Starting point is 00:00:10 Music Music Music Music Music Music Music Live from the headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental Studio,
Starting point is 00:00:29 it's the Dave Ramsey Show, where debt is dumb, cash is king. And the paid-off home mortgage has taken the place of the BMW as the status symbol of choice. Well, for all three hours of today's show, I have taken a second and explained why we changed the entry, the intro, the introduction to the show, like you just heard. Maybe you missed the little broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental Studio reference there. For 30 years, I've been trying to get a way to rent a dad blame car without a credit card with a debit card and not be treated like a second class citizen
Starting point is 00:01:14 and i have rented and raved here on the air last march i did a little mini rant uh off of a caller that came in asking me trying to get a car rented, and somebody mistreated her because she was a debit card user, and they wanted her firstborn to sit in the safe or some such thing. I mean, they're just out of control, right? Well, James is listening when I do that, and he's driving around in the Fort Myers, Florida area, and he texts his wife and says, you people need to do something about this. Ramsey is giving you a huge opportunity.
Starting point is 00:01:50 He will advertise for you and tell people that you're the best rental car company on the planet. His wife happens to be Susan Jacobs, who's the senior vice president of branding for Dark Dollar Car Rental. And she happened to be in a meeting with a bunch of the executive team at Hertz, who owns Dollar, and she picked up the phone when she got out of that meeting and called us. And so a conversation began. Their team, several of their executive team came and spent the day with us a few weeks later, and we continued those discussions, and we have become great friends with the dollar car rental people.
Starting point is 00:02:28 They're smart, they care deeply about their customers, and they get the memo about Dave Ramsey listeners, the Dave Ramsey tribe, you folks out there who are tired of credit cards and tired of being mistreated if you don't have a credit card when it comes to renting a car. People that just don't know how to deal with it. And so Dollar Car Rental, as of today, we are letting you know that they have, in the last several months, pivoted their entire company and reset their debit card policy, and you can now rent a car at Dollar Car Rental with a debit card and a driver's license if you're 20 years old.
Starting point is 00:03:12 That's it. Now, they'll put a $200 hold on your bank account for incidental, which they always do when you check into a hotel or anything else. You have to have money in your account, but you can walk up to the counter with a debit card, a driver's license, and 20 years old, and rent a car at Dollar Car Rental. You will not be treated like a second-class citizen. As a matter of fact, when you tell them you're a Ramsey tribe member, a Ramsey listener, that you will even be treated better because they're so excited to get the opportunity to serve you guys.
Starting point is 00:03:41 No credit check needed. They're not going to put your first born in the safe and hold them they're not going to hold a gun to your mother's head until you bring the car back all these gyrations you don't have to do the hokey pokey you don't have to do anything you have to have a debit card a driver's license would be 20 years old and have $200 in your account that's it you rent a car isn't that nice these people have been such a pleasure to work with. They're stellar. They're smart and they get it and they see what the
Starting point is 00:04:10 marketplace is doing and they wanted to be the first one to answer this call and I am so proud to endorse this company because I've gotten to know the team and they've come here. We've had lunch together. I've gotten to hear these stories. We were actually in a meeting with Susan and I picked up the phone, her phone, and called her husband.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And I got to talk to him because he's the one who started the whole thing, and he doesn't even work there. He just sent a text in and said, you've got to do something about this. Now, if you think this is all amazing, it gets better. I can't believe it's going to get better. Oh, and by the way, it's going to get a lot better because they're figuring out all kinds of cool ways to interact with Dave Ramsey listeners. You're going to hear some neat stuff coming, but I can't tell you about it. It's still on the whiteboard, but we got the basic thing done, which is the debit card
Starting point is 00:04:57 and get this. You can go right now to dollar.com slash Ramsey. Sign up for the dollar express rewards.com slash Ramsey. Sign up for the Dollar Express Rewards. Doesn't cost anything. No salesman will call. Just sign up for the Dollar Express Rewards at dollar.com slash Ramsey. Now use that URL because that identifies you as a Ramsey follower, and that's going to be the way you get this treatment, right?
