This is 5-Minute Friday!
Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing.
Now, this man had a habit of walking on the beach every single morning before he began his work.
In early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had
passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching
in both directions. Now, off into the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching.
As the boy walked, he paused every so often, and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.
Now the boy came closer still, and the man called out,
Good morning, young man. May I ask what it is that you're doing?
Now the young boy paused, looked up, and replied,
I'm throwing starfish into the ocean. You see, the tide has
washed them up onto the beach and they can't return into the sea by themselves. And when the
sun gets high, they will die unless I throw them back into the water. Now the old man replied,
but there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I'm afraid you won't really be able to make that much of a difference.
Now the boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish,
and threw it as far as he could into the ocean.
Then he turned to the old man, smiled, and said,
but I made a difference to that one.
I love this story. This is a rendition from The Star Thrower by Lauren Eastley. And I love this message. It's so simple and so effective, yet sometimes we
forget how powerful of a difference we can make on one person at a time. And we may not be able to take on all of the
world's pain. You know, there's so much happening in the world right now with the shootings all over
the place, with the terrorism, with people getting killed for seeming no reason, for all the cancers
out there, all the deaths that are occurring. We may not be able to save everyone in this world. And we may feel like we're so busy trying to achieve things and focus on ourselves and
get out of our debt and find the relationship of our dreams and achieve what we want.
We're so busy and focused on ourselves and our selfish things that we want to create
in the world that we forget sometimes that we have an opportunity to make an incredible
difference on this planet.
And even if it's just for one person a day, maybe we're not going to literally save their
life, but you never know what a random act of kindness, what one small token of appreciation,
what one gift you can give to someone could change their state in that moment, could change a
negative way they've been thinking and start feeling more worthy, more desiring, more loving
towards themselves, which could ripple effect into the world, into every person they connect
with after that interaction with you.
You never know what type of impact you will make.
And you can make such a huge difference to one person, and then another
person, and then another. Again, you don't have to save the entire world of every pain that is
happening. But it's our duty, and we have such a huge opportunity to make a difference to someone
today. I want you to think about how you can make a difference today. What
is it you're going to do? Who are you going to be that's going to lift someone up, that's going to
inspire someone, that might actually save someone's life by what you say, what you do, and how you be?
Think about it. Who do you want to become? Who can you support? Whose life can you make a difference with today?
This is episode number 354, 5-Minute Friday, all about how to make a difference.
