live from the headquarters of Ramsey
solutions broadcasting from the dollar car rental studio this is headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental Studio,
this is The Dave Ramsey Show, where America hangs out to have a conversation about your life, your money, your brain.
And my name is Anthony O'Neill, host of the popular YouTube show, The Table with Anthony O'Neill,
Dr. John Deloney, national bestselling author
and host of The Dave Ramsey Show.
Together, we are co-hosting today, 888-825-5225, 888-825-5225.
Phone lines are open.
And Jose is in California.
We're going to go straight to the phone lines today.
Jose, good afternoon.
How can Dr. D and I help?
Hey, thank you for having me.
Hey, man.
Thanks for calling in.
Yeah.
So I'm currently $18,300 in student and loan debt.
Okay.
I have about pretty much all, well, $12,000, just under $13,000 in my savings and checking account.
Okay.
And within the next six to seven months, um, I should have about another six thousands.
I'm currently a graduate student, um, in Santa Cruz.
Uh, I'm studying to be a teacher.
And so my question is, um, do I pay these loans off now? Um, I'm a full-time student,
so I don't have a job yet. Um,
I don't know whether I should wait and make sure if until I actually have a
job, um, to pay these loans off. Um, I don't, yeah,
I just like to see what what you guys think
yo jose man i'm just so pumped that you're actually calling in and talking
um on i mean give us a call having this conversation because it shows that you're
really thinking about your future and that you know actually having debt is not the route to go
um so here's the first thing you have eighteen thousand three hundred dollars in student loan
debt do you have any other consumer debt, like credit cards, car loans, anything like that?
No, no other debt.
I love it.
I love it.
Okay, and then you have $13,000 in the bank account right now, but this is between your savings and your checking, correct?
Yes.
How are you paying for the rest of your school?
You say you have about a few more months there.
How are you providing for that?
Is that through loans or are you cash flowing that?
So luckily, because I'm a teacher, I get the additional Cal Grant,
and I was able to get a $25,000 scholarship.
Oh, boy, way to go, Jose.
So I pretty much got all of that paid off.
Okay, cool, great.
And because it's access, I'm actually getting money back.
Yes.
And that's what I was thinking
to pay off my other loans
from undergraduate school.
Cool.
Okay, this is what I want you to do.
I don't want you to worry
about paying this off just yet
because here's the thing.
I can sit here and tell you,
yeah, take $12,000 or that $13,000,
put that towards your debt,
and then something could pop up in the next two three months that's with your
school that you just didn't see coming so i would rather you get through school graduate school
the moment you graduate okay the moment you get a job you take all that money in a savings account
and you put it towards these student loans now here's the thing you're
going to be living right now like you are a broke college student because you are a broke college
student okay you're gonna be living this life you're gonna be eating rice and beans beans and
rice that's like day but if you want to be like your boy a.o now you can eat uh hot dogs and
tomatoes gross jose have some self-respect and eat beans and rice brother okay i mean that's what i
did growing up.
You know, hot dogs, tomatoes, and some white rice.
Or we took the ramen noodles and just ate those raw.
I mean, he can do that too.
He can do that too.
Whatever you do, Jose, no tomatoes and hot dogs, brother.
But at the end of the day, Jose, do we want you to pay off the debt right now?
No.
Okay.
Having some fun with you.
But on the practical real side, to answer your question, this is what I want you to do. I just want you to just let that
money sit right there. And then as soon as you graduate college and as soon as you get a job,
you take all that money you have in your savings account and you dump it towards your debt. So
let's say for an example, you have that 13,000, you get that 6,000, man, you're going to be debt
free as soon as you get
your job. And that's a bright future for you, man. So-
Jose, how much money do you have coming back from the Cal Grant?
Cal Grant, the Cal Grant pretty much pays all my tuition fees off.
But you said you had some coming back?
$6,000. Oh, yeah.
I'm getting about $3,000 every quarter back.
No, $7,000, but half of that covers my rent,
just because Santa Cruz rent is pretty expensive. Sure.
Man, I know all about California, man.
I'm heading there next week to see my family, so I'm excited about it, man.
