Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from the headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental Studios, it's the Dave Ramsey Show, where debt is dumb, cash is king, and the paid-off home mortgage has taken the place of the BMW as the status symbol of choice. I'm Dave Ramsey, your host. Thanks for joining us, America. Christy Wright, Ramsey personality, number one best-sellingselling author is my co-host today here on the air open phones as we said talking about your life and your money the phone number is 888-825-5225 that's 888-825-5225 abraham is going to start us off this hour in san diego hi abraham how are you uh good how you guys doing thank you for taking my call yeah what's going on
Starting point is 00:01:10 uh so my question is regarding the side business um i do keto cookies uh here in san diego i just started off and seems like some of my contacts that are outside of the city and like for example san francisco and other places they're asking me about shipping them out. So my question is, how do I go from just making homestyle keto cookies and ship them out to, like, outside of San Diego? Yeah, well, there's a real practical side of this. And I don't know, you know, cookie transport, Abraham, but it's something you can certainly research and look into there's just the actual making sure they're not going to get broken the packaging what type of packaging to keep them airtight and taste good and not get old i mean there's all that practical stuff that you can just
Starting point is 00:01:56 look people in your industry um find out what best practices are um and just do a little bit of digging to figure out how they need to get from where you are to where you're going to ship them to. I mean, that's the practical side, aside from the obvious of shipping costs and that type of thing. Is that what you're asking? Yeah. I mean, like, I've been trying to – I just saw them in a box. I don't, you know, close them up or anything. And I've been thinking about maybe, you know, buying some sort of device that closes them that will keep the freshness as they ship out but like i'm very new to this and i
Starting point is 00:02:30 started listening to your podcast as well uh just to get more insight on how to grow a small business um which thank you by the way yeah it's one of the things i had in my mind like well how do i go from just you know just putting it in a box and USPS box and shipping them out, or maybe you guys would know more about the shipping process that I would. Like, I am doing my own research, but I just wanted your guys' input on this. Yeah, I've never shipped anything like that. We ship a lot of stuff, literally tens of thousands of packages a year through our fulfillment service here that, you know, when we're shipping books, we're shipping, you know, DVDs or CDs, or we're shipping Christie's
Starting point is 00:03:11 new gold planner. We're shipping everything in the world here, but we've never shipped, we don't ship anything that's produced like that. So, but, but Christie's right. The first thing I would do is I would look at two things. One is you want it where it's not going to get busted up. So the customer has a good experience on the other end. And the second thing I'm going to get, I'm looking for three things actually.
Starting point is 00:03:29 The second thing I'm going to get is some way to keep it fresh. And there's all kinds of vacuum sealing things out there. And depending on the volume you're running, you might just buy one of those kitchen vacuum sealing things, like for sealing food. My wife's got one in the kitchen for sealing up, you know, a piece of chicken or something that she wants to keep fresh, it vacuum seals it you could do that or there's all kinds of ways to do that just to keep it fresh and then the last thing I would do is I just think about the presentation
Starting point is 00:03:54 when I open the box on so many things that are shipped to me like a gift box of something there's a presentation that occurs. There's an experience. Yeah, and just tossing them in a box is not doing that. So I want a little bit of surprise and delight here. You know, we've got a guy that we work with around here, Colonel Littleton, and we buy some leather goods from him. And when you open a box of his leather goods, there's always a Goo Goo candy cluster laying there and a note that says, you know, behave, keep your character stellar. And he's a character.
Starting point is 00:04:29 He's a fun guy. And so, you know, there's a little bit of surprise and delight rather than just opening it up and finding the leather satchel. Right. And so a little bit of something to note from you, even if it's preprinted, tell them about the story of where you got the recipe or whatever. Get them involved in the legend of the business. Make the shipping experience be a marketing piece as well as just getting the cookies to them. And then the last thing I would want to know about if I were in your shoes, particularly because you live in freaking California,
Starting point is 00:05:00 is if there's any kind of legal issues on the health department side of things with you shipping baked goods. And I don't have any idea about that. Yeah, something I've been thinking about, too. Yeah, and so I would want to poke around and, you know, I don't want to open a can of worms. If you're not shipping but five boxes a year, then don't worry about it. But, yeah, I'd want it to have a little bit of presentation. I'd want it to be fresh and unbroken,. I'd want it to be fresh and unbroken. And I'd want to make sure it was legal.
