending habits, connecting straight to your bank from the app every dollar. That's huge. You can try it for free right now. The rest of you can try it for free. All you've got to do is text the word begin, begin, B-E-G-I-N, text the word begin to 33789. That's begin to 33789 and start your free trial
Starting point is 00:06:34 and get immersed in this. This stuff works, Ayo. It really does work. And Ken, I want to say this after that call. You know, another reason why he kept going over is because he didn't have a deep enough why. One of my mentors says something that shifted my perspective about two weeks ago when I sat down and talked with him. He said, you see, son, when your why doesn't make you cry, the price of commitment will make you cry. And so and I feel as if when your why is not deep enough It's hard to say no to yourself It's hard to follow the baby steps It's hard to stick to the budget Because your why is not motivating you to live below your means
Starting point is 00:07:15 Your why is not motivating you to say no And so I want to encourage not just this young man But everyone for Excuse excuse me cut off my laptop there um i wouldn't i would encourage everyone to really spend some time especially this month going into 2021 developing a why that when something tempts you to go above your budget some something tempts you to go back into debt, it's easy to say no because your why is so deep. I think that's absolutely great. At that point, we've heard Dave say it a million times on the stage and on the show, get to a point where you got to get
Starting point is 00:07:54 sick and tired of being sick and tired. And that's what you're saying there. You get to that point, and we all get tempted, you and I both, on our budget. We see something and we go, okay, boy, I really want that. I can technically do that. But when we make that decision, what we're doing is we're admitting to ourselves that we don't want debt freedom bad enough just yet because we're willing to delay. We're willing to not form that habit in a pure fashion. And it's slowing everything down. It's a really, really great point. Really, really good stuff.
Starting point is 00:08:24 All right. We're just getting started, A.O. Anthony O'Neill, Ken Coleman, here on the Dave Ramsey Show, taking your calls, 888-825-5225. Need some hope? And we are excited to have you with us as we talk about your life. We're going to talk about your money.
Starting point is 00:10:18 AO is going to dive in deep on that. And I'll talk to you about work. I'm the big shovel guy. You are. We're seeing men and women from the Ken Coleman Show making more money because they're pursuing work that they are good at, that they love to do, and that produces a result that matters. And people get promoted.
Starting point is 00:10:35 And, folks, if you're looking to make more money to get that debt snowball done faster and get into Baby Step 3 and get that emergency fund funded quicker, well, I can help you with that as well. So we're going to talk about your life, your work, your money. We do some relationship stuff pops up in there as well. And you've got a young person that needs a kick in the pants. AO has got tremendous, tremendous experience there as well. So what do you need to talk about?
Starting point is 00:11:03 We're here for you. 888-825-5225. 888-825-5225. Back to the phones we go. Rachel is on the line in Miami, Florida. Rachel, how can we help? Hi, Ken and Anthony. I'm calling up just to kind of get your pointer on where I should go next up on the baby steps. I've been watching YouTube for a short time, um, during COVID because I had lost my job and I won't be going back until next March. I'm looking at. So based on that, I kind of, I cleaned up, I removed an auto loan debt.
Starting point is 00:11:42 And basically what I'm left with is, uh is currently $58,000 in student loan debt. So it hurts, but I'm trying to get my steps in order so that, you know, now during my unemployment as I'm covering expenses and once I start the job, I could be set on the right track. Awesome. Awesome. But Rachel, how much do you have any income coming in at all right now? I'm getting about, I would say, $800 a month. $800 a month. For unemployment. Unemployment, okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:12:17 And outside of your student loans, do you have any other debt? Nothing. I paid it all off following, basically what I was watching on YouTube of the whole crew. Way to go. Yeah, I love it. How much money do you have in your savings right now?
Starting point is 00:12:33 Right now, I have $1,500. Okay, cool. Great. So here's what I want you to do, Rachel. I don't want you to worry about the student loans right now. I need you to really focus on surviving and getting through these next few months until you can get your job back and get a good stable income coming in. So I love the energy and the passion behind getting out of debt. But right now, I need you to go ahead and make sure that you cover the four walls. And we teach this here at Ramsey Solutions.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Go ahead and cover your food, transportation, housing, and electricity, your utilities. Cover those four things. You'll be good there. And go ahead and start piling cash as well. So if you can take all that within $800 and have $50 left over, just set that to the size so just in case something does come up, you have some good cash there. But once you get your job back and you have your income coming back in, then yes, I want you to attack that using the debt snowball method. And then what I would highly
Starting point is 00:13:32 recommend is since you don't have a job right now, stay on the line. I'm going to get you a copy of my quick read. It's only 80 pages long, take you about an hour and a half to read it. It's called Destroy Your Student Loan Debt. And I will walk you through the process on how to pay off your student loans. I deep dive into the debt snowball. But then I also teach you, hey, here are some other companies that may help you refi. Here's some extra ways to get some extra income coming in. And that is something that I will honestly start doing right now, Rachel, is looking into ways. Maybe Ken can help you out with this.