But, Jose, you're on the right path.
Thank you so much for calling in, man, and we're praying for you.
Sandra is in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Good afternoon, Sandra.
How can Dr. Dana help?
Hi, how are you?
Hey, how can we help?
Yeah, so my husband and I are kind of in a crossroads.
We're trying to figure out, so we don't have any debt except for our mortgages,
but we have two mortgages just because we bought a beach house. Okay. So our primary home
only has about five years left on its mortgage. And then obviously the new house, we just purchased
it. And so I guess our question is like at the end of the month, we have a little money left over.
So for the last few years, we've been paying down our primary. But now at this point, because of where our primary is,
we're not paying much interest because we're at the tail end of it. It's like under $200 a month
for the interest, whereas the new house, it's much higher. And so we're trying to figure out,
we have an extra $500 each month. Does it go to the primary, the secondary, or do we put in extra for the kids' college?
Okay.
We have three kids.
And I know you said this earlier, but I just want to make sure I have the numbers correct.
How much is left on your primary home?
$80,000.
Okay, $80,000.
How much do you owe in a new home?
$290,000.
$290,000.
Is your new home, are these, is your primary home and new home in the same state, same city?
No, it's not.
Okay.
Okay.
You may not like what I'm about to say, Sandra.
Do you know where I'm about to go here?
Mm-mm.
Okay.
Yes, you do, Sandra.
You know.
I'm not a huge fan of you having two homes, and both of them are, I mean,
and they're not even in the same state and the same city.
No, but we did that on, but the one thing that I have to say, two homes and both of them are, I mean, and they're not even the same state in the same city.
So, but we did that on, but the one thing that I have to say, um, is the amount of money we're spending on vacation, the new home, that's basically what our mortgage and interest is.
So in that sense, obviously we had to put the down payment on it. Um, and then also right now
we're actually renting it. So we're renting it for more than what the mortgage and interest is. So I don't know if that affects your thoughts on it.
It doesn't affect my thoughts on it, but I will respect where you are. So to answer your practical
question, because we want to help you get out of debt, I will go ahead and just attack your
mortgage. Okay. I would very much so consider getting rid of an extra home and paying cash for it.
So we're not back in this situation in the past.
OK, the main thing that we teach here at Ramsey Solutions, Dr. D, is, you know, any type of investment properties we pay cash for.
Right. We only finance and it's only OK to finance your primary home.
That's it. OK, I want I want to get into real estate.
Me and Dave just talking about that yesterday
on the show. But I do
know one thing. I've got to pay off my mortgage
first. Then once I do that,
anything else that's outside of my
primary home, I've got to pay cash for it.
That's right, because she's got it rented for now.
She's got it rented for now
until her state shuts down travel, or
until her fill-in-the-blank, fill-in-the-blank, fill-in-the-blank.
And then you're going to be stuck with two mortgages, neither of which you can afford.
Oh, Lord.
Man, you're playing with fire.
Yeah, let's not play with fire, man.
And then here's the thing.
When you pay for it cash, it's instantly making cash.
That's right.
That's what we're all about here.
Cash.
This is the Dave Ramsey Show.
You know, so many people have such a negative attitude about life insurance when it's actually one of the most caring and giving things that you can do.
Still, 7 out of 10 families either have no life insurance or they don't have enough.
I don't get it.
Look around.
People die.
At all ages.
I know it's sad, but that's reality.
What's worse is when they leave their family unprotected, creating even more hardship.
Yet somehow we find reasons not to get it done.
It can't be the price.
Term insurance is just plain cheap.
Now, that's why I talk about Zander Insurance so much. Not because they're just an advertiser, but because they offer
a crucial service that helps you and me. Call them at 800-356-4282 or check out their rates
at zander.com. Listen, in the end, you need to get past the unpleasant images and just make sure
your family's protected. Be responsible and feel good about what you've accomplished.
Go to Zander.com or call 800-356-4282.
800-356-4282.
Dr. John Deloney, Anthony O'Neill, Ramsey Personalities, on the Dave Ramsey Show right here.
Open phone lines, 888-825-5225, 888-825-5225.