Starting point is 00:05:28 And those were the things that if someone working here brought me as the CEO of this company a proposal, if we were going to do Christie's Cookies, although somebody else already doing that one, right? Yeah. So, yeah, if we're going to do Rachel and Christie Cookies or something, then we would, you know, those are the things I'd have to learn about. It's interesting, though. If it was you and Rachel, it would have to be a health bar. It's interesting, though, because I feel like one of the things I'm hearing in your question, Abraham, is this is new, so it feels scary. But it really doesn't have to be.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Just like Dave said, you can do a little bit of research and digging. You certainly want to know the health department side of things. But for the other pieces to figure out how to get something to a person unbroken, still fresh and have some cool experience elements to the presentation of it. Those are all things you could literally just test and experiment with. If you've got family out of town, say, hey, I'm trying a new thing. I'm going to send you some cookies. When they get there, send me a picture, send me a video, tell me how they turned out. Here's what I'm looking for. You know, one of the things, Dave, we did with the goal planner is the box.
Starting point is 00:06:31 It's a navy box. I should have had it today, but it's a navy box. When you open it up, it's bright pink and has a quote on it. It's that like, you know, that's wow. That like, oh, it's just this beautiful design. So there's things you can do, Abraham, in the packaging that are really simple. It can be a note, your story, that type of thing. But I just want to encourage you to try it because if you don't try it, you won't know.
Starting point is 00:06:50 So just put some things out there and see how it arrives, see how it works. Yeah, go online and order cookies from five different places and see what you get in the mail. Yeah. There's all kinds of online competitors. See what they're doing. It's a great point. Yeah, Christie Cookies made me think of that. I mean, they're a wonderful company.
Starting point is 00:07:07 They produce some great chocolate chip cookies. We bought millions of tins from them and given them away as gifts at Christmas and things over the years. And, you know, you just order from somebody and see what you get. See how they're doing it. Yeah. And that's just research. And you get to eat somebody else's cookies. But not bad research. My how they're doing it. Yeah. And that's just research. And you get to eat somebody else's cookies. But not bad research.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Yeah. My mouth's watering right now. Kelly, order me some cookies. So don't. But, yeah, that's, you know, there's, you could do that and see how someone else is packaging something then. Yeah. And not that you would steal it exactly, but it might inspire you to have a certain idea yeah a twist on that idea or something practices yeah yeah looking for best practices and
Starting point is 00:07:50 trying to figure out what to do from there so good stuff open phones at 888-825-5225 christy right ramsey personality is my co-host this hour the gold planner is out the 2021 gold planner it is here. Families all over the country are discovering a faith-based and budget-friendly way of meeting health care costs, whether they're anticipated or completely unexpected. For example, take the Olcheski family from LaGrange, Texas. Jeff and Carice had just
Starting point is 00:09:11 celebrated the birth of a new baby boy. Shortly after, they had another expensive medical issue come up. They could have faced a huge financial setback, but thanks to Christian Health Care Ministries, the Olcheskis were spared from a ton of medical bills. As members of CHM, they're part of a group of believers who financially and spiritually support each other. CHM is the longest-serving health cost-sharing ministry and is a Better Business Bureau-accredited charity. It's Christians helping other Christians, and it shared nearly $97,000 to help the Olcheskis. To be a part of Christian Healthcare Ministries, visit chministries.org. That's chministries.org.