Starting point is 00:14:02 But how can we get some side income coming in so that way you can get some more income and get your shovel bigger? Rachel, are you furloughed and then you're coming back in March? Is that what you mean by getting back in in March? Yeah, and what makes it hard is that I'm basically signed, so I can't really go with any competition, and I can't really take on new clients. I've taken on a few that I know I'm allowed, but it's very restricted because it's a highly
Starting point is 00:14:30 restricted environment. Okay. What work, excuse me, what were you making? What is your salary? $56,000 a year. And what industry are you in? Accounting tax. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:43 The only thing I'm going to say and i thought ao's ao's advice is spot on so you can but 800 bucks is really tight for somebody who's making 50,000 and the only thing i would challenge you on is i think that you could go out and deliver food you could uh uh they're they're uh health care support workers that they need i'm not talking about a nurse or doctor. I'm saying just somebody working in hospitals, in clinics. Those jobs are booming right now. I'm just giving you a couple ideas.
Starting point is 00:15:11 I just think in Florida, knowing how the governor, I know Ron DeSantis' policies down there, the job economy is not very bad down there at all. And I would encourage you to look at all the things you could do that have nothing to do with accounting so you're not in breach of your contract or non-compete at all. But I think you could make three times what you're making right now just on the hustle factor and do everything that Anthony's telling you to do. So actually make progress, a little bit of progress. I just don't think you should settle until March for $800 in unemployment. Agreed. Do you have a degree, Rachel?
Starting point is 00:15:50 I do. I have a master's in tax. Okay. So take away taxes. Would you say that you're pretty educated enough to maybe tutor some teenagers to get them through high school with reading, math, and the basic stuff in the high school area? Yeah, that's actually a great idea that I hadn't thought of.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Yeah. So I would go to tutor.com, tutor.com, and they are looking for tutors right now, and they're paying good money, okay? And so I was just on a local news station just giving some ideas, and I think, Rachel, that's a good option for you to consider so it doesn't conflict with your current job, but you can make an extra $1,500 a month right there.
Starting point is 00:16:26 I mean, listen, here's what Ago and I are saying to you folks that are in a situation where you've been furloughed or you've been laid off, and certainly unemployment benefits, there's a reason for those. But when you can step outside of your unemployment situation and the benefits and go, okay, what could I do until I can return back to my specific field? And Rachel is an example here where she's going to be gainfully employed and she can't do a competition situation. So she's kind of stuck, but she's not stuck financially. There are multiple things that she can do and still make progress. And I think that
Starting point is 00:17:01 that's something that we've got to think about, Ayo. But I think what happens to people is we go, okay, well, we're in this line of work. And whether it's COVID or something else for a reason outside of their control, economy, maybe bad business decision by a company, they get laid off or furloughed. And all of a sudden they go, well, this is all I can do. And so we immediately go to that protectionary decision, which is unemployment. Now, again, nothing wrong with unemployment benefits. However, when you begin to look and see, okay, what could I do out here? And maybe I am working two jobs, okay, not in my field, and I'm not real proud of it. And it's not something I'd ever do full time. It's short term.
Starting point is 00:17:49 And she's looking at four months, not even four months now, less than four months before she would get back. And I just think that sometimes we have to swallow our pride a little bit and go, you know what? I'm going to get busy and I'm going to keep moving forward and not accept this fact that, well, I've been pressed. I've kind of been put in a press pause situation. No, man, you're right on. Yeah, you're right on, man.
Starting point is 00:18:05 I like that, Kim. So get after it. I love the Tudor.com. Man, there's a lot of different things out there, though, Kim. I mean, when I hear people say, hey, I'm only making $500 a month off of unemployment, you're only making that because you choose to make that. There are so many different things out there that you can jump into from Tud tutor.com to Uber Eats, like you said, to even right now it's holiday season. Do you know how backed up the UPS, USPS, FedEx, and these,
Starting point is 00:18:33 they're looking for deliverers right now. Amazon, they're looking for deliverers right now. It may be seasonal, but they're paying 25 to 30 bucks an hour just to get these packages out there. That's right. So if you're willing to put in the work, in the code, and put in some extra hours, man, you can make a living. Yeah. And again, this has to come down to your safety meter. Yeah. But the healthcare support workers.
