Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from the headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, it's the Dave Ramsey Show, where debt is dumb, cash is king, and the paid-off home mortgage has taken the place of the BMW as the status symbol of choice. I am Dave Ramsey, your host. We're glad you're here. Open phones at 888-825-5225. That's 888-825-5225. This week is Coordinator Appreciation Week. What's a coordinator? Well, Financial Peace University, our program that is a one-year membership,
Starting point is 00:01:08 includes nine lessons with a local group. When you go to a local church and you will go through the nine lessons to get you started, that is the basis, that's the starting point, the base camp for Financial Peace University. A coordinator causes that to happen, a local coordinator. Volunteers. Many of our coordinators, there's about 30,000 of them active right now, have led multiple classes of Financial Peace University. They've led one, two, five, six, seven, eight, ten, some of them 20.
Starting point is 00:01:40 I've met them that have led more than that. And it's pretty incredible. And so we're honoring coordinators. I signed a proclamation earlier in the week, and this is officially Coordinator Appreciation Week. Isn't it cool when you can just make up crap? Well, it's my show, so shut up. All right, Charlie is a coordinator.
Starting point is 00:02:04 He's in Baltimore, Maryland. Hey, Charlie, thanks for leading the class, man. We appreciate you leading it. Hey, David, good to talk to you. You too, sir. How long have you been coordinating Financial Peace University? I've been coordinating now about six years. I've led ten classes. Wow.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Thank you very much. So what made you decide to lead these classes? I've always had an interest in personal finance and desire to help people, but it wasn't until I heard you on the radio a number of years ago that I started listening to you and learned about FPU. You had a special one year for veterans and military retirees and for Veterans Day, and I took advantage of that special, and I took the class and loved it. So I went to my church leadership and said,
Starting point is 00:02:55 I think this is something we need to bring to our people. And the pastor and the other people on the financial team agreed, and so about six years ago, I led my first class. Wow, very cool. It is truly a front-row seat to watching people change their lives, isn't it? Oh, certainly. It's a blessing to see the light come on in somebody's eyes and to see the hope restored.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Yeah. So what are some of the best stories you've seen in the six years? Probably the biggest story I had was first night of class, probably my third or fourth class. I had a young lady, a young mom break down and cry during the first night when we were talking about savings and getting out of debt. And she and her husband were so in debt and had so many bills that they couldn't even afford to make the monthly payments on everything. The bills were higher than their income, and they were just desperate. And so I got a chance to work with them for several weeks after class, going one-over-one with their budget,
Starting point is 00:04:02 looking at different options of things they could do. And we had a great class. We rallied behind them and gave them encouragement. And by the end of the nine weeks, not only did they have a plan, but they actually had their Baby Step 1 completed before the ninth class was over. And they couldn't breathe when they got in there. Wow. So you not only got them right side up, you got them tracking.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Wow. I did. I did. It changed their life, and it changed mine. And it just made me want to do even more of this. Very cool. Well, Charlie, thank you for your service to the country, and thank you for your service being a volunteer coordinator.
Starting point is 00:04:41 We really, really appreciate it. It was an honor to talk to you today, sir. And to you too, Dave. Have a great day. You too, really appreciate it. It's an honor to talk to you today, sir. Andy, you too, Dave. Have a great day. You too, sir. Thank you for calling in. Wow, awesome stuff. This week we are running a special promotion

Starting point is 00:05:27 Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Hey, Dave. Thanks for having me. Sure. What's up? Hey, so just real quick, I want to briefly give our testimony. My wife and I got married about eight years ago and were really plugged into FPU and managed to pay our debts off quickly.
Starting point is 00:05:41 And my wife, when we had our first kid, stayed home. And when she went home, we took the legacy journey, which we really loved and motivated us to pay our house off. Wow. About a year ago, we paid our house off at the age of 30 and 27, which was awesome. And actually I coordinated a couple of classes, which has been great. And then about four months ago, we had our third kid,
Starting point is 00:06:03 and our life really changed. We decided it was time to buy another house and upgrade, and we got a small mortgage to do that. We had both our house and our new house under contract. And in one week's time, our buyers backed out of the house we were selling. We decided to close our new house. And then an hour after we closed, my employer decided that they were going to shut our office down, which was just a huge shock. So this summer, we've really been trying to recover from that. I managed to get a new job with a new employer, and it was really a great opportunity.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Still haven't sold our home, so we're working through that piece. So my question is, you know, we talk about gazelle intensity in times when you're trying to pay off debt, but, you, but we emotionally are just exhausted. It's been an ordeal. We're really trying to figure out, okay, now we feel like we're almost to the end of this. We've almost got this house sold. We know God's working, but what should our mindset be? We talk about gazelle intensity.