Christina is in Orlando.
Good afternoon, Christina.
How can Dr. D and I help?
Good afternoon.
Thank you so much for taking my call. I'm calling because I currently
have a debt with Discover. It's a credit card debt. It's for $7,500. It was for a class of
business and marketing, and it was going to be hosted in New York with food and um hotel included so i purchased this last year in december moving on forward i had
canceled because i noticed that my dad is he was getting severely sick and it looked like we only
had a couple of months with him so i called trying to cancel the class and i'm sorry if i'm a little
shaky i'm just upset because it's been like a year-long dispute. Sure. No, you're good.
I have e-mails from them stating that they're going to refund me
first a half portion of $3,500,
and then the second portion was due to be returned as well.
And I have proof of that, and I submitted that to Discover
because after they sent me e-mails that they're going to send me a refund, I couldn't hear from them.
Like, they went MIA after quarantine started.
So this trip was supposed to take place in June of this past summer.
And, of course, I got nothing regarding my hotel, no type of confirmation, nothing.
And Discover is still disputing.
The last result, and this went on for six months after this then they finally tell me well we cannot reach the merchant we've
exhausted all of our options so now we're going to proceed and um basically give me this debt and, you know, I guess the mercy, uh, give me back my money
because I signed a paper, you know, confirming that I would go on this trip with them, even
though they never contacted me about it.
And I just, I don't know what to do cause I don't have this type of money.
Why did you contact discover versus the people you were doing the event with?
I did contact them and I was getting, first off, when you call them, they said, okay,
we don't deal with the accounting over the phone. It's only through an email. I emailed them and I
get two confirmations back from their accounting stating that they're going to refund me. So I'm
thinking, okay, everything's fine. What was the event?
What was the event?
It was from Success Resources America.
Okay.
And it was like for a package for business and marketing
and with my food and hotel taken care of for the week,
and all of that was in the $7,500.
Sure.
So I would take Discover out of this for right now.
Like they don't, they're who you chose to, they made this payment on your behalf.
Your dispute is with the group.
And at the end of the day, you've either got to take those emails that they sent you saying they would refund you
and move somewhere up the ladder or find an attorney.
But at the end of the day, Discover is the one that gave them money on your behalf,
and they want their money.
And so at the end of the day, whether you have it or not, you owe Discover that money, period.
Now, if another group scammed you out of something or they ripped you off or they fill in the blank,
your problem is with them, not with Discover.
Okay, yeah, because they're not responding at this point.
Yeah, and they may not
be, and at the end of the day, they've got your money.
Discover paid them.
And that's the hard part, Christina,
of what you're facing right now, is
unfortunately,
it
sounds like you have been scammed. It sounds
like you've been misled, and so
what you have to do is fight that fight. You only have two options, to fight the fight, get an attorney involved if you have been scammed it sounds like you've been misled and so what you have to do is
fight that fight you only have two options to fight the fight get an attorney involved if you
have proof but it sounds like you may not be in a financial position to get an attorney which means
number two you just have to fight as much as you can and then number three you may just have to
just just just take care of discover because the last thing you want to happen is for Discover to come towards you, you know, as far as in collections harassing you and that kind of stuff sucks.
But I would definitely see if you can find an attorney that would be willing to at least maybe write a letter, make a phone call on your behalf.
That may cost you a couple of hundred bucks to get your seventy five hundred dollars back.
So that way you don't have to owe discover but um that's the best piece of
advice we can give you at this present time and i'll be the first person to tell you i don't know
what else to tell you know because if you're that company and if you're a fly-by-night all-inclusive
everything's for one low low price of fill in the blank that event's over months ago they've packed
up and they're gone and they got paid.
And so the chances of them refunding this money are very small.
Very small. Matthew's in New York
City, New York. Good afternoon, Matthew.
How can Dr. D and I help?
Hey, good afternoon, guys. How's it going?
Good. Going great, man. How about yourself?
I'm pretty good.
Good. You sound good.