Starting point is 00:18:55 So you're talking about the non-medical positions in hospitals and clinics. There is a massive need right now, and they're paying good money. And they're just looking for people who can serve and get the work done so a lot of opportunities out there folks always be looking to try to stay afloat and keep advancing on some level if nothing else just saving money like you recommended her really really good advice all right coming up ao i'm looking out in the lobby another fabulous couple it's got a debt-free journey to share with us in the form of a debt-free scream. It's my favorite part of the
Starting point is 00:19:30 Dave Ramsey Show. A.O. and I get to be a part of this one and walk you through their story so you don't want to miss that. Plus, more of your calls. Don't move. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. Welcome back. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. Ken Coleman and Anthony O'Neill, we are taking you through today. And we're excited because as I look across the lobby, A.O.,
Starting point is 00:20:14 I see a shiny, happy couple. David and Sarah are here on the debt-free stage. David and Sarah, welcome. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, you guys look pretty happy. We are. We're really excited. It's on our bucket list. Yeah, I'll bet. You're debt, welcome. Thank you. You guys look pretty happy. We are. We're really excited. It's on our bucket list. Yeah, I'll bet.
Starting point is 00:20:28 You're debt free. I see. You're holding that hand real tight right now. I know she's like, baby, you can let go of that hand a little bit. That's funny. Oh, man. So, where are you all from? Anderson, South Carolina. Anderson, South Carolina. I love it. How much did you pay off?
Starting point is 00:20:44 We paid off $123,000 in mortgage debt, and we also cash flowed about $35,000 in other stuff in three years and eight months. In five days. Oh, there we go. Three years, eight months, five days. So is that a total of $123,000? No, it's $123,000 plus the $35,000. We had $20,000 in medical bills one year, and then we had $15,000.
Starting point is 00:21:08 We had to replace two roofs on two different houses. So it's been a journey. It's almost $150,000 in a matter of three years and nine months. Yeah, we'll call it $158,000. Is that the number we want to cheer about today, $158,000? We can cheer with that, yeah. All right, we'll go with 158 in three years, eight months, five days.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Did I get that right? Five days. So what was the beginning point? What happened three years, eight months, and five days ago when you said, all right, we're done with this debt? Well, it probably started when we bought our first house. We bought our house, and we were like, okay. And David started freaking out about how much debt
Starting point is 00:21:45 we had. And he's like, we need to actually get through this really fast. We don't want to do a 15 year payoff plan. We need to figure out how to knock this thing out. Wow. I love it. I love it. How much money were you making throughout that timeframe? So we started at 45 and then we now are making about 150 a year. Whoa. Okay. Wait, wait, wait. Tell us about that. Yeah, yeah. Well, what happened? Well, when we started, he was the only one working. Then I got a job, and three months into my job, they said, you've got to go into sales. And I said, don't put me in sales.
Starting point is 00:22:13 Do anything else but sales. And they said, nope, sales it is. Really? Yep. So mom is bringing home some commission. Is that what I'm hearing? Pretty much. Wow.
Starting point is 00:22:22 What are you selling? Slot machines. Slot machines? Yep. That just goes to show you, everything we see everywhere has got a salesperson behind it. It does. That's funny. Wow.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Unbelievable. Wow. Okay, so, and then, David, what do you do for a living? So, I work as a store manager at a retail. So I get to make kids smile every day. So that's kind of my job. That's fun. That is awesome. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:47 All right. So tell us how hard was it to really get this thing going? Or was it easy for you guys? Were you both so motivated? Or what was it like for you? It was good. I think it was hard because we were nearly done paying off our house in Ohio. And then he had a job transfer.
Starting point is 00:23:04 And we moved states. And we had to get another mortgage, and it was bigger than our first mortgage, and we're like, this is going to take forever. Okay. And I will say something discouraging, but one of the reasons that we're so avid on why you should be debt-free is that we were still on baby step four, five, and six during that time, but I lost a job due to layoff of the company. They closed down the retail division, and then I got another job, and then COVID hit, and so I lost my job due to layoff of the company. They closed down the retail division and then I got another job and then COVID hit. And so I lost my job again.