Starting point is 00:07:02 What should our mindset be in this situation, and how do we recover once we're finally past it? Well, gazelle intensity has to do with baby steps one through three, meaning you're paying off everything but your house and building your emergency fund. I mean more from an analogy standpoint. We use that analogy there. What's the analogy here? Yeah, and the analogy here is you're hanging on until you turn the corner in this, you know, it's more like centrifugal force and you're getting ready to be thrown out of the roller coaster, you know. So you're hanging on for dear life as you go around the corner, almost like something out of a cartoon or something.
Starting point is 00:07:38 But it's certainly not a cartoon. It's your life. The good news is that you recognize that the thought process that led you into this was broken. Because these processes where we go into debt, when you're not in debt, and I'm going to turn and go into debt, only work when they work. And when things don't work, that's when your stupid gets stress tested you know and that's where you guys are sitting right now you got stress tested and it failed and so um the great news is though you're turning the corner and you can learn from it and never ever go back so um you know really all we're waiting on you got the job you got another job you're back in
Starting point is 00:08:21 that seat everything's going along so you got a mortgage is all. That's not exactly a crisis, but it's something to work through from the sale of your other house. But it doesn't mean you have to give away the other house in order to survive or even to prosper. You're going to sell it, and you're going to apply it to the mortgage, and then you're going to get that mortgage paid off, right? Right. And we have a plan to pay it off, you know, in a couple years. Yeah, I think you're going to be right back in the driver's seat again. The question is, this time, don't leave the driver's seat.
Starting point is 00:09:02 With more frequency than you know, I get calls and emails from people dealing with the recent loss of a spouse or a parent. You can hear the struggle and the heartache that they've been experiencing. And at a time they should be grieving, what breaks my heart the most is the strain and tension that they're going through because of money, especially when it's a situation that could have been avoided. If you have a family, it is your responsibility to have term life insurance. It's one of the things you do to say, I love you. And yes, this is an ad for Zander Insurance. But since this is one of the most effective ways I say I love you. And yes, this is an ad for Zander Insurance. But since this is one of the most effective ways I have to get my point across, so be it. For over 20 years, I've been telling you about the importance of term life insurance and protecting your family. Listen, you need to check out Zander.com or call 800-356-4282.
Starting point is 00:09:43 I can't say it enough. Protect your family. It's what you're supposed to do. Go to Zander.com or call 800-356-4282. Coming up at the bottom of the hour, Ramsey personality, Christy Wright, the founder and author of Business Boutique, equipping women to make money doing what they love. Big announcement here at the bottom of the hour. We'll also be taking calls from you ladies around the nation that want to talk to Christy about starting and operating your own business.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Nathan and Amy are in the lobby of Ramsey Solutions, meanwhile, and you're here because you're debt-free. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you, Dave. Where do you guys live? We are from Northfield, Minnesota. Fun. Well, welcome to Nashville. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you, Dave. Where do you guys live? We are from Northfield, Minnesota. Fun. Well, welcome to Nashville. Good to have you. How much have you
Starting point is 00:10:50 guys paid off? We paid off $145,000 in seven years and seven months, and $87,000 of which was in the last two years. Okay, very cool. All right, story here. And your range of income during the whole time, I guess, seven years. During the seven years, we ranged the income from $30,000 up to about $190,000. Oh, okay. So there's a story here. What kind of debt was this? This was our house, Dave. You paid off your home?
Starting point is 00:11:18 100% of the house, yep. All right, so you're officially weird people now. I'm looking at weird people. Took 7.7 years to pay off your house, which is about normal. What isn't normal is this range of income and that you did $87,000 of it in two years. So what do you do for a living now and where did this income jump come from? I am a self-employed general contractor doing mostly residential remodeling. And I'm a self-employed landscape designer, but I own my own company and run it, Landscape Company.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Okay. And obviously none of that was going on when you guys were making $30,000. What happened is in 2010 when we started paying the house off, we actually took an opportunity to go and build a church in Alaska, which didn't pay very much. But it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. So I only made $30,000 that year, and then we started ramping up from there. The high end has only been like the last two years. So we've been in the middle most of the time, like in the $80,000 range.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Okay. So it just kicked in. Yep. Your business has matured and hit critical mass. Yep. Both of them, and took off. Yeah. I started my business in 2014 on my own, leaving a company.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Ah, okay. Very good. So the whole debt, though, was your home? Yes. Okay, very cool. So what's your house worth? About $380 or so. All right.
