This is 5-Minute Friday, episode number 156, and you can be legendary.
Have you ever wondered what makes someone a legend?
The word legend derived from the Latin to read.
A legend is someone whose story is written and read again and again for years beyond their time. Let's start from the
beginning. A legend is born. Let's say that legend is you. You were born. You go to school. You play
with your friends. Maybe your parents get divorced. You read books on history and mythology and you
write essays and then you graduate from high school you believe you have a unique gift and you also believe you will find it oh the places
you'll go all the while you keep searching yearning pining for your place
in the world a seat at the table of greatness where is your seat what will
you bring to the table?
Maybe you become a doctor or a waitress, a teacher or a single parent.
You start your days with a fire and fall into bed with it burned out.
You know there has to be more.
You had a dream of making a difference.
You were told you could make a difference.
But years go by and life happens and you start to lose hope.
You start going through the motions. You forget the fire that used to burn inside you, the passion for change and impact.
I personally know a man who is a legend.
My grandfather, Kimball Howes.
To me, he was larger than life. A former college
football all-star, an injured veteran of World War II, a PhD superintendent of schools, and a
father of four incredible children, one of them being my father. My grandfather didn't become a
legend by his list of accomplishments, though. He became a legend because of the way he
made you feel. How he made each of us feel and all who came to know him. Because when he gave
his attention to you and his conversation, he was all in 100%, passionate, loud, unapologetically
himself, and consistent. Every single time I came through his door, he would unapologetically himself, and consistent.
Every single time I came through his door, he would have his arms open wide,
shouting my name in the way only my grandfather could.
Lewis!
That is what makes a legend.
A legend's fire never goes out.
No matter how many mistakes you have made, and to hear the stories, it appears my grandfather
has made some serious mistakes that costed him dearly, but he never lost his fire.
And you know another one of my grandfather's secrets?
He made you feel like you were the most important person in the whole world when you were with him.
He focused on you and not on himself.
And that is unforgettable.
Maya Angelou said,
I've learned that people will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did.
But people will never forget how you made them feel.
This is a story about a legend who you have never heard of, but is everything to me.
We all have legends in our own lives, in our own families.
Honor them for the gifts that they bring.
You are one of a kind.
You have a vision.
You never give up on the world.
You love fiercely.
You know yourself and stretch the limits of the ordinary.
You know that life is bigger than you and me.
You live a life worth telling about.
Your love will live on in our hearts and our minds.
The image of your face will never fade.
The sound of your voice never weaken you will live on you
will find your seat at the table of greatness you will not give up and be beaten down by life's
trials you will be a legend in the end it is the simple smile the message message, the good deed, your gifts to the world and the ones you love
and impact that matter. Be bold. Be unforgettable. Be you. Be a legend.