Starting point is 00:05:21 So Dollar Express Rewards, and if you're not even traveling yet go ahead and do this if you don't have plans travel today go ahead it doesn't cost anything to go do it then when you get there you don't even go to the counter you walk straight to your car with your debit card directly to the dollar lot ding ding now you're like getting treated not only like a regular person, but maybe royalty, too. Wow. I love this, guys. I am so proud that there are so many of you listening and doing this stuff that it makes it to where a big company, a reputable company, like Dollar Car Rental, listens and gets the memo
Starting point is 00:06:02 and says, we're going to serve these people. This is an unusual group of people, but there's a bunch of them and we're going to serve them and that's good business it's smart business and you know business is not hard but but it's hard if you're dealing with dumb people you know and these people are just great they heard our plea they reached out to us they said we want to be that company and so i'm going to help them be that company and they wanted to buy ads on the show the show sold out we don't have any room we got a big waiting list but we didn't want to wait we wanted the debit card thing to get out there so they sponsored the studio we've never had a sponsor of the studio in 30 years of this show but now now I'm in the Dollar Car Rental Studio,
Starting point is 00:06:46 and I am proud to be associated with a company like this and to name our studio after them, the Dollar Car Rental Studio. And I'll only be in this studio for about six more months, and then we're moving to our new building, and it'll be the Dollar Car Rental Studio, the big brand-new studio that's killer and awesome and so these guys listen you got to do this stuff dollar car rental now takes debit cards if you have a debit card a driver's license you're 20 years old 200 will be held on your account make sure you get
Starting point is 00:07:18 money in the account that's all it is and go get signed up for the dollar express rewards it's free dollar.com slash ramsey now even if you don't do that when you walk up for the Dollar Express rewards. It's free, dollar.com slash Ramsey. Now, even if you don't do that, when you walk up to the counter, be sure to identify yourself as a Ramsey tribe member, as a listener. I listened to Dave Ramsey. He told me to come up to the counter. I was going to go to a different rental car company, but I wasn't sure they would rent to me because I was unwilling to leave my firstborn in the safe. And I didn't do credit checks 18 months ago in order to just walk up and rent a car.
Starting point is 00:07:52 It's unbelievable. All you got to have is a debit card now. Dollar car rental. Tell them that you're a Ramsey listener and watch and see them smile. Watch them react. Because they are saying really loudly in all caps, we want to be that company. That's good stuff, people.
Starting point is 00:08:14 That's good stuff. Things are changing around here. Have you noticed? I love it. Broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental Studio. Touchdown, baby! This is the Dave Ramsey Show. One question I get asked all the time is, do I need life insurance? Listen, the whole point of life insurance is to replace your income for someone who counts on you. So if you have a spouse or you have kids, yes, you need term life insurance.
Starting point is 00:09:08 It's the only way to protect them until you're out of debt and have built up your wealth. You're only digging a deeper hole if you waste money on cash value plans since it robs you of the ability to make real progress. And that's why I send you to Zander Insurance, and I have for 20 years. That's where I get all my insurance, and they only offer the plans I recommend. It is not expensive. It's not complicated. And Zander will be there as your guide every step of the way.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Visit Zander.com or call 800-356-4282. You need to get this taken care of. I can give you the advice, and I can tell you where to go, but it's really up to you to take that important step to get your family protected. That's Zander.com or 800-356-4282. Ezra is with us in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Hi, Ezra. Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Thanks, Dave. How are you?
Starting point is 00:10:27 Better than I deserve. How can I help? So, I'm 21 years old, and I've been blessed to have a few parents that put me through my entire four-year college career. And I'm getting ready to graduate this May. I'm going to apply for law school soon, and I'm going to be paying for everything on my own.
Starting point is 00:10:44 In order to do that, I'm thinking about taking out a loan from the bank. And to do that, I need to have a credit score, and I have absolutely no credit history right now. So my question is, how does someone like myself get a loan or do anything with money without a credit score, without going straight to a credit card? Well, the only purpose of having a credit score is to borrow money. You can do all kinds of things with money except borrow money without a credit score. And if you're not going to borrow money, you don't need a credit score. The shortest distance between where you are today and wealthy by all the data points and all the research that we've done for 30 years, including studying 10,000 millionaires, is to avoid debt.