Starting point is 00:12:35 So what put you on this journey 7.7 years ago? Well, we had first originally taken financial peace, I think it was in 05. So we'd gotten rid of the consumer debt. We had a lot of other things that were more priorities. I went self-employed in 07, so that kind of took precedence over the House. And then why don't you take over from there, Amy? In 06, we started becoming coordinators. So we started teaching the class and helping others to see,
Starting point is 00:13:01 which we've done just about every year since, and we're able to lead a class even in Alaska. Wow, thank you. It's been awesome to encourage people that this is a journey that can be done. Yeah, thank you. Very cool. Very cool. So that kept you kind of – plus, teaching it keeps you on track, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:13:16 Exactly. You can't exactly go in there and be a hypocrite. You've got to be doing your budget. You've got to be working your plan. You've got to be, we're getting there, we're getting there, we're getting there. Well, well done. How does it feel to not even have a house payment? Pretty awesome, because that meant I get to get a cleaning lady every two weeks, which
Starting point is 00:13:31 is wonderful. I love it. Very good. How old are you two? I'm 39. And I'm 38. Wow. And you paid for a house before you were 40 years old.
Starting point is 00:13:41 During the process, we also adopted a little girl from China about five years ago, and we were able to do that debt-free also. Neat. We've lived life along the way. Cash flowed that as a part of it. Yes. Very cool. How long have you two been married?
Starting point is 00:13:53 20 years in September. So when you got married 20 years ago, did you ever have any idea by the time you were 40 you were going to have a paid-for house? Never crossed my mind, no. It crossed my mind once or twice that was even before i started doing your stuff that was kind of my idea i wanted it paid by then i just didn't know how i was going to get there were you raised by parents that said you should do that or something no not really they i was they they slightly introduced me to your stuff but i you
Starting point is 00:14:21 know being 17 18 19 i didn't really it didn't sink in real deep. Okay. But, I mean, were they savers and conservative? No, not necessarily. Okay. My parents are pretty frugal. My dad went through years of unemployment. So I watched them just try to live frugally. So the two of you, that motivated you in both cases to come in and go, we're getting this done.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Yep. Love it. Well, congratulations. You've changed your family tree. Yes. That's so fun. I want to say a shout-out to our kids who couldn't be here today because we're going to visit again in two weeks. But that's Caleb, Josh, Timothy, and Esther. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Thanks for joining the journey with us. We took them to go pay off the house down at the bank together. So they've seen us in the whole process. And they love Dave Ramsey, and they rate the screams. They rate the screams. Oh, yeah, they do. Uh-oh. So you're on the rating system here.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Oh, my gosh. So what do you tell people since you're coordinating classes and you paid off your house before you're 40, the key to getting out of debt is? For me, the key is you've got to be on the same page. With all the different things we've gone through over the last seven, eight years, it's prioritizing that and making sure that we're both on the same page. With all the different things we've gone through over the last seven, eight years, it's prioritizing that and making sure that we're both on the same page. To tell you the truth, Dave, we've had some good
Starting point is 00:15:30 fights over the years. When we start doing different business stuff, are we putting the money with one of the businesses? Are we taking it home to put on the house? It's being on the same page for me. What was the biggest fight? Probably... You both just remembered it just then. I'd say for me it's not going into business debt also.
Starting point is 00:15:48 You know, buying trucks for a landscape company, trying to do that debt-free. Who wanted to do that? He wanted to be debt-free, and I was like, well, I've got to build my business here. You're wanting to build a business. I got you. But both of our businesses are also debt-free too, which is a great example to our employees. Yeah, yeah. So you held off. Yeah. That'll cause a big fight example to our employees. Yeah, yeah. So you held off.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Yeah. That'll cause a big fight. That's good. Yeah, that's good. I like that. That's fun. Did you have cheerleaders along the way or people telling you you're crazy? I'd say a little bit of both, but I think, you know, since we were coordinators, we had a lot of people then joining with us.