Starting point is 00:23:28 And so then I was able to get another job, but during that time because we were budgeting and just following Dave's plan, the stress was not on what, how are we going to feed every day? It's what's the right job for me. And so that journey has been really exciting, but that was also a challenge during that time. Well, see, now I like that. I want to stay here for a second because I want people to hear that because of the baby steps and the budgeting and the discipline and the vision to be debt-free,
Starting point is 00:23:54 you had some major setbacks. Those are major setbacks. And even just the move, the transfer in some ways, it's a form of a setback it's certainly a challenge uh but you didn't go backwards no we didn't wow how how important is the vision to be able to stay with it and pop back up like you did i think your why is very important because there's so many times we're like this is just it's taking forever but we're like okay we've got a reason we've got a plan we can do this yeah i think your why has to be much bigger than just like, oh, I want to get rich. Because our why is we want to fund adoption for couples that can't afford to one day. And you can't do that when you have a house payment every single month.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Man, y'all talking my language. I love hearing the word why. And the why has to be bigger. What would you say was the key thing outside of your why? What was the key practical thing that helped you to get out of debt? It would be doing the budget every month. And I told David this more times than he'd like, but if something popped up and we overspent in one category,
Starting point is 00:24:57 we had to cut somewhere else. I was like, we're not in Congress. We can't live on more than we make. We have to budget this to what we actually make each month. Who's the spender? Who's the nerd? I am the spender. I can spend money like anybody, but debt scares me because I don't like the idea of owing somebody. So before the first, we'd kind of started Dave Ramsey six months prior to saving up for a house and she didn't see me stressing out about debt. And then we had a mortgage and I went razor thin on everything.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Let's talk about this though. I mean, because I'm curious. How old are you two? 28. And I'm 30. Wow. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Youngsters, Ayo.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Are you starting to feel old a little bit? I'm feeling real old right now. All right. A 28-year-old and a 30-year-old three years and nine months ago said, hey, we're going to pay off our mortgage? Yes. Y'all are crazy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:48 Y'all are just weird. What was the most extreme thing you did in this process? I mean, we were driving pretty old cars for a long time. We finally upgraded this year, but my boss would tease me because I was making a good amount of money, but I was driving a 96 Nissan Altima for a long time. How many miles was on the Ultima? Do you remember? Like 250. Oh, that's impressive. The power steering went out for six months, but I didn't realize it because I had surgery on my wrist,
Starting point is 00:26:13 and I didn't realize that I had no power steering for six months. You thought it was just your wrist was a little weak. Yep. So I got to tell you, I got an old story like that. I had a car. When Stacy and I first got married, I could take the key out of the ignition while I was driving. I don't even know what that mechanical problem is because I can barely spell mechanical. But it was just such a trash car.
Starting point is 00:26:34 I would do it as a joke. We'd be driving down, and I'd pull the key out, and my wife would look at me like, you're looking at me right now, like, how is that even possible? But I appreciate driving the Hoopty. I get that. That's really, really good. Who walked through? Who was your support group?
Starting point is 00:26:47 Tell us some of the folks that walked through this journey with you. We started with our small group at our church in Ohio that we got connected to. So I'll give a shout out to Patrick who kind of led the class and engaged with us. And then it was interesting because we've coordinated now five classes as well. So we've been able to kind of walk couples through and then have been able to support group and as you guys know when you're teaching it you got to live it because people are going to expect it of you so we've had a lot of support come from people who have you know walked through that journey with us yeah that's great so what's next you guys are we're a weird couple we're young couple debt free no mortgage payment i mean like what's next for you two probably
Starting point is 00:27:26 traveling some more oh yeah she looked at her husband hey we hitting the road baby yep yeah one of the things i want to do is i want to go to spain and do the running of the bulls so we're gonna we're gonna start um traveling did you you're looking at us yeah you didn't see her reaction to this running of the bulls stuff. How do you feel about that, Sarah? This is a great time to confront it. I will be on the balcony and looking down and making sure the life insurance is paid up. I was getting ready to go there.
Starting point is 00:27:55 I was going to say, you know what Dave says about life insurance? Maybe you need to get a little extra because they may not want to pay it for a boneheaded move like running with the bulls. Fun stuff. That's a wise wife, though. She's like, hey, go ahead and try it. We've got life insurance. Real quick, here's what I want you to do. Real quick, give us a 20-second motivational speech to people who are considering starting this journey together.