And Christy, I've got one of our favorite people in the world both you and mine on the line right now mr our pastor max lakedo is joining us from san antonio texas max how are you brother i'm doing well it's great to hear your voice and christy great to hear yours oh i'm so glad to talk to you this is gonna be great so i'm so excited about yet another max lakedo book man you can produce some books brother what number is this max do you know yeah you know i that's it's somewhere in the 40s oh my god hey you know i focus on quantity others focus on quality that is not true that is not true
Starting point is 00:11:01 it's absolutely not true so and this one is timely and almost as if God had a plan for you to come out with this book this year. The title of the new Max Licato book, folks, is You Are Never Alone. And, man, people are alone all over this nation and have been in unusual ways, weird ways, and sad ways this year. And it's taken its toll on us. The statistics are so disturbing. You know, one out of every four young people have actually given thought to suicide in the last two months. The suicide rate is up. Depression is up.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Calls to the emotional hotline are, at one point, were 900 times what they were this time last year. Divorce rate is up. It's just beating us up. And for sure, I set out to write this book long before pandemic came. I was in the final edits when the first lockdowns happened, and that's when I began to sense, boy, I'm so thankful that the Lord placed this book on the runway, and I'm happy that it's finally airborne today. It launches today.
Starting point is 00:12:25 I'm hoping it helps many, many people. Well, I'm sure it will. Subtitled, Trust in the Miracle of God's Presence and Power. So the way we know we're never alone is God's presence, right? Yes, sir. You know, there are many ways to deal with loneliness, and typically we think the first thing to do is to go out and make friends. The Bible's all about friends, of course, and relationships.
Starting point is 00:12:51 But the Scripture teaches us that the real way to deal with loneliness is, that sense of isolation, that feeling of it's all up to me and I ain't much, is to have a vibrant, life-giving, soul-stirring relationship with God. And the real method on how to develop this, I think, is unpacked in the fourth gospel in the Bible, the gospel of John, because he says, I wrote this book so you can have life. And the word there, life, means energy and strength. So I've been captivated with that. How could this book and the miracles in this book help us deal with this sense of isolation that is an epidemic before there was a pandemic in our world. So that's what this book does.
Starting point is 00:13:47 It just welcomes people to explore a relationship with God that nourishes that need that we have to have a communion and strength, first with God and then with others. So God's presence is really tied to, you said the gospel of John is full of miracles, the miracles of Jesus, and God's presence is always tied to that. What do you think John's point was writing about that many miracles? That was a great question, Dave, because, you know, he ends the gospel by saying, if I wrote down everything that Jesus did, there's not enough libraries in the world to hold the volumes. And I'm down everything that Jesus did, there's not enough libraries in the world to hold the volumes. And I'm not sure that may not have even been hyperbole. I mean, think
Starting point is 00:14:30 about all the things that Christ did. So he self-edited, and he selected these miracles, famous miracles like water into wine, walking on water, feeding the crowds, raising Lazarus from the dead, the resurrection of Christ. Each of these miracles issues a message to help people who are in need of life, who are in need of energy, who are in need of hope. I think, for example, it's just an amazing miracle the way Jesus appeared next to this man at the pool of Bethesda who had been sick for 40 years. And he called on him. He said, now rise up, stand up, get up and walk. Sometimes that's what we need to hear from God. We need a little kick in the rear end, you know, get up, let's get moving with life. Martha, when she was weeping at the loss of her brother Lazarus, was told by Jesus,
Starting point is 00:15:26 move the stone out of the way. She could have refused, but she didn't. She was hesitant. She said, he's been in there four days, but she did move the stone. And so I think there's an invitation for us to do our part, to do our part. God's great work overshadows our small work, but our small work is important. You know, it's such a great point, Max, and it's interesting because I think as someone who, you know, I'm familiar with many of those stories, I've read the, you know, the
Starting point is 00:15:56 Gospels and the healing of the blind and the raising Lazarus of the dead and all the different stories that we know so well, but then it kind of leads you to the next question. It's like, well, what about the ones that he didn't heal? What about the blind that he didn't heal? What about those that had lifelong diseases that he didn't heal, the people he didn't raise from the dead? Like, how do you reconcile that, especially even in a practical sense in our world where we're going, hey, you know, someone else's blessing doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to get it or vice versa. So how do you kind of explain that? My answer is he will.