The question
essentially is, I'm 15 years old uh what should i do at this
age to make the baby steps easier before i even get there like what school should i go to meaning
like price range what should i major in uh like what job side hustle should i be doing right now
you're 15 now let me ask you this question did you want to call into this show or did your parents tell you to
call into the show and ask us?
I've been calling Dave Ramsey lately and I'm wondering about
finance and stuff. I love it, man. Good for you,
brother. That's awesome. I wish I was thinking like
you at 15. Lord have mercy.
So help us understand you a little bit
better where you're at, Matthew.
How are your grades right now?
Pretty good. I mean, above average, of course.
Above average is a 3.0, 4.0?
You're a 4.2?
I'm a 3.7.
Okay, so 3.7.
All right, so you're doing pretty good.
How much money do you have in the bank right now?
I'm about $600.
$600.
All right, cool.
Matthew, you know, if I was talking to you,
and next to you was the 15 year old Anthony O'Neill.
The here are the three things I would tell myself right now.
If I was talking to you in the 15 year old Anthony O'Neill, number one is listen to your parents wisdom and advice, because at twenty five, thirty five, you're going to you're going to go back and tell your parents.
Thank you. Because you are like, you're like, yo, mama back and tell your parents thank you because you're like all right
you're like you're gonna help mom and dad you were telling the truth i was a knucklehead i should
have listened so listen to all of the advice that your mom and dad are giving you right now and
clearly your mom and dad are giving you good advice because they've exposed you to the ramsay
organization you listen to people like dave the old og that someone called him the og yesterday
that was so funny that's what he is man you know then you listen to the young Dave, the old OG. Someone called him the OG yesterday. That was so funny. That's what he is, man.
Then you listen to the young rookies like myself and Dr. D.
And we will tell you that.
The number two is start focusing on and start having a conversation with your parents.
So I'm like, hey, mom and dad, I want to go to school.
This is what I'm thinking about.
What can we afford?
What's in our price range?
Maybe that's community college in the beginning maybe that's going to a
four year university but I would even
highly recommend that you pick up Ken Coleman's
book The Proximity Principle
and start identifying like hey does my
career path require a
four year university and as long
as you and your parents work together
to have a solid future for yourself
then you two will be you all
will be alright then here's number three.
Be you, Matthew.
You know what I'm saying?
I'm hearing you.
Yeah, be you, man.
That's number three.
In this young generation,
we often hear young people,
they're on Instagram,
they're on social media.
Man, I want to be like this guy.
I want to be like this.
No, listen, man.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
There's something special inside of you that this world needs.
And I want you to focus on being you.
When you are the authentic you, you are getting the wisdom and direction from your parents and you're living way below your means.
Brother, you are going to be phenomenal.
You're going to be ahead of the game.
You will be a multimillionaire.
You will be an influencer, but a true influencer,
not one of these little IG influencers.
No, you'll be a true influencer, man.
So I'm excited for you.
Matthew, if you were to ask me where were the seeds planted
for the job I'm in right now, you know where they were planted?
By Joe and Linda Turner
and their son Clay.
And they owned Burger King
in my local community.
And I worked at Burger King
for years,
three or four years.
And I learned how to treat people
with dignity and respect
in five and ten minute interactions.
How to be good at customer service.
How to solve problems. How to be a person of character in a hard job, right,
and how to say I was sorry, and all those things.
So what jobs should you be doing right now?
Any job is going to make you work hard and treat people right
and learn how you respond to problems and how you can overcome those things.
So get to work, Matthew.
Man, we need more young people like Matthew calling into the show.
Phone lines are open. 888-825-5225.
Dr. John Deloney
and myself enjoy talking
to young people right here on the Dave Ramsey Show. Dr. John Deloney, national bestselling author and host of The John Deloney Show,
and Anthony O'Neill, host of The Table with Anthony O'Neill,
are your hosts today for The Dave Ramsey Show.
Open phone lines at 888-825-5225.
But I have a question for you.
Have you ever made a dumb decision with zeros on the end because you didn't do your research?
Yes.
Yes.
You?
Yeah, me too, bro.
I have.
Most people.
You just had to gloss over that.
I did.
A bunch or just once?
Yeah, absolutely.