Starting point is 00:28:15 What would you tell them? I would say that you have no idea how much your life is going to be transformed. We had a good marriage before we did Financial Peace, and then when we did it, we had an excellent marriage. Because when you can talk about money, and I love what Dave says, you're not talking about dollars and cents when you're doing the budget. You're talking about what's the values and important. And so when you're getting on the same page with your spouse and you can get your values in line, and then you can think past Friday and begin to think about next month and next year and how you're going to live, it completely transforms your life, and it gives you a peace.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Like I said, I went through three job changes, and I was never stressed about the money piece. I was always stressed about how do I want to make an impact with my work piece. And you guys are going to make a great impact. Wow, what a story. David and Sarah from Anderson, South Carolina, paying off $158,000 in three years, eight months, and five days. Let's hear your debt-free scream. Ready?
Starting point is 00:29:05 Three, two, one. We're debt-free! Yes, they are. That is so good. Look at them. He's got that post-scream adrenaline shaking through him. That feels really, really good. What a great couple, AO.
Starting point is 00:29:21 And they really are. They really are. They're going to not just travel. They're going to not just travel. They're going to help fund other couples to be able to bring children into their home. I don't know of anything more beautiful than that. What a great story. More of the Dave Ramsey Show continuing.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Don't move. Broadcasting from our Ramsey Solutions World Headquarters, this is In Fact. The Dave Ramsey Show, Ken Coleman, Ramsey Personality, joined by my colleague, Ramsey Personality, Anthony O'Neill. And we are also part of the Ramsey Network. You can get our shows as part of the Ramsey Network wherever your podcast apps are located. And, of course, we're both on YouTube. And you can hear the Ken Coleman Show on SiriusXM, as well as your talk radio station around the country, KenColeman.com for more information, and AnthonyO'Neill.com as well. So, and Anthony O'Neill on Instagram, and Ken Coleman on Instagram as well. I'm trying to learn how to do Instagram from Anthony.
Starting point is 00:30:39 A little behind the scenes for you folks. So, I sit between Anthony O'Neill and Chris Hogan here in our offices about what, I think it's about six feet apart as it just turns out. And that's not a socially distanced thing. That's just where our desks are. And I learned so much from both of them. I get the great advice from Hogan on the money and all that kind of stuff, you know, because he's actually older than me. So, you know, he's the wise older friend. Yeah. He's an old man. But then A.O. keeps me up to date and young, specifically on the Insta.
Starting point is 00:31:10 I learn stuff from him because what happens is his social media team will come and they'll be hanging out and I'm over there acting like I'm working, but I'm trying to eavesdrop and listen because you're doing some really fun stuff. So from time to time, I'll go, hey, how do I do that? And you coach me up. So I just thought people need to hear that. Man, I appreciate you for just being honest on a Dave Ramsey show. Look, I think people could look at us, if you're watching YouTube right now,
Starting point is 00:31:33 and go, which one are you going to go to for Instagram advice? It's not me. So I've got to step into that. You know what I mean? I appreciate it, man. But you help me out. Man, you help me out too, Ken. Yeah, well, you know.
Starting point is 00:31:41 We're here for each other. I've got a good career because of you. There you go. All right, folks. Here is how you get in. 888-825-5225, 888-825-5225. Let's go to Lake Tahoe. Beautiful place there, Lake Tahoe, Nevada. And Tyler is on the line there.
Starting point is 00:31:59 Tyler, how can we help? Hi, guys. Thank you so much for taking my call. I think my question is more specifically for you, Ken. I am having, I've had a hard time pretty much my entire life figuring out like what motivates me or what can keep me motivated in careers. I've worked a number of different types of jobs and things like that. And I've been relatively successful. And I always start that path off as like, I go out like a rocket ship and then I sort of just flame out. Okay, let's pause. Let's pause
Starting point is 00:32:32 right there. That's a really interesting statement. I want to dig into that. Take us and think of those multiple times that you just articulated that you'll start off like a house of fire and then you kind of fizzle out. What is the common denominator? What is happening that you recognize as a pattern each time you begin to lose the juice? I feel like I've figured out the problem. And once I've figured out the problem, I have no interest in maintaining the solution. Yes. You, sir, are a fixer, a solver, not a maintainer, administrator. Is that true? That would be correct. And one thing is I got, during COVID, I got pretty much pretty high into the Myers-Briggs personality type. And I learned that my personality type exactly fits me to a T, how I work.