Starting point is 00:16:21 So they were just excited to see the journey that we were on and how it was attainable. So, yeah, that's real. Yeah. Way to go. You guys, I'm very proud of you. Thank you for leading the class. Thank you for who you are and how you've lived your lives.
Starting point is 00:16:35 It's very impressive. And not even 40. Oh my goodness. Way to go. Well done. We got a copy of Chris Hogan's retire inspired book for you. That's the next chapter in your story to be millionaires. You'll be one of those everyday millionaires calling in Retire Inspired book for you. That's the next chapter in your story. To be millionaires, you'll be one of those everyday millionaires calling in on one of those hours.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Yep, that's the next goal. Yeah, you'll be right there before you know it. You're right on your way. Congratulations, you two. Very well done. Nathan and Amy from Minneapolis. $147,000 paid off in seven years and seven months, but they did $87,000 of it in the last two years, making $30,000 at the low point, but up to $ did 87,000 of it in the last two years, making 30 at the low point, but up to 190 now.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Way to go. Count it down! Let's hear a debt-free scream! Three, two, one. We're debt-free! I love it! Well done, you guys. Very well done.
Starting point is 00:17:28 It's about as good as it gets. Man, that's awesomeness. Very cool. As I said at the bottom of the hour, Ramsey Personality and the founder of Business Boutique, equipping women to make money doing what they love, Christy Wright, will be joining me. If you have a question for her, you're a lady running a business or thinking about running a business, or you know a lady who's thinking about running a business and you've got a question on her behalf, any of those things are fine.
Starting point is 00:17:54 You jump in. The phone number here is 888-825-5225. That's 888-825-5225. JD is on Twitter. At what age should you be getting long-term care insurance? 60. Every minute after 60, the probability of you actually spending some time in a nursing home goes up. 60.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Prior to 60, the chances of you spending time in a nursing home are almost zero. So I do not recommend you buy it at 55. It's five years of wasted premiums. Really. I mean, there's almost no one who goes in between 55 and 60. So it's cheaper then. There's a reason it's cheaper. It's because nobody goes in.
Starting point is 00:18:40 So you need long-term care insurance. Everyone needs long-term care insurance unless you've got a multimillion-dollar net worth to take care of your nursing home stay. Seventy-five percent of you ladies will outlive your husbands. So normally, here's a normal scenario. Papa goes into the nursing home, cracks and scrambles a $300,000 nest egg, dies. Mama's not got any money. Not a plan. You need to take care of those last few years. It's called long-term care insurance. And once you're 60, around here, it's mandatory. Check DaveRamsey.com for one of our endorsed local providers. They'll help you get that
Starting point is 00:19:24 set up like you should. Christy Wright up next here on the Dave Ramamsey.com for one of our endorsed local providers. They'll help you get that set up like you should. Christy Wright up next here on the Dave Ramsey Show. Hey, this is Dave Ramsey. You know, most of us have gotten behind on our bills at one time or another. That's nothing to be ashamed of. It happens. And many of us know the embarrassment that comes with those harassing calls from collectors. Some of these guys are just scum. But then there are the collectors that are just plain crooks.
Starting point is 00:20:03 These are the guys that take it a step further and they violate the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act on a daily basis. They're breaking the law and they need to be stopped. The truth is debt collection is the most abusive, out-of-control industry in America today. But you don't have to put up with it. If you have collectors calling you multiple times a day, calling you at work after you've asked them not to, cursing or threatening you in any way, then you need to visit CollectionBully.com. These folks will connect you with an attorney who I know can help you. These attorneys know how to stop collection agencies from bullying and threatening you anymore. CollectionBully.com. Go to CollectionBully.com today.