Starting point is 00:16:28 He will. He will raise all the dead. He will heal all the blind. He will cure all the sick. That day is coming. And the miracles of Christ in the gospel are not to show us what God will do in each and every case. The truth of the matter is, Jesus surely attended many weddings, but he only performed one miracle at one wedding that we know of. He had many friends who died, but he only raised one from the dead. So the miracles are not a
Starting point is 00:16:58 promise that God will do this in each and every case. They're an indication. They're an announcement. This is how strong God is. It's an indication, an invitation to believe in this strong of a God. But be assured, the Christian hope is certain that we all will be raised from the dead. We'll all be healed of our sicknesses. We'll all be restored to the person we were intended to be. And I don't know, some days that seems like that day's coming really soon. Yeah, with the craziness out there. Pastor Max Licato is our guest this segment.
Starting point is 00:17:34 His brand-new book comes out today, You Are Never Alone, Trust in the Miracle of God's Presence and Power. So you need to check it out folks anywhere great books are sold so with the pandemic and with the stats you were talking about earlier uh a lot of folks are scared out there a lot of folks are lonely out there um a lot of folks are dealing with different kinds of anxiety than they've ever dealt with before. Speak to them. Okay, I will. What I would say to you, my dear friend, is open your mind to the possibility of a better tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:18:16 The enemy of times like this is despair, is despair. Despair is a quicksand that sucks us down and convinces us that it's never going to get better. When you begin hearing that lie in your head, you've got to turn to God and say, God, help me. Because God's message is you're going to have a better tomorrow. So open your mind. And then second, open your mouth. Open your mouth and talk to God. Get over in a corner and just say, God, this hurts. This is bad. It's painful. Don't worry about an eloquent prayer, a fancy prayer.
Starting point is 00:18:53 God doesn't grade prayers according to style. Just talk to him. Open your mouth. And then thirdly, open your Bible. Open your Bible. Open your Bible to the Gospel of John. You know that's what we're talking about in this book, but open it somewhere, because there are so many negative voices speaking today,
Starting point is 00:19:13 just so many negative voices. You've got to find some voices of truth. Open your Bible to John's Gospel. Just read it and pray, and you're going to see that God is with you, and you really are never alone. Never Alone is the new book by Max Licato. Pastor Max, thank you so much for hanging out with Christy and me for a segment, letting us hear about it. And folks, you always need to pick up and read anything Pastor Max is writing. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. show. Thanks for joining us, America. Christy Wright, Ramsey personality, number one bestselling author,
Starting point is 00:20:09 is my co-host here on the air today. Open phones at 888-825-5225. Our question of the day comes from Blinds.com. Starting point is 00:20:36 Christy? Today's question comes from Noah in North Carolina. Here's what he asks. He says, I'm married with a one-year-old son. I made a promise to myself when I was young that I would always be present for my child in his life since my father was absent from mine. I'm caught between honoring the promise I made myself and working my second job as much as possible to pay down my family's debt. I feel like I should work as much as possible now so I can be present later when my son knows whether I'm there or not, but I'm also caught
Starting point is 00:21:03 up in knowing that I may miss important milestones in his life. We have $67,000 in debt, two cars and my wife's student loan. How would you handle this? You know, it's interesting because I think this is one of those things where, and I see this a lot, regardless of if you're a man or woman or stage of life or type of debt, it's so easy to focus on where you're not. If you're working that second job, you're trying to pay off your debt. You're thinking about your son. Am I there? Is he okay? Is he walking? Did he do something new? And you're not able to be present. But I think one of the things that's so
Starting point is 00:21:32 cool about this question from Noah is he has a goal. He has focus. He wants to get out of debt. He wants to get his family debt free. And he's going to do that. It doesn't mean that you're not going to be present for your son's life but will you see every time he giggles and laughs no you won't but it's because you're able to work the second job to reach your goal so i think if one of the things that i would encourage noah to do is to be where your feet are so be present wherever you are when you're at work bust it knowing that it's not going to be forever that you have to work a second job but also when you're home with your son be present with your son. When you're at work, bust it knowing that it's not going to be forever, that you have to work a second job.