I've made some dumb decisions.
I bet mine are dumber.
I don't want to get into a contest with you.
We're not going to get into a contest of who made the most dumbest decisions because we
both know that you will win that contest.
You are correct.
Man.
But here's the truth, man.
Most people make choices based on feelings or opinions,
especially when buying a home.
But when it comes to the real estate market,
feelings aren't your friend at all.
Let me tell you what is your friend.
Facts.
Facts are your best friend so check your facts
find out what you can actually afford research what's trending in home prices talk to reputable
real estate agents in your area and never buy a house without the facts again i want you to do me
a favor america text the word house h-o-u three, seven, eight, nine, and get an agent who
will help you make smart decisions. That's the word house H O U S E two three, three, seven,
eight, nine. And here's the truth. I did this. Um, I didn't text the word house because I just
automatically, you know, use one of our agents. And I will tell you this much. My agent made an extra forty thousand dollars on my house that I sold and saved me a hundred thousand dollars on the house that I purchased because he went by fax.
He did research. He started seeing some things where the numbers weren't really fair in that area.
Then he said, hey, my guy's going to walk away. I'm going to tell you this right now.
If the number is not here, he's going to walk away.
He's bringing a lot of cash to the table.
So what are you going to do?
And the guy tried to fight him.
And my agent said, hey, just be patient, Anthony.
We're going to get this house.
And he said, if we don't, we'll just find something else and save you some more money.
So listen.
I had a similar experience when I purchased.
We used an ELP, and she was a rock star.
And man, she'll get on the phone
for you. It's impressive.
I said, you earned your money and then some.
He got his commission, 3%
and I gave him some extra on top of that thing.
Because I just really appreciate the
hard work that he
put in. So again, America, I want you to text the word
HOUSE, H-O-U-S-E-2-3-3-7-8-9
and Stephen
is in Houston, Houston, Texas. H-Town,-S-E-2-3-3-7-8-9. And Steven is in Houston, Houston, Texas.
H-Town, what's up, Steven?
Hey, Dr. D-A-O, how you guys doing?
Doing well, man.
How about yourself?
I'm doing great.
Let me get right into it.
So my wife, she suffers from anxiety, something that's probably been with her her whole life.
It's just recently popped up over the past few years.
It took us a while to get on the Dave Ramsey program
because she's been in this mindset of,
I want to live in a now.
I want to make sure to have fun with my family.
Let's just do a little bit of travel here and there.
Last year, we really got into it.
The state was, you know, not got a lot of debt.
We're down to $15,000, maybe a little bit more.
But this year, it took a turn.
With the pandemic, we lost some close friends and family,
and now she's right back in that boat of,
I want to spend, you know, some time with family and travel,
where we're still on baby step two.
Me, I'm the logical guy specifically i say it's the less chance of us passing because we've been at home but uh i can't seem to get out of my
logical bounds and into what i feel like is her emotional balance oh he said emotional.
So, yeah, Stephen, how can we help, though?
Are you looking for what to say to your wife or what to respond to? Yeah, it's more of what should I tell her?
How do I get her back on the program?
How do we keep moving forward?
It's just been a struggle right now.
Before we answer this question, are you saying you don't want to travel because you're spending a lot of money?
Or are you saying you don't want to travel because you don't feel comfortable with COVID?
No, we don't want to travel.
So we're trying to plan something for next year.
But I'm hesitant because we're still on baby step two.
I want to knock out the rest of his debt. We're trying to plan something for next year, but I'm hesitant because we're still on baby step two. Okay.
I want to knock out the rest of his debt.
Okay.
And right now she wants to save that money so we can actually have a trip next year once hopefully this pandemic is over by summer.
So, Stephen, you are not in a position to be planning anything right now.
You and your wife have to get reconnected.
Okay. So you,
you know,
you said it.
And the fact that you said it puts you ahead of,
I'm going to make up a stat because it's going to help me here.
You're ahead of 75,
85% of husbands in the country because you understand that you're coming at a
problem one way and that she's experiencing this problem in another way.
So that sets you up ahead of most people.