Starting point is 00:11:34 And so we teach people to not build credit because the way you build credit is you borrow money for what purpose? So that I would have the opportunity to borrow money for what purpose? So that I would have the opportunity to borrow money for what purpose? So that I would have the opportunity to borrow money for what purpose? And that's how you build your credit score. It's a dog chasing its tail. The credit score is not an indication that you are rich. It's an indication you play kissy face with the bank a lot. So, you know, and the overarching philosophy or overarching idea is that.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Now, then it brings us back to a tactical problem in your particular situation. How are we going to get through law school? You know, that's the other issue. And, of course, there are traditional student loans. And you don't need a credit score for a student loan. They'll give a student loan to anybody who's breathing. And so if you're going to law school, you can go into student loan debt and go to law school if you want to.
Starting point is 00:12:29 I don't recommend it, but people do that all the time. So do you have any money to go to law school? Not for the amount that it requires. No, I just, that wasn't what I asked. I said any money. I have about around $1,000 saved up to my name personally right now. Okay. Do you have any
Starting point is 00:12:50 other money that you've got access to without borrowing it? No. Okay. So parents don't help, there's no help anywhere that you know of? No. Okay. Well, then what I'm going to do is start researching
Starting point is 00:13:06 how do you get scholarships for law school. It's not as easily attainable as that, and I'm also going to, as it is for undergrad, they're very difficult. There's few and far between. I'm also going to start talking to law firms and see if any of them have any sponsor programs where if you go through law school and you hit a certain thing, they'll pay for it
Starting point is 00:13:28 or something like that. I'm trying to figure out a way to do this without borrowing money because I meet people who are $180,000 in debt and didn't pass the bar, which means that you don't make lawyer money if you don't pass the bar and 180 000 in debt and not making lawyer money is what's known as a disaster and so the only way the debt thing works is if everything works perfect if there's any bumps in the road or any problems then you you know you get into all kinds of messes then with the debt. If you don't get a good law school career going, you know, if you come out and just because you do pass the bar, but you decide I'm going to be a prosecutor for the county and I'm going to make $47,000 a year, well, that's not going to work if you're $180,000 in debt, right?
Starting point is 00:14:22 Yeah. So you've got to have a track to have thought this through, and as Stephen Covey used to say, begin with the end in mind. Chris is with us. Chris is in Columbus, Ohio. Hi, Chris. Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Hello, Dave.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Thanks for taking my call. Sure. What's up? Well, I just finished the Total Money Makeover book about a week ago, and I'm really getting on track to try to get rid of the only debt I have in my life right now is a car that I can sell. Good. And I'm working extra hours, and basically I reached a point where I was sick and tired,
Starting point is 00:15:01 and I want to be a millionaire. I want to retire a millionaire. Mm-hmm. to the point where I was sick and tired, and I want to be a millionaire. I want to retire a millionaire. And all the people around me at work and some people at church or whatever are saying that not only is it kind of like an immoral goal, like this idea that having a million dollars is kind of like evil and not a good spiritual play, but also a lot of people saying that, well, with more money comes more problems and more headaches. And I guess since you're the only millionaire that I know, I wanted to ask you directly, does more money actually make more stress and problems?
Starting point is 00:15:35 Because from where I'm at, I'm saying it would be great to not worry about money again. Yeah, yeah. Well, money makes you, the more money you get, it makes you more of what you already are. If you're depressed and you get money, you will become deeply depressed. If your family is dysfunctional and you get money, they get crazier than a bean. If you are an angry person and you get money, then you become a tyrant. If you are a kind person that loves God and believes that you're managing the money for God, that you're what we Christians call a steward,
Starting point is 00:16:14 then you become a very generous person and a person who's very concerned about their family legacy. All of those things are biblical. And if your church is teaching you that the only way to be spiritual is to be poor, your church is teaching heresy. That money is evil. There is nowhere in Scripture that says money is evil. It doesn't say money is good. It says the love of money is the root of all evil. And when you say that material things take on a spiritual component,
Starting point is 00:16:51 and money being a material thing, that is a form of heresy known as Gnosticism. And, well, rich people can't get into heaven. Oh, really? But murderers and prostitutes and drug dealers can if they accept Jesus. But rich people can't. See, now you're discounting the power of the cross, and that's called heresy. And so this is a very shallow, backward, toxic form of Christianity that's not even real Christianity. But it comes from the type of people that are in that particular congregation or denomination that causes that.