Starting point is 00:20:44 That's CollectionBully.com Go to collectionbully.com today. That's collectionbully.com Joining me this hour, number one best-selling author, Ramsey personality Chrissy Wright, and the founder of the business boutique movement, equipping women to make money doing what they love. A lot of stuff going on out there. If you are a lady, or you know a lady, in business, or is thinking about getting into business, and you have a question for Christy,
Starting point is 00:21:19 she's here this half hour to answer your questions. The phone number is 888-825-5225. Christy, congratulations. I understand you just had another successful speaking gig down in Texas a couple days ago. Yeah, it was a lot of fun, and it's amazing. The energy, we've talked about this before, but the energy in the room or in an arena
Starting point is 00:21:40 when it's thousands of women is just a lot of fun. They laugh more. They're so engaged. You have a blast. As a speaker, you could stay on stage forever. It's very similar to what we experience at our business boutique event in Nashville. It's just, it's really special when you get a lot of women that have dreams and businesses in that room, and we have a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:21:57 So, yeah, it was a great, it was actually my birthday Friday when I was there, so I got to spend my 35th birthday with them, and it was a great way to do it. I love it. You know, I'm looking down this list of all the different ways people can get help now, ladies can get help with this. And I think back to, it seems like 20 minutes ago, but it was now several years back, you and I and some of our team were, you know, we were in a brainstorming session laying out a game plan, thinking about Christy Wright, the speaker, Christy Wright, the professional, Christy Wright, this. And we started having this moment where your background, the way you grew up, kind of collided with a call I take here on the air all the time,
Starting point is 00:22:39 which is a lady who has oftentimes more education than her husband, more drive than her husband. Maybe she's even smarter than her husband. Either way, whether we measure against her husband or not is irrelevant. But she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. She wanted to stay home with her kids. And so all of those other things from a standpoint of creating money are put on the shelf. And then she calls me and she goes, but we're trying to get out of debt,
Starting point is 00:23:02 so do I go back to work? But I'm thinking about starting a side hustle. And I've had that call over 30 years of doing this so many times. And combine that with your upbringing. And we kind of stirred up the soup, stirred up the gumbo. And it turns into business boutique. So tell them a little bit about that story because I think that was a moment. It was.
Starting point is 00:23:23 And what's interesting is what we've learned since then is pretty incredible, too, Because I think that start a business. So many people are getting into business, whether it's an Etsy shop or home-based business or freelance business or side business, and they get into it for a variety of reasons because it's easier. They want to pay off their debt quicker, but then they get stuck and they don't know the basics of, well, how do I sell without being pushy? Or how do I set myself apart from the competition? How do I make money at this thing? Will anyone even buy it? And so we started to see, wow, there's really a need to help people with the information of running a business, but also the inspiration to push past your fear and do it scared. And how it's evolved since then has been really, really fun. And I'll tell you what, Dave, what I love watching are women that come into Business
Starting point is 00:24:21 Boutique, maybe as a stay-at-home mom that says, you know, I just want to start this little thing on the side. They always say little. This little thing on the side. And then two years in, she's running a seven-figure business. And she's a business owner. And she's doing this thing. And she has a team. And it evolves.
Starting point is 00:24:36 And her goals grow as her confidence grows. And so all stages of business, we've seen this happen. But it's really cool to see what a unique fit there is in the market for my background and my story but also what what women need when they're when they're trying to do this thing and chase their dreams yeah your mom when she's owning that cake shop that bakery and little four-year-old christy's taking her afternoon nap on a bag of flour that's right um y'all had no idea no no and now, seeing the stories of women at, like, for example, our business boutique event. They come up to me and they say, you know, your story about your mom, your story about how she took you to the cake shop at three in the morning.
Starting point is 00:25:12 And the memories you have there, good memories, crazy memories that that growing up in the business didn't harm you. It actually helps you. Man, that really helped me. And women that are set free realizing I'm not harming my kids by working hard. It actually doesn't make you a bad mom. It makes you a better mom when you step into your God-given gifts to do something that you love to do. That example it sets for them. So it's been cool to see how God's used my story in a way I couldn't have expected.
Starting point is 00:25:37 And the first thing we ever did was we put together an all-star lineup to teach ladies in business in an event. Because we do events. We're really good at putting on events around Ramsey. And we're good at publishing books. We're good at several things. But the first thing we thought, let's get this material out in the marketplace, and let's see how the audience reacts, and let's see if we can really help. Let's see if we can really serve.