And then you're leaning into it and trying to solve it with logic anyway. Okay. Right. Yeah. All anxiety is brother. And I
say this over and over again, all anxiety is, is an alarm system letting you know that you're not
safe, you're disconnected and you're scared of the future. Okay. That's all it is. And so when your wife is feeling anxious, you have people that you
love around you, not well, the city of Houston is one. I've got family that lived there. It has had
one of the most significant spikes in the United States with COVID. Then people fall into their
regular protective routines. Some people curl up in a ball. Some people drink too much. Some people
work too much. Some people go find another boyfriend and another boyfriend, another
boyfriend. And it sounds like your wife, her default setting is to head out and go live life
up YOLO. We only got one shot at this. Let's go party. Okay. And so that's a connection issue,
my friend. Steven, how much money do you make a year? What's the household income?
Household income is $71,000 to $75,000.
Come on, man.
Yeah, yeah.
So listen, everything he's saying, Dr. John, stick to it.
But then here's what I would do.
Take your wife out to a comfortable, affordable dinner.
And I think to get her on board board she needs to see the vision you know and i think
it's the man's job of the home and i could probably get in trouble saying this on the day
rams show but on my show i say i think it's it's the man's job to you know sell the vision to his
spouse like hey listen this is where we want to go do you agree yes all right so this is what we're
going to do we're going to go after freedom financial freedom we we want to go. Do you agree? Yes. All right. So this is what we're going to do. We're going to go after freedom, financial freedom.
We're going to go after three to six months.
And if you can really deliver that vision, get her excited and tell her like, hey, listen,
once we become debt free, listen, we can take vacations not just once a year.
We can do it two times a year.
But right now, let's not settle for one.
Let's dream for two.
Let's dream for more freedom, for so much more fun.
But in order for us to get there, we have to do this.
We have to pay off this $15,000 in debt.
And making $71,000 to $75,000 a year, man, you can really, really attack this within the next three to six months and be 100% debt-free.
And what Anthony just said is a prime, beautiful way of getting connected with somebody.
It's not trying to solve problems, not trying to make plans.
It's backing way out, going to sit down for a meal and saying, we're separate.
We're disconnected.
We're not aligned with our visions.
And we got to go from there.
I want you to stay on the line.
I'm going to give you a copy of my my book uh redefining anxiety and you can
you read it first don't don't give it to your wife and be like hey listen you're crazy this
guy sent me this book don't do that um because then she'll burn the house down with you in it
and i will applaud her but i want you to read this and then recommend it to her as well and
then like anthony said y'all go out have a meal together and start over reimagine where you're gonna head and let her talk to you about why she's struggling
yeah man that's just one thing about me and i've learned that from my father you know he's always
at bay um like they're building their dream home and retirement home uh in south carolina right now
and my mom wasn't on board for it in the very beginning but he sat down with my mom and said
trust me this is why
we're making this move this this move will allow us to do this when we do this we can do all the
things you've been wanting to do and it was like i just felt like it was my father's responsibility
to responsibility to deliver the vision in a way that she could receive it and then now that she's
on board oh man they are just zoom, zoom, and together.
And in my house, it was my wife that sat me down and said,
this is a way that you don't know how to live because this isn't the world you come from,
which is okay, but you could sleep totally peaceful, right?
We could wake up and have no bills.
Your wife said that?
She was the one that painted the picture for me.
And you were the opposite?
Yep, opposite.
And you work here?
That's why we do well.
Marry well, gentlemen.
Marry well.
Oh, man.
This is the Dave Ramsey Personalities,
right here on the Dave Ramsey Show.
Phone lines are open.
We have about one phone line open, actually, right now.
Madison would love to take your phone call.
888-825-5225. 888-825-5225.
888-825-5225.
Sheldon is in Chattanooga.
Good afternoon, Sheldon.
How can Dr. D and I help?
Hey, guys.
I hope y'all are doing well today.
Man, we're doing better because you're on the phone now, man.
Thank you.
No problem.
Hey, I was just wanting to call and ask a question about
applying for
credit cards but also
with no credit history
whatsoever
Sheldon you know what show you're calling
Yes
Why are you calling us about
applying for credit cards? You know what we're going to say don't you?