Starting point is 00:22:08 But also when you're home with your son, be present with your son. Be proud of the moments that you are with him and really give yourself grace for being in this season of trying to get out of debt without feeling like it has to be all one or all the other. Give yourself a little bit of permission in this season. Dave, what would you say? Because I know it's a financial question, but it's also kind of a uh it has an emotional pull to it because of his history there with his dad yeah sell your stupid cars you get two car payments you want to get out of debt faster get rid of your cars uh turn your television off when you're at home and there's no reason to leave it on when you're not at home so just turn your television on so i mean people talk about how they're how nurturing they are to their children and they're and there's no reason to leave it on when you're not at home, so just turn your television on.
Starting point is 00:22:48 So, I mean, people talk about how nurturing they are to their children, and they're sitting and watching freaking HBO while the kid's riding around on his hands and knees on the carpet. I mean, you're not any more there than if you were there, if you weren't there. So turn television off, sell the two cars. That's the first things I would think about there. Listen, if you'll live like no one else later, you can live like no one else. My children, all three, are grown, married, great parents, great husbands and wives, very functional people, and I did not make every ballgame.
Starting point is 00:23:20 I didn't miss every ballgame, but I didn't make every ballgame. I didn't make every time they were a cheerleader. I didn't make every ball game, but I didn't make every ball game. I didn't make every time they were a cheerleader. I didn't make every time whatever. That was not how we judged whether or not I was a good dad. Yeah. I wasn't emotionally absent. I wasn't spiritually absent, but also wasn't financially absent.
Starting point is 00:23:43 We were building this business when those kids were little, and we were trying to recover from a bankruptcy when those kids were little. So I worked like a freaking maniac. But when I'm home, I'm home. Right. Dragging them around behind the boat on a tube, or we'd hit the lake in the afternoons or whatever. And even when they were in the first book tour, when I went out, I was gone six weeks on the Financial Peace book tour with the promise promise of disney on the other end when i get home if you guys don't drive your mother to an insane asylum while i'm gone and so because we have to get her out of a rubber room we're not going to disney right and so there's a price to
Starting point is 00:24:16 be paid kiddos yeah for us to get to do things that we want to do as a family today our family can do anything it wants to do um I mean, anything we want to do. And we paid a price to get to that point. If you were to interview my children, they would not tell you that they were emotionally abandoned by their father or that they were not nurtured by their father. But they will tell you that dad worked a lot. And when he was at work, he was at work. Like you said, be where your feet are. And so I really don't have a bunch of guilt or shame about that i uh uh but i was i would you know i coached daniel's hockey team so obviously i had to be there a lot to do that you know so i
Starting point is 00:24:57 was very plugged into that but this idea that you have to be there every time they poop their diaper that's just ridiculous that's just complete overkill. There's something, too, in our world, and you hit on this with the whole television thing, but whether it's your phone, social media, whatever, focus on quality over quantity. So let's say you're in a season of working two jobs to get out of debt. Then what you can do is when the hours that you spend with your child really be there, put your phone down, turn the TV off, really be present. So maybe it's not as many hours as you would like long term. That's okay. Focus on quality
Starting point is 00:25:29 over quantity. Really be present. I use this example. I'd rather have two hours with my family on a Saturday where we're all engaged playing together than eight hours where everyone's staring at a screen. Yeah. But the point is, if I go six weeks on the road, we pay cash for a house when I get back and we go to Disneyney and now we don't have a house payment now what's that mean well that means i get to start to make some different choices if i want to right and you know when i work now whenever my god i want to work that's right and if i want to get up and uh you know not be at the office until noon and take all the grandbaby's donuts in the morning which might have happened a time or two you know i can go do that so you know what the
Starting point is 00:26:04 what the freedom that you're working for gives you is freedom. That's a good point. And it gives you options. And so you're living like no one else. So later you can live and give like no one else. This is not a death sentence and it's not a lifetime. Yeah. He's a baby.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Yeah. And he's not, you know, he's, you know, you're not missing his entire childhood. I mean, what do military families do when the, if the in this case, is deployed for six months and is overseas? Yeah. Does a child become dysfunctional because of that? No, they don't. So much of it, too, and I'll speak from my experience as a mom, but so much of it is we get in our own head about it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:41 I remember, Dave, I remember when Carter Carter so Carter's my oldest child when he turned two years old was on the day of the very first business boutique one day event kicking off business boutique book pre-sale so you and I are in California I'm backstage about to go on stage and I'm facetiming with Carter and of course it's like everything in my heart is pulling towards oh my gosh today's birthday and I'm not there but I'm like the reality is okay if you get out of your head the reality is he will not remember. I had already spent the day before I left with him doing all kinds of fun things. We had a party for him that weekend.