Starting point is 00:25:59 And we did that here in Nashville. Nashville's a great destination city nowadays. Everybody wants to come to Nashville. I learned the other day the number one bachelorette party city It is. It's Sir Pass Vegas. I'm not sure this is the list you want to be on, but we're on that list. But it's a destination site these days. It's a lot
Starting point is 00:26:16 of fun to come to Nashville. A lot of people, the food scene and the music scene and everything is just absolutely incredible. And turns out several years later, we've never even moved it. We keep doing it here because the ladies want to keep coming back here. And it's become an annual event, the Business Boutique three-day event. It's a massive event, like 3,000, 4,000 ladies there, almost all ladies anyway,
Starting point is 00:26:39 and an all-star lineup of speakers and teachers, some of the best minds in business and communicators to share with them. And we've done that. This is, what, the fourth year? The fourth year for our Nashville event. We've had events, our one-day event, you know, in the spring all over the country. But this is our fourth year for our Nashville. The mothership. That's right.
Starting point is 00:26:57 The mothership event here in Nashville is the fourth one. And, by the way, this year it's going to be in November. There are some tickets left. This thing always sells out very, very early. So I know you're sitting here in late July and you're thinking, what's November? But it's about 20 seconds away, and it's about 19 seconds away from being sold out. So November the 1st through the 3rd, Christy will, of course, be speaking. I'm going to be speaking.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Our friend Annie Downs will be our uh our mc dave barnes our friend will be here doing music uh and uh talk about some of these other ladies that are communicators that are going to be there and what they're covering yeah so all of our speakers were very selective about who we choose because we want to hit the pain points that these women have that they tell us they need help with so we cover everything from social media We've got a brand new social media expert, Amy Jo Martin. She's an influencer in this space. She's got a brilliant mind about how to up your social media game. We've got Sarah Jakes-Robert, who is one of the best communicators I've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:27:56 I saw her actually last fall at the Propel event, and she just brought the house down. This is T.J.'s daughter and Christine Kane. And then Megan Tamptey, she's the CEO of EverEve, and it's this awesome business. It's a clothing line for moms. She's got 80 stores across the country, and just a really cool business story of how she grew it from the ground up. Emily Lay, a lot of people in our space know her. She's got planners and organization tools, and she's just also started her business,
Starting point is 00:28:24 has a really cool story. And so we've got a wide variety of people that we're covering the main pain points of business, everything from pushing past your fear to the plan that you need, social media, marketing, selling. And then, of course, we always have breakouts, Dave, and this is where people customize their experience. So they have breakouts on individual topics where they can choose which breakouts they go to that will help them with their particular business or their particular goals. And so it's always a lot of fun. And people leave with the information that they need to win, and they change their business as a result of it. It's really fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:28:57 This is, we do a lot of events, and I've been involved in a lot of world-class events over the years. This is one that every single time we do it, I watch physical transformation. That's right. The way the woman walks in and the way she walks out is different. Right. The way they carry themselves is different. The inspiration has an instantaneous transformation like nothing I've seen. I mean, it's pretty impressive. It really is.
Starting point is 00:29:24 And as you said, it's uniquely female and all of that, and that's very cool. It's very cool that we get to be involved in that. I'm honored I get to speak this year. It's a lot of fun. I own it, so I guess I can speak whenever I want. You can come whenever you want. But, you know, I don't do that unless the team and Christy think that it's appropriate and the right time and so forth.
Starting point is 00:29:40 So pretty cool stuff. Again, November 1st through the 3rd, make Nashville, well, make it a Nashville stop this fall. And guys, if you've got a lady in your life, one way you can say I believe in you is you can buy her ticket to this and take care of her travel. Send your lady. Very cool stuff. You can do that at businessboutique.com or davramsey.com for your tickets. We'll be back with questions from Wisconsin and North Carolina for Christy.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Christy Wright, Ramsey Personality, the founder of the business boutique movement, equipping women to make money doing what they love. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. Okay, I need you to listen to this. Because one normal routine that everyone does can cause total chaos in your life. I'm talking about the simple act of using Wi-Fi. When you're on Wi-Fi anywhere in public or at home, you're at risk of hackers easily seeing every site you visit and every search you're doing online. It doesn't matter if you're on your cell or your laptop.
Starting point is 00:30:59 They can see you visiting websites, streaming or downloading, uploading photos, files and more. I'm not telling you this to scare you, but I want you to be aware and take action. You need to download an app called Hotspot Shield. Hotspot Shield helps keep your connection on your own Wi-Fi and any public Wi-Fi secure. 600 million people worldwide have downloaded Anchor Free's Hotspot Shield. Download it right now. Just search Hotspot Shield on iTunes or Google Play or go to hotspotshield.com. You can be secure in seconds. Download Hotspot Shield by Anchor Free today. Our scripture of the day, Matthew 16, 24. Then Jesus said to his disciples,
Starting point is 00:31:50 If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Vince Lombardi said, Football is like life. It requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication, and respect for authority. Christy, that's the way it works in business, too. Perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice. The hardest boss you'll ever have in your life is working for yourself. That guy's a slave driver.