Starting point is 00:17:30 And that's not a prosperity gospel. It's just reading the Word of God and understanding what it says. So, no, you're not unspiritual. Now, if you think you own money or you get uppity, as we say in the country, just because you've gotten some money, now that's unspiritual. And there's all kinds of warnings in Scripture about the dangers of wealth. But the trick spiritually is to say I don't and to believe and to act on the fact that I don't own the money. I am managing it for God.
Starting point is 00:18:01 And God tells us to do three primary things with money when he gives it to us to manage. The first thing is we take care of our own household, or worse than an unbeliever. Have you ever heard that one? Yes, sir. The second thing is we change our family tree. Proverbs says a good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children. It doesn't say it's evil to have an inheritance. It says a good man, not an evil man, a good man,
Starting point is 00:18:32 leaves an inheritance to his children's children. David did not build the temple. Solomon built the temple. You know whose money Solomon used? David's. It was inherited money. So David is evil, a man after God's own heart? That's absolutely ludicrous and horrible doctrine.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Not reading the Word of God. I mean, it's just, don't let the world teach you theology. It's a bad idea. But as far as problems, you're always going to have problems. I got problems. My car breaks down, but it doesn't break down as much as when I was driving a junky one. When it does break down, I pick up the phone and call somebody to fix it. I used to lean under the hood with a wrench.
Starting point is 00:19:17 I don't have to bust my knuckles doing that anymore because I got some money to pay a guy to do that. So it doesn't solve all my problems. But it sure does. If I get a headache, I can afford the Tylen pay a guy to do that. So it doesn't solve all my problems, but it sure does, you know, if I get a headache, I can afford the Tylenol. You know, that's the difference. So, no, it doesn't make everything perfect. It makes you more of what you are, and it's not unspiritual.

Starting point is 00:21:01 In the lobby of Ramsey Solutions, Jonathan and Erin are with us. Hey, guys. How are you? Hey. Welcome, welcome. Where do you guys live? We live in Nashville. Oh, we're neighbors, right?
Starting point is 00:21:12 Yes. Okay. Very cool. Welcome. And all the way to Brentwood to do your dad free screen. Yes. All the way to Brentwood. I love it.
Starting point is 00:21:19 All in 17 minutes. So, how much have you paid off? We paid off $80,000. Good for you. And how long did this take? 22 months. Okay, good. And your range of income during that time? Range of income went from 45 to 110. Whoa, what happened? Quite a bit. Yes. I mean, would you like one of you got a job that didn't have a job or? That would be me. Okay, yeah. And raises, too, right? Yes. So what do you do for a living? I'm a marriage and family therapist and a youth pastor.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Oh, cool. And I work at Franklin's Energy Bank. Good for you. Okay, very cool. So where are you youth pastoring? I'm out in Las Casas, Tennessee. Okay, very cool. Well, welcome to...
Starting point is 00:22:00 Welcome, welcome. Good. So what kind of debt was the $80,000? Unfortunately, it was my student loans. Oh. They became our student loans. Yes. Good. So what kind of debt was the $80,000? Unfortunately, it was my student loans. Oh. They became our student loans. Right. So when did you get married?
Starting point is 00:22:11 Three years ago, or just over three years. September of 2015. So a year into your marriage, you looked up and said, we've got to get serious about this. What happened? Tell me the story. Babies. Yes. Babies.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Yes, babies. So we were wanting to have kids, but I realized that with that debt that it was going to hold us back. And so we went to one of your guys' live events. And after that, figured out that, hey, we've got to get out of debt in order to accomplish some goals that we have. Yeah. Cool. Okay. So let's get this debt cleaned up because when baby comes, we don't want baby and money stress.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Right. Right. Good. Very cool. That's a neat goal. Worthy goal. Worthy goal. So what is the secret to getting out of debt? You did it in 22 months.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Yes. I think that the biggest for us was sticking with the every dollar budget. And in extension to that, a monthly uh like budget meeting budget committee meeting yeah um yeah and then just staying completely like focused on that and being a team in it too when it's written down and we're in agreement isn't it amazing how much power there is to that simple idea yes yes and Yes. And it actually works. Yeah. And as a marriage and family therapist, you see families pulling in six directions all the time.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Yes. If we could just get them to pull in one direction. Yes. Then everything changes for them. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So much power is unleashed in that. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:36 And what it does, it kind of says there's something bigger than me and it's we. Uh-huh. Mm-hmm. And so I'm going to give up a little of me it kind of messes with the selfishness spectrum doesn't it yes yes that's powerful guys very very cool so what when you did the every dollar budget the first time what was the feeling uh was it a big fight that night uh yeah so um the the youth pastor got the big big fight. Yes, that's right. I like it. I like it.