Starting point is 00:27:12 He was fine. He was hanging out with his dad, getting ice cream and whatever. He doesn't know. He's two. He's not going to remember that. So much it's in our head. He doesn't know it's his birthday. No.
Starting point is 00:27:23 He's two. He doesn't know anything. It's in our head and doesn't know it's his birthday no he's two he doesn't know anything it's in our head and how we feel exactly about that situation this year we decide your birthday's thursday right you know i may just tell you that's your day it's good for us for your birthday to be thursday this year so this year it's thursday yes you got celebrated you yeah you turn two you're fine yeah so i think if we can get out of our own head, then we'll realize, hey, it gives us a little bit of freedom. Like, let me go chase this dream, pay off this debt, build this wealth, whatever the
Starting point is 00:27:50 thing is, so that just like you said, so that I have that freedom to make even different choices if I want to. So work your butt off and get out of debt so you can do that. It's worth it. And Noah, here's the good news. A man that asks this question is not a man who's going to emotionally abandon his children it's not gonna your your father was absent from you you're not gonna be absent because you asked the question right and you put the you put the pledge down
Starting point is 00:28:18 before yourself that you're gonna keep that you're gonna keep your word you're gonna be present so you're gonna be present and um i'm just saying, dude, it's a bigger deal, like you said, it's a bigger deal to you than it is a kid. Yeah. And, you know, unless you make a big deal out of it. Right. And, you know, wail and carry on and whine and all this stuff. And, yeah, it just does.
Starting point is 00:28:39 And so we just sat down and had very direct, calm conversations with the kiddos. This is what we're doing. And they didn't really get a vote. And I don't't like that i don't really care you're three whether you like it or not it's not i'm not taking a vote this is not a democracy it's a benevolent dictatorship so you know it's this is i love you and i'm going to take care of you you don't need to worry about it it's good life is good and so yeah that that's a thing and and the other thing is it's temporary yeah it doesn't last forever that's right doesn't last forever doesn't last forever doesn't last forever it's just for a little while this is the Dave Ramsey show Thank you. Christy Wright Ramsey personality is my co-host today here on the air.
Starting point is 00:30:01 I'm Dave Ramsey, your host. Open phones at 888-825-5225. Irma's in Austin, Texas. Hi, Irma. Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Hi. Thank you for taking my call. I can't believe I'm talking to you.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Well, we're honored to talk to you. How can we help? All right. So I've been following you since 2017. Did the Dave-ish. Then we got on the plan. Paid off about $64 about 64 000 we're on baby step two good and we owe um yeah we owe like 4 600 ish um on the 401k loan so we're 53 and 56
Starting point is 00:30:39 and my question is and we have almost nothing invested uh uh for the future um so my question is, and we have almost nothing invested for the future. So my question is if we should do a refinance. I've been in my home or we've been in our home for four years. And so they sold our mortgage to another company. And they offered us what's called an FHA streamlined refinance. So I don't know if that tells you everything there, but basically, um, they're stating that they can do a, um, lower our interest rate from 3.75 to 3.125. Uh,
Starting point is 00:31:23 save us some money, do a 30 year refinance with no appraisal, no income verification, no credit check. We pay the third-party fees. And what they're stating is that because they're the servicer as well as the lender, that they can do this. And I think I actually used this company on a home we had prior to this one. Now, the company doesn't matter. It's a standard program. And an FHA Streamline is at an interest rate slightly higher than market,
Starting point is 00:31:56 and the higher interest rate is how they're covering all the costs. Okay. And so if they're quoting you a 3-1, you can probably get a 2-7-5. 2-7-5? Yeah, if you went and got your own mortgage, like go to Churchill Mortgage and get your own mortgage, that kind of a thing. So on a 15-year fixed, what's your loan balance? It's $152, and they did mention the cost that we would have to pay would be 26 69 and it would be added
Starting point is 00:32:27 to the loan they drop our payment 50 but i told him i was following your plan that i wanted to do a 15 year he said well we can do a 21 year um increase your payment by 50 and do the same thing without having to go through the income verification appraisal. The only way I would do a streamline is if you can't qualify for a regular. If you can qualify for a regular mortgage, you're going to be better off to have the closing costs rolled in and take a lower interest rate. And so if you could get your current rate is 3.6, right?