Starting point is 00:32:17 That woman's a slave driver. You know, so much of it is just hanging on. I love the quote by William Feather where he says, Success is largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go. You know, people want a formula. It's just hang in there. Just stick with it. It's what you say all the time.
Starting point is 00:32:29 Never give up. Never give in. Never, never quit. Maureen is with us in Wisconsin. Hi, Maureen. Your question for Christy Wright. Hi. How are you?
Starting point is 00:32:38 Great. How can we help? Okay. So I was in real estate during the really bad times. I was a foreclosure expert. And now I'm looking to get back into it. And the market is completely different. And I am at a loss as how I, as a woman, am going to stand out in this industry amongst a bunch of men.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Okay, so you're a foreclosure. You mean as a real estate agent? Oh, yes. I did short sales like you wouldn't believe. I had 100% success rate. I had the numbers to executives at Bank of America, Chase, all of that. If you're in residential real estate, you're not among a bunch of men. You're among a bunch of women.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Yes and no. Up here, it seems like a lot of men around me okay honestly okay cool honestly in my area actually what's going on in my area right now is a huge um a ginormous technology industry is going to buy up a ton of property okay i'm bringing a lot of new employees and this is again a male-dominated industry, and I'm looking at this opportunity, okay, because this is a huge change going on here, and I'm saying, how am I going to insert myself in this as a woman, and I understand what your needs are. Gotcha. Okay, Christy?
Starting point is 00:34:04 Yeah, you know, I think, Maureen, I think just from the snippet that you gave us, it seems to me that you're downplaying the years of experience you already have in real estate. So what strengths, what skills, what knowledge, what expertise do you have that you can leverage in this new season with the new dynamics? But what I'm hearing, unless I'm misunderstanding something, I don't think this is a male or female issue. I think you're just good and you need to show people how you're good and you can solve their problems and meet their needs as their agent.
Starting point is 00:34:33 And maybe you want to change your unique position where it's not so much about foreclosure, if that's not what you want to focus on this time. And so you're going to leverage a different angle in your marketing as why someone should choose you. But I don't hear a huge barrier in terms of the problem. What am I missing here as far as being a woman in this space? I think that you're just really good and you need to show them how you're really good. And, you know, that's generally true in most spaces.
Starting point is 00:34:55 I mean, there's some places you run into straight up sexism. But, you know, if you are a lady who's excellent in an area, in a space where the primary population in that space is male, you automatically stand out. Right, right. You don't need to show people. It's your advantage. And by the way, did y'all know I'm a woman? Can you believe it? Like, people know, I think, when you walk in a room, right?
Starting point is 00:35:19 I don't know. I mean, I feel like that a lot of times we dismiss our past experience because, oh, the landscape is different now. You probably learned a lot then that you can apply to what you're doing now, even if the landscape is a little bit different or your angle is a little bit different. But to me, I don't see it as a gender issue as much as you're a skilled agent in that space. And as long as you can communicate to people how you solve their problems and meet their needs, I don't think they'll care whether or not it's a man or woman helping them. Yeah, of all the top, you know, some of the top real estate agents in America are our endorsed local providers. We don't bring on people that don't sell 50 to 500 houses a year, somewhere in that range. And so if you sell two houses a year, you're not one of our endorsed local providers.
Starting point is 00:36:01 I've got to tell you, well over 50 percent, I don't know the exact number, but I would guess 75 percent are ladies. And so, you know, it may be in that particular locale that you're facing that in residential real estate. Now, in commercial real estate, you will find more men on average. But again, the way you stand out is you're just good. Right, if you know your stuff. I'm an old guy, and if i'm coming up to lease a building i don't care if it's a lady standing there the leasing agent right as a commercial deal or if it's a guy standing there i care if they know what the flip they're doing right
Starting point is 00:36:33 and so the way you stand out is you know your stuff right and you put your stuff the the knowledge on parade and that's your brand differentiator then um now again 30 years ago yeah you could have 40 years ago my mom got in the real estate business in 1966 and we got hate mail left in our mailbox because not only was she a woman in an entirely male industry at that time but she dared to wear pantsuits yeah instead of a dress you know i mean so yeah sexism was real and it is still real sir there's a thing but it's what condi ricei Rice was saying in the last Entree event that we did. She said, when you give someone else, when you declare yourself a victim, you give someone else your power. That's right.