No I don't think he knows what we're going to say, don't you?
No, I don't think he knows what we're going to say.
Oh, maybe he doesn't.
Hey, Sheldon, I'm drinking the haterade before you even said anything.
All right, so we'll let Anthony talk.
That's on me.
So, Sheldon, are you asking can you get a credit card?
Well, I mean, I'm not asking can you get a credit card. How do I go about it with no credit history?
Oh, see, see, see, see, see, see, see, see. Now, I was going to tell you, you can get a credit card how do i go about it with no credit history oh see see see see see see see now i'm
gonna tell you you can get a credit card because we can't tell you what you can or can't do but
what we can tell you what we will tell you is it is not wise and it is a stupid idea to get a credit
card now i can't teach you how to get a credit card without a credit score i mean that's just
not something that i can teach you because i don't believe it's wise for you to do that sheldon that's just being real okay and um you're going
to do what you want to do but let me tell you man having a credit score having a credit card
doesn't make you a better individual doesn't make you more financially successful um it sets you up
to fail 98 of the people who have a credit card end up in debt.
They end up not paying it on time.
It ends up in a mess.
And so what I'm telling you right now is I would avoid it all day long.
Why do you want to get one?
Why do you feel as if you need a credit card, Sheldon?
The reason is because I actually had money saved up a couple months ago
to actually get pre-approved for a truck payment
so I can get a vehicle.
But now that a lot of things have happened in a couple months,
I got a girlfriend, I've been working.
I work a full-time job but at
the same time every my my thousands of dollars that i had just dwindled away how do you shout
him 24 okay your girlfriend dwindled away thousands of dollars how you said that was so great sheldon
well i mean i just it it was just one of those things where, like, I had.
Hold on.
It's not one of those things.
How did it happen?
Like, it's like girlfriends don't descend, and then it just turns into a vapor, brother.
Do you have a spending problem?
I do a little bit, yes.
I'm going to take that as a yes.
I appreciate your honesty.
You're a good man.
I do.
And you know what, Sheldon? How did you even find out about the dave ramsey show i'm curious
i actually took a class back in high school i graduated from high school in 2015 i took a class
on fine i think it was it was one that i can't remember which class it was it was about dave
ramsey personal finance personal finance yeah man yeah and so
it's been a while since you've taken the class then huh sure yeah exactly well man we're not
going to pick on you because you're a young kid uh you called in for help and we want to help you
at the end of the day um so what I want you to do is I want you to stay on the line um she'll
pick up the phone and she's going to give you free access to Ramsey plus for a year I want you to stay on the line. She'll pick up the phone and she's going to give you free access to Ramsey Plus for a year.
I want you and your girlfriend to take the course.
Okay.
And I want you to listen to the wisdom that you're going to hear from Dave Ramsey, Rachel Cruz, Chris Hogan and myself.
And I want you to listen to those steps.
All right.
I want you to walk those steps.
So stay on the line. OK, but to answer your direct question, I can't teach you how to get a credit card and I will not teach you how to get a credit card.
But I can teach you. We can teach you how to avoid debt and how to build wealth.
So hopefully when your girlfriend becomes your wife, you two have financial freedom and you're not stressed.
That's what we can teach you.
But we're not going to teach you how to financially set yourself up for a nightmare.
All right.
So stay on the line and we'll get you a copy that Ramsey plus a 100 percent free on Dr.
D and myself.
And I promise you, you will appreciate it.
Now, if you don't listen to it, that's on you, and you can go do whatever you want to do.
But as a young man, two young men here,
we're telling you the best route to go, and that's that.
What's amazing, Anthony, is how foreign it feels to hear that series of questions,
yet how normal and regular that life is.
Yeah, man.
I'm just going to get a truck payment, but now my truck payment's out because I met a
new girl, and I just blew through several thousand bucks, and I need to figure out how
to get a credit card.
And that's just the life.
That's what we have sold as normal.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That is the life that we've sold as normal, and it's so frustrating.
But I can't even get upset at Shelton.
No, he doesn't know.