Starting point is 00:24:06 It's real. Yeah, yeah. So almost every budget meeting that we had each month turned into at least a conflict, if not a fight. Wow. Yeah, I know. It never got better? Well, it sort of did.
Starting point is 00:24:20 They got shorter. They got shorter, yeah. So as we got better at budgeting, therefore, it got easier and shorter. But, yeah, we definitely had some conflicts around the budget meetings. But as you were saying, being laser focused and being on the same page helped us start to see us accomplishing those goals, which was so encouraging and just kept us fighting. Yeah, literally. Yeah, literally, right. Because we both wanted it so much. so we were trying to, you know.
Starting point is 00:24:46 One-up each other on it. Yeah. That's cool. I like that. That's fun. So what was the biggest fight about? Oh, the worst one. Do you remember?
Starting point is 00:24:56 I don't know. It usually revolved around. We do it differently. We budget differently. Yeah. That would probably be the biggest one. So SheMore did the spreadsheet thing, and that just kind of goes over my head. But I was more of the every dollar app.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Okay. And so a lot of times I felt like the things were too complicated on the spreadsheet side. So she wanted to drill down and have a little side thing over here in addition to every dollar. Because she's a super nerd. Yes, exactly. Love it. Way to go. Way to go, Aaron.
Starting point is 00:25:24 I like it. And he's like, no, keep it go. Way to go, Erin. I like it. And he's like, no, keep it simple. Yeah, keep it simple because I can't go complicated. And I did not think it was complicated at all. No, it's just the way your mind works. That was the conflict game. That's the way your brain works. What do you mean you don't understand?
Starting point is 00:25:37 I love it. That's fabulous. Good for you guys. Very well done. Who were your biggest cheerleaders outside yourselves? Well, probably my brother-in-law and sister. They're kids. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:49 They accompanied us in the journey and have gotten to a few of the live events through the process. And we did FPU, part of it. We're still working on it, but through the online courses with them. Oh, good. Yeah, so they have been a big support. Yes, and our parents, huge. Yes. Very cool.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Well, it's good to have people in your corner, especially family that actually believes you can win. Uh-huh. When family tells you you can't win, it's hard. Yes. Yeah. That's good. Good for you guys.
Starting point is 00:26:18 I'm proud of you. Thanks. Well done. How does it feel? Oh. Amazing. Feels so good. So surreal, but yeah, it's amazing.
Starting point is 00:26:26 When's baby going to be here? May 1st. May 1st. Before you know it. I love it. That's so wonderful. You guys are on fire. You're incredible.
Starting point is 00:26:34 What a great young couple. Thank you. Very well done. Very well done. I think you can tackle anything. And you're on your way to being everyday millionaires. So we'll give you a copy of Chris Hogan's book to that effect, signed by him.
Starting point is 00:26:47 Thank you. Just because we think that's the next chapter in your story, that you'll be outrageously generous and be able to do all kinds of things with that money. That's very, very cool. Yeah. So well done. Very well done.
Starting point is 00:26:57 All right. Jonathan and Aaron from Nashville, $80,000 paid off in 22 months, making $45,000 up to $110,000. Count it down. Let's hear a debt-free scream. All right. Three, two, one. We're debt-free! Love it, love it, love it!
Starting point is 00:27:23 Way to go, you guys. Very well done. Man, that is fabulous. That's cool. That is so cool. You know, the coolest thing of our debt-free screams in the past two years has been the number of them that are under 30 years old. And many of them under 30, even under 35, paying off their homes and everything.
Starting point is 00:27:46 And this generation, there's a whole segment of these millennials that are set up to win. And nobody's talking about it but me. I don't hear anybody saying good things about millennials but me. Because I'm seeing the rock star ones. These guys are incredible. What a sharp couple. What a very, very neat couple. All right, Alfredo is with us in San Jose, California.