Starting point is 00:37:12 And so we're not going to do that. We're just going to say be incredible. You may have to be better than a guy to get some guy's attention or some people's attention. There may be women that are sexist against women on something. That can happen. It's the same as a racism issue. Sometimes you you have to be better but i'm from the south sometimes i have to be better to get you yankees to think i'm not stupid some of you yankees think i've you know that this 800 person 200 million dollar a year business is operating in a double wide so i still have to be twice as good you know and sometimes i think i think it's
Starting point is 00:37:43 in our head more than we think it is. Exactly. We got a call on the radio show, I think it was like a year ago, and it was a woman that wanted to start a homeschooling program. She had 13 years experience in early childhood education
Starting point is 00:37:53 and didn't believe parents would trust her because she didn't have kids of her own. I was like, that's in your head. Can you teach their kids? You've been teaching
Starting point is 00:38:00 longer than they have. Exactly. Can you solve the problems? I think, Maureen, that's your answer. Can you solve their problems? And if you can, and show them how you can, they're not going to care about whether you're a woman or a man.
Starting point is 00:38:10 They just want their problem solved. Joe's in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hi, Joe. Your question for Christy Wright. Hi. I am calling about my wife, actually. She is wanting to start her own business and has a couple ideas and can't really seem to narrow it down past that. And I was just wondering how I can support her and kind of give her advice for what she wants to do and help her figure it out.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Joe, I love the fact that you're asking this because just by the fact that you called in and you're asking this question shows that you're supportive. It shows that you're interested and you care. So I just I want to commend you for even taking an interest in your wife's dreams and passions. I'm sure that comes through and she gets that. I will tell you that asking her what she needs a lot of times is a good starting point.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Sometimes in marriage, we try to just guess and hypothesize and theorize about what our spouse needs. And it might be as simple as asking him like, hey, do you need help around the house or help with the kids? If you have kids so that you can work on this dream or invest time in it. Do you need some type of community? Do you need time with friends or a book club?
Starting point is 00:39:12 What do you need? Sometimes asking can be a good starting point. But I'll tell you, Joe, I actually have a brand new course called the Business Idea Boot Camp that I'm going to have Kelly send you. So you take it all online. It's four modules and it helps you narrow down your ideas. You give this to your wife and it will help her narrow her ideas down because sometimes entrepreneurs, we do have a lot of ideas. I get it. I have 500 new ideas a day, Joe, but this is going to help her narrow down all her ideas to find her best business idea. And if you have no
Starting point is 00:39:41 ideas for someone that struggles with that, if that was her case, this helps you brainstorm ideas to find your best idea. So I'll have Kelly send that to you, and you can give that to her as a gift. And I think that gift combined with your encouragement and just asking the right questions, I'm sure she'll feel supported. Let's add one thing to that, Joe. If after she goes through that she wants to come to Nashville to the business boutique, we'll give her a ticket to that too. Awesome. Oh, wow. Okay, so. That would be awesome.
Starting point is 00:40:06 Thank you. Kelly will be your connection on that. You can follow up with her. And, you know, obviously we don't need to give you a ticket if she doesn't want to come to Nashville. But if she wants to come over here, the ticket is on us, the entrance fee. And then Christy will send you the boot camp as well at no cost. And that will get you guys started.
Starting point is 00:40:22 And thank you. Thank you for standing with your lady, man. That's a big deal. And guy advice is sometimes you don't need to fix anything. Sometimes you just need to shut up and listen. And that's hard for us guys. We like fixing things. And our wife tells us about a problem, and we think we're supposed to fix the problem,
Starting point is 00:40:40 and all we're supposed to do is listen. And that's coming from a guy who's been married 37 years and still does it wrong about once a week so there you go but uh i appreciate who you are man i appreciate you standing there with your lady that's pretty cool i love kelly pick up and kelly pick up and get you going christy i'm proud of you you're doing good work thanks so much thanks for having me on the show absolutely business boutique academy christy writes online coaching the new course the Idea Boot Camp, all at businessboutique.com.