Starting point is 00:33:08 3.75. 3.75. Okay, so let's just say as an example you could get 2.75. I think you can actually get better than that, okay? Okay. Let's say you got a 2.75. Okay. Then that would save you 1%.
Starting point is 00:33:23 1% of $152,000 is $1,520. Okay. It saves you per year. So if your closing costs are $3,000, it takes you two years of interest savings to break even, regardless of what your payment change is. Your payment change does not calculate into this. You just have to look at that and make sure your budget can do it.
Starting point is 00:33:45 But the interest saved is what you calculate against the closing costs, and you see if that makes sense. So basically you're not saving as much interest, and you have no out-of-pocket closing costs with a streamline, but you can get a cheaper rate than that, usually by as much as half of a point. If you go to somebody like a churchill mortgage and just get a 15 year conventional quote on your house and um i think you're going to get a better deal going that way dave i've got a question when it comes to refinancing specifically the how does your answer change if someone's planning on moving
Starting point is 00:34:22 in a certain amount of time frame is it like i'm going to stay in this house this long then it makes sense to refinance but not after you know not before then you need to stay long enough for the interest savings to repay your closing costs and so in her case we said okay if it's a three thousand dollar closing cost it takes two years to recoup if she's going to move in 18 months then she would lose money okay at a lower interest rate right by refinancing so you would not do that uh but you don't want to say you want it you don't want to refinance if you're not going to keep the mortgage yeah for whatever reason long enough to recoup with the interest savings recoup the closing costs and so the um you know most of the time
Starting point is 00:35:03 the number is around two years. Yeah. That it makes sense to, you know, you need to recoup in somewhere around two years. If you're going to recoup and it's going to take seven years, don't do it. Yeah, yeah. Because something's going to happen during that seven years. You're going to refinance again. That's going to pay off the mortgage you didn't recoup.
Starting point is 00:35:19 And so you need a fairly quick recoup. And, well, I think I might sell the house someday. Well, that doesn't matter. Yeah. But we're moving in 18 months. How do you know? My husband's job's already told him. You know, well, then you don't need a refi.
Starting point is 00:35:32 Sure. Because you're not going to recoup in that situation. So does the interest rate create enough savings to pay back the closing costs before you're going to pay off the mortgage due to moving or any other reason? So, I mean, if you've got a trust fund distribution coming, then you're going to pay off the mortgage due to moving or any other reason. So, I mean, if you've got a trust fund distribution coming, then you're going to pay off the mortgage, you know, and that's going to happen before you've recouped, then you would lose money by refinancing. So that's the thing to look at.
Starting point is 00:35:56 So, hey, folks, there's a lot of things out of our control in 2020. About all we're sure of is we are aiming at one hellaciously wonderful New Year's Eve party. Starting point is 00:37:45 it is going to be in your rearview mirror. We are starting to understand more things about this than we did know before. And so if you're going to hide at home until there's a vaccine, you're going to be at home a long time. So we're learning to live in a world where COVID exists and moving on with our lives, most of us anyway. So time to get with it, time to get ready, and it's, you know, next year is going to be a better year. We know that because this one sucks so bad. Because it has to be. It must be.