Starting point is 00:28:10 Hey, Alfredo, how are you? Not too bad, Dave. How about yourself? Better than I deserve. What's up? So I got myself a couple years back into $17,000 worth of credit cards and consolidation loans. And struggled quite a bit with that. And just recently I did a program with Freedom Financial where they took all my collections and consolidated with that.
Starting point is 00:28:35 And now I am into new debt after Freedom Financial and I'm currently in debt with $12,000 and have started the snowball process to get myself out of debt. Good. How can I help? Well, I was wondering if with my biggest debt that I have, I currently have a 29% APR on it and have been with this loan of $9,000. Now I have it to... You have $12,000 in debt? Huh?
Starting point is 00:29:08 You have $12,000 total in debt right now? Yes, sir. Yeah, your interest rate's not your issue. Your income is. You should pay that off very, very, very quickly, and then the interest rate won't matter. What is your household income? It is $30,000.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Okay, cool. And you're working 40 hours? Yes, sir. Okay, cool. And you're working 40 hours? Yes, sir. Okay. You need 40 more hours. You can be working like a crazy man and get your income up. $1,000 a month changes your life, doesn't it? Oh, it sure does.
Starting point is 00:29:37 Yeah. And that's a better answer than trying to refinance your way out of debt. You've tried that three times. You can't refinance your way out of debt. Interest rates that three times. You can't refinance your way out of debt. Interest rates are not your problem. You've gotten it all the way down to 12. Let's go crazy and get your income up. Pick up three extra jobs that pay really, really well
Starting point is 00:29:54 or take all the overtime at your place if it pays well that they'll give you. Go crazy for 12 months or less. I mean, if you could make $2,000 a month, you'd be debt-free in six months. $2,000 a month. You'd be debt-free in six months. Somewhere like that. That's what I want you to do. That's the angle to take on this.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Very good stuff. This is The Dave Ramsey Show. Our scripture of the day, 1 Timothy 4.10 That is why we labor and strive because we have put our hope in the living God who is the Savior of all people and especially of those who believe the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. Alexander Graham Bell said,
Starting point is 00:31:11 Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun's rays do not burn until brought into a focus. Light that is focused is a laser. Light that is dispersed merely lights the room. You can cut metal with a laser. You can do surgery with a laser. Light that is dispersed merely lights the room. You can cut metal with a laser. You can do surgery with a laser. And a life that is laser focused generally becomes very successful in the area that it is focused on.
Starting point is 00:31:37 Life and light share that. So focus your life on something. The young man that called earlier had a point. There is a lot of people, sadly, running around America that believe that money and wealth are evil and that wealthy people are all evil. These are people that have not been exposed to enough of the world, number one. But number two, they have an improper reading of Scripture, meaning they're wrong. Some of the most godly people on the planet that I've ever met are very, very wealthy. However, they don't view themselves as wealthy. However, they don't view themselves as wealthy. They view themselves as what we Christians call a steward, a manager of God's assets. And we're managing it for his glory, at his direction, and he is the owner. And so, no, I don't believe in getting rich for getting rich sake. I believe in building wealth because it is biblical to do so.
Starting point is 00:32:49 In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil. But a foolish man devours all he has. You spend everything you make, you're a fool. And that's, by the way, how you end up broke. And broke is not spiritual. And by the way, rich is not spiritual. Spiritual is spiritual. Loving God is not proven by being poor, and loving God is not proven by being wealthy.
Starting point is 00:33:23 You simply love God. That's spiritual. And, you know, you can decide to do that at any economic strata. But then if I'm going to follow the basic tenets of Scripture, which is a cause and effect world that we live in, if you plant corn, you will grow corn the bible says as you sow so shall you reap what you plant as you plant so you know and so if you do dumb things you're going to get dumb and desperate results in your life i've done dumb things haven't some of you
Starting point is 00:33:58 it doesn't work out well that's why we quit doing them, because they were dumb. And if I save no money, every time I have any kind of a bump in the road, everything around me is a crisis. How is that godly? Being poor makes you godly? That is nowhere in Scripture. Now, it is in the liberal ideology that the wealthy are evil and should be punished and taxed extra, and thus the whole wealthy inequality movement and the whole socialism movement and all of that stuff. But that's a political ideology.