Starting point is 00:33:27 Right, which is? It's ENTP. Yep, yep. And so I work in finance currently, which can be very exciting and it can be very boring. But during COVID, I've sort of lost all the connections and interactions with people and solving problems that I had prior, and where it's gone to a very repeat processes over and over again, and it's just draining me. All right. So here's the good news. I think this is a tweak, and it's a tweak in your focus so that you are in a job, whether it's identifies the issue, comes up with the right solution, and presents it, and then I'm off to the next. who becomes that execution part. You're kind of the creative problem solver. And then you need to have somebody who is essentially the administrative, for lack of a better word, problem solver. They
Starting point is 00:34:51 take the baton from you. Does that sound right to you? Yeah. And okay. So I think that that's a really great point. And we had that. We really had that. But we're also isolated from each other now due to COVID lockdowns. And you said Nevada, I'm actually on the California side. So we've been locked down for a number of months and I'm in the office and a lot of people are not in the office. I choose to come into the office because that's just my personality. And so I have those people, but they're far removed from me. And so this last eight, nine months has been just an incredible struggle and it's causing me a lot of interpersonal problems as well. So hold on. So now what we see is it's not just a work issue. This is an interpersonal
Starting point is 00:35:39 issue for you and it's really, really difficult to be isolated. Yeah, I would agree with that. So here's what I'm saying. Number one, that's not abnormal. That is, we as human beings, even extreme introverts, long for connection and relationship. We were created, A.O. has probably preached 100,000 messages on how God created us to be relational. But whether we're an introvert or an extrovert doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:36:03 We need that connection. And so I don't want you to confuse the feelings and the frustration and all of the negative junk that you're feeling because of the lack of connection with not doing the work. And so I think, you know, the issue becomes you need to be in a situation and if it's finance, that's fine. Or if it's operations, that's fine. But you just need to be in a position where, again, you are in a fast-paced problem-solving role that allows you to interconnect with people. Now, the COVID piece you cannot control, especially when you live in California, where let's just be honest, the restrictions are much tighter. So this is for a season. So some of this may not even be professional. This may be personally you're going to have to figure out,
Starting point is 00:36:50 how do I get through this season? Or I'm going to have to be willing to pack up and move somewhere where I can work around people. But I don't want you to overanalyze this, and I think you're in danger of doing that. Does that make sense? Yeah, I mean, that's the big joke. Like, I'll overanalyze anything for $5, you know? I had a sense of that. That's why I said that. Does that make sense? Yeah, I mean, that's the big joke. Like, I'll overanalyze anything for $5, you know?
Starting point is 00:37:07 I had a sense of that. That's why I said that. And I want to free you. I personally am a big-time overanalyzer, you know? And A.O. knows that. At times where I've been stewing over something, then I just talk to him, and he'll go, dude, relax. Yeah, calm down.
Starting point is 00:37:21 A.O., thoughts on this? I think this is just getting through this particular challenge. I would definitely just focus on this particular challenge and then look forward to the next season but get through this with with all the right plan and ken gave you the right process to do it i would definitely do that and i would definitely start listening to ken's show more often as well so that way you can stay true to the plan yeah and the last thing i'd say on this and i think there are a lot of people out there that are feeling this, we have to separate, okay, what is the negative, the tension that I'm feeling, the uncomfortableness, I'm not happy, how much of it is the interpersonal, he's not connecting with anybody, versus how much of it is I'm bored. And I think that, Tyler,
Starting point is 00:38:00 you're a person who needs to be challenged, and you need to be able to move on. You said it right out of the gate. So this is not something that you need to overanalyze. It's am I in a position that I would say 70% of my day or 70% of my month or 70% of my year, I am focused on solving these type of problems that I get juiced about. So I've got to be solving. I've got to be solving problems that matter to me and helping produce solutions that matter to me. That's it. That's the construct that I teach. I would take the career clarity guide. It's a free resource at KenColeman.com. And it's going to walk you through a bunch of detailed questions that we don't have time to do in this call. And let's get those answers. And if you feel like you need a little bit more
Starting point is 00:38:43 clarity, you can call me on the Ken Coleman Show. But I think you've got it. And I think you're in a situation where you've got to go, COVID is what COVID is. And if I'm not in the office or I'm the only one in the office, as he said, and there's nobody around me, I'm going to have to do some other things to have that interconnectedness. And then separate that issue from are you doing work that you really love, that you're good at, that produces results that matter. Hey, I want to thank my colleague, Anthony O'Neill, for sitting in with me this hour.
Starting point is 00:39:13 I want to thank our producer, James Childs, and our associate producer and call screener, Kelly Daniel. But most of all, we want to thank you, America. This is your show.