He doesn't know.
He doesn't know, and I didn't know at 19.
I thought that was a normal thing to do.
You get a girlfriend. You get a credit card.
You get a little job. You get a car.
You get a truck. You get a car. You get a car. Put some spinner
wheels on the thing. You get a tenant.
You get it looking good. And then
your world is good. You're successful.
When none of that
has anything to do
with success.
If you're having a girlfriend, it doesn't mean you. This is where having a girlfriend
doesn't mean you're successful.
Now, having a wife can make you more successful.
Having a husband, having a true partner
can make you more successful.
You know, having a credit card
doesn't set you up for success.
How is it that your credit score has nothing to do
with how much money you have in your checking,
how much money you have in your savings,
how much money you have in 401k, how much money you have in your savings, how much money you have in 401k, how much money you have in the Roth IRA, how much money you have, but it has
everything to do with the kind of debt you have, how many debt options you have, everything about
debt. But you can be making $8,000 a month, zero credit score, and they're looking at you like, nope, you're not credit
worthy. But you can be making $800
a month and have an
800 credit score, and all of a sudden you get an
800 credit score. That is frustrating to me.
It is stupid to me.
I remember when I was selling cars,
a lady came up to me. She was like
78 years old. She bought her
grandson a
BMW 7 Series. She made $890 she was like 78 years old she bought her grandson a bmw 7 series she made 890 a month on social
security but was approved for an 80 000 car that she couldn't pay for because her credit said she
was financially successful and we didn't care if she only made 190 we just wanted to make sure that
she was able to get into the car. And that was so,
I mean, now I'm so upset at myself.
So upset at the bank.
So what I'm saying is
we got to start teaching the world,
do not play the game.
You can't get screwed
if you don't play the game.
That's right.
That's it.
I'm opting out.
I'm out of it.
I don't play the credit card game.
I don't play the debt game.
No, I play the cash game.
And every time I play that game,
I win. Now, does it
take me a little bit longer to win? Yes, it does.
But you know, it feels good when I
get in my car and it's paid for.
I just bought that new car the other day, John. I got the
thing in the mail, the little deed. I framed
it. I was like, this is beautiful. I know. I did park
next to you in the parking lot yesterday. You did?
And it hurt my feelings a little bit. Did it? Yeah.
But yours is paid for. They're both
paid for. Yours is nice. But yours is nice for. They're both paid for. Yours is nice.
But yours is nice too.
It's paid for.
There you go.
That's what I love it.
That's sexy to me.
That's what I love it.
That's beautiful.
I love stuff like that.
And when I pay off my house, boy, I'm going to tell you right now, I'm going to walk into that house differently.
Okay.
Speaking of that, I've got my oldest best friends in the world.
They called last night.
They wouldn't be on the show. They walked in yesterday to their banker, wrote a check, paid their house off.
Bro, listen.
Todd and Melissa Whitaker, they paid their house off yesterday,
and they called me and just said, feels awesome.
No more mortgage.
Listen, man.
They won.
Listen, man.
I get emotional now thinking about the day when i walk in to my bank and i and
i pay off my house ramsey solutions this world has never seen me cry but i am going to be a cry
baby that day because i'll be the first person in my family to be 100 including my house debt free
well there's nothing wrong with having a mortgage.
But it's like, for me, my ultimate goal is to have a paid-for home.
So that way, when I'm married with kids, my only bill is utilities.
I can tell my kids yes to whatever I feel like saying yes to.
And when I have my mortgage payment going, and it's spring break,
man, I'm taking them to Israel.
I'm afraid that Dave's going to get a call saying,
why is Deloney running down I-65
with his shirt on, screaming?
And they'll say, because he paid his house off.
At least your shirt's on.
I thought you were about to say your shirt was going to be off.
When I pay my house off, brother, we're running down
the street. No shirts. We're going to be partying.
No shirts? I'll join you. Let's do that together.
We'll do it together. Can I get some love?
He's leaving me hanging.
That's it for this hour. I'll join you. Let's do that together. We'll do it together. Get some love. He's leaving me hanging. Oh, man.
That's it for this hour.