Starting point is 00:34:40 That's not a Christian ideology. And conservatives aren't a political ideology. That's not a Christian ideology. And conservatives aren't a political ideology. That's not a Christian ideology. So what you've got to do, as my pastor says, you can't let the world teach you theology. You have to read the scriptures and say, this is what they say. And this is how I'm going to live. Wealth is not evil. Are some wealthy people evil?
Starting point is 00:35:06 Yes, absolutely. Did they become wealthy because they were evil? In some cases, they're crooks. In some cases, they're just evil people that got rich. Sometimes that happens. Are there wealthy people that are godly people? Absolutely. Everywhere.
Starting point is 00:35:29 I know hundreds, if not thousands, of very, very wealthy people that love God as much as any of you Pharisees out there that think you love God. Are poor people evil? Some of them. Some of them will cut your throat to see if you'll bleed. And some of the most godly and friendly and hospitable people I've ever met are poor people. So this idea that somehow money is the action here, the cause, it's not the causal agent. The only thing money does is reveal who you are.
Starting point is 00:36:04 It just makes you more of who you already are. If you're arrogant and you get money, you become unbelievably, unbearably arrogant. And so on. Name any positive or negative character trait, and you get money, and it exposes that and expands that and magnifies that. That's what you find out there. And that's why I wrote that book, The Legacy Journey. It's the only book I've ever written on wealth.
Starting point is 00:36:31 All the other books I've written are on money. And there's a difference. And it's the most Christian book I've ever written. If you don't want to read something that's quoting your scripture, and I don't like the Christian Dave Ramsey, well, you don't like the Dave Ramsey because that's who he is. But anyway, I guess that's always humorous to me when I see it on social media. I like Dave Ramsey except for that Christian stuff. It's kind of like you can't, you know, it's like I like Chevrolet cars except for the
Starting point is 00:36:54 Chevrolet part. You know what I mean? It's kind of a dumb statement, you know. But anyway, I've only written one book that was a Christian book and a wealth book, and that is The Legacy Journey. And it outlines the stuff I'm talking about here. So that's what we're dealing with. Our question of the day comes from Blinds.com.

However, is it okay to finance at 0%? For example, purchasing furniture set from rooms to go with a 0% interest rate.
Starting point is 00:37:43 Dietrich, we just finished a study of 10,000-plus millionaires. Not a single one of them out of 10,000 said, I got rich by borrowing money to buy my furniture at 0%. I tricked rooms to go into making me wealthy. I bought a car at 0%. I tricked rooms to go into making me wealthy. I bought a car at 0%. I bought a whatever at 0%. It's everywhere, right? Now, let me ask you, since no millionaires say that, and since we know that banks charge interest on loans, how is it that you think these people are loaning this money at 0%? Have you thought that through? Is it possible that the pricing at rooms to go or rooms there they went or whatever the company that has 0% best buy or whoever, is it possible that the pricing is built into the price of the item,
Starting point is 00:38:48 the interest rate is built into the price of the item that you're purchasing? Do you think? Use your noodle, Bubba. Seriously. And if not that, they have really good data, like most of us in business who study our data. It says out of 1,000 people that take out these 0% loans, the vast majority of them don't pay it off during that time. By the way, it's about 88%.
Starting point is 00:39:12 And so during the 90 days or during the one year, they don't pay it off. And if you don't pay it off, you know what happens? It goes into a regular loan, and they backcharge you through the year or the 90 days or whatever the period of time is for the interest. Well, I'm one of the 12% that does pay it off. Okay, that's fine. But you understand that on average, you're paying for this. And so I don't understand why you want to play with snakes.
Starting point is 00:39:41 If you want to play with snakes, you can play with snakes. I don't play with snakes because snakes bite. And some of them will kill you when they bite you. And the others just hurt. And so why play around with these people? They're going to bite you. And nobody gets rich borrowing
Starting point is 00:39:58 money at 0% interest. Never met a single one. Not a single guy said, you know, I bought all my TVs and my furniture at 0% interest. That's how I got to be single one. Not a single guy said, you know, I bought all my TVs and my furniture is 0% interest. That's how I got to be a millionaire. Not one. They all say I avoid debt like the plague. Because it destroys my most powerful wealth building tool, which is my income.
Starting point is 00:40:16 That puts this hour of the Dave Ramsey Show in the books. We'll be back with you before you know it.
